A word from our editor
We’re all about the cosy in this issue, but we’re looking beyond just heaters to help our home feel toasty. Check out ‘Winter Escape’ from page 11, where we show you how to get hygge-style cosiness with natural materials and tactile textures – and plenty of DIY! Plus we share how to use rich colour for a look that oozes warmth; see page 25 for our pick of the hottest hues. Of course, we have actual heating too, as well as some brilliant room makeovers that we hope will inspire you to get on the tools. Enjoy the issue!

Good lighting and a clutter-free desk are crucial for a home working environment
IN THE ZONE With home-based businesses booming, here are four tips for mixing your work life into your living space 1 Council approvals Generally, you can run a home business without local council approval provided your operations won’t affect your neighbours. Rules vary between councils and, if your business includes food-related products, you may need additional permits and approvals. Check with your local council about business restrictions in your area. 2 Space makers If you have the room, a dedicated zone that you can close off is ideal, allowing you to shut the door on work at the end of the day. Depending on your needs, this could be anything from a desk area in a spare room to a dedicated study, converted garage or purpose-built studio.
4 Safe and secure Depending on the nature and size of your business, you may have to invest in extra security measures. Screen windows so your gear is out of easy sight of thieves, choose strong door and window locks and consider burglar deterrents such as motion-activated cameras and lighting. An alarm linked to a monitoring service, particularly if your job requires you to be out and about a lot, is worthwhile. Secure tools in lockable cabinets and essentials in a sturdy safe. It’s also good practice to speak with an insurance broker, as most home policies don’t cover business equipment and activities.
3 Store and order If you spend any amount of time at your desk, you’ll need a chair you can position at the right height, good task lighting and storage for all your bits and bobs. 2

News This season in the garden
Take it outside
Cold winter months provide ideal conditions for growing many veges. Here are our top tips on prepping and planting throughout winter. Pull out all dead plant matter and prep the soil with compost and chicken and sheep pellets. Plant winter seedlings including kale, bok choy, cabbages, garlic, spinach and shallots.
Tick off this to-do list for tip-top outdoor areas. For more on what to do in the garden during winter, go to bunnings.co.nz/ garden-diaries
Fiesta Flower Bulbs ‘Printanor’ garlic bulbs, $7.87/ pack of 4, I/N: 0530546 The shortest day of the year (June 21) marks the ideal time for planting garlic. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil and plant individual garlic cloves 5cm deep and 10-15cm apart.
WINTER VEGES Add a layer of pea straw to help contain weeds and to keep roots warm. In particularly cold areas, protect young plants with a frost cloth. Caterpillars, slugs and snails are rife in winter. Pick them off and, when you see leaf damage or droppings, use baits or other suitable pest control products. Always read the label before use.
McGregor’s multi tool sharpener, $22.98, I/N: 0160285 Clean, sharpen and oil your garden tools before storing in a shed or garage. McGregor’s multi tool sharpener has a built-in oil pad.

Morrison ‘Storm 500’ 140cc 18" 4 stroke mower, $398, I/N: 0217074 Raise the height of your lawn mower when mowing in winter to avoid damage to lawns. A lower cut leaves the grass more susceptible to cold and frost.

Scotts sheep pellets, $12.98/5kg, I/N: 0215691 Winter is the best time to plant roses. Choose a sunny spot that’s sheltered from wind and add a handful of sheep pellets to the bottom of the hole when planting.
Trojan ‘Ergo’ 26T wide plastic garden rake, $24.98, I/N: 3360930 Rake up leaves and other debris. Diseases and insect eggs can overwinter among the debris and infect plants in spring. Bin or burn any diseased material.
eclutter! Donate, D discard or recycle any used and unwanted items that are taking up valuable wardrobe space. Pack away your swimwear – don’t dump them on a shelf, keep these small clothing items together in a cube insert. Fold your warmer clothes and display them flat on shelves at eye level. Be on the lookout for cupboard moths. Set a non-toxic trap to cover your bases. Display your scarves and belts on a hanger for ease of access.

News Get comfort with the flick of a switch, using a single appliance that lights, heats and clears moisture from the air – potentially inhibiting mould growth
Clear pendant lights make a subtle statement while diffusing light evenly throughout the room. Sharing a few of our favourites...
LAMP OF LUXURY Why it’s awesome
Any drawbacks?
A combination heat lamp/extractor fan/light is an excellent all-in-one bathroom solution. Monique Cheung at IXL explains, “Alongside the superior illumination of an energy-saving LED light, infra-red heat lamps provide instant warmth while a powerful extraction fan removes steam for a clean and clear environment.” A standard addition to a bathroom, an extractor fan is equally important in a laundry, especially if you’re using a dryer or hanging wet clothes. While a window helps vent moist air, you’re likely to avoid opening it when it’s cold outside. An extractor fan keeps the air dry without letting in the chill, while a heat lamp makes the room more comfortable and gets clothes dry and off the racks faster.
This handy bathroom device is not one you can install yourself. It must always be hardwired by a licensed electrician. Note: New Zealand ventilation standards require extractor fans (including in kitchens) to be ducted outside. Brilliant ‘DIY’ orb glass pendant light in Satin Brass, $74.90, I/N: 0137652
First, choose the style and budget for your heater, keeping in mind whether you want a portable heating source or something more permanent. Consider your fuel source – electric, LPG or natural gas. Whether you choose a built-in electrical or a gas-fitted heater, both need to be installed by a licensed tradesperson. It’s important to think about the size of the space you want to make comfortable on chilly nights. Each heater will have various heat outputs. Measure the length and width of your area to calculate the square metres and consider spaces where people gather. Warmer regions may not need as many areas heated compared with other colder areas. Remember, a portable heater must be placed Turn to page 31 on a flat, solid for more helpful advice on surface and heating your away from any home throughout combustible winter items including fabrics, plants, timber and LPG tanks. ◆

Toasting sticks
Thermos ‘Designer’ 1800ml flask, $24.90, I/N: 0510125
See right for how to make these toasting sticks
What you need Safety equipment (gloves, eye and ear protection) Handsaw Tape measure and pencil Drill with 4mm bit Side cutters Foraged sticks Steel skewers (we used Jumbuck metal skewers) Epoxy (we used Parfix epoxy adhesive 5 minute everyday) Bamboo skewer Cord (we used Zenith jute shop twine)
Method Forage for sticks between 15mm and 25mm thick, and at least 250mm long. Trim ends cleanly using a handsaw. Drill a centred, 40mm-deep hole into the end of each stick with a 4mm bit and, 20mm in from the opposite end of the sticks, drill a hole sideways (for the cord). Cut the loop off the steel skewers using side cutters. Mix up the epoxy according to the manufacturer’s instructions and dab it into the end holes of the sticks with a bamboo skewer. Slot the cut ends of the skewers into the sticks, positioning them upright while the epoxy cures. Thread cord through the sideways holes and knot to form a loop. Tip: To work the twine through the hole, thread a piece of thin wire through and make a loop. Pass a length of twine through the loop and pull the wire, along with the twine, back through the hole.

Security detail With modern security camera technology, you can ensure the safety of your home and family from wherever you are
A
lot has changed about the way we live, but the instinct to protect the people and things we care about has stayed the same. Modern technology has made it so much easier to keep your home, family and business safe.
UNPLUGGED Taking your home’s security into your own hands has never been easier. New technology means installing security cameras could be a weekend job for a DIYer. Not only do these modern cameras connect wirelessly to your wi-fi router, but they can also be installed without an electrician – look for Swann’s ‘plug and play’ style systems that plug into a power socket, or completely wire-free models that run on a rechargeable battery.
ON WATCH Having a personal security detail might be beyond the
reach of most mere mortals, but your smart security system can offer virtually the same service. Swann’s True Detect senses heat and movement, distinguishing people, animals and cars from false triggers like tree branches or rain. The latest cameras even offer facial recognition for up to 10 people, alerting you when a friend or family member is at the door. With two-way talk, you can chat to the delivery person remotely, scare off intruders by sounding a siren or even use the spotlight camera to shine a light bright enough to scare off anyone who’s up to no good.
EAGLE EYE Suspect someone is lurking outside your home? 1080p full HD video means grainy footage is a thing of the past. Instead, you can expect to see faces, licence plates and crucial details,
like whether your visitor is carrying a parcel for delivery – or a crowbar for mischief! Infrared night vision is enhanced by the addition of a bright spotlight that gives you the full picture of what’s happening in and around your home, even after dark.

2 Swann 1080p indoor wi-fi security camera, I/N: 0138782
INTERNAL AFFAIRS It’s not just external security that you want covered. Indoor security cameras can be positioned around your home to help you keep an eye on the ones you love. An indoor security camera can be used to watch over your pets while you’re at work, or even be installed in an elderly relative’s home, so you can make sure they’re safe. Smart sound alerts will send through a notification when the camera detects a sudden noise, like the sound of a breaking window or someone falling over, while two-way talk lets you check in to make sure they’re okay.

he right outdoor lighting can work wonders in the garden. “It can reinforce an ambience, create drama and bring life and vigour to an otherwise lifeless space,” says Adam McDonald of Impressions Landscape – Design. Highlighting individual plants can turn them into focal points and throw light on other structures, such as pools and their surrounds
Safety tip All hardwired electrical work must be carried out by a licensed tradie
Ponder the ponds Lights around pools and water features help transform a body of water into a wonderland after hours – as well as increasing the safety of your midnight dip. In-ground lights are ideal to light the way, while pool lights effectively illuminate the water source. “The amount of lighting in the pool will depend on its size and shape – a small pool may only need one light, but a large and irregular-shape pool may need three or more,” explains Adam McDonald. Don’t forget to use lights to highlight any attached water features or structural elements and, for real wow factor, consider lighting up the landscape around it too – the visual impact is worth it. Always consult an electrician prior to pool installation, as they will be able to best advise what’s possible, especially for in-pool lighting.

Light the way Lights can help you safely navigate your way through the garden, but you needn’t be blinded with glare. “Lights such as path bollards, wall and step lighting and even downlights can be used to reinforce the usability of a garden,” says Adam. Position solar bollards or lanterns along a path to create a statement walkway, or consider using them to illuminate surrounding garden beds – sufficient to highlight where you’re walking, while making a feature of the adjacent plants. In-ground LED lights are smart-looking options, but for a similarly eye-catching feature, try strip lighting. “Strip lighting on the right project – under stair nosing, around garden bed edges or retaining walls – can be both functional and statement driven,” says Adam.

Uplighting onto trees creates a bewitching display of light and shadow
Duty calls Task lights need to be practical, but there’s no reason why they can’t be stylish, too. “Rather than solving a problem with a garish white light, a combination of layered light variation using one or more ornamental fittings can be used for a more
design-driven lighting approach,” says Adam. Look for fittings where the housing or finish is a feature in itself. To incorporate them into the existing landscape, partner with other light sources to create a complete lighting effect for the whole space. “Downlights, outdoor pendants
Take control Smart lighting puts you in control of your outdoor lights with a click of a button (or a scroll on your smartphone). “There is safety in knowing your home can be lit up with such ease,” says Dayna. “You can link systems to voice commands, to turn on when the sun sets or when you arrive home, or to create custom colour schemes.” Smart lighting is available for most outdoor light forms, from string lights to spotlights. They are often ‘plug and play’ (meaning easy to install yourself) and can be controlled via bluetooth or wi-fi.

In the spotlight Outdoor features and focal points deliver character, so it’s a shame to lose them in darkness. “Spotlights can be used to cast a strong beam of light directly onto an object, plant or tree, to help bring features and elements to life,” says Dayna WalkerMathews of Holman Industries. A single spike light is ideal for throwing upward light onto a tree – position it to capture the beauty of the trunk and the canopy. A series of spotlights also works well to highlight trees or plants along a perimeter or path. “The best designs combine small and large spotlights, each adjusted at slightly different angles, to add depth and create ambient lighting,” she says. Adam adds, “Use spotlights to highlight features, but also to cast alluring shadows to help create a relationship between the light source and darkness.” This increases the sense of drama, adds depth and helps to enhance colours and textures. }

Colour your world Lights can be used to add character or a sense of whimsy to your space. Wrap fairy lights around tree branches, use them as a veil over the pergola, or secure them along decking rails – ensure they’re waterproof and designed for outdoor use. Warm white string lights create a classic ambience,
while coloured lights add an element of fun to any outdoor area. If experimenting with colour, especially for parties, look for lights you can easily adjust. “RGB lighting systems are controlled via an app, so you can easily change up the lighting to suit your mood or create a more dynamic display,” says Dayna Walker-Mathews.
Safe and sound Though a beautiful lighting scheme can transform your garden into a work of art, practical security lighting is still important, offering a clear path and peace of mind. For a better sense of security, install motion-activated sensor lights around entrances and access points, like the front door, side gates and garage. Consider their height and placement, as tree branches and pets can easily set them off. You can also adjust the length of ‘on’ time, particularly if there is a distance between the front gate or carport and the front door. ◆

Start with colour When creating a cosy, comfortable space, colour is key. “Colour and emotions are closely linked, with colour playing a substantial role in influencing how we feel in a space,” explains Jane Wright, Bunnings trend and design manager. “The ‘cosy living’ trend accelerated during COVID as people yearned for reassurance and comfort. Earthy terracottas and ochres, and cosy shades of elderberry and clay evoke feelings that support our physical and

emotional wellbeing. The warmth of these shades plays into our need to feel cocooned,” she says. Warm reds and yellows are not the only choices; it’s all about undertones, richness of pigment and, of course, how the colour speaks to you on a personal level. Melanie Stevenson of Porter’s Paints, says, “Cosy up your space with colours you love, whether that is a restful blue, deep emerald green, a classic navy or a rich turmeric – as long as the colour is complex and moody, it will work well.”
Go-to cosy hues There are certain colours that say ‘cosy’ in anyone’s language. “Warm and earth-based colours can create a sense of security and comfort, which is why these colours are perfect for cooler seasons,” says Davina Harper, Dulux colour specialist. For a restful scheme, steer away from vivid and fiery tones, and instead opt for soft sunset shades of blush and coral, or earthy shades of tobacco, rust, ochre and mustard. Deeper tones tend to be more cocooning, but ultimately it’s about personal preference. “You can achieve a cosy feeling with pastel shades – for instance, PPG Paints Watchful Heart, a pinky pastel; Soft Look, a mellow pastel green; or Glad Grace, a soft mauve,” says PPG Paints chief coloursmith Rachel
Lacy. These lighter shades might be an easier choice for the colour-shy, and can be layered with deeper-toned accessories. You can also promote warmth with dark hues. Jane says, “My preference to create a cosy atmosphere is to use darker, moodier colours such as charcoals and deep olives. Visual depth is then added through a considered assortment of textures and surfaces. Assuming the room has plenty of natural light, these tones bring a sense of stillness into spaces.” “Adding natural textures to a room painted in cooler tones helps warm up the space” Jane Wright Bunnings
27
Plan it Keep out the cold If you prefer a cooler palette, you can still create a cosy space – it’s all about the paint colours you choose and how you match them. Melanie says, “If you love cooler tones like greys, blues and greens, look for ones that are complex with some warm element to the undertones.” For example, choose a grey with undertones of ochre over one with a straight black tint, which will be cold and soulless. “The human eye can see tens of thousands of colours and a complex colour is actually softer on the eye and easier to live with than a simple one,” she says. Complete the paint scheme with a warm neutral for trims and any other walls. Next, dress the room with cosy coloured and textured accessories. Davina suggests, “To balance these cooler hues, you can add texture with beautiful warm layers of textiles in rich browns, caramels and terracottas.” Finally, consider lighting, choosing warm white bulbs over cooler tones.

Flattering glow Beautiful lighting can instantly make or break a comforting mood. Colour is essential – swap out bright, blue-toned LEDs for warm white bulbs and add accent lights. “Think layered illumination; every room should have a mix of lighting, including overhead, accent and task lights,” says Jane. “The interplay between light and dark created by multiple light sources creates darker, quieter moments. If only one light source is used everything is flat and boring.” Plug-in wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps allow you to upgrade your lighting without calling in an electrician. Dimmers on lights will give you an additional level of control over the mood of the room. And if all else fails, nothing says cosy like candlelight.

the effect with sheer curtains. Leather sofas? Add throws and textured cushions to counter the hard texture.” “Diverse textures in a room bring much greater visual and tactile depth. It always takes a couple of different textures to achieve a beautifully balanced room,” says Jane Wright. “The key is to avoid finishes and materials with the same surface – for example, if you have a wooden floor and a leather sofa, add fluffy, woollen or quilted cushions and a throw to break up the smoothness.” Pick furniture with rounded forms over hard angles, and choose natural materials that invite touch – especially those in rich colours. “Incorporating wood into a room with cool colours is a great way to create cosiness as its rich tones visually warm a space. A timeless leather armchair has the same effect,” says Jane. ◆

Efficient home heating
Feeling the chill? We’ve got plenty of hot tips for keeping cosy at home this winter

s outside temperatures drop, thoughts turn to a cosy indoors, perhaps with a crackling fire. In our winter fantasies, we’d do it all with abandon but, in reality, that cosiness comes at a financial and environmental cost. You can tough it out in a thicker pair of socks, or you can upgrade your home heating and insulation and achieve winter comfort in an energy-efficient fashion. Here are some smart ways to stay toasty. Eco air A reverse-cycle heat pump – also known as an air conditioner – covers off all your heating and cooling needs in one unit. It can also be a highly efficient and cost-effective form of heating (check the Energy Rating Label on a unit before you buy). All reverse cycle heat pumps use refrigerants to concentrate heat from the environment, but the new, improved R32 refrigerant is the gold standard, with no impact on the ozone layer and less global warming potential of its predecessors*. Demand more While investing in a new heating option, look for one that offers more control. Carrier’s Sleep Mode gently lowers temperatures as we fall asleep and raises them for a snug awakening.
EXPERT TIP “The right heating for a home depends on how the home and each room is used, as well as room sizes, insulation, the building construction, region, and available energy sources” Chris Mischeski Sustainability Trust

Smart thinking When it’s cold outside, having wi-fi control allows you to pre-emptively strike during your commute, turning on the heating so you can return to a warm home. Some air conditioners, such as the Carrier ‘Fern’ range, can be fitted with a wi-fi kit, which allows you to operate it remotely via a tablet or smartphone. At home, you can use voice control (through a Google or Amazon smart home hub) to crank up the heat from the comfort of your bed.

Return to wood Solid fuel home heaters have come a long way, with the new generation of slow-combustion heaters boasting enhanced eco credentials. All new wood burners installed after August 2005 on properties under two hectares must have emissions of less than 1.5 grams per kilogram of dry wood burnt, and a thermal efficiency of at least 65 per cent. Of course, a wood heater can also be a style statement – look for one that suits your space. Kent ‘Ruapehu’ wood heater, $2,698, I/N: 0177882†
Kent ‘Murchison’ wood heater, $1,998, I/N: 0177880†
Tip Before buying a wood heater, check regulations with the Ministry for the Environment and your local council or unitary authority, as you may need a building consent
Wood-burning heaters, whether freestanding or built-in, are a good source of heat but need to comply with strict emission regulations
Deal with draughts According to Chris Mischeski, home performance adviser at Sustainability Trust (sustain trust.org.nz), air leakage can make up almost 10 per cent of heat lost in a home and quickly cool a room – but this is relatively simple and low cost to fix. “Draught seal windows, doors and ceiling hatches with adhesive weather strips and seal under doors with door brushes and/or door snakes,” suggests Chris. Caulk around larger gaps in skirting boards and where pipes enter a house. “Also, look out for draught sources such as pet flaps and broken extractor fan housings, and seek advice on how to fix them,” says Chris. bunnings.co.nz |

Add texture Warmth is physical but also emotional – dial it up with a few visual triggers. “Oversized rugs under your lounge, textured throw cushions and blankets all give off a warm emotional response in cold winter months,” says interior designer Chontelle Samios.

Curtain call A sunny expanse of windows can be the weak link in winter. A single pane of glass can lose almost 10 times as much heat as the same area of insulated wall, but if you are renovating, double-glazed windows can reduce heat loss by 30 per cent*. For a quick fix, think curtains, blinds or, even better, a layered combination.

Well padded “Insulation is a critical component of a warm, dry and healthy home,” says Chris. “Once installed, the energy savings begin to recover the cost immediately.” Using the right type is crucial for a well-performing end result – and the higher the R rating of a product, the more heat the home will hold. For ceilings with no insulation, Chris recommends insulation segments between joists with another layer cross-laid over the top; over existing ceiling insulation, use a polyester ceiling blanket to cover timber joists and reduce heat loss through timber. “Aim for at least R3.6 insulation in the ceiling,” says Chris. For underfloors, use at least R1.8 insulation between joists, and choose a material such as polyester that can withstand damp conditions. “But in high wind open environments where the underfloor is exposed, semi-rigid segment products work best as they reduce windwash through the insulation,” says Chris. Some bulk insulation products can be retrofitted and, with good access, this can be a relatively straightforward DIY job.

Fighting winter fustiness Cocooning in your beautifully heated and draught-proof home is a winter delight, but to prevent cosiness drifting into staleness, it’s wise to take some preventative measures. Musty and damp air is not only unpleasant but unhealthy, and it’s a natural consequence of a season of closed windows, particularly when you’ve had laundry drying inside and plenty of hot showers, and been busy making home-cooked meals. Ventilate your home as much as possible during winter by using extractors in steamy
Power pointers Though not the most efficient or economical choice for heating a whole home, electric heaters, including panel and fan models, are ideal for smaller, insulated spaces. Use them to take the edge off when working from home during a cold snap. New panel heaters – which can often be wallmounted – are becoming so sleek you’ll barely notice them. Be aware that they are not suitable for wet zones; a ceiling-mounted combined heat, light and extractor can be a good solution for a bathroom or laundry. ◆

(huntingforgeorge.com). “It was tired but a very useable outdoor space,” says Lucy. “It was flat, had a patio and grass area, but it lacked a bit of pizzazz. Jenny just didn’t know what to do with it.” But in a matter of three days the backyard was transformed, on a budget of just over $15,000. Key to the redesign was creating areas for dining, barbecuing and relaxing. “We designed a really simple layout in terms of the deck, grass, the barbecue space and pavers,” says Lucy. “It was what we added to it, such as the greenery, screens and water feature, that really amplified the garden.”

Step one was to lay a new deck, which has been made into a generous dining zone with a new dining setting and festoon lighting woven through the rafters. Empty spaces were rounded out with pots and hanging baskets, filled with succulents for easy-care greenery. Any less-thanfabulous features were dealt with – the tired weatherboards were repainted with PPG Frost Fangs, while screening was installed to mask the hot water system.
Elsewhere, worn grass was dug up, and the area levelled and returfed. Pavers and pebbles form a neat border around the deck, and create a pathway to the newly created outdoor cooking and seating area. This zone is now defined by a pebbled base, a barbecue and Jenny’s existing garden furniture, revived with specialist oil. A coat of dark grey paint on the fence has brought a flattering backdrop. “If you paint a fence in a charcoal colour, it can really help to lift all of your greenery and the other elements in your garden,” explains Lucy.

LIVING ROOM REVIVAL Removing a temporary divide and a complete repaint have given this lounge room new life
F
or 21-year-old university student Max, the saying ‘a mother’s love knows no bounds’ certainly rings true. To create a much-needed bedroom for him, his mother sacrificed the living room in their home by slicing it in half. “We put up sliding doors to separate the lounge room, and then I was living in the other half,” explains Max. Issues with the arrangement emerged almost immediately. “It basically took away the lounge room,” says Max. “It was very claustrophobic. No-one really wanted to use the room knowing I was right behind them. They couldn’t watch anything late at night because then I couldn’t sleep!” Despite these issues, the family lived with the layout until Max’s sister moved out and the Bunnings Make It Happen

team moved in. “Max wanted to create a living area his mum and family could really enjoy,” says MIH host Lucy Glade-Wright. “It ended up being a simple cosmetic fix.” Removing the makeshift doors that divided the living room and bedroom brought in much-needed natural light. Holes were patched, the walls and ceilings were painted, the old carpet was ripped up and new laminate floorboards were installed. “That’s one of the best parts of the renovation,” says Max. “The floor is much easier to keep clean – and it looks a lot nicer, too.” Fixtures and fittings were refreshed with a modern ceiling fan and wall light, while stylish sheer curtains add softness, texture and gently diffused light as the perfect finishing touch.

An inside job As a key focal point, the nonworking fireplace was given an instant update by painting its interior black and refreshing the white exterior. Mantels matter when decorating a fireplace surround; here, simple works best with a few stylish accessories and, of course, some greenery, all sitting below a pill-shaped mirror.

Let the games begin An enthusiastic gamer, Max had often coaxed his mum into playing too. “We had the idea to have a desk where they could still play games together, but it would be an inclusive space,” says Lucy. Defining the area was as simple as painting a feature wall (see page 72 for instructions), adding a desk and installing storage above – actually a Clever Cube floor unit secured to the wall with strong angle brackets.

FRONT GARDEN REFURB This facade refresh has seen a brick ugly duckling transformed into a beautiful home
F
or their next makeover, the Bunnings Make It Happen team moved on to a tired 1960s brick bungalow. Although she loved her neighbourhood, homeowner Lisa says she used to cringe when directing people to the “ugly house at the end of the street”. But when Lucy Glade-Wright
arrived on the scene, she saw its potential. Painting the mint-green brick in light grey, and the window frames, eaves and gutters in white, gave the house instant kerb appeal. “We switched out the door’s hardware to modernise it and it worked a treat,” says Lucy, who also weaved in a country look with two farm-style wall lights.

Hamptons meets country Lisa loves the Hamptons look but Lucy, conscious that they were in the country and not by the beach, decided to give the style a twist. “For our colour scheme, we opted for neutral greys and whites to create a Hamptons beach-house style, but we also brought in timbers and warm tones and textures to add some farmhouse charm,” she says. The unattractive concrete front porch was covered and widened to create extra outdoor space, using timber decking which was whitewashed using a deck stain. “We put planter boxes around the edge to give it structure,” explains Lucy. Seagrass baskets, potted trees and fragrant lavender were added for a warm and homey ambience. And with the existing hedge already fitting the theme, there was just one last thing that needed attention: the letterbox. “People can forget about how important a letterbox is to a house. First impressions count!” says Lucy. Installing a freestanding letterbox is an easy DIY job – see page 74 to learn how. ◆

amie had always loved DIY shows, but it wasn’t until she did a renovating course that she had the confidence to buy a doer-upper. After a long search, she found an affordable 1960s duplex. “I wanted something that only needed cosmetic upgrades rather than structural changes that would blow my $30,000 reno budget,” she explains. The bulk of the budget was spent transforming the kitchen, bathroom and laundry. “It was a lot of hard work,” says Jamie, “but also incredibly satisfying and something I’d love to do again.”
“The reno took three and a half months,” says Jamie. “Each afternoon after work I’d spend a couple of hours on site, and every weekend was spent painting and assembling flatpacks” bunnings |

48 Kaboodle ‘Modern’ profile cabinetry in Gloss White helps bounce light around
PPG Paints Admiral Blue
KITCHEN More in store The biggest issue in the compact kitchen was lack of storage. “It had just two overhead cabinets and no pantry, so the challenge was providing more storage space, without encroaching on the dining area opposite, which was also quite small,” explains Jamie. Using the online Kaboodle kitchen planner, Jamie played around with layout and cabinetry options, then had an in-home services team member visit to discuss options and measure up the new configuration. While the original U-shaped layout was kept, the new peninsular bench was pushed out to slightly enlarge the kitchen footprint. On the back wall, vertical space was maximised with a bank of overhead cupboards and a 600mm pantry cabinet. Once ready to go, Jamie had a carpenter install both the cabinetry and benchtop. “I love the modern yet timeless combination of navy, white and brass” Jamie homeowner

Bonnie blues As white-on-white kitchens run the risk of looking a little plain, Jamie added an element of wow to the face of the peninsular bench with contrasting texture and colour. Shiplap-look wall lining panels were cut to size, painted in PPG Paints Admiral Blue and attached to the base cabinets. “I wanted a really deep, rich navy and the first sample pot I tried was perfect,” says Jamie. “It’s a beautiful, classic colour, which is sophisticated and adds depth and personality.”

Bright spark Jamie opted for PPG Paints Crisp White on the walls and ceiling, and Kaboodle cabinetry in Gloss White personalised with brushed brass pulls for a touch of luxury. White splashback tiles add to the timeless palette, as does the Kaboodle laminate benchtop in Mayonella, which resembles natural stone. “I wanted something affordable and low maintenance, and the finishes are so easy to clean,” says Jamie.

B AT H RO O M Demolition derby While arches are making a comeback, they just didn’t work in the original bathroom. “The arch took up valuable space and made the room feel disjointed and dark, so the first step was demolishing it along with the bath, toilet and dated cabinetry,” says Jamie. Removing the bath in favour of a walk-in shower with a glass screen greatly enhanced the light and sense of space. Mirror, mirror Dual-functionality pieces set a small space up for success, as Jamie found with the Mondella mirrored shaving cabinet. “It provides considerable head-height storage without encroaching too much into the space and, being reflective, it also helps boost the natural light in the room,” she says.
“I did the demolition myself to save costs,” says Jamie. “Removing the bath and toilet, which was concreted in, took a lot of time on the jackhammer!”
Smooth accent The simple white backdrop allows contemporary brushed brass tapware and shower fixtures to shine. For a similar finish, try the Argent range in Brushed Gold. A timber vanity also injects warmth, while opting for a floor-standing style with an above-counter basin made for maximum storage.

Storage boost Adding storage was easy, as the dimensions of the space perfectly matched standard-size Kaboodle cabinets. On the wall, a pair of 600mm cabinets was teamed with a single 400mm cabinet. Below the bench a 600mm and 400mm cabinet sit either side of the washing machine. Sink smarts Even though the laundry is small, Jamie chose a deep, generously sized sink, good for filling buckets or tackling messy jobs, and an ideal size to sit above a 600mm Kaboodle base cabinet. Drape escape TOP TIP Measure from the floor up to the top of the window frame, then check the nearest standard length readymade curtain to determine where the brackets for the rod will be positioned
Dressing your windows for success (and warmth and privacy) is as easy as installing a rod for readymade curtains. Here’s how

N
ew curtains are a quick and easy room update. Choose a rod at least 200mm wider than the actual window, measuring from outside the frame or trim, so the full window is exposed when the curtains are open. Check the brackets are deep enough to hold the curtains away from the wall so they can be drawn easily, and the fabric can hang without creasing. Some kits have adjustable rods and brackets.
Top tip Curtains should be about double the width of the window and just skim the floor

Mark the top of the brackets either side of the actual window frame, at least 75mm above and 150mm to the side. Tip: If the window is wider than about 1200mm, or the curtains are particularly heavy, centre a third bracket above the window. Most curtain rod kits include a third bracket with fasteners.
Safety tip Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring and pipework, and turn off the power while working
With a bracket as the template, mark the holes either side of the window, using a small level to double-check they’re vertically lined up.
5
Which wall? Before drilling, you need to know what sort of wall you’re working with. Hollow plasterboard Plasterboard anchors provide a solid grip against the back of the wall. Choose anchors that can hold the combined weight of rod and curtain and check they suit 8G screws, which will be supplied with the curtain rod brackets. Masonry Use masonry anchor grips, checking they are appropriate to the weight and size screws provided with the brackets. Fit drill with a masonry bit in the size recommended on the packet to pre-drill holes for anchors.

If the curtain rod kit has adjustable brackets, assemble them using the supplied link screws with a screwdriver, adjusting the projections to be the same length. Tip: It’s easiest to assemble the brackets before affixing them to the wall, rather than after.
If the rod is adjustable, expand it to fit across the window and twist to lock. Remove one finial from the rod by unscrewing or using the supplied hex key to loosen the grub screw. Thread the rod through the curtain eyelets, tabs or pockets. Tip: For eyelets, ‘concertina’ the curtains so the end rings face outwards.
Pre-drill holes into the studs with a 3mm bit, then position the brackets and secure with supplied screws. Use a long screwdriver or extended driver bit with a drill to tighten screws. Tip: If the wall is masonry or hollow behind the plasterboard, secure screws using appropriate anchors (see ‘Which wall?’, below left).
Replace the finial, winding it back onto the rod or tightening the grub screw. Even out the curtains so one eyelet or tab is on the outside of the brackets, then position the rod, securing it to the brackets with the supplied screws to prevent sliding. ◆

hat’s the best way to get sad-looking floors like new again? Read on for advice on cleaning and caring for the most popular types of flooring. Timber finishes 4 Dirt and sand can scratch a solid timber floor, so the top tip is simply to vacuum or sweep regularly with an electrostatic mop. “These floors are best vacuumed weekly, as dust, dander and other allergens can work their way into the cracks between floorboards,” says Craig Knighton of Vax. You can also use a damp but thoroughly wrung out mop – microfibre flat mops are better than sponge or string ones here. Check your cleaning product is pH-neutral and not spirit or solvent based, avoid abrasive or concentrated detergents and never use scourers or steel wool. Minor scratches in floorboards can often be touched up using a tinted wax crayon. You can also try a touch-up pen or buffand-polish fluid. If there is a deeper scratch or ding, but the damage is not extensive enough to justify refinishing the whole floor, a timber touch-up kit might save the day.

Vinyl collection Denise Retallick of Gerflor (Senso) says, “Vinyl flooring is by far one of the easiest types of floors to maintain. Scuff marks, dirt and grime will effortlessly wipe away with any pH-neutral cleaner.” However, decades-old vinyl flooring that’s sustained heavy wear might need to be replaced. Consider self-adhesive vinyl planks, which are easy to install and very hardwearing – and in the unlikely event you manage to gouge or scrape one, there’s a simple solution: “Using a hair dryer, gently warm the damaged plank for several minutes, then prise up the edge with a utility knife until you can grab it,” says Denise. “Then just remove the plank and replace it with a new one.” } EXPERT TIP Never use a steam mop on solid timber flooring, as heat and moisture can cause the boards to deform and compromise the coating

Magic carpets Vacuuming is the best way to keep carpets clean. “A weekly vacuum would be fairly typical, but the frequency also depends on the amount of foot traffic or whether you have pets at home,” says Craig Knighton. Not just for in-between cleans, a cordless yet powerful handheld vacuum is a handy tool for tricky areas such as stairs and tight spaces. Clean spot stains using a specialist carpet stain remover, and once or twice a year, treat your carpet to a steam clean to wash out ground-in dirt – deep cleaners are available from the Hire Shop. Floating floors As with solid timber flooring, abrasion from soil and sand particles is damaging to both engineered and laminate-type floating floors. Engineered floorboards have a thin layer of real timber under the surface, so they can be sanded and refinished like solid floorboards, giving you an opportunity to reverse any damage. Laminate floors don’t have this timber layer and can’t be fixed the same way. Clean them using a damp (but not saturated) mop, or simply vacuum once a week, keeping the vacuum’s brush in the ‘up’ setting. Laminate floors are particularly sensitive to moisture, so wipe up any spills immediately. If something gets stuck on, use a plastic or wooden spatula to gently remove it – never use a scouring pad or metal implement. bunnings.co.nz |

A rough patch Sometimes, only a small area of a timber floor is scuffed – for example, near a doorway or breakfast bar. Try wiping a damp cloth over the worn area. If this makes it temporarily blend in with the rest of the floor, you may be able to get away with a patch refinish instead of a full sand-andstart-again. Choose a clear timber finish in the same sheen level as the rest of your floor; polyurethane and oil-based finishes are often better for this task than waterbased products.
5 Glitz Green eucalyptus oil cleaner, $14.98/250ml, I/N: 4460484. 6 Karcher ‘FC5’ floor cleaner, $428, I/N: 0106502.
Tip-top tiles Tiled floors can hold a surprising amount of dirt and sand. “This is especially true if you live in a dusty area or have pets,” explains Craig. As with other hard floors, vacuum weekly, then give them a solid clean by mopping with a solution of water and white vinegar – often vinegar makes ceramic tiles sparkle more brightly than chemical cleaning solutions, and it’s also gentle on the environment. Stone tiles tend to need more frequent cleaning, so a microfibre power cleaner can be a good way to save elbow grease. Only use mild solutions such as water with dishwashing liquid to avoid damaging the sealant. If they do become damaged, tiles can be difficult to repair. A cracked tile will need to be removed and replaced, which is fiddly but achievable for a confident DIYer. If you’re laying new tile floors, hold back a few spare in case of future accidents. ◆

Words Gun Arvidssen. Photography Cath Muscat, styling Tilly Roberts.
True to type Start by familiarising yourself with the basic types. LED lighting is extremely versatile, energy-efficient and tough. LED stands for ‘light-emitting diode’, a solid-state electronic component that is small, durable and can emit extremely bright light for relatively low power consumption. Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are long-lasting and energy-efficient. They use the same principle as fluorescent strip lights, but the lighting tube is ‘coiled’ or ‘folded’ into a size similar to that of incandescent globes. Halogen lights are often used for downlights. Technically a type of incandescent globe, they use halogen to produce more light at a lower wattage than other incandescent lights. Incandescent light globes – the old-style glass models – are now largely phased out due to their low efficiency and short service life.

Fix it New for old The latest globes are designed to fit the same sockets as their predecessors, for bayonet or Edison-screw fixtures. There are LED equivalents for almost any old-style lighting solution, from fancy candle globes to fluorescent tubes. In some situations, however, a CFL may be a better option; for example, a warm white LED could be a bit glaring in a desk lamp, while a CFL may provide softer illumination. Where the globe is on display and you want to channel the charm of yesteryear, try LED vintagestyle filament globes. “They have innovative filament technology, giving them a retro appearance that makes them great for decorative installations,” says Osram’s Anne Desmond. These designer globes come in different shapes and colours, from amber and gold to primary colours and even flame effects!
Safety tip If replacing light fixtures or downlights, always consult a qualified electrician
Watt, when, who The power consumption of a light globe is defined by its wattage, or how much electrical energy (measured in joules) is used by the light fitting per second. A 15W fitting, for example, will consume 15 joules of electrical energy every second to produce light. Different classes of lighting (such as LEDs

Pendants bring light down in interiors with high ceilings. Higher-hung pendants have a wider, less intense spread of light than those hung lower
DESIGN TIP For a complete change from natural-looking daylight, LED bulbs that have RGB (red/ green/blue) functionality offer countless colour variations
versus CFLs) vary in how well they convert electricity into light, so check the lumen rating; lumens are units of brightness. Unlike incandescents, different LEDs of the same wattage may vary in their lumen output. For an easier comparison of modern lights to old incandescent globes, an ‘equivalent wattage’ estimate is often included. A 6W LED globe may have a 600 lumen output, also described as ‘equivalent to a 50W traditional globe’. This means it looks about as bright as an old-fashioned 50W globe, a familiar benchmark for many people. Living colour “Colour temperature is the way we describe the light appearance produced by a light bulb, measured in Kelvin (K),” says Phil Treanor. “Temperatures for residential lighting fall somewhere from 2700K (soft/warm white) to 6500K (cool daylight).” ‘Daylight’ shades of white, which have a more bluish tinge, help us concentrate and feel alert, while warmer, creamy whites create a cosy, relaxing vibe.

Get smart With onboard connectivity to bluetooth or wi-fi, you can pop smart globes into any normal light socket and use a smartphone or home hub to control them. Depending on your hardware, you can switch them on and dim them using voice commands, as well as set them to ‘random mode’ as a burglar deterrent. Replacing halogen downlights with smart lights, such as Philips ‘Garnea’ or ‘Aphelion’, enables this control in every room of the house. “Once installed by a qualified electrician, the Garnea or Aphelion can be controlled by a Hue switch, via bluetooth on any mobile device or be configured to work with the Philips Hue Bridge,” says Phil Treanor of Signify NZ (Philips).

Wearing safety equipment, use a small flat screwdriver to pry off the upholstery tacks and remove the upholstery from the frame, pulling off the padding and foam. Avoid marking the timber while using pliers to pull out all staples, nails and pins.
Reattach the spring fixings over the seat and backrest, enlisting a second pair of hands to help hook the springs to prevent recoil. Cut and staple hessian to fit over the springs, with 50mm excess around the edges to double over as a hem to help hold the staples. With a utility knife, cut 100mm-thick foam to cover the seat and backrest, trimming the corners from the top for a rounded profile.

Remove the arms, using a wrench to loosen the nuts and bolts. Unclip the springs from the seat and backrest, holding them with gloves to prevent recoil, then remove the spring fixings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to prepare a 10L bucket with rust remover to soak and treat all the metal parts.
Position the foam over the hessian and chair back, then cut wadding to fit over the foam, pulling it taut to staple evenly under the chair frame. On the seat, position the fabric, folding the corners and cutting it with scissors, leaving 50mm hem to tuck under the chair and fold under for stapling. Install a staple at the mid-point of each side, front and back to hold the fabric, then work around the sides, pulling the fabric taut to secure with staples.
With a damp cloth, clean the arms and legs. Sand using a detail sander with a 120-grit disc to remove the old varnish. Repeat with 180-grit for a smooth finish, then remove dust with a damp cloth. Apply two coats of stain with a paintbrush, leaving to dry after each. Buff with furniture oil to finish.
To cover the backrest, stretch the fabric over the wadding, folding under the corners and creating a flap to cover the back of the chair (with the fabric folded inwards to hide the edges and prevent fraying). Find the existing holes in the frame, then punch through the fabric with a screwdriver to reattach arms using the restored bolts, washers and screws. ◆

Choose sleepers that are free of toxic chemicals and suitable for interior use
Clamp the sleepers to the sawhorses, then use a circular saw to cut them into 1m lengths. Halve one piece to make two 500mm base pieces. Tip: A standard blade isn’t wide enough to cut right through. So make the first cut, unclamp and turn the sleeper, to line up the blade of the saw with the groove and complete the cut from the opposite side.
3
Position the three long pieces together on the sawhorses, right sides facing down, then position the base pieces across them, 100mm in from the ends and 50mm in from the sides.
4
At both ends, centre a bracket over each outside piece of the tabletop, positioned flush against the base. For the middle piece, position a bracket on the inside of the bases. Secure through the holes with timber screws.

Dab adhesive onto the end-grain of the spine, then position it against the holes in the end pieces, securing with 30mm timber screws.
On the 160mm ends, measure and mark along 70mm and 90mm, and 10mm in from the side. Pre-drill through the marks with a 3mm bit.
Along the top of the end pieces, use a ruler to mark 10mm intervals, leaving 20mm at either end. Hammer wall panel nails into the marks, leaving them to protrude about 10mm.
HOW TO WE AVE
To create simple patterns, choose contrasting twines for the weft threads
Tip We used Zenith cotton shop twine for the warp, and Whites twist tie jute twine and twisted cotton twine for the weft
The vertical threads on the loom are the warp of a weave; the thread woven under and over it to create the textile is the weft. You’ll need a variety of twine and cord, scissors and a large tapestry needle (from a haberdashery store).

To make the warp, knot the shop twine around the top left nail of the loom. Pull it down to wrap around the first nail at the base, then pull up to the top and wrap around the second nail. Repeat, keeping the twine taut, until the loom is strung, knotting at the last nail.
2
Thread a 3m-length of jute through a large needle. Leaving a 50mm tail, weave the needle over and under the warp. For the next row, weave back, alternating the over-under. Repeat, pressing the rows down as you go. Tip: If changing twine, leave a tail at the beginning and end of each change.
3
To tie off the weaving, turn the loom over to pull the tails through to the back. Working on one tail at a time, thread it through the needle to make three or four stitches back through the warp. Trim the excess with scissors.
4
To finish the piece, snip the warp twine just under the nails, leaving length either side of the weaving. Separate the first two strands and tie them together with a simple knot. Tie the next two together and continue knotting along both ends. Trim to neaten both ends.

From the pine, measure, mark and cut two bases 800mm long and two sides at 300mm. From the dowel, cut six 400mm lengths and six 300mm lengths. Smooth over all the pieces with 180-grit abrasive paper.
On the side pieces, measure and mark 20mm in from the ends and 10mm in from the sides, then pre-drill holes with a 3mm bit.
On the bases, measure and mark along 100mm, 220mm, 340mm, 460mm, 580mm and 700mm. Drill halfway through the marks using a 25mm spade bit. Tip: Mark the depth on the bit with a felt-tip pen and use it as a guide to avoid drilling right through.
Position the bases upside down between the sawhorses. Apply adhesive to the ends, position the sides so the ends are flush with the bases, and secure with 30mm screws. Wear gloves to apply Danish oil with a cloth. ◆ bunnings |

Plant pick
Inside story Take your indoor jungle to the next level with easy-to-grow statement potted plants Peperomia Not only does peperomia purify the air in your home, but its thick, glossy leaves make it an excellent ornamental plant. It’s super easy to care for and perfect for areas that don’t get a lot of sunshine as it can tolerate low indirect light. Water it regularly but don’t allow it to sit in water. Nerve plant These petite plants are low growers, preferring to hug the ground in the wild, so are perfect for shallow pots, hanging baskets or terrariums. Position in a spot with bright indirect light, and water when the top 2.5cm of soil is dry. They’ll wilt dramatically if neglected, but can be revived with a good deep watering.

Parlour palm This elegant palm’s lacy darker green fronds bring in a taste of the tropics. Its attractive clumping stems create a lush, full appearance, so despite being a slow grower (eventually reaching two metres indoors), it can still make quite an impact. Grows in bright indirect light but will also survive in lower light conditions, and needs little attention.
