I’m a fan of every month of the year, but there is something truly special about January. The (slightly hectic) festive season has passed and now it’s time to soak up the warm weather and sunshine, invite friends over for a casual barbecue and swim, and, of course, there’s those summer holidays. Some of my best memories are of heading up the coast on camping trips with our two excited kids in tow. Which is one of the (many!) reasons why I love this month’s camping story, from page 13. It’s

inspired by beach shack style, from page 45

PLAY TIME

Stay cool and enjoy the outdoors with the fun range of Bunnings pool toys and backyard activities - there’s even something for the fourlegged family member! Thinking of putting in an above-ground pool? Find out how from page 54.

full of inspiration and handy DIYs to help add a bit of luxury to your next camp-out. That camp kitchen is a must-make!

If you’d like to maintain that relaxed holiday vibe all year round, turn to page 45 for easy ways to achieve “beach shack” style (one of my favourite looks). And then get ready for your best gardening year ahead. From page 29, we share our expert guide to what to do each season, including ideas of what to plant right now for your best chance of top results.

Happy new year!

Little apprentice

For this month’s issue, we created a gorgeous outdoor cinema to share with friends. When building our DIY screen – try it yourself, using the howto on page 25 – we had some very welcome help from volunteer apprentice Ned, who chose the perfect attire for this DIY project. Give that young tradie an ice cream! And see page 65, where we create a super-cute retro ice-cream holder no young outdoor movie fan should be without. Happy viewing!

Coffee break

It’s no surprise Shannon’s (@ourperthreno) lightweight coffee table, made from a circular pine panel and white speckle pot, has quickly become a favourite in her household - and on Instagram! “I thought the timber panel would make a great coffee-table top, and was walking the aisles in Bunnings looking for a base when I spotted the plastic stone-look pot,” says Shannon. She applied furniture oil to the timber panel, then attached it to the pot’s base with silicone. For more easy projects to tackle this weekend, turn to our DIY special on page 63.

Brighten up outdoor areas with pots or hanging baskets filled with colourful annuals. Try calibrachoa, petunia, lobelia, portulaca, and nasturtium. Feed regularly to promote blooms.

Apply mulch to the vegie patch, pots, and garden beds to help keep roots cool, hold in moisture, and smother weeds. An organic mulch will add nutrients to the soil as it breaks down.

Grow more plants from cuttings of your indoor faves. Devil’s ivy, angelwing begonia, monstera and some philodendrons are easy to strike. Remove the lower foliage from a 10-15cm stem, dip the end into a rooting hormone and put in a pot with propagating mix. Water regularly to keep the mix moist.

Sow successive crops of leafy greens for a longer harvest. See below for some suggestions.

In warm, wet weather, fungal diseases like powdery mildew are rampant on summer-fruiting vegies. Treat with a dual action fungicide/ insecticide that also helps to control pests.

1 PowerFeed ‘Pro Series’ roses and flowers plant food concentrate, $15.83/1.2L, I/N: 0116790. 2 Neutrog ‘Whoflungdung’ mulch, $19.50, I/N: 0057433.

3 Scotts Osmocote ‘Seed & Cutting’ premium potting mix, $8.68/10L, I/N: 3020058.

4 Yates ‘Tomato And Vegetable Dust’ insecticide/fungicide, $10.48/500g, I/N: 2961370. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

New-year replenish

If you’ve got a keen eye for DIY, now is a great time to update the tool shed so you’re ready for all those holiday jobs.

ROCKET

Plant this fast-growing leafy green in pots or beds, in full sun to part shade. Harvest in as little as six weeks.

SILVERBEET

A vegie bed stalwart, it produces leafy stalks for about six months. Harvest outer leaves regularly.

SORREL

This herb’s tangy lemon flavour is great in salads, sauces and soups. Water often in dry conditions*.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

1 Cut the plywood according to the cutting list (below left.)

Tip: For all joints, use a framing square to mark a line for screws on the best face, pre-drill with a 3mm bit and finish with a 6mm countersinking bit. Apply adhesive along raw edges, secure with 25mm screws and clamp while the adhesive dries.

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (mask, ear and eye protection)

n Tape measure and pencil n Circular saw with straightedge

n Framing square n Drill with 3mm, 2mm, 6mm countersinking and driver bits

n Screwdriver

n Quick-grip clamps

n Cloths

n Combination pliers

n Five 1220mm x 610mm x 12mm plywood sheets• n 180-grit abrasive paper with sanding block

CUTTING LIST

n Masking tape

n Exterior adhesive n 8G x 25mm countersunk screws n Danish oil

n Four 90mm x 60mm loose-pin butt hinges n 8G x 12mm and 15mm pan head screws n 1.8mm clock chain

n 224mm cabinet handle

n Two 160mm grab handles

n Magnetic cupboard catch n Sash fastener

4 Secure the shelf lip to the top shelf from underneath, position in the box, securing the shelf into the dividers and through the sides. At the back, mark lines to secure all the shelves, spacing the screws evenly. Use a cloth to seal all the plywood with two coats of oil, leaving to dry after each.

5 On the lid, mark a line 6mm in from the front edge to secure the lid lip. On the inside of the lid, at the back, mark 60mm in from the side edges to pre-drill and secure hinges with 12mm screws. Position the lid on the box, with the hinges outside the back panel, and secure.

On five sheets of 1220mm x 610mm x 12mm marine-grade plywood, cut a 600mm x 600mm back, two 600mm x 512mm sides, three 600mm x 500mm shelves for top, base and middle, and a 600mm x 50mm shelf lip. Mark a 624mm x 524mm lid, 624mm x 455mm front and 624mm x 120mm lid lip

On the offcuts, mark 500mm width for a 300mm base divider, two 100mm middle shelf dividers and a 294mm short shelf. Cut two 200mm x 50mm packers. Label all pieces with masking tape.

Cut from large to small using a circular saw with a straightedge. Smooth the cuts with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove breakout.

8 On the front, mark 200mm from the edges and 60mm from the top to pre-drill and secure a 224mm cabinet handle, snapping the supplied screws to fit. Position grab handles on the sides, 190mm from the front and 75mm down, pre-drill through the holes, clamp packers inside and secure right through with 25mm screws. CUTTING LIST

n Use a mitre saw to cut 70mm x 35mm treated pine• into two 1800mm posts, two 1870mm rails, two 600mm bases, four 260mm base supports, two 260mm top rail brackets and two 35mm cross rail brackets.

To assemble Lay the posts flat to bolt the rails and bases from the front and sides, tightening the nuts with a spanner. Stand the frame up, tap pegs into the ground, install the rod, pull down the blind.

To disassemble Wind up the blind by hand, remove the rod and pegs. Lay the frame flat, unscrew the nuts and tap out bolts to remove the rails and bases. Replace the bolts and nuts in the holes and use tie straps to hold the pieces together.

1 Follow the cutting list (below left). Position the base supports against the bases, flush with the ends, checking the gaps fit a 70mm offcut. Clamp and pre-drill each twice with a 3.5mm bit to secure with 50mm screws. Drill peg holes 70mm from the ends with a 10mm bit.

2 On the wide post faces, clamp and drill holes 35mm up from the base. Fit the posts in the bases to drill holes right through. Secure using 148mm eyebolts, swapping the nuts with M10 wing nuts. Tip: If the holes don’t line up exactly after painting, re-drill to widen them slightly.

3 On the 35mm face of the posts, drill 400mm up from the base and 35mm from the top. On the rails, drill centred holes 17mm in from the ends, securing to the posts with 200mm eyebolts, tightening with a spanner and screwdriver.

4 Position the top and cross rail brackets on the posts, under corresponding rails, pre-drilling to secure with 50mm screws. Dismantle the frame and sand. Apply two coats of self-priming paint with a roller, leaving to dry after each. Reassemble.

5 To attach the blind, remove and replace the pin bracket disc at 90° for side mounting. Position brackets on the top rail, against the posts, and pre-drill with a 2mm bit to secure with the supplied screws. Cut and remove the chain, then install the blind with the bottom rail at the front to fold forward.

Keep in mind…

6 On the inside of the posts, position 16mm rod brackets 330mm up, flush with the front, and pre-drill with a 2mm bit to secure with the screws. Cut a 16mm rod to 1800mm with a hacksaw and install. Pull down the blind, then fold the bottom rail under to drop it behind the cross rail at the back. 

n When using cutting tools and working with treated timber, work in a well-ventilated area, wearing the appropriate safety gear.

n To install accessories, such as the curtain and rod brackets, pre-drill and use a screwdriver with the supplied screws to avoid stripping the heads.

n Check the wing nuts are fully tightened before standing the frame up.

n The screen is not designed for climbing or swinging. Do not use during high winds and pack away when not in use.

Welcome to a new gardening year!

Kick it off with a few projects and finally achieve that perfect outdoor oasis you’ve always dreamed of. The secret to success is to have a plan, so we’ve asked the experts for strategies for each season to ensure this year is the year for your garden.

Summer

Planning

While summer isn’t the best season for planting projects, it’s a great time to plan for the year ahead. Sue Edwards of Seasol suggests looking at your space, the time you want to spend in it and the purpose it serves for you and your family. Make a wish list, which might include a vegie patch, a scented garden, entertaining areas, paths, a lawn, a water feature or an irrigation system.

Also consider how you can improve existing features – do you need to cut back an overgrown tree, or does the lawn need a weed treatment?

“Starting with a plan will help you determine what needs to be done, which products need to be purchased and a suitable time frame,” explains Sue.

Horticulturist Chloe Foster (@fosteryourgarden) suggests observing your garden before embarking on major works. “Watch how sunlight moves through the garden and see where rain runs and pools,” she says. Understanding your garden’s microclimate helps ensure you’re working with it, rather than against it.

Care and maintenance

If summer’s rapid growth has taken over, you’ll need to get rid of weeds and debris to better understand the lay of the land. Hand pull weeds or use an organic weedkiller for large areas. Secateurs, loppers and a pruning saw may come in handy, too, for tackling overgrown shrubs and trees.

What to plant

Take care with what you plant in high summer – plants need more water and care to become established in hot conditions. Those you could plant now include summer vegies such as beans, chillies, eggplant, tomatoes, sweet corn, pumpkin and zucchini. Consider erecting shade cloths to reduce heat stress and apply a fortnightly dose of seaweed solution to promote healthy roots. Always water deeply, as this encourages the roots to grow deeper into the soil, which in turn helps plants better withstand hot, dry periods.

Autumn

Planning

Now is the time to plan and plant your cold-season vegies. If you’re starting a new patch, consider the availability of light and access to water. Most vegetables need six hours of sunlight, but leafy greens like lettuce and kale can get by with four to six

hours. Edible plants also need a regular supply of water, so it’s ideal to have a tap close by. Alternatively, invest in a retractable hose or install an irrigation system to make watering easier.

This season brings muted autumnal colours and an opportunity to take stock of your garden

Care and maintenance

Add compost, aged manure or pelletised fertiliser before planting, and spread a layer of mulch to help conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. Also regularly check on your plants. “A weekly stocktake allows you to see what’s going on and if there are any problems that need fixing,” says Sue.

This season is the perfect time for planting evergreen shrubs or trees, or transplanting existing ones, says Chloe. It’s a great time to lay turf or repair bare patches, too. “The soil is still warm, and plants can establish better without the stresses of extreme weather,” she says. Before you plant, check how much sun and shade the area gets and choose species accordingly. If you love flowers, now’s the time to plant spring bulbs in garden beds or pots. Try daffodils, jonquils, tulips, hyacinths, ranunculus, anemones or freesias.

“Working with the seasons instead of against them makes gardening easier and gives you results. It can also save you time and disappointment”

Winter

Planning

The cold season is a good time to start or continue to chip away at larger projects such as constructing a garden path, creating an outdoor cooking or entertainment area, or installing a shed, but aim to focus on just one at a time so the jobs don’t languish unfinished. Start by assessing the scope of the project, then contact relevant tradespeople and suppliers to gain as much knowledge as you can to understand what’s involved. Source all the materials that will be needed, including paint colours and finishes, to ensure the project is ready to go. But if it’s beyond you, don’t be afraid to outsource.

Care and maintenance

Winter, when growth slows right down, provides the perfect opportunity to get a few jobs done. Now’s the time to hard prune deciduous trees and shrubs, cutting them back to a manageable size. Deciduous shrubs and fruit trees can also be treated for pests and diseases; for example, leaf curl on stone fruit, powdery mildew on roses or scale on citrus.

W hat to plant

Deciduous trees and shrubs, like roses and fruit trees, can be planted now – find them as bare-rooted stock in stores. Unless you live in a warm, frost-free zone, avoid planting evergreen species, as they could succumb to frost damage. Wait until early spring, or when the chance of last frost has gone, before planting.

Spring

Planning

This is the season of warmth and renewed hope! Longer days also mean more opportunity to spend time outside in the garden, so in many ways, spring is really the first season of the gardening year. Everywhere you look, in gardens big and small, plants are bursting into life again –spring-flowering shrubs like murraya, may bush and lilac are covered with masses of blooms. It’s a time of year when gardeners are spoilt for choice with planting options – from delicious vegies, herbs and citrus trees to fabulous flowers and lush lawns. For inspiration, take a stroll around your neighbourhood and see what plants other people are growing and make a note of any that might work well in your own garden.

Saxon mini greenhouse with seed tray, $11.98, I/N: 2960182

Care and maintenance

“The garden bursts into spring growth, so help plants along by feeding with a granular or liquid fertiliser,” says Sue Edwards. Refresh tired lawns by aerating, dethatching, top dressing and finishing with a good feed. Keep an eye out for insect pests like caterpillars, scale and aphids and, if necessary, control them with an organic spray.

What to plant

Vegetables, fruit, and herbs grow well when planted in spring, as do many flowering annuals and perennials. In cool and warm temperate zones, get a head start on summer vegies by sowing seeds in a warm spot indoors. This allows time to improve beds and, when the weather warms up, the seedlings will be ready to plant. Lay turf or sow lawn seed in spring – prepare the ground by weeding, grading, levelling and adding underlay.

Keep in mind…

n Wear gloves, long sleeves and a mask when handling potting mix, mulch and compost, and when pruning.

n Take care when selecting your plants as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and store all garden chemicals out of their reach.

n After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating.

HOW TO CREATE CALM AND ORDER

There’s no time like the new year to inspire a surge of organisational energy. Storage solutions, clutter-clearing decisions and a few new installations will enhance efficiency, making home life a little easier. Read on for 20 ways to get your year off to a neat start.

PLAN IT TIDY SOLUTIONS
FOLLOW THESE 20 TIPS AND GREET THE NEW YEAR WITH A CLEAN SLATE AND AN ORGANISED HOME

1 Make a list

A list is a magic wand for boosting productivity and motivation, whether it’s from being held accountable or the satisfaction of crossing something off. Keep a wall- or fridge-mounted planner somewhere in sight. This works for weekly chores, life admin and even getting started with your household decluttering. “A wall organiser is a great way to keep track of what you need without having a piece of paper floating around that will end up lost in clutter,” says stylist Samantha Pointon.

2 Stop, drop and stow

A structure in the hallway is an easy win for avoiding lost keys, shoerelated tripping hazards and messy first impressions. “Create a ‘drop zone’ for shoes, keys, bags and jackets by adding a cabinet,” suggests Eve Mizzi, home organiser and founder of Ducks In a Row (yourducksinarow.com.au).

Buy a basket or two Stylish storage will motivate you to reduce the clutter in your living areas. “Baskets are an awesome way to help prevent your house looking cluttered, especially if tucked away on shelves,” says Samantha. “However, you’ve got to keep track of what’s in those baskets, and not fall into the trap of ‘out of sight, out of mind’. Small labels go a long way when trying to remember what’s in them.” A large woven basket is perfect for keeping extra throws and cushions within reach of the sofa, while smaller baskets are handy hideaways for remotes, chargers and other cables.

4 Shelve it

Is your living room overrun with books and magazines? There’s a place for a cute colour-coded book stack, but when it obscures your space, it’s time to invest in a bookcase – and you can use empty shelf space to display favourite objects and photos.

Get hooked

In tight spaces, look up. “Adding hooks to your entryway will get jackets and bags off the floor, and also make good use of vertical storage,” says Chelsea Smith, professional organiser and founder of The Organising Platform (theorganisingplatform. com). “This creates a home for the items you need quick and regular access to, such as the dog lead or reusable shopping bags.”

Hallways can easily become magnets for paraphernalia, but there are some easy fixes to keep all your gear in order

6 Double it up

Refresh your lounge room with new furniture pieces that do twice the work. An ottoman or coffee table that has secret storage can hide away toys, books, coasters and even remote controls when not in use.

7 Divide by three

Keep, donate or ditch? Those are your three options when it comes to clearing out the wardrobe. The best way to begin is to pull everything out, pile it on the bed and consider one garment at a time. Put the ‘donate’ clothes in a bag and – here’s the tricky bit – take it to a charity straightaway!

Look to the seasons

Create space by sorting your wardrobe according to the season. “Consider storing out-of-season items in clearly labelled tubs at the top of your wardrobe,” says Chelsea. Vacuum bags are also perfect for off-season storage.

9 Divide and conquer

In the kitchen, a turntable is a great fridge organiser, while drawer dividers or shallow crates can be used on lower shelves to group similar products together. “Then, when cooking a dish that uses those ingredients, pull out the whole container so you can see what you’ve got,” says Samantha.

10 Clothes encounter

A well-kept wardrobe calls for a longterm strategy. “To declutter your clothes, place all the hangers backwards and only switch them forwards after you have worn something,” suggests Eve. “After six months, see which items you have worn.” Any left hanging backwards should be sold, donated or discarded responsibly.

Fold it right

The way you fold, hang and sort your clothes can lead to wardrobe congestion and even affect how you dress. Hang anything that’s easily wrinkled, but leave knits on a designated shelf. Casual T-shirts, activewear, sleepwear and tracksuits are best folded using the KonMari method – folded and placed vertically –so you can see the options without creating chaos in your drawers.

“Meal planning for the week ahead helps cut down on food waste and saves you a small fortune,” says Chelsea. Your planning toolkit should include good containers with airtight seals, in which you can freeze leftovers for busy nights when you have no time to cook.

Debunk drawer dilemmas

Sort through messy kitchen drawers one by one and bring calm to the chaos by using dividers. “Invest in ones that fit perfectly,” says Samantha Pointon. “Measure before you go or place a piece of paper in the drawer, trace the outline and cut out. Then take the paper to the shops and find a combination of organisers that matches up.”

15

Perfect your pantry

An Instagrammable pantry isn’t as hard as it looks. Pull everything out and wipe down the shelves. Then invest in a set of food containers of varying heights and sizes. Organise the space so the most-used items are at eye level and the heaviest items are on the lower shelves. Use baskets to corral smaller, miscellaneous products.

16 Make a cleaning kit

Reduce the elbow grease needed to keep your bathroom sparkling with daily maintenance. Keep a kit under the vanity with a glass-cleaning spray, disinfectant, a microfibre cloth and a squeegee and adopt a clean-as-you-go mentality.

17 Remember dates

Drawer dividers and cosmetic organisers work well to keep your skincare and make-up in order, but

don’t let expired products waste space. “Mark your make-up and skincare products with the date you purchased them to help you declutter when they expire,” says Eve Mizzi.

18Towel off

Too many towels for that hook on the back of the bathroom door? Then it’s time to buy a towel rail! Heated options also help to dry towels faster. Freestanding models come in a variety of sizes, plug into power points, are an easy fix and ideal for renters.

19Clear the decks

The garage can quickly become an untidy place for items that don’t belong in the house. Set up a system by grouping goods by function using large, multipurpose tubs with labels. “Have a designated tub that stuff goes in when it leaves the house, and then once a week (or month) bring it out with everyone around and see if it should be kept or donated,” suggests Samantha.

20 Bring back order

Lockable steel cabinets in the garage or shed can be used to hide away stacks of items or plastic tubs that were out on open shelves. As well, they can also offer peace of mind by having power tools and other expensive equipment less visible and more secure from theft.

Paint is the perfect decorating go-to when you want to give a room a makeover. Not only can it get you speedy results, applying paint is also a straightforward task for a DIYer with even the most basic skills. But did you know it can be kind to your wallet, too? Here’s how the Taubmans EASYCOAT paint range makes it possible to transform a standard sized room for less than $150*.

PAINT A ROOM

After preparing all surfaces, first hit the ceiling with a couple of coats of EASYCOAT Ceilings in Flat White. This ceiling paint dries to an ultra-flat finish, helping to disguise minor imperfections. Next, turn to EASYCOAT All Walls. It can be tinted to virtually any colour you like, so there’s plenty of choice for your makeover, whether you’re doing a simple refresh or a bright new style in anything from calming blue to a tangerine dream! Choose from a low sheen or semi gloss finish, and apply two coats for great coverage. Finally, tackle the trims with EASYCOAT Doors & Trims in gloss, to give the door, skirtings and window

frame a high-sheen look that’s resistant to everyday knocks.

GOOD TO KNOW

Besides great affordability, all EASYCOAT paints have Microban® technology to help resist bacteria and mould growth**. Plus, they’re low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which means they have minimal impact on the indoor air quality. EASYCOAT Ceilings and All Walls paints also have Sensitive Choice® approval, so can be a better option for people with asthma or allergies.

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. *Product coverage is calculated on an average standard size room (3.2m x 3m) with a standard ceiling (under 2.4m), one window and one door. Results may vary depending on application process and equipment. Offer starts December 1 2022 and ends July 1 2023. The number of litres displayed is based on two coats using the selected paint. Typically, a repainting job will require two coats, but new or dark surfaces may require three where the first coat would be an undercoat. IT’S A WRAP

FAST-TRACK THE POST-CHRISTMAS TIDY-UP WITH THESE EXPERT IDEAS

After the trifle, the seafood, the crackers and the festive cheer comes the great post-Christmas pack away! And while taking down the decorations is never as exciting as putting them up, it’s an essential task, says Amy Revell, owner of The Art of Decluttering (theartofdecluttering. com.au). “It’s an important job, because if you do it right, you will make life easier for yourself next year,” she explains. Read on to learn the professionals’ tricks for bringing some store and order to your Christmas kit.

The f irst step

Before you start, take a look at what was never unpacked to begin with. “When it comes to what you haven’t used this year, ask yourself, ‘Why?’” says Amy. “Have you moved away from that style? Are things broken or don’t match? Let go of anything that’s seen better days or just doesn’t fit your style.” Apart from creating more space in storage, this might spark a smile next year. “You’ll open your Christmas boxes to find only things you love and will use,” she says.

The decorations

Start by stripping the tree, using resealable bags for the tinsel. “Keep each colour of tinsel in a separate bag and squeeze all the air out so they take up minimal space,” says Amy. 

The lights

When it’s time to take down the lights, don’t just grab them off and shove them in a box, warns Anita, who says a rushed job can mean a tangled mess next year. “The key is to wrap them around something so they are easy to unspool and put straight on the tree again,” she says. A container with different spools, such as the Ezy Storage 31L Christmas lighting storage box, will help make this task a breeze,

The tree

For the safekeeping of baubles and precious ornaments, professional organiser and founder of Mise En Place Anita Birges (@mise_en_place_ aus) swears by the Ezy Storage 31L Christmas ornament box with dividers. “The reason the ornament box works well is the dividers can be moved around, so they’re quite versatile,” she says. “If you don’t have much storage space in your home, use an underbed storage box.” For an extra layer of protection, line it with Wrap & Move honeycomb paper wrap.

There’s a common tree-packing error that leads to wasted space and cupboard chaos. “The biggest mistake people make is trying to fit the Christmas tree back into the box it came in,” says Anita. “The way it’s packaged is the way for it to be shipped, not for it to be stored,” she explains. Instead, invest in a dedicated storage box. The Ezy Storage Christmas tree storage box is a good solution as it has wheels and a handle like a suitcase. “It doesn’t have to be a two-person job and you can actually lift it up on its side and store it vertically or horizontally,” adds Anita. A moisture absorber such as Dampfree will reduce the likelihood of mould or mildew inside the box. As you dismantle the tree, use masking tape to label each part, and if necessary, string to hold branches in place.

The gift wrap

The key to storing wrapping paper is to keep the Christmas designs together. A purpose-built storage container like the Ezy Storage 50.5L Christmas wrapping paper box will keep your festive-themed gift wrap safely tucked away. If you appreciate the art of wrapping, consider installing a DIY wrapping station. “Put tension rods in a cupboard and use them as long spools for wrap and ribbon,” suggests Anita. “Another great place to store it is on the back of a door using pocket organisers,” she says. “Cut out the bottoms of a few pockets so that the gift wrap slides in, and keep your tools there, too.” Store a pair of scissors and a sticky-tape dispenser with your kit to save you time when there’s wrapping to be done.

Keep

cool...

... inside your home this summer, with the help of Earthwool® insulation and some straightforward DIY projects

The benefits of home insulation during winter are well known –but did you also know that properly installed insulation can help to lower and maintain your home’s interior temperature, as well as reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions? In hot weather, insulation does a great job of both preventing heat entering the home and keeping cooler air inside. Considering running an airconditioner can burn up a big part of your energy bill, that’s something worth knowing.

TURN TO DIY

If your home doesn’t have adequate insulation, think about scheduling in a summer DIY project with Earthwool® insulation. The super-soft insulation is made using up to 80 per cent recycled glass with a bio-based binder that contains no added formaldehyde, so they’re sustainable and easy to handle. Whatever your project,

whether in the roof, walls or floors, Earthwool® insulation has it covered.

WHERE TO USE

The range includes Earthwool® Ceiling batts, which you can use to insulate your loft space – trapping air movement helps to maintain a more comfortable temperature inside your home. Earthwool® batts can also be used as a top-up layer to improve energy efficiency in the ceiling.

Between 25 and 35 per cent of summer heat gains (and winter heat losses!) can occur via the ceiling*, so this is a task that will pay dividends in improving the comfort of your home year round and reducing energy bills.

GET INSTALLING

Check out the installation videos and factsheets on earthwool.com.au for full DIY installation and safety instructions, and start planning!

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. When installing insulation, follow the instructions and wear long sleeves and trousers, eye protection and a mask. *Source: yourhome.gov.au

Looking for a holiday house for themselves and their two teenage boys, Ann and Chris got more than they bargained for with this vintage beach shack on the mid-north NSW coast. “I didn’t really look at the house!” says Ann. “It was all about the location – I wanted to be able to walk with my longboard to the beach.”

After casting only a cursory glance at the house itself, Ann says it was a shock when she and her husband took possession. Though well loved by the previous owners, the ’60s build had seen decades of hard living and its charm was disguised by worn carpet and lino, dated design choices and fast fixes. “It was a process of stripping things back, while sticking to our budget, because we didn’t have much money after buying it,” says Ann.

While stuck in locked-down Sydney, the couple put their trust in local tradies for the big jobs, refreshing the house with white paint (Dulux Lexicon Quarter) and ripping up the flooring to restore gorgeous tallowwood floorboards. Then it was a matter of replacing the lighting and dressing the space in secondhand, gifted and upcycled furniture. Ann wanted to capture “the holiday vibe of yesteryear”, replicating the charm of childhood holidays in the ’70s.

The result? Waratah Beach Shack (@waratahbeachshack) – a throwback to a simpler past with all the conveniences of modern living.

DINING Windoware matchstick blinds, a Verve Design pendant, jute rug and cane planter set a sand-toned palette in the dining room, with bright colour added via a painting by Suzy Curtis. The biggest change here, says Ann, was replacing a sliding barn door with a lockable swing option, restricting access to the garage and meaning the family can rent out the holiday house while keeping their own belongings secure.

EXTERIOR Lattice had been tacked on to replace the old railing. “I wanted to put a ’60s balcony back on it, so I designed the railing and gave it to Dion [builder Dion Kasas], and he had it fabricated,” says Ann. Dion also replaced the foam matting on the front porch with spotted gum decking. With the addition of a pair of Marquee ‘Verna’ chairs, it’s now a lovely place to sit and admire the view!

KITCHEN The biggest update required to modernise the kitchen was adding a dishwasher, which meant sacrificing four drawers for a slimline 45cm appliance. A plumber connected it, then all Chris had to do was neaten up the end with a melamine panel, cut to size in store. Otherwise, the only changes made were refreshing the walls and floor, and switching ’80s pink plastic cabinet pulls for charming timber ones. “Once we painted the walls, took out the pink handles, which really threw you, and the fake vinyl tiles on the floor, it all seemed to come together,” says Ann.

LIVING ROOM Art is a style focus throughout – the painting above is by a friend of Ann’s, Liz Dunn. “The walls are asbestos, so we weren’t allowed to bang anything into them,” Ann says. The solution was a mix of picture rail hooks and Command hanging strips. A Verve Design rattan lampshade and Windoware matchstick blinds add to the resort-chic theme, with the blinds also providing lovely filtered light.

THIS SAVVY ENSUITE MAKEOVER CASTS A ROSY GLOW

Compact and private, an ensuite can become a little oasis for your eyes only. This is exactly what interior stylist Katy Thomas (@katythomasstudio) was thinking when she embarked on her pinkinspired bathroom upgrade.

“Often, with bathrooms and laundries, people go for the safe option,” says Katy. “I really wanted to inject a bit of personality in my ensuite – I’m not afraid to use a splash of colour and have some fun.”

A blush start

It was a handbasin that kickstarted the ensuite’s look – once Katy spotted and fell in love with the rose-pink Cibo countertop bowl, there was no turning back. “We just had to figure out how it was going to come together with the rest of the space, because that pink basin was definitely going in!” says Katy, who created a moodboard to see what colours would complement the fairy-floss hue.

Brushed brass is a fail-safe match for pink tones and Katy found the perfect tapware solution with a mixer and overhead shower from Caroma’s ‘Luna’ range. A vanity in blond timber veneer completes the soft scheme.

A cost-effective way to add instant charm, EasyCraft panelling was also simple to install. EasyCraft’s wet area internal panelling is able to be used in high moisture areas – although cannot

be applied in direct wet spaces such as showers –and has the added benefit of being paint-ready as soon as it’s in place. “We decided to have a bit of fun with it, and do a pink feature wall,” says Katy, who painted the panelling in Dulux Aquanamel in Pink Lotus.

With an eye for costcutting opportunities, Katy painted the remaining wall tiles white, using Dulux’s Renovation Range. “We only painted the shower tiles, but we left the floor, which seems to work for now,” she says.

For those embarking on painting tiles, be prepared. “It takes patience and it is a process. It’s not one coat of paint and you’re done,” warns Katy. “Tiles can be fiddly, for example painting around fixtures and fittings. However, you save a lot of money and it looks great!”

Keeping the plumbing in place also helped to limit expenses. “If you arrange to have the plumbing moved, it ends up costing a lot more,

which we found out with our other family bathroom renovation,” says Katy.

Styling is king

Finishing touches include a bamboo arched mirror, plush rose towels and a vignette of white vases –all aspects that help link the look. “Don’t let styling be an afterthought,” says Katy. “You don’t have to go over the top, but it helps to add a personal feel to a space.”

Use on-trend colours from the Luna collection to create an everyday luxury bathroom experience

Innovative excellence

Five reasons to upgrade this important bathroom amenity to a Luna Cleanflush toilet suite

Has your bathroom seen better days? Upgrade to the Caroma Luna Collection with its elegant yet cutting-edge design.

1 EASY TO CLEAN

Cleaning the toilet is unlikely to be anyone’s favourite job and we’ve all wished our toilet could clean itself. Caroma’s Cleanflush offers the next best thing. The rimless design leaves no nooks and crannies for germs to hide, while the revolutionary flush and flow technology delivers a powerful and directed flush to effectively clear the bowl with no splashback.

2 A NEW LEVEL OF HYGIENE

Tackle hygiene anxiety head on with GermGard ® by Caroma. GermGard ® is a unique, antimicrobial formula that kills 99 per cent of harmful bacteria it comes into contact with. Injected into the mould of the seat of every Caroma Luna Cleanflush toilet, it helps keep your family safe from nasty germs, giving you and your loved ones peace of mind.

3 INSTALLATION MADE EASY

Caroma’s innovative design features mean it’s simple to upgrade your toilet. And easy installation will benefit you, too – less time on plumbing means more money saved! Caroma’s patented Orbital® and Uni-Orbital®

connectors overcome many common installation issues by extending the suite set out to any position up to a 50mm radius. As well, the adjustable flushpipe (on the Invisi II series) allows your installer to realign the water inlet without having to remove any tiles.

4 QUALITY ASSURED

With over 80 years of experience designing quality bathroom products, Caroma is a brand you can rely on for a toilet that lasts. Caroma products are Australian-designed and engineered, and thoroughly tested for functionality. Caroma pans are tested to twice the Australian standard of 400kg. For added reassurance, they also come with a 20-year warranty.

5 TIMELESS STYLE

For some, good looks can be just as important as functionality. Thankfully, the Caroma Luna range of toilet suites won’t let your design scheme down, with elegant, smooth curves to suit every bathroom. Complement the look with co-ordinating pieces from the Luna bathroom range, including basins and baths, before finishing things off with Luna tapware, showers and accessories in a range of stylish finishes – choose from chrome, satin black, brushed nickel or brushed brass.

Location scouting

Before the pool party invites go out, step one is planning where the pool will go. A solid, level surface is necessary, says Mark Rushton of Bestway pools. “It’s important to measure your available space to help determine which pool style and size suits the area,” he says.

During a hot Australian summer, you either want to know someone with a pool or, better yet, have your own. While many swimming pool options can take months to be realised, a big drawcard of an above-ground pool is the speed with which it can be installed, enabling you to be swimming sooner and make the most of sultry days. To help you dive in, here’s our cheat sheet covering size, style and upkeep.

The location of trees in your yard is another consideration. Driclad’s Brooke Foster says while their shade may keep your pool cooler on hot days, leaves in the water mean maintenance. “Pools should always be installed at least three metres from trees or any climbable objects,” she adds. You’ll also need to allow for access around the perimeter, a pump, and compliant pool fencing with an outwards-opening gate. Whether you prefer glass or metal, there are a range of pool fence panel options, designed for DIY installation, available in store, online or at the Special Orders Desk. Check fencing requirements with your local authority. And be aware that any

pool with a water depth of more than 300mm will likely require a building permit, so consult your local planning authority for pool construction information and ensure your plans will meet regulations.

TIP: To get swimming sooner, organise your fencing materials as early as possible, so they can be delivered and your fencing installed at the same time as your pool.

Water type and care

Choosing a chlorine, saltwater or mineral system comes down to personal preference. Mineral pools are associated with great water quality, yet the high running costs can be a deterrent. “Chlorine is the most popular option but can sometimes cause irritation for those who may have skin allergies,” says Mark.

Saltwater systems require fewer chemicals and chlorine products to maintain water quality, which means less time and effort required to balance the sanitation levels and

less outlay on chemicals, explains Brooke. ”But to prevent and minimise damage, ensure pool accessories, furniture and plants are salt-friendly, and closely follow pool maintenance guides,” she advises.

During summer, pool water should be tested at least once a week, and twice a week during high bather loads, advises Nathan Hallahan of Hy-Clor. “You can take a water sample in the Hy-Clor vial into Bunnings, and use the 4-in-1 test strips at the Hy-Clor kiosk to test the water,” he suggests. “You’ll then receive results and advice on what to do to balance your pool water and keep it sparkling.” For details, visit bunnings.com.au/services/in-store/ pool-water-testing‡. Nathan also recommends maintaining a water level at least halfway up the skimmer box and setting up a preventative maintenance regime. This includes adding a long-life algaecide and phosphate remover to help control algae.

TIP: “Cleaning the pool with a manual vacuum will help you keep on top of debris that can affect the water chemistry,” says Nathan.

Is installation DIY?

With a few capable hands, installation is often straightforward for above-ground pools, with everything you require included in the kit. TIP: A licensed tradie is essential for any hardwired electrical work.

n When using pool chemicals, always follow the instructions, wear the appropriate safety protection and store products out of the reach of children and pets.

n Any plumbing or electrical work must be carried out by a licensed tradie.

Above-ground pools come in a range of sizes, price points, colours, materials and shapes. For a temporary set-up you can pack away in the cooler months, a thick-gauge PVC liner with steel frame is ideal, whereas if you’re after a more permanent fixture, a durable steel-wall or resin model can be a great investment. Here’s our pick of the different styles.

SMALL SPACE AND SPEND

Budget-friendly options for space-challenged backyards start at $499 for a Bestway Steel Pro Max, which comes with a filter pump, ladder and pool cover. For even more compact spots, a great plunge pool solution is the Swim 3.6m x 1.2m Splasher pool, also sold as a kit.

TIP: To keep water clear and dip-ready, have a pool scoop on a telescopic pole nearby.

FOR THE FAMILY

Want to frolic and float on inflatables? Go for a larger oval or rectangular pool, from about 5m long by 3m wide, with a capacity of 13,00018,000 litres. For these, expect to pay from just under $1,000 to upwards of $9,000.

TIP: “To help stop evaporation and keep out debris, shield the pool with a cover when not in use,” suggests Mark Rushton.

SPLURGE WORTHY

A permanent structure offers year-round enjoyment – so look for UV-resistant pool materials. The steel structure of Baracuda’s Laghetto range is concealed by wicker exterior panels, a stylish solution that sits harmoniously within a green space. Available as 4.4m x 2.4m ($16,500) and 5.4m x 3.4m ($21,000), these come with pump, filter, ladder, light, manual cleaning vacuum and DIY installation fittings.

TIP: Add a vibrant splash to your pool party with colour-change floating solar lights.

STORAGE EVERYWHERE!

Rock solid, customisable and with sleek good looks – why restrict Rack It to the garage or shed? Rack It could be just the solution you need for restoring order to the home office, or even as an industrial-style shelf unit in your living space.

Clutter in the garage or shed is a universal issue, but your brand of ‘stuff’ is unique to you. Whether it’s every power tool ever invented, masses of sports equipment or a whole filing cabinet of seeds, Rack It modular storage lets you customise storage to your needs. Start with the basics – 400kg or 1000kg heavy-duty shelves – then build it up with Rack It accessories and PRO. This will create a storage system that restores order to chaos and lets you find everything you need, the moment you need it.

MAKE A PLAN

First step is the Rack It Planner. Use this online tool to map out the space, then drag and drop components so you can see how everything fits together and find solutions to your toughest storage dilemmas. When you’re satisfied, the planner will produce a detailed shopping list, so you can get everything you need to transform your space in a single trip.

GET STARTED

When you need storage woes sorted fast, but you’re not sure where to begin, a Rack It Starter Kit is the ideal first-step solution. Made from heavy duty steel, this solid unit has three, extra deep 600mm wire shelves, each with up to 1000kg load capacity. It’s ideal for everything from paint tins to giant containers of camping gear!

MAKE IT YOUR OWN

The modularity of the Rack It range makes it perfect for tackling your storage needs now and in the future. You can build more shelves onto the starter kit – the double slot system means just one extra upright can give you a whole second bay of storage. Then add the components to meet your needs, such as lockable drawers and cabinets, hooks for hanging tools off the floor, wire or MDF shelves, or pegboards for storing small tools within easy reach. You can even design your own portable, customisable workbench – on castors, so you can move it around, and with your chosen configuration of shallow or deep drawers, shelves and a solid MDF work surface.

PITCH PERFECT

For cooking and dining, the set-up can be as simple as a small two-burner stove, a fold-up table and some chairs. To keep food and drinks chilled, you’ll need a decent-sized esky. “A great option is the Esky Arctic Pro range, which boasts up to seven days’ ice retention and comes in three sizes (50L, 70L and 120L),” says Jason.

Camping can be the best of times – but it takes a bit of planning. While there’s plenty you can’t control (hello, weather!), with the right prep and gear you can make a big difference to the enjoyment factor. Arm yourself with our checklist and get packing for a fun getaway.

Equipment checks

It’s always a good idea to check your gear before you go: no-one wants to wake up on a deflated air mattress, so inflate them to test for leaks. Also worthwhile? Setting up your tent as a ‘how to’ refresher. Plus, check the poles still clip together, there are no tears and you’ve got all the pegs and ropes. Other jobs might include rinsing and airing out water carriers, replacing torch and headlamp batteries, filling up an LPG gas cylinder if you’re taking a barbecue, or ensuring you’re stocked up with butane gas cartridges to use with a camp cooker.

What to pack

The keys to a successful camping trip are research and preparation, says Jason Collis of Coleman. “Some sites are powered and even provide camp kitchen facilities, while others are off grid, so it’s important to know what you will and won’t have access to on site, and pack accordingly,” he explains. Michael Powell of OZtrail also recommends checking site-specific rules and amenities. “Not all sites provide water or allow open fires, so find out before you go.” If fires are allowed, bring your own wood, and if the showers are coin operated, you’ll need a stash of $1 or $2 coins.

A tent is your home away from home, so make sure it’s big enough for your family. “You want a tent that’s roomy enough for your bedding, with space to store bags and essentials,” says Jason. “Generally, for a family of four, we recommend an eight-person tent.” You’ll also need bedding to suit the season, so check the temperature rating on sleeping bags.

Preparing for the worst

“The weather can be the most unpredictable part of camping, so be prepared for what it might throw at you,” says Jason. Pack wet-weather gear, sun-protective clothing and a gazebo for shelter. Use protection from insects – mesh gazebo walls will keep them out – and pack a first-aid kit, insect repellent and outdoor mozzie coils for further peace of mind.

Planning for the best

With a few extras, camping can be super comfortable. Michael suggests enhancing your trip with stretcher beds or self-inflating mattresses, and your

own hot water supply. “Camping is much more enjoyable when you can have a warm shower or don’t have to boil water to do the dishes, so look at options for portable hot water on tap,” adds Michael. “Lanterns that double as Bluetooth speakers and portable power to charge devices and run appliances are also great.”

And the right accessories can turn regular camp dining into a gourmet experience – a fish griller or deep pan will take your barbecue repertoire well beyond steak and snags.

Getting it there

Packing up the car for a camping trip can feel a bit like a game of Tetris. Use roof racks to spread the load, or a trailer for larger items. Maximise space with lidded plastic tubs you can stack and fill with cooking gear and food, and decant toiletries and dishwashing detergent into travelsize containers. Plan your meals, so everything you pack gets used and chilled items are kept to a minimum. Vacuum bags are also fantastic space savers – use them for your clothes, pillows and towels.

STEPS TO A BBQ REFRESH!

During summer the barbecue gets plenty of use, but it can end up the Cinderella of your outdoor setting, desperately in need of a spruce-up. Follow these five fixes to give your barbecue a new lease of life.

1Thorough clean

Keep your barbecue in tip-top shape and you’ll be enjoying delicious results for years to come For an extra-clean finish, and to deal with baked-on build-up around grill plates, use heavy-duty barbecue wipes and the combination of low heat and a grill brush UPDATE IT ALFRESCO COOKING

2Change of scene

Moving your barbecue’s location can revamp your outdoor area. Bunnings barbecue buyer Matthew Hoffman says it should be under cover from the elements, with at least one metre of clearance on all sides of any flammable materials. “It needs to be level, stable, with natural ventilation,” he adds. Enhance the space with a light, some chairs or a dining setting.

SAFETY TIP: “Perform a soapy water test for leaks on all gas connections before use,” says Matthew. Smear connections with soapy water and turn on the gas – if bubbles appear, there’s a leak.

A deep clean will improve your barbecue’s cooking capabilities. “Use a warm soapy water solution to clean exterior surfaces and lightly stained areas, and for more heavily discoloured areas, particularly around the grills, use heavy-duty barbecue wipes, which cut through grease to restore the barbecue’s shine,” advises Aarefa Nisaa Ashad of Char-Griller. “Briefly igniting your barbecue on a low heat setting while using a grill brush can loosen food residue on the grates and plates and aid its removal,” says Aarefa. “When cast iron grates and plates have cooled, remove them for a soapy water scrub. Once thoroughly dry, coat them in oil to help seal the surface and prevent rust build up.” To make future clean-ups easier, Aarefa recommends placing a fat-absorbing product into the grease tray and cup. For charcoal models, use a similar cleaning method. “A great trick to speed up the process is using a vacuum to remove ash build up from inside the grill,” she adds. 5 60 bunnings.com.au | bunnings | bunnings

The power of paint

A fresh coat of paint can work wonders to transform a tired, rust-affected barbecue, as Bunnings Workshop community member Monique (@moniquecole1990) found. A thorough clean with hot soapy water (including degreaser) was her first step, followed by a scrub with steel wool to target rust spots. “Once dry, I wiped it with a microfibre cloth and mineral turpentine to ensure good paint adhesion, and covered glass to protect it from overspray,” she says. Monique then sprayed her barbecue with three coats of White Knight heat-resistant paint. “It’s an easy project to try and can save buying a new barbecue,” she says.

SAFETY TIP: Use heat-resistant paint on all surfaces that will be exposed to heat, including handles, but not on hotplates or food contact surfaces.

4New accessories

A few additions can expand your barbecue repertoire and impress guests. “Most gas barbecues and some charcoal barbecues have provisions to add a rotisserie, enabling you to cook roasts, and the addition of a rotisserie basket is great for vegetables and smaller cuts of meat,” says Matthew. If you want to experiment with new cooking styles, Aarefa suggests trying a smoking tube, or a pizza stone stacker to create authentic Neapolitan pizzas. Learn to perfect cooking times with a smart wireless thermometer, which allows you to monitor meat and grill temperatures via a smartphone app. Another handy addition is a gas safety gauge. “It shuts off gas flow if a major leak is detected and indicates the gas level in your LPG cylinder, so you’re never caught out with an empty cylinder,” explains Matthew.

5

Replacement parts

If you’ve had your barbecue for a while, give it a thorough inspection to see if any components need to be replaced. “Grills, hotplates, flame tamers and burners can be purchased in store, while burner knobs, trolley wheels and most other parts can be ordered from the supplier through the Special Orders Desk,” advises Matthew. “Before replacing parts, ensure the LPG cylinder and any electrical connections are off. To get the right replacement for the burner, check if it has a cast iron or stainless steel tube and consult your manual for the correct removal and installation procedure.”

1 Lay a drop sheet over your work area. Remove the vanity’s drawers and doors, unscrewing the hinges and handles with a screwdriver. Mask any hardware that can’t be removed with painter’s tape. Tip: For a mounted vanity, mask around the wall and cover the floor with a drop sheet.

2 Using sugar soap wipes, clean the vanity all over to remove grease, dirt and dust. Wipe dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Tip: Wipe over the roller covers to be used with a clean, damp microfibre cloth to remove any debris and loose fibres.

3 Apply specialty primer with a mini microfibre roller and leave to dry thoroughly. If the original surface is still visible, repeat for a second coat. Tip: For drawers, prime and paint the fronts and around the edges. For cabinet doors, prime and paint both sides.

1 Uni-Pro ‘Little Ripper’ 4mm nap 100mm microfibre mini roller set, $8.25, I/N: 0022470.

2 Dulux ‘Renovation Range’ deep base cabinet doors paint in Satin, $86.50/1L, I/N: 0116473, primer, $69.90/1L, I/N: 0116494, and clear coat sealer in Satin, $79.90/1L, I/N: 0116488.

3 Selleys ‘Sugar Soap’ wall cleaning wipes, $5.50/pack of 25, I/N: 1210330. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

4 Apply two coats of specialty paint with a clean roller, leaving to dry after each, sealing the roller in plastic wrap between coats to prevent it drying out. Tip: Paint each section, then smooth over the surface again in one direction with the semi-dry roller.

5 Prepare specialty sealer by following the package instructions, pouring in the additive and stirring well. Using a clean mini roller, apply the sealer and leave to dry overnight, then repeat for a second coat, again leaving to dry thoroughly.

6 Use a screwdriver to reattach the handles and hinges, and reinstall the drawers and doors. Note: This paint method can be used on laminate, melamine or timber and doesn’t require sanding.

n Always paint in a well-ventilated area, covering the surrounding area with a drop sheet.

n Dispose of paint equipment and empty containers responsibly, recycling where possible, and never pour leftover paint down the drain.

HUNG VERTICALLY AND HINGED FOR EASY FOLDING, THESE LASER-CUT FENCE EXTENSIONS MAKE A VERSATILE AND STYLISH SLIDING ROOM DIVIDER

Project, photography and styling NATASHA DICKINS

Allow a room to do double duty with a screen that sections off space for a home office or playroom. Trim standard reconstituted bamboo panels to suit your space and hang from a track. We added moulding around the first panel to make it thicker to house the pivoting hardware that fixes it to the top track and the floor, while allowing it to swing back against the wall.

MEASURE & CUT

Measure the space height, subtract 60mm clearance, and cut four 2400mm x 500mm bamboo panels to length using a circular saw with a straightedge guide.

Cut 30mm from both sides of each panel. For a wider opening, like ours, swap the 1830mm track from the kit for a 2500mm track and cut to size. With a handsaw, from 8mm coverstrip moulding, cut two long strips the panel length. Subtract 20mm from the width of the panels to cut two top strips and two base strips. From 4mm coverstrip moulding, cut 12 strips the width of the panels.

1 Apply adhesive to secure 4mm strips along the top and base of three panels, on both faces, and clamp to dry. On panel 1, secure the 8mm strips on both faces, with the long strips on the same sides, making the edge of the panel 26mm thick to allow for the pivots.

2 Smooth all over with 180-grit abrasive paper, rounding the edges slightly. Secure 8mm cover buttons in the existing leg holes with adhesive. Apply two coats of liquid wax with a clean cloth, leaving to dry after each. Tip: The strips and cover buttons are buffers to allow for the hinge gaps.

3 On panel 1, at the base, centre the floor pivot bracket on the corner edge to mark the holes and use a 16mm spade bit to drill the pivot hole to 18mm deep. Pre-drill remaining holes with a 3mm bit to secure with 19mm supplied screws. Tip: Hold the drill straight to ensure the holes are centred.

• Timbers vary by state and territory; contact your local store for further information.

5 Set out all four panels, with panel 1 pivots on the left, and panels 2 and 4 wheel brackets on the top right. Measure 300mm and 900mm from the ends to install four 35mm x 28mm hinges, flush with the edges, between 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 4. Pre-drill with a 2mm bit to secure the supplied screws with a screwdriver.

6 Slide the track pivot onto the end of the track; tighten with the supplied flat spanner. Slide on the trolleys and the rubber bumper to the opposite end. Clamp the track to the beam; secure with supplied pan head screws. Tip: If using a longer track, pre-drill holes 400mm apart with a 5mm bit before installing with suitable screws.

7 Use a level to line up the floor pivot with the track pivot. Pre-drill the holes with a 3mm bit and secure with 19mm supplied screws. Use wedges to elevate and position panel 1 on the floor pivot, hook the panel 2 bracket onto the first wheel carriage, tighten the lock nut and close the stopper. Repeat with panel 4.

4 Separate the brackets from the track pivot and trolleys.

On panel 1, centre the pivot bracket on the corner, pre-drill the sides with a 3mm bit, securing with 19mm supplied screws. Drill the top with a 3.5mm bit, securing with supplied hex head screws. Position trolley brackets on panel 2 and 4, flush with the ends and pre-drill, securing with supplied hex head screws.

Keep in mind...

n Ensure the header will support the 20kg total weight of the panels. Do not climb or swing on the finished assembly.

n When using a drill or circular saw to cut timber, always wear a mask, ear and eye protection and work in a well-ventilated area.

n Trim equally from the opposite edges of the panels to keep the cut-out pattern centred.

n Enlist a second pair of hands to help lift and hold the panels while positioning them on the wheel carriages.

It’s one thing for your dream home to look perfect. But when you feel it, that’s modern design on a whole different level. More space for a full house of full hearts. A feeling found.

oncrete lends a richly textured, industrial look to a space, but it’s incredibly heavy and can be messy to DIY. For a similar look, solid doors are strong enough for a table and bench seats while ensuring there is enough sturdiness for screws to attach the metal legs. And concrete-effect paint not only looks great, it’s so much fun to use – just like icing a cake!

Bench seats are made by cutting a second door in half lengthways

1 With a circular saw, cut one door down to 1800mm for the tabletop. Cut another door to 1600mm and in half lengthways for bench seats. Tip: Match the distance of the blade from the edge of the base plate to clamp a length of DAR timber as a straightedge for the saw.

2 On both sides of the tabletop and seats, mark curves at the corners using a pencil with the lid of an aerosol can as a template. Note: Rounding the corners removes sharp edges and helps to transform the doors into furniture.

3 Cut the corners with a jigsaw, working from the outsides into the centre. Flip to check the curves match the underside marks and trim as needed. Smooth around the corners using an orbital sander with 120-grit abrasive disc.

DIY TOOLKIT

4 Working on both sides, remove the sharp edges using a trim router with round-over bit, then sand all over with 180-grit. Wipe all over with a damp cloth to remove dust. Tip: If you don’t have a trimmer, round over the edges with 120grit and finish with 180-grit.

5 Apply a thick coat of primer all over with a long-nap roller and leave to dry. Working on one piece at a time, using a clean roller cover and tray, apply a thick cake-icing layer of concrete-effect paint over the top and around the edges.

6 Texturise with a steel trowel held at 80°, using broad strokes, then wipe around the base to remove drips. Leave to dry for two hours, then repeat for another two coats, leaving to dry overnight. Tip: Wash the trowel between coats to prevent debris from scratching the surface.

7 Using 600-grit abrasive paper, lightly smooth over the top and around the sides in a circular motion. Use the flat face of the trowel to polish the top and sides to a glassy finish. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Tip: More rubbing results in more texture.

8 Seal with a water-based varnish using a clean roller, leaving to dry. Lightly smooth over with 180-grit, wipe away dust, then apply two more coats, leaving to dry thoroughly after each coat. Note: The first coat looks like a milky film, but the texture will reappear as it dries.

9 Lay down a drop sheet, then clean the legs with solvent and lightly apply three coats of spray paint, leaving to dry after each. Centre table legs 200mm from the ends, pre-drill holes with a 3mm bit to 25mm deep and secure with 35mm screws. Centre the bench legs 100mm from the ends, pre-drill and secure with screws.

Fabulous foliage

Add drama to your garden with striking forms and colours

Yucca

Sword-like leaves of this succulent’s variegated forms range from cream to grey-green and yellow. Spikes of white bell-like blooms appear from late summer to autumn. Ideal as a lone feature specimen, or plant a few for drama. It tolerates dry conditions once established.

Alocasia

Affectionately known as ‘elephant ears’, this stalwart makes a great statement piece in pots or garden beds. While many new hybrids don’t have the elephant-ear-shaped foliage, they’re bold and beautiful! Plant in shade or dappled sun, with preferably bright filtered light.

Cordyline

This hardy perennial comes in a wide array of sizes and colours, including green, pink, red and orange, with variegated forms, too. Its large, strappy leaves make it perfect for many types of garden. Depending on the variety, it can be grown in a range of climates, from tropical to cool temperate.

Dianella

Low-growing, clumping perennials, variegated dianellas have strappy foliage in silver-green with white margins. Sprays of small starshaped blue/purple blooms appear in spring and summer, followed by glossy berries. It’s ideal for edges and rockeries, or mass planted in shady or exposed sites.
