Gas swap

Whether you plan on heading to the great outdoors this winter, camping stove primed and packed, or you’ve decided to stick at home by the outdoor heater, you can find safe and reliable gas at Bunnings. Simply drop off your empty gas bottle (3.7kg or 8.5kg), pay for a replacement in store and pick up a full bottle. New gas cylinders can also be purchased‡

Plant deciduous trees. Buy barerooted plants and soak the roots in a bucket of diluted seaweed tonic for a few hours before planting to reduce transplant shock.

Clean, sharpen and oil garden tools like secateurs, shears, loppers, spades and shovels. Coat timber handles with linseed oil to protect and preserve the wood.

Prune roses, removing up to two-thirds of growth. Bin diseased material and spray stems with fungicide to control any winter-loving pests and diseases. Get on top of bindii. The prickles haven’t arrived yet, but its rosettes of fern-like foliage can usually be seen in the lawn in winter. Spray with a selective herbicide suitable for your grass type.

Clear gutters of leaves and debris. Consider installing gutter guard but make sure it allows for good water flow. Add a burst of winter colour with bright and beautiful annuals (our suggestions below).

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, always read the label, follow instructions carefully and wear gloves, a mask and suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.
