How to build a hallway organiser
Sort your entranceway with a stylish solution to hold hats, bags, keys and more. Here’s how to make it with a little weekend time and tools from Ryobi
STEP
1: MEASURE AND CUT BACKING BOARD
First, decide how long your organiser should be, depending on your wall space and organisational needs. Grab a piece of timber and your Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP™ brushless circular saw. Measure up, then cut the back piece of the organiser to size.
STEP
2: MAKE CURVED ENDS
Next, using a curved edge, like a bowl, mark out matching curves at each end of the backing board and cut them using the Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP™ brushless jigsaw Tip: Smooth the edges with a Ryobi 18V ONE+ random orbital sander
STEP 3: CUT AND SAND SHELF
Use a square ruler to mark where each arch starts on both ends – the distance between these points is the length of shelf you’ll need to cut. With this measurement, mark another piece of timber and cut in a straight line on each end. Sand it to finish.
STEP 4: ATTACH SHELF
Measure the width of your backing board and divide in two, then draw a line down the centre. Place the shelf over this line and pencil-mark the top and bottom of the shelf on the backing board. Now measure 9mm down from the top line and pre-drill holes through the backing. Apply PVA to the shelf edge and screw it to the backing using 10G 75mm timber screws.
STEP 5: MARK HOOK SPACING AND PRE-DRILL
Decide how many dowel hooks you need and the spacing between them. Mark where they’ll go and pre-drill 4mm holes in the backing board. Draw a straight line before you drill to ensure they’re in line.
STEP 6: MEASURE AND CUT DOWELS
To work out the length of the dowels, measure the width of the shelf, then halve it. Cut the dowels to size using a drop saw. Pre-drill, glue and screw the dowels into place on the backing board.
STEP 7: INSTALL METAL HOOKS
Mark where you want the metal hooks to go, again, drawing a line to ensure they’re straight. Leave enough room between each for the items you’ll hang.
STEP 8: PREPARE FRENCH CLEAT
To hang your organiser flush with the wall, you’ll need a French cleat. Take an 85mm x 19mm piece of hardwood and cut a mitre down the middle using the Ryobi 18V ONE+ mitre saw. These two pieces will form the French cleat. Cut them 200mm shorter than your backing board, so they’re neatly tucked away.
STEP 9: SCREW IN FRENCH CLEAT
Screw one piece of the cleat onto the back of the organiser with the mitre facing inwards and down. You’re almost ready to hang it.
STEP 10: HANG IT
Find the studs in your wall using the Ryobi stud finder with AC detection and mark the height for your organiser. Allowing for the distance between the top of the organiser and the bottom of the cleat, draw a line on the wall where the other half of the cleat will go. Use a spirit level to ensure a straight line. Finally, screw the wall cleat into the studs and check the screws aren’t sticking out. Hang the organiser and admire your handiwork.
