Welcome
A word from our editor Interest rates may be low, but that doesn’t mean that we suddenly all have bags of cash to splash, even when it comes to things such as enjoying your home. We really hope you’ll be inspired by the work of the talented teams behind the new Make It Yours series, which you can find on Bunnings’ YouTube
channel; the teams were challenged to make some seriously stylish changes to the rooms they were allocated, while keeping an eye on a pretty strict budget. See the first rooms (along with how they did it) from page 40. There’s plenty more here to help you fix up your home, from a deep dive into rich navy blues (page 35) to a look at the latest in LEDs and how to use them (page 58). Plus, we’re bringing Christmas home with a whole mass of stunning festive lighting (love those kiwis!) and an extensive gift guide, with presents at every price point, that we hope will help you check off every family member and friend on your list. Enjoy the issue!
MAKE IT YOURS
The Bunnings Make It Yours video series kicked off with a bang last month, featuring the room-by-room transformation of a small home from drab to drop-dead gorgeous. The Bunnings crew has teamed up with some of our favourite style creators, who have each tackled an area of the home, applying their savvy ideas and budget-wise solutions to revamp each space. The video episodes, released on the Bunnings website and YouTube channel, will reveal a different room week by week. This month, the room reveals will include those below.

year-round bach vibe? Is it possible? The answer is a resounding yes. A smattering of neutral-hued furnishings, paired with toned-down pastels and pops of colour, mean that balmy days are here to stay. Comfort is king, so take the time to test seating and choose durable materials for a lasting, ‘welcome all’ atmosphere.

Plan it Renovation tips
If you’ve outgrown your home but love where you live, an extension could be the perfect solution
Extending 101 Looking to enlarge your home? We explore how you can create space and what you need to know before you go out or up
A

carefully considered home extension can make an amazing change in terms of aesthetics, comfort and convenience. Plus it can add value to your property. Extending your current home – whether going out, up, or even down – can make more sense than moving, especially if you’re happy living there. We look at what an extension entails and what you really need to know. Getting started Before you embark on an extension, it’s important to be very sure of what you’re hoping to achieve. Maybe you’d like a second storey or a sleep-out for teenagers, even a room for Granny? Perhaps you want a bigger kitchen or a second bathroom. What you can do depends very much on the size, shape, layout, age and condition of your house. It might be straightforward, such as simply building another wing or enclosing a verandah, or more complex, like building into a basement space. If you’re adding another level, bear in
mind that you will inevitably lose some existing space in order to install stairs.
while others will judge this task best left to your builder, who is more hands on.
Design and consents When you know more or less what you want, you’ll need an architectural designer or architect to interpret your ideas – as an added bonus, they are likely to have kept up to date with what your local council requires, and what the relevant authorities will or won’t let you do. For instance, extending the property’s footprint will in many cases only need council consent, but for other projects – especially involving heritage buildings, or what are deemed buildings of interest – resource consent may be required. Some architectural designers and architects will provide you with a rough estimate of the cost of your extension,
Getting on site Steve Lawson at Trade Guys Renovations (tradeguys.co.nz) says that even with a consented extension, a builder can only price according to what he or she can see or is aware of. “We know the cost of the materials and the labour, but when you’re extending an existing home, especially an older one, there can be surprises – and they’re sometimes not nice ones,” he says. “For example, when we’re doing a basement extension, we’ll sometimes find that the footings aren’t up to current standards, and obviously fixing that will add to the cost of the job.” Steve says it’s essential for homeowners to be realistic and put aside a contingency fund for variations. ¿

High life Whether they’re providing shade, making a statement or hiding ugly bits, trees and climbers are the hardest working plants in the garden
C
hoosing the right tree or climbing plant for your garden can be overwhelming, as there are so many options. The one that is right for you depends on what final purpose you want the plant to serve. Is it to hide an eyesore or to cover a fence or wall? Is it meant as a privacy screen? Or are you looking for a tree to provide shade from the hot summer sun? “Success in your garden comes from researching thoroughly before you plant,” says Denise Cleverley of Kiwi Flora. “Find out exactly what conditions a plant prefers and what dimensions it grows to. Always plant the right plant in the right place and you won’t be disappointed.” Evergreen or deciduous Evergreens keep their green foliage year-round, providing a constant, consistent colour, while deciduous plants drop their leaves in the winter. The upside to deciduous plants is that the leaves often change to a vibrant colour before dropping – from green to yellow, orange, or even red. The downside is that the plants

look bare in winter, though this can be an advantage; minus their leaves, deciduous vines and trees allow the sun through to warm the winter garden, patio or home. Shady characters Most climbers and trees prefer a sunny location – perfect if you’re using them for shady shelter from the heat – but if the spot is shaded, the choices become limited. Japanese maples, some roses, star jasmine and Carolina jasmine are among those that are content in part shade. “White flowers particularly stand out, so bring life to shaded areas by planting plenty of white flowering plants,” says Denise.

An abundant climbing rose creates a fairytale retreat in this cottage-style garden
“For climbing roses, the best time to prune is midJune to mid-August; the further north, the earlier” Hayden Foulds New Zealand Rose Society
Private life Trees and climbers are great for enhancing privacy on a visually exposed site, but not all climbers and trees are good for use as screens. For climbers, some clingers and suckers, like ivy (a pest plant in some areas), will creep into walls or fences and destroy them. Vines also
hold moisture, and if spread over a wooden fence, excess moisture will damage the timber. When growing against a wooden fence, it’s a good idea to attach a trellis first that can be easily removed, or grow the climber along wires. Excellent climbers for privacy include star jasmine, lemon-
25
TRAINING CLIMBERS There are two useful types of climbing vines for screening: twining and tendril climbers. Twining vines send out new shoots in a wide-arching motion looking for something to latch on to. They wind around their support in a spiralling motion. These include wisteria and mandevilla. Tendril vines have long, thin, whip-like tendrils that wind around support once they find it. These include passionfruit, grapes and sweet peas.
Netting (at least 4cm wide), trellis, stakes, bamboo and horizontal wire work well for tendril climbers. Poles, obelisks and horizontal or vertical wires work well for twiners. To create wire supports, use steel rope wire held by saddle clips or screw eyes. Space the wires 30-45cm apart. Trellis can be positioned 30cm above soil level. After planting, tie stems of plants to the support. As the plants grow, train them up their support, tying in place if necessary. Wisteria is a twining climber with a lovely scent

scented Jasminum azoricum, mandevilla (northern areas only), clematis hybrids, pandorea, wisteria, climbing roses and the native Tecomanthe speciosa, also known as Three Kings vine. Quick-to-grow, thick-foliaged, evergreen trees are also ideal for hideaway gardens. Try these: pittosporum, photinia, callistemon, eugenia, camellia, juniper or ‘Little Gem’ magnolia. Plant for perfection If you intend to plant a climber at the foot of a wall, it needs to be a minimum of 30cm away from the structure. This ensures the roots receive adequate water when it rains and allows for air circulation to minimise disease.
When planting trees for a privacy screen, determine the tree’s mature width (check the plant label or research online), and divide that by three. Space your trees at this distance. Large, single, ornamental trees that provide shade need room to grow. Do not plant them against a wall or the side of your house as the roots may cause damage, and avoid planting in the vicinity of pipes, drains and power lines. Popular shade trees include maple, cercis, albizia, jacaranda, tulip tree, ash, honey locust and oak. Tender loving care Once established, climbing vines don’t need much care. Trim them back by one-third once a year so they don’t get
completely out of control. Hayden Foulds of the New Zealand Rose Society suggests, “Prune old-fashioned varieties of once-flowering climbing roses after they flower.” Most climbers grow best with their roots in cool soil and their leaves and flowers in the sun, so a layer of mulch, such as bark or compost, around the base is beneficial. However, don’t let the mulch touch the central stem as rot may occur. In spring, apply fertiliser. “For climbing roses, choose a slow-release fertiliser such as blood and bone when planting, otherwise you will burn all the new roots when they start growing,” says Hayden. When planting trees, dig a hole twice as big as the root
ball. Place a little compost at the base of the hole and mix in granular slow-release fertiliser. Place the tree in the hole, add a couple of stakes to either side of the tree, and backfill with a mixture of existing soil and compost. The tree should be planted at the same depth it was growing in its pot or bag. Tie the tree to the stakes with soft material, such as old pantyhose. Water well, then mulch. Apply slow-release fertiliser every six or 12 months from the base of the tree to the drip line. Many trees do not require pruning, but most can be, to maintain their shape and a height that suits your garden. Branches may be thinned to let in light, if necessary, leaving the height to maintain privacy. } bunningsnz

rom the serenity of a turquoise ocean to the blissful impact of cloudless skies on a sunny day, blue is a colour that inspires a feeling of calm. Deep shades of inky blue imbue a space with the same feeling of tranquillity, yet with an edge of sophistication, a powerful richness and intensity. To enjoy its feel-good benefits and refined style at home, take the plunge and go bold. Why we love it Effortlessly chic, timeless and incredibly versatile, dark blue may just be the new black. “Deep and dark blues help to ground us,” says Rachel Lacy, colour category manager for PPG ANZ. With its strong ocean connection, it’s also a hue synonymous with smart, tailored sophistication, making it the go-to accent for Hamptons-style homes – think preppy blue-and-white nautical stripes and classic coastal styling. “Deep and dark blues invite us to unwind, slow down and take time for ourselves and the people and activities most important to us. They’re restful and promote relaxation,” says Rachel. While navy can feel quite formal, it’s equally at home with more laid-back, eclectic or boho interiors. “Navy blue is fresh, calming and timeless, it also provides a great alternative to black, dark brown and charcoal greys,” says Dulux colour expert Davina Harper. To illustrate, think of indigo, which features heavily in shibori textiles, denim and patterned ceramics. Whatever interior look you covet, there’s always a blue to suit.

Dramatic backdrop Deep blue is a great all-rounder and works equally well inside and out. “Navy blue is a popular choice for front doors – especially when teamed with a crisp white, such as Dulux Okarito, or a soft grey, such as Dulux Manorburn Double,” says Davina. Although, she warns, mid to dark colours are not suitable for some substrates, so it’s important to check the LRV (light reflectance value) and seek professional advice before painting your house. With its tranquil meditative qualities, blue is also at home in living spaces and bedrooms, where it can feel serene and cocooning. “As inherently restful hues, deep and dark blues are ideal in bedrooms,” says Rachel. Shades of navy can also add mood and depth to a bathroom, particularly when paired with white tiles, trims, fixtures and plantation shutters. Dark shades of blue are also trending in kitchens right now.

Navy blue cabinetry is surprisingly versatile; pair it with a patterned tile or subway splashback for a modern farmhouse or coastal look, or turn up the luxe factor and complement the rich dark hue with marble-look or stone benchtops, and touches of brass or copper. Blue illusion Darker palettes can make a space feel smaller, so carefully consider room size and the effect you want to create. In some areas of the house, a cocooning feel may be just what you’re after – an insulated space where you can curl up with a book, or enjoy a sleep-in. “It is always important to consider the amount of available light in the environment and the purpose of the space, to avoid inadvertently creating a cavernous effect or a sleepy feeling in an area where energy is important,” says Rachel. If you want to create a cosy, warm, comforting aesthetic, Rachel suggests choosing a dark moody blue, like PPG Paints Elegant Evening. “Whereas if you are after a more vibrant vibe, opt for a livelier blue hue, like PPG Paints Chinese Porcelain,” she says. bunningsnz

Update it Choosing a shade When selecting the perfect shade of blue it’s important to consider how it will sit with existing furnishings, flooring and surfaces. “We recommend using a sample pot of preferred paint colours to first test the colours out on the wall or surface to be painted, in several different places,” says Rachel Lacy. “This is the best way to see how a colour will look in the environment at different times of the day and from different angles and to get a good sense of the feelings it will help create.” The PPG Paints Colour Tool offers another way to visualise the look and feel of colours in a space without needing to apply paint. You can also select the shade of blue that most appeals to you on the Dulux website, and order free large colour swatches to try at home.
PRO TIP If you’re painting a dark shade on walls, preparation is key. Make sure there are no imperfections, and be aware you’ll need several coats to achieve a rich finish
Perfect pairings “A surprising amount of colours go with navy,” says Davina Harper, who suggests teaming navy with white and beige for a fresh, Hamptons-style look. “Navy also goes well with accent colours that are very on-trend in interiors at the moment, soft lilac and also burnt orange, rust and terracotta.” For a more adventurous look, Davina suggests teaming navy with a citrus hue such as Dulux Zalatown. But beware of pairing it with other dark shades, like black. Distinguished accent If you’re a little colour shy, add a hit of dark blue in soft furnishings. Blues can add intensity to a white-walled room in the form of artworks, patterned fabrics, floor rugs or details on lamp shades or cushions. ◆

Update it Make It Yours makeovers
Home improvement The Bunnings Make It Yours video series of easy DIY projects and chic styling have turned a bland house into a beautiful home
This 90s home was in need of a refresh
Pretty in paint This striking kitchen revamp was the work of stylemakers Az De La Cruz and Jamie House, of Haus of Cruze. The underbench cabinets were sound, but dated, so the apricotcoloured laminate was given a lift with Tirau Double from the Dulux Renovation Range. For the benchtop, the team used the specialist benchtop coating from the same paint collection. “It was super easy to do,” says Az, explaining that using a smooth roller and finishing with a gloss clear coat gave the bench its shine.
T
he Bunnings crew has teamed up with some of our favourite style creators to transform a small home on a typical firsthome buyer’s budget. Each team has tackled a different area, starting with a kitchen/dining transformation by Az De La Cruz and Jamie House of Haus of Cruze (@hausofcruze) and a bedroom makeover by Geneva Vanderzeil, founder of Collective Gen (@genevavanderzeil). “The styling was decades old, but we saw a lot of potential. The space had great bones!” says Az of the tired kitchen-diner. “An open-plan kitchen and dining with a north-facing aspect flooded with natural light ticks all the boxes for the perfect entertaining space.”

Az and Jamie gave the pantry door a lift with panelling. “By simply adding a sleek matte black handle to the door, we instantly add depth and introduce a contrast in texture – perfect for a contemporary, luxe look and feel,” explains Az.

Into the woods The revamp centres around the chic panel fronting the peninsular bench. Made from half round dowel, it has turned a plain piece of joinery into a stunning feature. Although it was the priciest element of the makeover, Az points out that it was far cheaper than having a bespoke cabinet made with a similar look: “It gives a luxe look on a millennial’s budget!”

The table, bar stools and pew were bought second-hand
Bargain hunters Az and Jamie were faced with the conundrum of any first-home buyer: furnishing a space from scratch without blowing the budget. The solution was to upcycle! Geneva
The big sleep The main bedroom, with four plain walls and no distinguishing features, offered up the ultimate blank canvas for style creator Geneva Vanderzeil, founder of Collective Gen, who is known for her warm, textured interior style. “It had a large window that we used as a focal point,” says Geneva, who used simple craft projects, layered textures and loads of greenery to bring the space to life.
Before
“The plants we chose have air-purifying qualities, so I’m hoping that makes it easier to sleep in that room and relax” Geneva Vanderzeil Collective Gen
Wall flower “The problem with these types of houses is they’re very flat with no detail, but putting in the panelling made a huge difference and gave the space a lot more character,” explains Geneva. James Hardie ‘HardieGroove’ panelling would fit the ‘modern coastal’ brief and is a solution to a dull plastered wall. This wall was painted in PPG’s Spruce Grove, echoed in the bed linen. “I wanted to bring in some colour, without it being overwhelming,” she adds.

Bedtime story Geneva put her DIY skills to work to create an ingenious wall cushion in place of a bedhead (see how to make it, left). She then hung it from a curtain rod with strips of leather – “They’re actually thrifted leather belts,” she explains. Just add comfy pillows for a luxe and utterly unique bedroom look. Storage plus The room was already equipped with wardrobes. Painting them in Dulux Vivid White and making the main wall a feature with PPG’s Spruce Grove, they no longer dominate the room. A little extra storage was created with a length of dowel and some jute webbing (below).
Paint colours may vary on application
Breathe easy “Getting a lot of plants in this room was a big focus because they make a space feel really welcoming.” Geneva chose a rubber plant, ferns, devil’s ivy and string of pearls plants.
Freshly furnished Keen to add some on-trend rattan to the space, but with an eye on the slim budget, Geneva came up with an innovative way to upcycle second-hand bedside chests and a dresser with hessian fabric, creating an alternative textural look (see left). “We painted them white and then used hessian, cut to size and attached with adhesive spray,” she explains. “We called it the poor girl’s guide to rattan!” Spray-painting the hardware rose gold provided a luxe-effect finishing touch. ¿ Above: Hanging rack made using Whites 5m jute webbing, $3, SKU: 00127338, Hume 20mm x 1.2m pinetrim dowel, $8.94, SKU: 00293762, and Everhang 50mm zinc S hooks, $2.60 each, SKU: 00175669. our home should be a haven from the outside world, a place you can feel safe and cocooned without fear of intruders. Burglaries in New Zealand are largely crimes of opportunity, so it’s important to stay vigilant. The first thing most people think of when considering security in their home is their front door, but there are many other options. These range from locking your doors and windows (many people don’t!), through to high-tech, smarthome solutions.
Back to basics Time, visibility and sound are the three main factors to consider when boosting your security. In other words, slow down potential burglars, give them nowhere to hide and make sure you can hear them. Time: Even simple but difficult-to-penetrate windows and doors, deadlocks and security screens can slow a burglar down long enough for them to potentially lose interest. Visibility: Lighting at night, particularly sensor lighting, is a must. Keeping trees and shrubs low and trimmed, and ensuring
your fences can be seen over or through will also help you spot anyone lurking around your home. Ensure there are no places for burglars to hide. If you do have high, solid fencing – which many desire for privacy – bump up lighting and security cameras. Sound: Electronic alarm systems are popular in today’s high-tech world, though many people still maintain that a dog is the best alert system you can have! Gravel is another relatively inexpensive way of being alerted to an intruder in your garden. }

LIGHT UP YOUR GARDEN AND DRIVEWAY
Noisy gravel is a cost-effective way to deter potential burglars
“With LED lighting becoming much more affordable to buy and operate, we are seeing more external lighting going in, which can then be programmed” René Genet David Reid Homes
Limited access Even locked, how secure are your doors and windows? While smart home products make our lives easier, they’re only as good as the door they are attached to. Installing any smart technology will be futile if your doors and doorjambs aren’t solid. “A secure door is very important,” says René Genet, business development manager for David Reid Homes (davidreidhomes.co.nz). “Likewise, choosing a good security lock for that door. There are a number of digital products now available which can also be keyless and even opened with an app on your phone or your thumbprint.” All doors and doorjambs should be reinforced with heavy duty metal strike plates, using long screws to ensure they won’t let go easily if someone does try to kick it in. bunnings.co.nz
|
René also suggests investing in multipoint locking hardware for windows. “Security stays can also be specified for your joinery and fitted at manufacture to limit opening of windows that may be a security risk.” Go-go gadgets Once you have your basics in place (robust door, screens and quality hardware), there is a whole array of smart home products that can help to boost your security. Smart technology allows you to control lights outdoors, creating the illusion that someone is at home, while a connected doorbell is an easy way to safeguard your house – it lets you see who is at the door before you open it. A picture of the person can be sent directly to your smartphone, allowing you to see and even speak to them from wherever you are.
bunningsnz
Security! Try these extra tricks to deter potential baddies. Grow prickly bushes under windows. Cut back trees around a multi-storey house, particularly near windows and balconies. Invest in shatterproof glass or install window film. Put up a ‘Beware of the dog’ sign, even if you don’t have a dog. Store ladders out of sight. Leave worn men’s work boots by the door. I see you Visibility is one of the most important security elements. Sensor lights – both solar and wired in – are highly effective, if strategically placed. Jason Neophytou, lifestyle expert at HPM, says, “Position them to cover large areas such as pathways and driveways, open areas in the garden and around the pool. Motion sensor lighting along pathways deters intruders, acts as an alert when someone is approaching the house, and illuminates any uneven surfaces for invited guests. It’s also helpful to install sensor lights within your garage, as this is often where valuable items are stored.” Ensure your street number is visible at night by using large reflective numbers, backlit with automated lighting or illuminated with a simple solar light. This will help police to find your home in an emergency. ¿

A spotless bathroom is achievable with the right products and a little bit of elbow grease
Bathroom blitz
D
uring all the excitement of Christmas, it can be easy to forget cleaning and organising the one room in the home that every guest will visit: the bathroom. Here’s how to clean yours like a pro, anticipate your guests’ needs, and cement your reputation as a host with the most. Clear the clutter Facing an avalanche of shampoo bottles and old razors? First, group the same kinds of products together so you know what you have, suggests home organisation consultant Liz Bradley (thetidylady.co.nz). “Then check expiry dates, especially for medicines and make-up – throw out anything that has expired. If you don’t like something anymore or haven’t used it, pass it on to friends, family or a charity.”

Update it Beautify your bathroom
Silicone success “Nothing looks worse in the bathroom than old, mouldy or discoloured silicone,” says Ranshu Joshi, brand manager at Selleys. “The good news is it’s easy to remove old silicone and update with a new waterproof silicone sealant.” Use a sharp knife to cut away the old silicone, then apply a silicone remover evenly on the surface. “Wait two hours, then use a scraper to remove the softened silicone,” she says. “Clean the surface with turps, spray the area with a mould killer and apply a new wet area silicone, following the instructions. Using the right sealant will help stop those mouldy spots returning.”
Grout pout Keeping your grout looking fresh is an easy way to maintain your bathroom’s good looks. Look for a grout cleaner that not only covers and whitens stains but also contains a fungicide to help prevent mould re-growth, like Selleys White for Life tile and grout cleaner. However, if your grout is beyond redemption, replacing it entirely is an achievable, if laborious, DIY job. Apply an easy-clean epoxy grout and choose a good quality grout sealer to make it easier to maintain in the long run. Visit the Bunnings website for helpful tips on removing, applying and sealing grout.
Scrub a dub dub The secret weapon to difficult-to-clean soap scum is baking soda, which you can sprinkle on a damp cloth and scrub. For tougher scum build-up, mix with vinegar and apply as a paste. Let it sit on the stain, then scrub – the acidity in the vinegar will help break down the scum. 1 2

For the finishing touch, add a plant that likes humidity, such as a Boston fern or a spider plant. ¿

Smart storage You don’t need masses of storage to keep your bathroom tidy. One idea is to use a cutlery organiser to store the products you use most often and keep it in easy reach. Other than that, bins, boxes and baskets are your best friends, says Liz Bradley, who suggests labelling them for quick access. If bathroom space is at a premium, she also advises keeping medicines, first aid and back-up products elsewhere. “There’s no rule that says they have to stay in the bathroom,” she says.

Fix it Barbecue maintenance
Good clean fun If your barbecue looks worse for wear, slip on the rubber gloves and get it gleaming in time for some summer grilling
H
ave you been putting off cleaning your barbecue, afraid to lift the lid on last year’s leftover grease? Before the season of alfresco dining kicks in, get your barbie back in shape and operating cleanly and safely. Just follow our easy guide to make short work of this pre-summer chore. Maintenance tip
Safety first Check the gas cylinder valve is closed tightly. Briefly switch on one of the burners to vent any gas that might be left in the lines, then disconnect the hose.
Words Gun Arvidssen. Photography Getty Images
Grate expectations Fill a large plastic tub with hot water and dishwashing detergent. Remove the grill and hot plate and place them into the water. Use a combination grill rake and scraper to get the cooking surfaces clean. “The BBQ Buddy grill rake and scraper is essentially two tools in one,” says Diana Dulevski, product manager for BBQ Buddy. “Use the rake to get between your grill rails and remove any grease or grime, then flip over to the scraper and clean burnt-on food from your hot plate.”
Over time, barbecue parts can become damaged, more so if you live near the coast where the air’s high salt content may accelerate corrosion. It is vital flame tamers – the shields that sit over the flames – in particular are in top condition to help reduce the risk of fire, especially in summer. Find replacement parts at Bunnings.
Use barbecue wipes to clean off any remaining gunk. For the outside of the barbecue, use a cleaner such as Glitz BBQ stainless steel cleaner and polish any windows or glass with a microfibre cloth. Drop the drips If your barbie has a separate oil collector or run-off tray, empty it into a jar, secure the lid tightly and dispose of it in the rubbish bin. Do not pour it down the drain! Remove the drip tray, throw out any bits and pieces, then give it a thorough clean. Line it with foil and add mineral fat absorber to help minimise the risk of fat flare-ups.
Claim to flame Gently remove the flame tamers, scraping off any residue, and clean them with a sponge scourer. It’s important to keep these in good repair, as they stop food juices and fat falling directly on the burners, preventing blockages. If they’re in poor condition, Safe as hoses replace them to prevent a fire risk (see box). Reassemble the barbie and reconnect the gas. “Check the gas hose and regulator, Brush with success making sure they are tightened correctly, Use a grill brush to remove any remaining and give the connections a once-over with grime. “The tough bristles will easily scrape a gas leak detection spray,” says Daniel away burnt-on food and built-up grease, Shirley, Bunnings barbecue and outdoor while the angled design will reach into all heating buyer. “If you find any cracks or the corners of the barbecue,” says Diana. deterioration in the hose or regulator seal,
you should replace the hose assembly,” he says. “A great addition is a gas safety gauge, which will stop the flow of gas in the event of a major leak or regulator failure.” The integrated gauge is also a handy way to ensure you’ll never run out of gas mid-grill. To finish, ignite the burners and let run for at least 10 minutes so any remaining water can evaporate. Turn off the burners, allow everything to cool down and then spray the cooking surfaces with cooking oil to protect from rust. And voilà! You’re ready for outdoor feasting. ◆

Room to grow
Create a lush vertical garden with trailing herbs, edible flowers and leafy greens

Be a space-savvy gardener with our tips on growing a bumper crop of edibles in the smallest of gardens
D
on’t let a small backyard cramp your gardening style. If you don’t have much room, think outside the plot. Raised beds, vertical gardens and modular kits are just a few of the clever tools you can use to grow veges and herbs in tight spaces, without losing out on bountiful crops. The minimum requirements are room to maintain and harvest and, of course, adequate sunlight (six hours daily, at least). With those boxes ticked, you’ll start seeing every space as a growing opportunity.
Potted citrus and tomatoes need plenty of sun, feeding and free draining soil to thrive
55
Well grounded To figure out how much room you need for potential crops, consider what you want to grow and work from there; if it’s a few compact herbs and leafy greens, a small in-ground garden is sufficient. However, if the soil is difficult to dig or you have no bare ground at all, raised beds or modular kits are ideal. “It’s important to understand that all raised beds will sink,” says Rosie Cameron, brand manager at Absco, supplier of Organic Garden Co raised beds. “One technique is to fill the base of the garden bed with logs, sticks and leaves – don’t fill up the garden bed completely with soil. Add compost and top soil.” Modular kits often allow you to create a variety of shapes from one product, so you’re bound to find a fit suited to your space. Plant up Where space is at a premium, choose plants that will give you more bang for your buck. “Perfect plants that are compact and fit for small spaces include peppers, cherry tomatoes, snow peas, container spinach and, of course, herbs such as rosemary, basil and parsley,” says Rosie. THE ONLY WAY IS UP If floor space is at a premium, grow up! “Vertical gardens provide amazing opportunities to grow a variety of veges, herbs and flowers, especially if you have a small balcony or courtyard,” says Matt Wichmann, brand and marketing manager at Holman. Opt for a vertical garden kit with a built-in irrigation system, making caring for your potted crops as easy as turning on the tap – or setting a tap timer.
Whites ‘Garden Up’ freestanding vertical garden, $155, SKU: 02940958
EXPERT TIP “It’s common practice to place lower growing plants at the front of a raised bed and the highest at the back. However, it’s important to take note where the sunlight will reach the produce” Rosie Cameron Absco brand manager
However, depending on the size of your space, your choices may be restricted. Root veges, such as carrots and parsnips, need deeper soil, but 300mm will suffice for herbs and salad greens. If you’re after potatoes, you can purchase specialty ‘potato bags’, so there’s no need to dig up the garden – or to dig at all, except when you’re bandicooting for spuds. Dwarf varieties deliver standard size fruit and vegetables on a smaller plant, while vines can be trained up a support, taking up minimal horizontal space. } bunningsnz

NO DIG, YES PLEASE! When building a raised garden bed, a no-dig garden can be built over grass, concrete or paving. It involves layering various materials, such as newspaper, pea straw, grass clippings, manure and compost, to create a nutrient-rich mix for your plants to grow. “Raised beds are a wonderful way to grow vegetables,” says Scott. “They are easy to access and the soil warms faster in spring.”
The essentials All good growth starts from the ground up, whether growing in soil or potting mix. Scott Bromwich of Daltons says, “Using mixes takes the guess factor out of developing your own growing medium, where it can often be quite difficult to know what nutrients are available in your soil and in what amount.” When growing in raised beds, it’s important to refresh your soil each year with fresh compost or planting mix. “In smaller containers or pots, replace the old mix with a new one,” says Scott. He also suggests adding a layer of mulch on top to protect the soil and keep moisture from evaporating, as pots and containers tend to dry out faster than garden beds.
Here’s how to do it: Line the base of your bed with thick overlapping sheets of newspaper or cardboard and wet down. Wet pea straw and spread a 10cm thick layer over the newspaper. Spread a 10cm thick layer of compost over the straw, and then a layer of grass clippings sprinkled with manure. Repeat with layers of straw, compost, clippings and manure until the bed is full, ending with straw. When you’re ready to plant, part the straw to create a planting pocket. Fill with compost, plant and water well. ¿

Light fantastic Brighten up your life like never before with energy-efficient, long-lasting LED technology
L
EDs (light-emitting diodes) have been around since the 60s, but it wasn’t until the invention of high-brightness LEDs about 25 years ago that the technology started to become a viable alternative for other forms of lighting. Now we wouldn’t be without them – they’ve trimmed our power bills and given us unprecedented control over how we light our spaces. But how do you choose the right LED? Bright spots One big advantage of LEDs is their high efficiency; a 12W LED can be almost as bright as a 100W incandescent bulb. “LEDs last up to 25 times longer and typically use about

75 per cent less energy than incandescent lighting,” says Jason Neophytou, HPM lifestyle expert. “LED lights also emit approximately 50 per cent less heat than halogens, keeping your home cooler during the warmer months.” The smarter option Even relatively simple LED bulbs include onboard electronics for power management, and they come in an amazing variety of shapes and sizes. This means most ordinary globes and standard 120cm fluorescent tubes can be replaced very easily, by swapping them for LEDs of similar dimensions. Check with a licensed electrician to see if your globes can

Warm white light works well in relaxed living areas
Cracking the code What does all the weird jargon on the packaging mean? Beam angle: Measured in degrees, a higher number means the light is spread over a wider area. Colour temperature (kelvins): How ‘warm’ or ‘cold’ the light appears. Warm white is around the 3000K mark, while the cool white of daylight tones is about 5500-6500K. Dimmable: Whether the bulb can be used with a conventional electric light dimmer. Equivalent power: This describes the LED’s brightness by comparing it with the power of an incandescent bulb.

Hg: Whether the bulb contains any mercury, a poisonous metal. Lumen: The brightness of light produced. A 100W incandescent bulb emits about 1500-1600lm. t(h): The bulb’s minimum life expectancy in hours (usually at least 15,000). Switching cycles: How many times you can turn the bulb on and off before it starts to wear out. Wattage: How much power the bulb actually uses. LEDs used for overhead lighting are typically in the range of 4W-12W, while halogen downlights tend to be 20W-50W.

Position feet under the front, drilling pilot holes through the sides of the frame 20mm from the base and countersinking with a 9mm bit. Apply adhesive to the feet, reposition them and secure with screws, clamping until dry.
Pro tip Our bed has a 390mm x 650mm mat. Adjust timber measurements to suit the size of pet mat you choose

To make the frame, on the 180mm pine, measure 615mm for the back and two 430mm sides. Cut with a mitre saw. Butt the sides flush against the back, use a 2mm bit to drill three equally spaced pilot holes into each joint, countersink holes with a 9mm bit, then secure with screws.
Position the side supports inside the frame, flush at the base and against the back support, drilling three evenly spaced pilot holes and securing with screws.
To make the base support, on the 40mm pine, cut a 615mm back support and two 375mm side supports. Position the back support against the back of the frame, flush at the base, drilling four evenly spaced pilot holes with a 2mm bit, then secure with screws.
To make the front, from the 40mm pine, cut a 615mm length, position it face down inside the front of the frame over the side supports, checking the base fits behind. Drill pilot holes into the joints, apply adhesive and secure with screws.
6
Apply adhesive around the top of the base support and position the plywood base. Fill the holes around the outside of the frame with adhesive, tap in button plugs with a mallet and leave the assembly to dry. Remove protruding plugs with a sharp chisel, tapping with a mallet if necessary.
7
Sand all over using orbital sander with 240-grit abrasive paper, wiping away dust with a damp cloth. Apply wood varnish/stain with a brush, leave to dry, then apply a second coat, leaving to dry overnight. Drop pet mat into position. ◆

On the 35mm dowel, use combination square to measure two side bars 100mm long, cutting with a mitre saw. To make cord holes, mark along the bars 20mm from either end and in the centre, setting up a drill press with an 8mm drill bit and clamping offcuts to hold the dowel secure while drilling. Use the remaining 1m of dowel as the top bar, measuring 50mm from the ends to make cord holes with the drill press. To make the rails, measure 200mm along the 30mm dowel to cut with a mitre saw. Use this as a template to make 10 lengths, marking and cutting one at a time to allow for the width of the saw blade. Mark the rails 35mm from the ends to make cord holes as above. To make the spacers, mark along the 30mm dowel every 15mm. Using the drill press, make holes at every second mark, then use a mitre saw to cut every other mark to make 18 pieces 30mm long with holes at the centre. Sand dowel pieces with 180-grit paper and block. To seal, apply two
coats of exterior varnish with mini roller, ensuring the end-grain is saturated. Use scissors to cut two 1m lengths from the 7mm sash cord, threading them through either end of a rail, adding a spacer to each, then continue to alternate rails and spacers. Work dowel pieces down the cord so the excess is the same at both ends, thread ends through the side bars and secure at top with a figure-eight knot. With the remaining sash cord, find the centre to fold it over a 6mm rope thimble, and secure it by tightly wrapping nylon cord from the thimble, working downwards and tying off with a gathering knot. Thread cord through holes in the top bar, pushing the bar down to 500mm from the gathering knot, securing with figure-eight knots under the bar. Thread remaining cord from the top bar into the centre holes of the side bars, securing with figure-eight knots underneath. Adjust seat height by tying this knot at the length you require. ◆

Make it DIY play tent
Summer play Pitch camp in the backyard or the living room with this play tent project
W
hether outdoors in the open air or as an inside hideaway, kids love play tents for imaginative play or just as a quiet place to chill. One of the nicest things about this easy DIY project is that the canvas can be decorated exactly as you like.
TOOLS & MATERIALS

To assemble the frame, position a length of dowel through the holes at the top of the front and back braces. Position the remaining dowel through the base holes on either side, using a measuring tape to check the dowel protrudes from the ends by 25mm.

Measure and mark each pine piece 100mm from the top and 30mm from the base, ensuring the marks are centred 20mm from either side. Drill one piece at a time, holding it securely over the edge of a table, using a 20mm spade bit to make holes for the dowel.
Prevent the frame from slipping off the dowel by tapping nails into the protruding ends, leaving the nail heads about 5mm above the surface.

For the cord supports, at the top of two pine pieces, make centre marks 270mm from the end. At the base of the remaining pine pieces, make centre marks 50mm from the end, drilling the holes with a 7mm bit.
Cut the canvas to 1075mm wide by 2400mm long. Use sponges and brushes to decorate with paint, leaving to dry thoroughly.
To make the front brace, cut a 300mm length of cord to thread through the 7mm holes at the top of the pine, knotting the ends. To make the back brace, thread the remaining cord through the 7mm holes at the base of the pine, knotting the ends.
At the corners and halfway along the ends of the canvas, measure 30mm from the edge to make six 5mm-long incisions with scissors. Centre the canvas lengthways over the frame, folding the edges around base, threading cable ties though the incisions and around the dowel to secure, tucking the ends under the tent. Note: The tent isn’t waterproof so make sure to bring it inside. ◆

Colour story Name Petunia
Perennial
Perennial
What they look like Trumpet-shaped flowers come in an array of colours – they can be one shade, multicoloured, striped, starred, with ruffled petals or smooth ones. Plants grow upright or in mounds, spread or tumble, with each type reaching between 15cm and 30cm tall.
Why we love them They are among the easiest flowers to grow and their blooms last for weeks, from spring or summer through autumn. They can handle a surprising amount of heat once established and require little maintenance. Many newer hybrids are self-cleaning, meaning they drop their flowers cleanly and do not require deadheading, but an occasional light trim will keep plants looking tidy. How to grow them Keep young plants well watered, to stop their shallow roots drying out, and maintain a regular watering regime for established plants when rain is absent. Petunias are heavy feeders, so ensure they are adequately fertilised; apply a slow-release fertiliser at planting time, then feed with a liquid version every three or four weeks. If the plants become leggy, trim them back by one half. â—† FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.co.nz/plants

Where they grow Petunias will grow in full sun or part shade, but the more sun they get, the more flowers they produce. They require free-draining soil and, although drought-tolerant, will do better with summer watering. Trailing petunias are perfect for hanging baskets. All types grow well in tubs and patio planters.
