WHAT’S HAPPENING IN FEBRUARY News, special buys and things to do

Editor’s letter Welcome!

When my family and I lived in the UK, I was never too fond of February. The excitement of the entertaining season was well over, and the month seemed to struggle to shake off the last of the gloomy afternoons and winter weather. Cue a hemisphere switch and February has virtually the opposite effect on me. I love it as a time of change – the next school year, a return to work and the sense of a new start. In that spirit, we’re sharing all sorts of ways to press refresh, indoors and out, from making your home easy clean and overhauling your garage, to fixing up the lawn and tackling weeds. There’s room for some me-time too, so we also look at transforming your shower into a spa-worthy retreat. Enjoy the issue!

Treat your loved one on this Valentine’s Day with a heavenly perfumed rose or gardenia. Pair it with a decorative pot and a liquid fertiliser to keep the display going.

NIGELLA

Fine, feathery foliage makes the blooms look like stars floating in the mist. Plant in clumps for a dramatic effect. Resist the urge to prune back any sunburnt or damaged foliage after a sizzling heatwave, as there may be more hot days to come. Leaving the foliage on will help protect any tender 3 new growth.

Check azaleas for signs of the dreaded lace bug. The upper sides of the foliage will be silvery, while underneath will be rust-coloured. Spray if sighted.

PANSY

Sow now for a cheery winter display. Flowers are edible – use to decorate cakes or add to salads.

If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

Did your lawn suffer from weedy winter grass last year? Don’t give it a chance this season! Apply a pre-emergent spray at the end of the month.

Bring some cold-season colour to the garden by sowing flower seeds now. See below for ideas on beautiful blooms for pots and beds.
