In warm climates, plant tomato, eggplant, chilli, zucchini, beans and pumpkin. In cooler zones, wait until the chance of frost has passed.

Sharp edges make clean cuts, which can help reduce pest and disease problems.

Deter fruit fly by hanging traps early in the season, and spray foliage when flies are active.

If using garden products like fertiliser or pesticides around fruit and vegies, follow instructions, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating.

Bunnings Helping Hand is an annual initiative we launched with the AFL in April, designed to help community football clubs build and maintain facilities that are vital to their operation. Since the establishment of a national competition, the number of girls and women playing AFL has increased from 194,952 to 586,422. With such rapid growth, sporting facilities at community clubs are struggling to meet demand; in fact, a recent audit of facilities showed fewer than 30 per cent were considered female-friendly. With this in mind, the inaugural provision of Bunnings Helping Hand grants in 2021 have been entirely dedicated to the building and upgrade of infrastructure for female footballers. Congratulations to our state winners – each will receive $30,000 from Bunnings to complete their project.

It can be a sensory delight, with the mix of sights, sounds and aromas creating an immersive experience. “A sensory garden invites people to interact in and with the garden,” says horticulturist Chloe Thomson (@beantheredugthat). It can include elements to engage all senses, or you can simply focus on, say, sight and smell. By choosing plants with one or more of these characteristics, you will create a wonderfully stimulating and mindful experience.

Colour isn’t limited to f lowers. Foliage, bark, sculptures and hardscaping features should play a part, too

to make the most of different scents. But if you run into a time of year when there’s no fragrance in the garden, “go on a hunt in store to find a suitable plant,” suggests Chloe. Flowering annuals like sweet alyssum, stock and some petunias can fill the gap. Think beyond flowers – aromatic herbs, foliage plants and even fruit trees can take you through the seasons. “Lemon verbena, rosemary, oregano and thyme shouldn’t just be confined to the herb garden – pop them into pots near entertaining spaces so you can enjoy their scents when lounging outdoors,” says Chloe. For foliage, look to natives: aniseed myrtle (Backhousia anisata), tea trees, melaleucas and various eucalypts are ideal – check their mature height is suitable for the size of your block.

Colour therapy

Colour can greatly influence a space, lifting the mood and helping to create a lively area or making it soothing and restorative. While you can mix colours, getting the palette right will help bring about a more cohesive display. “Look to the colour wheel for inspiration and use it as a guide for your planting,” says horticulturist Sharon Fairbairn of Oasis Horticulture. “Hot colours, such as red, yellow and orange, are bold and energising; when mixed together they are absolute show-stoppers.” For a more muted palette, go for cool

The sense of smell is powerful and extremely evocative, but this doesn’t mean every plant in the garden has to be fragrant – that would risk fatiguing the olfactory nerves. “Allow strongly fragranced flowers like gardenias to stand alone as a specimen planting,” suggests Chloe. “This way you can fully enjoy and appreciate the individual fragrance, without bias.” Plant position is important, too. “Spaces that are confined can help capture and strengthen floral scent, so include fragrant plants in walled areas such as courtyards,” says Sue Edwards of Seasol. While some plants naturally release scent into the air, others need a little encouragement. “Position plants with scented leaves, like lemon-scented geraniums or rosemary, near pathways where they can be brushed to release their fragrance,” adds Sue. It’s also a good idea to include scents where they can be regularly enjoyed. “Under windows, along paths or surrounding outdoor seating areas are a few spots to consider,” says Sue. But don’t be afraid to think outside the box, too. “A lavender hedge planted underneath the clothesline brings unexpected joy when hanging the washing,” adds Chloe.

CULTIVATE & CARE

To help plants come into their own, put in the right spot and prepare the soil well for planting. “Many flowering plants need full sun to perform well, but some may be able to tolerate part shade,” says Sharon. Check the plant label to be sure. “Before planting, apply well-rotted manure and compost to the soil,” says Sue. “For a no-dig option, try a liquid fertiliser.” This will help improve soil structure and moisture retention, and give plants a solid foundation. During the flowering season, water and feed plants regularly. Deadhead or remove spent flowers often to prompt new growth. tones. “Blue, purples, soft pinks and whites are easy on the eye and are soothing to look at,” she says. To strike the right balance in your planting scheme, Sharon suggests using three colours that border each other on the colour wheel. “Repeating those colours in similar shades gives a sense of harmony to your display.” Use contrasting colours to create drama and impact; this can highlight features or punctuate a space. Silver-leaved plants are also perfect for this. The arrangement of plants should be considered, too. “Colour schemes can also be more effective when you plant large blocks of a single colour,” suggests Sharon. 

A riot of colour

It is possible to have year-round floral colour, but only if you plan for it. Spring bulbs like jonquils, daffodils and hyacinths offer colour and fragrance; zinnias, roses, dahlias, frangipanis and hydrangeas provide interest in summer and autumn; while hellebores, camellias, magnolias and wattles shine in winter. here are some homes that just make you go ‘wow’ when you walk inside. Not necessarily huge or expensively decorated, they still exude a sense of charm and individuality. Much of this appeal comes down to that elusive factor we call character.

For a new build or large renovation, architectural elements like architraves, cornices, doors and windows are key. Choosing the right trims throughout your home helps to provide cohesion in style and design. CSR Gyprock expert Therese Tarlinton says it’s important to start with the right proportions and detailing, before

layering elements such as furniture and decoration. “I think it’s about designing the envelope of the room,” she says. “A really great designer can make that room a beautiful place to spend time in even before the furniture has been placed in it.” Start by identifying the desired style of your home, and choose details to suit. 

Hamptons style

This popular look tends to rely on timber details painted crisp white, so they provide a base for a classic decorating style. Wainscoting (decorative panelling positioned on the lower third of walls) in hallways and formal living areas creates an elegant look. Shaker-style cabinetry is another way of evoking this style, while panelled interior doors can add character without fussy detailing. Other additions include tongue-andgroove timber panels on walls or even ceilings to add texture and interest.

Modern dwellings

The trick with a contemporary aesthetic is to add interest without fussiness, says Jillian. Contemporary homes work well with a shadowline ceiling, which is a small recess between the ceiling and wall made using a metal strip that is then plastered to a smooth finish. A more budget-conscious option is a shadowline cornice, which also leaves a recess against the wall. It can incorporate the mechanism for full-length curtains or a gallerystyle track to hang artwork.

Make a statement

Therese Tarlinton says that it’s worth playing with colour on architectural elements to add drama and personality to a modern home. She also points to the trend towards soft curves in modern interiors, especially with kitchen islands and staircases. “Right now, curved walls are all the vogue,” she says. “Luxurious curved archways and doorframes or a curve in a hallway that just rounds into the kitchen. It creates a much more natural feeling in homes because it removes hard corners.” ◆

Interior designer Jillian Dinkel (jillian dinkel.com) specialises in adapting period homes, often designing extensions for clients, or returning character to a home that has had detailing stripped out. “My first tip would be to refer to original details that still exist,” she says. “Look at any cornicing, doors and windows that are still original, and use that as a clue to choose other elements.” Jillian suggests bringing a piece of architrave, or photos of existing doors, in store to help source a match. 38 bunnings.com.au |

Comforting organic hues are making a comeback. A new colour scheme creates cohesion between the kitchen and adjoining dining space. “People can be scared of using colour, but it is an incredibly effective way to enhance the mood and proportions of a space,” says Lucy, who chose soft green Dulux Powdered Gum for cabinetry, teamed with warm

Bold accents pepper the space. “Black really grounds the scheme and can give a farmhouse kitchen a modern edge, so we introduced it through feature pendants and wall lights, as well as a black sink,” says Lucy. “People think you have to match your sink and tapware finish, but mixing a black sink with a brushed brass tap adds a little quirk and character.”

The room’s dated tiles and dreary work surface were replaced with contemporary white mosaics for the splashback, and distinctive marble-look Kaboodle benchtops. “My number one tip for splashbacks

een cook Virginia loves baking. But her old kitchen? Not so much. “We’d never had a rangehood, I needed more storage and I was over the timber cabinet doors my husband, Andrew, had made when we bought the house 15 years ago,” she says. “I thought they just needed to go.” But Make It Happen host and renovation expert Lucy Glade-Wright of Hunting for George (huntingforgeorge.com) had other ideas. “Virginia loved the charm of a farmhouse look, so we wanted to bring in that character and give it a modern touch,” explains Lucy. “This tied in perfectly with updating the existing timber cabinet doors which, although dated, were in good condition.” The country scheme also forged a link with existing furniture in the adjacent dining area, including a timber table and hutch that Virginia had owned for many years. “The kitchen had a good layout and solid bones, so it was a matter of determining what needed to be replaced and what could be refreshed with paint,” explains Lucy.

is to tile from the benchtop to the ceiling if you can,” says Lucy. “It always amplifies the sense of space, particularly if you’re using a white tile. Here the mosaics add a subtle, modern pattern for textural interest.”

Conceal and display

As an avid baker, Virginia needed abundant storage for supplies and bakeware. Several extra cupboards were added to boost capacity, yet one of the biggest improvements was reorganising the existing pantry. Dry goods were decanted into stackable containers, tiered shelf inserts added layers, and lower shelves were replaced with pull-out baskets, which allow for easy access to bulkier items. Removing shelves alongside the oven, in favour of a floor-to-ceiling cabinet, has also allowed small appliances to be kept out of sight. A few new open shelves have been installed to display greenery and treasured pieces.

Final flourish

A couple of furniture updates completed the refresh. For Lucy, the key piece tying the makeover together was the newly painted timber hutch that carried the Dulux Powdered Gum hue through to the dining area. “Updating it with contemporary brass knobs to match the kitchen cabinetry was a lovely finishing touch,” she adds. An open shelf, made from MDF and painted to match the cabinetry, adds a display zone

The dining table also benefited from some TLC. After it was sanded, the base was painted with Dulux Natural White, while the beauty of the timber top was accentuated with a coat of clear varnish. Virginia admits she was blown away by the impact. “Painting

Beyond thrilled with the fresh look and improved functionality, Virginia says she now spends even more time in the kitchen. “I wanted it to be a warm and inviting heart of the home, and that’s exactly what it is,” she says. “I just love it. When people visit for the first time after the transformation, the first thing they say is, ‘Wow’!” ◆

ood soil is the foundation for plant growth and will help your garden thrive. Not all types are ideal for healthy plants – some are too sandy, others have too much clay, and too much of one thing can impact plant health and growth. The good news is, they can be improved. Here’s how.

Dish the dirt

GO FOR GREEN

One way to introduce organic matter into your soil is with ‘green manure’, which is actually a crop that has been specifically grown in order to be dug back into the ground. You can use a variety of seeds, the most common being peas, beans, mustard, alfalfa, oats, or sorghum, but you can also buy a ready mix such as Mr Fothergill’s (see SHOP, right). As a form of organic matter, green manure breaks down and releases valuable nutrients. Simply remove any existing vegetation, loosen the soil and sow seeds. Water and care for the next six weeks, then cut the plants back and dig in.

First-rate soil “should drain freely, hold a good amount of moisture and nutrients, have a pH close to neutral (pH 7), and contain a mix of coarse and fine particles,” says Angie Thomas at Yates. “It should also be home to a healthy population of earthworms and beneficial microorganisms and, most importantly, be rich in organic matter.” This mix allows for water, air and nutrients to better penetrate the soil profile and be readily available for plants. Yet, soil doesn’t necessarily need all these characteristics to support a growing garden. “Soils can vary tremendously but still be very good for gardening,” says Dr Uwe Stroeher at Neutrog. Enriching the soil with plenty of organic matter is the key. “It helps sandy soils retain moisture and overcome water repellence, and reduces the rate of nutrient leaching,” he says. Similarly, organic matter improves the structure of clay soils too. “It opens it up, creates space and allows for the soil to be more workable,” he adds.

Cultivate variety

“Practise crop rotation and avoid growing the same crop in the same spot,” advises Uwe. “Growing the same plant in the same place can lead to a build-up of undesirable soil pathogens that can harm your plants.” If you’re not sure what to plant in that space, use a cover crop or green manure (see opposite). “Grow annuals or groundcovers in spare spaces in garden beds,” says Angie. They help prevent weed growth and soil erosion and reduce compaction. Mulching is good practice, too. “A layer of organic mulch, such as bark chips or straw, helps retain soil moisture and suppresses weeds, but as it breaks down, it improves the soil too,” says Angie.

SHOP CHOOSING A FERTILISER

Look at the types of plants you’re feeding and how often you want to be doing it. Always look for a fertiliser that has been formulated for your specific plant types. Flower and fruit fertilisers are higher in potassium, whereas ones for leafy greens are high in nitrogen and lower in potassium. Fertilisers are available in a variety of formats. Liquid and soluble fertilisers are fast-acting but need to be applied regularly, whereas controlled-release ones feed plants as they need and can last anywhere between six to 12 months. They will all provide plants with adequate nutritional support.

Break new ground

“Regularly incorporating organic matter into the soil is critical to improving and maintaining it,” says Angie. This means adding soil improvers like compost, aged manures and organic mulches. These contain few nutrients, but are high in organic matter. For a healthy and productive garden, use a combination of soil improvers and fertilisers. You can find products that contain a blend of organic matter, and have been boosted with fast-acting plant nutrients, providing a complete feed for your soil and plants. It’s important to note soil improvers are not fertilisers, however. “Fertilisers are formulated to provide a mix of the main nutrients plants require for growth – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium – and can be synthetic, organic or a mix of both,” explains Angie. ◆

here’s nothing more satisfying than growing your own vegetables, and spring is the best time to give it a go! Start your self-sustaining story with these easy-grow favourites for your best chance at a bumper harvest to brag about. Can you dig it?

1 Tomato

This warm season favourite is happy in a pot or plot. Most tomato varieties will need staking as they can grow between 1.5 and 2m tall, but you can find dwarf forms that don’t require additional support. Choose a spot in full sun with well-drained soil. Enrich the soil with plenty of compost, organic matter and a dusting of garden lime. Feed regularly with a high potassium fertiliser once buds appear.

2 Beans

For a fast-growing vegie, go for beans. Depending on the variety, you can start harvesting after as little as eight weeks. They need full sun plus space and support poles or frames to grow up. If you don’t have a lot of room, look for dwarf or bush beans, which grow easily in pots or small spaces. Add organic matter to improve the soil prior to planting and liquid feed with a vegie-specific fertiliser during the growing season.

3 Spring onion

This is one of the most rewarding vegies to grow, as all parts of the plant can be used for cooking. The whole plant – leaves and roots – can be harvested in eight weeks, but if preferred, you can leave the plant in the ground or pot and just snip the leaves as needed. Position in full sun, feed regularly with a fertiliser suitable for leafy vegies, and keep an eye out for slugs and snails on young seedlings. 

4 Pumpkin

This sprawling vine needs lots of space, so give it a dedicated spot. It likes to ramble across the ground, but will also grow over a sturdy trellis. If using a trellis, look for smaller varieties and provide added support for the fruit, like a sling. Choose a sunny spot and dig organic matter well into the soil before planting. To harvest, wait until the stalks become brittle and die off.

5 Chilli

Turn up the heat by planting a mix of these firecrackers. They grow into attractive, small to mediumsized bushes, with a few exceptions that can grow 1.5-2m tall. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Feed regularly and pick often to promote a prolific crop. Most grow as annuals (only lasting one season), but they can live on for a few years in warm climates.

6 Cucumber

There is more to cucumbers than the traditional store-bought ones. They’re fast growers and are suitable for both pots and garden beds. Plant in full sun, in well-drained soil improved with plenty of organic matter. Give them a trellis to climb, otherwise they will ramble over the ground. Pick regularly – the more you pick, the more they produce!

7 Leafy greens

These include lettuce, bok choy, tatsoi, spinach and mustard leaves. They’re all quick growers and the leaves can all be picked when young. Only pick a handful at a time, leaving most of the plant intact, and this will encourage more leaves to grow. Pick a spot in full sun to part shade and enrich the soil with compost. Sow every 3-4 weeks to prolong the harvest.

8 Beetroot

This root vegie is a staple in salads, roasts, burgers and sandwiches, so it’s worth growing. If starting from seed, soak the hard seed in water the night before planting. Grow in full sun with well-drained soil. Dig in aged manures or compost and fork well to help break up the soil. It can take 8-10 weeks to harvest the root, but you can enjoy the leaves sooner. 9 Parsnip

This underrated vegie has a sweet, nutty flavour and can be used in place of potatoes or carrots. Choose a sunny spot with welldrained soil and enrich with aged manure and compost. Dig the soil over well to help break it up so it’s loose and crumbly. Sow fresh seed, as germination can be poor if the seed is old. If growing in pots, choose one at least 600mm wide and deep. And be patient – it can take 18 weeks before they’re ready.

10 Silverbeet

This versatile veg grows in pots or beds and has a long harvest window. Plant in full sun or part shade, and feed with a fertiliser high in nitrogen. To harvest, grab the stalk near the base, twist and pull. ◆

Apart from hygiene reasons, cleaning your barbecue also reduces the chance of it catching fire and ensures your food doesn’t taste of whatever you cooked three months ago. “Maintaining your barbecue by regularly cleaning the grill and hot plates is essential,” says Diana Dulevski, of Mayo Hardware. “This will prevent the build-up of grease and residue, reduce the risk of flare-ups, prevent food from sticking to the surface and prolong the barbecue’s life.”

Details, details

Hotplates “Cleaning the plates when they’re hot will make your job so much easier,” says Matt Hoffmann, Bunnings barbecue buyer. “Turn the barbecue up high and scrape the plates with a metal spatula or a scraper to remove remnants of past cook-ups. When it has cooled, use paper towels or a ball of newspaper to wipe up the mess.” For a deep clean, Diana suggests using a grill block. “This is made from 100 per cent recycled glass and is environmentally friendly and nontoxic,” she says. “The block moulds itself to the barbecue grill, removing built-up grime left between the grill bars. Keep one side for your grates and the other for your hot plate.” Rust “Rusty hotplates are also best cleaned when hot, using your metal scraper, cooking oil, paper towels and a grill stone block,” says Matt. “Heat the plate, then rub the surface with regular cooking oil and the grill stone. Turn off and wipe up with paper towel or newspaper when cool. Repeat until all rust is gone.” Baking soda sprinkled onto the hot surface and wiped up when it stops fizzing can also help. Grills and grates These are also best cleaned after heating the barbecue. Then turn it off and scrub with a grill rake or brush. You can also leave grates overnight in hot soapy water,

then scrub with a sponge, rinse and dry, and replace. But note – cast iron grills shouldn’t be soaked, as this can promote rust. Instead, make up a thick paste of baking soda, salt and water, apply with a sponge and leave for about 20 minutes. Scrub off with a brush and then wipe or spray lightly with cooking oil to discourage rust. Barbecue burners “Ensure the gas is turned off and disconnect the tank before cleaning,” says Matt. Remove all the grills, grates, trays and burners and clean any food or dirt from the burner tube with a brush. Use a pin, toothpick or cleaning rod to ensure the holes in the burners are free of debris. Replaceable parts Check for damaged or corroded parts and replace those you can. Particularly look at the flame tamers, which are often damaged by use or salty air. It’s crucial to replace damaged flame tamers to minimise the risk of fire.

There will come a time when your barbecue simply won’t respond to any amount of TLC. So, how will you know when you need a new one? “When your barbecue will no longer light, the hoses or fuel lines are cracked, or if it is leaking gas or the regulator is broken, then it’s definitely time to replace it,” says Diana Dulevski. “Anything to do with gas can become a safety issue if not addressed urgently.” Other telltale signs include the following. n The flame distribution becomes uneven. n Your barbecue doesn’t maintain temperature. n Replacing parts becomes more expensive than buying a new barbecue. n There’s damage to parts you can’t replace; for example, the hood, doors, side shelves, the main firebox, glass window inserts and drip trays (in gas barbecues). n Your barbecue is too big or too small for your needs.

Maintenance

To keep your barbecue in good condition, give it a bit of TLC after each use. “Every time you use your barbecue, burn off all the remaining grease afterwards and clean the surface. For hot plates, use a scraper, scrubber and/or barbecue wipes,” says Diana. For grill grates, use a grill rake or grill brush to get into gaps and hard-to-reach corners. “Replace the fat absorber in the drip tray regularly to avoid it becoming a fire hazard,” adds Diana. ◆

Under pressure

A high-pressure cleaner will help to get things sparkling without wasting water, and you can spot clean any marks with a trigger nozzle. It will tackle stains, mould and algae with ease, but make sure you use the right setting for the task. Jo Clark from Kärcher recommends starting with a soft setting and working up. “Use soft pressure settings for timber surfaces such as decking and fences, medium pressure settings for vehicles, and high pressure settings for hard surfaces such as concrete and masonry areas,” she says. Switch out nozzles to vary pressure and coverage for different tasks.

To fast-track the weathering of a new timber deck, consider a prepping solution followed by a deck cleaner

If you have a composite timber deck, you probably won’t need to do much more than clear away any leaves or dirt that have accumulated on the deck or in the gaps between the boards, and wash with a soft-bristle broom and warm soapy water to remove unwanted stains and oils. Leaves and debris should be removed regularly.

DECK CARE

To wash your deck, Mark O’Connor from Monarch advises using a good quality cleaning product, applied with a scrubbing brush, to remove dirt, bird poo and general contaminants. “Follow up by hosing with a pressure cleaner and allow the deck to thoroughly dry out before applying any new coatings,” he says. “If painting or re-staining, use a brush to apply your first coat to cover not only the top of each piece of decking, but also the sides of each plank. Then use a lambswool decking applicator for the second and third coats.”

Perfect your path

After a sweep to remove dirt and debris, use a specialist cleaning product to remove mould and mildew, and hose off. If there are weeds growing in the paving, remove these carefully so you don’t disturb gap sand or mortar, and keep them at bay with regular spraying or by pouring boiling water over them. Take care if using a pressure cleaner to avoid dislodging sand or mortar. Tackle stains by scrubbing or washing with clean soapy water, or for more stubborn marks, try a specialist product like Kärcher stone cleaner. To avoid future staining, consider using a good sealer, which can help keep your paving in top condition for several years. While you’re cleaning, check for crumbling mortar and effect repairs if needed.

Posh up your patio

Most outdoor tiles are sealed for protection from the elements, so it’s important when cleaning not to damage or remove the coating. Sweep away all debris with a soft broom then wash with a soft mop and warm soapy water. For any stains or ingrained dirt, use an environmentally friendly cleaner.

Tackle the drive

After sweeping with a stiff outdoor broom or blower, wash the driveway with soap to remove dirt build-up, and use a specialist concrete cleaner like 30 Seconds Outdoor to tackle grease, rust or other stains without damaging the surface. Use a pressure cleaner on stubborn dirt. Top up joint sand or repair mortar if necessary, and cover cracks with an epoxy repair adhesive product like Sika’s Concrete Fix Kit. 1 To make the base, assemble the gabions by positioning the sides and bottom together and securing them by winding on the supplied spiral connectors, leaving the tops aside. 2 (See pic A) Place a gabion where the base of the potting bench will sit, then position two blocks in the centre. At the top, in the centre, twist wire around one side, run it to the other side and twist to secure and brace the sides to prevent bowing. Tip: Bend the wire around the top at least twice to hold it securely and cut with pliers. 3 (See pic B) Fill around the blocks with landscaping stones, positioning them to sit flush against the gabion sides, then attach the top with the supplied spiral connectors. 4 (See pic C) Stack the remaining gabion on top, and repeat by positioning two blocks in the centre, twisting wire over the top to brace the sides, fill with stones, then attach the top.

5 Twist wire around top and bottom gabion to hold them together at the front, back and sides, trimming excess with pliers. 6 (See pic D) To make the timber top, position three lengths of 1500mm-long hardwood together, wrong-side up. Position 440mm lengths crosswise over the ends, then secure countersinking screws into the hardwood top, with two screws into each length at both ends. Tip: Use an impact driver to drive in the screws, or use a regular drill to pre-drill the holes with a 3mm bit.

Enlist a second pair of hands to help lift the hardwood top. n •Timbers vary by state and territory; contact your local store for further information. n

7 Attach galvanised fixing clips onto the edge of the top gabion, at the front, sides and back, leaving them facing outwards for attaching to the top. Tip: It’s easier to position the clips before installing the heavy top. 8 Lift the top into position, right-way up and centred. Smooth over the top and along the edges and corners with 120-grit abrasive paper to remove any splinters, then smooth again with 180-grit. Apply two coats of clear exterior varnish, leaving to dry after each. 9 Secure 20mm galvanised stitching screws through the holes of the clips to secure the hardwood top to the gabion, to prevent it moving or tipping. ◆ bunnings.com.au |

Safety equipment (mask, disposable gloves) Drop sheet Timber offcut Wooden craft sticks Craft knife Fine craft paintbrush Broken ceramic item (plate, mug or vase) Two-part epoxy adhesive Oil-based enamel paint in gold

1 Piece together the broken item. Tip: The epoxy adhesive dries very quickly. Protect your skin by wearing disposable gloves and cover the work area with a drop sheet or cardboard. 2 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to activate the adhesive on a timber offcut, mixing with a craft stick. With the largest unbroken piece as the base, take the largest adjacent piece, apply adhesive along the joining edge, position it against the base and hold it until the adhesive dries.

3 Working from the largest adjacent pieces to the smallest, apply adhesive along the broken edges that join with the repaired base section, holding in position until the adhesive dries. 4 Scrape away excess adhesive using a sharp craft knife, holding it at 45° to run over the surface. 5 Stir gold oil-based enamel paint with a clean craft stick. Using a fine paintbrush, paint over the joins and leave to dry completely. ◆

Flower bomb Pot up your favourite perfume with these scented beauties, which thrive in planters

Gardenia

This shrub’s glossy green leaves form a perfect backdrop for the intoxicatingly scented, brilliant white or creamy yellow blooms. Plant in potting mix suitable for acid-loving plants, position in full sun and, when flowering, feed regularly with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser.

Lavender

Both the fine, silver-green foliage and mauve-purple flower spikes of this perennial shrub are highly aromatic. There are a few different species and varieties, each with differing growth habits. Generally, lavender needs at least six hours of sun a day and twice weekly watering in summer and winter.

Gardenia

(Gardenia augusta)

Deadhead spent blooms and prune after flowering to encourage bushy growth.

Lavender

(Lavandula spp.)

Plant lavender where you can brush against the foliage to release its scented oils.
