YOUR DIY PROJECTS

Before

We’re all about the cosy in this issue, but we’re looking beyond just heaters to help our home feel toasty. Check out ‘A Winter’s Tale’ from page 15 – we’ve pulled together rich colour, pretty rugs and tactile textures for a look that oozes warmth. Of course, we have heating too, for every room – turn to page 49 onwards for more. Plus, if you run a home-based business or WFH, our clever tips, on page 27, are just in time for EOFY. @theshackreno

Aleasha, NSW

After featuring and falling in love with the renovated bedrooms, hallway and outdoor spaces of @theshackreno in our April issue, we were excited to see the latest completed project in Nicole’s coastal home – the fresh and fabulous living room! The room was blessed with original wall panelling and timber floors, which Nicole and husband Tim revived with Dulux wall paint and Feast Watson’s Liming White on the floor. A built-in TV cabinet, which can convert to a reading nook, takes full advantage of the deep corner space. Rattan accents add coastal charm to create a stylish and relaxed beach-chic living space.

SHOW OFF YOUR HARD WORK WITH #DIYJULY

If you’ve revamped a room, created a kitchen, rescued a ‘robe, given your laundry some love or tackled pretty well any interiors project that you’re particularly proud of, here’s your chance to share it with the world. Keep an eye out for Bunnings’ DIY July, a whole month when we celebrate the magic of a great makeover, and when we’ll be hunting Australia-wide for stunning projects big and small. News Take it outside

Tick off this to-do list for tiptop outdoor areas. For more on what to do in the garden during May and June, go to bunnings.com. au/garden-diaries

SNUGGLE UP THIS WINTER

Time to plant broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, leeks, peas and cauliflower. Dig in compost and organic matter before planting.

For product details (and more rugs!) see page 15.

Multicrop ‘Multiguard’ snail and slug killer, $7.33/1kg, I/N: 2980023 Help protect your vegies and flowering plants from snails and slugs by sprinkling bait around plants and garden beds. Remember to keep snail bait out of the reach of children and pets.

PowerFeed ‘Pro Series’ roses and flowers concentrate, $14.20/1.2L, I/N: 0116790 Give Mum a gift that keeps on growing with a potted chrysanthemum, moth orchid or cyclamen. Add in liquid fertiliser to keep it blooming.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

When running a business from home, tool and tech security is imperative. Turn to page 27 for more advice on setting up a home office

Follow these tips to keep work equipment safe from theft

1 Eco-Organic Garden ‘Slasher’ ready to use organic weedkiller, $12.98, I/N: 0189791

Ozito PXC 2 x 18V brushless blower vacuum and mulcher, $189/skin only (battery and charger sold separately), I/N: 3381093

Get on top of weeds in garden beds by treating them with organic weedkiller. It is not selective, so take care when spraying near plants you don’t want harmed, and always read the label.

Put fallen sticks and leaves to good use by collecting them for the compost bin. For large areas, consider the convenience of a blower vac.

Home Grown indoor umbrella adjustable grow light, $19.90, I/N: 0191120 (plant and pot not included) If there’s not enough light inside your home for your plants, use a grow light. The LED light above is energy efficient and is specifically engineered to stimulate plant growth indoors.

Feeling cosy and comfortable is about more than just switching on the heater. One way to cultivate a sense of cosiness is by softening hard surfaces underfoot – layer rugs to add texture and create a cocooning corner within a larger room. Shop our newest range of luxurious and easy-to-layer rugs in store and online.

Put tools away, out of sight. Because most tool theft is opportunistic, having them hidden from view is your best defence. Use an engraving tool to etch your name, licence number and contact details on all of your tools. When it’s not in use, store equipment in a lockable box either on your ute, truck or on site.

Secure large and heavy items with a steel cable to prevent them from being snatched. Garages and sheds are common targets for thieves – if you store your tools in either, install security cameras nearby. 

Kincrome pen engraving tool, $39.85, I/N: 6270112

Master Lock 1.8m x 10mm loop ended braided steel cable, $29.90, I/N: 4211129

P&N 6mm diamond core drill bit, $16.45, I/N: 5710032 Found a ceramic pot you love, but it doesn’t contain any drainage holes? You can carefully drill your own using a diamond drill bit. Alternatively, insert the original plastic pot into the decorative one and use it as a ‘cache-pot’.

Swap the endless commute for an amble through the garden with this idea for a backyard home office

T

An easy-build custom desk offers plenty of surface space on which to work, without being too bulky for the room

PAULA homeowner

here are plenty of benefits in working from home and, for this Brisbane family, it’s even more appealing with a garden office. The block – home to Paula, her husband Paul and their teenage children – offered ample space for a detached office among the trees. It’s designed as a multi-use room: Paul works in it during the week, while on weekends Paula can use it as an art studio. Architectural in its simplicity, the steel-clad compact cube is in keeping with its bush setting. “It has such a beautiful natural outlook,” says Paula. “Paul often sends me a photo message during the day of birds, a wallaby or a lizard he’s seen out the window while working.” Paul worked with his builder brother Matt to complete the studio, which includes a three-square-metre deck, in just under a month. “It’s a wonderful asset to have,” says Paula. “Working out there provides Paul with separation from the house, and the comforts of home are just a stroll away.” “It gets so much use, even on weekends. I like to paint in there and the kids love to use it when they want a quiet space”

Paula homeowner

Note If planning to build a backyard office, first check with your local authority as development permits may apply

Desk job To suit the compact floor area, Paul built a desk for the office with an off-the-shelf SpecRite finger-jointed beech panel, which was the perfect size for the desktop. For the base, several lengths of Tasmanian oak were cut to size and joined together to create square frame legs. The table was then sanded and given two coats of clear varnish. For year-round comfort and connectivity – a must for any WFH situation – an electrician installed air-conditioning and fitted the office with wi-fi.

Going bush Paula’s brief for the studio/office was “a simple box in the backyard that was practical and a little creative,” she says. “We wanted it to have a different finish from the house so opted for corrugated steel with a plain zinc finish that wouldn’t need repainting.” The three-square-metre studio was topped with a gently sloping skillion roof and sits up off the ground to meet a raised hardwood deck. A pergola-style roof helps frame the space, as do painted timber planks, which wrap around its base. For a similar colour, try Dulux Colorbond Monument. }

The mix of old and new makes it feel really inviting,” says Paula. Below: Flexi Storage ‘Clever Cube’ 360mm x 330mm x 330mm inserts in Water Hyacinth, $15.75 each, I/N: 2582736. Council approvals Generally, you can run a home business without local council approval provided your operations won’t impact your neighbours. However, the rules vary between councils and, if your home-based business includes food-related products, you may need additional permits and approvals. Be sure to check with your local council about restrictions that apply to your type of business and your area.

Space makers If you have the room, a dedicated zone that you can close off is ideal, allowing you to shut the door on work at the end of the day. Depending on your needs, this could be anything from a desk area in a spare room to a dedicated study, converted garage or purpose-built studio (see page 22 for our story on a custom-built home office). Will customers need to visit you? In that case a separate entrance that saves people traipsing through your home to your study could be an important addition.

Store and order Furniture-wise, if you spend any amount of time at your desk, you’ll need a chair you can position at the right height for the kind of work you do, good task lighting and plenty of storage. For accounting purposes you’ll need to hold on to most records (such as invoices and receipts) for five years from the date you lodge your tax return, but the good news is these can now be kept in digital format, reducing the amount of paper in a typical home office. Decluttering expert Georgie Rees of Clutterfly (clutterfly.com.au) says if your home doesn’t have space to accommodate a work area, it’s particularly important to be organised. “It’s not uncommon to use the kitchen table as a temporary desk space,” she says. “This does mean our work items need somewhere to go when we pack up at the end of each day.” Georgie suggests an accessible cupboard to hold things overnight.

4

Safes and secure Depending on the nature and size of your homebased business, you may have to invest in extra security measures. Screen windows so your gear is out of easy sight of thieves, choose strong door and window locks and, for extra security, consider handy burglar deterrents such as motion-activated cameras and lighting. An alarm that can be linked to a monitoring service, particularly if your job requires you to be out and about a lot, is worthwhile. Secure tools in lockable cabinets and essentials in a sturdy safe – if you can have one fitted in the wall or floor and screened from casual view, even better. It’s also good practice to speak with an insurance broker, as most home policies don’t cover business equipment and activities. Business insurance is usually a tax-deductible expense.

Taxing questions

Accountant Holly Shoebridge, director of Oceans Accounting & Advisory (oceansaccounting.com.au), says anyone setting up a business needs to establish clear procedures from the start. Keeping good records makes it easier when it comes to quarterly tax reports. The first step is to set up a separate bank account for your business, which helps to develop an auditable financial trail and provides boundaries between personal and business spending. For business-related expenses, any deductions are required to have a direct connection to actual business income – check with your tax agent or accountant exactly what is allowable and keep receipts you can produce when required. Small business owners sometimes think of tax-deductible expenses as free money received back at tax time, but the true cash benefit is going to be relative to your personal income tax rate, which will differ from business to business and may only be 20-30 per cent of the full expense amount paid. “It’s a common misconception,” explains Holly. “Cash flow is king – you never spend for the sake of a tax deduction.” The ATO website (ato.gov.au) has information on record keeping and income, and deductions for specific occupations, which can give you a good grounding, but for expert advice pertaining to your exact circumstances, always consult a qualified professional. At tax time, Holly advises speaking to a registered tax agent to get tailored advice on your unique business circumstances.* ◆

T

he right outdoor lighting can work wonders in the garden. “It can reinforce an ambience, create drama and bring life and vigour to an otherwise lifeless space,” says Adam McDonald of Impressions Landscape – Design (impressionslandscape.com.au). With careful planning, a thoughtful lighting scheme will sprinkle a little magic over your backyard, as well as help you navigate it safely. } bunnings |

Safety tip All hardwired electrical work must be carried out by a licensed tradie

Highlighting individual plants can turn them into focal points and throw light on other structures, such as pools and their surrounds

Ponder the ponds Lights around pools and water features help transform a body of water into a wonderland after hours – as well as increasing the safety of your midnight dip. In-ground lights are ideal to light the way, while pool lights effectively illuminate the water source. “The amount of lighting in the pool will depend on its size and shape – a small pool may only need one light, but a large and irregular-shape pool may need three or more,” explains Adam McDonald. Don’t forget to use lights to highlight any attached water features or structural elements and, for real wow factor, consider lighting up the landscape around it too – the visual impact is worth it. Always consult an electrician prior to pool installation, as they will be able to best advise what’s possible, especially for in-pool lighting.

Light the way Lights can help you safely navigate your way through the garden, but you needn’t be blinded with glare. “Lights such as path bollards, wall and step lighting and even downlights can be used to reinforce the usability of a garden,” says Adam. Position solar bollards or lanterns along a path to create a statement walkway, or consider using them to illuminate surrounding garden beds – sufficient to highlight where you’re walking, while making a feature of the adjacent plants. In-ground LED lights are smart-looking options, but for a similarly eye-catching feature, try strip lighting. “Strip lighting on the right project – under stair nosing, around garden bed edges or retaining walls – can be both functional and statement driven,” says Adam.

Strip lighting is a stylish way to make steps easier to see at night

Uplighting onto trees creates a bewitching display of light and shadow

“The key to a good lighting scheme is in the design and planning. This ensures all areas are well considered and that provisions can be made early so that access and installation are not an issue” Adam McDonald landscape designer

or track lights are a great design-conscious approach that will provide a comfortable and softer setting for task-focused outdoor spaces,” explains Adam.

Duty calls Task lights need to be practical, but there’s no reason why they can’t be stylish, too. “Rather than solving a problem with a garish white light, a combination of layered light variation using one or more ornamental fittings can be used for a more

design-driven lighting approach,” says Adam. Look for fittings where the housing or finish is a feature in itself. To incorporate them into the existing landscape, partner with other light sources to create a complete lighting effect for the whole space. “Downlights, outdoor pendants

Take control Smart lighting puts you in control of your outdoor lights with a click of a button (or a scroll on your smartphone). “There is safety in knowing your home can be lit up with such ease,” says Dayna. “You can link systems to voice commands, to turn on when the sun sets or when you arrive home, or to create custom colour schemes.” Smart lighting is available for most outdoor light forms, from string lights to spotlights. They are often ‘plug and play’ (meaning easy to install yourself) and can be controlled via Bluetooth or wi-fi.

Holman Bluetooth garden light controller with inbuilt transformer in Warm White, $110, I/N: 0011684

In the spotlight Outdoor features and focal points deliver character, so it’s a shame to lose them in darkness. “Spotlights can be used to cast a strong beam of light directly onto an object, plant or tree, to help bring features and elements to life,” says Dayna WalkerMathews of Holman Industries. A single spike light is ideal for throwing upward light onto a tree; position it to capture the beauty of the trunk and the canopy. A series of spotlights also works well to highlight trees or plants along a perimeter or path. “The best designs combine small and large spotlights, each adjusted at slightly different angles, to add depth and create ambient lighting,” she says. Adam adds, “Use spotlights to highlight features, but also to cast alluring shadows to help create a relationship between the light source and darkness.” This increases the sense of drama, adds depth and helps to enhance colours and textures. }

Colour your world Lights can be used to add character or a sense of whimsy to your space. Wrap fairy lights around tree branches, use them as a veil over the pergola, or secure them along decking rails – ensure they’re waterproof and designed for outdoor use. Warm white string lights create a classic ambience,

while coloured lights add an element of fun to any outdoor area. If experimenting with colour, especially for parties, look for lights you can easily adjust. “RGB lighting systems are controlled via an app, so you can easily change up the lighting to suit your mood or create a more dynamic display,” says Dayna Walker-Mathews.

Safe and sound Though a beautiful lighting scheme can transform your garden into a work of art, practical security lighting is still important, offering a clear path and peace of mind. For a better sense of security, install motion-activated sensor lights around entrances and access points, like the front door, side gates and garage. Consider their height and placement, as tree branches and pets can easily set them off. You can also adjust the length of ‘on’ time, particularly if there is a distance between the front gate or carport and the front door. ◆

Shayden and Georgia Whipps (moochstyle.com) redesigned their laundry with Kaboodle ‘Modern’ profile cabinetry in Spiced Oak and Macaroon

Plan it Design a laundry

2

Get the lay of the land Keep the floor plan streamlined and simple. “A galley layout is our go-to design for a laundry,” suggests interior designer Sarah Jobse of Oak & Orange. “Position your washer/dryer, laundry tub and cupboards or drawers all in a row. If room permits, add in bench space above your cupboards or drawers and don’t forget a generous broom cupboard tall enough to fit the ironing board.”

3

Words Holly Byrne. Photography Shayden Whipps, styling Georgia Whipps. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

Form and function

Shop around Pick your appliances – or measure your existing ones. “This should be one of the first steps when designing your laundry so cabinetry can be built to fit around it,” says Alisa. “Plus, if you opt for concealed appliances, you’ll need to allow for adequate ventilation and an exhaust fan.” Front-loading washers and heatpump dryers tend to be more energyefficient, although they often carry a higher price tag, so it pays to do your appliance research before investing. 

1

Create a good-looking and practical space with our 12 tips to a better laundry

W

ith all the time we spend washing, scrubbing, ironing and folding, a hardworking and good-looking space in which to do it really isn’t too much to ask for. From planning tips to must-haves for your shopping list, we’ve rounded up the top 12 features of a laundry you’ll love to spend time in.

1

Think location The planning and placement of your laundry within the home are really important. If it’s too close to bedrooms or entertaining areas, the noise of your appliances may limit the hours you can use them. “Station it near the rear or back-entry mudroom, or if you’re living in a small apartment, consider integrating the laundry into a bathroom or kitchen away from living areas,” says Alisa Fraser of interior design duo Alisa & Lysandra. Where possible, outdoor access directly to the clothesline is ideal.

4

Plan your storage Clever storage is the key to keeping chaos under control. “Prioritise space for big items such as brooms, vacuums and the ironing board,” says Alisa Fraser, who also recommends overhead storage options for keeping cleaning agents out of reach in family homes. “And don’t forget to incorporate drawers for small items.”

5

Build it in “We love in-built laundry hampers,” says Sarah Jobse, who suggests a deep, multisectioned drawer – preferably close to the washing machine. Keep a collapsible or stackable laundry basket in each bedroom so, when not in use, it’s easy to store it out of sight.

Shaw & Mason WELS 4-star, 7.5L/ min laundry set in Black, $62.95, I/N: 0086940

Tap into quality In a hardworking space, it’s best to buy once and buy well. “Choosing the right tapware should be based on quality, design, functionality and cost,” says Alisa. “In terms of function, consider pull-out taps for total efficiency when the sink is full and for awkward items like buckets and brushes.”

8

6 Shaw & Mason WELS 3-star 9L/min 600mm chrome plated laundry arm, $34.31, I/N: 5001622. 7 Caroma ‘Luna’ WELS 4-star 7.5L/ min lever laundry tap set, $299, I/N: 0180865†. 8 Methven ‘Gaston’ WELS 4-star 7.5L/min pull down sink mixer, $308, I/N: 5003400.

7

Make brave choices “The laundry is a room where you can be bold and have a little fun,” suggests Sarah. Whether it’s a cabinetry or paint colour you haven’t been game to use yet, or black tapware that may not work in the kitchen, this is the place to give it a go.

Put on a floor show Go for something hardy, water resistant and slip proof underfoot. “A matt finish or slight textured tile is a great option for this,” says Alisa. “Patterned floor tiles are very popular at present,” suggests Sarah. “You can have more confidence in going bold in the laundry as it’s not a key room like the kitchen.” While tiles are one of the best options, they’re not the only one. Vinyl (sheet, planks or tiles) is watertight and hardy enough to take a beating – great if your laundry doubles as a mudroom. Consider scale Don’t skimp on size when it comes to your laundry sink – you’ll want to be able to handwash bulky items, fill a bucket and have ample room for soaking dirty laundry. “It should be larger and deeper than what you have in the kitchen, so a 45-litre tub is a good size,” says Sarah. If bench space is really tight, opt for a skinny version, or an under-mounted sink that can also save a little room. Everhard ‘Excellence’ 42L squareline utility sink, $424, I/N: 0191736†

Splash out Combine practicality with aesthetics on the splashback. From glass and VJ panels to tiles of all shapes and sizes, the possibilities are endless. As a laundry splashback is generally quite small, it’s a chance to blow the budget on a finish you love.

11

Get the hang of it Not everything is dryer-friendly, so it’s a good idea to incorporate some indoor drying options. It could be as simple as a single hanging rail mounted under overhead cabinetry. A drying cabinet is another option, sitting discreetly on the wall when not in use, while a retractable micro clothesline rolls neatly out of the way. “There are some great inventive options, such as pulldown drying racks,” adds Sarah. Handy DIYers could even make their own (see Read it!).

Lighten up Layer general, task and ambient lighting for the best effect. “Think track lighting on the ceiling, add task lighting through integrated LED strips underneath cabinetry, and a small illuminated wall sconce to make the space feel more inviting, brighter and to create a pleasing atmosphere,” says Alisa. All wet zones have special regulations for electrical fittings, so always call on a licensed sparkie to do the work. ◆ Brilliant ‘Metta’ interior wall light in Antique Brass, $22.90, I/N: 0014351 (globe sold separately)

SENSIBLE STYLE Of course, practicality is high on the must-have list and you’ll need a sink big enough to cope with your household’s needs. The ‘Eureka’ cabinet has a generous 45-litre tub, and includes a handy child-resistant lock, while the ‘Utility’ has a 42-litre tub; both are big enough to

HANGING OUT

LAUNDRY LOVE Lighten the load this winter with help from the Hills range of laundry products

G

et ahead of the winter blues this year and sort out your laundry by stocking up on the right laundry products. From portable clotheslines to innovative ironing boards, the Hills laundry collection has your washing day covered. A whopping 21m of line space makes light work of drying bed linen – whatever the weather

Make the most of the elusive winter sun with outdoor hanging options that can be easily hidden away when wet weather strikes. The Planter Retracting Clothesline is perfect for small spaces, balconies and courtyards. Its innovative design features a three-line retracting clothesline hidden within a modern self-watering 15L wall mounted planter box. Each line extends up to 6.3m with an ergonomic twist dial to control the tension - that’s 19m of drying space, enough to hang multiple king-sized sheets.

ON THE MOVE Bridging the gap between outdoor clotheslines and indoor airers, the 21m Portable Clothesline in Woodland Grey is built with the same material construction as an outdoor line, to make it fully weatherproof. Equipped with two premium wheels on one side, zipping the clotheslines between the indoors and outside is a breeze, and it folds flat for simple storage. Sheets and towels a worry? It has a load capacity of 30kg and each line stretches 1.8m. Pair that with four adjustable height levels and all drying needs are met. 1. Hills 19m planter retracting clothesline, $129, I/N: 0253773. 2. Hills 21m portable clothesline in Woodland Grey, $199, I/N: 0194512.

INSIDE JOBS

THE HARD YARDS

On wet and wild days, an indoor airer is the only option. Be prepared with the 18m Premium Winged Airer, which is built to last you for years. The aluminium design is compact and lightweight, including a storage lock so you can move and store it with ease. If the 18m of drying space wasn’t enough, it also features sock rail hangers for smaller and more delicate items, and anti-slip feet means it’ll hold still wherever it’s used.

When it comes to the big jobs in washing, such as sports gear, dirty towels, bathmats and work clothes, the Hills Premium Aluminium Laundry Hamper is your new best friend. Big enough to hold multiple wash loads at once with 105L capacity, this hard worker is made using ‘Hills Fresh’ antibacterial and odour control heavy-duty fabric, and an aluminium frame to help keep it together.

HOT STUFF When it comes to the ironing, the Hills Large Ironing Board has your back. The board height adjusts from 75 to 93cm to suit all users, and the large paddle beneath the board makes switching up the heights (or folding it away) nice and easy. It comes equipped with a retracting iron stand that has room for the water jug and hooks for coat hangers, as well as a reversible cover with heavy duty cotton on one side, and metallised heat reflective fabric on the other. Hills large ironing board, $89, I/N: 0253774

BASKET BONUS A good basket collection is the key to an organised laundry. The Foldable Bamboo Laundry Basket comes in three colourways – Black, Smoke and Striped – to help keep darks, lights and whites separate, making wash day a little more seamless. With a strong but lightweight bamboo frame and waterproof polyurethane coated fabric, these durable helpers have a 35L capacity and can fold away when the washing is done.

3. Hills foldable bamboo laundry basket in Striped, $29.95, I/N: 0217254. 4. Hills foldable bamboo laundry basket in Smoke, $29.95, I/N: 0013628.

Room for living The second episode of the Make It Happen makeover series tackles a complete lounge-room transformation

LUCY GLADE-WRIGHT of Hunting for George and resident MAX

F

Clear space, clear mind Despite these issues, the family lived with the layout until Max’s older sister moved out and the Bunnings Make It Happen team moved in. Series host and renovation expert Lucy Glade-Wright of Hunting for George (huntingforgeorge.com) began the transformation by clearing out the space. “They’d crammed a lot into a very small space. I wanted to open it up and look at what we were dealing with,” says Lucy. “Max wanted to create a living area his mum and family could really enjoy. It ended up being a simple cosmetic fix.”  “It’s sometimes good to stick to neutral tones on the wall and on the floor, to help create a base on which you can layer” Lucy Glade-Wright Hunting for George bunnings.com.au |

or 21-year-old university student Max, the saying ‘a mother’s love knows no bounds’ certainly rings true. About two years ago, to create a much-needed third bedroom for him, his mother sacrificed the living room in their Melbourne home by rather awkwardly slicing it in half. “There was really no other option for me,” explains Max. “We put up sliding doors to separate the lounge room, and then I was living in the other half.” Issues with the arrangement emerged almost immediately. “It basically took away the lounge room,” explains Max. “It was very claustrophobic and so tight with the two couches and the TV in the corner. No-one really wanted to use the room knowing I was right behind them. They couldn’t watch anything late at night because then I couldn’t sleep!”

Lounge-space renovation

An inside job As a key focal point, the non-working fireplace was given an instant update by painting its interior black and refreshing the white exterior. “I wanted the inside to be painted because it was ugly bare cement. Simply painting that elevated the fireplace and made it look completely new,” says Lucy. Quick fixes Removing the makeshift doors that separated the living room and bedroom brought in much-needed natural light. Holes were patched, the walls and ceilings painted, the old carpet ripped up and new laminate floorboards installed. “That’s one of the best parts of the renovation,” says Max. “The floor is much easier to keep clean – and it looks a lot nicer, too.” Fixtures and fittings were refreshed with a modern ceiling fan and wall light, while stylish and airy sheer curtains add softness, texture and gently diffused light as the perfect finishing touch.

Into the zone An enthusiastic gamer, Max had often coaxed his mum into playing too. Creating a space where they could continue to spend this time together was important for Max. “We had the idea to have a desk where they could still play games together, but it would be an inclusive space,” says Lucy. Defining the area was as simple as painting a feature wall, adding a desk and installing some storage above – actually a Clever Cube floor unit secured to the wall with strong angle brackets. ◆

Come into the warm

A

s outside temperatures drop, think how good it feels to be cosy indoors, perhaps with the intimacy of a crackling fire. In our winter fantasies, we’d do it all with abandon – but in reality, that cosiness comes at a financial and environmental cost. You can tough it out in a thicker pair of socks, or upgrade your home heating and insulation and achieve winter comfort in an energy-efficient fashion. Here are some smart ways to stay toasty. 

Update it Tip

Mistral 2000W flame effect heater, $149, I/N: 0231259

One-touch atmosphere For the visual appeal of dancing flames without the fuss, look at low-maintenance alternatives to woodburners. Gas heaters blaze up at the touch of a button, or consider electric fireplace heaters, which provide flame effects with no venting required, and can be moved from room to room.

Eco air A reverse-cycle air conditioner covers off all your heating and cooling needs in one unit, but that’s not the only benefit. According to the government’s energy rating website, the least efficient air conditioner today is more efficient than the most efficient air conditioner on the market in 2001. All reverse cycle air conditioners use refrigerants to concentrate heat from the environment, but the new and improved R32 refrigerant is the gold standard, with no impact on the ozone layer and just one third of the global warming potential of its predecessors*. Demand more While you’re investing in a new heating option, look for one that offers more control of your climate. Samsung’s Good Sleep mode gently lowers temperatures as we fall asleep and raises them again for a snug awakening. A good air conditioner can also be a climate control overachiever, heating and cooling, while – as in the Mitsubishi ‘Avanti’ range – cleaning the air of allergens and bacteria.

Return to wood Solid fuel home heaters have come a long way, with the new generation of slow-combustion heaters boasting enhanced eco credentials. As of September 2019, all new wood heaters sold in Australia have to adhere to a strict set of standards: no more than 1.5 grams of emissions per kilogram of wood burnt and at least 60 per cent heating efficiency. Of course, a wood heater is not only a heating tool, but a style statement – look for one that suits your space.

Before buying a wood heater, check regulations with your state environment protection agency and your local council, as you may need a development application

Add texture Warmth is physical but also emotional – dial it up with a few visual triggers. Interior designer Chontelle Samios (@ellesin designsydney) says soft furnishings are a great place to start; “Oversized rugs under your lounge, textured throw cushions and blankets all give off a warm emotional response in cold winter months.” For more ideas on cosy decor, turn to page 15. Curtain call A sunny expanse of windows is a weak link in winter. A single pane of glass can lose almost 10 times as much heat as the same area of insulated wall but, if you are renovating, double-glazed windows can reduce heat loss by 30 per cent*. For a quick fix, think curtains, blinds or, even better, a layered combination.

Smart thinking When it’s cold outside, wi-fi control allows you to preemptively strike while on your commute, switching on the heating so you can return home to instant cosiness. Some air conditioners, such as the Mitsubishi ‘Bronte’ range, can be fitted with a wi-fi adaptor, which allows you to operate it remotely via a tablet or smartphone. Then, at home, you can use voice control (through a Google or Amazon smart home hub) to crank up the heat from the comfort of your bed.

Deal with draughts According to Climate Council senior researcher Tim Baxter, around 40 per cent of home energy use goes on heating and cooling, but 25 per cent of this is wasted. “Remarkable quantities of heat are lost through small gaps around windows and doors or up unused chimneys – or in some instances through cracks in walls and between floorboards,” says Tim. Thankfully, installing a brush strip to block breezes sneaking under the door is as easy as operating a drill, and adhesive door and window seals are even simpler to apply. } Raven ‘Draught Excluder RP61’ door and window seal in Grey, $14.24/5m, I/N: 3961102

Improve the temperature of your home with DIY Earthwool insulation: bunnings.com.au/insulatewith-earthwool

Well padded A properly insulated home is a snug winter home – and a cool summer home, for that matter. Tim Baxter says, “Insulation in the roof, walls and floors is a must for anyone who is hoping to seriously improve the way their home holds heat.” Reflective foils tend to work well in warm climates, where they reflect heat from entering a house, while bulk insulators, like glasswool batts, act like a thermal barrier – the higher the R rating of a product, the more heat it will resist. Some bulk insulation products can be retrofitted and, with good access, this can be a relatively easy DIY job.

uring the cooler months, bathrooms and laundries can be places of temperature extremes – it’s lovely in the shower or next to the dryer, but those tiles can be freezing underfoot! Unlike a living room, where you can install a range of heating solutions, bathrooms and laundries are another story. The humidity and high likelihood of splashing means a portable electric heater is a serious no-no, and the usual tools for softening hard spaces – like textural rugs and curtains – don’t work in a wet space. Thankfully there are ways to heat these hardworking zones. }

Update it From the ground up Underfloor heating is perfect for tiled spaces – a great way to keep your tootsies toasty! Why it’s awesome

Since the entire installation is under the tiles, it doesn’t take up space and there will be no cold spots in the room where the warmth doesn’t reach, because the whole floor is essentially the heater. Unlike some other forms of heating, there’s no filter to clean, and since it does not actively move air around the room, it doesn’t stir up any dust, either.

In spaces such as a bathroom or laundry, under-tile heating may help moisture evaporate, handy if you’re regularly hanging damp towels or wet clothes – it will help them dry exponentially faster, while removing moisture from the air and potentially reducing mould growth. Depending on the size of your floor area and how long you run it for, it can also be an energy-efficient option.

Any drawbacks?

Underfloor heating can be difficult to retrofit, and is best installed during a major reno, rebuild or when adding an extension. You will also need a licensed tradie to assist with installation.

A combination heat lamp/extractor fan/light is an excellent all-in-one bathroom solution. Monique Cheung at IXL explains, “Alongside the superior illumination of an energy-saving LED light, infra-red heat lamps provide IXL ‘Tastic Triumph’ 3 in 1 bathroom heat fan light, $126, I/N: 4442496

instant warmth while a powerful extraction fan removes steam for a clean and clear environment.” A standard addition to a bathroom, an extractor fan is equally important in a laundry, especially if you’re using a dryer or hanging wet clothes.

While a window helps vent moist air, you’re likely to avoid opening it when it’s cold out. An extractor fan keeps the air dry without letting in the chill, while a heat lamp makes the room more comfortable and gets clothes dry and off the racks faster.

ATMOSPHERE ALL YEAR

Beyond the ultra-realistic flame, a powerful and efficient fan-forced heater keeps you snug on frosty days. And when you want mood without the warmth, you can do that too; the heat can be switched off at any time, while the flames can continue to flicker to provide that warm, glowing ambience.

SAFETY FIRST

Compared to their wood-burning counterparts, Dimplex electric fireplaces also offer peace of mind. Children, pets and fireplaces can be a dangerous combination – unless you’ve chosen an electric alternative where the flame doesn’t burn (despite how real it appears) and the glass exterior front remains cool to touch. There’s also no need to worry about moisture or mould created by condensation, and you can forget any concerns about oxygen depletion, carbon monoxide poisoning or smoke in your home. And did we mention there’ll be no more splinters?

EASY UPKEEP

Say goodbye to sourcing wood and stubborn creosote build-up in your home. Going electric isn’t just the tidier alternative, it’s also a whole lot easier. There’s no need to meet special ventilation requirements and, in many cases, you won’t even require installation – it’s as simple as plugging it in, and turning it on. Moving home? Renting? Not a problem – just like your favourite piece of furniture, most portable electric fires can be easily moved around, too.

hat’s the best way to get sad-looking floors like new again? Read on for advice on cleaning and caring for the most popular types of flooring. Timber finishes Dirt and sand can scratch a solid timber floor, so the top tip is simply to vacuum or sweep with an electrostatic mop. “These floors are best vacuumed weekly, as dust, dander and other allergens can work their way into the cracks between floorboards,” says Craig Knighton of Vax. You can also use a damp but thoroughly wrung out mop – microfibre flat mops are better than sponge or string ones here. Check your cleaning product is pH-neutral and not spirit or solvent based, avoid abrasive or concentrated detergents, and never use scourers or steel wool. Minor scratches in floorboards can often be touched up using a tinted wax crayon. You can also try a touch-up pen or buffand-polish fluid. If there is a deeper scratch or ding, but the damage is not extensive enough to justify refinishing the whole floor, a timber touch-up kit might save the day.

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Vinyl collection Denise Retallick of Gerflor (Senso) says, “Vinyl flooring is by far one of the easiest types of floors to maintain. Scuff marks, dirt and grime will effortlessly wipe away with any pH-neutral cleaner.” However, decades-old vinyl flooring that’s sustained heavy wear might need to be replaced. Consider self-adhesive vinyl planks which are easy to install and very hardwearing – and in the unlikely event you manage to gouge or scrape one, there’s a simple solution: “Using a hair dryer, gently warm the damaged plank for several minutes, then prise up the edge with a utility knife until you can grab it,” says Denise. “Then just remove the plank and replace it with a new one.” } EXPERT TIP Avoid using a steam mop on solid timber flooring, as heat and moisture may cause the boards to deform and compromise the coating

Magic carpets Vacuuming is the best way to keep carpets clean. “A weekly vacuum would be fairly typical, but the frequency also depends on the amount of foot traffic or whether you have pets at home,” says Craig Knighton. Not just for in-between cleans, a cordless yet powerful handheld vacuum is a handy tool for tricky areas such as stairs and tight spaces. Clean spot stains using a specialist carpet stain remover, and once or twice a year, treat your carpet to a steam clean to wash out ground-in dirt; deep cleaners are available from the Hire Shop. Floating floors As with solid timber flooring, abrasion from soil and sand particles is damaging to both engineered and laminate-type floating floors. Engineered floorboards have a thin layer of real timber under the surface, so they can be sanded and refinished like solid floorboards, giving you an opportunity to reverse any damage. Laminate floors don’t have this timber layer and can’t be fixed the same way. Clean them using a damp (but not saturated) mop, or simply vacuum once a week, keeping the vacuum’s brush in the ‘up’ setting. Laminate floors are particularly sensitive to moisture, so wipe up any spills immediately. If something gets stuck on, use a plastic or wooden spatula to gently remove it; never use a scouring pad or metal implement. bunnings.com.au |

A rough patch Sometimes, only a small area of a timber floor is scuffed – for example, near a doorway or breakfast bar. Try wiping a damp cloth over the worn area. If this makes it temporarily blend in with the rest of the floor, you may be able to get away with a patch refinish instead of a full sand-andstart-again. Choose a clear timber finish in the same sheen level as the rest of your floor; polyurethane and oil-based finishes are often better for this task than waterbased products.

5 Glitz Green cleaning vinegar, $2.74/2L, I/N: 4460483. 6 Karcher ‘FC5 Pet’ hard floor corded cleaner, $399, I/N: 0106502.

Tip-top tiles Tiled floors can hold a surprising amount of dirt and sand. “This is especially true if you live in a dusty area or have pets,” says Craig. As with other hard floors, vacuum weekly, then give them a solid clean by mopping with a solution of water and white vinegar; often vinegar makes ceramic tiles sparkle more brightly than chemical cleaning solutions, and it’s also gentle on the environment. Stone tiles tend to need more frequent cleaning, so a microfibre power cleaner can be an effective way to save elbow grease. Only use mild solutions such as water with dishwashing liquid to avoid damaging the sealant. If they do become damaged, tiles can be difficult to repair. A cracked tile will need to be removed and replaced, which is fiddly but achievable for a confident DIYer. If you’re laying new tile floors, hold back a few spare tiles in case of future accidents (see below). ◆

Reattach the spring fixings over the seat and backrest, enlisting a second pair of hands to help hook the springs to prevent recoil. Cut and staple hessian to fit over the springs, with 50mm excess around the edges to double over as a hem to help hold the staples. With a utility knife, cut 100mm-thick foam to cover the seat and backrest, trimming the corners from the top for a rounded profile.

Remove the arms using a wrench to loosen the nuts and bolts. Unclip the springs from the seat and backrest, holding them with gloves to prevent recoil, then remove the spring fixings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to prepare a 10L bucket with rust converter to soak and treat all the metal parts.

Position foam over hessian and chair back, then cut wadding to fit over foam, pulling it taut to staple evenly under chair frame. On the seat, position fabric, folding corners and cutting it with scissors, leaving 50mm hem to tuck under chair and fold under for stapling. Install a staple at the mid-point of each side, front and back to hold the fabric, then work around the sides, pulling the fabric taut to secure with staples.

With a damp cloth, clean the arms and legs. Sand using a detail sander with a 120-grit disc to remove the old varnish. Repeat with 180-grit for a smooth finish, then remove dust with a damp cloth. Apply two coats of stain with a paintbrush, leaving to dry after each. Buff with furniture oil to finish.

To cover the backrest, stretch the fabric over the wadding, folding under the corners and creating a flap to cover the back of the chair (with the fabric folded inwards to hide the edges and prevent fraying). Find the existing holes in the frame, then punch through the fabric with a screwdriver to reattach arms using the restored bolts, washers and screws. ◆

A

shaving cabinet is a standard feature of most bathrooms, but it’s usually designed more for practicality than style. A timber frame can make it a design hero, adding charm and functionality in the shape of an extra display shelf. To cut the pieces the same depth as our cabinet, use a combination square to mark 160mm lengthways from both edges of the 1800mm panel and one edge of the 1200mm panel. Cut with a circular saw and straightedge. From the 1800mm pieces, cut two 820mm side pieces, plus a 605mm top and shelf. From the 1200mm piece, cut a 605mm shelf back. Tip: For a snug fit, a 5mm allowance is added to the top, shelf and shelf back, 4mm is added to the sides.

For a neat finish make the cuts lengthways along the factory edges, the same width as the depth of your cabinet, so that the leftover offcuts are from the middle of the panels

Small changes Take these simple ideas from the Make It Happen makeover for a fab room reno at your place

T

he living room revamp from episode two of the Make It Happen series shows how small changes can have a big impact. These ideas can easily be adapted for your own home.

DIY a desk A work or study zone is a great asset to any home, but not everyone has the luxury of a separate room. As the MIH team showed, you can borrow space from a living zone to create a study nook – and even make a desk to suit your space! It’s a relatively simple project, especially if you have the timber panel trimmed in store to the size you want.

This desktop has been left natural, but you can accentuate the grain using furniture oil applied with a cloth

Photography Paul Johnstone. Project editing Natasha Dickins. •Timbers vary by state and territory; contact your local store for further information.

TOOLS & MATERIALS

afety equipment (mask,  S eye and ear protection) Tape measure and pencil  Drill with driver and  3mm drill bits Masking tape  1200mm x 600mm x 18mm  timber panel our 710mm-high table legs  F 180-grit abrasive paper with  sanding block Cloth 

1

With the best face of the panel facing down, at the corners, mark 15mm in from both edges. Use a leg as a template, positioning the plate between the marks to transfer the screw holes with a pencil.

2

Set up the drill with a 3mm bit, wrap tape 15mm up from the tip to act as a depth gauge and predrill the holes. Smooth all over both sides of the panels with 180-grit abrasive paper, then wipe away dust with a damp cloth.

Tips for creating a study nook  Find the right place Make sure you have plenty of room to spread out, that there’s at least one power point nearby and that there’s adequate (but not glaring) natural light.  Sort storage To help keep the desktop clear, install storage – perhaps wall shelving or a small cabinet under the desk.  Style it up Personalise the space with meaningful but practical touches, such as a lamp for task lighting, an ergonomic chair, a spot of potted greenery and a coaster for your coffee.

Make it

Make a feature wall A painted wall is a quick and easy way to transform a space, adding life to a neutral scheme, or it can be used to define a separate zone, like this study nook within a larger living area. TOOLS & MATERIALS

Safety equipment (mask  and eye protection) Spatula   50mm paintbrush  Sponge R oller with extension pole and tray Gap filler  180-grit abrasive paper  with sanding block  Sugar soap wipes  Painter’s tape  Drop sheet W all paint

1

Prepare the area by moving furniture away, taking down pictures and fixtures, and putting a drop sheet against the skirting board. Using a spatula, scrape away any flaking paint, and smooth over holes with gap filler, leaving to dry.

5

Wear a mask to smooth over the filler and any bumps with 180-grit abrasive paper; use a dry paintbrush to remove dust from skirting boards and corners. Clean the entire wall with sugar soap wipes, leaving to dry thoroughly.

Mask around the outside of the wall to be painted, positioning painter’s tape along the ceiling or cornice, over skirting boards, around window and door trim, power points, switches and other non-moveable fixtures.

Using a 50mm brush, cut in along the edges with the wall paint (use masking tape for a neat line). Tip: Apply an even coat of paint by holding the brush vertically to cut in downwards and horizontally to paint sideways.

Apply paint with a roller, starting at the top and moving down in a W pattern, in metre-wide sections, then leave to dry. Apply a second coat, remove tape and leave to dry. Tip: Seal the roller in plastic wrap between coats to stop it drying. ◆

Paint colours may vary on application.

Plant pick

Inside story Take your indoor jungle to the next level with easy-to-grow statement potted plants Chinese money plant Glossy pancake-like leaves hang from a central tree-like stem. The foliage tends to turn and face the sun, which may cause the stem to bend as it grows, so rotate the plant regularly and support it with a stake. Place in bright, indirect light, plant in a free-draining potting mix and water when the top 2.5cm of soil is dry. Nerve plant These petite plants are low growers, preferring to hug the ground in the wild, so are perfect for shallow pots, hanging baskets or terrariums. Position in a spot with bright indirect light, and water when the top 2.5cm of soil is dry. They’ll wilt dramatically if neglected, but can be revived with a good deep watering.

Chinese money plant

(Pilea peperomioides)

Nerve plant

(Fittonia spp.)

This plant will produce offsets or ‘babies’ in spring, which can be cut and divided into new plants.

The white veins in the small oval green leaves offer a great colour contrast; other varieties have pink or red veins.

Parlour palm

Peacock plant

Peacock plant Available in various patterns, shapes and colours, these small-to-medium sized plants make ideal indoor greenery. Foliage can be large, rounded, oblong or lance-like, and is decorated with stripes or block colours. Position in a brightly lit spot, out of direct sunlight, and water when the top 2.5cm of soil is dry. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

(Chamaedorea elegans)

Keep an eye out for mealy bug or scale (treat with a suitable insecticide) and water when the top 5cm of soil is dry.

bunnings

(Calathea spp.)

Native to tropical climates, it prefers humid conditions, so group a few together and mist regularly to increase humidity.

Parlour palm This elegant palm’s lacy darker green fronds bring in a taste of the tropics. Its attractive clumping stems create a lush, full appearance, so despite being a slow grower (eventually reaching two metres indoors), it can still make quite an impact. Grows in bright indirect light but will also survive in lower light conditions, and needs little attention.
