We could all do with a little magic after the year we’ve had, and it’s easy to create a festive wonderland – just add masses of sparkling lights! We’re sharing our pick on page 39. The cute llamacorn gets my vote – it will go nicely with the pair of pink flamingos I had patrolling my shrubs last year! If you’re staying home for the holidays, check out our three destinationinspired looks – as well as our story on getting the Hamptons look at home – and get that #staycation feel. Plus, if you’re struggling for gift ideas, cast your eye over the vast array from page 13 - we’re here to help!

Privacy is often number one on homemakers’ wish lists – and commonly missing in rental properties. Take inspiration from Nathan James, who transformed his rented open courtyard into a private retreat that can be packed up and moved to his next home. Five bamboo raft screens, whitewashed with line marking paint, provide the privacy. “Two 500g cans were enough for the five bamboo panels,” says Nathan. Next, he went all out on decorating. His furniture pieces were all sourced separately, so he created cohesion by using the same colour paint over a few key items: Rust-Oleum chalk paint was used on the sideboard and outdoor dining table, with 1 Walpamur low sheen extra bright blockout UV paint in White, $49/4L, I/N: 1400787. 2 Lattice Makers 1800mm x 900mm half raft screen in Yellow Bamboo, $67.90, I/N: 0014410. 3 Dulux ‘Duramax’ metallic spray paint in Metallic Gold, $15.40/325g, I/N: 1400730. 4 Dulux ‘Metalshield’ epoxy enamel spray paint in High Gloss Black, $11.90/300g, I/N: 1400819. 2 5 Dy-Mark line marking paint in White, $12/500g, I/N: 1663554. 6 Rust-Oleum ‘Chalked’ ultra matt spray paint in Charcoal, $17.29/340g, I/N: 1580938. 7 Dulux ‘Duramax’ marble effect spray paint in Marble Black, $24.80/ 1 300g, I/N: 1400866.

Nathan James home decorator

Dulux metallic gold spray paint applied to the sideboard drawers for added wow. Walpamur low sheen paint was used on the rattan occasional chairs, the outdoor terrace mirrors were given a coat of Dulux ‘Metalshield’ black epoxy enamel paint, and the multiple planters had a luxurious revamp with Dulux ‘Duramax’ marble effect spray – a masterly display of the power of paint! 3

Design tip Use a macrame pot hanger as outdoor wall art – its beachy vibe is just right for your ‘holiday home’

Paint colours may vary on application. *Ensure light shades and rug are used in areas protected from the elements.

Transform gaudy op shop vases using waterbased interior paint with the magical addition of baking powder. Simply stir a tablespoon of this pantry staple into one cup (250ml) of paint, and see how the mixture reacts to form a mousselike consistency. When brushed onto your vessel, it takes on a similar chalky texture to handthrown terracotta. We used Dulux paints in Evening Blush, Terra Tone, How Now and Apricot Mix. Tip: Only make up small quantities at a time because the mixture dries quickly, and be aware that the painted vessels aren’t food safe.

Bamboo planter What you need  Safety equipment (eye protection and disposable gloves)  Bamboo matchstick blind  Straight-sided planter  Measuring tape and felt-tip pen  Scissors  Trigger flow hot glue gun  Glue gun sticks Method 1 Unroll the blind and lay it flat on the floor. Measure the circumference of the planter, then position it on the edge of the blind with the bamboo ‘matchsticks’ running vertically. 2 Mark 20mm above the top edge of the planter, then remove it to mark its circumference from the side of the blind. Cut the blind to size with scissors. Tip: When clipping the string woven through the blind, leave enough over to knot at the end to prevent unravelling. 3 Stand the planter on a flat surface. Using a hot glue gun, glue the bamboo in place and allow to dry. Trim any excess string from the knots. Tip: Keep your planter protected from harsh elements and avoid wetting the bamboo. 

Napkin rings

Create unique pieces with no-bake clay

We made these simple napkin rings using Boyle air drying clay, which reaches an earthenwarelike hardness in about 24 hours. Simply roll out the clay with a rolling pin to about 3mm thickness, cut out 60mm x 120mm rectangles using a craft knife, then lightly press letter stamps into the centres of the rectangles. A patch from scratch

From freshly snipped salad leaves to firm potatoes lifted out of your own soil, there’s nothing like the taste of homegrown veg

A

s we head into the warmer months, now is the time to get inspired to create your own productive vegie patch. Here’s how to transform even the most barren backyard into a veritable smorgasbord of edible goodies. Select the perfect spot Urban horticultural consultant Matt Gerakios of Phyton Australia (phytonaustralia.com.au), advises, “Morning to early afternoon sun is best as most vegies need at least six hours of sun a day to thrive, so areas facing between east and north are ideal. However, if you live in the tropics, you may need to filter the midday sun for best results – a shade cloth or large overhanging trees will help.” 

Salad vegetables such as lettuces and spring onions are among the most productive and rewarding bunnings |

36

Plan it Choose up or down Consider whether you want an in-ground or raised bed. “In-ground garden beds are cost-effective and easy to set up,” says Matt Gerakios. “However, the soil needs to be suitable (moist, but well-draining) or able to be improved – if it’s heavy clay, this may be quite difficult.” If your soil isn’t quite up to scratch, raised beds are a good solution. They can be installed on most outdoor surfaces, making gardening possible virtually anywhere. Also, “Raised beds allow you to work at a height that is kind to your knees and back and, because it’s filled with imported soil, it should drain easily and efficiently,” says Matt. Go to ground If you’re working with in-ground garden beds, the addition of organic matter such as compost and blood and bone is beneficial, regardless of your soil type. Work these into the soil prior to planting. “All vegie gardens will benefit from the regular addition of organic matter over the long term – it improves soil structure, increasing the water and nutrient-holding capacity,” explains Matt. If planting in raised garden beds, fill them with a good-quality garden mix. For small beds, you can use large bags of garden mix, but if you have bigger areas to deal with, order soil in cubic metres and have it delivered. Alternatively, try the ‘no-dig’ method: alternate layers of compost, organic mulch and aged manure – this highly nutritious mix breaks down and fuels your growing plants.

Plant a seed Try to choose plants you know you will eat and use this as a guide when buying seeds or seedlings. “Seeds are great value for money,” says horticulturist Kylie Last of Mr Fothergill’s. “For the same price as one or two seedlings, you can purchase a pack of seeds, which can sometimes contain hundreds or even thousands of seeds – there may also be a greater range of varieties to choose from.” Seeds can take some time to germinate and grow, so plan to ensure they go in at the right time. Always read the pack or label to check the sun, space and growing needs of your plants – climbing beans, tomatoes and cucumbers need room and a support to climb, while pumpkins, sweet potatoes and melons need space to spread. Swap crops Make sure to rotate your plants so they’re not planted in the same spot, year after year. “Plants in the Solanaceae family – tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and capsicums – in particular, can suffer EXPERT TIP Sow successive crops to help extend the harvest window – try spinach, lettuce, bok choy and other Asian leafy greens, and dwarf or climbing beans When fertilising or spraying your plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating

5 favourite vegies Easy enough for novices to grow and delicious to eat! Tomatoes A family fave, with lots of varieties to choose from. For small spaces look for compact varieties like ‘Patio’ and ‘Tiny Tim’.

Leafy greens A staple in most vegie gardens, leafy greens like loose-leaf lettuce, spinach, bok choy and tatsoi are quick to grow and can be harvested from 6-8 weeks.

Beetroot A fun and easy vegie to grow – and both leaves and roots are edible. Harvest young leaves (leaving at least 5-6 on the plant) and add to salads and sandwiches.

Radish One of the fastest growing vegies, you’ll be adding them to your salads in as little as 5-8 weeks. Happy in pots and garden beds alike.

Cucumbers The ultimate summer snack, especially when picked straight off the vine. Look for Lebanese, ‘Richmond Green Apple’ or ‘Burpless’. For small areas, try ‘Patio’ or ‘Spacemaster’.

from soil-borne diseases that can build up quickly when they are grown in the same soil over consecutive seasons,” says Matt. “Ideally, there should be a three- to four-year gap between plants of the same family being planted in the same bed.” Be better together “Companion planting is a method of growing plants together in combinations that promote healthy plants,” explains Kylie. “They may help deter pests, attract beneficial insects, suppress weeds and fix nitrogen.” Try beans and corn; tomato and basil; and dill and cabbage.

Go with the flow Vegies need regular water to thrive. You can use a watering can or hose, but also consider an irrigation scheme. “Soaker hoses and drip-irrigation systems are easy to set up and do an excellent job of getting water to where it is most needed,” says Matt. Adding a timer or having an automated set-up will ensure watering happens like clockwork. Always comply with local water restrictions. Mulch like mad Make sure your watering efforts don’t go to waste by mulching beds well. Apply a 6-8cm layer of organic mulch, like pea straw or lucerne, over the soil, leaving space around the plants. Organic mulches are ideal for vegie beds as they add nutrients to the soil as they break down. ◆

Clad it “Updating the exterior to create this look is very simple. Adding weatherboards screams Hamptons home,” says Natalee. James Hardie ‘Linea’ weatherboards can even be used to clad brick, so virtually any home can be given an East Coastinspired makeover. }

Relocate to the Hamptons without leaving home, with these tips to capture the Long Island look

orn on the beach, Hamptons style is a look that we’ve adopted en masse and adapted to our Aussie way of life. If your home is far from the coastal sanctuary you crave, don’t despair. Here are our 18 pointers to effortless seaside style.

OUTSIDE

1

Choose coastal colours Rachel Lacy, chief coloursmith at Taubmans, explains, “The Hamptons style exudes a relaxed and effortless elegance that has timeless appeal. Create this look at home by starting with a refined coastal palette of crisp whites, deep, dark and duck-egg blues, and pale blue-greys.” Contrast is key; highlight windows and trims in a bright white.

“For a perfect Hamptons look, try a mid-tone grey, Dulux Tranquil Retreat, which is perfect for walls, with Vivid White on any trims” Andrea Lucena-Orr Dulux colour and communications manager

2

Go large outdoors An expansive outdoor area is the most practical of Hamptons-style additions. Designer and James Hardie ambassador Natalee Bowen says, “HardieDeck is a great option here in Australia, with very little maintenance required in our harsh climate. It gives a cleaner look, which I think appeals to us.”

3

Give your garden a manicured feel Try box hedging or buxus balls, choose pavers in a pale, sandstone hue and keep colour subtle with white flowers or classic choices like hydrangeas. bunnings |

Update it INSIDE

5

Aim for classic in the kitchen “A neutral, soft colour palette with Shaker-style doors paired with marble-look benchtops lends itself perfectly to this elegant look,” says Briony Mikrou, marketing communications manager at Kaboodle Kitchen. Kaboodle’s ‘Alpine’ profile doors have the distinctive Shaker-style panelling seen in East Coast American cook zones and can be retrofitted into any kitchen, as long as your Kaboodle 900mm cut to measure benchtop cabinets are in Biancoccino the same size as those in the Kaboodle range.

6

Introduce light Give wall cabinets an upgrade with glass-panel doors, which will give the kitchen that all-important feeling of light. Complete the effect by styling up the shelves with displayworthy pieces.

Kaboodle Kitchen cabinetry in Alpine profile in Nougat Truffle and Black Olive (on island), benchtop in Mayonella and cup handles in Matt Black

7

Pick timeless hardware “Cup pull handles in a brushed stainless steel finish, or even gold handles with clean lines will complement the aesthetic,” says Briony. The easiest way to change knobs and pulls is by choosing new ones with the screws in the same position – take your old hardware to the store to compare.

8

Favour timber for the floor Timber is the flooring of choice, but if you’re not blessed with boards already, try timber laminate, which gives the look of solid timber boards for less and can be laid by a confident DIYer. Or, for an even simpler option, vinyl planks replicate timber and the peel-and-stick installation is achieveable for even home improvement novices.

Dress the windows The aim is to enhance light – shutters are the ultimate Hamptons window covering, bouncing light off the blades and epitomising coastal style. For larger windows or where you need an unimpeded view, look for simple and unobtrusive Roman blinds.

10

Panel the walls Panelling can elevate plain flat walls and give rooms the requisite layered texture. Products like Easycraft wall linings are designed to retrofit, are a relatively straightforward DIY fix (see page 56 for instructions) and will completely change the look and feel of a room.

Compose a relaxed palette “Hamptons-style homes are often natural and light in scheme,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux colour and communications manager. “Soft, neutral colours and tones such as grey-blues and subtle greens, and greiges [beige plus grey] paired with whites (warm and cool) can be used to help achieve this look.” }

STYLING

13

14

Find a theme “Styling up a Hamptons home depends on the look you are trying to create,” says Natalee Bowen. “If you’re heading for a coastal, beachy vibe, look at layering coral, jute rugs, a blue and white theme and seaweed or shell prints. If you are doing more of a modern take, stick to a theme of black and white – think wrought iron light features, cream or soft grey lounges and pops of black furniture.”

15

Layer with rugs Create intimate zones and add luxurious warmth underfoot with rugs. Draw on the look’s beach holiday origins with natural textures like jute, coir and sisal, or lightweight cotton rugs in seaside shades of blue and golden sand.

16

Hang pendants No Hamptons home is complete without an eye-catching pendant over a table or kitchen island. Lantern-style pendants in wrought iron or shiny chrome strike the perfect balance of eye-catching elegance.

17

Introduce plants Enhance that all-important outdoor connection with potted plants, especially palms and other plants with striking statement foliage.

18

Create talking points Have fun styling up shelves or creating little tray collections that you can pick up and move out of the way when needed. “The Hamptons is a very eclectic look, so adding vignettes through the house with collated items you love works wonders and sparks conversation,” says Natalee. ◆

VJ-look panelling

Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring and pipework, and turn off the power while working

Into the groove Give your interior a Hamptons look with easy-to-install wall panels

D

ecorative panels can be DIY installed over an existing plasterboard wall for a speedy room makeover. Grooved panels are often referred to as VJ, which refers to the ‘vertical joints’ of the traditional tongue-and-groove system of joining separate boards. These days, 1200mm-wide MDF panels are pre-grooved and primed, making installation and painting easier, and some come with a removeable plastic joiner that acts as the ‘tongue’ for the groove to slide in to, for a snug fit. Note: To work around power points, measure and cut a hole in the panel before attaching to the wall. For a neater finish, enlist the help of an electrician to remove and refit the face plate.

PRO TIP

If you don’t have a nail gun, use a hammer with 2mm x 40mm bullethead nails, tapping them below the surface with a nail punch

Clean the walls with sugar soap for maximum adhesion. Use a stud finder to locate the wall framing as the fixing points. Mark the position on the floor with tape. Tip: You can fit the panels above the skirting, but removing and refitting them gives a neater look.

Set out 10mm spacers along the floor or skirting and enlist help to position the panel over them to butt up against the cornice. Use a level vertically to ensure the panel is straight. Nail into the wall studs.

bunnings

Measure the wall from the floor (or top of skirting) to cornice and subtract 10mm for expansion. Tip: When measuring the width of the wall, allow for 1200mm-wide panels, avoiding cutting the last panel along a groove.

To position the second panel, place the plastic joiner into the groove before slotting it into the fixed panel, tapping them together lightly with a mallet then securing to the wall studs.

Remove the plastic joiners and cut them to length with pliers. Wearing safety gear, cut the panels with a circular saw and straightedge. Working on one at a time, apply adhesive to the back of a panel with a caulking gun.

Cover nail holes with timber filler, leave to dry, then sand. To paint, cut into the cornice and grooves with an angled brush, then apply three coats with a roller, leaving to dry after each. Re-install skirting. ◆

Stuck on you For all those niggly DIY jobs, skip the screws and get them done in a jiffy with Selleys Hold Up ™ adhesive

S

helves to hang? Towel racks to mount? Now you can work smarter, not harder with Selleys Hold Up adhesive. It simply sticks to almost anything, without screws or clamps*, so is perfect for drill-avoiding DIYers. Plus, it comes in an easy-squeeze tube – no caulking gun required!

Shelving shortcut Beautifully styled storage is an easy shortcut to a polished interior, but first you need to hang your shelves. Selleys Hold Up makes the job so much easier – and, unlike traditional screw-in methods, where you drill and pray you’ve got it right, Selleys Hold Up is adjustable for up to 15 minutes, so you can get everything perfectly level, every time.

Spice of life Reorganise your pantry without pulling out the power drill with Selleys Hold Up. Putting up a spice rack, small shelf, or noticeboard can be done in minutes, restoring order to your cluttered pantry with no fuss or mess.

Potted colour Vertical gardens and wall-mounted planters are a gorgeous way to add life to a sterile exterior wall. Now it’s even easier to make this on-trend look your own. Selleys Hold Up is UV- and water-resistant, making it suitable for exterior use, and a fantastic solution to the task.

Clutter buster Entryway mess getting you down? A coat rack is an ideal solution, and Selleys Hold Up is the easiest way to get it mounted, as it adheres to painted walls. Make sure you clean the surface and that you sand back the wall to remove any loose or peeling paint before adhering.

Towel tricks Hooks and hangers are the finishing touches of a beautiful bathroom, but drilling into tiles is tricky – there’s nothing worse than cracking a tile in your newly renovated space. Selleys Hold Up adheres to tiles and is water-resistant, making it a dream solution for jobs in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry.

Lock it in A key safe is an ideal solution for short-stay rentals or visiting guests, but attaching one outdoors can be a pain. Tick off the job in minutes with Selleys Hold Up. It sticks to brick, render, timber or concrete, so you can select the secure location of your choice, apply the glue, stick and go!

Be sure to prime surfaces properly and fill chips or dents with epoxy putty for a polished result.

2 A thorough clean (and maybe new grout for tiled floors) might be all you need to revive flooring, but if your lino is looking tired, try DIY-friendly vinyl tiles or planks. “The selfadhesive floor planks can go down over the top of old flooring if it’s in good structural condition,” says Cherie Barber.

C

eiling fans are our friends during the hotter months, offering an energy-efficient option when it comes to cooling: when air is in motion, we can tolerate warmer temperatures – up to 3ºC higher* – so we don’t have to crank up the air conditioning. There are plenty of styles to choose from to complement your decor, but here’s what you need to know before you head in store. When size matters Check the measurements of the area you need to cool. Choosing an incorrect fan size for a space is a common mistake, says HPM lifestyle expert Jason Neophytou. “As a general rule, with rooms measuring 6m x 6m or above, you should consider a larger

fan size – between 1200-1400mm,” he says. “For smaller rooms measuring up to 4m x 5m, such as bedrooms, you should consider sizes up to 1200mm.” If you are dealing with a much larger space, such as an open-plan living/dining zone, you may need two. Comparing airflow between fans of a similar size will help gauge performance, explains Tanya Gatti of Arlec. Airflow measures the average volume of air flowing through measured points every 60 seconds, in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The more CFM, the more the fan can move that air. But watch the wattage it takes to do this – the more power used, the higher your bills. TOP TIP

Typical types Not all blades are created equal – they come in different sizes, materials and quantities, and where you’re going to locate your fan is a key factor in the choice. Blades made of MDF, for example, will not fare so well in an outdoor spot – aluminium, plastic or fibreglass are better options. For spaces such as bedrooms or a study, choose wooden blades, and for kitchens, metal, suggests Jason. “Wooden blades are quieter than metal blades due to their shape,” he explains. “For larger areas, such as kitchens or living rooms, choose a metal blade – these tend to move more air, }

The smell of smoke won’t wake you - a loud smoke alarm is the safest solution

id you know that more Australians die in residential fires on average than by all-natural hazards combined – and most of these fires are preventable?1 What makes a house fire so devastating is the combination of fire, smoke and the production of poisonous gases. These factors combined have the power to kill quickly and silently. Traditionally, fire services try to get to a fire within eight minutes from when they are reported.2 However, it is often considered that the materials commonly found within homes today are more combustible than in the past, and it takes less time for a ‘flashover’ event to occur.3 Five minutes is all it could take to lose your home and family to fire. Thankfully there are some simple things you can do to help protect your home and your loved ones.

warn you if a fire starts in your home, giving your family minutes to escape. We recommend that all Australians follow these simple rules: ● Test your smoke alarm monthly by holding down the test button until you hear a loud alert tone, then release. ● Replace your batteries every year if it is not a smoke alarm with a sealed lithium-ion battery. (Mains powered smoke alarms have back-up batteries that may need replacing. Check the manufacturer’s instructions.)5 ● Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years, regardless of the type of smoke alarm you have.

Design a home fire escape plan to suit your home and talk about it with everybody in the house. Involve your children in the planning and practise regularly. Follow these helpful hints for your home escape plan: ● Practise your escape plan at least twice a year. ● Crawl low if caught in smoke. ● If safe to do so, use windows as an alternative escape route. ● Cover broken glass with a blanket or doona. ● ONCE OUT, STAY OUT. Pick a safe meeting place outside your home (e.g. next to your letterbox). ● If clothes catch alight, stop, put your hands over your face, gently drop to the ground and rock and roll on the floor until your clothes stop burning.

home, especially in the kitchen, garage or shed. ● A dry powder fire extinguisher (DCP) is the most common type used around the home. ● Keep fire blankets in the kitchen where they can be easily reached. ● Check that the fire blanket packaging and fire extinguisher carry the Australian Standards mark. ● We suggest a fire blanket of at least 1m x 1m.

A WORKING SMOKE ALARM COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE According to Department of Fire & Emergency Services, your sense of smell is diminished when you are asleep. With most deaths occurring at night, a working smoke alarm is your electronic nose and will alert you if there is smoke from a fire. A small fire can engulf an entire home in five minutes.4 A correctly positioned working smoke alarm will

Vegie cage  Mini bolt cutters   Bunch of baby’s breath flowers  Clear cable ties M ini pliers

1 Cut an 800mm length of tie wire, bending it into a five-pointed star shape, twisting the ends together and positioning the join at the base. 2 Cover the join with a gum leaf sprig along either side of the point, secure with cable ties, trimming the excess with pliers. 3 Hang from a wall hook or door handle with a double-length of jute twine.

1 Remove the frame from a vegie cage, using bolt cutters to trim as close to the wire rings as possible. Tip: Keep the remaining rings to make other wreaths. 2 Position sprigs of baby’s breath around two-thirds of the ring, securing stems with cable ties, trimming the excess with pliers. Tip: If hanging your wreath on a wall, use fasteners to suit the wall type – usually plasterboard or masonry.

1 Remove the two inside rings of a 40cm-diameter metal pot trivet, using bolt cutters to snip the joining pieces around the inside, keeping the outer rings joined. 2 Working around the ring in one direction, position foliage sprigs, securing the stems with cable ties, trimming the excess ties with pliers. Tip: Completely cover the ring, positioning sprigs so the foliage hides the stems and ties.

From the plywood, cut a piece 600mm high x 596mm (the width of the panel) for the back wall, three 582mm-wide x 300mm-deep floors, and four 400mm high x 300mm wide pieces for the sides and doors. Along the 596mm width of the plywood, measure up 200mm and mark the centre to cut a triangle for the roof front. Save the offcuts to make the internal walls.

Ladder Make a ladder from 12 pieces of 8mm dowel cut to 50mm long. Drill holes either end with a 2mm bit. Thread 3mm macramé cord through one end of each, add an eye hook then thread back through the opposite side. Space the rungs 30mm apart, dab with adhesive, knot the ends and leave to dry. Twist the eye hook into the underside of the top floor. Swing On a plywood offcut of 40mm x 70mm, drill 2mm holes in the corners. Thread macramé cord through holes and over the dowel rafter, then knot the ends. Make the internal walls from the plywood offcuts, cutting two 250mm x 193mm pieces, sliding them onto the ground floor and middle floor. Tip: If they don’t wedge snugly, apply adhesive to the top, back and base, slide into position, clamp and leave to dry.

Clamp the roof front to a stable surface, mark centre and 72.5mm up from the base and use a 92mm hole saw to drill the round window. Position the roof front against the back wall, clamp, mark centre and 22mm down from the point and use a 22mm hole saw to drill both rafter holes. Sand smooth.

To hang the doors, position them flush with the top floor. Mark 10mm in from the edges to position hinges at the top and base, using a screwdriver to secure with 6mm screws. Use 6mm screws to install a magnetic catch to the under-side of the middle floor, with the supplied magnets positioned on the inside of the doors.

Apply adhesive around the rafter holes and along the base of the roof front. Position the dowel in the holes and angle the base of the roof front to sit on the top floor, flush with the front. Clamp, secure with nails up through the rooftop floor, then leave to dry. ◆

Silverbeet Also known as Swiss chard, this large leafy green tastes like spinach, but with a more robust flavour. For a traditional silverbeet variety, go for ‘Fordhook Giant’, but for something with more colour, try rainbow chard. You can enjoy the leaves even after the plant goes to seed, as the flavour does not change. Beans A much-loved vegie for its taste and easy-growing nature. There are two forms – bush or dwarf beans, which are perfect for pots, and climbing beans, which need support. Both produce an abundance of pods in different shapes, colours and flavours. Feed with a potassium-rich fertiliser to encourage flowers and pods.

Silverbeet (Beta vulgaris ssp. cicla)

Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)

Plant in full sun in the garden or in a large pot, and feed with nitrogen-rich fertiliser to boost leafy growth.

Available in bush or climbing varieties, plant in a sunny spot in well-drained soil enriched with blood and bone.

Spring onion

Spring onion For a milder onion taste, spring onions (the long, thin ones with the white bulb) are the perfect addition to the kitchen garden. Prepare the soil with plenty of organic matter and feed with an all-purpose vegie fertiliser throughout the growing season. Harvest the green tops at any time, leaving the bulb intact, which will continue to grow. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Zucchini Once zucchini (also known as courgette) starts fruiting, this climbing vine can be very productive! It’s ideal for pots or garden beds, as long as there is a trellis to keep the leaves and fruit off the ground. Feed with a complete fertiliser suitable for fruiting vegies and pick fruit regularly to encourage continuous cropping.
