A word from our editor
Usually, by this time of the year, I’d be pretty organised (in my head at least!) about the holidays. This time, not so much – who’ll be with us on the day, even where we’ll be celebrating are still a bit up in the air! Whatever we do, I’ll be pinching ideas from our Christmas shoot (page 21). We’re bringing you lots of inspiration for decorating, tree-trimming and entertaining for a fab homemade holiday. Merry Christmas!

A summer without a barbecue isn’t a summer at all! Here are five cookers that will have you ready for an impromptu grilled lunch this weekend
Colour scheming If you’re redecorating and need some colour inspiration, have a look at British Paints’ Virtual Colour Assistant, which aims to make the process much smoother. “Simply respond to a few questions – such as whether you’re looking for colour, white, grey or neutral paint – then pick a few favourite shades,” explains Bonnie Jenkinson, British Paints senior brand manager. “From here, British Paints will provide you with some tailored, on-trend colour options for your project.”

This month in the garden Tick off this to-do list for tiptop outdoor areas. For more on what to do in the garden during December, go to bunnings.com.au/garden-diaries Promote lush growth on your indoor plants by feeding with a fast-acting indoor plant fertiliser once every two weeks. While you’re there, check for signs of pests and control as required.
Try a Christmas tree alternative, like woolly bush (Adenanthos sericeus), lilly pilly (Syzygium ‘Bush Christmas’), or pygmy cypress pine (Callistris oblonga). Once the festive season is over, plant it in the garden. It’s not too late to sow a second crop of vegies: tomatoes, cucumber, zucchini, bean and eggplant. Feed regularly with a liquid vegie fertiliser.

wipe around the top and lid with a cloth. Leave the bin, with the lid open, in a sunny place to dry thoroughly.

Quick tips
Give the handle and lid a weekly wipe with a barbecue wipe – the cleaning nodules easily remove grime. Park your bins in the shade to keep them cool and slow decomposition, which creates the stinky smell. If you have a mixed recycling bin, put cardboard in it first to help absorb liquids and the noise of clanking bottles. Don’t try to fix a council bin yourself as the standards, sizes and colour codes vary. For a broken wheel or split lid, get in touch with your local council to book a replacement.

“We love the finished home. It’s part Hamptons, part Australian, but most importantly it’s all ours” Catherine, homeowner
GREAT OUTDOORS
Instant Hamptons Imagination and a good serve of James HardieTM products have taken this home from boring brick to American dream
C
hannelling American East Coast style was key to turning a dull house into one family’s dream home. “We wanted to capture the coastal glamour, openness and indoor-outdoor lifestyle of the Hamptons,” says homeowner Catherine.
UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS The dated brick exterior was rendered and painted a contemporary grey, but the second storey extension is what gives the home that chic Hamptons look. The elegant addition was made easier with the use of premium fibre cement LineaTM weatherboards; as it is lighter than brick, it allows for upward extensions without the cost of structural support for masonry. Contrast was created with an abundance of white
trim, including on window frames edged with James Hardie’s AxentTM trims.
BUILT TO LAST The family needed their materials to be practical. “In the Hamptons they use timber weatherboards or shingles that grey and deteriorate. We wanted weatherboards that are more durable for the Aussie elements,” says builder Damien Mitchell of DF Hoult Constructions. “The Linea weatherboards give us that same textured shadow-line look we wanted, plus they are lower maintenance than traditional materials, so less work for us in the long run.” Linea weatherboards are also resistant to damage from termites, fire and moisture.
A strong connection with the outdoors is a key element of both Hamptons and Australian style. Doubling the size of the existing rear balcony, the deck has been cantilevered out beyond the roof of the basement garage. Floored in HardieDeckTM, this has created room for an outdoor kitchen area and full living and dining set up. HardieDeck also helps to create continuity between the interior and exterior by mimicking the flooring in the indoor living area. The beautiful vaulted ceiling is lined in HardieGrooveTM. “The covered outdoor room is a must to make the Hamptons look work under our harsh summer sun. It also created an opportunity to add more of the layered detail you see in New York holiday homes,” says Catherine.

Keep torches easily accessible in case of blackouts

See the light
Illuminate a camping adventure with a long-lasting lantern
Don’t let a lack of light throw you off your game. Own the dark with Energizer torches and batteries
W
e tend to take illumination for granted, with light available at the flick of a switch. But when an emergency strikes, having torches and batteries to hand means the difference between fumbling vulnerably in the dark or being calm, capable and in command.
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Emergencies – from the inconvenient to the catastrophic – are a fact of life, but when the unexpected happens, it helps immeasurably if you can see what you’re doing! Pack a good torch in the car in case of a breakdown, or make this an easily accessible item in your emergency kit in case of a storm, bushfire or other natural disaster. A tough, waterproof torch, like the Eveready Dolphin, is a good choice, so whether you’re battling rain or even floodwaters, you’ll be able to see the safest path for you and your family.

torches around the house – next to the bed, in a kitchen drawer, and anywhere else you might need light – and stock up on good quality Energizer batteries as back up in case the lights stay off for longer than hoped.
CAMP SIGHT Being without power isn’t all bad, and those family camping trips with basic facilities are priceless. But while it’s nice to see the stars, a dark night is less fun if you’re tripping over guy ropes. Bring a torch or two for trips to the facilities, and include an Energizer folding lantern on your must-pack list; this ingenious
lantern has three settings: strong illumination, an ambient glow or a warm amber nightlight to leave on all night.
LIGHT WORK Whether you’re a professional tradie or a savvy DIYer, it’s important to have a good source of light to work by to help avoid accidents; it’s the most essential piece of safety equipment! O N T HE B AR BECUE Chipotle barbecue chicken kebabs Makes 12 1.5kg chicken breast fillets (see Tip) 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp onion powder Oil, for barbecuing Lemon wedges, to serve
Recipes Kerrie Worner. Photography Brigid Arnott, styling Tilly Roberts, styling assistants Sam Pointon and Amanda Ghalaini
Chipotle barbecue sauce ¼ cup tomato sauce 2 tbsp hickory and brown sugar barbecue sauce (see Tip) 2 tbsp olive oil 1½ tbsp apple cider vinegar 2 tsp chipotle sauce (see Tip) 1 Cut chicken into 2cm pieces and put in a bowl. Add garlic and onion powder. Season to taste. Stir until combined. 2 To make the sauce, combine all ingredients in a bowl. Add chicken and stir until combined. The chicken can be marinated in the fridge for up to two hours at this point. 3 Soak 12 x 25cm-long wooden skewers in water for 10 minutes. Thread chicken onto skewers, and discard any remaining marinade. 4 Preheat a barbecue plate over a medium heat. Drizzle chicken skewers with oil and place on barbecue. Cook for 10-12 minutes with lid down, turning occasionally, until cooked through. 5 Serve kebabs with lemon wedges. Tip: If you tend to overcook your meat, use chicken thigh fillets, which can sustain longer cooking times and remain tender. We used Sweet Baby Ray’s hickory and brown sugar barbecue sauce, but you can use regular barbecue sauce. Chipotle sauce can be found at the supermarket; you can also use chipotle tabasco.
Grilled steak platter with horseradish and Dijon dressing
Horseradish and Dijon dressing ⅓ cup olive oil 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tbsp prepared horseradish (see Tip) 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp caster sugar 2 tbsp water
2 Soak 12 x 16cm wooden skewers in water for 10 minutes. Thread 4-5 tomatoes on each skewer. 3 To make the dressing, whisk all the ingredients in a jug until smooth. 4 Preheat an oiled barbecue plate to a medium to high heat. Add bread. Cook for about 3 minutes each side or until lightly charred. Remove and set aside. 5 Add asparagus and tomatoes to barbecue. Drizzle with a little of the remaining thyme oil. Cook for 3 minutes, turning until just beginning to soften and char. Remove both and set aside. 6 Add steak to barbecue plate. Cook for about 4 minutes each side, with lid down for medium or cook 1 minute longer for medium to well. Remove and rest for 3 minutes. 7 Slice steaks. Arrange asparagus on a serving platter with tomato skewers and grilled bread. Arrange meat slices in the centre. Drizzle dressing over the top of meat. Sprinkle with basil leaves and serve.
1 Combine oil, garlic and thyme. Brush both sides of ciabatta or sourdough with oil mixture and place on a tray. Coat steaks in some of the remaining oil until coated and place on a tray. Season with salt and pepper.
Tip: Prepared horseradish is a ready-made horseradish paste that is found in greengrocers and larger supermarkets in the international section. You can use creamed horseradish, but reduce the Dijon by half.
Grilled steak platter with horseradish and Dijon dressing Serves 6-8 ½ cup olive oil 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp chopped thyme 12 x 1cm-thick slices sourdough or ciabatta 4 (1.2kg) thick-cut New York steaks 2 x 200g punnet cherry tomatoes 3 bunches asparagus, ends trimmed Basil leaves, to serve

Harissa yoghurt 200ml Greek yoghurt 2 tbsp garlic dip (see Tip) 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp lemon juice 1 tbsp harissa paste (see Tip) 1 Place mushrooms, zucchini and capsicum in a large bowl. Thread a mushroom, a piece of zucchini and a piece of capsicum onto a long metal skewer. Repeat this combination two more times to fill skewer. Repeat to make 12 skewers in total. Place on a tray and brush liberally with oil. Sprinkle with za’atar. 2 Preheat an oiled barbecue plate over a medium heat. Add pita breads and cook for 1 minute each side or until crisp. Remove and set aside. 3 Place kebabs on barbecue. Cook, with lid down, turning occasionally for about 13-15 minutes or until vegetables are tender. 4 To make harissa yoghurt, whisk all the ingredients with a fork in a bowl. 5 Break pita into large pieces and place at one end of a serving platter. Arrange kebabs on platter. Drizzle with yoghurt mixture. Tip: Za’atar can be found in the herbs section of major supermarkets. Harissa paste is found in the hot sauce section of major supermarkets. Garlic dip is readily available in supermarkets. To make this recipe suitable for vegans, use a non-dairy yoghurt, such as coconut, soy or cashew, and check the label on the garlic dip. Raspberry and pistachio ice cream
SOMETHING SWEET Raspberry and pistachio ice cream Serves 10-12 500g frozen raspberries, thawed ¼ cup icing sugar mixture 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 x 2-litre tubs vanilla ice cream 200g pistachio amaretti biscuits (see Tip) ⅓ cup (50g) pistachios, roughly chopped 3 drops green food colouring (optional)* Fresh raspberries, to serve 1 Grease and line all sides of a 23cm x 14.5 cm x 9cm-deep straight-sided loaf pan with baking paper, allowing paper to overhang by 10cm. 2 Process raspberries, icing sugar and vanilla extract in a food processor until smooth. Rest a big coarse sieve over a big bowl. Press raspberry puree through it to remove seeds. Discard seeds. 3 Allow one of the 2-litre tubs of ice cream to soften out of the fridge for about 20 minutes or until softened but not melted. Spoon into a bowl and mix with a wooden spoon to loosen. Add raspberry puree and beat on low with a handheld electric mixer until smooth and rippled in appearance. Spoon into prepared pan. Spread up the sides and make a cavity in the centre. 4 Place in the freezer for 3 hours to firm up
until it is possible to spread three quarters of the way up the sides to the top and make the cavity more defined. Cover with overhanging baking paper and return to freezer for 3 hours or overnight until firm. 5 Scoop two-thirds of ice cream from the other 2-litre tub. Return remaining ice cream to the freezer for another use. Allow ice cream in bowl to soften for 15 minutes. Coarsely chop 100g of the amaretti. Beat ice cream with a wooden spoon until smooth. Add pistachios, chopped amaretti and colouring, and stir until combined and tinted. 6 Spoon into cavity and across the top to fill the pan. Slice remaining amaretti and place on top of pistachio ice cream, pushing the slices into the ice cream. Cover with overlapping baking paper and freeze overnight. 7 To serve, stand for 10 minutes before using paper to help remove from pan and invert onto a serving platter. Decorate with fresh raspberries. Cut into slices to serve. Tip: Pistachio amaretti biscuits are available in greengrocers where continental products are sold. You can use almond amaretti biscuits if you cannot get pistachio or, if you prefer, substitute biscuits with 50g soft nougat. ◆

Lift the colour quota Vibrant annuals will add plenty of cheer. “Petunias, marigolds, annual vincas and impatiens are great options that will provide pretty flowers throughout summer – just ensure you keep the water up,” says Katy.
6
Scrub away Arm yourself with a high-pressure cleaner to strip away dirt and mould from pathways, driveways and retaining walls. Give outdoor furniture a wash and gentle scrub with detergent to remove any stubborn stains.
7
Invest in shade protection It might be as simple as a market umbrella or a shade cloth to shield an outdoor table, or a marquee you can put up and move around as required. For a longer lasting solution, try a DIY gazebo kit.
1
Refresh the entrance Clear up around your entryway and soften the space with a generously sized pot plant, or a pair of potted topiary trees.

Tidy garden beds For an instant lift, add mulch. “Spread pine bark 5-8 cm deep, keeping it away from stems to avoid rotting and disease,” says Katy Schreuder, Bunnings Greenlife buyer. “Not only will this make plants pop, it helps garden beds retain moisture.” Rockeries and pebbled paths will also benefit from a stone top up.

Add some pots For a cohesive look, choose one style of planter in various sizes or, for a more eclectic feel, try complementary textural finishes and shapes. “Group structural plants, such as succulents like aloes and echeverias, together,” says Katy. “For a cottage feel, fuchsias, geraniums, lavender and salvias work well together.”

Water well Keep things lush with an irrigation or sprinkler system, but check first with your local authority regarding water restrictions. Plan it Multipurpose zone
T
hese holidays, as you whip the spare room into shape for guests, consider giving it a twice-over and creating a space that you can use all year round. Once guests have gone, your spare room could become a home study, somewhere to hit your New Year’s fitness resolutions, or even an extra play area for the kids. Here’s how to create a multipurpose space for a fully functional home. Oversized plants can help to enhance the divide between relaxation and work in a shared zone
THE BASICS
The versatile Flexi Storage Clever Cube system can be tailored to your needs
For any multitasking space, you need multitasking furniture, especially if your spare room is on the small side – who wants to climb over a bed to get to your desk or yoga mat? A good, comfy sofa bed gives a room-neutral vibe when not in use. “Buy the best quality you can afford to ensure your guests are as comfy as possible,” says Kristy Withers, founder of Incy Interiors (incyinteriors.com.au).
Low-pile carpet and rugs provide a good base for just about any use: great to even out the acoustics for Zoom meetings and a soft surface for floorbased warm-ups or playtime. Hardworking storage is an essential; ensure yours meets your needs, whether it be for stationery, resistance bands or toys. The secret to an uncluttered look is hiding away paraphernalia – this could be as simple as a Clever Cube
with colour-coded inserts for different items. For the ultimate in disguise, consider adding a built-in wardrobe with hanging space, shelving and drawers, with the aim to leave some room for guests to stow their stuff when they visit. General lighting is fine for most purposes, but to make it more appealing when it turns back into a guestroom, go for decorative lighting over plain downlights. Pretty wall sconces look lovely – place them either side of a mirror for putting on make-up, or bookending the sofa bed to serve as reading lights. Or make a statement with a gorgeous pendant; ask in store about replacement light installation‡. Keep the room’s multiple functions in mind when choosing window furnishings. Minimal coverings might do the trick for reducing glare on screens or filtering light for a calm meditation zone, but bear in mind the needs of a sleep space too. Shutters are great for versatility – tilt them for more or less light and privacy, as needed – or pair light-filtering sheers with block-out blinds. }

When your study is also your guestroom, an ergonomic chair will suit visitors who like to sit properly to use a laptop, write letters or fill in a journal. Task lighting is essential for a desk area, but for a softer effect, choose a pretty lamp with a warmer glow, instead of a purely utilitarian white light. When guests arrive, leave it where it is to turn the desk into a dressing table, or move to the bedside for reading. }

With more of us working remotely, magazines and social media feeds are flooded with home office inspiration. But how do you create a stylish study that effortlessly transforms into a welcoming guest’s retreat? “Create a built-in desk using floating shelves for a space-saving office alternative that can be styled with books and plants to create an attractive guestroom feature,” says DIY expert Geneva Vanderzeil, founder of Collective Gen (collectivegen. com). Add a decorative mirror to amp up the room’s usefulness and ambience, and to tone down the ‘office’ feel. bunnings.com.au |

“You also need to ensure the colours you use will help in a study setting,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux colour and communications manager. “Use colour to help stimulate creativity and thinking – uplifting colours such as orange and red can work in this setting, even in a muted way,” she says. Try spicy terracotta hues like Dulux Gold Pheasant or Hot Chillie. “Paint behind your desk on one wall to make a feature and add deeper tones of teal, blue and green for accents in bedlinen to balance the warmth in the space,” suggests Andrea.

A dedicated space for exercise and meditation is a true luxury, and once the craziness of the festive season has passed, it’s the perfect time to put self-care centrestage. For high-intensity trainers and cardio lovers, you’ll need flooring that’s sweat-resistant – try vinyl or invest in interlocking foam tiles that you can stack away when not in use. Where possible, choose compact gym equipment or smaller, multipurpose pieces that can be easily hidden away. When it comes to decor, home gyms are often neglected – this shouldn’t be the case if the room is doubling as accommodation. “Go for something more calming and cooler,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr. “Try a subtle blue, green or grey in a lighter to mid-tone hue for that soothing feel. Cooler tones are generally better for a relaxed environment, even if you would like to use cooler neutrals.” bunnings.com.au |

C H I L D ’ S P L AY Turning your sometimes-guestroom into a playroom for the kids has a long list of benefits, confining their mess (or most of it) to a single room of the house and teaching them a little about responsibility along the way. It’s also a place you can enjoy decorating, while still keeping it suitable for visitors. “To add some fun, you can’t go past some stronger colour for a little playfulness. If you only want a small volume of colour, use the wall behind the bed as a feature,” suggests Andrea. “If it’s a darker space, try warmer colours such as yellows, oranges and muted reds/corals. You can also use stronger, bolder blues, greens and teals, especially if it’s facing a warmer aspect such as north or west.” You could also try painting shelving or kids’ furniture in eye-catching hues – freestanding furnishings can always be moved out later if they’re too loud for a sleep space. To encourage order, drawers or labelled storage boxes tucked in a wardrobe or cupboard are best for hiding and organising toys and games. ◆

lanning to cook up a storm, accommodate family, or simply want to create a feel-good holiday vibe at home? It’s worth putting in a little effort so your kitchen and bathroom function effortlessly and look fabulous. We’ve created a checklist of jobs you can knock off in your spare time, whether you have a couple of hours, half a day or a whole weekend to work with.
KITCHEN

Declutter Rehome items that don’t belong in the kitchen, says professional organiser Robyn Amott of Bless This Mess (blessthismess.com.au). “To prevent items creeping back in, create suitable storage zones outside of the kitchen, so everything has a designated home,” she says. If benches are laden with appliances, clear out

a cupboard where they can be kept. “To free up space, donate gadgets or specialty appliances you haven’t used in years, and eliminate double-up utensils, mismatched crockery and lidless containers,” adds Robyn. Oven If you love holiday baking, Rowena Jongejan of Family Clean (familyclean.com. au), suggests giving your oven a spruce up: “Start by removing and soaking oven racks and trays in an earth-friendly dishwashing detergent. Mix bicarb soda with water to form a paste and apply it liberally inside the oven. Scrub with a sponge and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then spray a 50/50 white vinegar and water

solution over the paste to lift stubborn grime.” Wipe off with a clean damp cloth, rinsing frequently, until all paste and spray has been removed. Servingware Dig out serving platters, glassware and cutlery and give them a good wash. Also check napery, which may need a wash and iron. }

Fridge fix Have a clear out of your fridge and freezer. “Take out all the perishable items and food storage containers to give shelves a thorough wipe with a microfibre cloth and a 50/50 water and vinegar solution,” says Rowena Jongejan. Dispose of items past their prime and

create sections for things like dairy, produce and condiments so you can keep track of what you have. Pantry purge Do a pantry stocktake, says Robyn Amott. “Check expiration dates, group like with like, corral hard-to-
tame items in acrylic containers and store dry foods in airtight containers,” she suggests. “This will maximise storage space and help preserve food longer.” If possible, add extra shelving and consider relocating spices and oils to a cupboard closer to the cooktop.

Address drains To eliminate odours and avoid blockages, use an off-the-shelf drain cleaner, or for a DIY solution Rowena Jongejan proposes pouring boiling water followed by a cup of baking soda down drains. “To cut through grease, follow with a cup of vinegar and another cup of boiling water,” she says. Toilet tactics Gloving up and removing the toilet seat and lid with a screwdriver is the best way to get into all the nooks and crannies with disinfectant. Follow with a thorough wipe over and pop in a freshener.
Vanity fix Organise vanity drawers and cupboards. Ditch products past their use-by date and use clear pullout containers and drawer inserts to group like items. “This will help keep everything organised and, with dividers, you can allocate storage space for stay-over guests,” says Robyn Amott.
Fresh towels Excess laundry detergent can have a stiffening effect on towels. To bring back luxurious softness, Rowena suggests washing towels on a warm water cycle with a quarter cup of vinegar and a few drops of an essential oil for a lovely fragrance.
Revive grout There are several ways to tackle lacklustre grout. For gaps and chips, use a product like Davco rejuvenation grout to fill the cracks. To transform stained grout, try Dunlop grout paint, or use a White Knight grout pen for touch-ups. }

ll ceiling fans are essentially the same, right? Wrong. A good fan will not only deliver superior cooling, but will also be a design asset, boast whisper-quiet operation – no unnerving rattle! – and could even save on energy costs. Here’s what to look out for before making your fan purchase.
Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.
SMOOTH OPERATOR Your new fan should be pretty enough for you to happily gaze at every day. The sleek design of the HPM Inspire fan fits the bill, with a simple, contemporary look that will sit comfortably in any home. Choose an Inspire fan in white to blend in, or go for a contrasting finish like black or brushed silver for eye-catching good looks.
QUIET TIME If you’re a light sleeper or need a quiet space, a noisy fan will be your worst nightmare. Look for an ultra quiet model, like the HPM Inspire, which features a perfectly balanced system and corrosion-resistant timber blades for near silent operation.
ENERGY WISE As an appliance likely to be in frequent use, you want a fan that delivers the coolness you crave without burning through electricity. HPM Inspire fans feature a powerful 50W motor that delivers higher airflow (max 9830m3/h), while consuming less energy than other fans. Plus, Inspire fans feature summer and winter mode; switch it to winter mode in the cooler months and it will circulate warm air, boosting the efficiency of your heating appliances to help reduce your energy bill.
LIGHT BULB MOMENT The role of a ceiling fan is fairly straightforward – spin fast, keep the room cool – but a fan with a light can be a savvy purchase for certain spaces. An integrated light avoids the strobelight effect of blades sweeping under downlights and is ideally suited to smaller rooms where you don’t want the visual clutter of separate light fittings. The Inspire sweep fan has the option of an integrated LED light for a cleaner, more minimalist look.

taying comfortably fresh during the hottest months of the year is a challenge. Even if your home is well insulated, electricity bills for air conditioning can really add up. Luckily, there are plenty of low-cost and no-cost strategies to take the edge off high temperatures in the home and get the most out of your cooling appliances.
Breeze along The coolest part of the day is about 30 to 60 minutes after sunrise, so keep your windows open to let in natural breezes as much as possible during the night and until about an hour after sunrise. Then it’s time to close up, extend the awnings and
draw the blinds for most of the day. “In the evening, or when the cool change hits, open your doors and windows to let the heat escape and the cool breeze in,” says Ben Cirulis of the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. Pay attention to the direction of prevailing winds, opening windows on that side of the house when the breeze blows but also on the opposite side of the house. This will encourage maximum air movement, pulling hot air out of the building and circulating fresh, cool air.
Made in the shade The majority of heat is likely to enter your home through glazing, but effective shade solutions can cut up to 90 per cent of the heat transmitted by direct sunlight*. When deciding on the location of shade sails and fixed structures – such as a pergola – to provide shade, position these features so they don’t obstruct sunlight late in the day when the sun is closer to the horizon. Outdoor blinds and retractable awnings can provide shade when required, while letting in full sun during cooler times. }
“The best way to reduce heat gain via windows is to shade the window from the outside to stop sunlight getting in” Ben Cirulis NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment

“A close-fitting, insulating window treatment like cellular or block-out blinds and heavy curtains on the inside of the window is also a good idea, and can help keep warmth inside during winter,” says Ben Cirulis. “Consider a pelmet too, to help reduce air movement behind the curtain.” Fan fare Make sure your ceiling fans aren’t in ‘winter’ mode when the hot weather kicks in! “In ‘winter’ mode, the fan blows air upwards to help circulate warmer air that has risen in the room,” explains Tanya Gatti of Arlec. “In ‘summer’ mode, a ceiling fan bunnings.com.au |

A new leaf Greenery around your home does more than just look pretty. “Water enters the air through transpiration from vegetation, and evaporation from the ground and water bodies. This combined process is called evapotranspiration,” says Karen Player of Australian Environmental Education. “By planting trees and other vegetation, you can lower surface and air temperatures by providing shade, as well as cooling through evapotranspiration.” Don’t forget your indoor greenery. “Research has shown that indoor plants can also help inside your home as they lose water through transpiration, which cools the air around them,” says Karen. nsulation works wonders at shielding our homes from winter’s frigid bite, but did you know it’s just as effective against the scorching heat of summer? When it comes to battling the elements, insulation is a major tool in your arsenal, keeping your home comfortable when the outdoors is anything but.
COOL CUSTOMER Good quality insulation, like Earthwool®, helps your home retain an even temperature, working as a barrier against the heat of summer as well as sealing it against winter chills. Think of it as being like a force field around your home, keeping you comfortable within, even when the mercury rises. Earthwool® insulation can also save you money, significantly cutting the amount of energy you pour into running both heating and cooling appliances.
SPOILT FOR CHOICE Choosing the right insulation might seem bewildering, but it’s really very simple; every package of bulk insulation is clearly labelled with an R value, which indicates the thermal resistance of the
insulation – essentially, the higher the R value the better! Those in warmer climates might find a lower R value is perfectly adequate to keep their home warm in winter, but there’s no harm in sizing up, so to speak. Earthwool® makes life even easier by colour-coding their packs of insulation; green is for ceilings, black for underfloor, and blue is for walls – great for temperature regulation but also for acoustics, an absolute boon if you’ve got bedrooms bordering living spaces. Plus, Earthwool® is backed by a 50 year warranty, so you can be extra confident in your selection.
Earthwool® is made using recycled glass and ECOSE® Technology, a sustainable plant-based binder that contains no added formaldehyde, so you can handle it with confidence.

Cabot’s New Timber Prep lets you enjoy your new deck sooner
Question time
Cabot’s Aquadeck protects timber from the elements
Not sure what to do next or whether you might be missing a step? Cabot’s Project Assistant is your handy helper on the job. Find answers to all the most common questions, or message the Cabot’s Project Support Crew. Scan the QR code below for instant advice.
Finish in a flash Getting your brand-new deck ready for summer living is easier and faster than ever, with Cabot’s
A
new deck brings the warmth of timber to your backyard, giving the landscape a focal point, and evoking visions of the lazy Sunday afternoons you’ll spend on it. But in between laying the deck and finishing it, there can be weeks of waiting for the tannins and oils to leach out of the timber so that your finish goes on smoothly and looks professional. Knowing when your deck is weathered completely is also an inexact science – get it wrong and your finish will be patchy. But with Cabot’s, you can skip the guesswork, weathering and finishing your deck in just one day! Here’s how:
scrub the surface with Cabot’s Deck Prep brush. Rinse off using a pressure washer or garden hose.
STEP 2: CLEAN SURFACE While the timber is still damp, clean with Cabot’s Deck Clean. Dilute one part Deck Clean to four parts water and use the Deck Prep brush to clean off any residual dirt. Leave the solution on the timber for 20 minutes, then rinse. Allow to dry – use the squeegee on the back of the Cabot’s Deck Prep brush to help speed up the process.
STEP 3: FINISH WITH THE FINISH Now to bring your deck to life! Stir the can of Cabot’s Aquadeck to evenly distribute the colour. Use a brush to cut in around the edges, then use the Cabot’s Deck Coat applicator to apply Aquadeck to the boards. Work methodically, coating three or four boards at a time along their full length, so you don’t end up with patchy joins in the middle. Let it dry – this should take about an hour – then apply a second coat. A third coat is a good idea for added protection, especially around pools or if your deck will be blasted by the sun.
STEP 1: INSTANT WEATHERING Hose down the deck, then apply undiluted Cabot’s New Timber Prep to the wet boards, using a scrubbing broom. This draws out the tannins and oils, doing in just minutes what would normally take weeks of exposure to the elements. Leave for 15 minutes, then

The water’s fine Get your swim space ready for a summer workout with these maintenance tips
A
h, summer – the season of long hot days, when all you want to do is to jump in the pool. But is your pool ready for you? “Safety is the first thing you need to consider,” says Spiros Dassakis of the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Australia (SPASA Australia). It’s essential that your pool fencing and gates comply with local laws and standards. These may vary, so if your pool and/or spa has not been inspected by a swimming pool inspector, the best option is to check the websites of SPASA Australia, your state or territory government or your local council for pool safety checklists to ensure your fencing and gates are compliant. “Also ensure your pool water and surrounds are in tip-top condition,” adds Spiros.

PRO TIP If using a pressure washer to clean your pavers, “Use a fan spray and wet the surface first with water and a neutral cleaner. With cleaners, always use a mild solution and increase strength only if required,” says Roscoe McFetrich of Tile Art. Don’t use a turbo head or pinprick as this may damage the pavers

Pool tiles Cracked or missing tiles in or around your pool look unsightly, may cause injury and can undermine your pool’s structural integrity. Cracked tiles can also indicate more serious damage, for example to pool surrounds or foundations. Seek professional advice if you notice cracks or water loss in your concrete or fibreglass pool. “Check also for staining, eroded grout, loose tiles or pebblecrete-type surface delamination or deterioration,” says Spiros Dassakis. If you need to replace some tiles, you don’t need to drain your pool or lower the water level. SPASA Australia advises not emptying your pool without bunnings

Pavers and decking Dirty and stained pavers can look unsightly. “It’s important to clean them often to keep the mould and other nasties away,” says tile and stone maintenance specialist Roscoe McFetrich of Tile Art. Avoid using chlorine or bleach as they can remove or lighten the colour in some stone, he warns. “Simply wash with a nylon scouring pad, a quality neutral cleaner and water and then rinse off.” Most pavers should be resealed annually. “Use a quality penetrating sealer to protect the stone and grout from both oil- and water-borne contaminants,” says Roscoe. “Salt and chlorine can erode the stone, plus sealing it also makes the grout far more resilient.” If you have decking, use a dedicated deck cleaning product according to the directions to remove any mould or grime. Leave as is for an aged look, or apply a stain or oil to rejuvenate the timber. Sand it back (an orbital deck sander from the Hire Shop will make short work of the task) then apply oil or stain with a woodcare brush and lambswool applicator.
expert advice, as this can cause irreversible structural damage to the pool, its interior, surrounds and associated equipment. Instead, leave the water level as is and use a product like Selleys Marine Flex, which can be applied to wet surfaces and under water if necessary. “First ensure tiles are clean of oil, grease, dirt or dust,” says Damian Kirchmajer from Selleys help and advice team. “Then apply the sealant to the back of the tile, position in place and press firmly.” Problem plants Don’t plant large trees around your pool. A tree overhanging it can be climbed by children and is dangerous. Dropping leaves can also affect water quality and make extra work. “Any plants within a pool area must be nonclimbable and kept pruned low,” says Matt Lainson of Cronulla
Pools (cronullapools.com). “If you have trees causing issues, cut them back and consider a pool cover.” Water balance “Having the right water balance is crucial to your health and the longevity of your pool,” says Spiros. To keep pool water safe and crystal clear, use a sanitiser such as chlorine, and appropriate filtration to remove contaminants. Use test strips or liquid kits to test water regularly, and have the pool/spa water tested professionally, by taking a sample to a service which can track and record your pool’s history and advise what chemicals are required. Or use the free Water Testing Kiosk‡ in store: visit bunnings. com.au/our-services/in-store/ pool-water-testing. ◆
Your pool care checklist
Keep the water in your pool healthy and sparkling with regular summer maintenance ■C heck and clean the skimmer basket weekly at least. ■ Regularly backwash sand-type filters and clean cartridge filters. ■ Check sanitiser levels daily. ■ Check pH every two or three days. ■ Check total alkalinity weekly. ■ Auto-run your filtration system for at least six hours each day (three periods of two hours). ■H ave your pool water tested at least every two to four weeks. ■ Check if your salt-chlorinated pool needs extra salt. ■ Maintain water level at least halfway up the skimmer box opening. ■ Inspect plumbing for leaks. ■ Regularly vacuum pool walls and floor.

hile we love open-plan living, having every corner of the room in plain sight can be a burden, particularly if your lounge area is suddenly doubling as a home office or kids’ study space. Room dividers are a fantastic solution, disguising cluttered corners or carving out a private nook. These two DIY dividers serve as sculptural features in any area, drawing the eye as well as hiding any mess that’s mucking up your minimalist design scheme. }

To make the uprights, from the top of the pine pieces, measure and mark 120mm, 150mm, 1450mm and 1480mm. On these marks, use a combination square to mark the centre, which is 32mm from the edge.
2
Set up a drill press with a 12mm spade bit to make holes through the 120mm and 1480mm marks for the support rails. Change to a 25mm spade bit, set the press to drill 6mm-deep holes at the 150mm and 1450mm marks for the panel rails. Tip: Position an offcut underneath to prevent the spade bit hitting the platform.
3
Using a 3mm bit, drill right through the centre of the 25mm holes. Sand the uprights all over with 180-grit abrasive paper, wipe away the dust with a damp cloth, then use another cloth to apply Danish oil, wiping the oil into the surfaces and end-grain, then leaving to dry.

Position two pairs of uprights with outside faces together. Mark 250mm from the top and 500mm from the base. Position a hinge to separate the uprights by about 4mm to allow for the knuckle, mark the holes and drill pilot holes with a 2mm bit. Position the hinges with knuckles facing out and secure with the supplied screws.
5
Using a mitre saw, cut the 25mm dowel into six 720mm lengths for the panel rails. Cut the 12.5mm dowel into six 780mm lengths for support rails. Sand around the ends, checking they fit in the holes in the uprights. Paint the support rails with a mini roller, applying a primer and two coats of paint in your chosen colours, leaving to dry after each.

2 Position the dowel pieces to form a five point star. Join the points with twine, knotting securely. 3 Starting at one point, begin wrapping the star thickly in the raffia, always working in the same direction for consistency. To finish, tuck the raffia under the wrapping at the back of the star and trim the excess.

P E G STA RS Hot glue gun with glue sticks Craft paintbrush (size 20) Clothes pegs (we used Sunfresh wooden clothes pegs) Paint in two colours (optional; we used Taubmans Peach Cascade and left one star natural) 1 Gently ease apart 20 wooden clothes pegs, removing and discarding the metal hinges. 2 Position the peg halves with the backs together and secure with hot glue, making 10 sets, five for each star. 3 Dab hot glue onto the top of each set, pressing them together to create a star and leaving to dry. 4 Use a brush to paint each star in contrasting colours or leave unpainted. Leave to dry. 5 To make double stars, dab hot glue onto the centre of one star and position on another star, turning so the points are visible.
Rolling pin Ruler C raft knife Barbecue skewer Air dry clay (we used Boyle air drying clay in White) R affia (we used Whites natural raffia) G loss waterbased sealer (we used Mod Podge) 1 Roll the clay into an even 4mm-thick slab with a rolling pin. 2 To make the tags, use a craft knife to cut 100mm x 40mm rectangles, leaving them to dry for half an hour. Tip: Letting the clay dry slightly before cutting makes it easier to work with. 3 On each tag, carve a name with the knife, using a skewer to punch a hole through one end, leaving to dry completely. 4 To make beads, roll a piece of clay into a thin log, flatten it slightly and slice it into 10mm-long pieces, leaving to dry for half an hour. Pierce the centre with a skewer and leave to dry completely. 5 Finish the beads and tags with two coats of sealer, leaving to dry thoroughly after each. 6 Thread a 400mm length of raffia through the holes in the tags, thread both ends through beads and secure with a knot. ◆

Heaven scent These fragrant native plants rival any perfumed exotics Native frangipani It isn’t related to the common frangipani, but you’ll still be hypnotised by the heady scent of this rainforest tree. The cream to yellow flowers appear in spring and summer and cover the tree, inviting pollinating bees, birds and butterflies. It reaches up to 30m in the wild but remains at 5-8m in the garden. A Gold Nugget dwarf form is also available. Wax flower From late winter or early spring, this sweet shrub lights up with a profusion of dainty star-shaped white flowers. They emerge from pink buds at various times during the season, so you often have a gorgeous display of bi-coloured blooms. The leaves provide year-round interest, giving off a citrus scent when crushed.
Native frangipani (Hymenosporum flavum)
Wax flower (Philotheca myoporoides)

Lemon scented myrtle
Lemon scented myrtle Masses of creamy-white flowers adorn this evergreen shrub or small tree in summer. The flowers are lightly perfumed, but the leaves are strongly lemon scented and can be used to flavour tea, oils, baked goods and more. Its dense habit is ideal as a specimen tree, screen or hedge. It likes warm climates, but will grow in cool zones with protection from frost. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Mint bush As the name suggests, this shrub is wonderfully mint-scented and is grown both as an ornamental and a culinary herb. In spring, you will barely notice the leaves – save for the aroma – as it’s covered with small purple flowers. It grows 2-3m tall and wide, and suits cottage or coastal-style plantings.
