A word from our editor There’s something about the beginning of the year that makes us want our homes to be more organised, and whatever the interior planning problem, the answer is nearly always storage! It’s amazing how much you can squeeze into even the smallest space if you think outside the box a little.

Hop onto YouTube and have a look at Bunnings’ brilliant Make It Yours series, where, among the eye-popping makeovers and budget-friendly upcycling ideas, you’ll find organisation expert Steph Pase’s clever ways to store all sorts of things. Steph, of @justanothermummyblog, tackled the wardrobe, pantry, linen cupboard and laundry – all space-challenged zones – with a host of amazing ideas. Check them out from page 37. Of course, if you’d rather relax, our Palm Springs-influenced story will hopefully inspire a super-chilled update of your outdoor zone (page 15). Make it!

To ensure the bar can be left outside undercover, we’ve used marine plywood as the front panel. Priming it all over helps keep it weatherproof, and choosing exterior paint will prevent the pattern from fading. However, it’s best to keep it out of the weather and protect it in windy conditions.

Safety equipment  9mm-thick 2440mm x 1220mm  sheet marine plywood Measuring tape and pencil  Circular saw  180-grit abrasive paper with  sanding block Mini roller with tray  Three-in-one primer (we used  Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Undercoat Primer Sealer Stain Blocker) 1m-long ruler  Mimosa ‘Coral Bay’ aluminium  bar table 50mm paintbrush  24mm-wide painter’s tape  Sample pots of exterior paint  (we used Dulux ‘Weathershield’ in Mallard Green, Marlin Green, Naked Rose and High Blue) 30mm x 30mm x 17mm  reinforcing brackets (pack of 12) 8G self-tapping sheet metal  screws in 9mm and 18mm Drill with driver bit  Method

Use measuring tape to mark out the plywood to 1490mm x 990mm, and cut with a circular saw. Tip: Have the sheet cut in store so it’s easier to manage. Lightly sand the plywood, then use a mini roller to apply primer all over, ensuring the edges are saturated. Apply two coats, leaving to dry between each. Use a ruler and pencil to draw your own graphic design on the plywood. With painter’s tape, mask off one area of your pattern at a time. Start with the darkest colour, leaving to dry before removing the tape. Tip: Work with one colour at a time, washing out the brush as you go and leaving it to dry in preparation for the next shade. Repeat for the remaining colours. With the design facing outward, place the plywood in position against the leg braces, checking the space from the edge is the same all around. Working from underneath the table, position four brackets along the top and each side, using a drill to attach them to the plywood with 9mm sheet metal screws and to the table with 18mm screws.

On the lampshade, use a water-soluble colouring pencil to create clusters of palm fronds (or your own design). Dip a paintbrush in water to lightly blend over the palm fronds to create a subtle watercolour effect. Trace over the palm fronds in light blue fabric paint to create a three-dimensional effect, leaving to dry thoroughly. With the lamp unplugged, unscrew the cap of the lamp base to position the shade, then reattach the cap.

Be inspired to create a stunning garden that’s easier on the environment

rying to maintain a verdant garden can be difficult, especially in extended bouts of dry weather. The trick is to choose plants with low water requirements for your space, without compromising on the aesthetics. ‘Dry’ gardening is a real art and, when done right, will provide you with an inviting landscape that uses very little water.

Design details A low-water garden can have a rich tapestry of colours and textures. For inspiration, Trystan Graham, co-director of Outdoor Establishments (outdoorestablishments. com.au), suggests looking to the Australian bushland. “A warm palette of earthy colours and dry foliage can be a stunning addition to the garden,” he says. Plus, it provides an

help you understand your garden and how you can better plan and plant. “Group plants with similar water needs together; that way, if you do include a handful of thirsty plants, more water can be directed to that zone,” suggests Angie Thomas, horticulture consultant to Yates. You don’t need to fill every inch of the garden bed with plants. Try including hard elements, such as boulders of local stone and gravel between plants. “It helps reduce the need for complete ground cover and helps punctuate beds and borders with visual intrigue,” says Trystan Graham. “Plus, this planting style complements a naturalistic dry garden style very well.” Aussies love lawns, but they are thirsty. Consider reducing the size in favour of beds or borders with low-water ground covers. Create a Palm Springs vibe, with a patch of lawn flanked by a garden bed of cacti, mulched with white pebbles.

Mexican sage (Salvia leucantha)

Drought tolerant once established, Mexican sage is a true hot-weather performer. It provides pretty purple flowers and can tolerate full sun or light shade, and little water.

The secret is in the soil The best time to plant is autumn or spring, as this gives plants enough time to get established before things really heat up. When planting, start by breaking up the soil well and mixing in compost and organic matter to encourage plants to root deeply. As a bonus, improving the soil can help boost its resilience in dry times. “Regularly incorporating rich sources of organic matter in the soil, such as Yates Dynamic Lifter, can help sandy and clay-based soils retain more moisture,” explains Angie. After planting, Angie recommends applying a generous layer of mulch over garden beds, vegetable patches and pots. 

Indian hawthorn ‘Oriental Pearl’ (Rhaphiolepis indica)

A hardy shrub with white blooms, it can tolerate full sun, sea spray, wind and frost. It’s great in a pot or as a low-lying hedge.

Kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos sp.)

Right plant, right place For a successful dry garden, always begin by choosing plants that have evolved to deal with hot, dry conditions. “Look for plants with silver, leathery, needle-like, hairy or waxy leaves,” suggests Angie. Plants with these kinds of features tend to lose less moisture compared with large, lush-leaved plants. “Go for Australian natives such as wattles, banksias, bottlebrush, westringias, melaleucas and grasses,” says Angie. “Or, for a Mediterranean feel, lamb’s ears, rosemary, sage and perennial statice are ideal candidates.” Once established, these plants can survive periods of low watering.

“Adding a layer of mulch will help reduce the amount of moisture lost from the soil and, if using organic mulch like bark chips, they add valuable organic matter to the soil as they break down,” she says. Make it count To reduce water waste, install irrigation. “It’s best to install a drip system that regulates the release and delivers water directly to the plants’ rootballs,” says Trystan Graham. This ensures plants receive a consistent amount of moisture, which allows for strong growth, flowering or fruiting. “Ensure you run irrigation at the right time of day – early morning or late in the evening – to minimise evaporation due to watering in the heat of the day,” he says. Check current water restrictions with your local authority. Keep an eye on your soil though. If you notice water pooling on the surface, there is a good chance it has become hydrophobic (water repellent), so despite watering efforts, no water is reaching the plants’ roots. “Try applying a soil wetter, as it can help break down the waxy layer and enable moisture to penetrate more evenly and effectively down into the soil, helping plants to get the benefit of any rainfall or irrigation,” explains Angie Thomas. ¿

revention is better than cure, so your best bet is to prevent your home from heating up too much in the first place. There are plenty of clever ways to get passive cooling on your side; it’s all about working smarter, not harder, with clever features that will lighten the load on your hip pocket and the environment, while making your home naturally more comfortable.

What is passive cooling? Passive cooling is all about strategically using shade, reflective surfaces and natural airflow to keep your home comfy. Most of the big decisions around this take place during the design stage, involving your home’s orientation and layout, and clever positioning of windows and ventilation products. Even choosing light-coloured exterior finishes, especially on the roof, can reflect a great deal of heat. While you wouldn’t reclad your roof just to improve its energy profile, principles of passive cooling could guide your choice of finish or window position when planning an extension. By the same token, if it’s time to repaint your weatherboards, choose a pale tone over a dark one. Adding a prefabricated pergola kit can be another reasonably low-cost upgrade; in the right location, it can significantly reduce the amount of wall area exposed to direct sunlight. Seal the deal Maximising shade on and around your house is a surefire way to a cooler home, but blocking all sun is neither possible nor desirable. That’s where insulation comes in. “Glasswool insulation is great for keeping a house cool in summer and warm in winter,” says Claire Cunliffe, marketing manager for Earthwool. “When choosing the best product to use, look at the R-value, as this indicates how well the insulation performs at reducing heat transfer. A general rule is the higher the R-value, the better the insulation will perform.” Insulation is particularly important in the roof space, as the roof is far harder to shade from the scorching sun than are walls. When insulating your home don’t ignore your windows. “Make your home more airtight by

insulating and sealing gaps to keep cool air in and hot air out,” says Stephen Procter, sustainable programs strategic delivery manager for the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. Windows let in up to 10 times more heat than an equivalent section of insulated wall. Stephen suggests, “You can also help keep your home cool in summer by installing shading or by simply remembering to keep your blinds down and your doors and windows closed on hot days.” Cellular blinds have a heat-reflecting interior lining, and provide excellent insulation by trapping air inside their honeycomb structure. Tinted window film with a reflective mirror finish is another way to stay comfy, as it can block up to 98 per cent of ultraviolet rays and 89 per cent of heat transmitted as infra-red radiation. Look outside the house for more clever cooling solutions. Outdoor blinds can effectively prevent heat and light from reaching a window or wall. Folding arm awnings and wall-mounted umbrellas are also brilliant at providing shade when you need it. For a more permanent solution, a shade sail can also block sunlight from a considerable section of wall.  bunningsau |

Need help from mechanical cooling on the hottest days? In humid areas, an efficient reverse-cycle air conditioner is the best, but also the most power-hungry option. For a balance between comfortable cooling and minimum energy use, set it to 23°C. “Standard air conditioners consume 3000-5000W on average,” says Jason Neophytou, HPM lifestyle expert. “To cool your home quickly, turn on the AC and ceiling fans at the same time. This rapidly distributes cold air, allowing you to turn off the air conditioning sooner and let the fans do the rest of the work.”

Go with the flow As the heat of the day fades, open windows to let air through. A gentle breeze can increase comfort, with a similar cooling effect to reducing the temperature by 3°C, as long as the humidity is 50 per cent or less.* Plantation shutters let you make the most of such airflow while still blocking sunlight. Stuart Hall, brand and digital marketing manager for EasyAS Shutters, says, “You can open the blades of EasyAS plantation shutters at any angle. This allows breezes to pass through while deflecting radiant heat and UV rays at the same time.” For best effect, be aware of the prevailing wind and open windows on that side of the house. Also, to fully harness the benefits of convection cooling, allow hot air to escape through higher windows, skylights and roof vents. ◆

Pool of talent Evaporating water from an uncovered pool does help to lower the temperature of nearby air, and ponds and other water features can provide the same effect. Fountains and waterfalls speed up evaporation, too, chilling the air even more. If you add a water feature to your outdoor space, position it near a window or door to create a zone of colder air that can easily flow inside. A pond in a shaded area near the window of a living space can also harness the power of convection for passive cooling; this means that, as warm air rises and escapes through windows in the upper areas of the house, cool air spills in to take its place. Just bear in mind that with any body of water, you’ll need to abide by safety regulations, so always check with your local authority first.

Perfect pairing Teal sits opposite coral on the colour wheel, so it looks wonderful when paired with warm pinks, golds, oranges and soft, blond timbers. “Warm, earthy hues such as dusty clay and rusty terracotta really help to contrast the richness,” says Rachel Lacy. “You can also try layering it with vibrant jewel tones like sapphire, amethyst and ruby for a luxe look, or create a cool palette and combine teal with inky blues, washed aquamarine and white for a beachy, ocean-inspired feel.” If you love the look of yellow and teal, Andrea recommends choosing a gold or ginger tone over a straight yellow, which will fade the bluey-green and make it look washed out. Also try to avoid pairing teal with colours such as bright blues, strong violets and vibrant yellows. “Teal tends to lose its warmth and elegance when paired with any of these,” says Rachel Lacy.

FRONT YA R D Landscaper Dale Vine (@vineyd) is well able to tackle complicated jobs, but he loved the potential to transform this house with only DIY-level skills. “It was a pretty typical Australian front yard, which was good, because we could show the things you can do in that sort of space by yourself,” he says. Paint was the major tool used here; the red brick gained a new look with Dulux Tin Cat, while the front door got a bold hit with Taubmans Mermaid Tail.

Green thumb A weeping cherry softens the front, and existing boundary trees were trimmed to tidy and lift the foliage off the ground, “which makes the space feel bigger,” says Dale. A boundary wall (above) was given life with star jasmine planted against weathering steel screens. “It takes a while for creepers to grow up, so for instant impact, the screens make it look good from day one,” says Dale. 

HOME OFFICE The smallest bedroom of the house was ripe for renovation into a home office, a project tackled by wellbeing expert Keira Rumble (@krumble). Keira had three goals going into this room: to infuse the space with the earthy, natural tones she loves, to utilise Bunnings’ range of storage and useful tech to create an organised work zone and, most importantly, to deliver a multipurpose room that could be used for working, relaxing or converting back into a bedroom. Chill out zone A second-hand sofa bed – found on Facebook Marketplace – makes the room multifunctional as a potential guest bedroom. With the serene green walls in Taubmans Mesa Verde and a weathering steel garden screen as rustic art (backlit by LED strips), the space is also designed as a peaceful spot to relax. “The light is a smart bulb, so it can be adjusted. I meditate quite a bit, so it’s useful to be able to dim it down and go into meditation mode,” says Keira. Indoor plants help to improve air quality and reduce stress – plus they look great!

Window wow The big window with its backyard outlook is a great asset for this room. Curtains from Windoware help diffuse the light. “Those sheers are also a really good hack. We put two on each side to make it thicker and more voluptuous,” explains Keira.

To hang new paper, mix up the paste according to the pack instructions, pour it into a roller tray then apply to the wall with a roller. Align the end of the first drop with the top of the wall and stick it onto the paste, then smooth it down and eliminate air pockets using a wallpaper smoother.

Diamonds in the rough For fences, brickwork and other rough outdoor surfaces, use a roller with a long-nap cover. “Longer nap lengths of 15-30mm give you much better coverage for rougher surfaces,” explains David. A paint sprayer is another good tool for covering large and uneven areas, or refinishing fretwork, wrought-iron furniture and similar intricately detailed items. If you’re using a sprayer outdoors, choose a day when the air is still and wear a painter’s respirator, goggles and disposable hooded coveralls. ¿

Which brush?

It’s crucial to choose the right paintbrush for what you need to paint. This will remove any loose fluff, and moisten the fabric to allow it to hold paint better than a dry roller. electing the best door for your home or building project from the myriad options can be a challenge. The type will often be dictated by the space you have available and where it’s going to be located, while style might be necessarily a little way down the list. Here’s our overview of the basic types to help you choose. Cavity doors Cavity doors slide into a wall cavity, making them the ultimate space-saving option compared with a hinged door, which needs space to swing open. Unlike barn doors, a cavity door doesn’t take up precious wall space either, so you can use the wall for furniture or art. The installation process can be labour intensive if fitting into an already built wall, as it requires the wall to be removed to fit the cavity in its place. You’ll need to consult a structural engineer to check the wall is not load-bearing. You’ll also need to be sure there are no plumbing or electrical services running through the wall, as these will need to be rerouted by a licensed tradie. Cavity sliders can either retract fully into the wall (‘flush jamb’) or protrude slightly (‘flush pull’). Be sure to choose the right hardware – the flush jamb style, for example, will need a flush ring pull in the edge of the door.

Barn doors On-trend barn doors are facemounted sliding doors, running on exposed tracks and rollers on the outside of the wall rather than into the wall cavity, explains Matthew Menichelli, director of Elevate Building Group (elevatebuilding.com.au). Barn doors have a strong, modern industrial aesthetic, great visual impact, and are simple to install or retrofit. “Installed over the top of any door opening, barn doors can make a feature out of an ordinary doorway,” says Matthew. Consider the weight of the doors and size of the opening; some barn doors can be heavy, so make sure you have the right hardware for the weight of your door. }

Core workout The major difference between doors lies beneath the surface. Know your cores to choose the right door for you. Solid timber: Solid timber doors are 100 per cent natural wood. Usually reserved for exteriors for the timber’s beauty, strength and security, they’re great for indoors where soundproofing, security and/or privacy is required. Solid core: These are engineered doors, made from wood by-products. They have similar uses to solid timber doors but are less expensive, and are often stronger because of the high density of engineered wood. Hollow core: Relatively inexpensive and lighter than solid timber and solid core versions, these doors have a honeycombed centre within a solid outer frame, and a veneer surface. While hollow core doors are ideal for budget-conscious makeovers, they are not great sound insulators. bunningsau |

Fix it

Get a handle on it Once you’ve chosen your doors, the next challenge is finding hardware. Quality hardware that is fit for purpose will ensure a more professional and longer-lasting result. The doors and door furniture you pick – for example, knobs or levers, square backplates or round – should also reflect the design of the house, says Belinda. Bear in mind that if you have small children or elderly relatives in the home, lever handles may be easier to work than knobs. For a cohesive look, choose a similar style throughout – for example, all made of the same material, such as satin chrome. ◆ 1 2

Flush and panelled doors Also known as hinged doors, these are the swinging ones we know so well. Flush versions have a plain profile, while panelled doors have detailed profiles that work in traditional homes or anywhere you want to add extra character. Hinged doors can be challenging to install, unless you’re a confident DIYer. But if you’re starting afresh, pre-hung doors – where you replace the door and jamb together with a pre-hung system – are an easier option. “They’re a great time saver,” says Matthew Menichelli. Always check the size of your existing doorjamb and the direction it swings before you buy. “Repairing, replacing and hanging doors yourself can save you thousands of dollars,” says Belinda Westblade of The 2 Belindas (renovateandrealestate.com.au). “Try to start in an area that’s less significant, such as the laundry. Because the area isn’t so obvious, it doesn’t matter if it’s not perfect, and each door after that will only get better.” Hinged doors generally take standard universal passage set door hardware. All handles are interchangeable, which helps to make revamps quicker and smoother.

anging a picture is a job you want to do once and do well – you don’t want to create more work patching up holes that missed the mark. Take your time to work out the best location and arrangement for your art and study our hanging guide, so you know which fixtures to get and how to use them. Location, location The best place to hang an artwork is where you’ll get maximum enjoyment from it, but out of direct sun and fluorescent lights, which can fade paintings and photos. Instead, consider placing a mirror opposite a window to reflect views and natural light. The scale of your wall and the size of your art will influence what piece works where. “A little picture on a big wall will look lost, so move it to one end of the wall or group it,” says Rob James of Right Hook Picture Hanging Service (righthook.com.au).

Larger pieces can look striking on a generous blank wall, while smaller pieces are often better suited to more intimate zones like a hallway or above a desk. To get a better sense of scale, Rob advises cutting cardboard to the size of the picture and sticking it to the wall with Blu-Tack. “You’ll know if it looks right and it’s an easy way to tweak the position,” he says. To plan your gallery, 3M senior brand manager Jen McDonnell recommends mapping it out on the floor first: “Use your main image as the starting point and build around it. can zone a space, so centring your wall hangings above furniture means they’re connected to the surrounding elements.” “Just over halfway up the wall at eye level is an ideal hanging height for most pieces, but it’s dependent on personal preference,” says Jen. “Wherever you choose, it should be pleasing to the eye.” Hang it all Two hooks hold better than one. For heavier pictures of around 6kg, use hollow wall anchors such as those made by Ramset. “For heavy duty – over 10kg – you probably need interlocking aluminium strips, using several wall anchors,” advises Rob. “On brick walls, use a plastic plug and at least an eight-gauge screw, preferably with a Ramset wall hook.”

If you’re renting and nails aren’t an option, there are ways to display without leaving a mark. Command removable picture hangers can hold artworks up to 2.2kg, while four sets of the Command large picture-hanging strips form an interlocking hold of up to 7.2kg. “For the best results, ensure the wall is prepped correctly by using isopropyl rubbing alcohol, and that pack instructions are followed carefully,” says Jen McDonnell. Stick within the recommended weight range and, when you need to remove them, never pull the strip away from the wall or towards you – always pull the strip downwards, gliding your hand against the wall to ensure damage-free removal.

oncrete-topped tables are a chic designer look. These pavers provide a smooth, perfectly round surface, making it easy to turn them into small side tables or plant stands. (While stable enough for use as tables, avoid using them as stools.) We’ve used three pavers in different sizes to create a trio of tables. Natural-finish sealer is applied using a wet-on-wet application, which means applying three coats quickly before the surface dries. Once dry, it has a smooth feel and helps protect from marks and stains.

Place the pavers upside down on a clean surface. Smooth around the edges with 60-grit metal abrasive paper. Place the pavers on timber offcuts to elevate them off the workbench, then smooth around the sides and tops with 120-grit metal abrasive paper. Spray tile cleaner over the tops and sides, wipe with a cloth, then spray with water and remove residue with a clean cloth. Leave to dry. Apply sealer with a mini roller, leaving it to soak in for a few minutes, then apply a second coat before it dries. Repeat for a third coat, keeping the surfaces wet. Wipe around the base to remove drips, then leave to dry thoroughly. Referring to photo 4 above, mark 450mm from the bottom left corner of the plywood. Use a protractor to mark 60º at the corner and your mark, then use the square to draw a triangle of equal sides. Leaving a gap of 3mm between each, draw a 370mm triangle along the top edge,

then a 300mm triangle. (Setting them out like this minimises the number of cuts.) Use a handsaw to cut triangles, following the order shown, working off the edge of a stable workbench. Tip: Cut along the outside of the line as the 3mm gap allows for the width of the saw blade. On the triangles, position leg plates 50mm from the corners, marking the holes and along the tips. Remove the corners with a handsaw, then drill the screw holes with a 2mm bit and the centre holes using a 6mm bit. Secure the leg plates with the supplied screws. Attach 150mm legs to the 300mm base, 230mm legs to the 370mm base, and 400mm legs to the 450mm base. Sand the legs with 180-grit paper and add self-adhesive glides to the bottom of each leg. Use a measuring tape to centre the bases on the corresponding pavers and mark around them. Apply adhesive, re-position the bases, clamp and leave to dry.

A standard 18mm-thick plywood sheet is 1200mm x 600mm, but since the table bases only require half, have it cut widthways in store so it’s easier to manage. The 18mm thickness allows for the length of the leg bolts and avoids having to drill into the concrete. bunnings |

On a length of pine, use a combination square to mark 280mm from the end, cutting with a mitre saw to make a tile template for marking out and cutting 28 tiles from the remaining pine. Keep the offcuts. Smooth the cuts and round over the edges of the tiles with 180-grit abrasive paper. Make a square stamp from an offcut, using a combination square to mark 140mm from the end, cutting with a mitre saw. To draw a grid, adjust the combination square to 70mm, marking lines horizontally and vertically. Adjust it to 35mm to mark around the edges. Remove the backing from six felt pads, positioning them on the grid to make a six-spot pattern. Use scissors to cut a 67mm floor protection strip in half lengthways, remove the backing and centre it along the base of the stamp, flush against the edge. Wearing gloves, pour paint onto a plastic plate. Hold the stamp, felt-side down, in the paint to saturate the felt pads and strip. Hold the stamp over the lower half of a tile and press to transfer the pattern. Repeat to make the appropriate number of ‘six’ tiles, reloading with paint every three tiles. To make the double-six tile, flip the stamp, line up the middle felt strip and press.

On the stamp, remove the two middle spots and position a new one in the centre, creating a five-spot pattern. Remove or add felt pads on the grid to create the remaining spot patterns and repeat. Tip: The felt pads can become saturated with paint and come unstuck, so check them before reloading with paint and replace as necessary.

To make the double-zero tile, take a full floor-protection strip, remove the backing and adhere it to a 25mm dowel offcut. Saturate with paint and centre it over the remaining blank tile. Touch up uneven spots on the tiles by adhering a clean felt pad to the dowel and reapplying paint as needed.

SUPER-SIZE CHEQUERS Chequers (or draughts) is played on an eight-by-eight-square board, 12 pieces for each side. We’ve super-sized the game by using a plastic-backed drop sheet as the board and painted terracotta pot saucers for the playing pieces. 1 Fold the drop sheet in half, then halve and halve again, pressing along the creases to create visible lines. Unfold the sheet and repeat the other way to mark out an eight-by-eight grid, then lay it canvas side up.

Along the first row, tape inside the lines of every second square, cutting the tape with scissors to ensure the outside lines are straight. Alternate the squares along each row, using the tape roll to press over the pieces to ensure the edges stick down. Tip: Add a tape offcut to the centre of each taped square as a reminder to leave it unpainted. Apply dark paint with a mini roller, saturating the untaped squares, applying two coats and leaving to dry between each. Remove the tape at a 45º angle and use a small angled brush to touch up the edges if necessary. Set out the saucers upside down and use the rollers to apply two coats of blue paint to 12 pieces and white paint to the other 12, leaving to dry between coats. }

GARDEN-STAKES RING TOSS The hoops in this game of hoopla are made of rope joined with copper, which adds a little weight for efficient throwing. Use the pipe cutter to make the connectors and watch the polyurethane adhesive expand like foam as it dries.

To make the copper connectors, measure five 50mm sections along the pipe, marking with a felt-tip pen. Use the pipe cutter by positioning it over each mark, turning it around the pipe, tightening slightly after each turn. Flip a 30cm basin upside down. Use a sharp utility knife to trim the end of the sisal rope diagonally. Run the rope around the rim of the basin, overlapping the end by about 10mm, and cut diagonally. Position a 100mm-long piece of cloth tape upside down. Thread a connector onto the rope, position the ends over the tape and dab polyurethane adhesive onto the join. Wear gloves to tightly twist the tape around it.

Move the connector over the taped join and apply adhesive into the ends. Position the hoop back on the upside-down basin. Set out cardboard offcuts on the work surface in preparation for the quickly expanding adhesive. Use a water spritzer to dampen the rope and spray into the connector. Tip: Moisture activates the adhesive to make it expand, and the rope will hold its circular shape as it dries. Move the damp hoop onto the cardboard, then repeat to make five hoops. Watch the adhesive expand, moving the hoops every few minutes to avoid sticking to the cardboard. When the foam has hardened, trim it away then shine up the copper with metal polish and a cloth. ◆

Succulent sensation What they look like Characterised by thick, fleshy leaves, stems or roots, succulents are a diverse group of plants that come in a range of colours, shapes, sizes and textures. They can trail, climb, clump, creep, form rosettes or grow into larger-than-life specimens in the ground or pots. There are so many varieties to choose from, you won’t be able to stop at just one.

Why we love them Succulents are drama queens without diva personalities. There are so many wonderful shapes, but having evolved to cope with hot, dry conditions, they don’t need much water and can survive a certain amount of neglect – perfect for indoors or dry gardens. They’re great in pots and hanging baskets and are inexpensive and easy to propagate. How to grow them Plant in free-draining soil or potting mix and position in full sun or part shade, depending on the variety. While they don’t need much water, don’t neglect them entirely.
