PAINTING THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME IS A BIG JOB, YET IT CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING DIY PROJECTS

Words KYLIE JACKES Photography LOUISE ROCHE

Though often put off, there’s no escaping the fact that your home’s exterior will eventually need to be repainted. Faded, flaking, stained or weather- damaged paint might be the trigger for the task, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to give the exterior a complete refresh and enjoy a colour change – exactly like this two-storey Queensland home.

Thorough preparation is essential to a great paint job, so get armed and ready with our step-by-step guide.

Before

Assess your exterior

Your home’s exterior materials and construction will determine the equipment needed and how you’ll approach the job. Start by assessing the different features and consider whether you’ll use different colours and stains to accent eaves, window frames, or timber elements. Decide if you’ll paint downpipes. You will need a brush and roller, with a paint pot plus roller cover and tray for each colour.

Next, plan how you’ll stage the painting. Identify natural joins or corners where you can section the house, and tackle one defined area at a time. To work out how much paint is required, go to the online paint calculator (under D.I.Y. Advice). Use a tape measure to work out the width and height of each section.

You will also need to determine accessibility and whether you can reach all wall sections and eaves you plan to paint. For a highset home, you may need scaffolding, which you can erect and use without a work licence, if the top platform doesn’t exceed 4m in height. For lowset homes, an adjustable work platform can provide good access and is easily relocatable.

Check if there’s rotting or damaged trim, rusting fixtures or any missing features. These should be repaired or replaced prior to painting. Cracks and gaps may have appeared around windows and doors over time, and these may need to be sealed. Also look for powdery or flaking paint and varnishes, mould or oil-based stains which may need special treatment.

‘UltraDeck’ timber stain in Merbau n Cloths n Plastic wrap n Stanley knife 1Create access Comfortable, clear and safe access to all painting surfaces will minimise work time and make the job much easier. Move outdoor furniture, pot plants and the barbecue. Clear or tie back any plants or trees that are in the way. Erect required scaffolding, ladders or work platforms.

2Wash walls All exterior elements to be painted need to be washed first. The easiest way is to spray surfaces with an exterior house cleaner, followed by a wash with a pressure cleaner, but avoid holding it too close to the wall or timber features, as it can gouge softer materials. Start on a low setting and test in an inconspicuous spot first.

Repair surfaces Create access

Painting the roof is a task best left to the professionals

Fill gaps

Wash walls Stain

South-facing and shaded walls can be susceptible to mould and mildew. Treat with an exterior mould cleaner. Scrubs marks that create a bumpy surface with a stiff broom or nonscratch scourer. Allow time for all elements to dry out thoroughly.

3Repair surfaces Repair or replace trim and mouldings that may be damaged, rotting or have rusty fixings. This is typical on joins in fibre cement sheeting, or around windows and doors. Replace rusty fittings, such as down-pipe brackets, or at least treat with a rust converter which can be painted over, as rust that is not directly treated will continue to corrode.

Cut in around trim

Use a scraper to remove flaking paint, then lightly sand to reduce the visible edges when painted over.

Assess whether a gap is intentional for ventilation or drainage before using a gap filler on joins that may have separated. This will give the painted house a more seamless look.

4Prep Remove any exterior fixtures you don’t want painted, such as house numbers, hose holders and ornaments. Non-removable external fixtures, such as switches, lights and meter boxes, can be covered with plastic and taped. Remember to remove light bulbs before covering and don’t seal vents on hot water systems. Cover paths, decks, handrails and stairs with drop sheets, taping down the edges. Plastic drop sheets can be cut to size to cover awkward spaces.

5Oil Consider the order of application to downsize any spill damage. Oil timber features first, letting them dry before masking around the edges to apply undercoat on walls or paint trims. Leave accidental drips on oiled surfaces to dry before scraping off, sanding and touching up with oil.

Keep in mind...

n Always use the right ladder for the job, make sure it has non-slip feet and is set up on a flat, stable and solid surface. Wear sturdy footwear, maintain three points of contact (eg both feet and one hand) on it at all times and make sure another person is nearby in case you need assistance. n Be aware houses built before 1990 may contain asbestos, and take care when removing old paint as it could contain traces of lead. For more info, visit bunnings.com.au/health-and-safety. n Check the weather forecast: if rain is imminent, delay exterior painting, and avoid painting in very hot or cold conditions. Plan to paint when it’s cool and shady, as paint may dry too quickly in direct sunlight, leaving brush marks and an uneven finish.

Tape up

6Undercoat The undercoat is usually a multipurpose paint, which primes and seals, to allow the topcoat to stick to the surface and resist problems such as stains or mould coming through.

Typically, a previously painted surface in good condition won’t need an undercoat. If the surface hasn’t been painted before, or is particularly glossy, such as downpipes, or porous, such as rough-sawn timber, then a suitable multi-step undercoat should be used. Also consider using an undercoat to help transition from a previously painted dark colour to a light colour, or when unifying previously contrasting colours with a new colour. Ask at the paint desk in store to help determine the best product to suit your needs.

7Trim and doors High-use areas, such as windows, doors and handrails, benefit from a semi-gloss finish. This gives a tougher, slicker surface that reduces scratches and marks, and helps with cleaning. It’s also a nice contrast from surrounding walls, usually painted in low sheen. Use quality painter’s tape on aluminium frames for a sharp line between window and trim.

8Topcoat Plan to apply at least two topcoats. Use an angle brush to ‘cut in’ around windows and doors as far as can be reached before rolling. Quickly move to the next section to maintain a wet edge, continuing towards a natural break in the wall. On rendered walls, where it’s not possible to roll before cutting-in dries, feather the edges to prevent a visible line. Seal brushes with plastic wrap between use.

9Finish up Before removing ladders or scaffolding, view the paintwork from different angles for accidental drips or marks that need touching up. Remove tape by holding it at 45° and slowly peeling away, using a utility knife to slice along bridging that can occur when thick paint dries over the edge. Take up drop sheets, replace exterior fixtures and furniture – and you’re done!

There’s nothing like a colour change to give your home a fresh new feel!
