Fill bare patches or thicken up tired lawns with fast-growing lawn seed. Look for one that suits your climate and lawn type.

Get a wriggle on in the vegie patch. Sow seeds or plant seedlings of brassicas (see below for a few suggestions), plus leeks and climbing peas. You can still plant various leafy greens and herbs, and at this time of year they’re less likely to bolt.

Trim and feed hedges to keep them tidy and promote new growth. Propagate cuttings or add to the compost bin.

Spring-flowering bulbs, like daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, ranunculus and tulips, can now be planted in cool climes. Place in full sun with welldraining soil and enrich with compost. In warmer climates, wait until mid-late autumn.

It’s sweet pea season! The tradition is to sow seeds on St Patrick’s Day (March 17) but they can also be sown in mid-late autumn. Stake tall varieties when planting or look for dwarf forms.

With interior designer and stylist Jono Fleming, landscape designer and landscaper Inge Jabara and builder Tim Clark, we’ve taken a so-last-century home in suburban Melbourne and transformed it into a modernAustralian haven for our Make It Happen: The House Project series. KITCHEN & DINING AREA

A new floor plan and colour palette plus slimline profiles have brought the cooking, eating and socialising zones back to life

The heart of this home was a dark and awkwardly shaped space. “By opening up the entry wall and getting rid of the peninsula bench, I was able to transform it into a large family kitchen,” says Jono. He grounded the new floor plan with a central island, and personalised Kaboodle Kitchen cabinetry with paint and simple trims. “It gives the look of custom joinery and a bespoke designer kitchen, but all done with DIY,” Jono says. 

Removing an interior hallway created a much easier space to work with. “I wanted to keep the kitchen light and bright,” explains style expert Jono. Touch of luxe

The gorgeous marble look of Essential Stone in Statuario Grey on the benchtops and splashback introduces a little opulence, while offering the durability needed in a high-traffic family cook zone.

Behind closed doors

A six-tier pull-out from Kaboodle Kitchen ensures there’s no space going to waste in the pantry, while everyday appliances are hidden next door. The tiled backdrop creates an easy-clean breakfast station.

Arch genesis

In a nod to the home’s original architecture, Jono Fleming designed this arch-shaped recess. It’s a sweet spot to display cherished items without cluttering bench space.

To maximise the space left for dining, Jono created bespoke banquette seating in the corner. “This way, I was able to push the seating right up against the wall, allowing a thoroughfare between the dining and kitchen, with direct access to the bi-fold doors and back deck,” he explains. (See page 18 for more on how to DIY the timber base.) What’s the secret ingredient in the groovy wall-mounted back rests? Pool noodles! Jono upholstered the foam water toys by wrapping them in wadding and fabric, stapling to thin MDF boards and screwing in position to the walls. They provide added comfort and a hint of high-end design without the expense. A curated gallery wall injects personality, while an extendable lamp offers quirky mood lighting. 

Proud of your carpentry skills? Check out our video and be inspired to build an L-shaped banquette base

We used 18mm MDF panels to build our banquette bases and lids, cut to size with a circular saw and joined with timber adhesive and a nail gun, plus 1.2m continuous (or piano) hinges. We painted the interiors and lids, then secured the boxes in position to wall studs and to the base using 50mm screws. We then glued 134mm engineered timber floorboards in Blackbutt (see product details, previous page) to the recessed kickboards and the sides.

Style abounds in the new and improved parents’ retreat, where all design elements make the most of the compact size

Suite success

A small floor plan in the bedroom meant getting inventive to create a grand adults’ retreat, but luckily the adjoining ensuite’s layout was perfectly practical, so was kept. Jono opted for wainscoting behind the bed rather than adding a bedhead. “I wanted it to have the grandeur of a main bedroom, but adding a bedhead would make it feel smaller,” he says. “This was a DIY project and its more traditional feel elevates the room.” In the ensuite (see next page), removing an ill-placed window above the vanity allowed hanging space for a duo of mirrors, and adding a Velux skylight above the shower provided an improved source of natural light. Kitkat mosaic wall and patterned floor tiles paired with warm timber tones have a calm yet character-filled effect. 

A pendant light frees up space on the bedside table, while choosing a DIY batten-fixture model means you can swap it out whenever the mood takes you. Walls are painted in Dulux Mellow Beige

HOW TO REPAIR HOLES IN WALLS

Have picture hooks made marks, or taking out a power point left a gaping hole? View our video (below left) on how to tackle one of the most DIY-able jobs in a reno

For small holes: All you need is a tub of Selleys Spakfilla. Remove any loose plaster, then use the supplied applicator to push the ready-mixed filler into the hole in a scraping motion.

For large holes: Arm yourself with a specialist repair patch (we like Pfeiffer ‘Wall Patch’) in a suitable size. Remove any loose plaster, peel off the patch backing and centre the self-adhesive mesh over the hole, pressing into place. Using a scraper, apply a thin layer of filler, ensuring the application is smooth, then allow to dry and repeat for a second coat.

BELOW Tim Clark’s pro crew built a robust cantilevered benchtop from structural timber and James Hardie ‘Scyon Secura’ fibre cement panels. This was then waterproofed and covered with beautifully textured tiles that flow up to form a splashback. That fabulous retro wall light is a brass fitting Jono Fleming reclaimed from the living room and spray-painted black. Genius!

Sliding doors moment

“The goal in this space was to really give it that main suite energy it deserves,” says Jono Fleming. The first step? Installing blackbutt engineered flooring throughout the bedroom and robe. “Having one consistent floor makes it feel bigger,” he explains. Timber hues were also a considered choice: “Australians tend to default to light, coastal-style timbers, but we are in the suburbs, this is a family home, and I wanted it to feel warm so I chose deeper tones.” The archway entry into the wardrobe was kept in place, but the mirrored wardrobes were replaced with large open storage that extends all the way to the ceiling. Barn doors provide extra privacy. “Now, when you shut those, you have a full dressing area that can be closed off to the bedroom,” explains Jono, who also designed the smaller archway leading into the ensuite. 

A front-of-house face lift has turned this home from boring to beguiling, and added energy-saving benefits

Make an entrance

Creating ambience and setting the tone for the rest of the house was essential for landscape designer and landscaper Inge Jabara, who made sweeping changes to the design of the front garden. The old brick and picket fence was removed, along with overgrown hedges that almost barricaded the front door. “The new 1500mm high white picket fence is an ideal height for privacy – but you can still chat to your neighbours over it,” says Inge. On the front facade, new smaller double-glazed modern windows were installed along with James Hardie fibre-cement cladding over the brick. “This allowed extra insulation to go between the cladding and the house,” says Jono Fleming. He chose muted-green Dulux White Cabbage for the external paint colour to stand out on the street. A new front door was installed for a fresh first impression, with neat timber panels in a complementary stain concealing the old-fashioned ‘fancy’ columns.

STEP 1: DECIDE ON THE SHAPE

Stand back and assess the shape of the tree or shrub, deciding on the final shape and height you’d like. Tip: Keep fruit trees lower to reach ripe fruit, whereas you might like to keep a hedge tall for privacy.

STEP 2: CHECK FOR PESTS AND DISEASE

Take a closer look, inspecting for signs of pests and disease, and treat them accordingly. For example, common problems on citrus trees include citrus gall wasp, scale and powdery mildew.

STEP 3: SELECT YOUR SAW

For slicing through thick branches quickly and cleanly, go for a superversatile Ryobi 36V brushless 14 inch chainsaw. For pruning hard-toreach branches and hedges, the Ryobi 36V pole hedge trimmer and pole pruner attachment are the perfect choice. To avoid spreading disease, sterilise the blades of the saws with white spirit before and after pruning.

STEP 4: CUT THE THICKEST BRANCHES FIRST

To ensure a clean cut, use the saw to make a small cut on the bottom of the branch, then cut from the top opposite that cut. This prevents the protective cambium layer of the branch from tearing as the branch falls. Apply a prune-sealing paint to the cut to help protect the plant from possible infection and disease.

STEP 5: TRIM INNER BRANCHES FOR AIRFLOW

Good airflow prevents the build-up of moisture on the leaves and allows in more sunshine, helping prevent disease. Increase airflow by pruning some of the smaller branches inside the tree.

STEP 6: SHAPE THE TREE

Shape the plant beautifully using your Ryobi 36V pole hedge trimmer for smaller branches and leaves. Then step back and admire your handiwork!

When Eleesha and husband Brock bought their 1990s home in a quiet seaside town in Queensland two years ago, the kitchen wasn’t a selling point. “It was dark, poky and definitely not somewhere you’d want to spend time,” says Eleesha, who documents life with the couple’s three young daughters on Instagram (@the.quinn.girls). Yet the house soon grew on the family, prompting Eleesha to customise the kitchen with everything she loved.

Planning process

As they live in a regional area, Eleesha booked a virtual – rather than face-to-face – consultation with a kitchen design expert through Bunnings In Home Services‡. This assisted with layout decisions and ensured storage was maximised with clever solutions. The kitchen stayed in the original location, but morphed from a compact U-shape into a larger galley-style layout, taking in space from a former home office to create a butler’s pantry. The result is a streamlined, modern area.

Style direction

Inspired by the bones of the original house, Eleesha chose a coastal style combining traditional and modern influences. “White and stone were key to the new palette, as it brightened the kitchen and ensured it flowed with adjoining dining and living spaces,” she says. Silk-finish cabinetry and timeless square-edged, marble-look engineered stone benchtops team with walls in Dulux Natural White. Above the island, a trio of downlights provides task lighting when needed.

Concealed assets

Many of the family’s favourite features, like the pull-out bins and a Hafele pop-up recharge/power point, are hidden. “As we spend so much time around the island bench, it’s actually the most-used power point in the house. I love that it disappears seamlessly into the benchtop when we’re finished with it,” says Eleesha. 

Converting an unused room into a butler’s pantry dramatically increased the kitchen’s storage and created a second prep zone. For a cohesive look, the same palette of finishes –such as sleek white cabinetry – flows throughout, with the brass handles and gooseneck sink mixer giving subtle metallic touches.

A generous 53L undermount sink can accommodate the largest of saucepans or oven trays, while VJ panels painted in Dulux Natural White act as a textural backdrop below a bank of wall units, lit up at night with LED strip lights mounted under the cabinetry.

A tall cupboard next to the fridge functions as a pantry, while pull-out baskets in corner cupboards ensure no potential storage space is wasted.

So your kitchen is dated and dysfunctional, but you have limited cash for an expensive remodel? Don’t fret! Restoring, refreshing and reorganising your existing kitchen can transform the space for much less than you might think. While a full renovation could cost tens of thousands of dollars, these savvy updates can give you instant impact for only hundreds.

Surface spruce-up

Whether you’re looking for a cosy farmhouse style or a sleek modern look, vertical-join lining is a fantastic way to DIY some character into a plain space. It’s easy to install over existing walls and is hard-wearing, with pre-primed and moistureresistant panels available.

For a more dramatic effect, select two distinct tones. “To create a striking contrast, consider bolder colours such as blues and greens for cabinetry and trims, while sticking to neutrals and whites for the walls and benchtops,” suggests Andrea.

John Harrison of Kaboodle Kitchen says handles are like jewellery for your kitchen. “They are a small piece but can make a huge impact on the overall aesthetic,” he explains. “Swapping out polished chrome handles for a streamlined matt-black option or a brushed-brass finish will instantly elevate the space.”

Before making a final decision, pop in store and see what you like the look and feel of. If you’re unsure how they will match with existing cupboard and drawer colours, create a moodboard to get a better impression.

While you’re focused on kitchen bling, another easy switch is the kitchen tap. A new and modern mixer will give your space a huge lift for little cost – plus you can match it to your new hardware, with an on-trend brass, black or white finish.

Storage satisfaction

Blank wall space presents a chance to install open shelving – a chic addition to any kitchen. “Floating shelves will add dimension and give you an opportunity to style them with decorative objects or use the area for more storage,” says John. “Benchtop offcuts work really well, if you’re thinking about updating your benchtops at the same time.”

If your surfaces are cluttered with appliances, utensils and cookbooks, they can impair the way you work in your kitchen. Make a practical update by improving storage. “Retrofitting wireware systems, such as pull-out pantries and rotating corner baskets, will help improve the functionality of your space without committing to an entire renovation,” says John.

Benchtop revival

The layout and size might be just fine but, if a benchtop is looking worse for wear, it can bring a whole kitchen down. Transform it with benchtopspecific specialist paint. “Adding an interesting lighter colour to benchtops can immediately brighten up the area and make it appear more light and airy,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr. She suggests a shade such as Dulux Winter Fog, a neutral, warm greige with an interesting depth.

Is granite on your wish list but not within your budget? Rust-Oleum has a granite-look DIY paint kit in white or black, to transform dated or worn benchtops in a weekend.

If the surface is truly beyond repair, replacing it does require moderate DIY skills but not extensive work or outlay, says John. “A timber or timber-look benchtop will instantly add warmth and texture, whereas a stone-look option will brighten your space and give it a sense of luxury,” he explains.

Light appeal

The right kind of lighting will enhance both the functionality and ambience of a space. A few tweaks or additions can make a big difference, often for less than $100. “Lighting adds the perfect accessory to your decor, much like adding shoes to an outfit,” says Brilliant Lighting’s Debbie Paice. Available in a vast array of styles, pendants can bring design flair and brighten dark islands or help define kitchen and dining zones. DIY pendants have the added advantage of not requiring an electrician for installation.

Under-cabinet LED bars lend an upmarket feel, says Debbie, while colour-changing lighting can switch the vibe of the space, turning it from a functional family area to an entertaining zone in an instant.

The next level up from your basic barbecue, an outdoor kitchen is not only a functional addition to a serious entertaining space, it can also make a design statement! The best way to dress your alfresco kitchen zone to impress is to look to your interiors for inspiration as a starting point.

Identify your style

Interior architect Sally Rhys-Jones (sallyrhysjones.com) suggests you begin with the style of your home. “The

outside is an extension of the indoors and should flow through,” she says. “Is your style classic, coastal, Hamptons or modern and sleek? For example, if you have shaker-style joinery in your kitchen, replicate it outside. Or choose a colour that is used internally.”

Also look at the textures and colours your outdoor kitchen space will be sitting alongside. Landscape design expert Jason Hodges, of Adbri Masonry, recommends complementing the existing area by matching the colour of pavers to roof tiles, guttering, bricks or render.

Choosing cabinets

The big issue with outdoor kitchens is finding materials that can handle the elements. “A lot of materials are not suitable to be used externally, especially if you don’t have full cover to protect from the rain and sun,” says Sally.

Opt for cabinets specifically designed for outdoor use. AlfrescoPlus outdoor kitchens, for example, are built from solid PVC panels and a patented aluminium framing system. “Our cabinets are impervious to water, as are the compact laminate doors and end panels,” says Jon Gumley of AlfrescoPlus.

While their materials may differ, colour can help to link indoor and outdoor cabinetry. “AlfrescoPlus’ contemporary colours – Arctic White, Cadet Grey and Black Onyx – suit the styling of most homes,” says Jon Gumley.

Benchtop options

Visually consistent benchtops between the interior and exterior is a great look, but even the hardiest benchtop materials are often not recommended for exterior spaces –check with the manufacturer if unsure.

Porcelain is a great solution and is durable enough to carry through outside. Engineered stone products are tricky as some are more suitable than others. ”AlfrescoPlus’ black acrylic quartz benchtops are highly resistant to scratching, aggressive chemicals and high temperatures,” says Jon.

Tiles are another hardy bench option. “I like to choose a colour that we have used inside and tile the whole barbecue area in that,” says Sally Rhys-Jones. “It’s durable and you can hose it clean!”

On the ground

Continuing the same floor tiles from inside to out, or using pavers or tiles of a similar colour and size, instantly creates a sense of flow and helps to blur the boundary between inside and out. However, first consider practicalities such as slip rating and level of use. “The heavier the traffic, the thicker the paver should be,” advises Jason Hodges.

If you have timber flooring inside, match it with decking timbers running in the same direction and stained in the same colour for a cohesive look.

Finishing touches

Smaller elements can really bring a space together, so don’t overlook the finer details. Replicate tongue-andgroove wall panelling inside with a water-resistant panel outside, select a similar style of lighting or outdoor ceiling fans and use your indoor dining setting as inspiration for bar stools, outdoor table and chairs. Even having the same colour fabric on cushions can create a feeling of continuity.

Suspend a birdbath out of reach of predators –use a small stick as an extra perch

Agarden can be more than just a place to sit and smell the roses. It’s an opportunity to attract wildlife and create a thriving ecosystem in your backyard.

Increasing urbanisation has displaced much of our local fauna but, as gardeners, we can do our bit to help by providing a safe habitat and food resource for a host of beneficial creatures. Some birds and insects are valuable pollinators, predatory frogs and lizards feed on insect pests, and beetles, slaters and millipedes break down decaying plant matter, adding essential nutrients to the soil.

On top of that, there’s great joy to be had from pottering in a garden full of beautiful butterflies and bees, listening for the evening call of frogs, watching honeyeaters busy at work in a grevillea or spying a blue-tongue lizard sunning itself on a rock. Bunnings Greenlife buyer Katy Schreuder says being able to observe nature in our own backyard can improve wellbeing and mindfulness. “Even something as simple as a well-placed birdbath can offer a critical water source for birds during dry weather and gives hours of pleasure to the keen observer who can watch the different visitors

throughout the day,” she says. Read on to find out how to attract more wildlife into your garden.

Food for thought

To encourage year-round visitors, include a diverse selection of plants, suggests Katy. “Natives with different flowering seasons throughout the year, like banksia, leptospermum, callistemon and grevillea, can provide valuable nectar for many birds and insects,” she says. “Perennial flowers such as lavender, salvia and rosemary also attract insects – which are pollinators as well as a valuable part of the food chain for other creatures such as frogs, birds and reptiles.”

Flowering annuals like alyssum, cosmos, marigold, sunflower and zinnia, and herbs including borage, thyme and rosemary are also great for attracting bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.

BALANCE OF NATURE

Native birds, reptiles and insects all play a crucial part in a healthy ecosystem.

Hide and seek

Creating different levels with tiered planting will provide opportunities for a variety of native fauna to feed, nest and take shelter. “Choose plants with different heights – low groundcovers, mid-level shrubs and trees, and canopy trees – to give a wide range of choices for varioussized creatures,” says Katy.

Good native groundcover options include fan-flower (Scaevola), cut-leaf daisy (Brachyscome), creeping boobialla (Myoporum parvifolium) and Grevillea ‘Bronze Rambler’. For trees and shrubs, try correa, westringia, abelia, buddleia, callistemon, leptospermum, flowering eucalypts, wattle and banksia. You don’t need to plant one of each – grouping a few of the same variety together is ideal.

A pile of logs or rocks may look unassuming but can be a protective haven for small insects and reptiles.

“It gives them a spot for shelter and refuge from the elements,” says Katy. “Similarly, ‘insect hotels’ can be used as a nesting or sheltering habitat for a range of different insect species, including solitary bees and other native pollinators.”

Thirsty work

Jac Semmler, horticulturist and creative director of plant practice Super Bloom (@jac.semmler), suggests including water sources to encourage and support wildlife. “Consider placing sticks or stones in any water trough or pond so bees and lizards have safe access and escape from the water,” she advises.

A birdbath is perhaps the easiest way to provide water for wildlife - place it in a sheltered spot where the birds will feel protected, keep the water fresh and clean, then enjoy the show!

Water for wildlife should be topped up regularly and cleaned frequently, says Katy. And always be mindful of children and the dangers of water, whether the body of water is small, large, shallow or deep. Before putting in a water source such as a pond, “check with your local council for pool regulations,” she says. Also, consider safety features such as a mesh cover.

What not to do

Where possible, avoid having any bare ground in your garden. “There’s a plant out there for any situation

that will help draw birds, beneficial insects and other wonders into our gardens,” says Jac. “Verges or nature strips are also great places to plant out and encourage wildlife, so do what you can to increase the greenlife in your neighbourhood.” Rules and regulations regarding the planting of nature strips vary according to where you live, so check with your local council before planting anything outside your property.

If planting every bit of the garden isn’t possible, spread a layer of organic mulch or decaying leaf litter over unplanted areas. This can help to suppress weed growth and provide a welcome habitat for beetles and other small insects, as well as adding organic matter to the soil as it breaks down.

Also try to protect wildlife from your pets. “Fenced areas can help keep curious pets and local fauna apart,” Katy says. “Cats should not be allowed to roam at night and should wear a collar with a bell to warn birds of their approach.” While it’s tempting to feed wildlife, Katy says it’s not a good idea. “Feeding bread to birds can lead to increased risk of diseases and environmental pollution,” she says. “Instead, create an environment where they have access to plenty of natural food sources.” And when birds, bees and other wildlife visit, observe but try not to disturb them.

Eat, cook, play

Spending more time at home means the role of the kitchen is changing, says John Harrison of Kaboodle Kitchen.

“Today’s kitchens double as spaces where meals are enjoyed, act as an office when working from home and can even integrate a European laundry for clever use of space,” he explains.

Companies have stepped up with versatile appliances such as the Teka 12 function SteakMaster oven, which includes a grill for barbecue-style meat cooking. Kleenmaid has a multifunction oven that can cook like an airfryer, while its 454mm-high, built-in combi steam oven can also microwave, grill and convection cook.

Consumers are also embracing the power, accuracy and efficiency of induction cooktops, says Nicholas Cary of Teka. Its latest range features pre-programmed temperature sensors.

The future will see us increasingly looking to disguise the kitchen’s

functionality so it can star as an appealing living space. Low-profile induction cooktops already deliver that barely-there effect, but new models, like Elica’s Prime downdraft induction cooktop, have an integrated extractor, which means no overhead rangehood is needed.

Wash-zone wonders

Over in the bathroom, technology continues to evolve, says Andy Grigor of Methven. “There is a movement to transition from the smart home to the thoughtful home,” he explains. “We are working on hidden technology that helps meet everyday demands, with products that have intuitive features that use several metrics to predict your needs.” Think showers that ‘learn’ what temperature and water flow you like. Water efficiency is also front and centre – consider Methven’s Airstream and Satinjet technologies, which give a full-on shower experience with less water.

Pretty and practical

With the importance of hygiene and wellness accelerated over recent years, sensor taps and hands-free toilet flushing are coming to our homes. The Cassien sensor basin mixer turns the water on with a wave of your hand.

Beyond colour, adds Luke Di Michiel of Caroma, “we are seeing significant momentum towards matt finishes as they give a softer, more tactile feel.”

Eau naturel

Timber continues to trend in kitchens, thanks to its eco-friendly credentials and natural good looks. It’s a finish that’s easy to live with and can be used throughout the home – for example, timber cabinetry that extends through an open-plan space into joinery for the living areas.

This trend is big in bathrooms, too. “Introducing natural materials including timber to your bathroom design scheme is the fastest way to add warmth and visual interest,” says Jo, who points to the Cibo Design ‘Nordic’ vanity in Coast veneer. Splash out with paint

Colour nerves needn’t be an issue in a powder room – just think, it won’t take long to change it if your passion for, say, passionfruit hues wanes! Pink, bold jewel tones and even black and gold can all grace the walls here to stunning effect. These rooms often have limited light which allows you to be daring with colour, says Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr. “Why not do something exciting on the walls such as a deep blue, like Dulux Snap-Shot or Surf’n’Dive? You could also go with some subtle warmth such as gentle pink Dulux Mornington Half,” she suggests. When adding colour, Andrea says to keep in mind that warmer hues work well with fittings in brushed brass or copper, while cooler colours are well suited to black, brushed titanium or pewter tapware.

Tile with style

Add finishing touches

Even small details, such as toiletries, plush hand towels in matching colours, a scented candle and indoor plants, can all help make this pint-sized room feel more inviting. With space at a premium, house these on a small, strategically placed shelf.

Bring in glamour and designer punch with tiles – full accent walls and patterned floors are great options to boost the wow factor. If the budget is limited, half-wall tiling from the sink to the ground is an option to bring visual interest to a blank space. On even smaller budgets, make the pièce de résistance the splashback, a place where guests have a moment to pause and admire the details. Tiles in metallics and jewel tones lend a luxurious feel, while marble has timeless appeal. Tiling the space in all black or red gives a daring and dramatic impact, and geometrics add a modern vibe.

Hang paper that pops

If there’s a place to try wallpaper for the first time, a powder room is it! Superfresco Easy trends and design expert Paula Taylor says that as pattern and colour can have intense mood-enhancing properties, adding pattern to a wall instantly ups the welcoming atmosphere. “It can be used to express the personality of the homeowner, or to create a calming, neutral environment for all to feel comfortable in,” she says. Brave choices may be bold in colour and design but, for a safer selection, soft hues, florals and fauna will add more low-key personality. Wallpaper should last if not exposed to splashes from the basin, but it isn’t recommended for humid areas such as full bathrooms with showers.

Turn on the light fantastic

Here’s the place to have a licensed electrician install that to-die-for chandelier, showstopping pendant or stylish sconce. Ideally, you’ll have lights on either side of the mirror (or one above if space is an issue) for guests to freshen up, and one dimmer light overhead for ambience.

Switch focus to a vanity

If there’s enough room, consider replacing a pedestal sink with a vanity. This provides storage and can also serve as a design focal point, says Jo Ingleton at Cibo. “It will help take the focus away from a centrally positioned toilet that likely faces the entry door,” she says. Flair can be added with a stylish countertop basin, installed by a licensed plumber. “The fixtures, fittings and tiles can then be selected to complement the standout basin,” says Jo.

Mix it up with mirrors

Wide-framed mirrors double as art, with space around them for decorative elements such as metallic finishes, glass mosaics or tiles. Round and square mirrors fit most spaces, but this is a place where you can try something rectangular, oval, or even irregular or custom-made.

When enthusiasm strikes, it can be tempting to launch into a DIY project, drill blazing. Yet without an organised approach, a setback can sideline a project as quickly as it’s begun. Before picking up the tools, channel your energy into researching, planning and allowing a realistic time frame from the outset.

Bunnings Workshop community member and keen DIYer Rufaro (@hausdiy_wknder) says there are always new or improved ways of tackling things. “Researching means you reduce the likelihood of mistakes,” he explains. “But not everything goes smoothly and allowing for additional time – regardless of your level of confidence – means you can focus more on the process.”

Time it right

There are many factors that influence scheduling DIY. If it’s an exterior painting or deck-oiling job, a good weather forecast is a must. Getting started may depend on a friend’s availability, a licensed tradie, equipment hire, or when the project receives council approval. Ultimately, only begin a job when you have plenty of time on hand to allow for unexpected issues, says Bunnings team member and Workshop community guru Mitch Mclean (@MitchellMc). “Running out of time can result in cutting corners or making costly mistakes,” he says. “Holiday periods or weekends are often excellent opportunities to work on projects, but also keep in mind that if professional assistance is required, it might not be available.”

Get in the know

Always thoroughly research what’s involved, advises Bunnings magazine contributor and DIY specialist Natasha Dickins (@LittleRedIndustries). “Watch how-to videos or call manufacturer technical support helplines for a chat about best practices,“ she suggests.

Also double-check details such as dry times or types of fasteners. “Measure the area and draw a diagram to help resolve issues before you start,” says Natasha Dickins. For more complex projects, use a spreadsheet to map the order of work and track the budget.

Have a goal to kick

Setting an achievable deadline can be a great motivator. Rufaro suggests splitting a project into smaller phases. “This can be spread over a few days or weekends,” he says. “Realistic time frames allow you to focus on each phase without feeling overwhelmed, helping maintain the quality of work.”

Mitch Mclean also recommends being flexible. “Don’t box yourself into a corner with only one job you can complete on a certain day,” he says. “Plan for two options and do the most beneficial task first.”

Learn to love lists

Organise all required materials and tools in advance. Compiling a list and crossing off items as they’re acquired will help to streamline the project and ensure nothing is forgotten. Natasha suggests checking what tools and materials are already at home before starting to shop. “I then go online and

make a detailed list of everything required, right down to how many screws and which aisle to find them in.” Online calculators can help work out quantities and cost estimates for floor coverings, paint and decking oil. When ordering materials like flooring, Natasha advises adding an extra 10 per cent for wastage and breakage and up to 15 per cent if it needs to be laid in a pattern like herringbone, which requires lots of cuts.

Put safety first

Before starting any DIY project, make sure you have the necessary skills and correct tools and wear appropriate safety equipment, advises Mitch. “With electrical and plumbing work, assume unless you’re changing a light globe or replacing a showerhead or tap washer, you’ll need a licensed professional. If in doubt, check with your local electrical safety or building authority.”

When tackling the basics, Natasha advises turning off the water or mains power and, in the event of bad weather, being prepared to move or cover your worksite. “Also, avoid projects you can’t physically manage, such as climbing up a ladder if you get vertigo, or using heavy materials you can’t lift on your own,” she says.

Walls ready for a refresh? A pro-level job starts with a perfectly prepped surface

The secret to a quality paint job is in the prep. Okay, it’s not the most glamorous part of the task, but it’s one step you won’t want to skip. The work you put in beforehand will deliver you a finish to be proud of and, with help from Selleys, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. GET CLEANING

Start by washing your walls. Selleys Sugar Soap cuts through grease and grime (if only all cleaning was so easy!). Put down a drop cloth to protect your precious floors and pull on some rubber gloves. Remove any nails or hooks from the wall, then use sandpaper to sand over any rough or flaky bits. Dilute some Sugar Soap in a bucket with water (as per packet instructions) and use a cloth to wash off any dirt, dust and scuff marks. Done!

2. TACKLE DINGS

Don’t let dents and small cracks ruin your paint job. With a ready-to-use filler

like Selleys Spakfilla Rapid, covering over the cracks is an easy job for any DIYer. Simply apply a small amount of Spakfilla Rapid to the included scraper and draw it across the hole or dent. Skim over the area in both directions a few times to push out air bubbles, then firmly draw down the surface, leaving a small amount of overfill. Allow to dry, as per pack instructions, then lightly sand smooth and brush off the dust.

FILL THE GAPS

The last thing your beautifully painted walls need is a gappy border around every architrave, window or door frame. Selleys No More Gaps makes filling gaps so much easier, thanks to the easy-squeeze tube, and it’s great for getting into those awkward corners. Make sure you’re starting with a clean, dry surface – give it a wipe before you start. Cut the tip of the tube at a 45-degree angle and gently squeeze it into the gap. Use a wet

finger to smooth over the top and clean up any excess with a damp cloth. Give it at least 20 minutes to dry before painting over it with water-based paint, or allow 24-48 hours if using ceiling or oil-based paints.

1 Mark out the path edges with a shovel, then measure both sides to determine the lengths of garden edging. Multiply the length of the path by its width to work out the square-metre area to be covered by all other materials. Tip: Our path is 750mm wide by 5m long, requiring 10 edging lengths, 90 pegs, eight bags of sand, 28 stones, five bags of potting mix and 20 plants.

2 Use a hoe to break the surface and move dirt and debris into a wheelbarrow with a shifting shovel, keeping it to use as backfill. On a length of 70mm treated pine cut to the width of the path, mark 30mm up to use as a guide to create a flat, smooth base with 30mm-deep edges. Tip: Watering with a hose helps soften the ground for digging.

3 Position lengths of garden edging, end-to-end, joining by bending the interlocking tabs with a screwdriver. Run the edging along the outside of the path, on the raised sides, with the tabs facing out, tapping 7mm pegs through the holes with a rubber mallet. Cover the pegs and tabs with backfill to help hold the edging in place.

4 Position bags of landscaping sand on the path. Cut the bases open with a utility knife and pour it out, using a soil spreader to create an even surface. Using the back of a hoe, firm down the sand, which will hold the stones in place while allowing for drainage. Tip: Use the back of a metal garden rake if you don’t have a spreader.

5 Position the stones, matching the shapes and depths with even gaps of about 150mm between them to allow for the plant root balls. Tap the stones lightly with a rubber mallet to bed them into the sand, checking the heights are even with a level. Tip: Ensure the stones are level to avoid a trip hazard. 1 2 3 4 6 7 5

6 Use a scoop to add a layer of potting mix between the stones to the same height, digging holes to position the plants. Hose the path with a light mist to set the sand and water in the plants. Tip: Until the plants are established, check around the stones after heavy rain to add sand and potting mix into any gaps.

For this tired bedside, we chose a super-tactile look: chalky matt paint over primer formulated for covering glossy surfaces, textured paintable wallpaper and chic leather and brass pulls.

Keep in mind...

n If using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use.

n When painting or using aerosols like spray adhesive, work in a well-ventilated area, wear a mask, eye protection and gloves, and protect surrounds with a drop sheet.

1 Working in a well-ventilated area, set out a drop sheet and place the bedside cabinet on top. Take out the drawers and remove the handles with a screwdriver. Use a scraper to smooth over the handle holes with timber filler, leaving to dry. Sand with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove excess.

2 On the outside of the cabinet, use an orbital sander with a 120-grit abrasive disc to smooth over larger, flat areas. Next, smooth all over using 180-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block. Tip: There’s no need to completely remove the finish, you just need to create a ‘key’ for the primer.

3 Wipe away any dust with a damp microfibre cloth. Stir three-in-one primer for about five minutes, then apply using an angled brush along the edge profiles and corners, and a mini microfibre roller for the larger, flat areas. Leave to dry thoroughly.

4 Stir the chalk paint well and, in the same way as the primer, apply two coats to the outside of the cabinet, leaving to dry thoroughly after each coat. Tip: We used a chalk-effect paint, which has good coverage and a durable, scratch-resistant surface.

5 With the wallpaper facing right-side down, mark around the drawer fronts with a pencil, adding clearance on all sides. Cut with scissors. Tip: For the clearance, add 10mm to the thickness of the drawer front, which is usually about 20mm. Cut the corners with 45° angles to easily fit around the edges.

6 Spray contact adhesive over the front and sides of the drawer fronts, as well as the underside of the wallpaper. Leave the adhesive to become touch-dry according to the pack instructions. When ready, position the paper, folding the sides over the drawer-front edges. Press to hold.

7 Stir hard-wearing, low-sheen paint thoroughly, then use a clean brush to apply two coats over the wallpaper covering the drawer fronts, leaving to dry after each coat. Tip: To give the wallpaper a woven rattan or linen look, choose a creamy beige tone (we used Dulux Basketweave Beige).

8 Mark the centre of the drawer fronts, 40mm down from the top, and drill right through with a 4mm bit. Check the depth of the drawer front against the handles’ supplied snap-off screws and adjust to fit with a spanner and combination pliers. Screw in the handles and replace the drawers.

An essential power tool for the handyperson’s workshop is the jigsaw. This powerful yet nimble must-have is highly manoeuvrable, with a narrow blade that extends down through the base plate and moves in a vertical action at high speed. It can easily cut curves and intricate shapes, is equally great for straight lines, and there’s almost nothing to set up or adjust – aim along the cut line and away you go.

Battery or cord?

Cordless jigsaws are convenient and portable, making them handy for projects such as outdoor planter boxes. However, if you’re planning to do a lot of jigsawing – especially in a workshop or garage, where plugging in is not a problem –a corded model will provide more power and higher performance.

Mains-powered jigsaws are available in a range of power options, from around 350W to more than 800W. The more powerful models will cut through thicker timber and other materials more easily, however a lot depends on the quality of the

saw and the blade. Tools aimed at DIYers are a great entry point but, for a truly professional finish, high-end tools are worth the investment.

How it works

The base plate of a jigsaw is like a ‘skid’ that runs along the material you’re cutting. It can be tilted to either side – typically by loosening a retaining bolt using a hex key –allowing you to make bevel (angled) cuts. Base plates are not meant to be interchangeable. Some brands include a plastic shoe attached to the underside of the base plate, intended to prevent scuff marks that can be caused by the steel of the base plate. Many jigsaws are sold with a rip fence that allows you to make cuts parallel to the edge of a workpiece; for example, to cut decking boards to a non-standard width.

Cutting moves

Using the pendulum feature of a jigsaw angles the blade slightly forward for a swinging, circular/ oscillating action, rather than just straight up and down, explains Scott Tinsley of Ryobi.

“This provides a faster, more aggressive cut, but can leave you with a rougher finish and more splintering along the edges,” he says. “The pendulum action is perfect for thicker applications like cutting into laminate countertops for installation of sinks or basins.”

Safety first

All jigsaws have a metal guard in front of the blade mount, shielding fingers and random bits of timber from the blade or mount. Variable speed is another standard feature. While jigsaw cutting is mostly done at full speed, Paul Nosko of Bosch says there are times when it’s wise to slow the stroke rate. “When cutting plastictype materials, a fast stroke rate can create too much heat, potentially melting the plastic,” he warns.

Blade options

Most jigsaws are sold with generalpurpose blades, but it’s worth buying specialised blades if you’re planning to cut materials such as laminate or acrylic. “As a rule of thumb, less teeth means a more aggressive, faster cut, as the gullets between the teeth are deeper,” Paul says. “On blades with a higher tooth count, teeth will be smaller, giving a cleaner finish.”

Specialty blades (either sold separately or as kits) will let you cut materials ranging from metal to ceramics effectively and neatly. “Materials that are quite dense should be sawed at a lower speed to reduce friction/heat as much as possible, with the pendulum action off,” he says.

Before changing the blade of a cordless jigsaw, remove the battery from the unit. “For a corded model, ensure the AC outlet powering it has been turned off,” says Scott. “Wear gloves to avoid cuts and scratches when handling blades, and ensure the blade is seated securely,” he warns.

Use the included hex key to loosen the retaining bolt that locks the base plate into its default perpendicular position, then push the base plate backwards to disengage the locking teeth and tilt it to the angle you require. Once you have set the angle, return the base plate to its forward (locking) position and re-tighten the bolt. On some jigsaws, the base plate is unlocked using a quick-release lever instead of a hex key.

CUT AN ENCLOSED OPENING

The narrow blade on a jigsaw means you can create openings in timber or sheet materials without cutting in from the edge of your workpiece. Just drill a 10mm starter hole inside the shape you need to cut out, position the blade inside it, and saw to the cut line from inside the waste area.

MAKE A PLUNGE CUT

You can also ‘dive in’ to a cut without drilling a starter hole by resting the front edge of the base plate against the surface of your work piece. With the pendulum action disengaged, switch the saw on at maximum speed and gently swing the base plate down onto the timber or other material you’re cutting, so the blade starts sawing into the surface. Once the blade has penetrated all the way through the work piece, you can continue sawing as usual.

Emergencies can affect households throughout the year, but particularly during bushfire, storm and flood seasons. As Adam Elms of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises, preparation is key. “Educating yourselves and others about fire and storm safety and preparing for an event is the best way to help minimise the potential impact,” he says. Here’s our guide to jobs you can do in and around the house, creating an action plan and packing an emergency kit.

Check the perimeter

Risks vary according to location but, wherever you live, there are many ways to help make your home safer. Glenn Alderton at Queensland State Emergency Service recommends removing debris from around your home. “Also clear gutters and trim tree branches – these are all small steps that can make a big difference during severe weather,” he says. Regularly inspect your roof for leaks, and check gutters and downpipes for rust, loose fixings, blockages or cracks.

Be bushfire savvy

If you live in a bushfire-prone area, there’s plenty you can do to minimise risk, advises Ben Shepherd of the

NSW Rural Fire Service. Remove excess vegetation plus leaf litter from gutters and keep lawns trimmed. Cut back any trees and shrubs overhanging buildings and ensure your house number is clearly visible and your block has adequate access. “And make sure you have hoses long enough to reach around your property,” he says. Help keep embers out of the house by installing metal gutter guards, enclosing spaces under the home and adding metal mesh over your windows and vents. “Installing a sprinkler system to the gutters will help dampen litter and extinguish embers,” says Ben. “Make sure you have a reliable source of water like a pool, tank or dam, and a diesel/petrol pump.”

Stay alert and alarmed

Day to day, it’s essential that all homes have working smoke alarms. “If your smoke alarm is older than 10 years, it should be replaced,” says Adam Elms. “Photoelectric smoke alarms are recommended as they’re generally more effective across a wider range of fires, and are less likely to falsely activate,” he adds. Press the test button monthly, and vacuum around the alarm to remove dust or cobwebs.

Plan to succeed

Preparation isn’t just about cleaning up around the house – it’s also about having a bushfire survival plan. Involve all household members to create one and practise it. “So if your home is threatened by fire, you know when you will go, where you will go and what you will take,” says Ben Shepherd. Check your home, contents and car insurances are up to date and suitable.

Organise supplies

Put together an emergency kit you can grab in a flash. “The kit should be filled with three days’ worth of non-perishable food, water, warm clothes, medications, first aid supplies, important documents and valuables,” says Glenn Alderton. Pack batteries, torches, basic toiletries, a radio and a phone charger, too.

Know the danger zone

Staying informed and in contact with people is critical if an emergency seems imminent. “The new Australian Fire Danger Rating System has simplified the identification of bushfire risks throughout Australia,” says Adam. Visit afdrs.com.au to find out more about the system.

Tune into local radio for regular storm, flood and bushfire warnings and to keep up to date with road closures, evacuation alerts and emergency shelter locations.

Identify your home’s mains supplies for water, power and gas and check you know how to turn them off. Have a torch handy, keep devices fully charged and stock food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated or cooked. It’s also good practice to switch off any electrical items not in use.

“In the event of a storm, residents should secure loose items around their homes such as trampolines, outdoor furniture and barbecues,” advises Glenn.

Also check in with your neighbours to see if they’re suitably prepared, recommends Adam, and lend a hand or offer supplies when needed.

If possible, bring pets inside and make contingency arrangements in the event that animals need to be relocated.

Dichondra

A fast-growing groundcover with green kidney-shaped leaves, it forms a dense mat with delicate stems that cascade beautifully. Although dichondra may creep into lawns, this can be controlled with physical barriers or pruning. Tolerant of light foot traffic, it can be used as a lawn substitute.

Convolvulus

This hardy perennial has attractive soft-green leaves year-round. From spring to autumn, it’s smothered with mauve or blue funnel-shaped flowers. Spreading up to 2m, its tumbling habit makes it perfect for draping over walls and containers. Prefers full sun or part shade with well-draining soil.

Hardenbergia
