OCTOBER

NEWS

Editor’s letter

Welcome!

S

ome months ago, I picked up a pair of bedside tables at the local recycling centre. They weren’t quite what I was looking for; they’re a bit low and the brown timber wasn’t my cup of tea, but they’re a nice shape, and well made. So I sanded them back, fixed on some new legs, slapped on an undercoat, and then... nothing. All they need is a topcoat and possibly some new handles, but they have been sitting unfinished

Born from the idea of regeneration and celebration, Wonder offers 11 summery pastels, accented by Dulux Vivid White. Each of the hues works with every other colour in the palette, so the hard work of mixing and matching, finding the right neutral and choosing accents that pop (and don’t clash!) has been done for you. he town of Yuendumu, NT, is home to Warlukurlangu Artists, a centre whose many artists have gained national and international recognition. Some of the artists’ work is now showcased on a range of 16 indoor pots available in store now – a project that will capture the attention of plant and art lovers alike. Using the artists’ designs and styles, the art featured is centred on storytelling, a way to share each creative’s knowledge of the land, events and beliefs of Aboriginal people – stories that have been passed down through ancestors for future generations. “This is a great opportunity to make our art and culture accessible to a wider audience. We paint to share our stories and culture with the world,” explains Cecilia Alfonso, Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal

Well grounded Build an earth-inspired palette of natural textures and sandy hues, with a curated collection of materials from Tuscan Path

Advertising promotion Tuscan Path’s porcelain pavers give the look of ‘Natural Stone’ with the durability of porcelain

ELEGANT ELEMENTS

J

ust like designing an interior, building a backyard landscape from scratch is all about selecting the right materials, layering colour and texture to create a cohesive scheme. One of the most effective ways to find inspiration is to look to the wider landscape – walk the streets, bush or coast, and identify colours, foliage types and raw materials that speak to you, then take these ideas home to your own backyard. Bringing a nature-inspired look to life with a palette of luxurious (yet cost-effective) materials is simple, with Tuscan Path.

Tough and maintenance-free, there are many reasons to love this material, but the main one is its gorgeous rust colour, which both stands out from and marries beautifully with a natural palette. Maximise the impact of this eye-catching material by using it in a stylish patterned screen; Tuscan Path’s ‘Leaf’ panel is a great example.

MADE BY NATURE An earthy garden look begins with sourcing materials inspired by nature. Let your plantings play the starring role and frame them with a supporting cast of raw elements, like warm timber, pale stone and smooth pebbles, such as Tuscan Path’s natural pebble mix. Keep practicality front of mind too. Natural stone pebbles paired with Tuscan Path’s porcelain pavers look wonderful and are durable, so they stand up to family living.

MAKE A STATEMENT Amid this soothing palette of soft shades, a contrasting statement piece will instantly draw the eye. One of the best ways to create a strong statement is with weathering steel. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Nature-inspired needn’t mean rough and rustic. To steer your earth-inspired landscape in a more sophisticated direction, add some polish and structure. Whether you opt for square garden beds or curved, keeping the edges defined gives a sense of calm and order. Use Tuscan Path composite edging to clearly divide garden from lawn – it not only looks tidy, but the combination of recycled plastic and wood fibre gets an eco-friendly tick. Pots are always a great way to accent your landscape and, against a palette of earth tones, plain white really pops! Tuscan Path ‘Catalina’ pots in a beautifully soft, matt white turn any plant you put in them into a stunning centrepiece.

Tuscan Path ‘Catalina’ 56mm x 46mm terracotta egg pot, $69.98, I/N: 0238836 1 Tuscan Path 20mm-80mm natural stone mix, $18.98/15kg, I/N: 3451809. 2 Tuscan Path 135mm x 6.1m composite edging in Charcoal, $54.98, I/N: 0238080. 3 Tuscan Path 1800mm x 900mm rust leaf screen panel, $117, I/N: 3042458. 4 Tuscan Path 600mm x 400mm x 20mm porcelain paver in Sand, $17.28 ($72/sqm), I/N: 0129319.

Perfect arrangement Create a unique living centrepiece, with a whimsical selection of succulents and a little help from Osmocote

S

ucculents, by their very nature, are cute and quirky – adorable names like ‘hens and chicks’ are well earned – so it’s little wonder they’ve become the botanical darlings of interior styling. Not only are they easy to grow, but most have striking geometric forms and come in a kaleidoscope of colours, making them perfect for a stunning centrepiece. Here’s how to make your own.

Photography James Moffatt, styling Tilly Roberts.

1. CHOOSE A PLANTER A shallow ceramic bowl or trough is perfect, but you don’t have to be conventional – anything that holds soil is fine. An eclectic collection of vintage teacups, tins or jars arranged on a shelf or windowsill, with a single plant in each, can be a great look. Add drainage holes if possible, otherwise take care not to overwater.

2. SELECT YOUR SUCCULENTS 1 Scotts Osmocote cacti & succulent premium potting mix, $12.57/25L, I/N: 2961490. 2 Scotts Osmocote Pour+Feed cacti & succulent ready to use fertiliser, $12.48/1L, I/N: 0162255. 3 Scotts Osmocote cacti & succulents controlled release fertiliser, $7.57/500g, I/N: 0168579. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Colour, shape, size and texture are important in any arrangement. Whether you’re going for a monochrome design, a multicoloured collection or want to mix plant heights, try to vary shapes

and textures. Or for a minimalist look, repetition of a single variety in a row of identical planters can be very effective.

3. GET PLANTING Succulents’ worst enemy is wet feet, so good drainage is a must. Add a layer of stones to the bottom of your planter and fill with a specialised potting mix like Osmocote Cacti and Succulent Premium Potting Mix, a free-draining formula that contains everything your plants need to thrive.

4. KEEP THEM HAPPY To ensure your succulents stay healthy, water sparingly when the top 2-5cm of soil feels dry. Feed with a fertiliser that is formulated uniquely for cacti and succulents and features low nitrogen for compact growth and resistance to insect attacks, and high potassium to help strengthen the plant. To keep your centrepiece thriving, use Osmocote Controlled Release Fertiliser for Cacti and Succulents, which feeds for up to six months, and give them a regular fortnightly boost with Osmocote Pour+Feed for Cacti and Succulents.

f you fancy foraging for food in your own garden, don’t let the size of your patch or the quality of your soil hold you back. Many herbs and vegies grow well in containers and by picking the right plants and giving them sufficient care, you can grow a productive edible garden on your porch. Plus, you’re in better control of the growing conditions – you can choose the most suitable type of potting mix and pots can easily be positioned to access sunlight. Dishing the dirt

Premium potting mix removes worry over contaminated or poor garden soil

Use a top-quality potting mix. “It’s designed to provide the perfect foundation for good growth,” says Melissa. “Many high-end mixes also contain added goodies like wetting agent, controlled release fertiliser, water-storing crystals, trace elements and growth stimulants to help get the most out of your potted displays.” Pots tend to dry out faster than garden beds, so you may find you need to water more often, especially in dry weather. “Just as with a garden bed, you should mulch containers and pots to help water retention, to insulate the soil and reduce evaporation,” says landscape architect Matt Leacy of Landart (landart.com.au).

Photography (top) John Downs, styling Kylie Jackes; Getty Images.

Consider likely spots for your container garden and plan accordingly. Most fruiting vegies, like tomatoes, eggplants and beans, need at least 6-8 hours of sunlight, but leafy greens and rooting plants can cope with less. Spinach, silverbeet, spring onion and beetroot are ideal for part-shade areas. Allow easy access to your pots for watering and harvesting. Be creative with their placement – plant stands, hanging baskets and wall mounts make great use of space, while a wheeled plant trolley makes changing their position effortless. “A distinct advantage of growing in pots is you can move them around as needed, shifting them in and out of the sun on the days when the heat is extreme,” says Melissa King, horticulturist and ambassador for Northcote Pottery.

Go to pot

Think about the size, weight and material of your containers. “Terracotta pots are timeless with their warm, earthy look and feel, but they’re also porous and will dry out faster than most pots,” says Melissa. You can use this to your advantage by planting them with herbs that like dry conditions, such as rosemary or oregano. Glazed terracotta or ceramic pots are sealed on the outside and retain soil moisture better, but they can be heavy. “If you’re putting pots onto a balcony, you will need to be sure you’re not overloading the weight limits,” says Matt. Plastic and fibreglass are lightweight options available in various colours. Be mindful when using them in windy areas or on high-rise balconies as, even when filled with soil, they can be overturned. Pot size ultimately depends on what you want to grow – too small and the crops could be stunted and may dry out too quickly. Large pots may be difficult to move around once filled with soil. Also, “Consider the end size and growth habit of your chosen plants,” says Matt. 

Almost all vegies and herbs can be grown in pots. “There are lots of full-sized crops, like chillies, capsicums and tomatoes, that do well in containers, provided there is room to grow and there is adequate support,” says Melissa King. You can’t grow full-size versions of everything, but there are options available in dwarf or compact forms. They may be shorter in stature, but there is no compromise on the size, quality and taste of the resulting crop. “There are also bush pumpkins, zucchinis and cucumbers that grow on short vines; and dwarf peas and beans, as well as tomatoes that cascade from hanging baskets,” adds Melissa. To help maximise space, try growing highly productive plants. “Loose leaf lettuces and silverbeet are fast growers and have similar growing needs, so it makes sense to plant them together in pots,” Melissa explains. ◆

Join the organic revolution! Organic gardening has never been easier, with Organic Crop Protectants

K

een to become an organic gardener but not sure where to begin? We asked the experts from Organic Crop Protectants (OCP) for tips on how to get started.

1. IMPROVE YOUR SOIL Organic gardening is all about the soil. Get that right and you’re halfway there! The first step is to add organic matter, like compost and manures, which will boost microbial activity and improve soil structure. Then test the soil pH to check it’s not too acidic or alkaline. Most plants prefer a slightly acidic soil of 6-7pH. Lastly, if your soil or potting mix has become water repellent, use OCP eco-hydrate to improve water penetration and attract moisture.

2. NOURISH THE PLANTS

1 OCP eco-oil insecticide ready to use, $10.93/750ml, I/N: 2961639. 2 OCP eco-seaweed soluble fertiliser, $31.15/600g, I/N: 2962031. 3 OCP eco-aminogro organic liquid fertiliser concentrate, $19.98/1L, I/N: 0012553. 4 OCP eco-hydrate organic soil wetter concentrate, $19.54/500ml, I/N: 2960288. 5 OCP eco-neem organic insecticide concentrate, $21.88/100ml, I/N: 2960315. 6 OCP eco-fungicide organic fungicide ready to use, $11.15/750ml, I/N: 2961901. 7 OCP Slasher organic weedkiller ready to use, $12.98/1L, I/N: 0189791. 8 OCP eco-shield organic snail & slug killer, $8.99/600g, I/N: 0273520.

Just like us, plants get stressed and hungry, and become more vulnerable to pests and diseases. Regular applications of OCP eco-seaweed will reduce plant stress and stimulate health. It’s particularly good on newly planted plants to reduce transplant shock and stimulate root development. OCP eco-seaweed is a powdered concentrate, which is more economical than liquid seaweed products. In addition, feed plants with OCP eco-aminogro liquid fertiliser. Made from recycled marine waste, the nutrients are rapidly taken up by plants to produce better growth, flowering

OCP eco-neem is for use on ornamental plants; not suitable for edibles. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Keep all garden fertilisers, insecticides and fungicides out of reach of children and pets.

®

and fruiting. It’s the perfect organic fertiliser for all plants, including natives.

3. PROTECT THE PLANTS Pest and disease problems often have people reaching for heavy chemicals, but there are effective organic alternatives. OCP eco-oil is perfect for killing sap suckers like aphids, mites and whitefly, while OCP eco-neem will also control chewing insects like caterpillars, curlgrubs and grasshoppers. Use OCP eco-fungicide to fix common fungal problems like powdery mildew, rust and blackspot. All are approved for use in organic gardens and are safe for beneficial insects like bees and ladybeetles.

4. CONTROL THE WEEDS Weeds steal nutrients and water from our plants and often act as homes for pest insects. Hand removal is one option, but if you’re time poor or have lots of weeds, spray with OCP Slasher organic weedkiller. It works fast, with visible results within one hour on most weeds. Best of all, it’s glyphosate free and non-residual, so it breaks down in the soil within a few days.

BANISH SNAILS AND SLUGS! New to the OCP range is OCP eco-shield organic snail & slug killer. Made with iron powder, these pellets will control snails, slugs and slaters to protect your seedlings and plants. As a bonus, when the pellets break down, they provide nutrients to plants and are safe to use around vegie patches.

FINISH THE JOB

DONE AND DUSTED

DO YOU STRUGGLE TO COMPLETE DIY PROJECTS? YOU’RE NOT ALONE. TRY OUR TIPS TO GET THEM ACROSS THE FINISH LINE Words KYLIE JACKES

I

t’s a common situation among DIYers of all skill levels. There’s an initial rush of enthusiasm as you launch into a new project, then motivation wanes and the job languishes unfinished. Perhaps the project was bigger or more complex than imagined, or you simply became time poor. To finish the DIY projects you start, prep work is key. Here’s how.

38 bunnings.com.au |

bunnings |

1

Assess the project

Whether you want to build a bookcase or repaint the house, the first step is to get your head around the scope of the project. DIY specialist Natasha Dickins of Little Red Industries (littleredindustries.com) suggests researching what to expect in terms of time, skills, materials and cost. “Chat with people who may have done something similar, watch DIY videos and contact trades and suppliers to gain as much knowledge as you can,” she says. With a thorough

bunnings

understanding of what’s involved, you can then map out a step-by-step plan to tackle each stage of the job.

2

Source the materials

Nothing grinds a project to a halt like running out of a crucial part or material, or not having the right tool, so plan ahead. “Work out all the required materials, choose paint colours, finishes and fixings, and ensure everything can be sourced before you start,” says DIY lifestyle creative Geneva Vanderzeil of

Factor in time-consuming tasks such as hand sanding, which hugely improves the result of a refinishing project

Collective Gen (collectivegen.com). If you don’t own the necessary tools or equipment, decide if you’ll buy, borrow or hire them.

3

Create a DIY zone

Set aside an area, like a section of the garage, where you can work on a task and store tools and materials. “If your work zone is accessible, easy to set up and pack up, it helps maintain your enthusiasm,” says Geneva. “It also makes it easier to pick up where you left off, particularly

if you’ve only got small windows of time to chip away at a project.”

4

Manage your time

Setting an achievable deadline and sharing the plan with someone keeps you accountable. To give yourself a realistic completion date, try listing the major stages, estimating how long each will take, then adding about half the time again, suggests Natasha. “Issues often crop up during DIY, particularly if you’re using a material you’ve never worked with 

“Sticking to one project at a time and keeping your workspace tidy helps keep the job manageable and safe” Natasha Dickins, DIY specialist

Take a tip from the tradies: mark up meticulously. If in doubt, remember the maxim, “Measure twice, cut once”

“To ensure a project gets completed, dedicate half an hour a day until it gets done. This will keep it moving forward, even if it’s slowly” Geneva Vanderzeil, DIY lifestyle creative

5

Share the load

Play to your strengths and outsource parts of the job that are beyond your comfort level or skill set. “If you’re building a deck, for example, and are not confident using a cement mixer but are handy with a drill, consider engaging a builder to install the posts and joists and save on labour costs by laying the boards yourself,” suggests Natasha Dickins. 40 bunnings.com.au |

It’s also important to know when it’s essential to call in the experts, she adds – plumbing, electrical, gas work and structural building must be done by a licensed, qualified professional.

6

Celebrate progress

Even well-planned projects can feel overwhelming at times, so recognise and celebrate the small wins and achievements along the way. This might mean treating yourself after a job well done or giving yourself a day off the tools. “Rather than simply looking ahead at what needs to be done, reflecting on what you’ve accomplished boosts your confidence and motivation to keep going,” says Natasha. ◆

Lending confidence Discover the value of working with people who understand where you’re coming from and are ready to invest in your dreams

“We tailor lending particularly for the self-employed,” says Cory, “so that covers a lot of builders and trade-related customers as well.” La Trobe Financial recognises that a self-employed person may find it difficult to present two years’ worth of financial statements, for a number of reasons. “Often, that means they’re left by the wayside where major bank lenders are concerned,” says Cory. That’s why La Trobe Financial treats you as a person, with real financial challenges but also real assets – a real-life human being, not just a box-ticking exercise.

experts are committed to helping with every step of the process. La Trobe Financial supports you to make an informed decision about what you’re planning to borrow against, sending out two independent, registered valuers to assess the property, obtain a highly detailed appraisal and identify any issues up front. “We start with a granular level of credit assessment,” says Cory Bannister, chief lending officer at La Trobe Financial. “Traditional banks often use what’s called a desktop or automated valuation model, which essentially says that in a given postcode, a four-bedroom house is typically worth so and so.”

new kitchen is a big investment, and ‘ageless’ style – aka, white pretty well everywhere – has been the unofficial renovation rule. But the old rules don’t consider the sheer joy a splash of colour can bring into our cooking environment. A sweep of colour can set a new kitchen apart, delivering a bigger return of happiness for the time and money invested. Ready to set your colour wheel in motion? Here’s how.  bunnings.com.au |

Say it with paint

Painting gives creative licence to have some low-commitment fun, and specialist paints can tackle everything from tiles to benchtops and cabinetry. Feeling adventurous? Dulux colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr suggests reinventing your kitchen island, walls or splashback in a stand-out colour. As always, it pays to do your due diligence with paint samples, says Andrea. “Move swatches around the space to view in natural and artificial lighting, and against fixtures, and keep samples up for a few days before you make that final decision,” she advises. You can give a painted kitchen a polish by going tonal – committing to just one hue in various shades and textures.

Front up

Coloured cabinets can be a look to live with for decades. The best way to get ahead of the trend curve is with rich, earthy hues that border on neutral; think olive green, clay pinks and buttery yellow. Briony Mikrou of Kaboodle Kitchen likes to see colour as an accent feature and suggests, “Use one colour for base cabinets and another, complementary finish for wall cabinets.” If you lean towards a Hamptons look, teal, moss and duck egg blue will take it to the next level. Scandi-style loves a pop of pink or sage, and country homes lean towards bush tones. 44 bunnings.com.au |

“The key is to use colours that complement not only the light in the room, but existing hardware and finishes” Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux

Products like Kaboodle’s Paint Your Own Doors range keep your options wide open. If you are going all out, coloured stone is having a moment, so try Kaboodle’s marble-look Santolina benchtops for a wash of seafoam blue on the island bench.

Look-at-me splashbacks

The splashback is where a kitchen reveals its personality. As Bunnings trend and design manager Jane Wright says, “Splashbacks allow you to express colour within a kitchen and, while it’s a permanent update, it can also be changed more easily than cabinetry.” Tiles are the go-to for adding colour, texture and functionality all at once. “Try adding earthtoned or muted blue or green handmade-look tiles to a neutral kitchen,” suggests Jane. Gain extra points for using a premixed coloured grout to play up tile patterns. Alternatively, pair a plain kitchen with a swathe of colourbacked glass for statement style.

Layer up with accessories

No matter which hue you choose for the big-ticket items, use details to continue your kitchen’s colour story. The pendants hanging over your counter, bar stools and cookware all play a part in building a palette. KitchenAid and Morphy Richards (available through Bunnings Marketplace ) have benchtop appliances in the hottest hues. 

As for tapware, Jane Wright says black, brass, gold and pewter all work with coloured kitchens, but coloured tapware is also on the horizon in colours such as sage green, clay, terracotta, indigo, mustard and white. Meanwhile, Briony Mikrou suggests swapping out handles to add interest, and recommends open shelving, with steel frame or layered timber shelves, as the ultimate pedestal for tonal ceramics, dinnerware and potted greenery. ◆

Fine lines

A cute cottage gets a sleek extension to stop traffic. With exterior cladding by James Hardie, It’s Possible™

REE OR FFO E E BB

Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding

W See Matt & Jane’s full story on JamesHardieAU YouTube channel

hen Jane and Matt outgrew their 1940s cottage, it was time to upgrade and expand. Inspired by an image found on Pinterest, the couple dreamed of an extension that would bring their home into the 21st century. “We didn’t want anything old and boring, we wanted something bold,” says homeowner Jane.

MODERN LOVE

To help get you started with your modern renovation, download the James Hardie Renovation Guide from jameshardie.com.au/renovationguide

The brief was simple: modern, clean lines, and plenty of natural light. Nestled on the south side of a hill, the home needed height to capture the northern sun; using Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding allowed them to build a soaring, steeply pitched roof with expansive windows and large doors that opened onto a decked

alfresco area. The home’s bold, modern design and abundant sunshine was everything that Jane and Matt dreamed of.

FACE VALUE Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding was chosen not only for its durability, but also for its fine textured finish and contemporary matte look. “The look is so much better than brick and at a lesser price,” says Jane. Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding also resists cracking, so Matt and Jane felt free to go bold with a punchy charcoal, Dulux Domino. “We’re just thrilled that a photo on Pinterest has taken us on a journey that has led us to our dream home.” Follow @jameshardieau on Pinterest for more inspiration

he air inside our home should be just as fresh as the air outside, but that can be a challenge to achieve if we’re keeping the place closed up, for example, when we’re using airconditioning in summer or containing warmth in winter. Poor air quality, helped along by all sorts of things, from cooking and heating emissions to chemicals, mould and dust mites, can affect our health. It makes sense to tackle the causes so we can all breathe easy! We’re sharing some tips. bunnings.com.au |

Install exhaust extractor fans Let in fresh air Any closed room becomes stuffy. If that same room has a gas heater or new paint, carpets or furniture, it’s also likely to contain a range of undesirable gases. Air out rooms during the day and open windows whenever possible to improve ventilation and help reduce any indoor air pollutants.

TIP IN BATHROOMS AND LAUNDRIES, IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE YOUR FANS HARDWIRED TO TURN ON WITH THE LIGHTS

Fit extractor fans These are a must in the kitchen, laundry and bathroom. They help to remove gases, create airflow and minimise moisture, avoiding mould.

Suck it up If you’re buying a new vacuum cleaner, pick one with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter, suggests David Furniss of the National Asthma Council Australia. “This traps nuisance dusts and materials, and potentially reduces asthma and allergy triggers,” he explains. “Vacuum all floor surfaces regularly.” Critical cleaning Use microfibre cloths to dust surfaces, especially those often-forgotten spots like windowsills and the tops of skirting. Eliminate dirt

5

Clean with microfibre cloths

Extractor fans in the bathroom help keep moisture in check and avoid mould, but must be installed by a licensed electrician

and dust from hard floors with a slightly damp mop, or try a steam cleaner for chemical-free cleaning. Regularly clean or replace filters and screens in vacuums, rangehoods and extractor fans.

Linen love Items like bedding and towels can harbour dust mites and dust mite allergens. Make sure they’re laundered at least weekly and use a hot wash cycle, particularly if you suffer from dust mite allergies.

Dry out Granulated moistureabsorbing products are a simple and effective way to reduce damp and humidity in areas with poor air circulation, such as wardrobes.

Add some greenery Indoor plants not only look wonderful – they can also help remove pollutants, a fact that has been backed up by NASA in a study of plants in space stations! ◆

Be VOC smart When you’re selecting anything from paints to carpet, cushions to cupboards, read the label and product descriptions for details on VOCs (volatile organic compounds; see box, opposite) and formaldehyde. If there’s no information about the product, check the company website.

While feather dusters tend to stir particles up into the air to settle later, electrostatic dusters attract and trap dirt, for better air quality Keeps Your World Clean WHAT ARE VOCS?

VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are present in various products, including carpets, some cleaning products and paint. “When you walk into a freshly painted or renovated house, often the odours you’re picking up are due to VOCs coming from the materials,” says Josh Plautz of Dulux. These odours usually diffuse over time and gradually disperse into the outdoors. Low-VOC paints are increasingly common. “A low-VOC coating is formulated to avoid the use of VOCs, meaning they won’t be present in the first place,” explains Josh.

Shelf life

The home office is a good place to capture the beauty and benefits of plants, says Kate Hewish. “Plants have been shown to help improve memory function and alertness,” she says. Pop some trailing plants on a tall plant stand or a high shelf for a cascading greenery effect. “It’s a great decorative solution when you don’t have a lot of space,” adds Bunnings style editor Tilly Roberts.

Strength in numbers

Grouping pots and planters creates a layered effect. For a cohesive look, choose colours in similar tones, or go for a single colour in a variety of textures. “Use plants in odd numbers for a look that is balanced to the eye,” suggests Kate.

4 Thriller, filler, spiller

The way you plant out your pots can also create layers of interest. Fill a larger pot with multiple plants to create a ‘thriller, filler, spiller’ effect, says Kate. “Start by selecting a taller feature plant – this is your ‘thriller’ which brings height to your arrangement. Then use a foliage or flowering plant under it – this is your ‘filler’ and helps to bulk out the space. Add a trailing plant to cascade over the side – this is the ‘spiller’, which gives your pot an established feel,” she says.

5

Bathroom bliss

“Greenery creates a lovely, decorative touch in more functional spaces such as the bathroom,” says Tilly. Group a few plants on the vanity, place a statement pot in a corner or hang trailing plants from the ceiling for a luxe health retreat vibe at home.

8 Let there be light

Position your plants based on their needs, as well as their looks. “Your plant babies need light to photosynthesise,” explains Kate. “They will do best in a room that’s light and bright, without having the sun focused directly on them, which might burn their leaves.” Work with darker spaces by sticking to shade-loving plants, such as Boston ferns (above).

Tomato ‘Granny’s Throwing’

Tomato ‘Granny’s Thr owing ’

One of Australia’s most popular tomatoes was actually a chance discovery by Diggers. Seed Savers Exchange in the USA shared 100 tomato seeds with The Diggers Club back in 1991. We grew each of these varieties in our trial gardens and selected the best to kickstart our Australian heirloom movement. ‘Tommy Toe’ was discovered within this seed and an Australian heirloom was born. From our first Taste Test in 1993 to today, ‘Tommy Toe’ has always rated top of the charts for flavour and texture and has become a garden favourite. Step up your herb-planting game with Bunnings’ Garden Corner, and be part of a growing community

I

f you’re making your first forays into the world of gardening, herbs are a good place to start. They’re generally easy to grow, rewarding to harvest and will save you big bucks at the supermarket. If you’re unsure where to begin, Bunnings’ Garden Corner can help. Think of it as a collection of crib sheets on every aspect of garden care; plus, all advice is handily customised to your climate zone, so you can confidently pull on your gloves and get growing!

TOP TIPS: ITALIAN PARSLEY n I talian

parsley has a strong flavour, but is less bitter than curly parsley. nT o speed up germination, soak seeds overnight or pour over boiling water after sowing. nP arsley dislikes being transplanted, so if possible, sow directly in the garden. nC are for your parsley by watering daily and regularly applying seaweed solution and liquid fertiliser.

TOP TIPS: OREGANO nO regano

prefers dry soil and achieves maximum flavour in full sun. nB efore transplanting, water the pot to minimise root disturbance and transplant shock. nA hardy groundcover, oregano is great used as an edging plant in kitchen gardens. n I t repels insects – but not aphids or slugs and snails, so keep an eye out!

TOP TIPS: ROSEMARY nT he

more sun and heat, the more intense the flavour and aroma will be. nP lant it with other Mediterranean herbs that also like dry conditions. nU se it regularly – this tip pruning will keep the plant nice and bushy. nW ant more rosemary? Leave cuttings in a glass of clean water until roots sprout, then pop into small pots. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

TOP TIPS: MINT this scrambling herb from taking over the garden by planting in a pot. nK eep it moist, especially if planting in full sun or a hot climate. n I f it dries out, it will quickly die back, but when watered, may reshoot from underground runners. nT ip pruning will keep it tidy, but if it’s too rangy, you can cut it back hard.

LEFT The gravel chosen here echoes the tones of the feature rocks and silvered timber retaining walls

Gravel and pebbles

For a quick, inexpensive DIY solution, laying gravel or pebbles is highly effective. “It suits cottages, fire pit areas and works well around stepping stones, yet it’s not for everyone,” says Ben. “The biggest drawback is weeds, weeds and more weeds.” To reduce their impact, Ben suggests hiring a compactor to form a robust base, then laying down a weed mat, topping with gravel at least 70mm deep. A border will help contain gravel and prevent it spreading into garden beds. Stone borders offer a natural look, while metal or plastic garden edging is more subtle; plastic is also good if you want to create curved areas or pathways.

F

looring is the basis for the style of any room, indoors or out, so it makes sense to consider your options carefully. Landscape designer Ben Wilson of Garden Constructions (gardenconstructions.com. au) suggests considering the look of your home and how you plan to use the area you’re covering. “Ideally indoor/outdoor areas should feel cohesive,” he says. “Look to materials in keeping with the style of your home.” Read on for must-know info on four flooring solutions, to help you find the right match for both your place and your pocket.

Pavers

Tuscan Path 600mm x 400mm x 20mm bluestone pavers, $18 each, I/N: 0129309

bunnings

Available in a broad range of prices, and with a spectrum of colours and patterns on offer, paving lends itself to countless looks and applications, from pool edging and pathways to furnished alfresco areas, says landscaper Mark Browning (markbrowning.com.au). “Porcelain pavers are a favourite of mine,” he says. “They’re durable and can replicate most natural stone looks – you just need to ensure they have a textured finish to prevent slippage.” Colour is also a key consideration. “Dark pavers tend to hold more heat, while light tones can be glary in sunny areas, so take your outdoor aspect and shade coverage into account,” adds Mark. While experienced DIYers might be able to take on small paving jobs, Ben recommends leaving larger installations like pool surrounds, big alfresco areas and driveways to the professionals: “Laying paving is physically demanding and without the right foundations it won’t stand the test of time.”

Timber decking is the ideal solution for creating access on uneven ground

Concrete

Once underrated in landscaping, functional concrete is gaining ground in the popularity stakes. “The range of colours is almost unlimited,” comments Mark. Concrete also gives you plenty of bang for your buck, adds Ben, who recommends engaging a professional contractor. “Ask to see their previous work, discuss what the best option is for your space and what’s required in terms of formwork and ‘boxing up’, which can add to the cost,” he says. Plain concrete is the most budget friendly, but styles range from burnished, finely trowelled and broom treatments to acid etched non-slip ‘pavilion finish’. The downside? “Concrete can wear over time and is susceptible to cracking, which is hard to repair,” says Ben. ◆

Decking

Timber decks are synonymous with entertaining and, with the ability to set your deck at almost any height, it can create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Although decking may be expensive, a big benefit is there’s no need to level the ground below, says Mark, who recommends a minimum clearance of 400mm off the ground to guard against damp. While many love the natural beauty of timber, it will need ongoing maintenance, requiring refinishing every two to three years to keep it looking its best. Alternatively you could allow hardwood timber boards to silver off naturally, or opt for low-maintenance composite products like Ekodeck, which require little more than a brush down and wash every so often. Building a deck from scratch is within the skill scope of an experienced DIYer. Otherwise, prefabricated modular decking is a good DIY alternative for a quick refresh.

“For the more budget conscious, concrete pavers are a practical option and come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours” Ben Wilson, landscape designer

1 Work out the pattern and size, then mark the area to be paved by tapping in a garden stake at the centre. Attach builder’s string half the width of the circle, holding it taut while moving around the stake to indicate the circumference with spray paint. Use a square-mouth shovel to dig out the area 130mm deep. 2 Spread road base with a rake and compact it with a tamper to be 35mm thick. In a wheelbarrow, mix up one part cement with four parts river sand, shovel it over the area and screed flat with a level to 20mm thick. Start laying the bricks, beginning at the centre and working outwards. 3 Lay the bricks one course at a time, tapping them into the sand-cement mix with a rubber mallet. Tip: The key to a completely flat paved area is to use a level to check each layer of material as it is positioned, adjusting as needed. Mix up one part cement with four parts river sand to sweep into the gaps between the bricks to halfway. 4 Fill the remainder of the gaps with small landscaping pebbles, extending them around the outside edges. Lightly hose the area to dampen the sand-cement mix, leaving it to cure. Tip: The mix dries hard to hold the bricks in place. ◆

Clean

Hose down your furniture to remove dust and debris, cobwebs and bird poo. Then scrub the timber with a timber cleaner, getting into any cracks and crevices, and rinse well. Tori Clutton of Feast Watson says a good timber cleaner is a must. “This will ensure your furniture is superclean and free of old oil, dirt or grease, and provides a good base to work from when applying your oil, stain or paint.”

SAFETY TIP

H

ave your outdoor timber tables, chairs or benches got the winter blues? Are they faded, rough or flaking? Growing mould or moss? Months of exposure to poor weather can wreak havoc, but all is not lost. Just a few hours of TLC – cleaning, sanding and recoating – once every 12-18 months will have them looking as good as new.

Sand and fill

Once the furniture is dry, sand back the surface, starting with 60-grit and ending with finer, 120-grit abrasive paper, until smooth. Wipe away all dust with a damp cloth. At this point, also replace rusty screws and fix any wobbles. Fill holes and cracks with a quick-drying wood filler, leave to dry, then sand again until smooth.

3

Recoat

“Make sure your oil, stain or paint is thoroughly stirred both before and during application to ensure a uniform colour,” says Tori. Place the furniture on a drop sheet and start applying your first coat. “Work in sections, going with the grain,” says Tori. “Remember to fully coat the edges and end grains of your timber. It’s also a good idea to start on the inside of the furniture legs first and work your way up.” A good-quality brush makes all the difference and light coats are best. “It’s important not to apply coats too thickly as this will take longer to dry and you won’t get the best possible finish,” explains Tori. “Sand very lightly between the first and second coats if necessary.” Finally, be patient. “If using paint or a waterbased stain, apply two or three light coats and let dry for 1-2 hours between coats. If using an oil-based product, leave to dry for 12 hours before the second coat.” ◆

FINISHING FINESSE

Brenna Mathews of Cabot’s explains how you can give your furniture a new look.

Oil “Outdoor furniture oil is designed to protect

your timber and enhance its good looks. The small amount of pigment in Cabot’s garden furniture oil complements the beauty of hardwoods like merbau, spotted gum and jarrah. These really look their best with a natural finish.”

Stain “Lighter timbers such as treated pine often need a bit more help. Like oil, a stain will help rejuvenate and protect timber, but has more pigment in it, which can transform the colour to give you the look that you want – modern, classic, coastal or contemporary – while still seeing the natural grain of the timber.”

OUTDOOR BENCH

1 To prepare the timber slats, smooth with a random orbital sander using a 120-grit abrasive disc to remove splinters and round over the edges, finishing with 180-grit. Apply two coats of outdoor furniture oil, wiping away any excess with a cloth and leaving to dry after each coat.

2 To make two pillars, set out the first rows of two blocks with holes facing up, 1200mm apart (measured from the inside). Use a builder’s square to keep them perpendicular to the wall while applying landscape adhesive underneath, between and along the top to secure the second row.

3 Apply adhesive around the top to position the third row of blocks with the holes facing sideways. Apply adhesive in the holes and centre the slats between them, pushing down to embed and leave to dry. Tip: The adhesive dries fast and saves having to mix up concrete.

4 Wrap tape around the base of the pillars to protect from spills. Wear disposable gloves and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to apply a row of expanding filler in each hole. Leave it for 15 minutes to expand, apply another layer and repeat to fill completely.

5 When the expanding foam has cured hard, use a mini hacksaw blade to trim it level with the blocks, smoothing the surface using a sander with 120-grit abrasive disc. Sweep up the foam pieces and brush over the pillars to remove dust. Tape around the slats, against the pillars, to protect them from render.

6 Half fill a bucket with render, gradually adding water and mixing to a toothpaste consistency using a 75mm scraper. Spray the pillars with water, then apply an even 5mm-thick coat of render, using the trowel to wipe it smooth. Tip: Use two buckets of render per pillar, mixing as needed.

7 Use a 75mm scraper to smooth over the corners and down the edges. Use a 38mm scraper to apply render neatly around and between the slats, feathering it into the larger areas. To render underneath the slats, lie on a drop sheet and use the scrapers to apply a thin layer.

8 Smooth all over the render with a damp sponge, regularly rinsing it clean in a bucket of water, while neatening along the edges and around corners, touching up underneath and around the slats.

9 Remove the tape and leave the render to dry thoroughly (at least two days). It lightens as it dries – wait for the entire surface to appear uniform. Brush to remove loose particles, then finish with clear concrete sealer using a mini microfibre roller. Tip: Alternatively, seal the pillars with two coats of quick-dry paving paint. ◆ bunnings.com.au |

1 Clean the table all over with sugar soap wipes. Using a caulking gun, apply construction adhesive over the top of the table and position the sheet of cut-to-size marine plywood, pressing it down evenly and flush with the edges. Work out the positioning of the tiles – our tiles fit without needing to be cut. 2 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to combine tile adhesive with water in a bucket, mixing it into a smooth, toothpaste-like consistency. Use a notched adhesive spreader to apply it in 5mm-thick sections, beginning at one corner of the table. 3 Position a tile flush with the table’s edge, add tile spacers and position the next tile. Repeat to cover the table, putting tile spacers between tiles for even gaps. Wipe with a damp cloth to press the tiles into the adhesive while removing the excess. Leave to dry.

4 Run the nozzle of ready-mixed grout along the edge of the tiles, using a damp sponge to smooth it into the gaps while removing the excess. Leave for 30 minutes and use a clean sponge to wipe away the grout haze that develops on the tiles as it dries. 5 To make the frame, measure the table length to cut two pieces of 65mm x 12mm pine with a handsaw. Working on one side at a time, apply construction adhesive along the plywood, clamp the pine flush with the tabletop and tap in 30mm nails with a hammer every 200mm.

•Timbers vary by state and territory; contact your local store for further information.

6 To finish the frame, measure the table width, including the frame sides, to cut two pieces of 65mm x 12mm pine. Apply construction adhesive along the plywood, clamp the pine to the table and tap in two 30mm nails into each side of the frame, and every 200mm along the ends. 7 Position painter’s tape on the tiles around the edge of the tabletop. Smooth over the frame with 180-grit abrasive paper, rounding over the corners slightly and wiping away dust with a damp cloth. Apply two coats of stain and varnish with a brush, leaving to dry after each coat. 8 Tape around the top of the frame. Apply gap filler between the tape, smoothing with a damp cloth to remove excess. Remove the tape and leave to dry. Finish the tabletop with clear tile-and-grout sealer, running the applicator along the gaps, wiping away excess with a cloth and leaving to dry. ◆

Keep in mind... When using a saw, wear safety equipment and always exercise caution. It’s a good idea to have a few extra tiles on hand in case of breakages. n The tiles and timber will make the tabletop much heavier, so ensure the table weight loading is able to support this. Enlist some help to move the completed project. n n

If you have a solid rafter at least 100mm square, but without access to wrap a rope around it, use a more permanent solution by installing two large screw-eyes with hammock hooks. To do this, pre-drill a hole with a 10mm bit for hardwood, or use a 9mm bit for pine, then twist the screw eye all the way in. Position the loops of the hammock over the hooks, or knot lengths of rope from the hook to the loops to lower the seat.

t’s the ultimate symbol of relaxation, but if you don’t have room for a full-sized hammock, why not transform one into a comfy hanging chair? We’ve used a special kit to secure the seat to two points on the rafters; if you do the same, just make sure the rafter is sturdy and safe enough to take the weight of an adult.

6 5 Use a hammock hanging kit to secure two hooks 500mm apart. Run the supplied cord around the rafter. Thread the lengths together through the figure-eight hook (A) and the clamp hook, over the sliding lock bars (B). Fold the cord up behind the bottom bar, thread it forward between the bars (C), then up behind the clamp hook to knot at the top (D). 6 Position the hammock loops over the hooks, ensuring the ropes are untangled. Twist the rail so the stoppers hold against the seat, tucking rope behind them to prevent the fabric slipping off. Gather the fabric along the rail evenly, and fold down the sides to minimise bulk. Place a firm cushion (ours is 450mm) in the base to help hold the shape of the seat. ◆

Keep in mind... Using a temporary hanging set means no need for drilling holes, so it’s a great solution for renters. n Ensure any fittings you use and the structure you affix the seat to can bear the weight of an adult. n

Adjust the ropes so the seat is about 450mm up from the ground (standard stool height) bunnings.com.au |

1 Assemble two 450mm one-door wall cupboards, following the supplied instructions, then position them back to back, clamping to hold. Tip: Leave off the doors to attach later and omit the handles.

2 Through one cupboard, using a 6mm bit, drill three pilot holes each through the top and base rails where the instructions recommend attaching the cabinet to the wall. Secure M6 x 50mm bolts with 12mm flat washers, tightening with a small shifting spanner.

3 Sand a 1200mm x 600mm x 18mm timber panel with 180-grit abrasive paper and wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust. Working in a well ventilated area, spray both sides and the edges with two coats of exterior clear spray paint, leaving to dry after each.

4 Position the panel upside down, flip the cupboard assembly onto it and use a measuring tape to check the overhang is equal on opposing sides. Using a 2.5mm bit, drill 10mm-deep holes through each corner of both cupboards and secure with 8G x 25mm timber screws.

5 With the assembly upside down, position swivel castors on the outside corners, positioning castors with brakes on opposite corners. Using a 2.5mm bit, drill 2mm-deep starter holes through the plates and secure with 8G x 12mm timber screws. Use a screwdriver to attach the doors with the supplied hinges.

6 Using the handles as a template, mark the holes on the doors, 120mm down from the top, drilling right through with a 4.5mm bit. Snap the screws to length to secure with a screwdriver. Centre a bamboo key rack on the side of the cupboards, about 50mm down from the top, securing with 12mm screws. 

BELOW If you have a portable gas barbecue, the cupboard could be used to conceal your gas bottle when not in use. Avoid placing food directly on a varnished or painted surface – always use chopping boards or plates

PLANT PICK

BEANS

Cool beans From stir-fries to soups, beans are a vegie crisper staple

French bean

Loved for its sweet, earthy taste, this climbing bean needs room to ramble, so it’s best planted in a bed with a sturdy trellis. Ensure the soil drains well and is enriched with organic matter and some lime. Sow seeds and water well, but don’t water again until germination. Try ‘Purple King’ or ‘Blue Lake’.

Borlotti

This attractive bean comes in climbing forms, but you can also find it as a dwarf or bush bean. This means it only grows 50-60cm tall and doesn’t require staking, so it’s perfect for pots. Position in a sunny spot and water regularly. Harvest young green beans early in the season or allow to mature on the vine for dried haricot beans.

(Phaseolus vulgaris)

Borlotti

(Phaseolus vulgaris)

French beans are widely grown and are prized for their productive harvest.

The characteristic red patterning of the borlotti bean comes with its maturation on the vine.

Butter bean

Snake bean

As its name suggests, varieties of this climbing or dwarf bean are velvety and rich to eat. Look for dwarf forms like ‘Cherokee Wax’ to grow in pots. Place in full sun with protection from wind and use good potting mix. Feed with a fertiliser high in potassium once flowers appear.

Snake bean

This strikingly long bean is available in both climbing and dwarf forms. Position in full sun and provide a sturdy support if growing climbing beans. For the best flavour, pick when young and tender. ◆
