kitchen or bathroom (check out our trends story on page 39). While we’re talking trends, one of the prettiest we’ve seen is kintsugi. This Japanese art can not only make items look more beautiful after they’ve been repaired, it can also tick the sustainability box by keeping broken crockery out of landfill. See how to do it on page 51.

Make compost 1 Turn grass clippings, kitchen scraps and other organic waste into ‘black gold’. Look 3 for a compost bin with easy accessibility and adequate ventilation to keep the good bacteria oxygenated. Spring is the ideal time to fix patches in the lawn. Remove grass and soil around the affected area, add Daltons Premium Lawn Patching Gold, and water in. Test your soil before planting a new garden. Highly acidic or alkaline soil inhibits nutrient uptake for certain plants. Use a soil pH testing kit to ensure optimal conditions.
If a soil test reveals a pH over 7.0, it indicates alkaline soil. To neutralise a high pH, add compost, manure, leaf mould or mulch. To neutralise an acidic soil (a pH below 7.0), add garden lime.

Give fruit trees a boost every 2-4 weeks with Seasol. This liquid seaweed solution promotes vigorous flowering and fruiting, and overall garden health. Help your potatoes get the best start with a specially formulated fertiliser before planting. A potato fertiliser can help to boost tuber growth and correct any soil deficiencies. Continue feeding every 3-4 weeks.
THE SIMPLE LIFE Between lockdowns and working from home, we’re spending a lot more time indoors. This has boosted the already blooming trend of “cottagecore”: cosy homes with a self-sufficient, country feel – even if they’re in the middle of a city. Centred on nostalgic ideals of the simple life, cottagecore features lots of wood and wicker, handmade ceramics and vintage-inspired fabrics with checks and florals. Outside, think winding paths and picket fences – or flowerboxes on the deck for the backyard-impaired. It’s easy to try the trend. See what you have hidden in cupboards, pull out a favourite vintage GET THE LOOK piece (or buy DISPLAY YOUR one), then build NOSTALGIC from there. If it KNICK-KNACKS gives you cosy, THEN ADD SOME nostalgic vibes, PRETTY TOUCHES you’re on the right track!

SHARPEN GARDEN TOOLS
PLANT CROPS
Sharp edges make clean cuts, which can help reduce pest and disease problems.
Prepare for your summer harvest and plant veges like tomatoes, cucumber and capsicum.
If using garden products like fertiliser or pesticides around fruit and vegies, follow instructions, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating.

Lavender is easy to grow and suffuses everything that brushes past with a calming scent
I
n everyday life, fragrance plays constantly in the background, sometimes not consciously detected, but with the ability to affect our emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A combination of aromatic plants can bring a sense of peace and relaxation to the garden visitor. If you covet a garden that smells as good as it looks, incorporate as many scented plants as possible.

Year-round fragrance
It’s possible to find plants that scent the garden year-round. Annuals, perennials, bulbs, shrubs and trees all include a number of varieties that have a sweet fragrance. Some flower for several weeks at a time, while others show up for a fleeting visit. It’s worth remembering that some fragrance can come from foliage as well. Choose a diverse range to ensure there is something of interest in every season. Keep track of what you plant and when it flowers, too, so if there is a gap in fragrance, you can find more plants to provide scent at those times.
Planting scented f lowers in containers means you can move them to where you spend the most time throughout the year
A gardenia hedge by a seating area relaxes all the senses
Placement is just as important. Anywhere you walk or sit has the potential to host a scented plant. Trina Woolmore of KiwiFlora (kiwiflora. com) suggests, “When planning your fragrant garden, highlight the best places for your most coveted fragrances – beside entranceways, surrounding outdoor entertaining areas, dotted through garden beds beside pathways, even under the clothesline!” This allows the perfume to collect and intensify in areas you frequent the most. “Gardenia ‘Crown Jewel’ flowers twice yearly and is the perfect choice for mass planting around outdoor entertaining areas,” says Trina. “Dianthus ‘Scent from Heaven’ varieties make excellent container specimens for entranceways or beside 24 bunnings.co.nz |

seating areas. Lavender ‘Thumbelina Leigh’ is the earliest flowering English lavender and a fantastic addition to mixed plantings or massed under the clothesline to impart its soothing fragrance on your favourite linens.” Plant according to fragrance strength, as well. “When using plants with a strong heady perfume, it’s best to plant in multiples and give them their own space, so they are not competing with other strong fragrances,” says Trina. “Conversely, plants with a lighter, fresher fragrance,

such as herbs, tend to play nicely with each other and can be happily intermingled throughout the garden.”
Scented foliage
Several plants have surprisingly scented foliage. “One of the pleasures of designing with fragrant plants is that many species – especially those with scented foliage, rather than heady flowers – need us to interact with them to unleash their perfumes,” says garden designer Fiona Henderson (@fhenderperson).

NEW SEASON LOOK Spring into the warm months and paint your garden with potted colour. It’s easy with Northcote Pottery and Cyclone hand tools
W
hatever your garden situation – modest balcony to palatial grounds – potted plants are a fantastic way to make a statement. Spring is a great time to add more fabulous foliage to your home, invigorating your patio for a fresh new-season look! Punctuating your garden with potted foliage is so simple with a little help from Northcote Pottery and Cyclone hand tools.
STEP 1: PICK YOUR POT What’s your garden style? Whether you’re after a touch of rustic charm, like the ‘Whiskey Barrel’ planter, or a clean coastal feel with a sand-toned ‘Maxim’ drum, Northcote Pottery has a look to love. You also need to think about what you’ll plant in it, as this will naturally Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
influence your decision; Northcote Pottery’s Precinct Lite range comes in a range of sizes, including generously deep and wide pots that can hold bigger plants or a selection of varieties, if you want to try a collage of ‘thrill, spill and fill’ foliage. Will you need to move the pot from season to season, or for cleaning? The ‘Villa’ plastic trough offers modern good looks with the flexibility of a lightweight material, so you can lift and move it easily.
STEP 2: START WITH SOIL Decide what you’ll be planting and pick an appropriate high-quality potting mix. The Cyclone potting scoop (4), with its large stainless steel cup, makes the task of filling planters with soil quicker and cleaner.

STEP 3: POT UP Good tools not only make this part of the job cleaner and easier, they also give you more control, so you can avoid damaging new plants. The Cyclone hand trowel (1) is a must-have gardener’s friend, used for potting up and dividing smaller plants, while the Cyclone bulb trowel (2) is its trusty sidekick, ideal for not only planting bulbs, but also for transplanting small, delicate plants or seedlings.
STEP 4: KEEP IT TIDY You’ve planted up your pots and they’re looking amazing! Now keep them
lovely with a Cyclone hand fork (3). Use the leather strap to hang this beauty within easy reach, because it’s about to become your new favourite tool, used for lightly cultivating between shallow-rooted plants, and for regularly attacking weeds. Whip it out for weeding your beautifully planted pots, or use it to make short work of pesky weeds sullying your perfect lawn.

Upgrading a room needn’t mean changing everything; the existing beige carpet makes a neutral base for new additions

reating a comfortable, inviting living room – where you can kick back and relax with family, watch TV and entertain friends – doesn’t have to be costly and complicated. Here’s how to style a space from scratch for a fresh new look you’ll love.
Before
The room had good bones: a tall ceiling and great natural light, however it lacked personality and warmth
1 Paint a feature wall
An accent wall is a simple and effective way to transform a room. Dulux Kōwhai Park gives the rear wall a sunny glow, creating a natural focal point and helping to make a feature of the tall, narrow window. bunnings |

All plants sold separately.
2 Include display storage
A large bookshelf or display shelving brings interest to an empty corner. Here, two Clever Cube storage units have been placed side by side, adding height and a sense of depth. The timber finish adds warmth.
Try using rug gripper tape to hold your rugs in place
3 Lay down a rug – or two
Rugs contribute colour and texture and can help to define a seating zone in the heart of the room – handy if you’re carving out a cosy spot within an open-plan space. We’ve used two side by side to fill out the area.
4 Place your furniture
The golden rule in a living room – especially if you entertain a lot – is not to have all your seating aimed at the TV. Position it to make the most of a garden view, if possible, and group it for ease of conversation.
5 Just add greenery
EXPERT TIP
Spread plants around, away from the centre of the room, to draw the eye in different directions. Use a large plant – or a variety with an interesting leaf shape – to give life to an empty spot.

here are some homes that just make you go ‘wow!’ when you walk through the door. They may not necessarily be the biggest or most expensively styled, but they exude a sense of charm and individuality. Much of this appeal
comes down to character – that elusive element that turns a house into a home. For a new build or large renovation, details such as architraves, cornices, skirting, doors and windows are key. Choosing the right trims throughout your home also helps to provide cohesion in style and design.
House in the Hamptons
It’s easy to see why the Hamptons style has caught on, as the fresh palette works so well in Kiwi homes. Wellington interior designer Sarah Brown suggests focusing on the light side. “Think white walls, skirtings and cabinetry,” she says. bunnings |

Curved elements bring a natural feel and help to soften the effect of hard angles in furniture
Cornices can help to brighten up a room by diverting light from shadowy corners
Heritage building
Jillian Dinkel (jilliandinkel.com) is a specialist in adapting period homes and putting authenticity back into a home that has had the detailing stripped out. “My first tip would be to refer to original details that still exist,” she says. “Look at any cornicing, doors and windows that are original, and use them as a clue to choose other elements.” Jillian suggests bringing a piece of architrave, or photos of existing doors, in store to help source the right matches.
Contemporary cool
The trick to a contemporary aesthetic is to add interest without fussiness, says Jillian. Think large windows, simple textures and neutral tones. Contemporary homes work well with 36 bunnings.co.nz |

a shadowline ceiling, which is a small recess between the wall and ceiling bordered by a metal strip that’s plastered over to a smooth finish. A shadowline cornice (where this process is ready-made) is a more budget-conscious option. These cornices can also incorporate fulllength curtains for a seamless look. Cornicing and skirting options can introduce more warmth and personality to a room, often adding that final flourish needed to give a space its completed look.

If it’s a statement you want to make, consider the renewed trend for plaster curves. While curved archways and doorframes make more of a subdued design impact than straight lines, they still create a visual wow-factor. Christchurch interior designer Alex Fulton (alexfultondesign.com) explains, “Curves and arches bring out a softer side to architecture. From doorways to joinery, the ancient arch is really having a revival.” Alex believes a well-designed curve is great for moving your eye around a space in an organic way. “This is not only soothing, but it feels really fresh and contemporary,” she says. ◆

Wainscoting (decorative panelling positioned on the lower third of the walls) works beautifully in hallways and formal living areas to create an elegant look – as does Shaker-style cabinetry, especially in kitchens. Panelled interior doors can add character without fussy detailing, while tongue-and-groove timber panelled walls add interest.

Cover up Simply putting curtains through the wash can make a big difference. But if you need a change, try adding a set of sheers for an element of luxury. Layer under your block-outs or use them to soften the look of a roller blind. Disappearing act Investing in a full-height wardrobe will help a transformation – with closed doors to hide any untidy or unsightly items, there’s more room to focus on the pretty things. A cool head A bedhead makes a wonderful focal point. Get creative with paint or wallpaper to create your own straight on to the wall. If you have low ceilings, avoid making your design too high. Throwing shade Bedside lamps can have a huge design impact. New shades are an instant update. For colour, be inspired by art in the room, or by your favourite linen. ◆

Protect your skin by wearing disposable gloves and cover the work area with a drop sheet or cardboard. 2 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to activate the adhesive on a timber offcut, mixing with a craft stick. With the largest unbroken piece as the base, take the largest adjacent piece, apply adhesive along the joining edge, position it against the base and hold it until the adhesive dries.

Green thinking
A new colour scheme creates cohesion between the kitchen and adjoining dining space. “People can be scared of using colour, but it is an incredibly effective way to enhance the mood and proportions of a space,” says Lucy, who chose soft green Dulux

Bold accents pepper the space. “Black really grounds the scheme and can give a farmhouse kitchen a modern edge, so we introduced it through feature pendants and wall lights, as well as a black sink,” says Lucy. “People think you have to match your sink and tapware finish, but mixing a black sink with a brushed brass tap adds a little quirk and character.”

The room’s dated tiles and dreary work surface were replaced with contemporary white mosaics for the splashback, and distinctive marble-look Kaboodle benchtops.

een cook Virginia loves baking. But her old kitchen? Not so much. “We’d never had a rangehood, I needed more storage and I was over the timber cabinet doors my husband, Andrew, had made when we bought the house 15 years ago,” she says. “I thought they just needed to go.” But Make It Happen host and renovation expert Lucy Glade-Wright of Hunting for George (huntingforgeorge.com) had other ideas. “Virginia loved the charm of a farmhouse look, so we wanted to bring in that character and give it a modern touch,” explains Lucy. “This tied in perfectly with updating the existing timber cabinet doors which, although dated, were in good condition.” The country scheme also forged a link with existing furniture in the adjacent dining area, including a timber table and hutch that Virginia had owned for many years. “The kitchen had a good layout and solid bones, so it was a matter of determining what needed to be replaced and what could be refreshed with paint,” explains Lucy.

As an avid baker, Virginia needed abundant storage for supplies and bakeware. Several extra cupboards were added to boost capacity, yet one of the biggest improvements was reorganising the existing pantry. Dry goods were decanted into stackable containers, tiered shelf inserts added layers, and lower shelves were replaced with pull-out baskets, which allow for easy access to bulkier items. Removing shelves alongside the oven, in favour of a floor-to-ceiling cabinet, has also allowed small appliances to be kept out of sight. A few new open shelves have been installed to display greenery and treasured pieces.
Final flourish
A couple of furniture updates completed the refresh. For Lucy, the key piece tying the makeover together was the newly painted timber hutch that carried the Dulux Tauherenikau hue through to the dining area. “Updating it with contemporary brass knobs to match the kitchen cabinetry was a lovely finishing touch,” she adds. The reorganised pantry makes the most of the available storage space
A good sand and a coating of Cabot’s ‘Cabothane Clear’ brought out the lovely woodgrain in the top of Virginia’s table
The dining table also benefited from some TLC. After it was sanded, the base was painted with Dulux Cardrona, while the beauty of the timber top was accentuated with a coat of clear varnish. Virginia admits she was blown away by the impact.
“Painting the pieces was so simple but so effective – I thought my dining table was new!” she says. Beyond thrilled with the fresh look and improved functionality, Virginia says she now spends even more time in the kitchen. “I wanted it to be a warm and inviting heart of the home, and that’s exactly what it is,” she says. “I just love it. When people visit for the first time after the transformation, the first thing they say is, ‘Wow’!”◆

very house gets its fair share of stains. The good news is most, both inside and out, can be remedied with the right method. From pen on walls to rust on your cooktop, we’ve rounded up some of the most common household cleaning dilemmas and how to tackle them.
LIVING AND BEDROOM AREAS Grimy soft furnishings Revitalise grubby carpets and soft furnishings using a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner, which can be hired through the Hire Shop. For an extra charge, it will include a special upholstery attachment. Scuff marks Rejuvenate timber floors and walls with an eraser pad block. Cut the block to the desired size and lightly dampen it before gently wiping the affected area.

Choose an easy-clean wall paint, such as Dulux Wash&Wear, in kids’ areas
Pet accidents “The only way to reliably remove urine stains and odour from soft furnishings is with an enzymatic cleaner,” says Jay. “First, blot with paper towel to remove excess moisture. Then soak thoroughly with an enzyme cleaner.”
Mud For mud trailed onto carpet, Rowena Jongejan of Family Clean cleaning services recommends leaving it to dry completely before gently vacuuming the affected area. “Follow by blotting the carpet with a microfibre cloth and a solution of warm water and dishwashing liquid, before removing residue with a dry cloth.”
Ink Don’t panic if your toddler has used your soft furnishings as a canvas. “To remove pen and ink marks, blotting with some paper towel and isopropyl alcohol should do the trick,” says Jay Rawcliffe of Pristine Professional Cleaning.
Use an upholstery tool on your vacuum cleaner to remove dust, crumbs and pet hair from soft furnishings 61
Stickers Tackle sticker residue on windows or metal surfaces with a solvent. An effective option is a citrus-based product like De-Solv-it multipurpose cleaner, which can be sprayed directly onto the sticky spot. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before wiping the surface with warm, soapy water. However, avoid using it on food containers. Mould Target mould with a solution of eight parts white vinegar to two parts of water, says Rowena Jongejan. “Spray the affected area and let it sit for an hour. Using a soft sponge, scrub the surface to remove residue and liquid.” For pervasive problems, wheel in the big guns with a specialised mould cleaner, which also helps prevent mould reforming.

Nail polish Reduce nail polish damage to carpet with a swift sprinkle of baking soda followed by a little carbonated water. “Leave for 15 minutes, then blot with a cloth to lift up the residue,” says Rowena. “Use a few drops of dish liquid in warm water and gently rub, rather than scrub, the mark with a cloth.” Insect marks For hard-to-reach insect marks, you’ll need a stepladder, a damp cloth and sugar soap. “Take your time to gently rub the spots clean, ensuring you only remove the mark and not the paint,” says Jay Rawcliffe. Chewing gum If gum is stuck to your fabric or carpet, Jay suggests a remover such as Oomph. “Follow the directions and test on an inconspicuous spot first,” he says. Drink spills Fast action is best. “Use paper towel and a gentle blotting motion to absorb the liquid, followed by a sprinkling of baking soda or talcum powder to soak up the stain,” suggests Rowena. “Then apply carbonated water to the stain, blot the area and soak up remaining liquid with a microfibre cloth.”

BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS Cloudy shower screen Soap scum on glass and tiles can often be scrubbed off, but for calcium deposits, you’ll need to use an acidic cleaner, such as vinegar or CLR, to help soften the build-up. “Follow by rinsing the glass and working a scraper blade in one direction to remove the deposits,” says Jay. For lasting results, finish with a glass treatment like EnduroShield to help repel water and soap, and squeegee the glass after a shower. Mouldy grout “Start with a heavy spray of vinegar and leave it for 30 minutes. Then give it a good scrub using a grout brush and a product like Glitz Power Paste,” suggests Jay. Benchtop blemishes Benchtops need to be treated with care, as some off-the-shelf cleaning products can affect the finish. For a gentle, effective clean,

Rowena suggests making your own paste using a mix of baking soda, dishwashing liquid and water, and gently applying it to the trouble spot with a non-abrasive sponge. Rust spots Gently rub rust patches from stainless steel cooktops and appliances using super-fine steel wool. “Just be sure to spot test to ensure it won’t scratch,” says Jay. ◆

HOW TO IMPROVE SOIL
SUCCESSFUL GARDENING STARTS WITH THE BASICS. BUT WHAT MAKES GOOD SOIL? WE DIG DEEP TO FIND OUT

Turn garden cuttings into mulch or compost with Tumbleweed ‘Mulchmaker’ 220L compost tumbler, $249, I/N: 0768612
G
ood soil is the main element you need for a thriving garden. But not all soils are ideal for healthy plants. Some are too sandy, while others have too much clay – and too much of either can impact plant health and growth rates. The good news is you can improve both your soil and what grows in it.
Dish the dirt
Above: Encourage earthworms with Scotts sheep pellets, $12.98, I/N: 0215691, or try Tumbleweed ‘Worm Buffet’ in ground worm farm, $39, I/N: 0201386
Good-quality soil “should drain freely, hold a good amount of moisture and nutrients, have a pH close to neutral (pH 7), and contain a mix of coarse and fine particles,” says Angie Thomas at Yates. “It should also be home to a healthy population of earthworms and beneficial micro-organisms, and most importantly, be rich in organic matter,” she adds. This mix allows for water, air and nutrients to better penetrate the soil profile and be readily available for plant uptake. A lot of New Zealand gardens are lacking in topsoil and are often depleted, says Daltons gardening expert Scott Bromwich. “It’s important to enrich your soil with good quality organic matter, such as compost.” Organic matter improves the structure of clay soils, too. “It opens it up, creates space and allows for the soil to be more workable,” he adds.
GO FOR GREEN
One way to introduce organic matter into your soil is with ‘green manure’, which is actually a crop that has been specifically grown in order to be dug back into the ground. You can use a variety of seeds, the most common being peas, beans, mustard, alfalfa, oats, or sorghum, but you can also buy a ready mix such as Mr Fothergill’s (see SHOP, right). As a form of organic matter, green manure breaks down and releases valuable nutrients. Simply remove any existing vegetation, loosen the soil and sow seeds. Water and care for the next six weeks, then cut the plants back and dig in. Left: Home composting not only provides free organic matter for your garden, but also helps reduce the methane-producing material going into landfill 66 bunnings.co.nz |

CHOOSING A FERTILISER
Look at the types of plants you’re feeding and how often you need to be feeding them. Always look for a fertiliser that has been formulated for your specific plant types. Flower and fruit fertilisers are higher in potassium, whereas fertilisers for leafy greens are high in nitrogen and lower in potassium. Fertilisers are available in a variety of formats. Liquid and soluble fertilisers are fast-acting but need to be applied regularly, whereas controlled-release fertilisers feed plants as they need and can last anywhere between six to 12 months. They will all provide plants with adequate nutritional support.
Photography Getty Images.
Break new ground
“Regularly incorporating organic matter into the soil is critical to improving and maintaining it,” says Angie. This means adding compost, aged manures and organic mulches. It’s important to note soil improvers are not fertilisers, however. “Fertilisers are formulated to provide a mix of the main nutrients plants require for growth – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium – and can be synthetic, organic or a mix of both,” she explains. Soil improvers such as compost, manures and organic mulches contain few nutrients, but are high in organic matter. For a healthy, happy, and productive garden, use a combination of soil improvers and fertilisers.
Make sure you feed your soil the nutrition it needs so it can return the favour to you
“Soil types vary around New Zealand. If you look after the soil you have, then the soil in turn will look after your plants”

Cultivate variety
Crop rotation is always a good idea, advises Scott. “Growing crops of veges in different spots each year helps to manage soil nutrient balance and disease control,” he says. “As one plant depletes the soil of certain nutrients, the next plant will replenish the soil as it grows.” If you’re unsure what to plant in spare spaces in garden beds, Angie suggests growing annuals or groundcovers. They help prevent weed growth and soil erosion and also reduce compaction. ◆
Keep in mind... After applying fertiliser around fruit and veges, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. n If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. n Store all garden chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. n

here’s nothing more satisfying than growing and picking your own vegetables, and spring is the best time to give it a go! Start your self-sustaining story with these easygrow favourites for your best chance at a bumper harvest to brag about. Can you dig it?
1 Tomato
This warm season favourite is happy in a bigger pot or plot. Most tomato varieties will need staking as they can grow between 1.5 and 2m tall, but you can find dwarf forms that don’t require additional support. Choose a spot in full sun with well-drained soil. Enrich the soil with plenty of compost, organic matter and a dusting of garden lime. Feed regularly with a high potassium fertiliser once buds appear.
2 Beans
For a fast-growing vege, go for beans. Depending on the variety, you can start harvesting after as little as eight weeks. They need full sun plus space and support poles or frames to grow up. If you don’t have a lot of room, look for dwarf or bush beans, which grow easily in pots or small spaces. Add organic matter to improve the soil prior to planting and liquid feed with a vege-specific fertiliser during the growing season. bunnings |
3 Spring onion
This is one of the most rewarding veges to grow, as all parts of the plant can be used for cooking. The whole plant – leaves and roots – can be harvested in eight weeks, but if preferred, you can leave the plant in the ground or pot and just snip the leaves as needed. Position in full sun, feed regularly with a fertiliser suitable for leafy veges, and keep an eye out for slugs and snails on young seedlings. bunningsnz | bunnings.co.nz 69
4 Pumpkin
This sprawling vine needs lots of space, so give it a dedicated spot. It likes to ramble across the ground, but will also grow over a sturdy trellis. If using a trellis, look for smaller varieties and provide added support for the fruit, like a sling. Choose a sunny spot and dig organic matter well into the soil before planting. To harvest, wait until the stalks become brittle and die off.
5 Chilli
Turn up the heat by planting a mix of these firecrackers. They grow into attractive, small to mediumsized bushes, with a few exceptions that can grow 1.5-2m tall. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Feed regularly and pick often to promote a prolific crop. Most grow as annuals (only lasting one season), but they can live on for a few years in warm climates.
6 Cucumber
There is more to cucumbers than the traditional store-bought ones. They’re fast growers and are suitable for both pots and garden beds. Plant in full sun, in well-drained soil improved with plenty of organic matter. Give them a trellis to climb, otherwise they will ramble over the ground. Pick regularly – the more you pick, the more they produce!
7 Leafy greens
These include lettuce, bok choy, tatsoi, spinach and mustard leaves. They’re all quick growers and the leaves can all be picked when young. Only pick a handful at a time, leaving most of the plant intact, and this will encourage more leaves to grow. Pick a spot in full sun to part shade and enrich the soil with compost. Sow every 3-4 weeks to prolong the harvest.

Raised garden bed
3 8 Beetroot
This root vege is a staple in salads, roasts, burgers and sandwiches, so it’s worth growing. If starting from seed, soak the hard seed in water the night before planting. Grow in full sun with well-drained soil. Dig in aged manures or compost and fork well to help break up the soil. It can take 8-10 weeks to harvest the root, but you can enjoy the leaves sooner. Don’t pick all the leaves, though, in order to allow the plant to continue to grow. 70 bunnings.co.nz |
9 Parsnip
This underrated vege has a sweet, nutty flavour and can be used in place of potatoes or carrots. Choose a sunny spot with welldrained soil and enrich with aged manure and compost. Dig the soil over well to help break it up so it’s loose and crumbly. Sow fresh seed, as germination can be poor if the seed is old. If growing in pots, ensure a depth of 20-30cm for the roots to develop. And be patient – it can take 18 weeks before they’re ready.

BARBECUE CLEAN-UP
S
pring has sprung, and how better to celebrate than with a barbecue? But before you dust off your chef’s apron, is your barbecue all in good working order? And when was the last time you gave it a good scrub?
Deep clean
Apart from hygiene reasons, cleaning your barbecue also reduces the chance of it catching fire and ensures your food doesn’t taste of whatever you cooked three months ago. “Maintaining your barbecue by regularly cleaning the grill and hot plates is essential,” says Diana Dulevski of BBQ Buddy. “This will prevent the build-up of grease and residue, reduce the risk of flare-ups, prevent food from sticking to the surface and prolong the barbecue’s life.”

Details, details
Hotplates “Cleaning the plates when they’re hot will make your job so much easier,” says David Butt, Bunnings barbecue buyer. “Turn the barbecue up high and scrape the plates with a metal spatula or a scraper to remove remnants of past cook-ups. When it has cooled, use paper towels or a ball of newspaper to wipe up the mess.” For a deep clean, Diana Dulevski suggests using a grill block. “This is made from 100 per cent recycled glass and is environmentally friendly and non-toxic,” she says. “The block moulds itself to the barbecue grill, removing built-up grime left between the grill bars. Keep one side for your grates and the other for your hot plate.” Rust “Rusty hotplates are also best cleaned when hot, using your metal scraper, cooking oil, paper towels and a grill stone block,” says David. “Heat the plate, then rub the surface with regular cooking oil and the grill stone. Turn off and wipe up with paper towel or newspaper when cool. Repeat until all rust is gone.” Baking soda sprinkled onto the hot surface and wiped up when it stops fizzing can also help. Grills and grates These are also best cleaned after heating the barbecue. Then turn it off and scrub with a grill rake or brush. You can also leave grates overnight in hot soapy water,

then scrub with a sponge, rinse and dry, and replace. But note – cast iron grills shouldn’t be soaked, as this can promote rust. Instead, make up a thick paste of baking soda, salt and water, apply with a sponge and leave for about 20 minutes. Scrub off with a brush and then wipe or spray lightly with cooking oil to discourage rust. Barbecue burners “Ensure the gas is turned off and disconnect the tank before cleaning,” says David. Remove all the grills, grates, trays and burners and clean any food or dirt from the burner tube with a brush. Use a pin, toothpick or cleaning rod to ensure the holes in the burners are free of debris. Replaceable parts Check for damaged or corroded parts and replace those you can. Particularly look at the flame tamers, which are often damaged by use or salty air. It’s crucial to replace damaged flame tamers to minimise the risk of fire.
To keep your barbecue in good condition, give it a bit of TLC after each use. “Every time you use your barbecue, burn off all the remaining grease afterwards and clean the surface. For hot plates, use a scraper, scrubber and/or barbecue wipes,” says Diana. For grill grates, use a grill rake or grill brush to get into gaps and hard-to-reach corners. “Replace the fat absorber in the drip tray regularly to avoid it becoming a fire hazard,” adds Diana. ◆ 74 bunnings.co.nz |

Maintenance
Keep in mind...
There will come a time when your barbecue simply won’t respond to any amount of TLC. So, how will you know when you need a new one? “When your barbecue will no longer light, the hoses or fuel lines are cracked, or if it is leaking gas or the regulator is broken, then it’s definitely time to replace it,” says Diana. “Anything to do with gas can become a safety issue if not addressed urgently.” Other telltale signs include the following. n The flame distribution becomes uneven. n Your barbecue doesn’t maintain temperature. n Replacing parts becomes more expensive than buying a new barbecue. n There’s damage to parts you can’t replace; for example, the hood, doors, side shelves, the main firebox, glass window inserts and drip trays (in gas barbecues). n Your barbecue is too big or too small for your needs.

For any deep-cleaning project, you’ll need to first clear away leaves, dirt and other debris with a sturdy broom, brush, blower or rake. For particularly dirty work, remember to wear protective gear such as a mask and gloves.
Your timber deck will benefit from regular sweeping and washing
A water blaster will help to get your outdoor spaces sparkling without wasting water, and you can spot clean any marks with a trigger nozzle. The blaster will tackle stains, mould and algae with ease, provided you use the right setting for the task. Jo Clark from Kärcher suggests starting with a soft setting, then working your way up. “Use soft pressure for your timber surfaces such as decking and fences, medium pressure for vehicles, and high pressure settings for hard surfaces such as concrete and masonry areas,” she suggests. Switch out nozzles to vary the pressure and coverage for your different tasks.

Deck detailing
If you have a composite timber deck, you probably won’t need to do much more than clear away any dirt and debris that’s accumulated between the boards and remove unwanted stains and oils by washing the whole thing down with warm soapy water and a soft-bristle broom. Then it’s just a matter of resolving to regularly clear leaves and dirt from the cracks – and doing it! A sand like Cemix ‘Pavetight’ can help with repairing and replacing joints between pavers
Perfect your path
Sweep your paths to remove dirt and debris, then use a specialist cleaning product to get rid of mould and mildew, before hosing them off. If there are weeds growing in the cracks, remove them carefully so you don’t disturb sand or mortar. Keep them at bay by regular spraying with weed killer or pouring boiling water over them. Take care if using a pressure cleaner so you don’t dislodge sand or mortar. Try scrubbing stains with soapy water first. If that doesn’t work, try a specialist cleaner such as Kärcher Stone Cleaner. To avoid future staining, consider using a good quality sealer, which can help keep your paving in top condition for several years. While you’re cleaning, check for crumbling mortar. It can be a hazard, so make sure you repair it if needed.

Slip hazards
Algae, moss, mould and mildew can grow on pavers and driveways during the winter and other wet spells, making them slippery and dangerous. A good non-toxic, bleach-based outdoor cleaner will make quick work of eliminating all that unsightly muck.

Mark O’Connor from Monarch advises removing dirt, bird poop and general contaminants from decks by using a good quality cleaning product applied with a scrubbing brush. “Follow up by hosing with a pressure cleaner and allow the deck to thoroughly dry out before applying any new coatings,” he says. “If painting or re-staining, use a brush to apply your first coat to cover not only the top of each piece of decking, but also the sides of each plank. Then use a lambswool decking applicator for the second and third coats.”

8 Posh up your patio
Most outdoor tiles are sealed for protection from the elements, so it’s important not to damage or remove the coating when cleaning. Sweep away all debris with a soft broom, then wash with a soft mop and warm soapy water. For any stains or ingrained dirt, use an environmentally friendly cleaner. Stiff bristles help to thoroughly clean timber decks. Cabot’s ‘Deck Prep’ scrub brush/squeegee, $29.40, I/N: 1560544, and ‘Deck Hand’ 15L bucket, $27.98, I/N: 1661947

Sweep your drive with a stiff outdoor broom or blower, then wash it down with soap to remove dirt and grime build-up. Next, apply a specialist concrete cleaner to tackle grease, rust and other stains without damaging the surface. Use a water blaster on stubborn spots. Top up the joint sand or repair mortar if necessary, and fill any cracks with an epoxy adhesive repair product. Finally, consider applying an acrylic sealer to concrete for longer lasting protection. Then take a seat, put your feet up and admire your handiwork! ◆

Weather damage can make timber decks dangerous. Use a pry bar to lever up damaged boards, or a cordless drill if they’re screwed down. Cut new boards to fit the gaps and use a chisel to lever them into position. Secure with suitable fixings.
