Control weeds in the vegie patch, along paths and in garden beds. They can harbour pests and diseases and steal valuable water and nutrients from plants. Build frames around cold or frost-sensitive plants, cover overnight with a frost cloth and remove in the morning. Move pots into warm, protected spots, such as indoors or in a greenhouse.

Prepare planting spots for new deciduous trees and shrubs. Pick a spot with welldrained soil and enrich with plenty of organic matter. Delay planting until mid-winter when trees and shrubs are at their most dormant.

Look out for lawn weeds, especially the fine, fern-like leaves of bindii or jo-jo. Treat at first sight with a weedkiller for lawns.

Reduce watering of indoor plants and move them away from heat sources or cool draughts. If your home is darker in winter, put plants near a window, or use a grow light.

One way to make an impact is to reduce the amount of things going to landfill by re-using materials and creative upcycling.

Snow Peas

Provide a sturdy trellis to support this vigorous climber. Its flat pods are delicious raw or cooked.

Spinach

A kitchen-garden staple, this iron-rich veg is easy to grow in pots or garden beds. Harvest leaves as needed.

Stake this legume to prevent the pod-heavy plants from toppling over. Pick pods when young and tender.

Bunnings Workshop community member Liesel (@lieselroberts) did just that when she needed a new bookshelf – and this secondhand one was perfect for her project. “I just love the VJ back panel,” she says. After a thorough sand with 120-grit sandpaper, two coats of primer and three coats of leftover house paint, the salvaged bookshelf is now a living room statement piece that’s simple to restyle. “It’s a beautiful feature and so easy to change up and give our space a seasonal refresh,” she says.
