Bring autumn hues to gardens with these deciduous delights

Japanese maples

These compact trees, typically up to 5m, have an attractive broad, rounded canopy on a single or multi-stemmed trunk. The leaves may be the classic maple shape or fine and lacy, in green or deep burgundy red, becoming yellow, crimson red or burnished orange in autumn before falling.

Crepe myrtle

For interest all year, try this smallto-medium tree. It has masses of vibrant flowers in summer, fiery red and copper foliage in autumn, bare stems with textured bark in winter, and lush emerald-green leaves in spring. Grows in most climates, in full sun with well-drained soil.

Forest Pansy

The large, heart-shaped purpleblack leaves make this tree a favourite with landscape designers, offering lovely colour contrast. Their drama is heightened once the temperature cools, triggering the foliage to transform into shades of brilliant yellow and orange.

Ornamental pears

While they don’t bear edible fruit, these trees do display blazing autumnal tones and a profusion of spring flowers. ‘Capital’ grows into a tight column; ‘Chanticleer’ is tall with a pyramidal habit; ‘Edgedell’ develops a rounded canopy to 8m. Ensure full sun and well-drained soil improved with organic matter.
