Superfresco Easy ‘Vintage Cloud’ 52cm wallpaper in Navy, $102.50/10m, I/N: 0242616†

Editor’s letter

Welcome!

F

estive lighting gets my vote as the easiest way to add magic to any space at this time of year. Apart from anything else, few things distract the eye from a less-than-lovely corner or a tired paint job than a heap of sparkles! There’s festoon lighting draped around my deck, and solar bulbs dotted around the garden, but when it comes to festive lighting – well, let’s just say I like to push the boat out. We’ve featured a Make your own advent calendar! See page 83

KIDS’ ZONE

sparkling selection to inspire you from page 25, as well as the cutest cubby-turned-Santa’sworkshop, which will take your Christmas decorating to the next level! Of course, there are also gift suggestions galore, and lots of tips and tricks to zhoosh up all around your home in time to (we hope!) welcome friends and family for the big day.

While you might hesitate to introduce vibrant wallpaper into your living room, a child’s bedroom is the space to let loose. Here’s your chance to play with patterned wallpaper, which serves up the maximum amount of fun quickly and easily. Then just add a couple of complementary styling pieces to bring the new room to life!

Enjoy the issue!

Prepare your 1 garden for summer. Check your irrigation systems and replace broken taps or fittings. Install a timer to help maximise watering efficiency and treat garden beds with a soil wetter.

Photography (hydrangeas) Brigid Arnott, (herbs) Getty Images.

Dress up a wall or fence with a scented climber, like star jasmine. 2 Use stainless-steel wire to train it along the wall, and secure vines with garden tie if needed.

ITALIAN PARSLEY

The perfect herb for summer salads. Plant in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

Plant pretty hydrangeas (above) for a gorgeous display of summer colour. ‘Endless Summer’ blooms consistently over the warmer months. Prepare the soil with handfuls of organic 3 matter and feed with a high potassium fertiliser during the season. Now is the time to put in sweetcorn. For a steady supply, sow seeds in three sets of

SWEET BASIL

Fragrant and aromatic, it goes best with garlic and tomato recipes. Remove flower buds.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

2m long blocks. 4 Keep different varieties away from each other – they cross pollinate easily, and the results aren’t good! Pot up a herb garden with your favourite aromatics (ours are below) and leave near the back door for easy pickings. Feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser to boost growth. Watch out for aphids in the vegetable patch and flowerbeds. Blast them off with a jet of water or treat with an organic insecticide.

Give lawns a boost with an organic lawn food. It will help feed the grass and improve soil health, too.

5 1 Gardena ‘MultiControl Duo’ water computer, $175, I/N: 3111047. 2 Pinnacle 2mm 316 marine grade stainless steel wire rope, $15.82/30m, I/N: 4310789. 3 Mr Fothergill’s ‘Snow Gold’ sweet corn vegetable seeds, $4.75, I/N: 2960613. 4 Yates ‘Thrive’ natural vegie and herb liquid plant food, $13.50/1L, I/N: 2962094. 5 Scotts ‘Lawn Builder Plus Organics’ lawn food and soil improver $28.44/4kg, I/N: 0069453.

SAGE

Beautiful, hardy and ideal with fish and white meat. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil.

ROSEMARY

A classic Mediterranean herb that’s drought hardy once established. 

MAGIC MAKEOVER

With a love of entertaining and some unexpected extra spare time, Workshop member Rufaro used the Melbourne lockdowns to give his backyard a new look in two parts: the deck space (above) and a side yard with built-in timber vegie garden and benches. To accommodate the sloping site, Rufaro designed a tiered deck as a practical and visually appealing feature. For more makeovers and projects, visit workshop.bunnings.com.au.

Planting grass between pavers, like these Tuscan Path porcelain pavers in Sand, gives an attractive, softer look

efore the entertaining season gets into full swing, now’s the time to get stuck into the garden, build yourself a premium patio space for parties or simply tidy up any less than picturesque corners. Greenery will play a huge role, but your choice of hardscaping materials is just as important. To create a look that’s natural and earthy yet polished, Tuscan Path has all the essential elements you need.

DOWN THE GARDEN PATH Landscapers often talk about creating a sense of journey, to invite one deeper into the garden. Whether you’re considering a whimsically winding path towards a secret glade or an appealing route to the service area, a pebble-and-paver path turns a Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

functional garden element into a sensory delight – and it’s an easy feature to DIY! Use simple pavers as stepstones and fill the gaps in between with grass or groundcover plants, or with Tuscan Path pebbles in a striking contrasting colour.

DESTINATION PATIO For a cohesive look, consider using the same pavers to construct a patio. Whether designed as a private retreat or the centre of the entertaining action, a paved patio is an eye-catching addition to your backyard. Tuscan Path porcelain pavers are beautifully tactile, durable (they’re even tough enough for driveways) and come in a range of colours and sizes, so you can get exactly the look you want.

GARDEN DECOR Some decorative accessories might be all your garden needs to take it from so-so to spectacular. Plant up a statement shrub in a stunning pot by the front door, or in a bare corner of the patio. Use a garden screen to create an attractive design feature – or to disguise an unsightly pool pump or aircon unit. To create cohesion in the garden, look for linking features in your accessories; for example, pair a weathering steel screen with a similarly rust-toned pot, like the Tuscan Path ‘Jasper’.

CLEAR BOUNDARIES If you do nothing else to zhoosh up your garden for summer, turn your attention to tidying up your garden beds. If spring growth is making your groundcover run wild or causing turf to creep into flowerbeds, a run of garden edging will solve the problem. Tuscan Path’s composite edging is made from recycled plastic and wood fibres, so it’s resistant to mould and termites, strong and durable, and able to be laid around both curved and straight beds. It can also be used to define a space around a statement tree or give a neat finish to pebble paths.

PLANT A FLORAL GARDEN

W

hether you’re picking, giving, receiving or simply admiring them, flowers can elevate your spirits and bring immense joy. But instead of waiting for blooms to come your way, why not grow your own? We’ve rounded up 12 expert tips from flower farmer, Sam Webb (@sam_and_wild_violet_ garden) to help you create a flourishing, floriferous garden. 

Swathes of beautiful dahlias in Sam’s garden are a feast for the eyes and a treat for bees and butterflies, too bunnings.com.au |

“There’s a certain romance in growing and picking your own f lowers, but it does come with hard work” Sam Webb, Wild Violet Flower Farm

2

Improve your soil

Healthy plants start with healthy soil. “Always improve your soil by adding plenty of organic matter, like compost and aged cow manure,” says Sam. Provided your garden beds have well-draining soil, Sam recommends using compost and manure as a top dressing, instead of digging them in. “This no-till method allows the soil structure to stay intact, which in turn leads to healthier plants and bigger flowers,” she explains.

Strawflowers are a perfect long-lasting, low-maintenance choice for a flower garden

To protect taller flowers, make a support structure with stakes and string

1

Choose with care

“Grow what you love, but remember to plant for your region and to grow with the season,” says Sam. “For example, dahlias are always planted after the last chance of frost – plant sooner and you run the risk of young shoots being destroyed by frost.” You may love peonies, but they resent the heat and will not do well in subtropical or tropical climates. Look to other local gardens for inspiration or head in store to see what’s in flower.

4

Plant in the right spot

Many flowering plants need full sun (6-8 hours) to thrive, but ideally there should be some protection from the hot afternoon sun. Some can tolerate more or less light, but always check plant labels prior to planting. Ensure the spot is also shielded from strong winds to prevent flowers from being blown over and damaged.

3

Give them a feed

“Once leaves start to form, begin feeding regularly with an organic liquid fertiliser that’s high in nitrogen, like nettle tea,” says Sam. This helps to promote strong leafy growth and stems. “But once plants start to bud, switch to a liquid fertiliser rich in potassium, like comfrey tea,” she adds. Store-bought organic liquid fertilisers will also help to boost flower growth.

5

10

Keep up the watering

“Give plants a good, deep watering,” says Sam. This encourages roots to grow deeper and helps keep plants well anchored. But take care not to overwater, otherwise plants can rot. “To check if plants need watering, stick your finger into the soil to a depth of about 5cm,” says Sam. “If it’s dry, then give them a good drink.”

6

Encourage more blooms

“Deadhead often to promote more flowers – the more you cut, the more it produces,” says Sam. “Don’t let plants produce seed, otherwise all their energy goes into seeding, rather than flowering.”

Protect with mulch

Once seedlings appear, Sam recommends covering the soil with a layer of organic mulch. “Pea straw or lucerne will help retain soil moisture and also add valuable nutrients as it breaks down,” she explains.

7

TOP TIP

Tackle the pruning

The feathery red leaves of amaranthus contrast beautifully with dahlias

The trick to getting bushier plants is in the pruning, which Sam applies to the dahlias that proliferate in her garden. “Once seedlings have three sets of leaves, I pinch out the centre to encourage side shoots. It prevents them from growing a tall central stalk and will promote more flowers too.”

8

Guard against pests

A thriving flower garden will attract both good and ‘bad’ bugs. “Bees will love it, but so will other insects like thrips and grasshoppers,” says Sam. If treatment is needed, try to encourage beneficial bugs or use organic sprays.

WHEN ARRANGING CUT FLOWERS, USE CLEAN, FRESH WATER AND MIX COLOURS TO VARY THE PALETTE

11 9

Stake when needed

Mix up plantings

Pair flowers with other plants to create drama and interest. “The vegie garden offers lots of beautiful textures for contrast – asparagus foliage is fine and fern-like and globe artichokes have striking, silvery-green leaves,” says Sam. Flowers can also be of benefit in the vegie garden, helping to encourage pollinators. “Cosmos and zinnia are the easiest to grow.” Scatter seeds over the soil and once they pop up, they’ll flower all season.

Some flowers – like Sam’s standard dahlias (left and above) – need to be staked. She supports large blocks of plants by running string between posts at the ends of each row. “This ‘corralling’ method is suitable when you have a large group of flowers but, for home gardens, stake plants individually using tomato stakes, star pickets or a metal plant support,” says Sam. Or you may prefer dwarf varieties of dahlias, which don’t require staking.

12

Get creative

“Planting in separate beds of hot and cool colours makes for an eye-catching feature, but I personally think beds look best when they’re randomly planted, creating a riot of colour,” says Sam. “Know the heights of your flowers too, so you know whether to position them in the centre or front of your beds.” 

FLOWER CHOICES

Dahlias are a firm favourite in Sam’s summer garden. “It’s hard to beat dahlias for style and wow-factor,” she says. “Gomphrenas are the best ‘bang-for-your-buck’ blooms.” They put on a prolific flowering performance and require little water once established. “Chocolate Queen Anne’s lace are cruisy flowers and will self-seed too,” adds Sam.

Use easy-to-grow zinneas to provide a long lasting show of bright colour

Keep in mind... If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. n Store all garden chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. n

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Always read product labels and carefully follow manufacturer’s safety instructions for use and storage.

Granule Bait could be key to solving the problem. Place the granules where you’ve spotted these unwelcome visitors, often near pavers, rubbish bins, drains, grass heaps, or places that provide them with a safe haven. This product can also be used indoors in cracks, crevices and voids, and covers up to 100m2. Once roaches and ants have ingested the granules, they return to their nest and poison the rest.

Yates® Home Pest Long Term Control Barrier Spray, $23.98/2L, I/N: 0205849

KEEP THEM OUT Once you’ve gained control over your pest problem, there are ways to keep them out. Roaches, ants and flies are attracted to food – open bags in the pantry and crumbs left on the bench will lure them back. Keep rubbish covered or sealed. Stacks of cardboard, magazines and newspapers, and humid areas, are breeding grounds for cockroaches. Seal any cracks they can sneak through and watch out for moisture, like leaking pipes or clogged drains.

GET SMART, SANTA! WITH A FEW TECH GADGETS, IT’S EVEN EASIER TO GET YOUR HOME INTO THE FESTIVE SPIRIT Words ADAM TURNER

S

mart home hubs can bring technology such as Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa to life this festive season. Use smart home devices to switch on the Christmas lights and dial up the festive mood, or to take your home’s guest-ready prep to the next level.

Light up your Christmas

It’s the perfect time to give your home a tech-savvy seasonal makeover, starting with your Christmas lights. If you’re buying new, select ones labelled ‘smart’ on the box – these will link to your smart assistant over your wi-fi network, so they can light up on your command. Or you can give your existing lights a high-tech overhaul. All you need is a wi-fi-enabled plug, such as the Arlec Grid Connect smart plug, which works with Google Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa and the Grid Connect app. Set up is simple. First, put your Christmas lights into your smart plug, then insert the smart plug into the wall power point and always leave it switched on. Now you can use a smartphone app to get Alexa or Google Assistant talking to your smart plug over your wi-fi network, so you can turn the lights on and off remotely.

Lights, music, action! Festive cheer can be controlled with a single command from your smartphone

A smart plug can turn any lights into smart lights, says Bunnings smart lighting buyer Rachel Holmes. “Just give the smart plug a simple name in the app, like ‘Christmas Lights’. Now it’s easy to control the lights using your smartphone – even when you’re away from home,” she says. “Even easier, just ask your smart assistant to ‘turn on Christmas lights’ and the lights will quickly spring to life, lighting up your home with a single command.” A smart plug can also act as a smart timer. Using the smartphone app, you can create a schedule that automatically turns your lights on and off every day. 

To keep it simple, give the routine a name that rolls off the tongue, like ‘It’s Christmas time’, and link actions like the ‘Christmas lights’ group, dimming the lights in the living room to set the mood and playing carols on smart speakers around the house.

More smart hacks

Set a routine Routines let you group actions and can be triggered by a single command to your smart assistant. For example, a ‘Good Morning’ routine can instruct Google Assistant or Alexa to switch on 48 bunnings.com.au |

For a fully automated home with voice control, consider a smart speaker paired with a smart hub the lights, forecast the weather, check your appointments and then play the morning news. “The beauty of routines is you only need to create that long list of actions once, then your smart assistant can perform them all with just a single command, to set everything just the way you like it,” says Google’s Matt Gaskell. To set up a routine in a smart home app, choose a voice command or other trigger and add actions you want to include. You can customise a routine for any occasion, says Matt. “Come Christmas morning, a routine can instantly light up the tree and play your favourite carols to set the perfect scene.”

Smart and secure Your doorbell is also likely to get a workout from the postie at this time of year. Intercept deliveries with a video doorbell, which lets you see who’s arriving and speak to them. If a visitor has less honourable intentions? A smart security system means you can keep an eye on your home while you’re out. Position cameras at key points around the house and set up an alert if suspicious activity is detected.

Ready to take things to the next level? “With an Arlec Grid Connect smart motion sensor, you don’t need to say or do anything – you can set your smart Christmas lights to wake up instantly whenever someone walks into the room,” explains Rachel Holmes. “Another option is to use the GPS features on your smartphone to automatically turn on your lights when you’re almost home, so it feels like Christmas as soon as you walk in the front door.” A single smart plug is ideal to control the lights on your tree, but if your Christmas lights are more elaborate, try an Arlec Grid Connect smart four-outlet powerboard, which allows you to plug in up to four sets of lights and control them individually. You can also control all of the plugs as one by creating a group in the smartphone app – call it ‘Christmas lights’. Another option is to make a smart home routine with multiple steps, which controls a range of smart devices around your home.

A high-tech welcome Smart home systems can greet guests with festive cheer. Ring doorbells can be set to serenade visitors with Christmas or Hanukkah tunes. If you’re out, a smart door lock allows you to let them in from wherever you are, using your smartphone.

E

veryone wants to enjoy peace of mind and minimise their chance of being a statistic, but you don’t have to lock the place up tighter than Fort Knox to keep your home safe. It’s a simple matter of working smarter, not harder – and you might be surprised to discover how hassle free and inexpensive that can be.

OLD-SKOOL COOL Sometimes the simplest, low-tech deterrents are the most effective.

Prickly reception

A sound plan

Creating a perimeter of gravel around your home makes it virtually impossible for potential intruders to approach silently. If a seamless surround of crushed rock isn’t practical, strategic stretches of gravel below access points like windows are a great start.

Thorny plants such as roses and bougainvillea are as beautiful as they are functional – their naturally spiky branches will make a potential intruder think twice. Plant climbing roses or position rose bushes near windows, where they can be your home’s prettiest security features. While roses can thwart unwanted visitors, don’t let them grow big enough to obscure entry points or create hiding places

The extra security offered by screens also helps to keep mozzies out

Window upgrade

Sure, glass can be broken, but window locks may still stymie burglars, who are less likely to make an access attempt that involves noisy breaking glass or the time and effort required to crack a window frame. Screen doors, available in a wide variety of colours and sizes, and which can be manufactured to spec if required, provide an extra layer of security. 52 bunnings.com.au |

Box clever

Don’t keep a spare key under the doormat! It is simple to install a wall-mounted key safe, and customise the access code to something you and the kids will always remember. If you’re renting, lock a portable version to a fence or handrail. bunnings

Deadbolts on exterior doors will make it harder for thieves to make off with larger valuables such as a TV, even if they do manage to get in through a window. However, for safety when you’re at home, leave the key in the deadbolt. If you need to leave in a hurry – for example, to escape a house fire – you won’t need to waste precious seconds fumbling for the key. If you’ve got a garden shed full of expensive tools, remember that a flimsy padlock can be snipped in seconds using bolt cutters. “Opt for a maximum-security padlock with a boron-carbide shackle,” says Steven Swinfield at Master Lock. “This is one of the hardest materials known, and it is nearly impossible to cut.”

Fortune favours the bolt

Button up

For maximum versatility, try a smart lock on your front door. If your rellies are already pulling into the driveway and you’re stuck in traffic 20 minutes away, you can simply let them in using your smartphone. Some models include traditional keyed access along with touchpad entry and wireless access, offering you the best of all worlds while also providing a rock-solid first defence against break-ins. A bluetooth key safe is another high-tech solution for keeping out unwelcome visitors while allowing those you trust to let themselves in. “Simply download the free app to organise access for people such as tradies, home-care nurses and cleaners,” says Steven.

STATE-OF-THE-ART SECURITY

One of the best things about modern life is all the amazing technology we now have at our disposal – including superlative security solutions!

The eyes have it

Today’s security cameras are simple to set up. Wi-fi connectivity allows you to see what’s going on from your smartphone, while units with motorised pan/tilt functions also let you point the camera at exactly what you wish to see. Many cameras, including those integrated into smart doorbells, include a two-way intercom function so you can talk to whoever you’re looking at. It’s just as useful for letting a delivery driver know you’re coming downstairs as it is to scare away someone acting suspiciously.

Spot-on security

Motion-activated outdoor floodlights have been around since forever, but today’s smart solutions are packed with bright ideas. Besides the outdoor sensor lights we’re all familiar with, many of which feature solar charging, smart globes are upping the ante indoors as well. Controlled via your home wi-fi, some can learn your natural patterns of what times of day, week and year you switch them on and off. Then, when you’re away on holidays, your lights will pretend you’re still at home!  bunnings.com.au |

SAFETY NET

Password managers and vigilance around downloads can help to keep your wi-fi router and home network secure

It’s just as important to protect yourself in the virtual world. Dr Anne Cregan at the International Organization for Standardization shares these online safety tips.

1

Avoid phishing scams by checking the domain names of email addresses and URLs match the real web address of the company. For example, if an email is supposedly from your bank but the sending address is a weird string of random letters, that’s a red flag. Use strong passwords that are difficult to guess – generally, the longer the better. Try sentences, like ‘Ihave2friendsnamedSally’ and use password management software to help you remember them. Before punching in your credit card details, check the website address starts with https, not just http. Keep your antivirus software up to date and use commonsense before downloading – if it promises expensive licensed software for free, for example, it’s probably not legit.

Think twice about asbestos

T

hinking about tackling a home renovation or improvement project? If your home was built before 1990, it can contain asbestos. From smaller projects, including replacing or repairing a fixture or fitting, to larger projects, including taking down walls, painting or ripping up old vinyl floors, think twice about asbestos. Here’s what you need to know.

With its serious health risks, this is one job you should never DIY Asbestos is common in old wall sheeting

WHY IS IT A PROBLEM? To put it simply, asbestos causes cancer. Inhaling asbestos fibres is associated with fatal diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. In fact, an estimated 4000 Australians die annually from asbestos-related diseases – that is more than three times the national road toll. Across Australia, asbestos is in one in three homes. Watch for asbestos in wall cladding and eaves

Asbestos-containing materials can be found in any room of the home as well as outside. It was used in thousands of different products before it was banned. However, you can’t tell for sure if a material contains asbestos just by looking at it - find out how to be safe by engaging an asbestos professional. Outside, asbestos can be found in roof sheeting and capping, gutters, gables and eaves. It can also be in water pipes, wall cladding, fences and carports. Inside the home, it’s common in wall sheeting (especially wet areas like the kitchen and bathroom), in ceiling sheeting and insulation, so take extra caution if you’re working on any walls around the home. Vinyl floor tiles and the backing of vinyl and linoleum flooring are also known to contain asbestos. Asbestos is dangerous if damaged, disturbed or deteriorating.

HOW CAN IT BE DEALT WITH? Caution and awareness are key to keeping yourself and your family safe. Dealing with asbestos is something that is best left to the professionals. Personal protective equipment will help reduce your risk to exposure, but cannot guarantee your health or safety. Know your limits – contact a licensed professional for advice.

uring the height of summer, there’s no greater luxury than walking into a well-chilled room, but blasting an old-school airconditioner takes an unnecessary toll on energy bills and the environment. Luckily, there are other solutions, including using next-generation devices, smart home design and careful harnessing of breezes. 

Fan fair

A fan can make a big difference to your comfort level. They cost about two cents per hour to run and reduce the ‘feels like’ temperature by 2-3°C** – until the mercury hits 30°C, when they just move hot air. Reserving airconditioning for 30°C plus days and using fans the rest of the time is one way to save on cooling costs.

Time to trade up?

“Running an older aircon unit could be costing you more than investing in a newer model,” says Jan Prichard of energy retailer Origin. The Minimum Energy Performance Standards mean a 15-year-old system uses around three times the energy of a new one to cool the same space*. To help you compare running costs, look at the energy label, which is now zoned to three different climates. The greenest option is to match your aircon to your space. Assess the room’s volume – length by width by height – then factor in insulation, its ability to gain and retain heat, and the local climate. Check out calculators online, or use Bunnings’ Measure and Quote service‡. 60 bunnings.com.au |

The eco way to aircon

In summer the aim of airconditioning is to feel comfortable, not like you’re in a supermarket dairy aisle! According to government website YourHome.gov.au, each degree below 25-27°C increases energy consumption by about five to 10 per cent. Try creating cool zones: rather than airconditioning the entire home, stick to the main living areas. Turn to technology. Activate devices before the house overheats and switch them off when a room empties. Smart devices can make this easier. Mitsubishi’s smart wi-fi adapter kit lets you control your microclimate using Google Home or Alexa, so you can, for example, switch it on while in transit for a cool welcome home.

bunnings

“A well-designed, energy-efficient home will require a lot less energy to heat and cool so it is often worth spending a little extra when building,” says CSIRO’s Michael Ambrose. Orient windows to face north and minimise glass on the west. Position doors and windows for cross ventilation. For existing houses, think about replacing solid doors or windows with louvres to maximise breezes, and fit flyscreens so you can throw open doors. Open windows to invite in cool breezes in the late afternoon, then ventilate the opposite side of the house to chase out warm air.

“For bigger savings, use aircon to cool single rooms instead of the whole house” Jan Prichard, Origin

Electrics 101 Know your DCs (direct current) from your ACs (alternating current). DC is the latest wave of fans, which are quieter and use up to 70 per cent less energy. AC motors connect directly to the power source, whereas a DC motor connects via an inbuilt electronic converter. Blades of glory Fans with fewer blades are quieter, while those with more create a bigger breeze. Reverse it For winter warmth, look for a fan with a reverse cycle program, which will rotate blades in an anticlockwise direction at a low speed to drive warm air down from the ceiling. Time your use Fans cool you by blowing across your skin, evaporating tiny droplets of moisture and, as such, they only work when you’re in the room. Fans with a timer, such as the Mistral pedestal DC fan, mean you won’t forget to turn them off. ThreeSixty’s Kirra ceiling fan can be operated by voice command or a smart device. Briony Mikrou of Kaboodle Kitchen recommends an independent laminate or timber top screwed from the underside of cabinet support rails into the benchtop. “Replacing your benchtop with the same thickness top and updating your tiled splashback at the same time will also make installation easier.”  Kaboodle squareedge profile laminate benchtop in Basalt

Worktop revival “To update laminate benchtops, one option is to replace peeling edges with new iron-on melamine in the same colour, or paint the benches with specialist paint,” says Natasha Dickins. “For a more luxe look, use a coating system like Rust-Oleum, which comes with the full kit to make old laminate look like new granite.”

timeless plantation shutters such as the DIY ones from EasyAS. Refurb flooring For a new look and feel underfoot, lay a floating floor over your existing lino or tiles. There are plenty of click-together laminate systems and, for improved insulation, invest in good foam and foil underlay. “For DIY installation, use a floor-laying kit and white rubber mallet that won’t leave marks,” says Natasha. ◆

Covetable cabinets If you’ve got modular sized cabinetry doors, Briony Mikrou says changing the fronts and end panels will deliver big impact, without the hassle of a full renovation. “One of the most sought-after looks is a Shaker style, which has a modern Hamptons aesthetic,” she says. To get the look, try Kaboodle’s Alpine profile. Update windows Enhance your outlook with new window coverings. ith the busiest time of the year fast approaching, now is the perfect time to take stock of the state of your house. There’s a good chance your floors may be looking a little worse for wear, but giving them a refresh might actually be easier than you imagine.

Budget-friendly laminate is “a fuse of melamine resin as the bottom layer, a photographic imprint of timber in the middle and a clear protective layer on top,” says renovation expert Cherie Barber (renovatingfor profit.com.au). ‘Click-together’ technology makes it relatively easy to install, and it can even sit on existing flooring. Pricier options include acoustic underlay and water, scratch, stain and burn resistance. Most laminates are not suitable for bathrooms and laundries.

Vinyl

Sheets can be tricky but, with a clean and level floor, vinyl tiles and planks are DIY friendly. “Vinyl tiles are like a sticker – you just rip the paper off the back then place them on your floor,” says Cherie. Many products can be used in the bathroom and laundry, using self-levelling compound to lay them neatly over tiles. Vinyl is easy-clean but can scratch or tear and discolour in direct sunlight.

Hybrid

NEED TO KNOW

“Ask yourself where the floor is being laid, how durable it needs to be, and if it will be flowing through multiple rooms,” says Bunnings flooring buyer Alice Philp-Taylor. Whether polishing existing floorboards or laying a new easy-DIY surface, stay true to the style of the rest of your home. Ripping up old carpet? Consider how much time and effort you’re willing to put in. “Your old carpet may be higher than your new flooring, so it’s likely your old skirting boards will need to come off as well,” explains Cherie.

Taking the waterproof qualities of vinyl and the looks of laminate, hybrid floor planks are perfect for creating a sense of cohesion throughout your home as they can even be used in wet areas. Most hybrid products are scratch and stain-resistant and easy to maintain, as the waterproof core means they can be wet mopped, while the click system makes for straightforward installation. “In terms of style, hybrid flooring is definitely the most versatile,” says Alice. It won’t buckle under direct sunlight and it’s also compatible with under-floor heating. 

“Your f looring is one of the most critical fixtures and fittings in any home update, because it is such a large visual mass” Cherie Barber, renovation expert

SHOP Solid timber

While installation of a new solid timber floor is best left to the professionals, bringing existing boards back to life is a task you can take on. “Real hardwood flooring can be sanded many times over,” explains Cherie Barber. Sanding, staining and sealing floorboards yourself is cost-effective, but you’ll need to allow 3-6 days to complete the project. Expect to pay around $50 per four hours to hire a floor sander, and don’t forget to factor in the cost of supplies such as sandpaper, sealer and applicators.

lant irrigation can be as fuss free as a 13mm poly pipe (the same thickness as a standard hose) running from the tap to your garden bed and around it. To enable water flow around corners, the pipe is cut and joined with 90° plastic elbows held tight with ratchet clamps. Once the pipe is laid, single drippers, which work like mini sprinklers, are connected via 4mm flexi tube. Work out how many drippers are required if set 300mm apart, and measure from the tap to the bed to determine how much pipe you need, adding a few metres to run around the bed. 

1 Run 13mm poly pipe from the tap to the garden bed, tapping in hold-down stakes with a rubber mallet to keep it close to the ground and tucked against structures to prevent tripping or cutting with a lawnmower. Tip: Uncoil and spread the pipe out in the sun to soften before working with it.

1 PRO TIP

CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL FOR RULES ON TIMINGS AND ALLOTTED DAYS FOR WATERING

3 3 Trim off the end of the pipe and seal with an end plug by pushing it onto the pipe, tapping with a mallet, and closing a 13mm ratchet clamp around it. Tip: Ratchet clamps help prevent the pipe from expanding in the sunshine and slipping off the connectors.

2 While laying the pipe, to avoid bending it around corners, use a cutter to trim then re-join with a 90° elbow, pushing the pipe fully onto both ends and securing either side with a ratchet clamp. Attach the pipe to the tap with a 13mm hose connector, turning it on for a couple of minutes to flush out any debris.

4 Working on one dripper at a time, cut a length of flexi drip tube to reach from its position in the bed down to the pipe. Twist the barbed joiner off the dripper and insert it into the tube, attaching the other end to the dripper. Tip: Place the assembled drippers on clean cardboard to keep debris from clogging the holes.

2

4 5 Using a 4mm drip punch, push a hole cleanly into the top of the pipe, taking care not to press through to the other side. Push the barbed joiner attached to the flexi drip tube into the hole to sit flush and position the attached dripper in the ground. Tip: Position the drippers in a 300mm-square grid.

n Rolling pin n Craft knife n Ruler n Short, flat craft brush n Masking tape n Baking paper n Air dry clay in white n Small vase, cup or bowl n Bamboo straws in various diameters n Two-part epoxy adhesive n Wooden craft sticks n Timber offcut n Paint (we used Dulux Pale Parchment) 1 Tape around a length of baking paper to create a flat, non-stick work surface. Condition a piece of clay by rolling it into a 50mm-diameter ball then flatten it into an even 5mm-thick circle with a rolling pin. Roll three equal pea-sized balls of clay. 2 Position the vase upside down on the clay circle, pressing lightly to leave an indent. With a craft knife, trim 5mm out from the indent to remove excess clay. Dip a finger in water and run it around the cut, flipping it over to smooth around both sides.

3

4

3 Working on the side with the vase indent, press bamboo straws into the clay to mark eight holes in a random pattern. Cut out the holes with the tip of a craft knife and smooth the edges with a wet finger. Leave the clay pieces to dry for 24 hours. 4 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to activate two-part epoxy adhesive on a timber offcut, mixing with a craft stick. Position the balls equally around the inside of the vase indent, secure with adhesive and leave to dry. 5 Using a flat craft brush, apply two coats of paint on both sides and around the edges, leaving to dry after each coat. Fill the vase with water, position the circle on the vase with the balls facing down and arrange flowers in the holes. Note: The balls prevent the circle from slipping off the vase.

1 With a pencil and ruler, down both ends of the pine, mark halfway (92mm from the sides) and 40mm from either side, then join the marks. On the top and base lines, mark along 65mm, 115mm, 165mm and 215mm. Along the centre line, mark 40mm, 90mm, 140mm, 190mm and 240mm.

3

2 Using a 4mm bit, drill 5mm-deep holes on the marks along the top, centre and base lines. Tip: These holes help centre the Forstner bit to drill the larger egg holes.

4

3 Clamp an offcut of timber on the work surface to protect it from drill marks. Centre a 35mm Forstner bit on the holes to drill through the pine, stopping before drilling through the offcut. Tip: To make the holes, hold the drill vertically and work at a medium speed.

Keep in mind... When using a drill, always wear eye and ear protection. n Always ensure that the finish you use on DIY timber accessories is food safe. n

Remove clips, thread dowel through the pulls and knot cord to create a hanging loop. Fill the pockets with treats! ◆

Cubby house makeover 1 Assemble the cubby house following the manufacturer’s instructions, pre-drilling the screw holes to prevent splitting. Smooth around the secured screws and any rough areas using 120-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block, then smooth around the windows and door with 180-grit to remove any splinters. 2 Use a mini roller to apply two coats of exterior paint to the roof, inside and outside walls, leaving to dry after each. Use a 50mm angled brush to apply three coats of white paint to door, window and roof fascia, leaving to dry after each coat. 3 (See pic A) To make 19 peppermint candy knobs, cut 43mm-diameter pine dowel into 30mm-thick discs with a mitre saw, smoothing around cuts with 180-grit abrasive paper. Working in a ventilated area, wearing mask and gloves, place knobs on scrap cardboard and apply two coats of white spray paint, leaving to dry after each. Using a small craft brush, make red swirls on the knobs and leave to dry. Seal with a clear, waterbased varnish and leave to dry. 4 Measure then position the knobs evenly around the

RESILIENT BLOOMS

Floral and hardy These drought-tolerant show stoppers can tough it out

Lavender

This wonderful shrub hails from the Mediterranean, so can handle hot, dry summers. There are many varieties and flowering forms, mostly in pink, white or classic lilac. French lavender (pictured) flowers for most of the year and copes well with subtropical humidity, while English lavender peaks in midsummer and prefers cooler climates.

White correa

A native shrub with a compact habit of silvery-green leaves, this correa is covered with white flowers in winter and autumn. It grows best in full sun but will also do well in part shade, and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it’s drought hardy and will tolerate some frost.

Position in full sun and welldrained soil. Grow as a feature plant in pots or as a low hedge.

Use as a small-medium shrub in relaxed, cottage-style gardens or clip into more formal topiary buns.

Rugosa rose

Salvia

Rugosa rose

Salvia

A gorgeous plant commonly available as a perennial, with some annual species, which has scented leaves that give rise to long spikes of tubular flowers in white, red, pink, purple or blue. To experience their full effect, plant them en masse in garden beds or mingle with hedges or other soft and loose plantings. FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Clusters of large single or double blooms appear in summer and fill the garden with colour and scent. Flowers may be crimson, pink, white or yellow, followed by attractive rosehips. Grow in well-draining soil in full sun, and prune after flowering.
