KIDS’ ZONE

Colour and curves combine in this fun-filled children’s room

Child’s play

Setting out to prove that a kid’s room can be bursting with cheer without turning gaudy, Jono took a considered approach to the palette. “Pairing the deeper navy with accents of brass and golden tones gave the space a modern, elevated feel.” The walls are painted in Dulux Pre School, with Kaboodle Kitchen ‘Paint Your Own’ cabinetry and a wave-edged bulkhead (which conceals a projector screen, no less) in Dulux Blue Quarry. The final touch? “I took a big risk!” admits Jono. “It felt like the room was missing one final layer and by putting wallpaper on the ceiling, it draws the eye up, bringing visual interest all the way from the floor to overhead.”

Marvel arch

The original arched doorways of the house were retained where possible, creating a sense of cohesiveness throughout the home.

“If your room’s on the compact side, consider installing sliding doors,” suggests builder Tim.

Teen Retreat

Pretty pastels and a colourful corkboard transform this space into a teenage dream

Surface appeal

When it came time to design this teenager’s sanctuary, adaptability was a key consideration, and luckily the ‘bones’ of the room were ideal. “During renovations, the fewer walls you move around, the more affordable it will be. With this room, Jono was happy to leave the layout pretty much as it was,” says builder Tim. Jono chose an on-trend, 1990s-inspired colour scheme. “Accents of soft yellows, purples and greens all help create a bright and vibrant palette, but this is easily a space that can be repainted with a more subtle palette, depending on how tastes change,” he says.

Study in style

Under-bench storage drawers were swapped out for a DIY floating desk under the arch (see opposite), and Jono handcrafted a patterned feature. “Using cork floor tiles, I painted every other tile in the purple tone to give a great checkerboard effect. I glued these to the wall and they now act as a pinboard behind the desk.”

A light touch

The size of this window was reduced to improve privacy in this street-facing room. “It still allows light into the space, and makes the room feel more intimate,” says Jono. Sheer curtains were installed to filter the natural light as well as add extra privacy, with roller blinds providing blockout.

Up the wall

Scalloped panelling painted in Dulux Unbleached Calico Half introduces depth and texture to the design. “With such a small space, adding interest to the walls is a great way to make the most of it, creating little details without encroaching on the floor space,” says Jono. Dulux Cuddle Half from cornice to dado adds pleasing contrast.
