Let’s get started! Gemma describes the KonMari method as a future-focused positive tool used to tidy, declutter and organise. It guides you to make decisions on what to keep and what to let go of, based on your personal values and beliefs, and what brings you joy. To begin your journey of decluttering and organisation, first commit to improving the way your life functions and flows. Gemma suggests visualising or creating a Pinterest board of your ideal life and what you want to achieve. This allows you to keep your eye on that goal when faced with the difficult decision of what to keep.

Take baby steps After committing, the KonMari method outlines tackling your possessions in this order: + Clothing + Books + Paper + Komono (things) + Sentimental items
Split each of these into subcategories and work from easiest to hardest; this makes your task of organisation more manageable. Sticking to the order will allow you to refine your skills in selecting what truly improves your life, preparing you to deal with the more functional and sentimental items next.

Space savers Some fruit trees can grow quite tall and wide but, fortunately, most of them are grafted onto dwarf rootstock or have a naturally small habit, so they only grow between one to two metres high and wide.

“What’s wrong with your citrus tree? Changes in leaf colour could indicate a nutrient deficiency” Chloe Thomson @beantheredugthat
This is perfect for small spaces or in areas where you can only grow in pots – just make sure the pot is at least 400-500mm wide. For more space-saving options, look for trees that have been grafted with more than one variety, or trees that have been bred with a slender habit, like the Flemings Ballerina or Skinny ranges. You could also try espaliering a tree against a wall or strong fence; trees are trained to grow horizontally along the surface, making the most of the limited space. Most fruit trees can be espaliered, but apples, pears, citrus and olives tend to be better suited to this form.
Pot planting “When growing in pots, ensure you choose a dwarf variety, as most full-sized trees are too large,” says Sue Edwards, marketing co-ordinator at Seasol. “Make sure it has good drainage and keep your pot lifted off the ground with wood or pot feet to ensure excess water drains away, otherwise there could be issues with root rot.” You could also prop the pot on a stand with wheels or a ‘pot mover’,

Take your pick Before you can grow fruit trees, there is one key consideration: “The most important thing to remember is that fruit trees need full sun, so they will need at least six to eight hours of sun daily,” says horticulturalist Chloe Thomson of @beantheredugthat, and host of Bunnings podcast Staying Grounded. Once that’s sorted, it’s just a matter of choosing which tree. “A good way to decide is to think about your favourite fruits, with the aim to grow things you eat the most,” adds Chloe. Most trees perform best in a certain climate. However, there are some, like figs and citrus, which can grow in both cool and warm climates, so always check plant labels to ensure they’re suitable. Also, bear in mind that certain fruits may require a pollinating partner (a second tree) to help set fruit, so if you only have room for one tree, ensure it’s self-pollinating. Citrus, peaches, apricots, pomegranates, figs, olives and certain pear and plum varieties are all ideal self-pollinating options, but if you’re keen on apples, you will need a pair.

will reward you with plenty of fruits of your gardening labour!
Love me tender To maximise your harvest, follow these top tips. Nourish me: Feed trees during the warmer months or periods of active growth with a fertiliser specific to fruiting plants. For slow release, try Neutrog Gyganic for Veggies, Fruit & Citrus. Be patient: Harvest times will vary depending on the fruit type. As a general guide, most trees will fruit within two to five years. Prune smart: Many fruit trees will benefit from a good prune in winter. “Before you prune, do your research as it’s handy to know how to correctly prune your tree so you don’t hinder next year’s harvest,” advises Chloe. Pest control: Be on the lookout for uninvited guests, who will find your fruits as appealing as you do. Most sap-sucking insects like aphids and scales can be treated with an oil-based product, like Yates Nature’s Way Citrus & Ornamental Spray. Monitor for fruit fly outbreaks and treat early in the season with Eco-Naturalure.
Tip For espalier, select a north-facing, sturdy wall that will support the weight of a fruiting tree
which has the added benefit of making it easier to manoeuvre the tree around, to catch the sun or protect it from frost. Containers do tend to dry out faster than garden beds, so you may find you need to water more often, especially in the hotter months. As well, a good-quality premium standard potting mix topped with organic mulch will help prevent the soil from drying out too quickly. Potting mix is Australian Standards-certified as either regular (shown by a black ticks logo) or premium (red ticks logo). “When choosing a potting mix, look for one with red ticks, which has all the goodies like fertilisers, water-storage crystals and wetting agents,” suggests Sue. This will help give your plants a good start to pot life.
fruit trees. Before planting, soak the roots of bare-rooted trees in a bucket with diluted liquid seaweed. While they’re soaking, prepare the planting bed. Add organic matter, like compost and well-rotted manure, into the soil and fork in well. “When planting, dig the hole twice as wide
as the root ball, create a slight mound in the centre of the hole, position the tree on the mound, spreading its roots evenly over the mound and then backfill,” says Sue. Firm the soil and water in well with diluted liquid seaweed – this helps reduce transplant shock and promote root development. }
Let’s dig in While potted fruit trees can be planted at almost any time of the year, winter is an ideal time to plant deciduous, bare-rooted

Citrus
Every Aussie backyard needs at least one citrus tree. They will grow in most areas, although some can be frost sensitive.
Olive is a gorgeous, long-living tree that’s loved for its decorative qualities as much as its fruit. Ideal for warm temperate and cool to cold areas, although severe frosts can damage fruit.
Peach
Pomegranate
Cherry
Avocado
The perfect summer snack, or if you prefer the smooth-skinned variety, plant a nectarine (they’re basically the same, except peach has fuzz). Grow in cool-to-cold climates.
You’ll need a little patience with this small-growing tree as it can take up to five or six years to produce fruit, but the wait will be worth it! Grows in most warm areas.
A Christmas icon, with its glossy dark-red fruit and sweet flesh. They need cold winters for fruit to form, so it’s best suited to warm temperate and cool areas.
Don’t buy smashed avo, when you can pick it from your own backyard. You need a compatible pollinating partner though, so check plant labels to see if they’re suitable. They’re not reliable fruiters in Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.
Fig
Banana
Mango
Papaya
Sweet, soft and perfect fresh or roasted, you’ll love growing this gem. Ideal for areas with dry summers and little-to-no frost in winter.
Although not a tree, this tall-growing herb produces masses of delicious fruit in warm, subtropical and tropical climates.
The quintessential summer fruit, which grows into a large branching tree. Look for dwarf forms for smaller spaces. Best in warm temperate, subtropical and tropical zones.
You don’t need to wait long for the fruit of papaya trees! They usually bear fruit within the first 12 months. Grow in warm, frost-free climates. ◆

veryone loves a barbecue – and not just for the tantalising smell of onions on the grill. It’s a sociable way of cooking that draws us outside and creates a sense of occasion. Fuel up Barbecues can be categorised into three fuel types: gas, charcoal or electric. Your choice should include consideration of your cooking needs and styles, the barbecue’s location (backyard or balcony) and your fuel options. For speed and convenience, choose an electric or gas model. If you’re prepared to wait for it to heat up, a charcoal barbecue can impart a lovely unique smoky flavour.
It’s also a good idea to factor in the cost of fuel when choosing your barbecue – bags of charcoal can add up compared with an electric barbecue which, as long as you can access an outdoor power outlet, has the added benefit of never running out of fuel mid-cook. If opting for gas, plumbed natural gas can be cost effective for a built-in outdoor kitchen; alternatively, LPG bottles give you the flexibility to move the barbecue around.

*Ensure your barbecue is completely cold before using a cover or travel bag.
Planning to cook fish for your family or friends? Look for specialised barbecue accessories, such as grillers, roasters, racks and foil trays. They really do help! Small options If you have limited outdoor space, first measure up where you plan to position the barbecue, allowing for generous ventilation and clearance from flammable materials. If setting up on a balcony, you’ll also need to check relevant regulations with your body corporate or local council. Then look for a model to suit the space and situation – portable and tabletop barbecues can be taken with you if you move. Trolley-style models often include storage for gas bottles underneath and fixed or fold-down side shelves to keep cooking accessories and serving plates at hand. Another small-space solution is a domed kettle barbecue, with models like the Matador Radiant Pro a touch over 700mm in length. Charcoal barbecues do tend to produce more smoke than gas models, so consider how it may affect your neighbours. They may not be permitted on balconies. Family friendly When shopping for a family barbecue, the first question is how many people you’ll cook for. While a model with two or three burners will comfortably cater for a small family of up to four people, a more popular choice is one with four burners (two under the plate and two under the grill). This size enables you to cook for four to six people and offers more flexibility in cooking styles.

Plan it Matador ‘Conquest’ 6 burner hooded barbecue with side burner, $799, I/N: 0096774
PRO TIP For the ultimate crowd-pleaser consider a dual function gas and charcoal grill barbecue, which offers flexibility attachment – or a smoker box – which is an accessory that can often be used with an existing barbecue to infuse food with a delicious smoky flavour. Camping companions Even when you’re away from home, you can still enjoy a barbecue feast, with portable models designed for camping or a picnic in the park. The Everdure by Heston Blumenthal ‘CUBE’ charcoal barbecue combines good looks with functionality and portability, and offers an authentic charcoal cooking experience. For gas, a small burner with a collapsible frame that can be easily packed into the car is the best option. Just keep in mind the petite proportions of these barbecues limit the quantity of food you can cook at any one time – they’re perfect for a few, yet larger groups will have to wait for enough sausages to go round. ◆
barbecue on the market is a six burner, yet you can still produce a feast on a four burner with additional side or back burners. Ensure laundry areas are well ventilated and clean surfaces regularly to help keep mould and dryer fluff at bay
“To fix streaks in stainless steel, rub with paper towel and a small squirt of baby oil or olive oil until you have a streak-free finish” Satya Bourgeot Pristine Professional Cleaning
D A I LY D U T I E S Clutter buster The first step to a clean, organised house is to curb clutter with good storage and routines, says Satya Bourgeot, owner of Pristine Professional Cleaning (pristinecleaning.com.au). “When surfaces are clutter-free they’re easier to clean, so ensure everyday items can be effortlessly put back where they belong, instead of accumulating on the dining table or kitchen bench,” she says. Dish duty In a high-use area like the kitchen, don’t let the dishes pile up. “Food spills and scraps can attract flies and ants, so wash and put away dishes, empty the bin and give the benchtops and stovetop a wipe daily,” suggests Toby Schulz, CEO of Maid2Match (maid2match.com.au). Bed head Make the bed each day and keep the sofa neat with plumped cushions and folded throws. These jobs only take a few minutes, yet help to create an orderly feel. Freshly laundered To stay on top of mountainous washing piles, follow every load through to the end and return clean clothes to cupboards. To speed up the process, consider investing in multiple hampers to pre-colour code loads. Bathroom blitz Give the bathroom sink and taps a quick wipe to remove any marks, splashed water and toothpaste traces. 1

W E E K LY W H I P - R O U N D Cleaner kitchen Devote time each week to a deeper kitchen clean. “Wipe out the microwave and use an antibacterial spray on kitchen counters, appliances, stovetop and element dials,” suggests Satya. To extend the life of your cleaning sponge, soak it in water and microwave it for two minutes to kill off bacteria. It’s a steel For stainless-steel appliances Toby recommends using a soft microfibre cloth with a specialised stainless-steel cleaning product. “To avoid leaving streaks, wipe in the direction of the metal grain,” he says. Floor crew A regular vacuum and sweep, followed by mopping, not only cleans but also reduces allergens around the home, says Toby. Try a microfibre mop with machine washable pads, and invest in a set of refills so you’re never without a clean pad when you need it. If using a string or strip mop, rinse it regularly. Dust bust For weekly dusting along skirting boards, shelves and surfaces, Terry Stevens, owner of Sparkle and Shine (sparkleandshine.today), recommends arming yourself with an ostrich feather duster: “Ostrich feathers are naturally
electrostatically charged, which means they attract dust, and the barbed fibres and natural oils trap the dust rather than simply pushing it around.” Bath time In the bathroom, disinfect the toilet and surrounds, mop the floor and address any particularly grubby grout lines. “After cleaning the bathroom vanity and shower, use a dry microfibre glass cloth to polish off any streaks or fingerprints on chrome fixtures,” suggests Satya. “It’s a professional touch that creates long-lasting shine and helps prevent corrosion.” Sheet shift Change the sheets and put them through the machine at the hottest temperature on the care label, using an appropriate laundry powder, to help deal with nasties like dust mites and germs. Scent of success “If it doesn’t smell clean, it won’t feel clean,” says Terry, who recommends spritzing room spray or your favourite natural oil to neutralise unwanted smells and infuse a wonderful aroma. “Use crisper smells like citrus for bathrooms, and warmer scents like sandalwood and vanilla in living spaces,” he advises. }

ANNUAL DEEP CLEAN
M O N T H LY C L E A N S E Fridge forage Dig deep into the fridge and freezer to discard forgotten food, wipe shelves and wash out crisper drawers. Also give the pantry a once over, quickly tidying the shelves and making a note of essentials that need restocking. Clear view A monthly window clean is less of a chore with an excellent squeegee, says Satya Bourgeot. “Using a squeegee properly can take a bit of practice but once you get the hang of it, it’s more efficient than any other method – and because squeegees don’t create a static charge that attracts dust particles, your windows will stay dust-free longer.” Machine maintenance Run a cleaning cycle on the washing machine and dishwasher and remove the kitchen rangehood vents for a thorough soak and scrub in hot soapy water. Fresher furnishings Choose a sunny day to take floor rugs outside for a shake and a good airing, and pop living room cushion covers and throws in the wash. Delete dust In each room, work from the top down, using a slightly damp cloth to gently clean ceiling fan blades, light fixtures, shutters, door handles and light switches. Then use a track brush to loosen debris in window and door tracks and follow with a vacuum. Outside chance Charge up the blower to clear out leaves and debris from outdoor areas and give alfresco furniture a wipe. bunnings.com.au |

Grout pout Address grout grime with a brush designed for the task. “Rather than an old toothbrush, use a tile and grout brush,” says Terry Stevens. “They are great for many areas, not just tiles, as the bristles are stiffer and the narrow profile makes it incredibly effective in tackling stubborn marks in hard to reach areas, like around bathroom taps, that spot between the kitchen sink and wall, and even around stove hotplates,” he explains.

Use a specialised deck cleaning product outdoors to prevent built-up grime and mould damaging timber
Those annual or biannual household jobs can be hard to keep track of, so Satya suggests keeping a chores calendar to maintain a record of when a seasonal task was done and when it’s due next. Best pests An annual job to schedule is pest control, whether you call in a professional or use a DIY kit, like Hovex indoor and outdoor surface spray. Oven baked If there’s an unpleasant smell or smoke coming from your oven when you turn it on, it’s a sign it’s overdue for a thorough clean, says Toby Schulz. “For a heavy-duty option, use a product like Selleys ‘Oven Clean’, or make your own all-natural solution with a combination of baking soda, water and vinegar you can spray on to help lift off grease and grime with a good scrub.” Degrime outdoors Devote a day or two outdoors to clear out gutters, pressure clean paths, driveways and exterior walls, and give outdoor furniture a wash with a bucket of hot water mixed with dishwashing detergent and two cups of vinegar to inhibit mould growth. Rug refresh Set aside a weekend to hire a Britex carpet cleaning machine. “It’s an affordable and really effective way to steam clean carpets and upholstered furniture, and you can even get an attachment to clean tiles and grout,” explains Toby. “You’ll see and feel the difference.” ◆

We all know that person whose eagle eyes are drawn to the one part of the house you couldn’t reach. Don’t get caught out by stray dust. Before company calls, give those areas a quick flick with the Oates Wool Duster with Telescopic Handle, which is tall enough to scoop out cobwebs from cornices or dust from tall cabinets.
A thick pelt of dog hair is the sort of accessory your couch does not need! Before guests perch on your sofa and collect a layer of fur on their good clothes, swipe it away with an Oates Electrostatic Pet Hair Brush. Rubber bristles quickly collect stray strands into clumps that you can easily pick up and pop in the bin before anyone sees them.
Just as the doorbell rings, you spot some stray crumbs! Keep the Oates Space Saver Dustpan Set in an easy-access spot for just such emergencies. The rubber blade and electrostatic bristles are more effective than a regular brush, making cleaning up those pesky strays a breeze.
When you want shiny floors speedily, the most efficient tool is a three-in-one mop like the Oates Triple Action Flat Mop. Its three mop pads (refills available) can be changed in seconds. Start with the microfibre sweeping pad to scoop up dust, swipe over the floor with the mopping pad, then use a finishing cloth to get the floor dry and ready to walk on in no time.

Update it Laundry reno
Star renovators were put through the wringer with this laundry makeover challenge – but triumphed!
A
ny skerrick of vintage charm had long since washed away from the laundry at the home of Lucy Glade-Wright and Jonno Rodd of Hunting for George (huntingforgeorge.com). There was nothing for it but to gut the room and start from scratch – and it has certainly paid off. The new, chic, user-friendly laundry has loads of bench space, storage, new appliances and brandnew fixtures, fittings and furnishings. “I’ve never had a proper laundry and I feel like an adult now!” says Lucy.
The forgotten room Lucy and Jonno’s existing laundry had been tacked onto their Melbourne terrace decades prior, and over the years had undergone some odd embellishments. “It had three different types of flooring: concrete, old Baltic pine and brick. There were odd bits in the wall, and there was a door to the outside toilet that didn’t work,” recalls Lucy. “That was our problem room. It was a mess, had zero functionality and it gave me the chills thinking about renovating it. But this is where Jonno came to life. He just took over!”
Lucy & Jonno’s reno tips
Ply floors: Affordable and hardwearing, ply doesn’t soak up water easily, making it a good option for the laundry area. “It was costeffective and looks good,” says Lucy. Sliding doors: A sliding door saves space, and in Lucy and Jonno’s laundry the barn door also doubles as an interior feature. “The functionality of the barn door is brilliant,” says Lucy. Walls: If your walls are looking a little bland, or need some TLC, Easycraft EasyCLAD VJ panels are easy to install on existing walls, creating a fresh, characterful look. “They were an absolute lifesaver,” says Lucy. Decor hacks: It’s the finer details that complete a space. In the laundry, Lucy added plants and a piece of art. “That made it premium. Why shouldn’t the laundry be a nice space if you have to spend time there?” says Lucy. ECOply 2400mm x 1200mm x 17mm PLYfloor structural flooring, $86, I/N: 0390075*, in Feast Watson ‘Liming White’ timber finish, $42.30/1L, I/N: 1564639. All other products, stylist’s own. Before
Floors first The floor was unsalvageable so, constrained by a tight budget, the couple replaced it with structural ply. “I knew it would look lovely and add a soft, natural element to the room, with everything else being quite neutral,” says Lucy, who gave the ply a light whitewash to tie the flooring in with the rest of the house. Wonder walls Easycraft EasyCLAD wet area VJ panels were the secret to creating a seamless space. Timber beams were fixed over existing walls, with the panelling installed on top. “They were easy to put up and gave us walls with instant texture,” explains Lucy. The room was painted a soft grey with trims in white. These colours complement the Dulux Powdered Gum feature wall outside the laundry, which is visible as you enter through the sliding barn door, painted in Dulux Black Caviar. Creating order The couple installed Kaboodle cabinetry in Macaroon along one wall and above the bench, with base cabinets in Molasses below the bench, delivering plenty of storage and bench space. The benchtop – Kaboodle’s Black Pudding – runs the length of the room for maximum folding space. “Black Pudding was the closest I could get to black without it being flat black, and it had enough irregularity to feel like an organic product,” says Lucy. ◆

EXPERT TIP
Words Tammy Huynh
For any hard-to-remove gummy sap, dip a wire brush or scourer into methylated spirits and gently rub the surfaces to remove. Take care when working with blades as they can be quite sharp
1 Bondall Ranex ‘Rustbuster’ rust converter, $13.45/250ml, I/N: 1560855. 2 Josco 4 row long stainless steel wire brush, $9.95, I/N: 6110547. 3 Rocket medium grade steel wool, $4.40, I/N: 1661306. 4 WD-40 ‘Specialist’ rust prevention lanolin lubricant, $13.90/300g, I/N: 0019345. 5 Cyclone secateur volute spring, $5.50/pack of 2, I/N: 3365748. 6 Stanley quick clamp vice, $59.98, I/N: 5860181. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
Ditch the dirt Start with a clean slate by removing dirt and debris from your tools. Use a damp cloth to wipe the blades of secateurs, loppers, shovels and forks. For caked dirt, scrub with water and a stiff wire brush. If rust has formed on any surfaces, gently remove with steel wool and mineral oil. For heavy rust, clean with a rust remover. “With cutting tools, it may be necessary to remove the pivot nut and springs to help remove grime caught between the blades – a degreaser can help make fast work of this,” advises horticulturist Matthew Carroll of Hortiman (@hortiman). “Don’t forget to put the small parts in a safe place, otherwise reassembly will be tricky.”
Looking sharp It’s important to keep a sharp edge on your tools – digging as well as cutting implements – as sharp blades will cut more effectively and efficiently. Digging tools Clamp your spade or shovel in a vice. Using the angle on the blade of the tool as a guide, run a mill file over the bevelled edge, using the full length of the file. Don’t pull the file towards you, as this will damage the teeth and dull the file. Use straight, even strokes as you work your way across the entire blade. “As you do this, small burrs will appear on the other side of the blade. To remove them, simply place the file flat along the back side of the spade and draw it gently toward you,” says Matthew. Secateurs, shears and loppers For the most part, these tools are sharpened in the same way, although dismantling secateurs and loppers will make them easier to work with – put all the bits to one side so you don’t lose them, and get replacement secateur springs if necessary. Pass the file or sharpener over both sides of the cutting blade, maintaining the angle from the pivot point and using the file in one direction. “Reassemble parts, but don’t do them up too tightly as this will stop them from opening and closing properly,” says Matthew. Once sharpened, wipe surfaces clean and lightly oil blades with a rust-preventative lubricant. } bunnings |

Care and condition When servicing tools, don’t forget the handles! Sand timber handles until smooth and wipe them down with a rag coated in linseed oil. This will help prevent them from drying out, cracking and splintering. Wipe away any excess oil and ensure the tools are completely dry before storing away. If handles are weak or broken, it’s best to replace them – you can often find replacement parts in store.

Wheelie good Wheelbarrows are the workhorses of the garden, so it’s no surprise parts eventually wear out. Luckily, they can be easily replaced. From the tray to the wheel, spare parts can be found in store (ask at the special orders desk). For the most part, all you will need is a screwdriver to assist with replacement. bunnings.com.au |

Lawn abiding If you love your lawn, you will need to get into the habit of caring for your mower. But before performing any maintenance, ensure the engine is cold, the throttle is off and disconnect the spark plug, to prevent any accidental start-ups. It’s also very important not to place the mower on its side or upside down, otherwise the oil will make its way into parts of the engine it shouldn’t, affecting starting and possibly stopping it running at all. Only ever tip a petrol mower with the spark plug in the air, which for most engines is backwards. Check both the spark plug and air filter to see if they need to be cleaned or replaced. “Dirty plugs in particular can make starting difficult, resulting in reduced engine power and increased fuel usage,” advises Wayne Beckwith, national training manager for Ryobi. Also check the oil level and top up if required, or replace as per the manufacturer’s recommended intervals. Use an anti-rust/lubricating spray on any moving linkages such as the throttle and self-drive cables. Clean the underside of the deck of all built-up grass and, while you’re there, check the condition of the blades. Blades can differ between models, so it’s important to understand what type of blades you have. “Most models will have two to four swing back blades, while others will have a single bar. Swing back blades need to be completely replaced including the nuts and washers, but bar blades can be sharpened if you’re handy with an angle grinder. Otherwise, a local mower shop will be able to assist,” says Wayne. ◆
Maintain momentum To keep your tools performing at their best – and save yourself a bigger service job at the end of the season – follow these regular maintenance tips: After every use, clean the blades of pruning tools with a damp cloth, sterilise the edges with a solution of one-part bleach to 10-parts water, and lightly spray parts and joints with oil. Allow tools to completely dry before storing in a cool, dry place. Hang large tools and insert steel blades of smaller tools into a bucket of sand moistened with vegetable or motor oil. Sharpen blades at least once every season and oil timber handles two or three times a year.

Hen party
Chickens can be a joyful addition to your backyard, paying for their keep with eggs, fertiliser for your garden and hours of entertainment for the whole family
A
supply of freshly laid eggs, straight from your backyard, is very appealing – and just one of the rewards of keeping chooks. These fun, feathery friends do require a bit of TLC, though: read on for the lowdown on how to raise healthy, productive hens.

Spaced out You don’t need masses of yard to have happy chooks, but you will need room for a secure coop and a fenced-in area with room to roam. “Allow them out to have a scratch in the garden so they can find bugs, eat dirt and have a good forage and play in the dust,” says Fiona Scott-Norman, author of This Chicken Life and owner of eight bantam hens.

“They floof it up around them and it gets into the feathers; this helps to control lice, mites, and excess oil. If they can have a dust bath in the sun, they couldn’t be happier.” Fiona recommends allowing at least a couple of square metres of
space per chicken. “If you’ve just got a concrete square, that would be a sad life for a chicken,” she says. Aaron Hollingworth, brand manager at Pinnacle Hardware, says coops should be put in an area that enjoys both sun and

shade. “Ideally it would catch the morning sun, but be shaded in the afternoon,” he says. “If you’re going to let the chickens roam free during the day, the coop should be connected to (or situated within) a roaming area called a run, so the chooks can come and go and nest and roost as needed.” Flock focus Chickens are social animals so aim to keep at least three. “If one passes away, your chickens will still have a friend without needing to introduce new hens, which can be difficult,” says Aaron. In an urban backyard, start with three to four birds and no roosters – neighbours are unlikely to enjoy their noise, and many councils won’t permit them anyway. Contact your local council for chicken regulations.
Healthy hens There are several parasites, such as lice, ticks and mites, that can harm hens, so check the state of your chooks’ health daily. If they’re listless, have little appetite, signs of wounds and feather loss, or discharge from their nostrils or eyes, seek veterinary advice. While chickens naturally take a dust bath to remove lice and mites, they may also need treatment with a powder or spray product, and the coop could also require a thorough clean and treatment. Worms can be prevented with natural remedies or a regular dose of wormer; but foamy or blood-stained droppings can indicate their presence – treat hens with a poultry worming solution and read the packaging for advice about avoiding eating the eggs for a set period. Blood in droppings can also be a sign of an intestinal disease called coccidiosis – medication is available to treat this. A limping hen with roughish red patches on her feet may have bumblefoot, a bacterial infection that in the early stages can be easily treated, but may need antibiotics and bandaging. For any concerns about your chickens’ health and their ongoing care, such as worming and vaccination, consult your local vet clinic. Remember to always practise good hygiene when handling your hens; wear protective gloves when cleaning out the coop, wash your hands thoroughly and do not eat or prepare food near where they live. Find the right coop A coop needs shelter from the elements and a raised area to keep chooks comfortable and dry. Adequate space for your birds to roost and nest is vital, along with laying boxes and easy access to collect eggs, says Aaron. “Well-designed chicken coops made from timber are great because they are naturally breathable and are not as susceptible to condensation,” he says. In coops of about two square
metres, three to four hens is a good number. “If your chickens don’t have enough space, you could experience issues such as excessive noise, feather picking, bullying and fighting,” explains Aaron. The RSPCA recommends at least 20cm of perch for each hen. “Chickens like to be off the ground when they sleep because they are a jungle bird, originally,” says Fiona. “They come from roosting in trees.” She recommends flat rather
than round perches (as chickens cling with their toes), and placed at different heights so the pecking order can play out. Avoid positioning perches above laying boxes or their food and water supply, as chickens poo while perching. Coops need to be easy to regularly clean; removable floor trays are handy, and you need good bedding, such as pine shavings and shredded cardboard, to soak up the chook droppings. Changing }

“Chickens are prey animals. All of their behaviour is about avoiding being taken by a predator. They really understand it, but we don’t. It is our job to look after them. We are responsible for their safety” Fiona Scott-Norman author and chicken owner
their bedding depends on how many chooks you have and how much waste they generate, but on average bedding should be changed weekly, and the coop should have a good clean out around every month. “Don’t position the coop too close to your house, as chooks can attract insects and rodents, and produce an odour that you may want to keep at a distance from your living room,” says Aaron Hollingworth. Ammonia, a natural by-product found in poultry manure, is generally the primary cause of the smell. Keeping the coop clean and dry will help manage this. Old bedding and chicken manure can make fantastic fertiliser – just be sure to leave it for six to nine months to cure or compost, otherwise its high nitrogen content could burn your plants. Alternatively, a handful or so can be dissolved in a bucket of water to make a liquid manure.
Bringing up babies If you want the whole hatching-egg-and-fluffychick experience, be prepared for the initial outlay, effort and patience required – your first egg won’t be laid until at least four months later! “You can buy fertilised eggs, which can still be viable up to two weeks after they’re laid and still get put under a hen and grow into a chicken,” says Fiona. Although a broody chicken is best to hatch an egg, you can do this at home. There’s a lot involved in the process (and a 50 per cent chance they’ll be boys). For more information on hatching eggs, visit poultryaustralia.com.au/hatching-fertile-eggs. Alternatively, you can buy day-old or several-day-old chicks from hatcheries and pet chicken farms – if they’re sexed at birth you’re much more likely to get hens – but you may need to get them vaccinated. Once your chicks have arrived, you’ll need to keep them indoors for at least the first five weeks (longer in winter), in a brooder box that’s lined with absorbent bedding, warmed with a source of heat – such as a heat lamp or hot water bottle – and netted, as little chicks can flutter and leap out. They’ll also need special chick food (from pet food suppliers) and plenty of fresh water. Safe and secure The coop needs to protect your flock from dogs, snakes, rodents and, most of all, foxes – even in the city. Consider how the placement of the coop might discourage predators accessing it and regularly check its security. Locating a coop on sturdy hard ground can help deter predators, as well as positioning it within view of your home so you have a direct line of sight in case something’s afoot, says Aaron. A wire base can help to stop foxes digging underneath to enter the coop, as can wire dug under the ground around it. Make sure the wire is at least 1mm thick, as foxes can tear
chicken wire with their teeth and squeeze through small holes. You could also surround the coop with sturdy steel mesh. “Chickens put themselves to bed around dusk, but you do need to make sure they’re securely locked up at night,” says Fiona. Don’t forget to unlock the door first thing – and keep it propped open during the day – to allow hens to roam freely in and out to lay their eggs or keep safe. Feeding time Happy, healthy hens will lay delicious and nutritious eggs, and a good diet ensures this. Hens are omnivores, so they enjoy seeds, grains, grass, fruit
Expect about six eggs a week per hen, less in cooler months when they slow or stop laying due to fewer daylight hours
and vegetables, along with insects and other protein. “Buy feed, such as mixed grain or pellets, from a feed store or a pet shop, and make sure they can access it all the time,” says Fiona. To prevent spillage – and rats – use a hanging feeder, which can be raised as your hens grow. Then use kitchen scraps as treats. “They’ll eat what they want, but clean it up at the end of the day, or you will attract rats,” advises Fiona. Don’t feed chooks salty or spoiled food scraps. Potato, avocado, chocolate, citrus fruit, rhubarb leaves, onion, garlic and uncooked beans and rice should all be avoided. But do include dried and crushed
WHAT BREED? There is a large variety of backyard breeds. You can mix and match, but don’t go overboard with the numbers. Buy vaccinated birds, aged around 16-24 weeks old (at ‘point of lay’), from reputable breeders.

Egg care and safety Eggs are porous and arrive with a bloom – a gelatinous protective outer layer – that seals the shell. Washing eggs can remove this layer, and actually increases the risk of bacteria like salmonella and listeria entering the egg. Instead, it’s better to lightly brush eggs clean, advises Fiona. This is important as once an egg is cracked, chicken faeces on the outside of the shell can contaminate the egg. Salmonella can also manifest in chicken ovaries, making its way into the egg. To prevent disease and pathogens, buy chickens from reputable breeders and be vigilant at maintaining their health and wellbeing. While the frequency of salmonellacontaminated eggs in Australia is very low, it can be a serious illness for the elderly, those with chronic conditions, infants and pregnant women. Reduce the risk from salmonella by avoiding using cracked or dirty eggs, and cook eggs properly (salmonella is killed at 74°C*). For more information about avoiding salmonella contamination, see australianeggs.org.au. For advice on how to enjoy eggs safely, visit foodauthority. nsw.gov.au or betterhealth.vic.gov.au.

Have the plywood sheet cut in store (ours is 2000mm long and 600mm wide). Mark up the peg set out, ensuring shelf pegs line up by measuring them down from the top and marking the centres. Note: Our shelf is cut to 350mm long. The shelf pegs are 250mm from the top. The left peg is 100mm from the edge and the centres are 200mm apart. Fit a drill with a 30mm hole saw and arbor, centre the arbor on each peg mark to drill halfway through all the holes from the front. Turn the plywood to complete drilling the holes from the back. Tip: Drilling from both sides helps prevent timber breakout and the cores from wedging in the hole saw. Use a handsaw with a mitre box to cut five dowel pegs to 75mm long and two to 150mm long for the shelves. Using 180-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block, smooth over the front of the plywood and around the end of the dowel pieces to remove any breakout. On the back of the plywood, apply gaffer tape over the holes to prevent pegs from pushing
through. Check each peg fits into the hole before dabbing timber adhesive around the base and tapping into the hole with a rubber mallet. Use a T-square to check the peg is straight, wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth and leave to dry. Tip: If the peg doesn’t fit, sand around the base and inside the hole until it taps in snugly. Position the shelf on the pegs to mark the plywood just above pegs. Measure 10mm down from these marks to drill pilot holes through the panel using a 3mm bit. Apply adhesive along the back of the shelf, position it evenly over and against the pegs and leave to dry. Secure the shelf from the back of the plywood using 40mm screws. At the corners of the plywood, use a 3mm bit to drill pilot holes into the corners 30mm from both edges. Enlist a second pair of hands to position the plywood against the wall, resting on the skirting board, and mark the wall through the pilot holes. Attach the plywood to the wall with 50mm screws, using anchors appropriate for the wall type. }

Working on the drop sheet, smooth the timber frame with 120-grit abrasive paper and wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Mask around mirror with tape, close to the frame. Apply primer over the frame’s front and sides with a mini roller. Let dry for at least an hour.
2
Position sheets of white tiles around the frame, with the straight edges running down the long sides of the frame, using a utility knife to cut the mesh from the back. Position single black tiles in circular patterns, counting the tiles between them for an even pattern. Remove the single white tiles underneath and replace them with black, keeping the mesh intact.
3
To cut the protruding tiles, run tape inside the cut lines. Use tile nippers to snip one tile at a time, working around the inside and outside edges. Tip: Position the blade of the nippers straight against the tape but slightly to the side, and use two hands to squeeze the handles, keeping the offcuts to replace any mis-cut tiles.

Wipe the tiled surface with a damp sponge, regularly rinsing the sponge in clean water, wringing it dry, then repeating to remove all the grout from the face of the tiles. Leave for 30 minutes, then buff the tiles with a dry cloth and leave the grout to cure for 48 hours.
8
To seal the grout, wipe the surface with tile cleaner and a clean cloth. Leave the surface to dry before applying grout sealer with a mini roller, applying the second coat before the first is dry. Leave it to dry for 15 minutes, then wipe away excess with a cloth.
9
Working on one side at a time, use a hacksaw to cut pieces of aluminium flat bar to fit around the
inside of the frame and around the outside, using tape to hold it in place. Remove the tape to apply a bead of construction adhesive along the back of each strip, positioning it before repeating with the next. Tip: Buy flat bar in the width to suit your mirror – we used 10mm for the inside and 32mm around the outside.
10
To finish, use tape to hold the aluminium corners while they dry. Apply acrylic sealer inside the aluminium frames to fill the gaps around the tiles, then dab a finger in water and run it over the sealer to remove the excess. Wipe the tiles with a clean, damp cloth and leave to cure overnight. Polish the aluminium frame and mirror using glass cleaner with a clean cloth. ◆

Chalk it up Create a truly unique look with easy-to-use, chalk finish paint
C
halk finish paint could be the answer to your uninspiring furniture woes. It has enhanced adhesion and coverage qualities, which means most timber surfaces need minimal prep and often no primer (for best results, always check the paint label for full instructions). Enjoy the ultra matt, velvety finish just the way it is, or use abrasive paper to sand away small areas of the topcoat for a lightly distressed effect that’s chic, and not at all shabby!

EXPERT TIP Use a good-quality brush, and if you tend to get better at painting the more you do it, save the top and front surfaces of the piece until last!
Apply your chosen base coat with a brush using long strokes. Leave it to dry, apply a second coat and leave to dry thoroughly. Lightly smooth over painted surfaces with 240-grit abrasive paper and a sanding block, then wipe away dust with a damp cloth.
To create a distressed effect, smooth over the painted surfaces with 240-grit sandpaper and a hand sanding block, focusing on areas where natural wear and tear would occur, such as along the edges of the legs, around the top and the drawer fronts.
Use a clean brush to apply an even coat of your chosen top coat over the already painted surfaces, and leave to dry thoroughly. Tip: Begin each coat by turning the piece upside down to paint the legs, then flip it upright to do the sides and top.
Wipe all over with a damp cloth to remove dust. For an ultra-durable finish, apply a protective topcoat recommended by the paint manufacturer. Reassemble the piece, refitting the existing hardware or installing new for a full transformation. ◆

Plant pick
Berry bonanza Utterly delicious, fresh berries are a wonderful addition to your backyard bounty Mulberry Red-black berries cover this handsome tree in summer. Mulberries can grow into large specimens – up to 20m – but can be pruned to your desired size, or seek out smaller varieties in store. There is also an attractive weeping version. It grows in most climates except the tropics, planted in full sun and well-drained soil enriched with compost and organic matter. Blueberry A medium-sized shrub with white or blush-pink, bell-shaped flowers, which give way to waxy berries in summer. There are varieties to suit most climates – plant in full sun, in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Blueberries grow best in acidic soils – a pH between 4 and 5. Use liquid sulphur to lower soil pH.

Blueberry
(Vaccinium spp.)
The best time to prune this deciduous tree is in winter, followed by a feed with complete fertiliser.
Grow in containers using a camellia and azalea potting mix, and feed with a high-potassium fertiliser in spring.
Raspberry
Strawberry
Strawberry This popular berry grows well in all climates, although it needs protection from hot afternoon sun in warmer areas. Dig in compost and organic matter before planting, sow seeds or punnets, and mulch well with organic mulch to help keep berries off the ground. Prune back hard once fruiting has finished. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Raspberry Delicate red berries perch along this shrub’s canes, which can reach 2m so need a sturdy trellis. Plant in full sun in soil enriched with organic matter, and extend the harvest with both summerand autumn-fruiting varieties. Feed with complete fertiliser in early spring and water well during the fruiting season.
