Modern, characterfilled and fit for a busy family – it’s hard to believe this stylish Melbourne abode was a dated 1980s house before the Make It Happen team arrived. The home overhaul was delivered by interior designer and stylist Jono Fleming (@jono.fleming), landscaper Inge Jabara (@ingejabara landscapes) and builder Tim Clark (@timmatau), with Jono leading the interior revamp. “I wanted everything to feel cohesive, but to ensure certain rooms still had their own personalities,” says Jono. “There are a lot of different colours in the house, but they work well together to tell one story.”
Living Room
In this warm and welcoming space, there’s now room for the whole family to gather
Seeing green
Nature was a major inspiration for the colours and textures of the living room. “I wanted to make it feel cosy so I chose a beautiful light tan tone for the walls, Dulux Recycled, paired with Dulux Thurman green on the joinery,” explains Jono. The original floor plan was long and thin, which wasn’t conducive to family-friendly living. “By taking out a rear workshop area and knocking through, we were able to make this room a much grander size.”
LEFT Blocking an unnecessary doorway to the garage freed up an entire wall for elegant media-centre cabinetry. It doesn’t steal all the attention, though. “By having seating facing each other, the room feels conversational,” explains Jono. “This way the focal point of the room isn’t just the TV, but the other people sharing the space with you.”

A large-scale painting makes a statement, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. “The artwork cost under $200 and was painted by me!” says Jono, who used leftover sample pots and joint compound filler to give texture. “If you need an oversized artwork, this is the way to go: it’s personal, easy to paint and a lot more affordable than buying original art,” he says.
Rear window
“This was all about bringing natural light in and taking advantage of the beautiful views,” says Jono, the mastermind behind the window seat. “A few cushions and you instantly have a relaxing reading nook.”
Open minded
A mix of cupboards and open shelves allows for seasonal updates. “Swap things around, bring some items out of storage and put others away,” says Jono. “You’d be amazed how this can refresh a room.”
“Involving children in handmade craft, like the little placemat lion and bear, encourages active minds and lets them contribute to decorating their own space,” says Jono
