ave the primary colours and school-room brights for the flower beds; we’ve given three children’s cubbies a grown-up makeover with beautiful colours you’d be happy to brush on your own ‘big house’ walls! Each has been given a themed look – coastal, modern and traditional – and you might even be inspired by our schemes to give the main house a refresh. If you are, always opt for a paint that is specially formulated for your exterior surfaces, like Dulux Weathershield.

STYLE TIP Colours are made by mixing hues in different quantities, and it’s the underlying shade (called the undertone) that can make your scheme work – or not! Fixed items like decking or roofing materials can throw your colour choices out, so bring them into the mix too.

October

Daylight savings kicks in on Sunday October 4 in NSW, SA, ACT, VIC and TAS, so don’t forget to put your clocks forward. Wherever you live, make time to check the batteries on your smoke alarms, test them and replace if not working. A word from our editor

Words Amanda Ghalaini; (gardening to-do list) Tammy Huynh. Photography (editor) Sue Stubbs

What’s happening in

Paint schemes for exteriors seem to be even harder to pin down than interior colours. We spent ages painting bits of cardboard in slightly different shades of green, placing them around our house at different times of the day, before settling on a shade we love. But it saved us from a costly mistake! We hope you’ll be inspired for your own project by our cubby covers – as well as picking up tips for kids’ play spaces in ‘Tiny house trimmings’ (page 43). Enjoy the issue!

As seen in the June 2020 issue

DIY REMAKES Our projects in the real world

We love seeing your handiwork, especially when it’s inspired by a DIY from the pages of this mag! Take our upcycled crate project (featured in the June issue). Tash of @thecolourtribe created a colourful plant stand (below), while Ange of @eversohomely put her spin on the same project to create toy storage boxes that double as a mini play table (below, right)! Taking a look outside, our handy reader Bec of @thebargainstyler_ lit up her backyard with the DIY light sphere from our July issue (bottom). 

Using colour to inject life into her brick home, Tash went bold with pink, sky blue and lemon yellow as a contrast to the brown and to accent her furnishings.

GREYMATTER

WARM WEATHER INSPIRATION

The water we produce in our laundry, shower, bath and handbasins (known as greywater) is a goldmine of reusable liquid – important in our drought-prone country – but products such as soap and laundry detergent can knock soil pH out of kilter, affecting the health of your plants. Yates new Greywater Fertiliser is designed to help neutralise this effect, as well as adding helpful ingredients such as nitrogen and potassium to promote plant growth. Add 20-40ml to a 10L bucket of greywater and use it to water non-edible plants every two to four weeks.

For more on what to do in the garden during October, go to bunnings.com.au/garden-diaries bamboo stakes or, if you’re feeling creative, form them into an arch, so it doubles as a decorative garden element. Richgro ‘All Purpose’ vegetable and herb fertiliser, $5.20/2.5kg, I/N: 2961380 In most parts of Australia it’s time to plant that Aussie favourite: tomatoes. If you haven’t already, improve your soil with plenty of compost and organic matter. Check your local store for seeds and seedlings and get growing! Support climbing beans with a tripod or lattice fashioned from

rosemary and lemongrass in their own pots. Feed regularly to promote lots of new growth.

Yates ‘Rose Gun’ ready to use black spot and insect pest killer, $8.75/750ml, I/N: 0049614 Munns Professional ‘Buffalo Booster’ lawn fertiliser, $20.69/5kg, I/N: 0049346 Use a steel-tined rake to help remove lawn thatch, the thick spongy layer of excess roots around the base of grass. Then apply a wetting agent and feed with a complete fertiliser.

Feed roses and keep an eye out for black spot, thrips and aphids – treat if needed. Cut off dead blooms to encourage more flowers. Start a balcony herb garden with pots or troughs filled with basil, oregano, thyme and chives. Grow larger herbs like

Mr Fothergill’s ‘Giant Russian’ sunflower seeds, $3.72, I/N: 2960491 Start a sunflower challenge to see who can grow the tallest or largest sunflower! Try Mr Fothergill’s ‘Giant Russian’ or ‘Sunflower Supernova’. Feed fortnightly with fertiliser high in potassium.

Patch holes in lawns with a lawn repair kit or suitable seed mix. Ensure you water well – do not allow the soil to dry out, otherwise you will end up with patchy growth. Use a clean, sharp knife to divide and repot cymbidium orchids, especially if the clump has been unproductive or is bursting out of its pot. ◆

Linea Weatherboards

“We love the finished home. It’s part Hamptons, part Australian, but most importantly it’s all ours” Catherine, homeowner

GREAT OUTDOORS

Instant Hamptons Imagination and a good serve of James HardieTM products have taken this home from boring brick to American dream

C

hannelling American East Coast style was key to turning a dull house into one family’s dream home. “We wanted to capture the coastal glamour, openness and indoor-outdoor lifestyle of the Hamptons,” says homeowner Catherine.

UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS The dated brick exterior was rendered and painted a contemporary grey, but the second storey extension is what gives the home that chic Hamptons look. The elegant addition was made easier with the use of premium fibre cement LineaTM weatherboards; as it is lighter than brick, it allows for upward extensions without the cost of structural support for masonry. Contrast was created with an abundance of white

trim, including on window frames edged with James Hardie’s AxentTM trims.

BUILT TO LAST The family needed their materials to be practical. “In the Hamptons they use timber weatherboards or shingles that grey and deteriorate. We wanted weatherboards that are more durable for the Aussie elements,” says builder Damien Mitchell of DF Hoult Constructions. “The Linea weatherboards give us that same textured shadow-line look we wanted, plus they are lower maintenance than traditional materials, so less work for us in the long run.” Linea weatherboards are also resistant to damage from termites, fire and moisture.

A strong connection with the outdoors is a key element of both Hamptons and Australian style. Doubling the size of the existing rear balcony, the deck has been cantilevered out beyond the roof of the basement garage. Floored in HardieDeckTM, this has created room for an outdoor kitchen area and full living and dining set up. HardieDeck also helps to create continuity between the interior and exterior by mimicking the flooring in the indoor living area. The beautiful vaulted ceiling is lined in HardieGrooveTM. “The covered outdoor room is a must to make the Hamptons look work under our harsh summer sun. It also created an opportunity to add more of the layered detail you see in New York holiday homes,” says Catherine.

T

he colder the climate, the more dramatic the arrival of spring. We’ve taken inspiration from the northern hemisphere and the moment when winter gives way to the new season, reimagining it in an Australian setting. Starting with a typically Nordic palette of deep greys and an abundance of timber and texture, we’ve layered the scheme with light tones to reflect the return of the sun, and flowers to celebrate the warmth and promise of the new season. 

How to make them Pour your selection of decorative pebbles, either all the same colour or in contrasting layers, carefully into your glass vessel of choice to your desired height. Dream it Alfresco areas

Escape to the outdoors Creating a beautiful backyard from a blank canvas starts with careful planning. Read on for our 101 guide to garden design

Words Holly Byrne. Photography and styling Hazel Bondoc/The Style Société.

Before

Above: Homeowner Hazel @thestylesociete transformed this tired corner of her backyard with a few simple updates: built-in seating, on-trend paint colour, a timber planter, statement plants – and, of course, festoon lighting

T

he return of warmer weather brings with it a renewed desire to get outside to entertain, relax or reconnect. But is your backyard up to the task? Make the most of your space with our tips to help you turn a basic plot into the outdoor oasis of your dreams. Start at the beginning Are you a big entertainer? Or more of a keen green thumb? Whichever it is (and it can certainly be both), prioritising

what you want and how you will use your outdoor space should be your first port of call. “Make a list of your wants and activities and how important each one is – this will determine the function of certain areas when you start planning and designing,” says landscape architect Sophie Greive of Think Outside Gardens (thinkoutsidegardens.com.au). Consider the fun stuff, but also list what you need, down to boring necessities like the clothesline and shed.  bunnings |

Right: Sydneybased landscape designer Adam Robinson (adam robinsondesign. com) managed to create play, relaxation and entertaining zones in this compact backyard

“Sit down and make a plan, spend some time in your backyard and divide up the space into sections based on purpose and function”

Master your domain “It’s always best to start with a plan that has considered all areas,” says Sophie Greive. “Measure up the garden to scale (including the property boundaries, house footprint and existing trees) with a measuring tape, draw it up at 1:50 with a scale ruler, and start designing with this in mind.” At this point, give careful thought to the privacy, views and aspect of the space. “If you want to put in a vegie patch, the best place is somewhere that gets at least six hours of sunshine a day,” says Angie Thomas, horticultural consultant at Yates. Make tiny mighty If your yard is on the smaller side, narrow down your wish list. “In a small yard, you can still delineate the spaces and create different zones,” says Katrina Gatt, Bunnings fence, screens and gates buyer. Keep to a maximum of three to four different areas – think barbecue, vegie bunnings.com.au |

Lighten up When long lunches turn into evening entertaining, make sure you have enough lighting installed to make the most of your outdoor oasis. Layering your sources is the key. “There are certainly different options, such as lighting along pathways, solar lighting on pool fencing, or behind decorative garden screens,” says Katrina, who recommends planning your lighting early, but installing towards the end of the project so you know first hand exactly where you’ll need it most. Floodlights and wall lights are great solutions for larger areas, which will require more task lighting, while fairy lights and spotlights can help to highlight design features. For safety, consider outdoor strip lighting on steps and stairways. Always check your garden lighting choices are rated for outdoor use, and have any hardwired features installed by a qualified electrician.

Dream it

Highlight zone-defining levels by using a mix of hardscaping materials, such as pavers and pebbles

Tell a style story If your home is modern but you’ve been dreaming of a cottage garden, it is possible to blend aesthetics. “You don’t necessarily have to go off the style of your house for your backyard design. It’s not difficult to tie it together with a few contrasting items; look for inspiration with different garden designs and colour palettes,” says Katrina. Create cohesion with a border fence in the same colour as your home’s exterior, and let the landscaping speak for itself. “Different styles of plants can also create a different feel in a garden space,” adds Angie. “A warm, protected part of the garden could be filled with tropical plants, or for a completely different look, an exposed sunny location could become a home for succulents or Mediterranean-style plants.”

Zone definers

garden and lawn – as opposed to the five or six you’d fit in a large area. “Any structural divisions between those spaces you’d keep really low – for example, a low hedge, a low screen,” says Katrina. “Or simply use a pathway to break up spaces. You want to be able to look straight through a small yard so it creates the illusion of openness.” Start here Big-ticket features such as patios, paving and pathways should go in first. “If you have space when creating an entertaining area, allow not only for an outdoor dining table but also for a more casual seating area, as this will allow you more flexibility,” says Sophie. For foundations, choose between paving and decking, or a mixture of both to define zones. As decking is an elevated structure it’s ideal for uneven ground, but this can often require building permits. Pavers are wonderfully versatile, used for patios, or to draw you into the garden

along pathways or even through the lawn. “There is a whole variety of concrete, porcelain and natural stone pavers – concrete is probably the easiest option for a DIY customer to lay,” suggests Katrina. Lead the way A path can serve many purposes, from a design enhancer leading the eye towards statement pieces, to delineating zones. “The easiest materials you can use are small pebbles and stepping stones,” says Katrina. Timber sleepers, bricks and small pavers can border the path and help keep loose stones in place. “Low-growing plants along the edges of pathways will then help separate the hard surface from the surrounding garden or lawn,” adds Katrina.  “You may like to leave the final plant selection until after you see the garden bed sizes, to get the right proportions” Sophie Greive Think Outside Gardens

fruit,” says Angie. When choosing, consider the colours, style and materials of your house and hardscaping, and match those to the colours and types of the plants. “Earthy materials, such as rusted steel and timber, work well with different green foliage, and grey fencing, walls and structures create a beautiful backdrop for flowers,” says Angie. Plants with different types of foliage sizes and textures, such as long strappy leaves, delicate arching ferns and delightfully furry-looking leaves, can add another dimension to garden designs. Get playful For growing families, an exciting outdoor play space is the perfect antidote to screen time. Cubby houses and sandpits will keep them entertained, but they’ll also dominate the landscape, so look for corner real

Pick the right plants Flowers and foliage are among the first things you notice in a backyard, and one of the most crucial elements of garden design. “Look at the amount of sunlight and space you have,” says Angie Thomas. “Different plants are suited to different levels of light and take up different amounts of space, so observe your backyard to see how much light it gets across the day and then choose plants to suit.” Plants are functional as well as beautiful; they can help to provide shade, privacy and living fences. “Many plants can have multiple purposes too. Time to renovate Here’s how to keep your kitchen or bathroom project on track

ith a multitude of finishes and fixtures, plus specialist trades, kitchen and bathroom renovations require exceptional organisation. To keep on track, devise a schedule of works so you know what needs to happen and when. “Depending on the size and complexity, a kitchen project will generally take eight to 10 weeks, while a complete bathroom refit can take six weeks or so,” says Jonathan Hayes, builder and owner of Tailored Construction Group (tailoredconstructiongroup.com.au). Kitchen schedule 1 Demolition You’ll need an electrician and plumber on site to ensure all services are safely disabled, then demolition is carried out by labourers, often in a day. 2 Sourcing Before the final design documentation, source all prime cost (PC) items like tiles, tapware, sinks, fridge, ovens, rangehood, cooktop and the microwave. Check with the Special Orders Desk* about extended ranges and delivery lead times. “If there’s a particularly long lead time, you may want to choose an alternative product, or alter your build schedule,” recommends Maria Baron of Black and White Projects (blackandwhiteprojects.com.au). Make use of the Bunnings in-home consultant or visit a design consultant in store. If time is an issue, Kaboodle’s flatpack kitchen products are often available in store to take away. 3 Measure up Measure the kitchen dimensions before plans are finalised – seek help from an expert to ensure accuracy. 4 Stockpile on site “Get all PC items on site at least a week before work commences,” says Jonathan. “Check every item as it’s delivered to ensure all the components have been supplied and are free from defects.”

Need assistance with installation? Try the Special Orders Desk, where you can be connected with licensed, qualified trade professionals

5 Services ‘rough in’ Electricians and plumbers will return to lay out wiring and plumbing for the new layout with your chosen fixtures. Make sure items are accessible and you’re available to make decisions. Allow at least a day for each trade. 6 Cabinetry installation Expect this to take one to two days. 7 Benchtop/splashback installation Lead times for benchtops vary depending on the materials you choose. Orders for laminate are often taken at the same time

as cabinetry, while stone is measured and ordered once cabinetry has been fitted. Ask at the Special Orders Desk about installation of custom benchtops (stone, timber and solid surface) and glass splashbacks*. Fitting generally takes a day. 8 Fitting off Appliance installation (ovens, cooktops, rangehoods and dishwashers) needs about a day, as does the electrician to hook up the lighting. 9 Painting If repainting the area yourself, wait until all trades are finished. } bunnings |

EXPERT TIP “Do your research and shop in advance so everything is on site before work begins. This avoids having to make rushed decisions on the fly and potentially holding up the build” Maria Baron Black and White Projects

5 Services ‘rough in’ The electrician and plumber will return to position wiring and plumbing to suit the new fixtures. Allow a day for each. “It always helps to have a printed floor plan available on site, with a list of all your items, for trades to refer to,” says Maria. 6 Waterproofing This is at least a three-day process involving preparation and first coat, drying time and final coat. 7 Tiling and painting Depending on the size of your bathroom and tiling requirements, allow three to five days for tiling, says Jonathan Hayes. Then allow one or two days for painting. 8 Service/accessories fit-out Ask at the Special Orders Desk about tap and mixer, exhaust and heat lamp installation. “During the final fit-out, it’s worthwhile being on

site to specify the exact location of accessories like towel rails,” advises Maria. 9 Glazing The last piece of the jigsaw is the shower screen. These come in set sizes, however if you require a custom screen from a glazier, then allow for a longer lead time. ◆

Bathroom schedule 1 Hit the shops “Source all PC items and liaise with your plumber and electrician on the best types of fixtures for the space,” says Maria Baron. “If sticking with a similar layout, choose a toilet system that will work with the existing toilet system.” Also, organise any joinery that needs to be custom made. “To avoid building delays, get everything on site a week before installation,” adds Maria. 2 Source tiles “Get your tiler to quote the square metreage of tiles required based on your chosen tile and laying pattern, and allow an additional 10-15 per cent to cover wastage before placing your order,” says Maria. “Ideally choose tiles in stock, and allow three to 15 days for them to be delivered on site.” 3 Demolition Similar to a kitchen renovation, an electrician and plumber will ensure services are safe before the space is gutted. 4 Check measure/set out Once cleared, the builder will set out the bathroom, marking out locations for fixtures, and provide measurements to subcontractors.

W

ithout a doubt, sleek accessories are the unsung heroes of a stylish and functional bathroom, and even the most dowdy space can be given a new lease on life with refreshed towel rails, wall hooks and shelving. But in the past, updating your bathroom accessories meant using either suction accessories that can be prone to falling off the wall, or mechanical fixings that require you to drill into the tiles, both of which aren’t ideal options. Enter tesa’s range of high quality bathroom products. These use a patented German mounting technology that fixes to your walls permanently, but are also removable without a trace, making them perfect for renters and instant bathroom transformations. tesa’s accessories are so easy to install, of the best

quality, and require no tools, no suction technology and no drilling, meaning anyone can use them and you can refresh your space in just a few hours.

STEP 1 Prep your surface by wiping with an alcohol-based cleaner.

onto the adapter. Use the allen key to tighten the screw to secure the accessory in place. It’s that easy! To complete your bathroom refresh, just add textiles, plants and some storage baskets and you’ve got a picture perfect space. Make a splash!

Herringbone lay subway tiles

Bold or subtle, your splashback can play a starring role or the support act in the kitchen and bathroom

W

ith splatters of oil or sauce and heat in the kitchen, and steam, water and soap scum in the bathroom, the splashback has to put up with a lot. But it’s also an on-trend place to make a statement, adding colour, texture or pattern – or all three – to bring the whole room to life. “The splashback can ‘hold its own’ and be a wow moment in these spaces, or you can melt it back into the rest of the space,” says interior designer Jelena Radulovic of Karanda Interiors (karanda.com.au). “You can keep it simple and timeless by matching it to your flooring in order to create a neutral and/or chic space, or you can use it to enhance a design feature, whether it be your tapware, cabinetry, benchtop, mirror or feature lights.” Check out our three go-tos to help you make your own splashback selection.

For a similar tiled splashback, try Johnson Tiles 297mm x 97mm satin ceramic wall tile in Neutral White, $26.73/pack of 27, I/N: 0111658, and Davco ‘Easy Grout’ ready to use grout in Stormy Grey, $34.85/2L, I/N: 0066346

TILES

With a host of textures, patterns, sizes, shapes and colours, tiles can add instant personality to a kitchen or bathroom, plus they’re cost-effective and relatively straightforward to DIY if you’re handy on

the tools. The enduringly popular rectangular (subway) tile can be laid in all sorts of different ways, such as classic brick, vertical or herringbone (above), with some lays being more complex than others. Tiles can mimic finishes such as stone and timber, without

the maintenance issues of the real thing, while mini mosaic tiles can introduce striking pattern and texture. A gloss finish can bounce around light – good for dark rooms – while a satin or matt finish can help hide the odd smudge or water droplets.

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

GLASS

Practical and sleek, glass is easy to clean and comes in a rainbow of colours, effects and patterns – including mirrored – and is light reflective. It’s available in long panels, so you can usually avoid the issue of joins. “Glass can run directly behind cooktops as it’s non-combustible, is hard-wearing and can go behind a gas cooktop, unlike acrylic splashbacks,” says Ben Hughes, general manager at Composite Materials Engineering (Bellessi).

Words Caroline Botting. Photography (top) Anna Robinson, styling Tilly Roberts; (opposite) Sue Stubbs, styling Hazel Bondoc. *Not all products and services are available in all states and territories.

Going for glass? It must be installed by a professional and allow time to order it. Once glass is toughened it can’t be cut or trimmed to fit. “Install the benchtop first before a measure is done by a professional to ensure all the runouts and power points are in the correct spot,” says Ben. “If splashbacks are ordered before the benchtop is installed and don’t fit, they’ll need to be redone.” Custom glass splashbacks can be ordered and installed via the Special Orders Desk, but allow for an extended lead time*. 

Going for tiles? Make sure you buy more than you need to allow for breakages when laying. “We always recommend purchasing 10 per cent extra in case of unexpected repairs at a later date,” says Jelena. Tile grout can also be hard to keep squeaky clean. “Light-coloured grout can stain quite quickly – for example, flicking red pasta sauce on your splashback or hair dye and fake tan on your bathroom grout can be tough to remove!” says Jelena. Use a grout sealer to help to keep stains at bay for longer.

However in the Bellessi range we offer a colour matched toughened-glass panel to sit behind the gas cooktop and the acrylic either side of it.” Acrylic panels can be easy to scratch – although polish kits can help get these out – so avoid using abrasive cleaning pads and cleaners. ◆

Tip Lighter and more impact-resistant than glass, most types of acrylic splashback can be cut to size on site using standard woodworking tools Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. For more information, go to the Special Orders Desk.

The dark accent wall in British Paints Kara Sea contrasts with the main wall colour of Arctic Crossing, and is a dramatic feature of this modern home’s facade

Choosing external hues

“In Australia, we have such bright, intense light, we can afford to use dark and deep colours, which help to absorb and balance light levels, and situate the home comfortably within its surrounds” Rachel Lacy Taubmans chief coloursmith

DOS & DON’TS

Keep these considerations in mind.  DO understand the undertones of any exterior elements that can’t be changed, such as bricks and tiles. “Give yourself at least three days to make a decision so you can see the paint samples under different lighting conditions,” says Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr.

First impressions Words Vanessa Keys. Photography British Paints. Paint colours may vary on application. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

Colour is the easiest way to update the exterior of your house. Choose a scheme that plays to its architectural features with our expert tips

T

he colour of your home’s exterior can set the style tone for the whole house. But what to choose? Although there can be local restrictions putting some hues off limits (see below), the choice is mostly down to personal taste. “Pay attention to the colour schemes that stand out to you,” says Taubmans chief coloursmith Rachel Lacy. Starting points First consider the style of your home, its location, aspect and climate, and the neighbourhood. If you live in a rural area, there may be a requirement that your colour scheme blends in with the surrounding landscape (so pink walls are probably out!). Also, in some council

municipalities there may be guidelines or caveats on colours that can be used for the local environment, including BASIX in NSW and heritage overlays in other states. If you’re building from scratch, or planning a wholesale update of an existing property, put a call in to your local council to check. How to choose While walls are the main component, you may need to select additional colours for your exterior scheme to provide contrast and to highlight architectural features. Interior designer Kristin Stojcevski (roccorevolution.com) recommends a strong base colour for the walls, a complementary colour for the trim and a third contrasting hue for the accents. }

 DO think about the direction your house faces. “North-facing homes get lots of natural light, so your exterior will shine with cool whites, while south-facing homes work best with warm colours,” says senior interior designer Shilpa Mohan (jakaan.com.au). “If you’re east- or west-facing, go for a neutral white.”  DON’T choose exterior paint colours inside. “Painting samples on your actual exterior walls or features is the only way to view accurate colour,” says Andrea.  DON’T disregard your neighbours’ colour schemes. “You don’t want your home to look exactly the same as theirs, but you do want it looking harmonious,” says Andrea.  DO have some fun with your choices! “Once you start experimenting with colour, you’ll find it can be addictive,” says Andrea. “And you can change the accent colours when you feel like something new.”

TOP TIP To help functional elements such as gutters and downpipes disappear into the background, paint them the same colour as the roof or walls

1

Choose your base colour Work with your home’s character – modern homes look wonderful in dark greys, while light neutrals and soft blues will evoke a breezy, coastal feel. “Look to homes of similar architectural character,” says Rachel Lacy. “Take note of the colour schemes within your neighbourhood and surrounds.” If in doubt, go neutral, as there’s plenty of room to add bold accents.

2

Pick your trim “These days, it’s popular to go for a strong contrast for the trims, and crisp white or black are the best ways of doing so,” explains Shilpa Mohan. “I like to match trim with the colours of the windows – this way it looks like everything has a purpose.”

3

Select your accents Once you’ve chosen your base and trim, make it pop with an eye-catching accent colour on your front door, shutters and window frames. “A black or grey door paired with white can create a classic and elegant look,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr. “Or for the latest trend, try coral or terracotta accents against a predominantly white exterior, with black or charcoal trims.” ◆

6 COLOUR SCHEMES TO TRY Modern

The sleek shapes of modern homes lend themselves to monochromes – blacks, bright whites or grey tones – which hand centrestage position to statement architectural features or even a dramatic front door.

Coastal

A coastal palette often takes inspiration from the beach – think clear blues, sandy beiges and bright whites. Most of all, the feeling should be relaxed, warm and inviting.

Traditional

Use muted colours inspired by the past or give your traditional home a modern take with crisper hues. The most important element is contrast, to let the home’s architectural details shine.

“Some contemporary homes are an exception, as they have less detail in their design,” says Kristin Stojcevski. In this case, try one colour for the base and trim, and an accent for any architectural features. Before you commit to a colour, pick up a sample pot in each hue you’re considering. “Make sure you apply the paint in a couple of different spots around the facade,” says Kristin. “This way, you’ll get a really good feel for how each colour is going to look in shadowed areas, as well as direct sunlight.”

fresh coat of paint is one of the most transformative changes you can make to your home. Dull, tired exteriors can instantly be revitalised – plus it can add value to your home, if you needed a further excuse to get out the paintbrush. While your choice of colour matters, it’s equally important to select the right type of paint to withstand our tough Australian conditions. Dulux Weathershield has been designed to give your home the ultimate in protection; its breakthrough MaxiFlex™ Technology allows the paint to expand and contract. Dulux guarantees it will not peel, flake or blister for as long as you live in your home*.

BOLD TO BEAUTIFUL So you’ve made your product choice – but it’s a lot trickier to select your colour scheme! Location can be a good starting point; think sandy neutrals on the coast or sage green in the country, but you can also take into account your home’s architectural style,

TOP TIPS FOR A PERFECT PAINT JOB Mind the weather: You shouldn’t paint hot surfaces, so paint on cooler days (below 35°C) and follow the sun so you’re always painting in the shade. ● Paint from the top down: Start with the gutters, then fascias and eaves. Tackle the walls next, and trims and windows last. ●

PREPARE TO PAINT Depending on the size, surface, and condition on your house, with the right paint and equipment, you can save a lot of money by doing the job yourself. The final look will only be as good as your prep, however, so start by cleaning surfaces with a sugar soap solution. Any flaking paint will need to be sanded back or stripped. Just be aware that older homes may contain lead-based paint; check out dulux.com.au/ applicator/technical-advice/general/ lead-in-paint for further information. Asbestos may also be present, and this will need professional removal. Once your prep is done, it’s painting time – you’re just a few brushstrokes away from pouring yourself a glass of wine and admiring your new-look home!

Walls ready for a refresh? A pro-level job starts with a perfectly prepped surface

T

he secret to a quality paint job is in the prep. Okay, it’s not the most glamorous part of the task, but it’s one step you won’t want to skip. The work you put in beforehand will deliver you a finish to be proud of and, with help from Selleys, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. GET CLEANING Start by washing your walls. Selleys Sugar Soap cuts through grease and grime (if only all cleaning was so easy!). Put down a drop cloth to protect your precious floors and pull on some rubber gloves. Remove any nails or hooks from the wall, then use sandpaper to sand over any rough or flaky bits. Dilute some Sugar Soap in a bucket with water (as per packet instructions) and use a cloth to wash off any dirt, dust and scuff marks. Done!

2. TACKLE DINGS Don’t let dents and nail holes ruin your paint job. With a ready-to-use filler like Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Selleys Spakfilla Rapid, covering over the cracks is an easy job for any DIYer. Simply apply a small amount of Spakfilla Rapid to the included scraper and draw it across the hole or dent. Skim over the area in both directions a few times to push out air bubbles, then firmly draw down the surface, leaving a small amount of overfill. Allow to dry, as per pack instructions, then lightly sand smooth and brush off the dust.

3. FILL THE GAPS The last thing your beautifully painted walls need is a gappy border around every architrave, window or door frame. Selleys No More Gaps Multipurpose makes filling gaps so much easier, thanks to the easy-squeeze tube, and it’s great for getting into those awkward corners. Make sure you’re starting with a clean, dry surface – give it a wipe before you start. Cut the tip of the tube at a 45-degree angle and gently squeeze it into the gap. Use a wet

finger to smooth over the top and clean up any excess with a damp cloth. Give it at least 20 minutes to dry before painting over it with water-based paint, or allow 24-48 hours if using ceiling or oil-based paints. Now for the fun part: brushing colour on your beautifully prepped walls!

COOKTOP

DISHWASHER A good dishwasher is a must in any kitchen. When choosing, look for a model that offers flexibility with several different washing programs. Everdure’s 60cm freestanding model has six cycles, to tackle everything from rinsing glassware to scrubbing dirty pots. The other important factor is capacity – do you have a big family or do you regularly cater for a crowd? Opting for a model with a third layer for cutlery will give you more room for plates and pots in the bottom level.

Everdure ‘DWF146SC1’ WELS 4-star 13.6L/min 60cm stainless steel freestanding dishwasher, $570, I/N: 5103644

Induction cooktops have gone from ‘new-fangled technology’ to the preferred choice of many. They give an incredible degree of precision, they’re easy to wipe clean and very efficient, with all the heat going to your pans and very little escaping into the kitchen. But while induction cooktops are amazing and their streamlined profile is ideally suited to a modern kitchen, gas versions will never go out of fashion. Many home cooks prefer a gas burner, as it allows them to visually monitor the flame and adjust as needed. Gas burners are also compatible with all types of cookware (some pans aren’t suitable for induction).

OVEN

Everdure ‘OBES678’ 60cm side-opening built-in oven, $829, I/N: 5103669

Do you want a built-in version or a freestanding oven? Built-in ovens win on ergonomics, able to be positioned at a better height for viewing and handling hot dishes; for even easier access, go for a side-opening model. Built-ins are less bulky than freestanding, but this doesn’t mean you have to compromise on capacity. Everdure’s 60cm ovens punch well above their weight in useable space so you’ll never struggle with the Christmas ham again! If a freestanding oven is your preference, but space is limited, you can still have your first choice with an Everdure 50cm cooktop and oven. This appliance delivers all the bells and whistles, including two ovens (the smaller one has both grilling and baking options) and four hot plates, without hogging valuable kitchen space.

Tricks of the trade One of the best pot planting tricks is the ‘thriller, filler, spiller’ concept. “This works on the principle of the ‘thriller’ being the feature plant – a plant that is big, bold, textural or unique,” says Lyndall Keating, landscape designer, horticulturist and director of Garden Society (gardensociety. com.au). “The ‘fillers’ complement but don’t overwhelm the feature plant, and finally, the ‘spiller’ is added to tumble or overhang the planter to help to soften the edges.” Use this principle to guide your choices, but also consider plant colour and texture to create a balanced design. Group plants that share the same needs, for example, preference to full sun or shade or those that have similar watering requirements. Otherwise, warns Lyndall, you could quickly run into issues, such as infections from pests or disease, or ultimately the death of a plant. Let the container size determine the type of plants you grow, suggests horticulturist and Northcote Pottery brand ambassador Melissa King. “Squat bowls and shallow planters are ideal for displaying succulents, annuals, lettuces and herbs, whereas big barrels or tubs are perfect for showcasing larger plants like dwarf fruit trees,” she says. Ideas can come from the style of pot. “Certain pots give off a particular vibe – like country charm or coastal chic – so draw inspiration for the planting scheme from the colour, texture and design of the pot or vice versa,” says Melissa.

53

Bowls of succulents are ideal centrepieces: being low, they don’t create a sight barrier across a table

Pot basics When potting up, always use a premium potting mix. “They contain nutrients, fertilisers and wetting agents to give plants the best opportunity to flourish,” says Lyndall. If planting succulents or cacti, look for a free-draining cacti and succulent mix. Water regularly, especially in hot weather, as pots tend to dry out faster than garden beds. To help promote the life of your display, feed often. “Liquid feed potted plants every two to three weeks – you can also water in diluted seaweed between feeds to help promote stronger, healthier plants,” says Melissa.

Pots to purchase

Recipes for success Container gardens are a fantastic opportunity to get creative. Here are some of our favourite combos:  Shallow bowls are great for low-growing succulents. Create impact by planting up a large, black shallow bowl with blue chalk sticks (Senecio mandraliscae), or use larger succulents – agaves, flapjacks or crassula – as the thriller piece. Fill the gaps with a mix of smaller echeveria and sempervivum, and trail string of pearls, jelly beans or donkey’s tail over the sides.  Hanging baskets are reminiscent of the floral-lined streets of the northern hemisphere. Be inspired by that look and fill baskets with timeless red and white geraniums or a sweet mix of pastel-coloured calibrachoa, petunias and verbenas.  Large round pots are perfect for compact trees or large shrubs such as frangipani, dwarf fruit trees or cycads. For maximum impact, underplant with a cascading plant like Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’.  Tall narrow planters lend themselves beautifully to a formal garden style. “Fill with clipped buxus for a classic look or with striking, strappy leaved plants like phormium or cordylines to accentuate the tall, narrow shape,” says Melissa.  Large egg pots, particularly in grey or white, suit a single planting of a medium-large sized plant, especially ones with unique structure and foliage such as a golden barrel cactus or agave. “For a coastal-inspired display, team bronze grasses with silverleaved leucophyta (cushion bush), compact euphorbia and rosette-style succulents,” suggests Melissa. ◆

Banish bugs with our expert tips on halting creepy crawlies at the threshold

L

ured by warmth and food, brought in on the back of pets, or just flying indoors because they can, cockroaches, spiders and other insect pests are all too common uninvited guests in our homes. Take comfort in the knowledge that there is a veritable armoury of products and ideas you can apply to keep the bugs at bay.

American roach

German roach

The natural touch While we might end up resorting to chemicals, it’s worth giving these natural alternatives a try first. For a natural cobweb cleaner and spider repellent, fill a spray bottle with half white vinegar, half water and spray it directly onto cobwebs, then mop them up with a cobweb brush. For those that are hard to reach, use a cobweb broom to get right into corners. You can also try soaking cotton balls with a few drops of eucalyptus oil and leaving them in problem areas. Eucalyptus oil is also said to be a repellent to cockroaches – dilute a few drops in water and spray where you suspect they are congregating. 

Peppermint oil is another one cockroaches hate and a good alternative if you find the smell of eucalyptus too strong. For flying insects, try hanging flypaper and putting out static traps for flies. “The Hovex pantry moth trap is a safe and effective 3 way of dealing with these pests in the kitchen,” says Martin Sher, national field manager for Hovex. “It works as a lure and does not contain any poison,” he says. Pests are 4 attracted to the lure and, as soon as they land on the adhesive, they’re stuck fast. Outdoors, citronella is the go-to repellent for any mosquitoes threatening your evening entertaining. The citronella candle is a barbecue classic. Alternatively go for a tabletop oil burner or try burning citronella lamp oil in a torch for a tiki party vibe. An idea for bug-bothered gardeners is to experiment with insect-repelling plants. Catnip is said to repel mosquitoes (plus your furry friends will love it), while some herbs such as rosemary and basil may also deter flying insects.

A targeted approach If you’re dealing with an outright infestation, it’s time to call in the big guns. Chemical insect control products come in varied forms from powder and sprays to plug-ins. A generic insect spray is great to have on hand, but if you’ve got a specific problem – marauding ants or an intrusion of cockroaches – then a targeted product is the way to go. Ants are almost impossible to keep out, but if you can see where they’re entering, puff some low-toxicity insecticide dust onto ant tracks or crevices that the pests are using as access points into your home. If eight-legged fiends are invading your space, there are purpose-designed products you can rely on to fix the problem. “The PestXpert spider blast eliminator spray can be used to treat your spider problem directly or it can also be used to create a barrier where you don’t want spiders to take up residence,” says Lachlan Brodie, sales manager, environmental health division, at PestXpert. Only a few of the 400 or so cockroach species that live in Australia are household pests. American cockroaches (the big ones) and German roaches (the small ones) are the main troublemakers. A direct-action spray can deal with American cockroaches, and some are also suitable for use as a barrier spray to deter them from coming indoors in the first place – check the label and use only as directed. Cockroach bait stations can be placed under cabinets and behind large appliances to get rid 11 of the roaches you don’t see. 13 12

Plug in, pests out When it comes to electronic methods of insect control, there are basically two types: zappers and trappers. Both use a UV lamp to lure flying pests, with zappers eliminating them with an electrical grid and trappers sticking them to a glue board. While most electronic insect controls work by luring and eliminating, the Thermacell ‘Halo’ unit repels instead. This butane-fuelled device uses a heatactivated, insecticide-infused repellent mat to drive away mosquitoes from your outdoor area without the fire risk or citronella reek of candles or coils. An ounce of prevention Adopt a few strategies to deter unwelcome, many-legged guests.  Check for bug havens around the home, places where they love to live or breed, like standing water (ponds, but also blocked drains or full pot saucers) or an unaerated compost heap.  Make it harder for bugs to get in by installing flyscreens on windows and doors, and being conscious of keeping doors shut when flies or mosquitoes are active. Keeping surfaces clean and free of food will also help make your home less appealing to creepy crawlies.  Administering a long-lasting surface spray is a task worth adding to your spring cleaning to-do list. “Applying a barrier treatment around the home will significantly reduce the insect pests seen inside,” says Lachlan. Spray it at the start of spring, before peak insect season. ◆

Nourish to flourish Just like people, plants need nutrients to thrive, but which fertilisers or soil mixes should you use? Let’s unearth the options

f there’s one secret to bigger blooms or juicier fruit, it’s this: you need to feed! “Plants need access to a range of nutrients for growth and development, and applying fertilisers will help,” says Angie Thomas of The Happy Gardener (@angiethehappygardener). It’s just as important to nourish the soil. “Good quality soil provides the foundation for healthy root development and plant growth,” says Angie. Read on to learn the difference between fertiliser and soil mix options to boost your garden’s productivity. Get the dirt Soil improvers and fertilisers are not one and the same. Bagged compost, manure and garden soil are considered sources of organic matter and perfect soil amendments. They are used to enrich the soil, which, in turn, provides plants with the support they need for growth. “Mixing rich sources of organic matter into the soil increases water- and nutrient-holding capacity, improves structure and drainage, and encourages earthworms and beneficial soil microorganisms,” says Angie. It’s incredibly beneficial for your soil and plants to consistently improve the soil, especially if you have sandy or clay-based soils. “Mix them into the soil prior to planting or lightly blend into the top soil between seasons,” adds Angie.

Rich, well-draining soil that’s packed with nutrients is the key to strong plants and a good fruit and vegie harvest

Scotts ‘Performance Naturals’ soil improver, $11.98/25L, I/N: 0182066

Compost: a great source of organic matter, typically made from composted green waste and other decomposed organic materials. Mix into garden beds and potting mixes.

Fine Farms ‘Natural and Organic’ premium sheep manure, $6.98/25L, I/N: 2961066

Manure: contains plant nutrients, which are slowly released in the soil. Purchase bagged manure, rather than fresh, as it’s well composted, so won’t burn your plants. Dig well into garden beds prior to planting.

Yates blood and bone based plant fertiliser, $21.78/10kg, I/N: 2960191

Blood and bone: mostly made up of animal meal and composted manures, with a small amount of nutrients to gently feed plants, while improving soil.

Scotts Osmocote premium planting mix garden soil, $9.29/25L, I/N: 3010198

Bagged soil: ideal for filling new garden beds or topping up existing beds. An organic soil blend, typically enriched with slow-release nutrients. 

Make a free home-grown soil improver by composting kitchen and garden waste – compost blankets create a dark and moist environment

Feed with fertiliser Soil improvers do contain very small amounts of nutrients but don’t have all the necessary elements to provide plants with a well-rounded diet. Fertilisers, on the other hand, contain a blend of nutrients that directly affect plant growth and development and therefore are essential for a productive garden. “It’s important to use a complete fertiliser, which contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K),” says Bunnings garden care buyer Matt Wagner-Smith. Fertilisers are available in various forms, including pellets, liquid, powder and granular, all with varying feed times. “Gardeners can choose what format best suits them depending on how much time they spend in the garden and how familiar they are with the range of products available,” says Matt. “Liquid foods are generally fast-acting and need to be applied regularly throughout the season, whereas pelletised foods are generally slower release and longer lasting, so are needed only a handful of times throughout the year.” Always check product labels to know when and how much to apply. Fertilisers may also be organic, organic-based or inorganic (synthetic). Regardless of their nature, they all provide nutrients to support plant growth and improve soil health.

TOP TIP Soil pH value indicates its acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 1 (extremely acidic) to 14 (very alkaline). Most plants thrive in soil with neutral pH levels (6.5-7.5). It’s worth using a test kit to check your soil’s pH

Combining different surfaces is a great way to define outdoor zones; just make sure you use the right cleaning products for each!

Board revival Give timber decking a thorough clean and refinish once a year to keep the boards looking in great shape. Scrub well with a deck brush and a purpose-designed cleaning product, such as Cabot’s Deck Clean. Leave the solution on the boards for 10-20 minutes then rinse off with water. Once the boards are clean and dry, give them two or three coats of decking oil or exterior stain. Cut in around the deck’s perimeter and along the edges of the boards using a woodcare paintbrush, then use a lambswool applicator on the top. and replace them with screws. Choose heavier 12g stainless steel screws, ideally 65mm long, to ensure that the fasteners grip firmly into the joist. If you have an old deck, especially one clad with softwood boards, the sub-frame might be structurally sound, even if the decking boards are on their last legs. Individual boards might be worth replacing if only a few are badly affected by rot but, if the damage is extensive, it might be a better option to reclad the entire deck. “High-humidity tropical climates can lead to rot and mould growth, especially affecting cheaper pine decking boards that haven’t been well maintained,” says Elton King, head of sales at Ekodeck. “A visual inspection will usually be enough to reveal potential problems

with the sub-frame. If you see any rotted areas, cracks in the bearers or joists, or corroded fasteners, the sub-frame will need repair or rebuilding.” Assuming the decking sub-frame is in good condition, this might be a great opportunity to invest in and install composite decking made from recycled plastic and timber. Composite decking has a realistic wood-grain texture and comes in a variety of warm, natural colours. “The biggest advantage of composite boards is that you will never need to repaint or seal your deck,” says Elton. use a spray-on outdoor cleaner that you can connect to your hose. Leave it to soak in for 10 minutes, scrub with a stiff-bristled brush and then rinse it off with water. Once the paved area is completely dry, you can apply a sealer (check the product is suitable for your pavers) to help keep it looking pristine for longer. If smaller, brick-sized pavers have become wobbly over time, it’s best to re-bed them instead of simply brushing more sand between them. Lever up any loose ones, then sprinkle bedding sand over the area and screed it flat using a straightedge or spirit level. Tap the pavers back into place with a rubber mallet. To finish, brush bedding sand into the joints with a stiff-bristled broom.

Fix up your fence The most popular types of timber fences are clad with a single layer or overlapping layers of vertical palings or pickets, with a small gap between them. A leaning fence with rotted or split rails or palings can be a safety issue and will likely need replacing. But a couple of loose or damaged palings or pickets can easily be replaced or reattached. Palings are usually secured with nails, so will need levering off with a pry bar or wrecking bar. Pickets attached with screws will require a cordless drill or impact driver for removal. Cut the new paling or picket to size and align it into place next to its neighbours. If you’re nailing it back on, offset the position of each nail by a few millimetres to ensure it’s hammered into solid timber instead of going back into the old nail holes. Colorbond steel fences are tough and weather-resistant; generally, they’ll just need a regular scrub with a stiff-bristled

brush to get rid of any cobwebs, leaf litter and other gunk. Stubborn dirt will usually wash off with ordinary dishwashing detergent, but rinse it down with the garden hose rather than a pressure washer; the high-intensity stream of water can potentially damage the finish and will be extremely noisy on the metal sheets. Gate repairs The hinges on a steel chain-link gate can sometimes work loose over time, making the gate open crookedly and fail to latch properly. With the gate closed, align it so the gap on either side is even, and the top and bottom are flush with the rails of the fence, using bar clamps to hold it in place. Use a shifting spanner or socket wrench to tighten the bolts holding the hinge to the fence post. If you find any of the bolts are corroded or missing, replace them with galvanised or stainless-steel hardware. }

To prevent unwanted visitors making your shed their home, check for any holes, cracks or crevices and block them against mice or other small animals. It is termite-resistant and can be assembled on either a concrete slab or rebated purpose-built floor. “Putting a stain on the exterior of a cedar shed will help seal it more effectively, but there is no need for additional waterproofing features. Cedar will absorb moisture however it will not leak into the shed,” says Brandon Thrush,

Make light work of these common cuts with our back-to-basics guide to cutting mitred edges

B

eing able to cut mitre joints is a fundamental skill for a DIYer, and it’s handy for a number of home improvement projects. A mitred joint is usually made by fitting two cuts together to create a right-angled corner. The angled, square or bevelled cuts are made across the wood grain. Electric or batteryoperated compound mitre saws are great for experienced DIYers who tackle a number of large jobs requiring mitred corners, such as making timber furniture, laying floorboards or fitting skirting, but for smaller or infrequent jobs, a mitre box with handsaw will do just as well. Here’s how to use one. SAFETY TIP While the box captures most of the sawdust, it’s best to work in a well-ventilated spot out of the wind, sweeping up as you go. Wear eye protection and a mask

Cutting with a mitre box To cut accurate mitres by hand, use a mitre box with machined slots on both sides designed to guide a handsaw. Traditionally a tenon saw is used, with a flat blade that is long enough to fit across the mitre box, with teeth set for cutting against the wood grain.

Master mitres to make square cuts for butt-jointing, angled cuts for moulding and trim, and bevelled cuts for skirting

2

Set up on a flat, bench-height surface and secure the box so it won’t move while cutting. Some boxes have a lip at the front to overhang the workbench and prevent it from slipping forward. Some have a lip on the sides for clamping to the bench, or holes for temporarily securing to the bench with screws.

3

Position the piece firmly against the far side of the box. Match the cutting line with the slots and position the saw with teeth touching the cutting line on the waste side. Tip: Cutting on this side of the line allows for the width of the blade, usually about 3mm, which is removed as sawdust and is called the kerf.

Types of cuts Square cuts: For square cuts on lengths of timber, dowel or moulding, keep the overhang level by clamping an offcut of the same thickness underneath (ours is 15mm). Avoid scraping into the slots by keeping the blade horizontal when cutting.

Mark up the cutting line using a combination square and sharp pencil. When measuring pieces that have mitre cuts at both ends, make the first cut at one end of the timber, then measure from the longest point of the mitre.

4

Angled cuts: These are used on trim and framing. Position the piece with the flat edge against the far side of the box. Always cut over the front face to minimise wood-grain breakout. Bevelled cuts: Used on skirting boards or deck cladding. Use the slot at the end of the box, which angles the saw downwards at 45°. Smooth wood-grain breakout at the back of the cut with 120-grit abrasive paper. ◆

Cut by moving the saw to break the surface fibres and score a starter groove. Complete the cut by moving the saw back Bevelled and forwards to full capacity, without letting the tip pull through. Angled Let the blade do the cutting, without force. Tip: Stand facing Square the mitre box with feet hip-width apart, hold the piece with one hand and cut with the other, making sure there’s room for your arm to move fully and smoothly. bunnings |

othing stamps personality on a home like artwork, but it needn’t cost a fortune to give your home a unique look. Try framing a favourite fabric or scarf, creating a collage from photos or found objects, or even painting your own freehand design. To stretch the budget even further, try making a frame for your masterpiece – see over the page for instructions. For a professional finish, you could buy inexpensive mat board (from a framing store) and ask a glazier to cut a piece of glass (around 2mm thick) to size – take the frame with you to make sure it fits. Place the glass first, then the mat, then your artwork before finishing with the MDF backing board.

Have the backing cut in store to be the same size as your chosen artwork. Ours is 300mm x 400mm and the outside of the frame measures 435mm x 335mm. To cut a long side of the frame, make a 45° cut at the end of the timber length then, from the longest point, measure the length of the artwork and add 35mm to mark the opposite point (ours is 435mm long). Change the angle of the saw to make the cut in the opposite direction.

For the short sides of the frame, make a 45° cut at the end of the timber length. Measure the artwork’s width and add 35mm to mark the opposite point. Change the angle of the saw to make the cut in the opposite direction, then repeat Step 2 to cut the second side.

Your DIY toolkit 1 2

To cut the second side of the frame, make a 45° cut at the end of the timber length, then use the first side as a template to mark the second cut in the opposite direction. Tip: Position the framing in the saw with the face side down and the outside edge against the fence so the longest point of the mitre is at the outside edge. To allow for the thickness of the blade, position it on the offcut side of the mark rather than exactly over it.

To assemble the frame, dab PVA wood glue over the ends and position the sides together face down. Use four corner clamps to hold the mitres, wipe away excess glue with a damp cloth and leave to dry.

Remove the clamps and fill any gaps in the mitres with wood filler. Leave to dry, then sand with 240-grit sandpaper, smoothing along the edges and working over the mitres to remove any hardened glue or excess filler. Tip: Leave the timber natural or seal with paint or varnish, applying two coats with a small brush.

EXPERT TIP It’s worth investing in a picture-hanging kit suited to your wall type (with fasteners for plasterboard or masonry) which includes hooks, wire, screw eyes, D-rings and saw-tooth hangers for various frames

6

Turn the frame face down to position the artwork and place the MDF backing board on top. To secure the assembly with frame stays, use a 2.5mm bit to pre-drill holes at the centre of each side, about 6mm from the inside edge and 5mm deep. Install the supplied screws using a mini screwdriver. Tip: When hanging artwork, always use fixings appropriate for your walls. ◆

Tree of life Does your garden need more beauty? Add an element of delight with a feature tree Frangipani Nothing evokes the tropics quite like frangipani. In addition to the perfumed white and yellow flowers, they’re also available in variations of pink, orange, red and purple – buy when in bloom so you know exactly what colour you’re purchasing. Grows 5-8m tall and 4m wide with a beautiful open habit, making it a great shade tree in summer. Magnolia A magnolia in full flower is a truly stunning sight. The large, elegant, goblet-shaped blooms in white, pink, purple or yellow cover the tree and many are intoxicatingly perfumed. Deciduous magnolias come into bloom on bare branches in winter, while evergreen forms flower in spring and summer.

Frangipani (Plumeria sp. & cvs)

Magnolia (Magnolia cvs)

Grow in warmer regions in full sun in a large pot or in the garden, in well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.

Available in sizes to suit all yards, it will grow in most climates and is frost tolerant once established.

Jacaranda

Dwarf flowering gum

Dwarf flowering gum The neat, rounded habit of this native makes it a feature any time of year, but in summer, when covered with vibrant red, orange, pink or white flowers, it really shines. The blooms are followed by attractive, non-edible gumnuts. Cultivars vary from 3-7m in height and width, so check labels before buying. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Jacaranda If you have the space, consider growing this magnificent feature tree. It has an open habit with twisted branches that are lined with blue-purple hued blooms in spring, which eventually fall to create a magical carpet of flowers. It can grow between 10-15m tall and wide, or look out for the new dwarf varieties.
