Customised closet

Before planning your wardrobe set-up, home organisation expert Sarah Cottman of Heavenly Order (sarahcottman.com) suggests you declutter clothes, shoes and accessories, so you only store items you actually use. Next, assess your needs and preferences. Is it a shared wardrobe? How will space be allocated – do you need more hanging or drawer space? Will you need open shelves for bulky items, bags and shoeboxes? Accurately measuring the space you need is crucial, says Lynda MacDonald of The Design Chaperone (thedesignchaperone.com.au). “When sizing up vertical space, allow about 950mm height for short hanging space, 1900mm for long hanging space, and remember to include a three-quarter hanging level if you need to hang shorter dresses or longer coats,” she says.

Hanging shoe storage is also a great inclusion, adds Sarah. “You can tier them according to usage and easily access the pair you want.”

For the cabinetry finish, look for colours and tones that complement bedroom furnishings. “Woodgrain paired with a feature metal handle is popular and adds visual warmth and depth, while handle-free creates a subtle integrated look,” says Lynda. She also suggests adding a full-length mirror on the front or back of a wardrobe door.

TIP: You’ll need a cabinet depth of about 55cm to accommodate a standard coathanger. 
