Welcome

A word from our editor There’s something about the beginning of the year that makes us want our homes to be more organised, and whatever the interior planning problem, the answer is nearly always storage! It’s amazing how much you can squeeze into even the smallest space if you think outside the box a little.

Hop onto YouTube and have a look at Bunnings’ brilliant Make It Yours series where, among the eye-popping makeovers and budget-friendly upcycling ideas, you’ll find organisation expert Steph Pase’s clever ways to store all sorts of things. Steph, of @justanothermummyblog, tackled the wardrobe, pantry, linen cupboard and laundry – all space-challenged zones – with a host of amazing ideas. Check them out from page 43. Of course, if you’d rather just relax, our bach-influenced story will hopefully inspire a chilled update of your outdoor zone (see page 11). And this is also a great time to press the launch button on some quick DIY projects, such as painting and wallpapering (see page 57). Enjoy the issue!

Take cover!

Shield yourself from the hot summer sun wherever you go, from backyard to beach, with a cheery palm-patterned umbrella.

Brush up

If you’re tackling a paint project, consider this! Its one-coat formulation makes it easy to reinvent furniture or decorative objects.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Stuck on you For all those niggly DIY jobs, skip the screws and get them done in a jiffy with Selleys Hold Up ™ adhesive

S

helves to hang? Towel racks to mount? Now you can work smarter, not harder with Selleys Hold Up adhesive. It simply sticks to almost anything, without screws or clamps*, so is perfect for drill-avoiding DIYers. Plus, it comes in an easy-squeeze tube – no caulking gun required!

Shelving shortcut Beautifully styled storage is an easy shortcut to a polished interior, but first you need to hang your shelves. Selleys Hold Up makes the job so much easier – and, unlike traditional screw-in methods, where you drill and pray you’ve got it right, Selleys Hold Up is adjustable for up to 15 minutes, so you can get everything perfectly level, every time.

Spice of life Reorganise your pantry without pulling out the power drill with Selleys Hold Up. Putting up a spice rack, small shelf, or noticeboard can be done in minutes, restoring order to your cluttered pantry with no fuss or mess.

Potted colour Vertical gardens and wall-mounted planters are a gorgeous way to add life to a sterile exterior wall. Now it’s even easier to make this on-trend look your own. Selleys Hold Up is UV- and water-resistant, making it suitable for exterior use, and a fantastic solution to the task.

Clutter buster Entryway mess getting you down? A coat rack is an ideal solution, and Selleys Hold Up is the easiest way to get it mounted, as it adheres to painted walls. Make sure you clean the surface and that you sand back the wall to remove any loose or peeling paint before adhering.

Towel tricks Hooks and hangers are the finishing touches of a beautiful bathroom, but drilling into tiles is tricky – there’s nothing worse than cracking a tile in your newly renovated space. Selleys Hold Up adheres to tiles and is water-resistant, making it a dream solution for jobs in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry.

Lock it in A key safe is an ideal solution for short-stay rentals or visiting guests, but attaching one outdoors can be a pain. Tick off the job in minutes with Selleys Hold Up. It sticks to brick, render, timber or concrete, so you can select the secure location of your choice, apply the glue, stick and go!

For heavy objects, overhead applications and non-porous materials, such as glass and metals, it is recommended that additional supports (e.g. clamps) are used during cure as a precaution. Plan it Keeping finances on track

Beating reno budget blowouts

A payment schedule should be drawn up with your builder to track what is to be paid out when work is complete

Your budgeting skills are just as vital as your DIY knowledge when it comes to renovation

R

enovating can be satisfying, but it can also be a costly exercise. To avoid a budget blowout, you need to be well-organised and practical.

Doing the sums Website buildingguide.co.nz has useful information on estimated cost, and states a budget of around $1,800-$2,500

per square metre for a standard new-build home, or a simple renovation. However, renovation company general manager Russell Clark (licensedrenovations.co.nz), says costs are as individual as the renovation and suggests not taking any figures as gospel. “There are always complexities and variations involved, so it’s never cut and dried,” he says. “Getting early stage estimates from a builder during the design process will help you to see if you’re on the right track, budget-wise, because architects and designers don’t always see pitfalls or problems that we might pick up.” Keeping track Once you have your budget in place, and the bank has approved your finances, a spreadsheet to track all expenses is a godsend. To keep a tight rein on costs, try to get a fixed price from your contractor, always factoring in at least 10 per cent as a contingency fund if things don’t go to plan. Expect the unexpected Older houses can hold some expensive surprises. Asbestos, for example, or

Remember to factor in potential alternative housing for you and your pets. And don’t forget insurance, which can be up to twice as much as your regular annual house premium bunnings.co.nz

|

bunningsnz |

bunningsau

uneven foundations, can substantially add to your costs. If you’re going up a storey or excavating a basement, there can be unwelcome shocks, too. “When adding another storey on top you will be surprised as to how much of the existing structure needs to be altered to allow for bracing elements, and if you hit rock in a basement conversion, there’ll be more engineering fees,” says Russell. So many choices Separate your wants and needs when planning the look and style of your project. Big alterations to original plans can be costly, so keep your initial goal in mind. You can often save money by shopping around for your own materials, but make sure they arrive when specified, as idle tradespeople cost money. Auckland interior designer Susan Templer (templerinteriors.co.nz), says less expensive products can still achieve the same results. “It doesn’t matter what building materials we’re talking about, there’s almost always a good, cheaper alternative. I’ve had clients save $300 on bathroom tapware by showing them that traditional polished chrome still looks amazing, while fashionable tapware in other metals, such as brass, bronze and copper, that’s currently on the market, is significantly more expensive,” she says.¿

Words Louise Richardson. Photography Getty Images The information in this article is general information only and should not be your only source of information. We recommend you seek professional advice as appropriate. Bunnings disclaims any liability arising from the use of the information.

Who’s the boss? If you want to manage the project yourself, and on budget, you have to get very specific. You’ll need an airtight plan around who does what and when. Timings to consider include when final design plans will be delivered, applying for consents, finding tradespeople who’ll provide a detailed breakdown of labour, plus other trade costs, materials, and fixtures and fittings. You’ll also need to consider details such as portable loos, rubbish skips and general health and safety issues, such as taking precautions against injury for tradespeople working on roofs. Using a professional renovation company, with its team of experts (architectural designers, a quantity surveyor, a consents specialist and tradespeople), will lessen stress and help keep your budget on track. But for their expertise, they will be taking a mark-up.

ven if you’ve never heard of architecture’s latest big trend, it’s likely you already understand it. Biophilia refers to an innate love of life (or living systems), meaning that humans are biologically wired for nature worship. It tells us why crackling fires draw us closer, explains the way tumbling waves clear the head and why we get our best ideas while gardening. The answers are simple and sensory, but as modern life continues to urbanise and our cities become denser, we need to look to our built environment to restore the balance. Nature lover “Biophilia is the love of ‘life’. Design is a conscious and deliberate act of human creation. Together they are a practice that aims to imbue our homes, neighbourhoods, towns and cities with deep beauty and the conditions for health and wellbeing,” says Caroline Robinson, Living Future NZ Rākeiora team member. The evidence is in that a strong humannature connection is good for our health, so the goal should be to bring this relationship into our homes and workplaces. “By connecting us with nature, we believe biophilic design can reduce stress, improve wellbeing, help us think clearer and even assist with self-healing,” says Dr Phillip Roös, director of the Live+Smart Research Lab at Deakin University (Australia). In our homes, it’s about welcoming the outdoors into everyday life. “Our environment and surroundings play a huge role in the way we interact in a space and also how we connect,” says Davina Harper, colour specialist at Dulux – biophilic design was a key influence for the paint brand’s 2020 style forecast. Changes can be grand, such as sunlight-filled extensions wrapped around trees, or as small as a new house plant. “You can bring beauty, health and wellbeing into your home no matter what the scale or budget,” says Caroline. Read on for seven ways to capture the serenity in your own home. }

Seven natural wonders to embrace at home

Natural greenery is the calling card of biophilic design, hanging from the ceiling and standing proudly in corners. House plants are beautiful to look at and also remove known carcinogens such as benzene and formaldehyde from the air we breathe. “Incorporating plenty of botanical planting inside really helps connect us with nature,” says Davina. A benchtop garden brings herbs and veges within arm’s reach of the chopping board.

Earthy colour “Painting your space in a variety of greens is the perfect way to channel a sense of relaxation and bring colours from the New Zealand landscape into your home,” says Davina Harper. “Greens are not only thought to be relaxing but are also rejuvenating as well. A popular shade of green from the Dulux Colours of New Zealand range is Dulux Ohai Half – a soft natural grey-green that works well in Kiwi homes.”

Sunshine

In 2014, an American university study found exposure to daylight, particularly in the morning, to benefit sleep, mood, alertness and metabolism. If you’re renovating, think about orientation – the more north-facing windows, the better for winter sun and a lack of blazing summer heat. Skylights and solar skylight alternatives will lift mood and vitamin D levels in landlocked spaces (we love a light well over a shower). Reflect and maximise light with strategically placed mirrors.

Organic materials and forms Timber and stone bring earth tones and textures into living environments, especially when finished without a high shine to let the grains and variations come through. These materials look beautiful across floors, kitchen islands and benchtops and furniture. The trick is to embrace the patina of age, the scratches and marks that build over time. Similarly, because the natural world isn’t big on straight lines, curves help to bring biophilia into the home. They’re ergonomic and easy on the eye, so look to furniture and fittings with rounded edges.

Low-tech zones

If Caroline Robinson could make one change to increase the biophilic qualities of our homes, it would be a reduction in screen time. “Being deliberate about how and when we use our digital technology is crucial to our wellbeing. One way to do this is to allocate stretches of time when all devices and wi-fi in the home are turned off,” she says. You could even – ironically – enlist technology to help, with a smart home hub like Google Home or Amazon Echo; instruct the voice assistant to turn off the TV at a set time as a first step to freeing the family from screens. }

Sights and sounds

A view really is good for what ails you, but if yours are nothing to write home about – a solid wall or ugly fence – create your own tranquil outlook with climbing plants or a vertical garden. Soundscapes are also vital. Researchers found listening to natural sounds physically alters the connections in our brains, reducing our body’s fight-or-flight instinct, whereas human-made sounds put us in an anxious state. Of course, not every home has access to a babbling brook or rustling forest, so create your own living view with water features, fire pits and bird feeders.

Ventilation For good cross-ventilation, you need air sweeping through a space in a straight line from one opening to the next. For this, openings need to be opposite each other and less than 12 metres apart. A window, door or ventilation grille will do the job, though louvres are particularly good at drawing in a breeze. ¿

Pools, ponds and other water features positioned close to buildings can help to cool the air around your home

Beat the heat

Keep your cool Stay chilled this summer using eco-friendly design ideas that harness shade and natural breezes

P

revention is better than cure. With passive cooling strategies, you can keep your home from heating up too much in the first place, which will mean less reliance on devices such as fans and air conditioners, lightening the load on both your hip pocket and the environment. It’s all about working smarter, not harder.

Watch your windows Wanaka-based architectural designer and energy modeller Jessica Eyers (hiberna.co.nz) says windows are a weak point in a building’s fabric when it comes to overheating; most heat entering a home does so through the windows – solar radiation and hot air coming in when the window is open, or via leaks. “In normal clear glazing, solar infrared radiation (and visible light and some of the UV) is transmitted through the glass panes. Upon hitting surfaces in the room, this becomes long-wave infrared radiation (heat),” explains Jessica. “Simply put, once the heat is in your house, it is hard to get rid of it. “Reducing air leaks (improving airtightness) allows you to keep the hot air out when you want to. It might make more sense to keep the windows shut during the hottest part of the day.” bunnings.co.nz

Blind ambition Cellular blinds have a heat-reflecting interior lining, and provide excellent insulation by trapping air inside their honeycomb structure. Hanging curtains can also help stop the heat coming in but, unlike other window treatments, such as Venetian blinds, they’re harder to adjust for partial shading only. Applying tinted window film with a reflective finish is another option for staying comfy inside. It can block up to 98 per cent of ultraviolet rays and 89 per cent of heat transmitted as infra-red radiation. Look outside the house, as well as inside, for cooling solutions. Outdoor blinds not only shade your deck, but can effectively prevent heat and light from reaching a window or wall. Folding-arm awnings and wall-mounted umbrellas are similarly

“If you’re designing a house, avoid too much west glazing or, in a retrofit situation, add shading such as shade sails, planting, screens and shutters to westfacing windows” Jessica Eyers Hiberna

What is passive cooling? Passive cooling is all about strategically using shade, reflective surfaces and natural airflow to keep your home comfortable. Most of the really big decisions about passive cooling take place during the design stage, involving your home’s orientation and layout, and clever positioning of windows and ventilation products. Even choosing light-coloured exterior finishes, especially on the roof, can reflect a great deal of heat. For those making changes to existing homes, the principles of passive cooling could guide your choice of finish or window position. By the same token, if it’s time to repaint your weatherboards, choose a pale tone over a dark one. Adding a prefabricated pergola kit in the right location can significantly reduce the amount of wall area exposed to direct sunlight.

27 Open windows and doors in the late afternoon to allow cooler air to flow through the home

Fan tales

Even the best passive strategies can use some help from mechanical cooling on the hottest days. In humid areas, an efficient reverse-cycle air conditioner is your best bet, but this is also the most power-hungry option. To strike a balance between comfortable cooling and minimum energy use, set it to 23°C. “A standard air conditioner will consume about 3000-5000W on average,” says Jason Neophytou, HPM lifestyle expert. “To cool your home quickly, turn on the air conditioning and ceiling fans at the same time. This rapidly distributes cold air, allowing you to turn off the air conditioning sooner and let the fans do the rest.”

brilliant at providing shade when you need it, and fold away easily when you don’t. For a more permanent solution, a shade sail can also block sunlight from a considerable section of wall. Pool of talent Evaporating water from an uncovered pool, pond or water feature does lower the temperature of nearby air. Fountains and waterfalls speed up evaporation, chilling the air even more. Positioning a water feature near a window or door creates a zone of colder air that can easily flow inside. A pond in a shaded area near the window of a living space can also harness the power of convection for passive cooling; this means that, as warm air rises and escapes through windows in the upper areas of the house, cool air spills in to take its place. Just bear in mind that with any body of water, you’ll need to abide by local safety regulations.

Go with the flow As the heat of the day fades, open the windows to let the air through. Even a relatively gentle breeze can increase comfort, with a similar cooling effect to reducing the temperature by 3°C, as long as the air is not too humid (50 per cent or less).* Plantation shutters let you make the most of such airflow while still blocking sunlight. Stuart Hall, brand and digital marketing manager for EasyAS Shutters, says, “You can open the blades of EasyAS plantation shutters at any angle. This allows breezes to pass through while deflecting radiant heat and UV rays at the same time.” For best effect, be aware of the prevailing wind and open windows on that side of the house. Also, to harness the benefits of convection cooling, consider how air moves; warm air rises and cool air falls, so allow hot air to escape through higher windows, skylights and roof vents. ¿

Teal appeal If your heart sings when surrounded by soothing shades of blue and green, teal may just be the hue your home has been waiting for

O

nce the cornerstone of 80s interiors, teal has shrugged off its retro past to emerge as one of the trending colours for 2020 and beyond. No longer bright and garish, teal has deepened into a richer, darker hue that serves to anchor warm timber tones, offset metallic touches and add depth to accents of soft pinks and peach. “There’s a lightness and fluidity to these ocean tones that speaks of creativity and adventure,” says Davina Harper, design and colour specialist for Dulux. “It’s the ideal backdrop to combine furniture from different eras – from mid-century through to the 80s – in elegant and refined shapes.”

Why we love it A fusion of mid- to deep-toned green and blue, teal combines the balance and calm of blue with the optimism and healing properties of green. “Reminiscent of tropical and seaside escapes, teal evokes a sense of rejuvenation and relaxation, and has a calming effect,” says Rachel Lacy, colour category manager for PPG.

Teal traverses a spectrum of tones, from soft, aqueous hues and pale blue-grey shades through to deep, dark teals evocative of the bottom of the ocean. “Teal is made by mixing blue into a green base. Pale restful teals have more grey added to soften the colour while brighter teals have yellow added which adds vibrancy,” says interior designer Becky Lee (beckyleeinteriors.co.nz). “Teal, cyan and turquoise are easily confused members of the blue/green family, but teal is deeper, less saturated and more mature than more lively mid-toned cyan and turquoise.”

Create a space to relax and unwind with PPG Teal Vortex (back wall)

Sea change Blue greens cleverly complement varying architectural styles, making teal equally at home in both elegant period-style homes and modern interiors. “Brighter shades are more uplifting and suit higher energy spaces in your home – like kids’ bedrooms, kitchens and family rooms,” says Becky. 

Update it

“Depending on the tone or shade you use and what you pair it with, teal can feel playful and light-hearted, or calm and sophisticated” Becky Lee interior designer

“Pale, greyed off versions of teal are lovely in spaces where you want to feel restful and calm – like bedrooms, sophisticated bathrooms and cosy lounges.” Teal also works really well in seaside homes, paired with fresh white. “It instantly links the home to the ocean with its teal tones in the water and whitecaps on the waves,” says Becky Lee. What to consider Before you choose a hue, think about the purpose of the space and the atmosphere you want to emulate there. “Because teal is made from combining green and blue, you get to enjoy the qualities of both of these colours,” says Becky. “The blue component gives calming qualities while the green speaks of renewal and freshness.”

For a softer teal, try Dulux Pt Chevalier, Mt Victoria or Manu Bay, which can be used on one or two walls, or inside a nook. Make waves A rich, intense hue, teal inherently draws the eye, making it an ideal colour choice for an accent wall or to highlight an architectural feature. “Teal is the ideal accent colour,” confirms Kelly Magee, colour expert at British Paints. “For a show-stopping feature wall, go for an intense teal like British Paints Riverland Blue or Tempted Turquoise,” she says. “Softer tones like Water Flow and Aqua Motion can be used in bedrooms or living spaces to create a sense of calm.” Teal can also be added to a neutral space in small quantities through cushions, throws and other ornamental objects.

The right white If you’re pairing teal with white, be careful to check your undertones, Kelly warns. “Teals tend to work best with colours that have a similar undertone, so look for cool, crisp white with blue or green undertones,” she says. “Deep, dark shades of teal pair beautifully with neutral whites like British Paints Love Note, while softer teals work best with cool whites like Infinity White.” As always, trying out hues with sample pots is your best bet for fine-tuning the perfect colour selection for your space. ◆

Perfect pairing Teal sits opposite coral on the colour wheel, so it’s hardly surprising this rich hue looks wonderful when paired with pinks, oranges, golds and soft, blond timbers. “It also teams well with most neutrals, natural wood, and is especially sexy with metallics, in particular gold and bronze. For those who like a more playful interior space, the brighter teal tones zing with jewel tones like hot pink, red and amethyst,” says Becky. “And for those ocean-inspired palettes, team teal with aquamarine, muted greyed-off blues and whites. Add some natural fibres like jute and cane to complete the look.” If you love the look of yellow and teal, Davina Harper recommends choosing a gold or ginger tone over a straight or vibrant yellow, which will fade the teal and make it look washed out. If you can, avoid pairing teal with bright, clean primary colours. “Teal tends to lose its warmth and elegance when paired with these,” explains Rachel Lacy.

Update it green. “Use dry river beds, corten steel steps with pebbles, sculptures and modern features,” suggests Thelma. If your design uses impermeable materials like concrete, design it so surface water is directed straight to your plants; bear in mind, though, that porous options are more suitable for dry gardens. Choose plants that have a low water requirement rather than simply being drought-tolerant. Many drought-tolerant plants are bred to survive low-water conditions for short periods of time, but that doesn’t mean they will thrive or look good. Start with young plants, which are better able to grow and adapt to their current situation than mature plants, and group plants with similar water requirements together. Known as hydrozoning, it’s an excellent way to conserve water. When planting, break up the soil around the planting hole to make it easier for the roots to go deeper. If watering is necessary, water deeply about once a week to encourage roots to dig deeper in search of moisture. Shallow watering (little and often) results in a shallow root system that dries out quickly. Mulch! Mulching aids water retention and keeps the soil and roots cool. “A layer of leaves, seaweed, straw, compost, bark or gravel works well,” says Thelma. Always remember to water the soil first and if using mulching bark aim to replace it every three years. A drip irrigation system can be set up for summer use for controlled and efficient watering. “You can always switch it off in the rainy season,” suggests Thelma.¿

New look

The Bunnings Make It Yours video series has wrapped up with more amazing makeovers

F Words Shelley Tustin. Photography Anna Robinson. Paint colours may vary on application. *Makeover prices are in Australian dollars

rom the stunning first impression delivered by a high-impact exterior, to the finer details of an organised pantry and linen cupboard, the Make It Yours series has successfully turned a bland canvas into a desirable home. The last reveals have delivered nice-to-have (but actually life-changing) rooms – including a fabulous laundry, great storage and a multi-purpose home office – as well as a sparkling front yard.

Top: For garage door, try Dulux ‘Duramax’ spray paint in Southern Alps. Driveway in Berger ‘Jet Dry’ heavy duty paving paint in Deep Charcoal, $135/4L, I/N: 01410007. Right centre: Boundary wall in Dulux paint in Colorsteel Ironsand. For similar screens, try Outdeco ‘Star Anais’ 1200mm x 600mm screen panels, $99 each, I/N: 00314670. Right: Convolvulus plants. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Dale Vine

FRONT YA R D Landscaper Dale Vine (@vineyd) is well able to tackle complicated jobs, but he loved the potential to transform this house with only DIY-level skills. “It was a pretty typical suburban front yard, which was good, because we could show the things you can do in that sort of space by yourself,” he says. Paint was the major tool used here; the red brick gained a new look with Dulux Spirits Bay, while the front door got a bold hit with PPG Mermaid Tail.

Green thumb A weeping cherry softens the front, and existing boundary trees were trimmed to tidy and lift the foliage off the ground, “which makes the space feel bigger,” says Dale. A boundary wall (above) was given life with star jasmine planted against weathering steel screens. “It takes a while for creepers to grow up, so for instant impact, the screens make it look good from day one,” says Dale. 

Keira Rumble

HOME OFFICE The smallest bedroom of the house was ripe for renovation into a home office, a project tackled by wellbeing expert Keira Rumble (@krumble). Keira had three goals going into this room: to infuse the space with the earthy, natural tones she loves; to utilise Bunnings’ range of storage and useful tech to create an organised work zone; and, most importantly, to deliver a multi-purpose room that could be used for working, relaxing or converting back into a bedroom. A rattan shelf unit found on Facebook Marketplace adds a cosy textural element.

1 For similar screen, try Outdeco ‘Star Anais’ 1200mm x 600mm screen in Brown, $99, I/N: 00314670 2 (on middle shelf) Freckleface plant. 3 Mother-in-law’s tongue plant. Zanzibar Gem plant. 4 Brilliant ‘Harbour’ DIY plug-in rattan pendant, $165, I/N: 00089054. Windoware ‘Admire’ 210-300cm expanding curtain rod in Black, $69.90, I/N: 08903935. All other products, stylist’s own. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Be creative and try hanging a screen panel to make a piece of art

Chill out zone A second-hand sofa bed – found on Facebook Marketplace – makes the room multifunctional as a potential guest bedroom. With the serene green walls in PPG Mesa Verde and a weathering steel garden screen as rustic art (backlit by LED strips), the space is also designed as a peaceful spot to relax. “The light is a smart bulb, so it can be adjusted. I meditate quite a bit, so it’s useful to be able to dim it down and go into meditation mode,” Keira says. Indoor plants help to improve air quality and reduce stress – plus they look great!

Window wow The big window with its backyard outlook is a great asset for this room. Sheer curtains help diffuse the light. “Those sheers are also a really good hack. We put two on each side to make it thicker and more voluminous,” explains Keira.

39 Existing white shelves provide handy storage and contrast against a strong background colour

Office nook The original wardrobe has been cleverly transformed into a functional workspace. Newly installed bi-fold doors reveal an invigorating pop of terracotta paint over textured wallpaper, with a beech panel desktop and customised three-drawer cabinet. “As soon as we changed the handles, it looked like a completely different piece!” says Keira. Best of all, it’s flexible – the overhead shelf was retained and the desk is freestanding, so the space can be easily converted back to a wardrobe. 

Steph Pase

CUPBOARD LOVE Organisation expert Steph Pase (@justanother mummyblog) tackled the storage-heavy elements of the house, revamping the wardrobe, linen cupboard, kitchen pantry and laundry. Flexi Storage shelving systems revitalised the wardrobe layout and linen cupboard. Racks, rails, shelves and drawers anticipate a family’s common storage dilemmas, including items “you often struggle to find a place for,” says Steph. An accessory rack holds smaller items.

STEPH’S TIP

Before

“Decant your dry goods into labelled jars – it’s a lot neater – and place bigger packets into baskets. It helps to put all your food groups together and figure out the best storage from there”

Pantry perfection “An organised pantry makes you feel like your whole life is together!” says Steph. The pantry shelves were refreshed and reorganised with baskets, fruit crates and jars neatly labelled with chalkboard tape, while the back of the door received its own mini makeover (see page 44).

Well laundered Steph says the aim in the laundry was to maximise storage and functionality. “The drying rack – made from a curtain rail – and the benchtop over the washing machine are designed to make life a bit easier for whoever lives here,” she says. She also managed to make the space look appealing on a budget, with a fresh palette of white, timber and black accents, and a clever splashback of wood-look vinyl planks instead of tiles! ◆ Before

“For a streamlined look, store your printer in a nearby drawer or a cupboard,” says Natalie Jane, professional organiser

Few of us do well in an unorganised office, so storage here is key. Professional organiser Natalie Jane (beorganised.co.nz) suggests keeping things you use every day within arm’s reach, then storing your archive documents in another space – for example, the garage or spare bedroom.

44

Update it RACK ’N’ ROLL Keep herbs and spices in plain view and in easy reach with a rack.

Entry way

Prevent your hall from becoming a dumping ground by adding a simple unit and coat rack. Hide away everyday essentials in baskets to keep clutter to a minimum.

LABEL MATES Identify pantry items clearly by labelling jars and tins. “Use clear containers so you can easily identify what’s inside,” says Hayley.

CHALK IT UP Keep chalkboard chalk and pens to hand. Try LTW Storage System sundry handy baskets, $5.49 each/ small, I/N: 00558618

TOP TIP When the pantry is bulging, use inserts to create more space and improve visibility. Options include utensil trays, spice racks, pot lid organisers and hooks and holders for the inside of the doors

CRATE IDEA Restore order to the bottom rows of the pantry with crates or baskets. “These are great if you are short on drawers. You can pull them out for the same effect and store like items together,” says interior designer Hayley Dryland (augustdesign.co.nz).

HANDLE IT Store weighty items in sturdy baskets. All Set 25cm x 25cm x 17cm mesh storage baskets with wooden handle in White, $14.98 each, I/N: 00122274

Pantry

“The back of the pantry door is space that people forget about, so we put up Practa racks and made a chalkboard, which can be like a family command station, so you can organise your week ahead,” says organisation expert Steph Pase, who transformed this pantry as part of the Make It Yours series (see page 37). bunnings.co.nz

Laundry

Expert Steph Pase also lent her organisational skills to the laundry in the Make It Yours house, using the room’s height to make the best use of the limited area. Within the cupboard, Steph maximised space with handy hooks. “We put in removable hooks for the brooms to hang off, which keeps them off the bottom of the cupboard and you can store more stuff underneath,” she says. A bench creates a space to sort clothes, while a drying rack helps to keep dryer use to a minimum.

OFF THE RAILS A curtain rod makes an excellent drying rack. Try Windoware 19mm x 2m wrought iron curtain rod in Black, $19.86, I/N: 00184910

BRIGHT WHITES Ventilated stacking baskets are a good pick for damp laundries.

Ezy Storage ‘Brickor’ large stacking baskets, $17.98 each, I/N: 02583812

PRO TIP BENCHTOP Seal the sides of your board with oil, wax or lacquer before use.

When space is tight, a front-loading washing machine will create more room, giving you a handy benchtop space above

Try SpecRite 1200mm x 300mm x 18mm brown acacia oiled panel, $28, I/N: 08330174

Wardrobe

A standard single-rail wardrobe doesn’t make the best use of space, so Steph Pase used clever ideas to transform the master robe in the Make It Yours house (overleaf). Flexi Storage solutions utilise all areas from floor to ceiling. Save space by embracing seasonal storage. “Plastic containers to house vacuumpacked bags are perfect for storing away winter or summer clothes,” says interior designer Hayley. “Don’t forget to place a freshener inside to stop them smelling stale.” Also, “Think double height, where you can get two layers of hanging plus storage above for your shoe boxes, or non-everyday-use items.”

NEAT AND TIDY Store cleaning cloths in door-hung baskets.

Be smart when planning your wardrobe. Allocate boxed out-of-season items to a hardto-reach top shelf. Allow at least four shelves and four drawers for smalls and clothing that can be folded, plus at least one section for long-hanging clothes and two sections for short-hanging clothes.

“If there’s no room for drawers, use baskets. They’re great for gym gear or T-shirts, and will keep things tidy,” says Hayley Dryland.

S

ummer is a great time to refresh your place by painting, or to create a feature wall using wallpaper. The days are long, and the extended periods of light let you get lots done. But this also means you need to be organised, so ensure you have all your equipment ready to go. Prep school The foundation of any painting or decorating job is taking the time to set the scene properly. If you’re painting a room, remove as much furniture as you can and cover the rest; using a canvas drop sheet for the floor avoids the slip hazard of wet paint on a plastic surface. Shield light switches, skirting and other fixtures using quality masking tape.

Words Gun Arvidssen

Roller derby Mix the paint thoroughly using a handheld mixing paddle; for larger quantities, a drill mixer attachment will speed up the process. Minimise mess by attaching a pouring spout to the appropriate-sized can, and use disposable tray liners that fit into a roller tray to make clean-up a breeze. Cut in around the edges of doors and wall trim using a 50mm cutting-in brush (see box), then hit the main expanses of the walls with a roller. The ‘nap’ of a roller cover refers to the height of the fabric. “A nap length of 4mm to 6mm will give you a smooth, flat finish,” says Paul Yaxley, marketing manager at Haydn. “Microfibre rollers are a staple for trade painters and will outperform polyester rollers – from providing a superior finish, to better coverage and greater durability.” Paper paradise Create a feature wall or transform the look of a bedroom by hanging modern wallpaper, available in an eye-popping range of patterns. If you need to replace the previous layer, save yourself a world of hassle by using a wallpaper steamer. Once the paper starts to loosen, follow with a sturdy scraper to peel away the old layer. To hang new paper, mix the paste according to instructions, pour into a roller tray then apply to the wall with a roller. Align the end of the first drop with the top of the wall and stick it onto the paste, then smooth it down and eliminate air pockets using a wallpaper smoother.

PRO TIP “The rougher the surface, the longer the nap length you’ll need”

1

Paul Yaxley Haydn

Outside chance Good on you for getting around to the annual deck spruce-up! Make the job of refinishing as painless as possible with a specialised applicator, like the Haydn 230mm Deck and Stain paint pad. “This one’s great for smooth to semi-rough surfaces,” says Paul. “It’s suitable for all paints, stains and sealers on timber and the handle is adjustable to reach any angle and can be locked into place for secure edging by tightening the base.” Painting or refinishing pergola beams and overhead components can be a headache, but extension poles will make a difference. “It pays to have a selection of Haydn extension poles on hand,” says Paul. “This enables extension from just 0.4m right up to 3.2m and saves a whole lot of ladder time.” Diamonds in the rough For fences, brickwork and other rough outdoor surfaces, use a roller with a long-nap cover. A paint sprayer is another good tool for covering large and uneven areas, or for refinishing fretwork, wroughtiron furniture and similar intricately detailed items. If you’re using a sprayer outdoors, choose a day when the air is still, wear a painter’s respirator for safety, and goggles to protect your eyes. Don a set of disposable hooded coveralls, or you’ll be picking tiny flecks of paint out of your hair and clothing for weeks! ¿

Which brush? It’s crucial to choose the right paintbrush based on what you need to paint; trying to use a 75mm or 100mm brush on fine details simply won’t give you the precision you need. “Monarch’s range of woodcare brushes are specifically designed for applying products such as stains, varnishes or polyurethanes,” says Mark O’Connor, Monarch brand ambassador. “They can be used for both oil-based and water-based products, interior or exterior application, and come in four convenient sizes.” For cutting in around doors and windows, Mark recommends the 50mm moulding and skirting brush. “This brush is made with premiumquality synthetic filament, and has an angled edge for more precision and control,” he explains. “For outdoor areas, you need products that are tough enough to apply paint without falling apart,” Mark advises. “I use a Monarch exterior and rough surfaces brush, made of a strong durable filament designed to hold and apply a lot of paint to rough surfaces.” 1 Monarch 50mm synthetic moulding & skirting paintbrush, $20.61, I/N: 00503486. 2 Monarch 100mm exterior & rough surfaces paintbrush, $20.48, I/N: 00022586. 3 Monarch 38mm synthetic detail finish & ceiling paintbrush $15.46, I/N: 00503727. Fix it Garden irrigation

Irrigation helps to keep your plants from withering away, without wasting water

Sort out your watering woes

P

lants need water all year, but in the hotter, drier months it’s essential for keeping your garden healthy. Irrigation is the most cost-effective way to take the hassle out of watering. “It ensures plants continue to thrive, even when you go away and especially when you’re establishing a new garden,” says landscape designer Sandra Batley of Flourish Garden Concepts (flourishgardens. co.nz). “Even in areas with frequent rain, such as Auckland, it’s essential that new gardens get enough water.” Container gardens For pots and hanging baskets, drip irrigation works well. Emitters can be set up in each pot. Vertical gardens and

other uncommon garden set-ups also benefit from drip irrigation systems. For some, a gravity-fed drip system may be necessary. Specific kits are available for container and raised bed irrigation. What do you need? Typically, 19mm piping is used for lawns, 13mm for garden beds and 4mm for lines feeding off them, plus a tap-to-piping connector and clamps at each junction to make them watertight. Elbows and tees connect everything together, and saddle clamps secure piping to beds or the ground. An end stopper is needed and an automatic timer is handy. “Automating your irrigation system with an irrigation controller or tap timer is an ideal way to ensure your garden

gets the right amount of water,” says Ursula Christey from Parkland Products, Pope irrigation specialists. “Automatic timers mount straight to your garden tap and are set to water at specified times, saving homeowners both time and money.” Grey water hoses are also available for reusing laundry, bath and shower water in the garden. However, you’ll need to check with your local council before collecting and reusing this kind of water. Determine water flow first Before making a plan, calculate your water pressure to know how many sprinklers, pop-ups or drippers you’ll require.

System selection Most irrigation systems are easy to set up, and can be simple or sophisticated. You just need to know what’s available. “There are irrigation solutions for anywhere, any size – lawns, flower beds, vege patches, pots and hanging baskets – to ensure various zones of your property receive water in the right way and the right amount,” says Ursula. “Irrigation is very versatile on different terrains, from flat to sloping landscapes.”

If using a tap timer or pressure reducer, measure your flow with the device fitted.” Turn the tap on full, then place the bucket under the tap. Use a stopwatch to determine litres per minute (LPM) and calculate the flow rate: 60 ÷ (seconds it takes to fill the bucket) x (bucket size in litres) = flow rate (for a visual guide visit: parkland.co.nz/homeirrigationplan). This allows you to determine how many feeders and pop-ups you can use. The LPM for each nozzle is specified on the back of the packaging. Add up the numbers for each nozzle you use to ensure the tally is below the LPM flow rate of your tap. ◆

Drip irrigation Drip emitters are built in or attached to a feeder hose, and water comes out slow and steady, and at a precise flow. “Drip irrigation, such as the Pope Drip Eze, applies moisture directly to the desired plants and their root system,” says Ursula. “It reduces the risk of run-off and water wastage and is perfect for garden beds and vege gardens.” This system waters only growing plants, so that weeds can be avoided. It works well over large areas and uses less water than soaker hoses. Numerous connections can be added for more advanced systems.

Sprinkler systems Spray heads are set up on the ground and can turn a full circle or rotate to suit the garden. Pop-up sprinklers, as they sound, pop up and disappear when needed. For all these situations, water is dispersed widely and can cover a large area. It is convenient, and ideal for lawns as well as garden beds, but wind can blow water in the wrong direction and intense summer sun can cause it to evaporate before it hits the ground, so water can be easily wasted.

Soaker hoses These special porous hoses have thousands of tiny pores along their entire length where water seeps out slowly and evenly. They are laid directly on the ground and can be covered in mulch if desired. However, as water travels along the length of the hose, it loses pressure and flow, so they are best suited to smaller areas, or for intensely planted vege gardens. It’s difficult to tailor soaker hoses to the specific needs of individual plants, but this is perhaps the easiest irrigation system to set up.

Cavity doors Cavity doors slide into a wall, making them the ultimate space-saving option, compared with a hinged door, which needs space to swing open. Jackie recommends them for areas such as pantries and bathrooms. “They free up wall space, allowing for improved layout in small rooms,” she explains. Installation into an existing wall is labour intensive, as it requires the wall to be removed to fit the cavity. You’ll need to consult a structural engineer to check the wall is not load-bearing. You’ll also need to be sure there are no plumbing or electrical services running through the wall, as these must be rerouted by a licensed tradie. Cavity sliders can either retract fully into the wall (‘flush jamb’) or protrude slightly (‘flush pull’). Be sure to choose the right hardware – the flush jamb style, for example, will need a flush ring pull in the edge of the door. 1 Hume ‘Accent HAG9’ 1980mm x 660mm x 35mm interior door, $120, I/N: 00168141. 2 Hume ‘Accent HAG4’ 1980mm x 660mm x 35mm interior door, $120, I/N: 00168223. 3 Hume ‘Sorrento 5’ 1980mm x 660mm x 35mm interior door, $165, I/N: 00180805. 4 Hume Doors ‘Evolution’ 1980mm x 660mm x 90mm grooved jamb cavity slider, $252, I/N: 00213928. 5 Schlage round cavity slider privacy door lock in Matt Black, $53.90, I/N: 00135511. 6 Schlage round cavity slider door lock in Polished Chrome, $36.93, I/N: 00152087. 7 Schlage square cavity slider door lock in Matt Black, $38.90, I/N: 00135513. ot sure how to go about selecting the right door for your reno or building project? With an abundance of styles available, it can be tricky. The first thing to consider is what style of home you are creating – the right door should enhance the overall design. “Internal doors help to define spaces in a home, creating separation and seclusion where needed,” says interior designer Jackie Jones (jjid.co.nz). Knowing the basic door types is a great place to start. Here’s an overview to help make your decision making easier.

A panelled hinged door mirrors a panelled wall and adds character

Fix it Buyer’s guide to doors

Panel and flush shopping

Flush and panelled doors Also known as hinged doors, these are the common swinging doors we know so well. They’re usually referred to as ‘flush’ or ‘panelled’ – the former style have a plain (flush) profile that make a perfect fit for modern or minimalist homes, while the latter have detailed panels in an endless number of styles and are suited to traditional homes, or anywhere you want to add further character and interest. “Hinged doors are the most common and simplest doors to install,” says renovation consultant Mark Morrison (refresh.co.nz). “When you install them you want to consider the space needed from finished ground level – 30mm from carpet and 20mm from hard flooring is generally a good rule of thumb.”

Remember to check the size of your existing doorjamb and the direction the door will need to swing before you buy. The doors generally take standard universal passage set door hardware. All handles are interchangeable, making makeovers quick and painless. Mark also suggests using a diagram to make sure you order the correct left-hung or right-hung door.  PRO TIP Enlist a second person to help when installing heavy doors, and use a spirit level to check your door is level before securing the hinges

PRO TIP If you have small children or elderly relatives in the home, lever handles may be easier to work than knobs Get a handle on it Once you’ve chosen your doors, the next step is finding hardware. Quality hardware that is fit for purpose ensures a more professional and longer-lasting result. The doors and door furniture you choose – for example, knobs or levers, square backplates or round – should also reflect the design of the house. “Hardware is the finishing touch,” says Jackie, “like accessories are to a gorgeous dress.” Beautiful finishes, such as matt black, brushed brass, nickel or aged metal, can be carried through to other hardware elements, such as cabinetry handles and tapware, she adds. ◆ 1

Solid timber: Solid timber doors are 100 per cent natural wood. Though often reserved for exteriors for the timber’s beauty, strength and security, they also provide good heat and sound insulation and are great for indoors where soundproofing, security and/or privacy is required.

Solid core: These are engineered doors made from wood by-products. Good for heat and sound insulation too, they have similar uses to solid timber doors but tend to be less expensive, and are often stronger because of the high density of engineered wood used to make them.

Hollow core: Inexpensive and lighter compared with solid timber and solid core doors, these doors have a honeycombed centre within a solid outer frame, and a veneer surface. While hollow core doors are ideal for budget-conscious makeovers, they are generally not great sound insulators.

Make it Feature walls

PAINT ONE WALL AS A FEATURE

“Feature walls can be a quick fix for a bland space,” says Wellington interior designer Kerryn Dunshea (kerryndunshea.com). “Paint is a fast and cost-effective way to transform a wall, and you can make huge changes in just a weekend.” First, choose a solid wall with no doors or windows to distract the eye, or one that’s already a focal point, such as behind a bed. Ensure the wall is clean, and check for cracks and holes, patching any with a filler, such as GIB RediFilla Plasterboard Repair Compound. Use a darker colour, but one that complements existing walls and decor. If you aren’t confident, try using the same hue as the other walls, but a few shades deeper. Decorating tricks can help bring a room into proportion. For example, to shorten a long room, make the smaller wall at one end the feature to bring it closer. “I’m also a fan of art hung on a darker wall,” says Kerryn. “It punctuates the ground colour and provides a dramatic backdrop, especially with white or light frames.” 

HOW TO HANG PASTE-THE-WALL PAPER

1

Measure for your first drop Read the wallpaper instructions. Measure the width of the wallpaper, deduct 5cm and mark this distance from the corner of the wall. From this mark, use a spirit level and pencil to run a line from the top to the bottom of the wall to outline the edge of your wallpaper. Allow the wallpaper to overhang, so you can cut it cleanly in the corner.

2 HANG WALLPAPER

Hanging wallpaper can hide imperfections and it’s relatively simple, thanks to today’s ‘pastethe-wall’ products, like the Superfresco Easy range. But preparation is key. “You can’t wallpaper over a badly plastered wall and hope for the best,” says Kerryn Dunshea. Wallpaper comes in rolls. Look at the hanging instructions, the roll length and pattern repeat, as well as paste recommendations. “It’s essential to find out the recommended paste, as every manufacturer is different and papers vary in weight and texture,” explains Kerryn. A good tip is to measure the wall carefully beforehand to make sure that you are not finishing with a tiny narrow strip in the corner. Then follow these steps.

Apply the wallpaper paste to the wall Working from the corner and along the edges, use a paintbrush to apply the wallpaper paste to the wall where you’re going to hang your first drop. Use a roller to apply the paste to the rest of the wall, making sure to get even coverage. Overlap when applying the paste, and roll and brush it beyond the pencil line you drew with the spirit level.

59

Make it Market editor’s top picks wider than the width of your wallpaper. Stand on the ladder holding the top of the wallpaper and line up the pattern on it with the wallpaper next to it. Then follow the same process as you did in step 5.

4

Hang the first drop of wallpaper Standing on a ladder, line up the end of the wallpaper roll with the top of the wall, and the edge of the wallpaper with the straight line that runs down the wall. Run your hand over it, so it sticks to the wall. Step down from the ladder and unroll the wallpaper until the roll is sitting on the floor. Cut the wallpaper from the roll, leaving some overhang.

7

Hang the rest of the wallpaper After hanging the first two sheets of wallpaper, continue applying paste to the wall and hanging the sheets until you’ve covered the entire wall. Make sure the wallpaper matches the pattern of the sheet next to it and follows its straight line.

Use a utility knife to cut from the centre to each corner of the outline, leaving an X-shaped cut in the wallpaper. Smooth down the paper towards each side of the fitting, then trim off the excess wallpaper.

Make it Tiled side table

DIY mosaic tiles

To make the small mosaics in this colour palette, we cut down 97mm-square tiles using a tile cutter. We used seven tiles in Sunflower and Strawberry, six in White and four in Duck Egg on a 450mm-diameter tabletop. Here’s how to cut them.

1

2

TOOLS & MATERIALS

Photography Larnie Nicolson. Project, instructions and styling Sam van Kan

To score and snap a tile in half, use a combination square to mark the centre of the tile. Wearing goggles and protective gloves, hold the tile cutter in one hand and the tile in the other hand with the top side up. Run the wheel along the halfway mark to score the surface then use both hands to finish the cut by snapping it. Score and snap the tiles in half and half again to make quarters of the original tile. Score and snap the smaller pieces in half and half again to make 16 squares from each original tile. Tip: It’s easier to cut the fiddly shapes for the curved edge of the table from rectangular pieces. Keep aside two tiles of each colour to score and snap them in half, but stop at the final snap to make 24mm x 48mm pieces.

Safety equipment

Create your own look with different tile colour combinations

1

To plan a pattern, cut a circle from draft paper the same size as the tabletop. Set it out on a flat surface then arrange the mosaics in your desired pattern.
Use a 50mm-wide brush to apply tile bond latex over the tabletop. Leave to dry thoroughly.
Beginning at the centre of the table, work in 100mm sections to apply tile adhesive with the adhesive spreader. Transfer tiles from the draft paper to the centre of the table, positioning tile spacers between mosaics for even gaps. Apply another section of adhesive and transfer the next square of colours, working outwards and positioning the mosaics quickly before the adhesive skins over.

Wipe away any excess adhesive with a damp sponge. To cut the edge mosaics to fit, position them one at a time to draw a cut line along the top with a china marker. Hold the tile cutter over the line to score and snap. Apply tile adhesive under each mosaic and press into position on the tabletop. Leave the adhesive to dry for at least a day. To paint the base and sides, position the table upside down on a smooth, clean surface in a well-ventilated space and apply spray paint in thin smooth layers, working around the base to completely cover the base and sides, leaving the paint to dry thoroughly for at least two hours.

4

2 3

5

6

To grout the tabletop, shake the bottle well and trim the tapered nozzle so the opening is 3mm, then hold the bottle at 90º to the surface to apply. Compact the grout into the joints firmly by wiping over the top with a grout float. Apply a layer to the outside edge of the table, making sure you cover any rough bits of tile, and smooth over with the corner of the float. Leave the grout for 15 minutes to firm in the joints. Use a clean damp sponge to remove excess grout, working diagonally across the joints, rinsing the sponge in clean water often. Leave grout for up to 24 hours to harden, then buff and polish the surface with a clean cloth. ◆

paint to saturate the felt pads and strip. Hold the stamp over the lower half of a tile and press to transfer the pattern. Repeat to make the appropriate number of ‘six’ tiles, reloading with paint every three tiles. To make the double-six tile, flip the stamp, line up the middle felt strip and press. On the stamp, remove the two middle spots and position a new one in the centre, creating a five-spot pattern. Remove or add felt pads on the grid to create the remaining spot patterns and repeat. Tip: The felt pads can become saturated with paint and come unstuck, so check them before reloading with paint and replace with new felt pads as necessary. To make the double-zero tile, take a full floorprotection strip, remove the backing and adhere it to a 25mm dowel offcut. Saturate with paint and centre it over the remaining blank tile. Touch up uneven spots by adhering a clean felt pad to the dowel and reapplying paint as needed.

GARDEN-STAKES RING TOSS The hoops in this game of hoopla are made of rope joined with copper, which adds a little weight for efficient throwing. Use the pipe cutter to make the connectors and watch the polyurethane adhesive expand like foam as it dries. TOOLS & MATERIALS

Flip a 30cm basin upside down. Use a sharp utility knife to trim the end of the sisal rope diagonally. Run the rope around the rim of the basin, overlapping the end by about 10mm, and cut diagonally. Position a 100mm-long piece of cloth tape upside down. Thread a connector onto the rope, position the ends over the tape and dab polyurethane adhesive onto the join. Wear gloves to tightly twist the tape around it. Move the connector over the taped join and apply adhesive into the ends. Position the hoop back on the

upside-down basin. Set out cardboard offcuts on the work surface in preparation for the quickly expanding adhesive. Use a water spritzer to dampen the rope and spray into the connector. Tip: Moisture activates the adhesive to make it expand, and the rope will hold its shape as it dries. Move the damp hoop onto the cardboard, then repeat to make five hoops. Watch the adhesive expand, moving the hoops every few minutes to avoid sticking to the cardboard. When the foam has hardened, trim it away then shine up the copper with metal polish and a cloth. â—†

Succulent sensation What they look like Characterised by thick, fleshy leaves, stems or roots, succulents are a diverse group of plants that come in a range of colours, shapes, sizes and textures. They can trail, climb, clump, creep, form rosettes or grow into larger-than-life specimens in the ground or pots. There are so many varieties to choose from, you won’t be able to stop at just one.

Why we love them Succulents are drama queens without diva personalities. There are so many wonderful shapes, but having evolved to cope with hot, dry conditions, they don’t need much water and can survive a certain amount of neglect – perfect for indoors or dry gardens. They’re great in pots and hanging baskets, and are inexpensive and easy to propagate. How to grow them Plant in free-draining soil or potting mix and position in full sun or part shade, depending on the variety. While they don’t need much water, don’t neglect them entirely. Water the soil, avoiding wetting the foliage or allowing water to pool on the crown, as this can lead to rot. Check regularly for mealy bugs, which love to hide between leaves, and treat with insecticide as required. Feed in spring with succulent-specific fertiliser. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.co.nz/plants

Where they grow Succulents will grow in most climates, from temperate to cool areas, but most will not tolerate frost or very humid conditions unless well protected. They’re suitable for growing indoors, in a brightly lit spot. Check plant labels for specific growing conditions, as some prefer to be in a slightly shady spot.
