Welcome to a brand new year, and let’s hope it’s not as challenging as the last one! For me, the post-Christmas break tends to spark plans for an update or two, indoors and out, and these holidays are no different. I’m totally inspired by this issue, especially Lauren’s clever outdoor makeover (p27), which is a tale of triumph over adversity! There’s also a host of DIY projects to check out, but if you’re hitting the road, we hope you find our guide to kit for caravanning or camping invaluable. Enjoy the issue!

After purchasing a Scandi-style sideboard from trusted seller Groove Furniture through Bunnings MarketLink, Cat sanded down and painted the body in Dulux ‘Aquanamel’ semi gloss in White Dune. For an on-trend custom addition, she coated Tasmanian oak half round dowel moulding with satin varnish, and attached seven cut rods to each door using wood glue. Cat’s handy husband modified the leg brackets so the legs stand straight, in line with the dowels.

NEW STRINGS
Revive your washing line with new cord or wire. Follow these tips from James Parkinson of Hills lean the frame. Use a brush to clear cobwebs C and dirt from the line holes in the clothesline. For easy-breezy threading, cut the cord at an angle. Lines cut at a forty-five-degree angle are easier to thread as the ends are pointed. Leave a little slack. Over-tensioning the line should be avoided, as this may cause the plastic coat to stretch and tear around the turn points. Nanoleaf ‘Canvas’ smarter light kit, $349/9 panels, I/N: 0149621
WHICH WHITE IS RIGHT? A fail-safe way to revive a tired room is to paint it white – but how do you choose the right one? We mined the experts for their top tips Know warm from cool Warm white has undertones of yellow, pink or brown, while cool whites have grey, green, blue or purple. “To see the undertones of a white, compare it to a clean white,” says Lauren Radnell, colour technologist at Taubmans. Clean whites include Taubmans Brilliant White and Dulux Vivid White.
2
Be guided by the light “For south-facing rooms, which receive less
natural light, it is best to use warm whites as they will soften the space and provide a comforting feel,” says Lauren. “Cool whites are best used in north-facing rooms, to balance out the warmth of bright daylight.”
3
if the room is fairly neutral, then a warmer white may be more suitable,” says British Paints senior brand manager Bonnie Jenkinson.
4
Consider your furnishings The colour of your cabinetry, furniture and art should factor. “If your space is already very colourful, then a cool white may work best. But
Make use of sample pots “Paint a large piece of paper in each white and adhere to the wall or surface you’re painting. Observe the different shades multiple times through the day and in the evening to see how they look in different lights,” says Bonnie.

he finish you use on your timber deck lets you express your personality outdoors. But which one should you choose? And what’s the difference between an oil and a stain? Cabot’s® has all the answers.
OIL Decking oil, such as Cabot’s Aquadeck®, is designed to protect your timber and enhance its good looks. Decking oil contains a small amount of pigment, complementing the beauty of hardwoods like merbau, spotted gum and jarrah. Oil won’t disguise the timber’s natural colour or hide the grain, perfect for these timbers, which look their very best with a natural finish or with a subtle colour tint.
STAIN
1 Cabot’s ‘Aquadeck’ exterior decking oil in Merbau, $78.90/4L, I/N: 1520084. 2 Cabot’s Deck & Exterior water-based timber stain in Beach House Grey, $99.90/4L, I/N: 1520191. 3 Cabot’s ‘Timbercolour’ Deck & Exterior paint, $64.90/4L, I/N: 1523550. Deck in Cabot’s ‘Aquadeck’ exterior decking oil in Merbau
Lighter timbers, such as treated pine, can need a bit more help to achieve striking good looks. A stain will do the same job as oil in rejuvenating and protecting timber, but has more pigmentation, which can transform lacklustre timber into the deck of your dreams. There’s a wide range of
hues: dull down orange tones with Acacia Green, go dark and moody with Blackburn – or try one of the many others in the Cabot’s® Deck & Exterior Stain range.
PAINT A coat of paint is a striking option to be considered. The main advantage is variety – using paint means you can have absolutely any colour on the spectrum you choose. Fancy a forest green or navy deck? Paint is the only way to go. Cabot’s Timbercolour® Deck & Exterior Paint has been specifically formulated for timber and is suitable to walk on - perfect for decks!

P
lanning an extension? First identify why you need the extra space and how you want to use it. “Usually people extend for very specific reasons, so clarify exactly what you want to achieve to help plan your budget, time frames and how much space you’ll need,” says Simon Croft of the Housing Industry Association (HIA). The purpose should form the basis of your design brief. Identifying space Claiming additional space might involve enclosing a verandah, incorporating a side passage, reimagining a garage, utilising part of the backyard or adding another level. What’s possible depends on various factors including your home’s structural integrity, layout, block size and neighbouring properties. For best results, seek professional advice from the outset. “Things like easements, site overlays, height limits and boundary setbacks can restrict where and what you can build, so it’s worthwhile engaging an experienced building designer or architect who can work within the parameters and help you navigate the approval process,” says Simon. bunnings |
“Most extensions require approval and the process can vary from state to state. The best place to start is to contact your local council” Simon Croft HIA

Plan it Jonathan Hayes of Tailored Construction Group (tailoredconstructiongroup.com.au), recommends familiarising yourself with local council building regulations, which vary between states and territories. “If you’re not aware of site-specific restrictions, you can waste a lot of time and money planning an extension that won’t comply,” he explains. “The best way to avoid this is to book a pre-DA (development application) design meeting with your local council development team, who can provide advice.” Be budget savvy Numerous factors influence the cost of an extension, with more complex projects being correspondingly more expensive, as you’d expect. “A cost-effective tip is to keep the shape simple and use standard measurements and lightweight materials, like cladding rather than brick,” says Jonathan. The style of the extension can also affect costs. A common dilemma, particularly if you have a period home, is whether or not to stick with the original style, but Jonathan suggests there are advantages
EXPERT TIP More complex projects are often more expensive, but as a rough guide builder Jonathan Hayes says you can expect to pay upwards of $3,000 per square metre, before finishes and fit-out
to creating a clear distinction between old and new. “Original details and heritage facades can be very expensive and difficult to replicate, so rather than compromise the overall look with faux feature additions, it’s often more effective to create contrast with a modern extension,” he explains. Going out or going up A ground-level rear extension can be relatively straightforward if you have a sizeable and accessible backyard. However if you don’t want to sacrifice green space, another option may be adding a second level. This could give you a significantly larger floor area, enabling you to add multiple rooms and capture views, says Simon Croft. “The first step though, with a major renovation that involves altering the roof and house frame, is to get your home assessed by a structural engineer to see if it can take the load of a second level,” he says. Be aware too, that the ground level will also need to be altered to accommodate internal stairs, says Jonathan, who advises that you can expect to lose approximately nine to 12 square metres, which is about the size of an average room. ◆

along a pathway of transformation to where a stunning new cantilevered living space has cleverly created a sheltered alfresco area. Capturing the futuristic “boxy-house trend”, as David describes it, the extension is clad in James Hardie’s Axon vertical groove cladding, which features a wide, ultrasmooth profile that echoes the sharp, clean cut style of the box’s design.
BEST OF OLD AND NEW
A modern legacy This modernised home’s past has been preserved thanks to a hidden letter – and James Hardie’s Axon cladding
W
hen Bec and David Smith chanced upon a letter concealed in the walls of their heritage-listed Sydney home, plans for their ultra-modern reno took a sudden turn. “Anyone who has undertaken a renovation knows that plans are almost guaranteed to change suddenly, unpredictably, but we had no idea of what we would find when we started and just how much our plans would move,” says Bec. The 114-year-old letter, drafted by the original craftsmen and unearthed at the start of the upgrade, read: “This building was erected by M. M. Haiges. Carpenter James Haston. Plasterers Thomas Smart & Henry Glossip. Painter M. Swan. Remember us all whoever finds this. 1902.”
These words compelled a rethink, and paying homage to those craftsmen by preserving the home’s history became a priority. The final outcome is a stunning home that walks through the passage of time, from the beautifully restored entryway to the bright new rear. “Your initial welcome imparts history and heritage,” explains David, “But a few steps beyond these rooms is a modern, light-filled, open-plan living area, telling the new story the Smith family is building together.”
SEAMLESS TRANSITIONS From the street, the home appears as it once did, with skilful engineering hiding the extension’s roofline and solar panels. Internally, guests are guided
The Axon cladding is key to uniting past and present. Finished in a soft grey, it visually links the minimalist extension to the home’s original masonry. The Axon cladding is also practical; made from premium fibre cement, it’s exceptionally durable, weathers well, and is easy to maintain – it’s resistant to flaking, warping or swelling, and damage from moisture, promising to stand the test of time as well as the original build. “We love the blend of old and new that gives the home new life and tells the story of the original builders. I like to think that they would be happy with how we have incorporated their legacy into our family home,” says Bec.

Shade lovers Coolaroo 1.8m x 2.4m solar motorised outdoor roller blind, $299, I/N: 0047640
Beat the heat and help save your skin this summer with Cancer Council-endorsed shade products from Coolaroo
A
s summer scorches, shady spots become prized places to sit and chill. But to thrive through summer, you need shade and sun protection – not always the same thing. Coolaroo offers both; plus, theirs are the only shade products endorsed by Cancer Council.
SAIL AWAY Shade sails are an economical and flexible way to create shade. Use one to instantly turn a patio into a desirable place to hang, or provide much needed protection – up to 95 per cent UV block – to a kids’ play space. Though easy to install, a shade sail is far from a temporary patch job; it’s actually designed as a permanent solution, with a 15-year warranty to back it up. If you already have the framework, like a pergola, it’s even easier to cool things down by throwing over some shade cloth. This durable DIY solution lets heat escape and blissfully cool breezes filter through.
BLINDSIDED In summer, there’s plenty of heat in the late afternoon sun. For this, there’s no better solution than outdoor roller blinds. Choose crank operation, easy release or motorised blinds, which operate with solar power, so there’s no hardwiring required.
BRILLIANT BROLLIES
1 Coolaroo ‘People Cover’ 1.8m x 3m 90%+ UV shade cloth, $46.22, I/N: 3300428. 2 Coolaroo 5.4m x 5.4m commercial grade square shade sail in Graphite, $265, I/N: 3300358. 3 Coolaroo ‘Brampton’ 3m x 4m cantilever umbrella in Charcoal, $699, I/N: 0123992. Endorsed by
A simple market umbrella will never go out of style, or try a cantilevered version – with 360° rotation, Coolaroo’s cantilevered umbrellas can be swivelled to give you constant shade as the sun moves through the sky. All the umbrella options help protect your family’s skin with UPF50+ fabric, the highest possible sun protection rating.

The couple have created a stylish outdoor space after storms ruined their yard

W
hen torrential summer storms ripped through the Gold Coast in 2019, one of the casualties was Lauren and Tim’s retaining wall. “Half of the wall collapsed, and we had dirt and mud everywhere,” says Lauren. Rather than simply repair the damage, the couple decided it was a perfect opportunity to enhance the backyard with a built-in barbecue and seating area, and to add stairs to the back of their block. Apart from the earthworks, the couple did the entire project themselves over four weekends, and couldn’t be happier with the result. “We’ve turned an unused area into a real focal point, which is incredibly handy when we entertain,” says Lauren. Level best The secret to the couple’s success in building the retaining wall was using durable, 7 Steel ‘Ezi Retain’ galvanised sleeper uprights, as well as ensuring the sleepers were exactly level. “We used the existing intact section of wall as a height guide to work out what the distance needed to be from the top of the new vertical support post to the bottom,” explains Tim. “When the concrete was set for the six posts, it formed a hard, level base at the correct height for the first sleeper to sit on, and the rest slotted into position.”
Knockout cookout A new outdoor kitchen, constructed around a Jumbuck ‘Comet Plus’ built-in barbecue, is the star attraction. The structure is topped by an acrylic benchtop, which the couple scored second-hand. The benchtop was cut to fit their barbecue and secured into place with Liquid Nails. “It really gives the area that outdoor kitchen feel, which is really nice, and it’s great having bench space either side of the barbecue,” explains Lauren.

The cooking area has plenty of hidden storage
Water works To ensure their new retaining wall wouldn’t suffer the same fate as the original rotted wall, plenty of work went into effective drainage. Grunt textile membrane was used to line the back of the retaining wall, which was then filled with 40mm aggregate and dirt. Grates were installed at the front of the retaining wall, so stormwater is quickly redirected away. Storage maximised For maximum functionality, the under-bench area was framed up, with doors added to create cabinets for a gas bottle and outdoor toys. For an integrated look, decking boards also clad a built-in bench seat.
Stairway to heaven A set of wide steps helps break up the expanse of wall and connects with the back of the block. Although you can buy stair stringers off the shelf, the couple made their own. “For the stair alcove, we screwed sleepers to the retaining wall at the height and depth of each step and in the centre we notched out a sleeper to support each step like a stringer underneath,” explains Tim.
“We chose pine over hardwood, as it was cost effective and didn’t take away from the aesthetic of the retaining wall and stairs”
Finishing touch The most satisfying part of the project was giving all the timber two coats of British Paints ‘Timber Protect’ fence stain in Charcoal, says Lauren. “It was the final touch that gave the new area and original intact section of the wall a cohesive look, as well as weather protection.” ◆

Before hanging a project like this, work out its weight plus the weight of whatever you plan to store on it, and choose fasteners suitable for your wall type and the combined load
This project, for experienced DIYers, makes a 1200mm x 700mm x 200mm wall cabinet/table. Mount 700mm from the floor.
STEPS
1
Using a combination square to mark up and a circular saw, from plywood, cut two 700mm x 200mm pieces for the top and bottom of the cabinet, and two 1166mm x 200mm side pieces. Position the sides between the top and bottom and screw together. Tip: By butt-joining the frame, you don’t have to work with tricky mitre joints.

From plywood, cut a 666mm x 1166mm backing board that infills the cabinet frame, then screw in place from the outside of the frame, 8mm in from the back edge. This will give rigidity to the outer frame, hold the frame square and provide a fixing board to mount the whole assembly to the wall once constructed.
3
From plywood, cut three 666mm x 160mm shelves. Dry fit into the desired positions, at heights to fit your equipment, then secure each with two screws through the backing board and one each side, 50mm in from the front. Tip: Ensure the shelves are fitted 20mm back from the front edge of the cabinet, as this will allow enough room for the tabletop in the closed position.
4
To make the door/tabletop, cut a piece of plywood to 1161mm x 661mm – this is the internal measurement of the cabinet frame, minus 2.5mm of clearance on each side. Tip: You could cut the ply to fit over the top of the cabinet body, rather than within the cavity, but fitting it this way exposes the attractive end grain of the plywood. Fit the door to the cabinet with a continuous hinge using supplied screws, positioning the hinge in the centre of the plywood. Install two double ball catches with supplied screws 150mm in from the tabletop edges, and 150mm in from the sides inside the cabinet, 17mm back from the front, to hold the door in the closed position.
5
To build the support leg, cut pine into two 661mm lengths for top and bottom, and two 662mm lengths for sides. Cut 12 lengths of dowel to 643mm. On the wider edges of the pine side pieces, from the bottom, measure and mark at 30mm intervals to make 12 marks. At each mark, drill a 22mm-wide hole to 10mm deep. Apply adhesive inside holes, insert the dowel pieces in the holes and secure with nails. Position the top and bottom frame pieces, wider edges facing in, and secure with timber screws from the top and bottom.
6
Use a continuous hinge to mount the support leg to the front face of the cabinet, 150mm down from the top; the support leg will drop to the floor as the door opens if the cabinet is mounted 700mm from the floor. ◆

The only thing worse than uninvited guests is those of the many-legged variety. Stop pests before they make it through the door with Yates® Home Pest Long Term Control Barrier Spray, a highly effective product for broad pest control. Its professional microcapsule technology kills cockroaches, ants, fleas, mosquitoes, silverfish and spiders on contact for up to 12 months indoors, and up to three months outside. Granule Bait could be key to solving the problem. Place the granules where you’ve spotted these unwelcome visitors, often near pavers, rubbish bins, drains, grass heaps, or places that provide them with a safe haven. This product can also be used indoors in cracks, crevices and voids, and covers up to 100m2. Once roaches and ants have ingested the granules, they return to their nest and poison the rest.

KEEP THEM OUT Once you’ve gained control over your pest problem, there are ways to keep them out. Roaches, ants and flies are attracted to food – open bags in the pantry and crumbs left on the bench will lure them back. Keep rubbish covered or sealed. Stacks of cardboard, magazines and newspapers, and humid areas, are breeding grounds for cockroaches. Seal any cracks they can sneak through and watch out for moisture, like leaking pipes or clogged drains.

iving your pantry an overhaul is a great way to develop a more organised approach to food storage, cooking and grocery shopping. Best of all, it can also help minimise food waste. Professional organiser Amy Revell, co-founder of The Art of Decluttering (theartofdecluttering. com.au), says it’s a popular zone to tackle. “Because you access the pantry multiple times a day, when greeted with neatly organised shelves where you can easily see and reach what you have, you continually reap the benefits,” she says. Our tips will help get your shelves in order.

Update it Start at the beginning Decluttering and reorganising your pantry can seem overwhelming. Yet if you set aside the time to do it once and do it well, you can put systems in place to help ensure it stays organised. The first step is to completely clear the shelves and take everything out, recommends Amy Revell; “As you place items on the bench or kitchen table, try to group like with like so you can see what you have. Group tinned veg, pastas, baking supplies, and as you go throw out anything out of date.” Once cleared, give surfaces a good clean and consider how the space can be improved. What do you have trouble finding? What do you use the most? This will help you plan your storage. Max your space Ensure everything has a place. “There can be a lot of wasted air space above your produce and the next shelf. Where possible I recommend adjusting your shelf height and incorporating additional shelving,” says professional organiser Robyn Amott of Bless This Mess (blessthismess.com.au). “This provides the flexibility to break up each category of item rather than stacking.” Internal wireware baskets, which can be retrofitted, can really enhance capacity, says Briony Mikrou, marketing communications manager at Kaboodle Kitchen: “Soft close pull-out baskets in a range of widths and slender tiered baskets, which draw the contents towards you, will stop items becoming lost and forgotten at the back of the cupboard.” Pantry doors and butler walls can also be used to boost storage. Try products like the Flexi Storage ‘Pantry’, which creates up to one metre of storage spread across five shelves. Add in the extras Flexi Storage ‘Clever Cube’ baskets in natural sea grass or water hyacinth add a nice textural feel and are a great way to corral overstocked items and bulk
“Get into the habit of running down your pantry food supplies by meal planning, and shopping from home first,” advises Robyn Amott of Bless This Mess
THREE WAYS TO KEEP FOOD FRESH FOR LONGER
To prolong the life of decanted
dry goods, choose containers specifically designed for food. “These have a better seal and lid and this is what will keep weevils and pantry moths out of your food,” says Amy. Store root vegetables and onions in an open basket. To prevent mould spreading, regularly clear out onion skins and garlic past its prime, and opt for plastic baskets you can easily wipe clean. Rotate existing cans to the front and newly purchased items to the rear when restocking tinned goods, says Robyn. This will help ensure they are used before their ‘best before’ dates

packets. “They’re easy to pull out from top or bottom shelves – just ensure you affix a label so everyone knows what’s kept where,” says Robyn. For easy access condiments and spreads, Amy loves incorporating a few tiered shelf raisers and lazy Susan turntables. Contain the clutter Decanting bulk dry goods like pasta, flour and cereal looks appealing, extends shelf life and enables you to stocktake your pantry at a glance, says Robyn. Stackable clear acrylic or plastic containers are a good choice. “The modular nature of square and rectangular containers maximises storage potential on your shelves and creates a streamlined look,” she says. Try the ClickClack ‘Pantry Cube’ range in 900ml to 4.3L sizes. Name it! A consistent style of labelling will give your pantry an ordered look and ensures you don’t grab plain flour when you’re after self-raising. “Some of our clients love pretty cursive labels and others are happy to use masking tape and a texta,” says Amy. To keep track of ‘best before’ dates, Robyn suggests writing the details on a label and sticking it to the bottom of the container. “Another good tip is to cut out the cooking instructions from packaging and affix it to the container as well,” she adds.

NEW PANTRY GOALS Start by mapping out the layout.
Weigh up your need
for bench space against your need for storage. Open shelving instead of concealed cabinetry will open up the space and allow easier access. Level off Pantry storage between waist and eye height is prime real estate and ideal for everyday items. “Group like items together and consider who will access them,” says Amy. “If your children get their own breakfast, place cereals and spreads together on a shelf they can reach.” If you want to keep treats away from little fingers, having a basket of occasional foods on a higher shelf is a great idea. Another zone might be devoted to weeknight dinner ingredients, or lunchbox staples. Where possible, Amy suggests keeping heavy items like bulk rice and oil on the ground or bottom shelves so they don’t accidentally topple down.

EnviroSafe trap
Hang an EnviroSafe trap wherever flies cluster and keep your outdoor areas fly free
Buzz off! Show pesky flies who’s boss with EnviroSafe, the bug-busting fly trap that really works
A
s much as we love summer, it is also the season of flies. Rid your home of six-legged fiends with Australian-made EnviroSafe fly traps.
areas. Dispose of the contents and replace with fresh Eco-Bait when the trap is full of flies or getting whiffy.
GAME FACE ON
If you’re looking for an eco alternative, Eco-Bait is formulated with non-toxic, food-grade ingredients and no chemical insecticides. The trap itself is reusable and recyclable. As for the flies, they can be disposed of in the bin or even in the garden. Dig a spade-deep hole in a garden bed or compost heap – the Eco-Bait won’t harm your vegies and the flies will break down in the soil, completing the circle of life!
You’ve got a summer of barbecues planned, so you need a fly trap that means business. EnviroSafe traps are filled with a unique Eco-Bait, which flies find irresistible. They enter the trap and cannot escape – job done! If you have a larger backyard or a farm, choose a jumbo fly trap, or even two.
MASTER THE TRAP Simply add a sachet of bait to the trap and mix with warm water. Hang the trap 1.5-2m above ground, well out of reach of pets. Although the Eco-Bait is non-toxic and safe for pets, you don’t want Fido munching on dirty flies. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot where flies love to swarm – such as near the compost heap or bins – but away from the house, barbecue or entertaining

Break the mould Craving a home makeover but can’t quite swing a full reno? Transform your spaces in a weekend with these six easy ideas using timber trim
O
ffering a huge amount of bang for your DIY buck, moulding can add character to your existing cabinetry, doors, walls and windows. Plus, a transformation can be achieved in a weekend with simple tools and some basic DIY skills.
1
Words Vanessa Keys. Photography www.ti-mediacontent.com; (opposite) Getty Images. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.
Make an entrance The trim around a door frame – also known as casing – conceals unsightly gaps left between the frame and the plasterboard. If you can master mitred corners (a joinery task made much simpler with a mitre box or mitre saw), it’s easy to add moulding around the door frame to give it a romantic new look. You could also try using pretty moulding to embellish plain skirting or a cornice. To complete the look, paint the finished trim just a shade darker than the walls.
2
Add interest to walls If you’re fed up with plain walls, turn to the dado. This horizontal rail is a common feature in traditional or Hamptons-style homes. “The dado rail should be positioned a third of the way up the wall,” says renovation and interiors designer Yelda Adal from A Sense of Style Interiors (asenseofstyle.com.au). For extra visual interest, she suggests placing additional mouldings in a wainscoting effect below the rail. Try using the dado as a divide for different paint colours, adding wallpaper or making a feature like a gallery wall in the upper section. Dress up cabinetry Adding simple moulding to the front of your kitchen cabinetry can give the appearance of raised or inset panel doors without the cost of a full kitchen reno. Choose a design that appears to be a part of the door instead of an afterthought – typically small, thin mouldings look better than large, wide ones. Install leaving a space around the perimeter for best results. }

Create a custom look Do you have some tricky areas that need a visual boost? The beauty of using trim to add character to a plain wall or door is that you can make it virtually any size or shape you like. Use beading to enhance a cupboard or to give a bathroom vanity a boost. Or add crown moulding to a feature-free bookcase, or above kitchen wall cabinets to disguise the gap between the top of your cupboards and the ceiling. For a consistent look, especially in a small space, use a similar style of trim.

Define your artwork Wall-mounted moulding is an easy way to make artwork pop. “Start by making a large rectangle wall frame using moulding,” says Eva Bowker from Fantastic Handyman (fantastichandyman. com.au). “Paint it in the same colour as the wall – it should look like a big frame. Paint the inside of the frame a darker hue than the wall colour to create a focal point. Arrange and mount artwork inside the frame – and repeat until you’ve created a mini art gallery.”
Keep door panels fresh and modern with simple hardware that’s consistent with your home’s overall look
6
Give a mirror an upgrade “Adding a moulding frame onto an existing mirror is the easiest way to upgrade your bathroom,” says Eva. “Avoid the hassle of detaching the mirror by placing the frame on top of the mirror using a moulding adhesive. This will make the project easier and mess-free.” For a modern look, choose a simple frame in the colour of the existing fixtures. For a more traditional feel, opt for ornate details and finish with gold or silver spray paint. ◆

The tech toilet upgrade - simply wave your hand over the sensor for a half flush, or hold your hand over the sensor for a full flush
Hands free Wave hello to a new standard in toilet hygiene with the Hygenix sensor cistern
I
t’s probably safe to say that we’re all now very aware of the bacteria around us. The bathroom is host to more than its fair share of germs, but the Hygenix sensor cistern helps maintain next level cleanliness where it matters most. The ability to flush the loo with the wave of a hand means you needn’t consider who came before you, or indeed think about the bacteria you might leave behind.
TECH SAVVY Toilet tech arguably hasn’t changed much since the invention of the dual flush loo, but this new development is well worth the wait. Simply wave over the sensor for a half flush, or hold your hand over it for a full flush. And when
gadget-shy guests come calling, they can still operate the flush by pushing the button manually.
EASY UPGRADE The best news is that this touchless technology doesn’t even require a new toilet. The Hygenix sensor cistern (or cistern with seat and link) can be retrofitted to your existing loo and once installed – a relatively simple job for a licensed plumber – the cistern is low maintenance, with the sensor flush running on four AA batteries (which will last up to 40,000 cycles), no mains wiring, and a backup manual flush which doesn’t require batteries to operate, so you’ll never be caught short.

DIY wood panelling
Safety tip Before nailing or drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring and pipework, and turn off the power while working
Work some 3D wizardry on walls and doors, using timber trims to create character panelling
C
lean lines can be lovely, but if your home is bearing too many blank faces on walls, doors and cabinetry, panelling is a great way to deliver some character. Lengths of moulding (and some fairly basic DIY skills) make it simple to transform a surface – we’ve used it to give walls and doors a traditional makeover with rectangular shapes, but you can let your imagination run wild.

WALL PA N E L L I N G Choose a moulding profile to suit your style. We opted for a rounded profile to complement the existing skirting boards, using a larger 40mm-wide moulding for the dado rail that runs along the top, and a slimmer 33mm to make the panels. To calculate how much moulding to buy, mock up the panels on the wall using painter’s tape. Measure the width and height, multiply by two, then multiply by as many panels as you need, adding about 200mm extra per panel to allow for cutting. For example, you’ll need two metres to make a 300mmwide by 600mm-high panel.

To install the dado rail, measure 820mm from the top of the skirting. Position the thickest section of the 40mm moulding along the top, securing with a nail gun and 25mm brads along the base, 300mm apart. Note: Dado rails are usually positioned about a third of the way up the wall.
Mark out the panels with painter’s tape, using a 90mm offcut as a spacer below the dado rail, above the skirting and between the panels. Measure the rail (horizontal) and stile (vertical) lengths around the outside tape line. Tip: The tape is slimmer than the moulding so it can be left on the wall as a template.
PRO TIP Using an electric mitre saw ensures accuracy for repetitive cuts and a nail gun makes fast work of attaching the moulding, but you could also use a handsaw with a mitre box and a hammer with bullet head nails
To make the first stile, set a mitre saw to cut 45° left to right. To cut the end, position the 33mm moulding with the thickest side against the saw fence. From the longest point mark 600mm, move the saw to cut from right to left, then flip the moulding to cut outside the mark.
To cut the remaining stiles, set the saw to cut left to right, then trim the end of the moulding. Position the first stile against it to match and mark the short sides. Move the saw to cut from right to left, then flip the moulding to cut. Repeat to cut the 300mm-long rails. }

To make a panel, apply adhesive to the back of a rail. Position the spacer on the skirting and rest the rail on it while centering it over the tape. Secure the middle and ends with brads to the inside of the moulding, wiping away excess adhesive with a damp cloth.
7
Smooth over any gaps in the mitred joints and the nail heads with timber filler, applying with a spatula and smoothing over with a finger. Leave the filler to dry. Lightly sand with a fine-grade sanding sponge until filler is smooth and matches the shape of the profile.
6
Apply adhesive to a stile and position it against the base to create a neat, square mitre. Use a spirit level to check it’s straight. Secure with brads, wiping away excess adhesive. Repeat with the other stile and the top rail, then complete the remaining panels.

Apply matching wall paint to the dado rail and panels with a 50mm angled cutter brush. Leave it to dry, then apply a second coat. Tip: Run the brush sideways along the grooves and around the sides of the panel, dabbing into the corners with the tip.
While we’ve added panelling to a hollow-core interior door, this method could also be used to spruce up a wardrobe or even a front door – just be sure to use paint for exterior use if it’s outside. Once you’ve completed the project, give the whole door a fresh coat of paint for a neat finish.

On the closed door, use a 90mm-wide offcut as a spacer to mark a line around the inside of the jamb. Use the spacer to mark the area between the panels to allow for access to the handle. Finish the lines using a spirit level to ensure they’re straight.

Measure around the panels to work out the lengths for the rails (horizontal pieces) and stiles (vertical pieces). Note: The pencil mark indicates the outside of the moulding, measured from the longest points of the mitred cuts.
Position the moulding to cut on the outside of the marks, from right to left. Use this as a template and repeat to cut four stiles and four rails. Note: Positioning the blade on the offcut side of the mark allows for the width of the blade for an accurate length.
Position the mouldings against the front edge of a mitre box, slim side facing out, to cut the end at 45°, from left to right. Mark the length of a stile from the longest point of the cut. Tip: Cut the long pieces first as they can be cut down if there’s a mistake.
Working from the base up, apply adhesive to the rails and push them firmly onto the door. Check corners are square and hold in place with painter’s tape. Remove excess adhesive with a damp cloth. Leave to dry. Tip: Use the spacer to position the base rail of the top panel.
•Timbers vary by state and territory; contact your local store for further information. Paint colours may vary on application.
PRO TIP Marking out the pattern on a closed door ensures it’s visually in line with the door jamb. In determining the size of the panels, look at the position of the door handle and ensure there’s unobstructed space around it
6
Use a screwdriver to remove the handle or tape around it. Paint the door, loading the roller and pulling it along the profile and around the sides of the panels, leaving to dry. Apply a second coat, leave to dry and reattach the handle. ◆

13
Oil for the best “The humble drill only requires a little WD-40 on the chuck teeth once a year, if that,” says Steve. Hand tools with hinges or pivots, such as pliers and aviation shears, also benefit from a squirt once in a while.

Current champions Why mess about with dangerous leads when you can plug in safely and easily with Ampfibian?
Y
ou might know someone who thinks they’ve gotten away with connecting a 15A RV or caravan to a standard 10A power supply using a modified cable. As well as breaking the law, they’re playing a dangerous game with electricity. Overloading a cable with a higher current than it can handle is a recipe for disaster. Besides the hazard to human life, insurance is unlikely to cover precious possessions that went up in flames because of a dodgy power cord.
PLUG AND PLAY It’s so much safer and easier (not to mention, legal) to simply use an Ampfibian caravan power adaptor when connecting your van or RV at a friend’s place, at home, or anywhere without 15A power. Ampfibian, Australia’s caravan electrical safety specialists, make adaptors that are tough, weatherproof and will keep the supply circuit safe from overheating, so you don’t have to worry about it causing a fire. Every model includes a residual current device (RCD) to protect you and your family from the risk of electrocution, as well as a circuit breaker to prevent overloads that could cause overheating and fire.

The Ampfibian surge protector is Australia’s first caravan-specific 15A surge protector; plugged between the camping ground’s power supply and your van, it provides protection for all your connected electronics. Ampfibian’s weatherproof surge protector even includes an outlet diagnostic to immediately alert you if the power supply is wired incorrectly – it does happen!
CONNECT, PROTECT AND RELAX Connections between cables can easily come unplugged, and tying them in knots won’t protect them from rain. Fortunately there’s a better option: a weatherproof Ampfibian connector protector with a tough polycarbonate casing that can be secured using a padlock.

65 A fold-up table is a compact game-changer that brings instant comfort at mealtimes
Cooking appliance need to know “A portable LPG camping stove is a high-pressure appliance and does not require a regulator, which means it uses a gas cylinder with a camping fitting (a three-eighths inch BSP-LH connection),” says Rina Di Pietro, creative director at Sitro Group. “A gas barbecue is a low-pressure appliance. It needs a regulator to attach it to the gas cylinder. It still uses LPG (or propane), but the gas cylinder used for barbecues has a POL fitting.” The best solution is to attach a camping stove or lantern to a camping cylinder, and use a POL cylinder and regulator with a barbecue. “However, there are adaptors available that allow you to convert a POL fitting to a threeeighths inch BSP-LH connection and vice versa,” says Rina. }

Gourmet on the go More efficient than cooking eggs over an open fire, a portable stove is ideal for feeding hungry campers. Make sure you’re using the correct type of cylinder (see box, right). A folding table and camp chairs turn a humble campsite barbecue into a comfortable dinner party. Protect your alfresco feast from flies with a mesh food tent. F

or any household looking to reduce their plastic waste, beeswax wraps are a handy addition to the pantry – use them to wrap a sandwich for lunch or to cover a bowl of leftovers. Making them yourself is easy and more cost-effective than buying them! This is a great way to use up leftover scraps of fabric (100 per cent cotton only) from other projects as well. To look after the wraps, wash with mild soap and cool water (hot water will rinse away the wax).
TOOLS & MATERIALS
Tape measure Scissors Grater Baking tray Oven gloves New paintbrush Pinking shears (available at craft stores) 100 per cent cotton fabric Pure beeswax Baking paper Jojoba or coconut oil (optional, available online or at health food stores)
Above: Apiaries 8 100% pure beeswax bars, $5.95/30g each, I/N: 0076398. Joseph Joseph ‘Multi Grate’ 2 in 1 paddle grater in Yellow, $22.95*, I/N: 0239759. All other products, stylist’s own. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. This product is available to buy online only and is sold and delivered through a Bunnings MarketLink Trusted Seller. Not all items are available in all states and territories. *Delivery charges may apply.
STEPS
1
Measure and cut the fabric into varying sizes (common dimensions are 17cm x 17cm, 25cm x 30cm and 34cm x 34cm). Tip: Add 5cm to allow for the fabric shrinking with the wax. Preheat oven to 160ºC. Grate the beeswax – you will need at least half a 30g block per wrap. Line a baking tray with baking paper and lay the fabric on top. Spread the grated wax over the fabric, then add a few drops of jojoba or coconut oil (this is optional, but makes the wraps more malleable).
2 3
4
Place in the oven until the wax softens – keep an eye on the wraps, as the wax melts quickly. Remove from the oven and use the paintbrush to gently brush the melted wax over the entire wrap, quickly flipping the fabric to brush the wax onto the underside as well. Tip: The melted wax will stick to the fibres on your paintbrush, so use one you’re happy to throw away or keep for the next time you make wraps. Hang to dry and set for at least 10 minutes before touching. Once dry, cut the edge with pinking shears to prevent fraying. ◆

ADVERTISING FEATURE Cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting helps keep your home healthy and germ free
Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner, $14.99/500ml, I/N: 0233154
Health at home Help stop the spread of germs and viruses*, including COVID-19, with Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner
P
rotecting against germs, bacteria and viruses has never been more important, and the task of cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising your home’s surfaces is one of the first lines of defence. But not everyone understands the importance of – or difference between – the three processes. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner is a comprehensive and specialised three-in-one product that cleans, sanitises and disinfects. Easy to use and
*SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), Vaccinia virus
effective, it’s proven to kill 99.99 per cent of germs and viruses*, including COVID-19.
CLEANING VS SANITISING VS DISINFECTING Viruses, such as COVID-19, can live on surfaces and eradicating them requires effective cleaning and disinfecting. What is the distinction between the three processes? Although cleaning removes germs and impurities from
surfaces, it doesn’t necessarily kill disease-causing organisms. Sanitisers are chemicals suitable for use on surfaces with which food for human consumption may come in contact, for the purposes of reducing pathogenic or food spoilage microorganisms to a sanitary level on such a surface. Disinfectants destroy bacteria and viruses. It’s important to read product labels on cleaning products to know which step in the process each product tackles. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner takes care of all three in one handy product.
NO HARSH CHEMICALS
Although Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner is a hospital-grade disinfectant, it contains no harsh chemicals or alcohols. Therefore, it does not require any PPE (personal protective equipment, such as masks or gloves) to use. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner is a ready-to-use formula that can be used in food areas with no need for rinsing and is even readily biodegradable, so it’s kinder on the environment. Always read the label before use.

Measure and mark 1665mm up from the longest side of the base and mark a 70° line. Cut the marks with a circular saw, then sand all over with 180grit abrasive paper.
On inside of the uprights, from the top, mark 350mm, 790mm, 1230mm and 1670mm, positioning an offcut (from the base) with cut edge facing up to mark a guide for the top of the trays. Measure 40mm down from these and mark 20mm in from the edges to use a 3.5mm bit to drill right through. From the outside of the uprights, use a 10G countersinking bit on the holes.
Working upwards from the base, position the trays between the uprights against the marks, using the offcut as a guide to centre them. Check the tray is straight and level, then secure through the holes with 30mm countersunk screws.

On the face of the fronts and backs, along one side, mark 50mm from the ends, position the jig and use a 10mm bit to drill 8mm-deep holes through the middle. Position the jig on the ends, on the left and right, drilling 8mm-deep holes through the middle.
Dab adhesive into the holes of the back, front, base and sides, applying along the joins as the box is assembled. Push dowels into the holes of the base, position the sides, then push dowels into the back and position the base assembly. Push dowels into the front and position. Clamp and leave to dry.
Apply primer inside and outside the boxes, leaving to dry. Apply three light coats of spray paint, leaving to dry after each. Position painter’s tape around the rims and apply two coats of waterproofing membrane inside with a brush, leaving to dry after each. Drill drainage holes, centred 150mm from the ends, with a 20mm spade bit.
To plant up the boxes, position 80mm squares of wire mesh over the drainage holes and sprinkle a 10mm layer of drainage gravel over the bases. Position any larger plants first, then fill with soil and water in. For smaller plants, fill the boxes halfway with soil before planting. Fix the stand against a solid wall and add the planter boxes. ◆

To make the uprights, measure and cut the pine in half with a mitre saw to make four 1500mm lengths. From the top of each, centre and mark 150mm and 1350mm to make holes using a 25mm spade bit with a drill press. Tip: Prevent breakout by drilling halfway, then flipping to finish from the back.
2
On pairs of uprights, centre and mark 300mm from the top to position the parts of the cabin hook at 45°, with the hook plate turned anti-clockwise on the left upright, and the eye plate turned clockwise on the right, using a drill to secure with the supplied screws.
3
To make the rails, measure and cut the dowel to 1600mm lengths with a mitre saw. Measure and mark 25mm from the ends (to make holes for the lynch pins) using an 8mm bit with a drill press. Tip: Set the depth of the press to drill through the dowel and into an offcut, avoiding the plate below.
4
On one rail, measure and mark 70mm from the ends to make holes using an 8mm bit with a drill press. Dab adhesive onto two dowel connectors and slot them in. Sand all over the uprights, rails and into the 25mm holes with 180grit abrasive paper. Tip: This is the top rail, the remaining rails form the base.
PRO TIP
5
To make the cover, along one 2000mm side of the fabric, fold a hem of 10mm and iron. Fold again to make a 40mm loop. Iron, then machine or hand sew to secure, leaving the ends open (the base rails are threaded through the loops to hold down the sides). Repeat for the second piece. Tip: If you don’t sew, you could use iron-on hemming tape. bunnings
6
Position the fabric together, loop sides facing out and at the base. Measure along the top, 120mm down, and pin. Sew along the pin line, then repeat to reinforce the seam. Trim away the excess fabric with scissors, cutting along the outside of the seam closest to the join. Butterfly the seam to iron it open, which will help position the cover along the top rail.
If you don’t have a drill press, clamp the timber securely and use a drill, holding it at 90° to ensure the shafts of the holes are straight
HOW TO PUT THE TENT TOGETHER To assemble the frame, position pairs of uprights onto the ends of the top rail, sliding on the left sides first, with the hooks facing outwards. Add lynch pins to the outside holes and stand the frame up, holding it in place with the hooks. To assemble the cover, thread base rails through the curtain hems, then position the cover over the frame. From the inside of the uprights, push the rails into the base holes, securing with lynch pins through the outside holes. Dig the feet into the sand for stability, spread the gathers of the cover out evenly and avoid using the tent in a strong breeze.

Summer beauties Add pretty colour to the garden with bright flowering annuals Portulaca The showy double blooms of this trailing succulent are perfect for brightening rockeries, hanging baskets or garden beds. Its cheery flowers in white, red, pink yellow and orange are a welcome sight in summer and continue to bloom all season long – without too much care. Plant in full sun and well-draining soil. Once established, they need little water, but will benefit from a deep drink on hot days. French marigold With its showy golden-orange blooms, this annual is the spirit of summer. Plant en masse in beds, planter boxes or low wooden barrels in full sun and prepare beds with compost before planting. They make great companion plants for vegie beds – they attract beneficial bugs like bees and help deter pests.
