irst and foremost, first aid! Make sure you’ve F packed a kit to cover all sorts of eventualities. Pack for all weather conditions – and don’t forget the bugs that come with them. Map out your campsite location. Take note of the closest amenities and facilities available and grab a light to show the way after dark. Don’t forget essential tools such as a mallet to tackle tent pegs. Test out your gear before you go to eliminate the possibility of malfunctioning light chargers and flameless stoves. Stay hydrated. Keep fresh drinking water on hand.

Just remember, when using the cleaning machine for carpet and upholstery, Britex De-foamer is recommended so the dirty water tank doesn’t sud up and overflow.
Bring your flooring and upholstery up to a new standard of clean, with a DIY deep clean from Britex
D
eep cleaning carpets, upholstery and tiling can eliminate stains, nix bacteria and allergens and extend the life of your carpet, but it might have once been considered a cleaning task just for the professionals. Thanks to Britex, deep cleaning is a job anyone can master. Trust in your cleaning capabilities – and save some serious cash – by hiring a Britex cleaner.
WHERE TO START
Whether it’s carpet, tiles or upholstery, each surface has an appropriate cleaning wand that attaches to a powerful Britex Deep Cleaner. Handily, Bunnings offers combined wand hire packages, and there’s no need to rush the job – machines can be hired over a 24 or 48 hour period.
Stain spray, followed by a once-over with the carpet wand. Britex Odour Blaster will help tackle unpleasant aromas, and if a furry friend has left a particularly icky stain, turn to Britex Urine Remover. Sofas, dining chairs, car seats and outdoor furnishings can be cleaned and brightened with Britex Upholstery Cleaner. If grimy and stained grout is your issue, you can tackle tiles, inside and out, with Britex Grout & Tile Cleaner solution, plus the Britex Grout & Tile Brush, which attaches to the Britex deep cleaning machine.
LET THE CLEANING BEGIN Now you have all the tools at hand, simply set up and get started. For guidance, follow the steps on the Britex brochure from the Hire Shop or watch the helpful how-to videos on the Bunnings website. Once you’re done, empty the machine of water, give it a wipe down with a cloth and soapy water, pack it up and return it to the store. Voila! Now you can kick back, relax and enjoy your sparkling clean floors and furniture.
CORRECT CLEANERS
Make sure you choose the right cleaner for the task. Carpets and rugs require a cleaning product that can reach deep down and lift dirt particles. Prepare for the job with Britex Deep Cleaning Carpet Cleaner solution (one litre is recommended for three average size rooms). Need to deal with a nasty coffee, crayon or red wine stain? Zap it with the Britex Spot ‘n’ Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. †Available to order online or at the Special Orders Desk.

e love living outdoors, and the onset of the cooler months needn’t send us into mourning for our lost alfresco lifestyle. By embracing nature at home, we can blur the boundaries between inside and out, and enjoy all the best bits of outdoor living – fresh air and a feeling of tranquillity – with or without a roof overhead. In January 2020 she found exactly that in a NSW Blue Mountains home, complete with a tired kitchen that desperately needed her overall vision of a free-flowing floor plan and cohesive finishes throughout. Chontelle, a mum of three, describes her style as “Hamptons with a bit of drama” and it plays out beautifully here. Almost-black Shaker-profile cabinetry meets marbled benchtops and timber-look hybrid flooring underfoot. She opened up the kitchen wall to the home’s entrance in the name of natural light and flow, designing a cantilevered breakfast bar to show off the kitchen’s best side.
In a masterstroke, Chontelle replaced the original square window with a wider, rectangular picture window, which now also serves as a splashback with a garden view. The bank of cabinetry beneath stands like a console, just outside the centre of the action, while its drawers are packed with essentials that the kids can grab without crossing paths with the cook.

Behind the scenes, a butler’s pantry keeps small appliances and clutter out of sight. The only way forward for this designer was Kaboodle. “I know the range intimately and have so much confidence in it,” says Chontelle, who hosts design workshops around the country for Bunnings, “so I wasn’t going in any other direction.” She put together the cabinetry herself but credits the high-end built-in look to her carpenter and plasterer, who finished the kitchen with tailor-made bulkheads. Other luxe touches were the brass handles and wall sconces, which Chontelle calls “the jewellery that finishes the look”. Streamlined appliances The Kleenmaid slide-out rangehood and multifunction oven were chosen for their sleek style. “I wanted it all built in without features protruding,” explains Chontelle.

The dark side Chontelle used Kaboodle ‘Alpine’ profile doors but eschewed the usual coastal white-on-white look for black. “White is not enough for me. I’m always drawn to dark tones,” she says. “Everything you put against a darker backdrop punches off it.” Chontelle adds that the darker hues blur the boundaries of the space and make it appear larger, rather than smaller.

V J panelling Pantry with purpose “Space planning was a major consideration,” says Chontelle, who had to navigate the kitchen’s position as a thoroughfare between the home’s entrance and out to the pool. The butler’s pantry-meets-mud room is a multipurpose space to catch wet towels and feet before they come through the house.
Dine in With the wall between the entry and kitchen opened up, the breakfast bar is one of the first places that catches the eye. Chontelle’s furniture-like design has Easycraft ‘Easy VJ’ panelling on the back and 38mm Think solid surface benchtops in Vena Cloud. The space is a favourite hangout for the kids. “It’s where they eat breakfast and sit and chat while I’m prepping dinner,” she says.
Light the way “I’m a believer in functional light, and aesthetically appealing light,” says Chontelle. She chose downlights on dimmers with LED strip lights under the wall cabinetry to use while cooking. Note: all hardwired lighting and electrical fixtures must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Hideaway waste “No great kitchen is complete without a pull-out bin near the sink”, says Chontelle of her Kaboodle soft-close in-built bin, next to the dishwasher. “It’s an essential,” she says. “There’s nothing worse than having a gorgeous kitchen with a big, ugly bin in the centre!” ◆ bunnings |

hether your outdoor space is a balcony, courtyard or tiny backyard, a small garden can bring immense joy. The key to a successful design is great planning and clever strategies that make the most of the space you have, says landscape designer Mark Browning (markbrowning.com.au). “Privacy teamed with site-specific form and function often guides the design, which should also make the garden feel like an extension of your home,” he says. vibrant colour you’re after, consider petunia, calibrachoa and geranium, which will thrive in a protected, sunny balcony spot.” Design Expand your growing space by going up. “Choose baskets that don’t block your view and create a beautiful hanging garden with trailing plants such as ivy leaf geranium, or shade-loving scindapsus and fuchsia,” says Katy. Get a boho look with macramé hangers and terracotta pots, or cultivate edibles in an upright system like Holman’s GreenWall mobile vertical garden. Extras A decorative screen can help provide shade and protection from wind, while potted climbers like clematis or climbing fig soften boundaries and add a sense of seclusion. For ambience after dark, Mark Browning recommends wireless light fittings to highlight feature pots, while a ceiling-mounted outdoor heater like a Heatstrip radiant heater will add warmth without encroaching on space.
Furniture & accessories Look for pieces with dual functionality, like a storage box that doubles as a bench, and embrace dining settings with a petite footprint.
Lack of space, privacy issues, exposure to wind and harsh sunlight, as well as weight and access limitations, demand savvy design solutions for the balcony gardener. Greenery Before choosing plants, Bunnings Greenlife buyer Katy Schreuder suggests monitoring where the sun tracks during the day to determine if your balcony is suited to shade lovers or sunseekers; “A south-facing balcony can be very hot in summer and cold in winter, so choose plants that can cope with these conditions and consider lightweight pots you can easily move around.” If opting for smaller pots, Katy recommends giving your plants extra attention so they don’t dry out or become root bound. “Succulents are a great hardy, slow-growing, lowmaintenance option and come in a variety of interesting forms,” she says. “If it’s bunnings.com.au |

C O U R T YA R D To turn an uninspiring courtyard into an idyllic garden, offset hard surfaces with softscaping, balance sun and shade and add protection from the elements. Greenery Planter boxes, slim garden beds and pots are a wonderful way to soften hard surfaces, says Katy Schreuder. “Rather than lots of small pots, scale up and choose one or two statement pots to display feature trees like a magnolia ‘Teddy Bear’, or dwarf citrus, which can be underplanted with cascading varieties like dichondra,” she says. “Also consider plants with benefits, such as kangaroo paw, which attracts birds.” Design View your courtyard like an outdoor room and use colour to create a relaxing backdrop. “Keeping the colour palette light will ensure a fresh, bright space when working with limited sun,” suggests landscape designer Grant Boyle (figlandscapes.com.au). Alternatively, an arbour teamed with climbing varieties like wisteria, jasmine and dwarf bougainvillea can provide dappled coverage with the bonus of seasonal flowers. Look for modern shapes and a pop of colour when selecting furniture for a contemporary small garden
so check the mature height of plants and look for varieties that have beautiful structural form when not in leaf,” says Mark Browning. He suggests forest pansy, coral bark maple and crepe myrtle; ask in store for recommendations for your area. Design Consistent screening elements, whether plants or structural panels, can visually elongate perimeters. “For fencing, opt for a deep colour so boundaries ‘disappear’ and green foliage pops,” says Mark. Another tip to make entertaining areas feel wider is to run decking boards across the site rather than along the length, he suggests. Garden beds arranged with plants from tallest to shortest in a mix of foliage forms will create layers of depth and interest, says Grant, while a central expanse of lawn will open up the space. Create an indoor/outdoor connection, with windows or expansive doors that provide access between living areas and the backyard. Keep the style and colour similar across spaces to blur the distinction between inside and out; think complementary finishes, and coordinated pots and accessories like accent cushions. Extras For year-round coverage over an outdoor entertaining area, consider a timber pergola with shade battens or screens. Lighting feature trees and sculptures will enable the garden to be enjoyed at night, says Mark. Just be sure to leave hardwiring jobs to a licensed electrician. ◆

True to type Before you go plugging in any old globe, get to know the basic types. LED lighting is extremely versatile, energy-efficient and tough. LED stands for ‘light-emitting diode’, a solid-state electronic component that is small, durable and can emit extremely bright light for relatively low power consumption. Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are long-lasting and energy-efficient. They use the same principle as fluorescent strip lights, but the lighting tube is ‘coiled’ or ‘folded’ into a size similar

New for old The latest globes are designed to fit the same sockets as their predecessors, for bayonet or Edison-screw fixtures. There are LED equivalents Get smart With onboard connectivity to bluetooth or wi-fi, smart globes can go straight into any normal light socket and be controlled by a smartphone or home hub. Depending on your hardware, you can switch them on and dim them using voice commands, as well as set them to ‘random mode’ as a burglar deterrent when on holiday. Replacing halogen downlights with smart lights, such as the Philips ‘Garnea’, enables this control in every room of the house. “Once installed by a qualified electrician, the Garnea can be controlled by a Hue switch, via bluetooth on any mobile device or be configured to work with the Philips Hue Bridge,” says Mat Tankey, national business manager at Signify Australia (Philips).

for almost any old-style lighting solutions, from fancy candle globes to fluorescent tubes. In some situations, however, a CFL may be a better option: a warm white LED could be a bit glaring in a desk lamp, while a CFL may provide softer illumination. LED vintage-style filament globes channel the charm of yesteryear. “They have innovative filament technology, giving them a retro appearance that makes them great for decorative installations,” says Anne Desmond, business development manager for Osram. These designer globes also come in different shapes and colours, from amber and gold to primary colours and even flame effects! Watt, when, who The power consumption of a light globe is defined by its wattage, or how much electrical energy (measured in joules) is used by the light fitting per second. A 15W fitting will consume 15 joules of electrical energy every second to produce light. The brightness a globe emits is measured in lumens. Different classes of lighting (such as LEDs vs CFLs) vary greatly in how well they convert electricity into light, so check the lumen rating. Unlike incandescent lights, different LEDs of the same wattage may vary in their lumen output. To make it easier to compare modern lights to old incandescent globes, an ‘equivalent wattage’ estimate is often stated. A 6W LED globe may have a 600 lumen output, also described as ‘equivalent to a 50W traditional globe’. This means it looks about as bright as an old-fashioned 50W incandescent globe, which is a familiar benchmark for many people. Living colour “Colour temperature is the way we describe the light appearance produced by a light globe, measured in Kelvin (K),” says Mat. “Temperatures for residential lighting fall somewhere from 2700K (soft/warm white) to 6500K (cool daylight),” he says. ‘Daylight’ shades of white, with a more bluish tinge, help us concentrate and feel alert, while warmer, creamy beige whites create a cosy, relaxing vibe. For a complete change from natural-looking daylight, LED globes that have RGB (red/green/ blue) functionality offer countless colour variations. Usually controlled through an app, these globes automatically mix red, green and blue light to create the appearance of any colour you choose. They’re perfect for evoking a dreamy ambience or taking a party mood to the next level.

to that of incandescent globes. Halogen lights are often used for downlights. Technically a type of incandescent globe, they use a chemical called halogen which allows them to produce more light at a lower wattage than other incandescent lights. Some halogens are being phased out where there are more energy-efficient equivalents, such as LEDs. Incandescent light globes – the old-style glass contraptions that create light by heating a filament – are now largely phased out due to their low efficiency and short service life.

Safety tip If replacing light fixtures or downlights, always consult a qualified electrician
PRO TIP New technology is making LED lighting better at replicating real sunlight. “Osram TruWave* technology combines different LED chips to mimic the natural colour of sunlight, helping to reduce eye strain and support our sleep/ wake cycle” Anne Desmond Osram

hen Nicole and husband Tim decided to move into their family holiday house in Newcastle, NSW, they knew their beloved beach shack would need serious work to turn it into a full-time home. Packed with three generations of family memories (it was Nicole’s great-grandparents’ house), the 1915 weatherboard cottage had seen better days. “The roof was leaking, the verandah needed replacing, the floors were covered in black tar and there wasn’t a proper kitchen,” recalls Nicole. Room by room (Nicole estimates they are currently halfway) the seasoned renovators are renewing the cottage, their progress avidly followed on Instagram (@theshackreno). “Every little thing we fix has needed to be done for 20-plus years, so there’s a huge sense of achievement,” says Nicole. The finished rooms now radiate a relaxed holiday vibe. “There’s nothing pretentious about it,” she adds. “It’s still the shack!”

Welcome home The hallway owes its beautiful makeover to little more than a fresh coat of paint and well-chosen accessories. “It was one of the first spaces I tackled because it was easy,” says Nicole. Originally cream and blue, the walls were refreshed with Dulux Feather Soft, with Dulux Vivid White on the ceiling and wall panelling and trims. Above the back door, Nicole made the yellowed air-conditioning unit less of an eyesore by spray-painting it with Dulux ‘Duramax’ Gloss in Vivid White to blend perfectly with her new colour scheme.

Pastel perfection The soft blue of Dulux Miller Mood fulfilled Nicole’s vision of a “pretty coastal cottage”, inspired by homes she’d spied in the area. “I’d take photos of any I loved and match the colour as closely as I could at Bunnings,” she says. Replacing the corrugated iron over the verandah with transparent Suntuf roofing increases the airy ambience. “It’s made a huge difference to how light it is inside the house, too,” adds Nicole.

Sleep easy The master bedroom was one of the few rooms that didn’t have intact original timber wall panelling, so Nicole and Tim devoted a weekend to installing Easycraft wall linings below a dado rail. As in all the completed rooms, it’s painted in Dulux Vivid White with Dulux Feather Soft above to establish a sense of flow between spaces. Luxurious soft furnishings create a stylish sleep sanctuary.

Serene scene Get the look of a luxurious four-poster bed by fashioning a romantic canopy, as Nicole has in her idyllic guest bedroom. Using timber dowel, she made a lightweight frame to hang from the ceiling, then attached a pre-made muslin canopy with tab ties to flow beautifully around the bed. The fabric is matched by Windoware sheer curtains, hung from a timber dowel curtain rod to echo the canopy frame. Nicole sourced the bed secondhand and painted it in Dulux Antique White USA Half. Accessories, such as the basket-weave ceiling light, add natural texture. ◆

How to choose white

You don’t always need colour to create mood. Here’s why decorating with white will never go out of style

imply pick up a few paint samples and you’ll see there are more types of white than there are colours in the rainbow, ranging from icy cool to creamy warm and everything in between. The experts use different ones for completely different applications – a crisp, cool white may be used to highlight decorative cornices, for instance, while a classic warm white instantly lends a relaxed ambience to a room. “All whites, whether warm, cool or even neutral, will reflect light and create a feeling of space,” says Dulux colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr. Cool whites Unlike warm whites, cool whites have undertones of grey, blue, mauve or green, giving them a crispness perfectly in step with edgy minimalist architecture. “Cooler whites tend to display a more modernist or contemporary feel,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, who recommends Dulux Lexicon Half as “a bright white that looks great with stone and grey neutrals”. Rachel says, “Popular cool shades include Taubmans Miss Universe and Taubmans Cotton Ball.” Cool whites are also useful for counteracting yellow tones in spaces awash with natural light. However, pay attention to the ‘temperature’ of artificial lights in your home as these can bring out unwanted undertones in whites. “Cool whites in a room with blue light, for example, can make the space feel cold and unwelcoming,” warns Rachel.

Warm whites As rich toffee tones replace cool greys as the look of the moment, warm whites offer the perfect backdrop. “Warm whites that create a soft, enveloping effect are fast finding popularity,” notes Taubmans chief coloursmith Rachel Lacy, who recommends Taubmans Pale Cream and Mid Century White from the new Chromatic Joy collection. Beloved for their ability to create a cosy atmosphere, particularly in rooms that aren’t blessed with loads of sunlight, warm whites are typically favoured in older-style homes. “Creamy whites go hand in hand with traditional schemes, where they can highlight architectural features like timber fretwork,” explains Rachel. What makes them ‘warm’? Warm whites have a yellow, orange, pink or red base, which is barely perceptible to the eye but makes all the difference to how a room feels.
45
Pinky whites The new kid on the design block, pinky whites are slowly cementing their style status. “Pale, earthy neutrals create a warm, comforting space,” says Rachel Lacy. “With all the time we’ve been spending at home lately, it’s unsurprising these hues are having a moment.” Think whites that skew towards pale beige and rose, offering an irresistible cocooning effect that complements warm colour schemes. How do they differ from classic warm whites? “They tend to have stronger, more visible undertones, making them a more saturated white with an earthier, organic feel to them,” explains Rachel, adding they work well teamed with a warm white. Try Taubmans Washed Stone or Steam, or, for something stronger that nudges beyond a white palette, Dulux Treeless.

Neutral whites Also known as ‘pure whites’, neutrals are neither cool or warm. “Neutral whites are very versatile,” says Porter’s Paints colour expert Melanie Stevenson, who recommends Porter’s Paints Popcorn. “We call it the ‘perfect white’ because its neutrality makes it team with other colours easily.” A neutral white is also useful if you’re keen to stick to the same paint colour throughout your home, as it should work with whatever light quality and finishes you throw at it. Another neutral white to try? Dulux Snowy Mountains Half. “I have seen it go beautifully with timber and concrete in the same room, demonstrating how versatile it can be,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr. ◆

ometimes a change of scenery can be transformative, as homeowner Jenny discovered when the Bunnings Make It Happen team came to call. The resulting revamp of her Melbourne garden has led to a revived space, and a decision to stay in a home she once considered putting on the market. “Now it feels like an extra room, an extension of the house, whereas before it was just a back garden,” she says.
“A while ago I was thinking maybe I should sell up and move to the country, but I don’t think I’ll be selling now!” A plan to suit Jenny’s brief was for a sleek, lowmaintenance space. In stepped Make It Happen host and renovation expert Lucy Glade-Wright of Hunting for George (huntingforgeorge.com). “It was tired but a very usable outdoor space,” says Lucy. }

“It was flat, had a patio and grass area, but it lacked a bit of pizzazz. Jenny just didn’t know what to do with it, and felt quite overwhelmed, so she ignored it, which a lot of people can relate to.” In a matter of three days, the backyard was transformed, on a budget of just over $14,000. Into the zones Key to the redesign was creating areas for dining, barbecuing and relaxing. “If you’ve got a blank canvas, start thinking about various zones that might work,” suggests Lucy. “We designed a really simple layout in terms of the deck, grass, the barbecue space and pavers. It was what we added to it, such as the greenery, screens and water feature, that really amplified the garden and elevated it to a different level.” Deck for dining Step one of the update was to lay a new deck, which has been made into a generous dining zone complete with new festoon lighting woven through the overhead rafters. “Lighting brings in ambience, and we did that with the festoons, but also a coach light and candle lanterns,” says Lucy. “They’re great, especially if you’re hosting parties.” bunnings.com.au |

given a refresh with Taubmans Frost Fangs paint, while clever screening was installed to mask the hot water system. “That was a quick win!” says Lucy. A new dining setting is the finishing touch. }

Restoring some Zen The overgrown vegetable garden in one corner was given an update with raised garden beds, filled with a low-maintenance plant selection – rosemary, lavender and olive trees. This swathe of greenery adds balancing softness to the hardscaping features, while a pair of new decorative screens and water feature make the whole zone an inviting focal point. “Jenny mentioned that she loved the sound of running water in the garden, so the water feature was a bit of a treat for her,” says Lucy Glade-Wright. “It’s a nice way to bring a corner to life. On a sensory level, it adds a lovely sound – it’s very tranquil.”
Straggly trees were relocated
Plotting a path Worn grass was dug up, and the area levelled and returfed. Contrasting bluestone pavers and pebbles were laid to border the deck, forming a path leading to the newly created outdoor cooking and seating area. This zone is now defined by pale pebbles underfoot, a barbecue and comfortable chairs – Jenny’s existing garden furniture, revived with specialist oil. A coat of dark grey paint on the fence has brought a flattering backdrop to the revived space. “It’s always nice to bring in different tones, textures, and colours, the same way that you would in an interior,” says Lucy. “If you paint a fence in a charcoal colour, it can really help to lift all of your greenery and the other elements in your garden.” ◆

Let your work shine Call on Energizer to light up your DIY projects ®
T
here’s one thing all good worksites need, whether you’re a keen DIYer or professional tradie, and that’s good lighting. If you’re pulling early mornings or late nights to get the job done, or battling with a dim space, Energizer has what you need to light up your projects. Here’s what to look for.
ILLUMINATION The two big questions to ask yourself are, how bright does the light need to be, and how far does it have to reach? Each project might have different requirements but, simply put, the higher the lumens, the brighter the light. For room-filling illumination, the Energizer 500 Folding Lantern delivers 500 lumens across a 360-degree radius, so you’ll be able to find your way around the shed at all hours. Looking for light in a hard-to-reach place? The Energizer 100 Lumen Universal Headlight Torch provides 100 lumens with a 40m beam distance for up to nine hours, plus the pivoting head lets you direct light exactly where you need it.
RELIABILITY There’s nothing worse than getting to the pointy end of your project just as the sun goes down, only to realise the shed light has blown (or just won’t cut it). Cue Energizer’s range of handy, long lasting and reliable products. Not only does the Energizer 500 Folding Lantern provide 500 lumens for up to 50 hours, even in rain, it’s also built to last, so you’ll never find yourself caught in the dark with a half-finished project again. Another trusty sidekick you’ll want in your toolkit is the Energizer 1500 Lumen
Metal Vision HD LED Torch, Energizer’s new and brightest light. Built with aircraft-grade aluminium, they don’t come much tougher than this.
FEATURES Who doesn’t love a multi-tasking tool? If you’re likely to be working outdoors or at night, it’s especially important to seek out light sources that work as hard as you do. The Energizer 250 Lumen Vision Torch and 350 Lumen Headlight Combo is a duo up for the task: water-resistant, with night vision and a shatterproof lens, the head lamp will free up your hands, while the compact torch (made from aircraft-grade aluminium) will fit in any toolkit, and can switch between high, power saver and emergency strobe modes. If it’s distance you’re after, the 1500 Lumen Metal Vision HD LED Torch can reach up to 230 metres with an adjustable beam width at the touch of a button.

Grass act Losing the turf war? Restore lawn order with these expert tips
W
hether it’s a backyard cricket pitch, a picnic spot or a strictly for-looking-at lawn, a lush green carpet of turf can be the jewel of your landscape. But if yours is spoiled with weeds, bald spots and other eyesores, there’s no need to throw in the towel. Here are some of the most common problems and how to fix them. Problem:
Bald patches
Words Tammy Huynh. Photography Brigid Arnott. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.
Solution:
Thinning areas may have resulted from wear and tear, overzealous weeding or pest and disease issues. How to best repair it depends on your grass type; cool-season species experience shoot growth in spring and autumn, while warm-season grasses grow more in summer. Senior lawn expert Ian Thompson of Munns advises, “For cool-season grasses like fescue and rye, tease the damaged area with the tips of a garden fork, sprinkle lawn seeds over and water regularly.” Warm-season grasses, like buffalo and kikuyu, run and spread, so with the right care they will eventually grow and establish in the bare bits. “To encourage new growth, rake the soil in bald patches, feed the entire lawn and water regularly,” adds Ian. } Cyclone ‘Super’ garden rake, $19.95, I/N: 3360560

Dying brown areas Solution:
Brown patches can be caused by various issues, so it’s important to find the root cause before attempting to fix it. Ian advises digging a hole. “You can learn so much from this simple task – if it’s difficult to dig, it may be a sign your lawn is compacted, so try aerating it,” he says. If you find curl grubs you’ll need to apply an insecticide, or if the soil is dry, use a wetting agent. “These are simple solutions, but if they don’t help, contact an expert to assess further,” says Ian.

Pope ‘Partner’ sprinkler, $7.90, I/N: 3122370 Problem:
Crispy, dry grass Solution:
If you struggle to find the time to water, consider irrigation. “The classic silver domed sprinkler is an easy and costeffective solution, plus it has a great watering pattern,” says Ian Thompson. Connect it to a tap timer, set and forget. Do, however, check on the current water restriction status with your local authority. If you find that despite your watering efforts the lawn still remains dry, you may need to dig a little deeper. “After prolonged dry periods, it’s not uncommon for soils to become ‘hydrophobic’ or water repellent,” says Ian. A wetting agent will help water penetrate the soil and get to the roots, where it’s needed most.
Photography Getty Images, (top left) Larnie Nicolson, styling Sam van Kan.
Be careful when treating weeds in the lawn, warns horticulturist Matt Carroll of Hortiman (@hortiman); “Look for selective lawn herbicides, as they’re formulated to target certain weeds without harming the lawn.” Not all weeds can be controlled by a selective lawn weed killer, though. “Keeping the lawn thick and healthy – feeding, watering, and mowing – will help reduce the presence of weeds,” says Matt.
57
Fix it Seed selection Your choice of lawn seed depends on the look you’re after and the level of maintenance you can provide. “Take a walk and see lawns first-hand, and don’t be afraid to ask your neighbours how much effort is required,” suggests Ian. Cool-season grasses, like fescue, perennial rye and Kentucky bluegrass, are finer in texture than warm-season grasses, and don’t spread aggressively. As such, they aren’t considered to be as durable as couch, kikuyu or buffalo. However, these warm-season grasses can invade neighbouring areas or garden beds, especially if they’re not regularly maintained. “Both have their pros and cons, so just make sure your choice aligns with the level of time you want to spend on lawn care,” says Ian.
Mow problem A quality mower is essential for a tidy and healthy lawn, but which is best for you? “Consider the size of your lawn, how much power is required, and how ergonomic it is to handle and adjust,” says Matt. The main types of lawnmowers are electric, battery-powered and petrol. Electric and battery-powered models are great for small spaces. “If you don’t mind being plugged in and dragging the cord around, then an electric mower is ideal,” says Matt. For those who prefer the convenience of being untethered, battery-powered is the way to go. But if you have a larger area or need to navigate more serious terrain, petrol is the answer. It does need to be refuelled and maintained more regularly, but it’ll save time and effort in the long run. ◆

Wood workers “A timber gate will need a light sand and stain every six to 12 months,” says Daniel Baker, director of Beyond Boundaries (beyondboundariesfencing.com). “But some people love timber so much they’re happy to do the upkeep.” If you choose to build the fence yourself, give your timber time to dry first. “If you dress your frame too early, two weeks later the timber will have shrunk, leaving gaps and affecting the performance of the hardware,” says Daniel. Timber gates can also be quite heavy, so make sure the hinges can take the weight. Hinges also need to be durable. “If you think about how often a gate opens and closes, you’ll need something tough,” says Daniel. SpecRite 1800mm x 900mm merbau vertical slat gate, $119, I/N: 8500233

Metal heads Aluminium is a rust- and rot-resistant option, and one that you can often DIY. “To keep them looking good just give them a hose down,” says Adam Rassam, group sales manager at Protector Aluminium. They also come in styles from tubular to slats and louvres. “They provide more of a feature than solid-look steel and they’re nice on the eye,” says Daniel. “The slats open up the yard a bit.” Colorbond steel gates tick all the security, privacy, cost and maintenance boxes, says Daniel. “They’re almost impossible to climb over and are maintenance-free,” he adds. Steel mesh is low-maintenance too, while no-dig gates (and fences) slot into purposemade fence posts with no concreting required, but both these options offer less privacy. }

Fix it Security detail Most gates are secured with a D-latch and striker, which is more than adequate if you’re not worried about visitors (invited and uninvited) wandering up your garden path. For many homes, this is fine, with security covered in other ways – side gates blocking access to the rear of the block, or cameras monitoring those with nefarious intentions (see below right for more ideas). “Security ultimately depends on the lock and other hardware you choose,” says Daniel Baker. Locks essentially bar entry to everyone except members of the household, while digital versions provide keyless entry and added security using a push-button code.

Clear choice Glass gates come with strict safety standards regarding installation, hinges and latches. These gates are designed to be seen through and impossible to scale, so privacy is zero and security is high. This isn’t the sort of gate you’d normally choose for the front entrance, but for a pool surround, they’re highly practical and attractive.

RENEW A TIMBER OUTDOOR SETTING Even the most durable outdoor settings eventually need a refresh, and timber rewards your TLC with dramatically improved looks and a longer life. A simple revamp has made this set of outdoor furniture look like new.

Clean the surfaces, using a soft brush to wipe away dirt, dust and cobwebs.
1
Pour road base over the area to form a 50mm-thick layer, spreading it evenly with a metal rake. Cut garden edging to run around the area, joining the ends and positioning it vertically. Tap in garden edging pegs to hold it.
Use 180-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block to remove flaky varnish and smooth over cracks, sanding over edges and around corners. Brush all over to remove dust.
2
Wearing safety equipment, use a compactor to compact the road base, providing a solid base to keep the pebbles and pavers from moving.
Apply two coats of furniture oil with a brush, sealing along the timber and around the edges, leaving to dry for at least two hours after each.
3
Tap stakes into the road base to run bricklayer’s line for indicating the position of the pavers, ensuring there’s at least a 100mm gap between the pavers and the edging.
4
Wearing a mask, pour mortar into a wheelbarrow and add water gradually, mixing into a thick paste-like consistency with a shovel.
Remove the cushion covers and give them a wash. Tip: Add rubber feet or glides to prevent pooling water from absorbing into the timber.

CRAZY PAV I N G
Our crazy paving defines the base of an outdoor shower, but this technique could be used anywhere you want to make a statement at ground level

1
Sweep the slab with a broom to remove dust and debris. Cut angle L-shape tile trim to fit around the outside top of your slab, mitring the corners to 45º with a hacksaw and mitre box. Position the trim with the lip facing inwards, securing it to the slab with a flexible adhesive sealant, leaving to dry. Tip: Ensure the tile trim is deeper than the thickness of the tiles to allow for the tile adhesive and grout.
2
Wear safety gear and work over builder’s plastic to break tiles with a mallet, removing sharp edges with 120-grit wet-and-dry abrasive paper.
PRO TIP For any outdoor shower project, you will need to consult a licensed tradesperson to install drainage and plumbing connections
3
In a bucket, mix tile adhesive with water to a thick, toothpastelike consistency. Working in sections, use a square-notch trowel to apply a 3mm layer of adhesive over the slab and along the trim. Position tiles with factory edges against the trim, then work across the slab from the house wall, twisting tiles into the adhesive with maximum 50mm between them. Remove excess adhesive with a sponge and leave to cure for 24 hours.

Decide the paver size based on where they will go in the yard, but don’t go bigger than about 600mm square as they become too heavy to move. 2
Mix each 20kg bag of concrete in a wheelbarrow with about two litres of water, then shovel the concrete into the moulds. Use a 800mm-long pine offcut to screed over the top of the moulds and level the concrete. Tap the sides with a mallet to release trapped air, then smooth the surface with a concrete trowel and leave to settle for 15 minutes. Tip: If positioning the pavers separately, smooth the edge with an edging trowel. To position them close together, like we have, keep the edges at right angles for a snug fit.
3
Rinse and dry the pebbles, then position them randomly over the concrete, leaving them for about 10 minutes to sink slightly and prevent a lip forming. Twist the pebbles from side to side, leaving the tops exposed. Leave to cure for a couple of hours, then run water from an open hose over them to clean around the pebbles. Leave the pavers to cure thoroughly for 24 hours.
1
Make up the paver moulds by using a circular saw to cut 595mm-wide melamine shelving into four squares to be the bases. Cut 90mm x 22mm treated pine decking into sixteen 620mm-long lengths as the sides. Position the sides around each base, butting them at the corners, using a drill to secure the ends and into the sides of the base with 40mm treated pine screws. Spray WD40 into the mould, then cut builder’s film to cover the base and up the sides.
4
Use a mallet to knock the moulds from the pavers and pull off the builder’s film. Wipe with a damp cloth and use a paintbrush to finish with two coats of paver sealer, leaving to dry thoroughly. Use a shovel to dig 30mm-deep recesses to position the pavers. ◆

Custom cabinetry gives you storage with style and if you can do it yourself, you can save a packet and create something that’s uniquely suited to your home and storage needs. Kreg is your handy helper on the job, ensuring your DIY joinery is as functional as it is beautiful. Use a concealed hinge jig for cabinet doors, a drawer slide jig for smoothly gliding drawers, a shelf pin jig to DIY your own adjustable shelves, and a hardware jig to align every cabinet handle perfectly.
BUILT TO LAST If you want to enjoy your beautiful creations long-term, you need strong joins. A butt joint is easy to do and serves a purpose, but risks splitting the timber. Pocket-hole joins solve the problem by coming at the timber from an angle. Sounds complicated? With a pocket hole jig from Kreg, it’s as easy as drill, drive, done! The ‘drive’ part comes from Kreg’s uniquely engineered pocket screws; these have a self-tapping tip (no need for pilot holes!) and a head that’s flat on the underside, so they sit snuggly on the ‘shelf’ created by the drill bit. To make the formwork, cut 138mm x 18mm primed treated pine with a handsaw, so the inside measurements match the size of the slab. Use a drill to join it at the corners with 50mm screws.
Position the formwork, tapping reinforcing stakes around the outside edges, at least four each side. Use a level to check the formwork is straight, checking diagonally and adjusting as needed.

Pour in road base to 70mm high, compacting it with a tamper. Position builder’s film over the area, then use an angle grinder to cut reinforcement wire mesh to fit and set it on plastic reinforcement blocks. Use pliers to tie it down with 3mm wire.
Wearing a mask and working with a wheelbarrow, add about two litres of water per bag of concrete. Mix with a shovel, then pour to fill the formwork. Use a 1800mm pine offcut to screed the surface evenly.

Social climbers Gain privacy with these hardy and handsome climbing plants Bougainvillea Flamboyant pink, purple, red, apricot, yellow or white blooms adorn this robust climber over spring and summer. The ‘flowers’ are actually bracts, or modified leaves, around a tiny white true flower. It tolerates drought and coastal conditions. Plant in full sun, in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Look for dwarf varieties for small gardens. Chinese star jasmine Fragrant white star-shaped blooms profusely cover this evergreen climber in spring and summer. It’s fast-growing and will form a dense cover over a lattice or fence, eventually growing up to 4-5m tall and wide. For quicker results, place a few plants at the base of the structure, spacing 75cm apart.

Banksia rose Don’t be fooled by the sweet ruffled pastel yellow or white flowers – this is a tough, vigorous climber, which can grow 4-6m tall and up to 2.5m wide, ideal for screening or covering a pergola. And surprisingly, it’s near thornless, which makes handling a breeze. Grows in all climates, from tropical to cool areas.
