One of the best things about spring is the chance to change up the mealtime routine. With warmer evenings and more daylight, there’s no reason to be anchored to a table indoors. A change of scene does everyone good – especially the meal maker. Check out the low and lovely picnic setting (foldaway tables make this so easy!), a back patio barbecue that will work across the seasons and an intimate, lamp-lit tea party zone, ideal for a front porch or balcony (from page 12).
Our recent DIY project search unearthed a resort-style firepit build on the NSW north coast (page 41). Nice work, Codey! And we show you how to combine an off-therack storage bench and privacy screen to achieve a portable, pop-up, pack-down alfresco nook (page 82). Naturally, there’s loads going on in the garden this month: fast-growing plants to fill garden gaps (page 20), a mushroom raising guide (page 36) and a shortlist of native Australian climbing plants (page 39). Sweetest of all? Our heirloom plants story (page 31) shows remembering loved ones is as easy as taking a cutting from their garden. If you’re looking for ways to entertain the children, our Halloween DIYs (page 75) will do the trick! Enlist their help to create a spooky porch scene, and see who dares to darken your doorstep on October 31. Have fun!

PLANT PARENT
Jumbo joy
What’s in your pot? It’s an elephant ear (Alocasia).
Plant name: Ellie
Climate: Indoors in Hobart, Tasmania.
Plant parent: Celeste
How long have you been caring for your plant? Four years Where did you get it? Bunnings Glenorchy, Tasmania. Where does it live? In the lounge room.
Best feature: Magnificent large leaves – it adds a tropical touch to our mostly cold climate.
Care regime: Water when the soil is starting to feel dry – more in summer, less in winter. Dust the leaves once a month and give her a feed a few times a year.
Something that may surprise people about Ellie: As she’s a tropical plant I thought she would suit a darker room in the house. However, she wasn’t thriving. So I moved her to the lounge room near three big windows and she tripled in size within six to eight months. She even had a pup, so now we have two.

IN THE GARDEN October
Lavish your lawn, raise the stakes in the vegie patch and fill pots with a riot of spring colour
The wait is over for lawn lovers – it’s time for the spring reno! Dethatch with a rake or scarifier, aerate with a corer, top dress uneven areas and treat with a complete fertiliser. Repair bare patches with lawn seed or strips of turf.
To support climbing beans, make a frame with bamboo stakes. For larger crops, build a trellis using two stakes to form an A-frame at each end, secure a horizontal stake across the top and fasten jute netting over the structure.
Look out for fruit fly, Medfly and citrus gall wasp, use suitable hanging traps and protect vulnerable plants with wildlifesafe anti-insect netting or net sleeves.
Plant a hanging basket or pot with colourful annuals such as snapdragons, salvias, marigolds and lobelias. Deadhead and fertilise regularly with a high-potassium formula to encourage more blooms.
Indoors, dose plants with a liquid fertiliser once a fortnight to boost growth. Keep top-heavy plants upright by securing stems to a coir pole or trellis – use soft garden ties to avoid damaging the plant.
After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

A tasty trio
What to plant now for fresh and juicy summer crops
Tomato
A homegrown favourite, plant these in large pots (25cm or bigger) or garden beds. Stake larger varieties to keep them upright and improve airflow.
Sweet corn
Each plant produces only 1-2 cobs, so grow several at a time in blocks (not rows) to encourage pollination and cob development.
Zucchini
This fast grower needs room to move, but it can be supported on a sturdy trellis and encouraged to go up rather than out.
TOOL OF THE MONTH
Ryobi has upgraded its circular saw. The powerful motor and gears allow for deeper cuts of up to 52mm – and its 24-tooth ultrathin blade makes them cleaner and faster.

BACKYARD BARBIE
Set up a dining table and chairs under a pergola or market umbrella, with a drinks station and barbecue nearby so the cook can take part in the conversation, too. A pared-back palette of black with natural timber and hessian allows the beauty of the springtime garden to shine, while festoon lights add a party vibe and moody glow after dark.
Colourful skewers look great on the barbie and on the plate
Keep in mind…
n Follow manufacturer’s instructions for setting up and using your barbecue. Position barbecue on a flat, clear and well-ventilated space outdoors and never leave a lit barbecue unattended.
n Before using a gas barbecue, check the gas hose – do not use if it is crushed, kinked or cracked – and also that your LPG cylinder is in date.
n Check with your local fire service about using barbecues during restrictions such as fire bans. Keep children and pets away from barbecues and gas cylinders and put matches and lighters out of children’s reach.

EXOTIC TEA PARTY
Check the forecast for a balmy day and hold a delectable high tea on the verandah. Layer floor rugs, cushions and table linen, and put up decorative screens to provide privacy. Outdoor lanterns – either solar-powered flame effect or twinkling DIY creations – create a magical atmosphere as dusk falls.

DIY LIVING LANTERNS
Homemade hanging lanterns using chicken wire and bead lights add rustic charm, and are easy additions for areas without hardwired outdoor lighting. Form a wire-netting cylinder around a hanging planter, cut the netting to size using pliers and tuck the top edge into the rim of the pot. With the battery pack/switch at the top, wrap bead lights around the cylinder, threading through the wire at intervals to hold in place. Plant with trailing varieties (we used a selection including Tahitian bridal veil, button fern, ribbon fern and baby’s breath) to cloak the switch and soften the effect.

PLANTING PLAN
In the front garden, blue chalksticks (Senecio mandraliscae) and dainty but robust seaside daisy (Erigeron karvinskianus) are flanked by fan aloe (Aloe plicatilis) and a bushy licorice plant (Helichrysum petiolare). Salvia ‘Black and Bloom’ (Salvia guaranitica) lines the boundary fence, providing a beautiful splash of blue.
A fairly wet first summer helped the garden to become established
Blurring the lines
When an ‘instant garden’ is required, these plants step up, softening edges, creating views and spreading joy
Boxes are unpacked and curtains hung. But it’s often plants that make a new address feel like home. And with a new build, on a block tracked with tradies’ boot prints, a garden may seem an age away. The solution is vigorous, fast-growing plants – and perhaps some transplanted favourites – to create privacy and settle the house (and occupants) into a location.
In this case, a potted frangipani tree was ready to take its place at the family’s new home. “The frangipani had travelled with me for 10 years and, when finally in the ground, it exploded in size and health,” homeowner Madeleine says. There were also a couple of mature trees on the back boundary helping to screen out neighbouring properties, but still plenty of gaps to be filled.
PLANNED PERFECTION
The compact, contemporary house steps up a sloping urban site, with living areas perched above the street and bedrooms and garage below. Views to the garden spaces make the modest floor plan feel bigger, and Madeleine, an architect, had created visual connections at every turn, anticipating front and rear gardens, side boundary plants and a rear lawn for cartwheeling kids. “We wanted a garden view from every room,” she says.
Although not far from the beach, this isn’t a coastal garden. It’s full of proven performers – a mix of drought tolerant and vigorous specimens – and a colour palette that shifts from silvery greys at the front to lush, tropical greens at the sides and rear.
WALK THIS WAY
The stairs that lead to the home’s side entry pass between a shallow reflection pond and a sculptural row of silver torch cacti (Cleistocactus strausii), used instead of a traditional hedge on the boundary. Rosemary and succulents tumble over the garage from the front garden, softening the building’s base, while the reinforced garage roof is planted with a romantic garden, filled with soft shades.
That thriving frangipani and a mature crepe myrtle on the other front boundary are underplanted with groundcovers and low shrubs in silver, blues and greens. Narrow side beds are filled with cordylines, walking iris, native violet and jasmine –bringing a seasonal fragrance hit – while an outdoor shower is well used by the family’s surfers. And in a rear courtyard, a spiky, showy Madagascan palm can be enjoyed from a bedroom.
The lush and layered perimeter planting of the rear garden is visible from both the front and rear living spaces. A tropical selection of green and purple foliage plants reaches up the sloping boundaries, while the spreading canopies of two existing mature trees – a cypress and a tuckeroo – helpfully screen overlooking properties. Side beds are crowded with silver lady ferns, prayer plant, begonias and sculptural elephant ears.
A few years on and Madeleine’s garden views have been well and truly realised, thanks to the many high-performing species. “Our ‘treehouse’ now lives up to its name,” she says.
“I wake up to the crepe myrtle and frangipani trees every morning – it’s beautiful watching them grow and change“
Madeleine/homeowner

SILVER SCENE
The front-of-house plants were selected for their spilling and spreading qualities, with silvery grey foliage in common – the perfect disguise for the concrete garage and steel fence. Mounds of licorice plant and cotton lavender occupy the mid level, and the frangipani owns the space – and throws scent – in summer. Seasonal highlights include bright blue salvia, tiny pink and white daisies and a pink crepe myrtle.

Feed the lawn and free up your time with Scotts Lawn Builder, turning the yard into your family’s favourite space
There’s a lot of advice floating around about the best way to take care of your lawn. Some people think watering and mowing every couple of weeks is enough. While this should help to keep the grass alive, it will be far from looking
its best. So, what can you do to care for your lawn properly, without taking up any more of your precious time on weekends? That’s easy: use Scotts Lawn Builder All Lawn Types Lawn Food Now, we know what you’re thinking...
“But that’s fertiliser – won’t it make the grass grow quicker?”
Hear us out on this. Scotts Lawn Builder is a fertiliser but, unlike some products which tend to dump all their nutrients
in one go, Scotts is slow release. The nutrients it contains take up to three months to be fully absorbed by the grass, which actually prevents surges in growth. So as the roots of your grass are slowly nourished and encouraged to grow deeper into the soil, the lawn grows thicker rather than too tall, too fast.
“Won’t it feed the weeds, too?”
Feeding your grass with a slow-release fertiliser helps it to thrive like you wouldn’t
Use a Scotts hand-held spreader to make feeding your lawn even easier
believe. Thicker, healthier grass actually crowds out the weeds, leaving less room for them to grow. This means that regular use of Scotts Lawn Builder on your grass results in fewer weeds making it through. It’s a win-win!
“I’ll still have to reseed the bare patches though, won’t I?” Using Scotts Lawn Builder encourages a healthier root system, which really works in your favour when it comes to bare patches. Think of it this way: as you feed your grass, it gets fuller and grows outwards, which helps to fill in the bare patches in your lawn without
you needing to do anything extra. Even better, it only takes around 10 minutes to apply Scotts Lawn Builder, and one feed lasts up to three months – which gives you more time for ‘me’ time.
“Is there anything Scotts Lawn Builder can’t do for my grass?” Yep. Mow it!
THE SHOW GOES ON
Plants are gifts that keep on giving and can help you create a legacy that flourishes over time
Most of us think of family heirlooms as jewellery, fine china or antique furniture but, for many, the most meaningful keepsakes are found in the garden. Living treasures in the form of plants continue to grow and bloom, serving as lasting reminders of cherished memories and loved ones. You can start this tradition at any time by sharing plants or cuttings with friends and family, cultivating a horticultural inheritance to pass down through generations.
HAND-ME-DOWN HYDRANGEAS
Alexandra’s hydrangeas have quite the history! Her abundant plants originated in the Dee Why, NSW, home of her great-grandmother, then her grandmother took cuttings for her place in Whale Beach. “I remember as a girl walking the secret path down to the beach through dark green hydrangeas that would tower over my head, forming a lush canopy of blooms,” says Alex. Cuttings of these massive specimens retired with her grandmother to the tiny Victorian town of Towong, where – surprisingly – they thrived in the freezing winters and hot summers of the
Passed down through four generations of one family, these hydrangeas keep memories alive in the most poignant and beautiful way
Snowy Mountains high country. Seven years ago Alex had a go at propagating the plants, dipping 15 cut woody stems in hormone growth powder and sticking them in a pot for the drive back to Sydney. The next summer she planted them down the side fence of her garden, nurturing them through dry times with grey water from the kids’ baths, and with each passing season they thrived. ”I’ve added new hydrangeas, different species, on either side but they don’t seem to hold up to the tough, massive blooms of my great grandmother’s varieties,” says Alex.
CHERISHED CACTUS
Trystan has very special memories of his grandmother’s zygocactus. “She had clusters of them lining her front porch, and we used to water the hanging baskets first so the run-off would drip down and water the plants below,” says Trystan. “It means the world to me to have them – they are a living memory of grandma, who has now passed away. I’ve not been able to get them to flower as prolifically as she did, but I’m working on it!”
BELOVED BEGONIAS
While the descendant plants are not in her possession, that hasn’t stopped Emma from growing on her great-grandparents’ heirloom begonias. “The plants are at my parents’ place, but they shared a few cuttings with me,” says Emma. “The angel wing begonia cuttings took a little while to strike and establish, but they have now turned into strong plants in their own right.”
REMARKABLE ROSE
There’s a special rose in Kylie’s family, and she looks forward to inheriting it one day. “My grandfather gifted it to my grandma more than 50 years ago,” says Kylie. “Sadly, my grandpa passed away at only 55 years old, and the rose brought my grandma so much comfort. It blooms on her birthday and their anniversary.” Now cared for by Kylie’s mum, it remains a treasured family keepsake. “The rose is a testament to my family’s heritage and love,” says Kylie.

AWESOME ORCHIDS
Chloe inherited her nanna’s native orchids. “They produce beautiful flowers, both big and small, with a lovely perfume,” says Chloe. “They’re important to me as they remind me of Nanna’s cheeky nature – she used to say the orchids ‘fell into her pocket’, and we never questioned her further.” Chloe and her mum have shared the orchids between their gardens, displaying them in spots where they can be easily admired. “One of the orchids is mounted onto a fern board, but it has to hang freely on a hook, as it’s grown so big it covers both sides of the mount,” says Chloe.

Some plants are harder to propagate than others, so Bunnings Greenlife buyer Mill Wallasvaara recommends starting with easy-to-grow varieties. “Hydrangeas, succulents, geraniums and daisies are great for beginners,” she says. “There are three main types of cuttings: softwood (including leaf cuttings), semihardwood and hardwood. Each type requires different timing for best results.” Softwood cuttings, like the tender new growth of daisies and geraniums, take well in spring. Semi-hardwood cuttings, where the tips are flexible but stems have begun to harden, such as from a bay tree, are taken from late summer to autumn. Hardwood cuttings, such as from dormant roses or figs, are taken in winter, when the wood is firm and not pliable. “Always use healthy, pest-free plants and clean, sharp secateurs,” says Mill. “Dip the ends of the cuttings into rooting hormone to aid root development and plant in shallow seedling trays or pots filled with a propagation mix.” Position the containers in a warm, protected spot out of direct sunlight, and keep the mix moist. “You can use a covered propagation tray to maintain warmth and humidity, but avoid this for succulents, which prefer dry conditions,” she says. ●
Mushroom magic
Create your own crop of nutrient-rich fruiting fungi with an easy DIY kit
Aussies love eating mushrooms. From the commonly available white button to more exotic varieties, we put them in stir-fries and salads, on pizzas and in pasta sauces. They’re available in supermarkets and greengrocers, and more than 85 per cent of Australian households buy fresh mushrooms regularly; 55 per cent at least once a week*.
If you enjoy consuming mushrooms, have a go at growing your own. The benefits include top flavour and freshness and minimal wastage. You can cultivate mushies with plastic buckets and spores, but it’s a bit of a complicated process. For a harvest in as little as three to five weeks, try an all-in-one kit that requires very little space – a laundry cupboard or under the kitchen sink are top spots for spore production. It’s more of a cabinet-tocooker situation than patch to plate!
SPROUTING SUCCESS
The ideal growing temperature for mushrooms is between 20 and 25˚C, so Bianca Boman from Mr Fothergill’s suggests finding them a warm spot, even if it’s not in complete darkness. “A cupboard, under the bed, in a wardrobe or even under the stairs, where the temperature is steady and warm, should be suitable,” she says. The kit consists of two components: mushroom compost and peat casing. The compost has been inoculated with fungal mycelium, which grows and forms a network of thin, white thread-like structures – this is the vegetative structure of mushrooms. “The compost should look frosty with mycelium but, if it’s not, close the bag and box lid and leave for about a week before checking again,” advises Bianca. “Strong mycelium growth promotes successful fruiting.” Once
SAFETY FIRST
Don’t pick and eat wild mushrooms or those that pop up in the lawn or garden. Toxic and edible species can look very similar. In Australia, foraging regulations vary by state and territory, but even where allowed, authorities advise against consuming any mushrooms that haven’t been expertly identified.
the mycelium is thick, add the peat casing layer and keep the lid open. The peat casing maintains moisture and stimulates mycelium to start fruiting or producing mushrooms. “Keep the peat casing moist by spraying with water every two or three days – aim to keep it wet like a sponge, without it draining and collecting into the compost layer below,” says Bianca.
HARVEST TIME
Mushrooms will start to form after two or three weeks. “You can harvest them as small as you like, right up to about the size of golf balls,” says Bianca. “Twist each one, removing remaining stumps. You’ll get more mushrooms if you pick them as smaller buttons.” Mushroom growth may slow or stop after the first harvest, but Bianca says this is normal. “Mushrooms fruit in flushes and there can be a gap between the harvests,” she explains.
A mushroom kit typically produces for around three months and, once done, can’t be revived. “It may start to develop a rusty red colour or even mould, and should be discarded,” says Bianca. “Tip the contents into the garden or your compost bin.” ●

Social climbers
Let these native flowering beauties weave their magic in your garden
FALSE SARSAPARILLA (Hardenbergia violacea)
This robust climber and groundcover produces clusters of purple flowers from late winter into spring. It thrives in well-draining soil and prefers a spot in full sun or part shade. Known as the ‘happy wanderer’, it is ideal for clambering over and up arbours and trellises, or rambling across garden beds. Prune after flowering to keep it under control and encourage dense growth.
BOWER VINE (Pandorea jasminoides)
Also known as bower of beauty, this vigorous twining plant has glossy dark-green leaves and clusters of white or pink trumpet-shaped blooms that appear from late spring to summer. Train it to grow over a screen, fence or pergola in full sun to part shade. It grows well in most climates, but needs protection from frost.
APPLE BERRY (Billardiera scandens)
Favoured for its lovely flowers, edible fruit and non-invasive habit, this hardy native can be grown as a sprawling groundcover, climber or small shrub. It’s perfect for small spaces, as it only grows to 1.5 metres tall and 3 metres wide. In spring and summer, yellow bell-shaped flowers are followed by sweet-tasting berries. It is drought-tolerant once established.
SNAKE VINE (Hibbertia scandens)
With its twining habit and large buttercup-like flowers in late spring and summer, this vigorous climber/scrambler is a wonderful choice for filling in bare patches or as a screening plant on walls and fences. It flowers best in full sun and tolerates a range of conditions, including coastal environments. Prune after flowering – or at any time if the vines become too unruly. ●

AHEAD OF THE CURVE
An epic landscaping project paves the way to this impressive outdoor living zone
Words Artemis Gouros
BEFORE
Codey, NSW
TOP DIY TIP
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions at Bunnings. The team members can offer valuable advice on tools, materials and techniques.”
This backyard transformation is the stuff DIY dreams are made of. Homeowner Codey (Bunnings Workshop community member @codey) turned an overgrown and sloping corner of his garden into a destination. “My goal was to build an outdoor area with a fire pit for gatherings,” says Codey. “I wanted it to be practical and durable, but also visually appealing.”
BACK TO BASICS
The first step in this ambitious project was to remove excess vegetation,
weeds and debris, then Codey cut into the slope to level the ground. “This was a crucial step, as the built-in seating would also serve as a retaining wall, adding to the structural integrity,” he explains. Next, he compacted the soil to prevent future settling.
SOLID FOUNDATION
Codey dug trenches for the bench and fire pit and filled them with concrete to create a foundation for the brickwork, then added reinforcing mesh and rods to the top slab.
DURING
”I constructed the back wall in line with the rest of the seat, but creating the sloped part of the backrest was a bit more complex. I started with a row of angle-cut bricks, then laid each subsequent brick on top, filling the voids with concrete as I went,” he explains. “To maintain the correct angle, I used a template made from Corflute.”
After all that excavating, concreting and bricklaying, Codey switched hats once again to renderer.
“I watched a handy series of rendering videos on the Bunnings website, where very knowledgeable team member Glenn gave some excellent pointers. This helped a lot in forecasting what products I needed before I went shopping in store.”
PAVING PERFECTION
To avoid any drips on the new pavers, Codey decided to paint the rendered brickwork first before starting the paving process. He laid down Grunt plastic film as a weed barrier, then covered it with a layer of paving sand before laying the cobblestone-style pavers at a gentle angle. “Proper drainage is essential to prevent water pooling on the surface and potentially damaging the pavers,” he says.
The circular design did necessitate cutting pavers to fit against the curved line of the bench seat, but the extra effort was worth the spectacular results. Codey filled between the pavers with a sand and cement mixture. Once set, he applied two coats of Crommelin wet-look concrete and paving sealer to keep them looking their best for years to come.
FINISHING TOUCHES
Following all that hard yakka, Codey was ready to complete his alfresco masterpiece. He installed the metal fire pit into its custom-built home, then got to work sprucing up the surrounding landscaping.
Codey used treated pine sleepers to construct a retaining wall on one side of the new area to contain the sloping garden bed. He then filled around existing trees and shrubs with structural, low-maintenance plantings including agaves, peace lilies and cordylines, all topped off with bark mulch.
To help the fresh construction look more established in the garden, he also sprinkled grass seed to encourage more lawn growth. “A big project like this can be tough on turf, and regenerating the grass makes the paving look like it belongs,” he says.
All in, Codey spent four weeks – between work and other commitments – on this project, and is justifiably proud of his handiwork. “I was able to create a functional and attractive area that’s a great space for relaxing and entertaining.” ●

OUTSIDE INFLUENCES
’Tis the season to linger outdoors – and to update your alfresco set-up. Discover the ideas behind the latest furniture looks
Words Jane Parbury
Most of the big-picture innovations influencing our interiors, such as nature, wellness and tech, are also having an impact on outdoor furniture, accessories, lighting and even the barbecue. Here’s what’s happening in alfresco living, and how to make the newest looks work for you.
“We’re seeing an increasing demand for outdoor furniture that mirrors indoor comfort and style” Jane Wright/Bunnings trend and design manager
CREATING CONNECTIONS
Outdoor living zones are often an extension of indoor rooms, so it’s easy to see why there’s been a strong shift towards outdoor furniture that reflects the style of indoor models. “There’s a preference for clean lines, sleek profiles and minimalist aesthetics, and reference to designs of past eras that speak to ‘the good old days’ – similar to indoor furniture,” says Jane Wright, Bunnings trend and design manager. Interior-style accessories such as lamps add to the vibe. Bunnings trend and design specialist Mindy Mason says we can expect to see outdoor portable table lamps gaining popularity this summer, creating a soft, ambient glow. “These lamps are rechargeable via USB, so are convenient for outdoor dining, entertaining or simply adding ambience to a patio or garden space,” she says. Look to: Channel indoor styling with upholstered lounge settings in tactile materials that combine good looks with durability. Add pretty scatter cushions and elegant, outdoor-friendly lighting fixtures. “Solar, battery-operated and LED lanterns, table lamps, string lights and Edisonstyle bulbs will continue to trend, adding a nostalgic charm to outdoor spaces,” says Mindy.
EMBRACING NATURE
A key feature of the global focus on wellness is a recognition of the mental and physical health benefits of time spent outdoors, says Jane. “There’s a desire to connect with nature and enjoy fresh air,” she says. Materials like timber and ontrend colours in fabrics and accessories find their origin in the natural world, while prominent colours are earthy tones and naturals such as sage green, terracotta, ochre and clay, says stylist Samantha Torrisi (@ess.creative). “These colours create a calming effect in interiors and exteriors,” she says. Curves and organic shapes mimic natural forms. “This connection to nature enhances the overall outdoor experience, promoting relaxation,” explains Jane. Look to: Opt for ergonomic furniture that allows you to kick back and recharge, or annex a quiet part of the garden and stock it with a daybed and shade umbrella. Team with cushions in earth-toned hues and have a cosy throw on hand for cooler evenings. Then use lighting to extend the cocooning effect after dark, suggests Mindy. “Warm, golden glow lighting creates a soothing, intimate experience at night,” she explains. “String lights, lanterns or wall-mounted fixtures enhance the ambience.”
LIVING LARGER
As more homes are crammed into towns and cities, outdoor spaces are shrinking – and manufacturers are responding with stylish pieces to suit. “There’s a push towards outdoor furniture that is less bulky and more space-efficient, including modular designs that can be rearranged to fit different spaces,” says Samantha. Before you buy, consider your lifestyle and accessibility to your indoor rooms to decide what you’re likely to use most. For example, if your indoor dining table is close to the outdoors, garden designer Claire Talbot suggests looking at an outdoor sofa with a low coffee table for casual meals outside. “There are more activities that can be done with that sort of informal outdoor space than having another dining table,” she says. Look to: Furniture with slimline legs is perfect for smaller backyards as they allow the eye to move through the area with minimal interruption, making it feel larger. Woven materials deliver a similar light feel. Look for stackable chairs, benches that can be tucked away under tables, bar stools paired with a slimline bar table for a minimal footprint, and even compact outdoor cooking models, such as portable barbecues and smaller pizza ovens.
CONSIDERED DESIGN
Everything from the sourcing of original materials to the environmental practices of the manufacturer is becoming increasingly important. “Consumers are opting for furniture with recycled materials, responsibly sourced wood or lower-impact fabrications,” says Samantha. Pieces also need to be hard-wearing. “There’s a demand for durable materials and construction that withstands outdoor elements, and a preference for high-quality craftsmanship and longevity of furniture pieces,” says Jane. Innovative materials being used include PET fabrications made from recycled content and powdercoated metals, while colours co-exist with the environment. “Creamy beige, blonde wood and natural, undyed materials reflect timeless style, inspired by nature,” says Jane. Look to: Choose sturdy pieces of furniture that are built to last and check the manufacturer’s label for materials that include recycled content, and/or have been responsibly sourced. In lighting, hard-wired LEDs (which need the services of a licensed electrician) and solar-powered fixtures (which don’t) are the preferred choice for energy efficiency.
“Soft neutrals like shades of beige, off-white and taupe continue to dominate, offering a timeless backdrop that complements various styles”

TECH TAKEOVER
Technology is changing all the time, with smart features in outdoor furniture already on the radar, such as built-in lighting, heating systems and charging stations, says Jane Wright. The dial is shifting on the humble barbecue, too, with more technology being incorporated, according to David Hardie, Bunnings barbecue and accessories buyer. “This allows customers to link up to their phones and control certain aspects, such as temperature, from inside the house,” he explains. We’re also embracing different cooking styles, with smokers, spit roasters and pizza ovens. “One of the fastest-growing trends overseas is the ‘griddle’ flat-top
barbecue due to its versatility, large cooking area and easy-to-clean, rolled-steel cooking plate,” says David. Advances in lighting continue. “Smart outdoor lights can be controlled via smartphones or voice assistants, allowing for scheduling and remote control,” says Mindy Mason. Look to: Investigate intuitive features on barbecues to make cooking for a crowd a breeze, and consider installing a smart lighting system (with the help of a sparkie).
“Ambient dimming is a key highlight for spotlighting,” says Mindy. “The Philips Hue Lily outdoor spotlight, for example, can be controlled via a smartphone app to change colours and intensity, perfect for creating different moods.”

Bamboozled by the choice of dog leads? Here’s a quick guide to making the right selection for you and your pup. Flat, woven lead: This is the best allpurpose lead, and the nylon or leather versions generally last the longest. These are usually about a metre long – ideal for keeping your dog close when you’re walking around people or other dogs. Long-line leads: Fantastic training leads, especially when you want to teach your dog to come when called. This is the

Crabs are fascinating to watch as they busily scuttle around the shoreline. If you’re inspired to keep hermit crabs as pets, here are a few things to know.
● Creating the right ‘crabitat’ is vital. The tank needs to be kept about 30°C with 70-80 per cent humidity. Re-create a beach environment: sand, driftwood, shells,
lead to use when you have plenty of space and there’s hardly anyone in sight. Retractable leads: Best for small, light dogs you can pull back easily. Don’t rely on the lock to hold an excited dog back, or on the mechanism to pull the dog back to you, so best used in quiet areas. Stretch lead: Also known as a bungee lead, it contains shock-absorbing elastic – like a bungee cord. It is great for dogs that pull or lunge suddenly, reducing the likelihood of injury to you and your pup.
plus a couple of water bowls (fresh for drinking and saltwater for bathing).
● Even though they’re called ‘hermit’, they love company. A tank 90cm long can house up to 15 hermit crabs.
● ‘Hermit’ is a reference to the fact they don’t have a permanent shell, but hide alone in the empty shells of other creatures, moving to larger shells every 12-18 months as they grow. So you’ll need spare shells of different sizes available.

GRASS ACT
Is it possible to have a lovely lawn when you have a dog? With a bit of planning and the right grass selection, everyone can enjoy a lush carpet of green, free from bare patches. Follow these tips and insider advice.
SEGMENT SPACES
As dogs often pace or run along the same route in a backyard, particularly along a fenceline, Angie Thomas of Yates suggests erecting a temporary mesh barrier around the area to try to give the grass time to recover, or to repair bare spots with seed or rolls of turf. “Soil that has become compacted will need to be gently aerated first (using a garden fork) to promote better grass establishment,” she says. “And for dogs that like to dig, consider creating a special area that they can dig in. Try hiding toys in that spot to entice them!”
YELLOW PATCHES
Lawns can develop yellow patches from dog urine, as it contains concentrated nitrogen that causes the lawn leaves to burn. To help minimise the effects, keep the lawn well-watered – if possible, water the spot where the dog has urinated immediately afterward to dilute the
urine. Encourage your dog to drink more (so the urine is less concentrated) by providing multiple sources of fresh water. Or try Dog Rocks, mineralised rocks that go in a dog’s water bowl, which change the nitrogen levels of the dog’s urine so it won’t stain the grass as much. You could also train your dog to wee in a certain place, not anywhere on the lawn.
WHICH GRASS IS BEST?
For damaged lawns, Angie suggests running grasses, which will self-repair to fill the affected spot. Keep the lawn well-watered and feed regularly to encourage healthy green thick growth. Take note of your climate, however, as Angie says some grasses are better suited to cool or warm areas. Check out this guide.
Couch is a popular running grass with finely textured leaves and is well suited to high-wear areas. Kikuyu is suited to backyards with pets, as it withstands wear and tear and, being a running grass, can self-repair. Kikuyu grows best in full or part sun. Buffalo varieties such as Sapphire, Palmetto and Sir Walter are hardwearing and their runners help to repair bare patches that might be created by dogs.
Zoysia is best suited to warmer areas and its deep root system and runners make it a durable choice. ●
Face value
Check out these simple ideas to layer a bland build with character and charm
Words Shelley Tustin
From the inherent charm of a period home to the wow factor of a well-crafted contemporary build, some homes look inviting and some… well, don’t. If your home is a bit of a blank box, there’s plenty you can do to add character without having to resort to a wrecking ball. Check out these visual tricks for adding appealing details to a featureless facade.
BRUSH STROKES
A fresh coat of paint looks great, but the same colour used all over can make even the cutest cottage look dull. Instead, consider using contrasting colours to draw an expressive face over your home’s facade – try inverting the usual colour scheme by substituting white for a deeper hue on windows and trims.
A contrasting front door colour is an easy and cost-effective way to create a fascinating focal point. Dulux colour expert Andrea LucenaOrr believes an interesting front door can be one of the warmest greetings to guests arriving at your home. “But it is entirely up to you how bold or subtle you choose to go with this colour,” Andrea says. “It can reflect the homeowner’s personality and really add to the overall street appeal.”
SENSE OF ARRIVAL
Give guests interesting features to attract their attention as they approach the entrance. Make the most of the front porch by tiling it with beautiful pavers, repainting or staining timber decking, or adding life to old pavers with a coat of paving paint – add a pretty stencil for extra flair!
Dress the entrance for success with accessories. Frame a formless front door with tall planters or a duo of charming carriage lights. Create a playful moment on the porch with a bench or hanging egg chair.
WINDOW DRESSING
Like eyes in a face, windows are often the most expressive part of a home’s exterior. But if your windows are featureless rectangles, flush with the facade, there’s plenty you can do to add that missing layer of interest.
coastal charm
Depending on the size and shape of your windows, hinged exterior shutters can be an achievable addition, bringing a new level of personality to a home while also helping to control light, heat and privacy. Fabric awnings are another easy retrofit – for example, a black-and-white striped awning that offers practical charm. On the inside of windows, consider plantation shutters, which give a home Hamptons style and, when used on all front-facing windows, can transform the look of the exterior.
GLAD TO BE CLAD
If cladding is dating your home in the worst possible way, it may be possible to swap it for a more contemporary option (but first check with your local authority if approval is needed or heritage restrictions apply).

To retrofit cladding over other lightweight cladded walls, Jorge Paz from James Hardie advises removing the old to expose the framing, rather than covering the existing walls. This is because new panels can’t be fixed directly over the existing cladding, and the old lightweight cladding may negatively affect the performance of the new exterior cladding.
“The exposed frame must be inspected for suitability. If needed, new sarking should be installed over the frame, then the new exterior cladding installed,” Jorge recommends.
There are cladding solutions to update old or tired brick exteriors, too, he says. To retrofit a masonry home, he recommends installing Hardie Wrap weather barrier over the masonry wall before battening out with a cavity system.
Whatever type of exterior your home has, the biggest challenge will be choosing a style of cladding. To create a modern, minimalist aesthetic, Jorge suggests a product like Hardie ‘Fine Texture’ cladding, which has a smooth, natural, sandlike texture and a fine matt finish. If beach chic is more your style, the deep shadows of ‘Linea’ weatherboards offer clean, horizontal lines for a contemporary coastal look.

FREE CLIMB
Don’t underestimate the power of landscaping – plants can hide all manner of architectural sins! Self-clinging climbers use roots or adhesive pads to attach themselves to a wall, says horticulturist Tammy Huynh. “However frequent trimming will be needed to keep them from covering windows, eaves or gutters,” she warns. While self-clinging climbers are good for when a support structure isn’t possible, be prepared for them to be permanent – and removal may damage painted or rendered surfaces. Alternatively, consider training climbers up support structures like tension wire. “This keeps them off the facade but still adds character to the home,” says Tammy. She suggests training Madagascar jasmine or star jasmine to grow up tension wire strung between two bolts secured to the surface. “Run a few at different lengths to create interest, or cross them over in a diamond feature,” she says.
Woody vines like wisteria or grape need a sturdier support, but could be grown up a pergola or similar structure, positioned to draw attention from the street. Check with your local authority if you need planning or building approval before erecting any new structure.
HIDE AND REVEAL
Use plants to practise the art of distraction. Strategically placed topiary lends a formal touch, while a statement tree can be your front yard’s defining feature. Choose a deciduous variety for seasonal flair, from blossoms in spring and autumn leaves, to bare winter branches that throw interesting shadows on the walls. “Consider ornamental grasses too, like miscanthus,” suggests Tammy. “They sway with the slightest breeze, offering movement and a sense of dynamism, giving life to a bland building.”
While flowering perennials such as Mexican sage and hydrangeas are fabulous planted en masse, think about planting them with interesting evergreens, like buxus balls. “This can help carry the display through the seasons, especially once flowers fade or plants die down for winter,” says Tammy. ●
BELOW Dakaflash is a flashing solution that works to keep rooflines and penetrations such as chimneys watertight
FIXED IN A FLASH
Learn how to deal with common roofing problems and stop leaks in their tracks with Wakaflex, Dakaflash, Smartform and Fastfix Wet Shield roof flashings and waterproofing products
If you’ve ever had a leak in your roof, you’ll know how much of a hassle it can be to fix. Water has a habit of getting through almost any barrier you can put in its way, and the professionals aren’t always available to do the job for you. That’s why DIY-friendly solutions like Wakaflex, Dakaflash, Smartform and Fastfix Wet Shield were created. Here, we’ll show you when and how to use these handy waterproofing products, so that the next time the rain falls, it stays outside where it belongs.
Flashing fail
When existing roof flashings fail they need to be replaced quickly, and Wakaflex lead-free extruded rubber flexible flashing is your best bet.
Two butyl strips run along the roll for adhesion, making it easy for DIYers to install, while an internal aluminium mesh makes it malleable enough to provide a smooth finish on common roof surfaces. For a more affordable – but just as effective – solution, Dakaflash can be used under existing flashings to shore up problem areas. With 30 per cent stretch and a fully self-adhesive backing, this composite laminate lead-free flashing is great to use in tricky areas such as around chimneys to ensure a longlasting, watertight seal. It’s suitable for metal roofs, tiles and polycarbonate too.
Leaky gutters
Rainwater leaking from gutters can damage the walls of your home and
potentially compromise its foundation. Fix larger holes and cracks quickly by lining your gutters with Smartform allpurpose repair tape. This self-adhesive, butyl-backed flashing with 60 per cent stretch is ideal when the utmost flexibility is required, like on extreme roof profiles such as KLIP-LOK metal roofing sheets. However if the damage to your gutters is minor, you can easily patch smaller cracks with Fastfix Wet Shield roof repair compound. This one-coat instant waterproofing membrane can be applied even in wet conditions, and on sound porous surfaces it doesn’t need a primer. It’s resin-based and fibre-reinforced for strength, flexibility and durability, offering a super-simple waterproofing solution.
Roof repairs
Fastfix Wet Shield is also the best choice for repairing and waterproofing your roof when rust, cracks, holes and punctures start to compromise its watertightness. Suitable for all common roofing surfaces, this simple paint-on solution is instantly waterproof and can even be applied in the rain, so it’s perfect in leaky emergencies. If a small area of rust on your metal roof has compromised its watertightness, clear off any loose particles and paint Fastfix Wet Shield over the top to keep water out and protect your home from water damage and drips. Rusted screws
and cracked tiles can also receive the same treatment quickly and easily. If a larger area of rust has created a bigger hole in the roof, you may need to patch it with a section of Smartform repair tape first, then seal the edges with Fastfix Wet Shield.
For punctures and holes in your roof’s surface, a repair patch will work best to restore watertightness. For tile roofs, use a 1m Dakaflash patch, while for metal roofs you’ll need a 1m Smartform patch to fix damage and keep your home dry and structurally sound.
The flexibility of Smartform repair tape makes DIY roof waterproofing a much easier task

POWER OF THE SUN
A surfeit of the bright stuff makes Australia the lucky country for solar-powered devices
Words Shelley Tustin
Has your power bill grown a digit? Harnessing the power of the sun might help. The range of solar-powered products is impressive and growing, and each one operates without tapping into the grid, meaning they’ll save you coin and won’t require a licensed tradie to install. Here are six solar-powered products that will take you one step closer to off-grid living.
LIT GARDEN
Outdoor lights are a great introduction to solar-powered tech and one of the most practical applications for DIYers, allowing you to illuminate the darkest parts of the garden (or anywhere grid connection is problematic), without the expense or hassle of cables. Solarpowered doesn’t mean low-tech either, with loads of cool functions available
off-grid. Jane Troiano of Arlec says their solar sensor lights offer the same motion-detecting functionality as hardwired lights, with basic timer adjustments for light duration. There’s smart tech available too: Cole & Bright ‘Linkable’ lights use bluetooth technology to connect lights – one security light triggers a chain of lights for a safer, better-lit home.

● Swann ‘MaxRanger4K’ solar wireless security system, $949/pack of 2, I/N: 0562007
Solar-powered security cameras are truly wireless so are easy to install and can be placed anywhere there is sun
Skylights are great for bringing light into dark rooms, but modern technology harnesses the power of the sun even further! Solar skylights use a solar panel to power the control system, giving you a remote-operable unit with rain sensor, without connecting to the mains.
Illume’s skylight alternative is a fantastic solution for gloomy spaces, functioning like a skylight but without the need for a light shaft or a hole in your roof. It connects to a solar panel on the roof and simulates the light conditions outside – brighter when the sun is shining, dimmer when it’s cloudy and lightless at night.
AT THE GATE
Electric gates keep your home secure, while allowing you to open and close them via remote control – so no need to get out of the car in the rain! By utilising solar technology at the fence line to power the gate, you can avoid the cost of running cables the full length of your property. Some systems, such as the sliding and swing electric gate openers by Richmond, are compatible with solar power, perfect for when your gate is a fair distance from the house.
Solar power can also help to ensure you never miss another delivery after dark, with a lit-up letterbox! A discreet solar panel on the letterbox powers an LED light, which switches on after dark, illuminating the house number.
RINSE CYCLE
Getting out of a nice heated pool and rinsing off under an ice-cold
shower is a punishment you don’t need. An outdoor solar shower plugs into the hose and uses the sun to heat water up to 40 degrees Celsius, with larger models able to heat up to 35 litres – perfect for post-swim rinses, yard clean-ups or hosing down the dog.
For a warm shower on the go, camp showers simply heat water in a bag, giving you a civilised wash in the wild.
TIME IT RIGHT
Solar-powered devices can help to take care of your garden watering needs, too. A solar-powered pump will use the sun to keep your water features ticking along and solar tap timers allow you to switch on irrigation at optimum times, without an early morning alarm call.
FOR BEST RESULTS…
The primary limitation of solarpowered devices is obvious.
“They are weather-dependent, relying on sunlight for battery charging, which in areas with frequent cloudy days or limited sunlight hours can lead to reduced performance or shorter operating times,” says Jane Troiano. For optimal operation, position them in sunlit areas without shading or obstructions. Jane also suggests keeping an eye on the battery, which may degrade in extreme temperatures and need periodic replacement; and carrying out regular maintenance, such as panel cleaning. ●

ALL DECKED OUT!
Here’s what you need to build your dream deck from the ground up
Words Mitchell Mclean
There are plenty of reasons why decks are so popular in Aussie homes. Timeless and versatile, they’re an outdoor-living hero. You can have one up high or down low, off the back door or at the end of the garden – size and style is up to you. If a deck is top of your landscape wish list, check out this guide to the basics of building a platform – you may find going DIY is easier than you think.
LAY THE FOUNDATION
It’s important to have a solid foundation for your deck to ensure its stability and longevity. Traditional concrete footings provide a robust and sturdy base, and are ideal for
larger decks or areas with unstable soil. This method involves digging holes, pouring concrete and setting posts, which can be labour intensive, but ensures excellent support. Alternatively, instant footings, such as screw piles or deck blocks, offer a faster and easier installation process. They are suitable for smaller decks and less complex builds, and can be adjusted for uneven ground, making them a practical solution for many sites.
IN THE FRAME
The framework of your deck supports the decking boards and is essential for overall strength. Constructing the frame yourself with bearers and
joists allows you to customise the design, but does require a certain comfort level with cutting timber using a power saw. Conversely, a modular framing system, which comes with precut and predrilled
GOOD SAVE!
● Be budget friendly and, where possible, use recycled materials such as reclaimed timber to build the frame.
● To minimise wastage, plan the size and layout of your deck with the board dimensions in mind, measure accurately – twice, to cut once – and buy materials in bulk.
components, greatly simplifies the job. While potentially more expensive, these systems make the building process quicker and more accessible for lessexperienced DIYers, reducing the likelihood of errors and ensuring a precise fit.
TREAD THE BOARDS
When selecting decking boards, you can opt for timber or composite. Timber, such as treated pine and preoiled merbau, offers a classic, warm look and can be more cost-effective initially. Timber is favoured for its natural beauty and strength, but it requires regular maintenance, including staining and sealing, to prevent rot and weather damage. On the other hand, composite decking, such as the Ekodeck Designer Series, is made from a blend of wood fibres and plastic, offering superior durability with minimal upkeep. Composite boards won’t splinter, warp or rot, and they come in a variety of colours and textures that mimic natural timber. Although the upfront cost of composite decking can be higher, its long-term benefits include reduced maintenance costs and increased longevity. ●
Keep
in mind…
■ Prior to excavating, lodge an online inquiry with Before You Dig Australia (byda.com.au) to check the location of underground pipes, cables and utilities. Also, check with your local council to see if you need a permit to build a deck.
■ When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear (such as eye and ear protection, gloves and mask).

Crafting timber decks and other structures requires time and effort. Protect your hard work with the new finishing oils and stains from Sikkens
Cracks, dirt and UV fading can wreak havoc on exterior timber. If you’ve invested time in building a deck, pergola, planter or other structure, you’ll need to seal the surface quickly.
The new range of professional-grade Cetol timber-finishing stains and oils from Sikkens is ideal to seal timber decks, cladding, screens and more to maintain their beauty and integrity.
Cetol Deck Ultra is an easy-to-use stain that has no need for a base coat. This cuts down on prep and application times – a bonus whether you’re doing the job for yourself or a client. Cetol Deck Ultra can be brushed straight onto clean, bare timber to nourish, seal, colour and protect it from the elements, and has a durable satin finish.
Upon application, Cetol Deck Ultra creates a highly translucent film over

If you’re after an even more natural look without any sheen, Cetol BL Natural Decking Oil is the only two hour re-coat matt-finish, water-based decking oil on the market. This ‘barely there’ coating is designed to accentuate the visual softness of timber and let its natural aesthetic shine. The oil penetrates deeply into timber to help ward off the effects of the elements, while the quick-drying formula makes application a speedier process.
For the traditionalists, Cetol Premium Timber Oil gets back to basics. This decking oil is not film-forming, meaning that it highlights the natural character of the timber without masking any of its beauty, for a highly elegant result.

SUPERIOR EXTERIORS
Create the look of luxury for your home with eye-catching decks, fences, screens and cladding that last a lifetime
If your Pinterest board is packed with timber decks, fences and cladding, but you aren’t as enamoured by the upkeep that goes along with the finish, timber-look aluminium products from DECO could be the perfect solution. Durable, stylish and low maintenance, they’re made to withstand the elements, so you can spend more of your time enjoying your outdoor space. Here’s how to bring high-end contemporary design to your home.
Fences and screens
Create a unique, attractive feature to surround and accent different areas of your home with DECO’s fencing and screening product, DecoBatten®. Made from aluminium, it’s a dimensionally stable product that will never warp, twist or crack. This means it’s easy to work with, and suitable as a DIY project. All you’ll need is a fine-toothed metal saw blade to cut pieces to length. The DecoBattens are light, especially when compared to hardwood battens, so DIYing can be done by a single person with basic construction skills.
DESIGN TIP
Narrow upright battens can fashion a luxurious-looking accent wall behind an outdoor shower, or form a unique screen over front-facing windows and balconies, maintaining your family’s privacy with an interesting design feature.
Decking and paths
One of the easiest ways to add a touch of luxury to your backyard is with a stylish deck or garden path. Designed and made in Australia to suit Australian conditions, DecoDeck® boards look like real timber but are actually hollow lengths of aluminium, finished with a highly durable powder coating. This re-creates the beauty of a variety of timber species, with the benefit of never needing to be sealed, stained or painted like other decking materials. The tough coating and sturdy construction outlast timber, all while blending beautifully into the landscape. With narrow and wide boards, both available in 6.5m lengths, it’s easy to achieve a seamless look for your deck or balcony. The hollow boards connect neatly between joists using the smart DecoDeck joiner, reducing waste and making your project more economical and eco-friendly.
Use DecoDeck to create a walkway between different areas of your yard, connecting spaces like a deck and a fire pit while adding an attractive element
Cladding, ceilings and
more Timber cladding gives a wonderfully soft, warm look to any exterior, but it does have downsides. Along with ongoing maintenance – sanding, oiling and so on – it can also pose a risk in bushfire-prone areas. Using DecoClad® gives you the look of timber to add interest and create contemporary style for the exterior of your home, but the material is completely non-combustible and can be used in bushfire zones up to BAL FZ, to help keep your home safer. Like other DECO products, DecoClad is made to withstand the extremities of the Australian climate, to keep your home looking fantastic for the long term, without any extra effort required.
DESIGN TIP
A number of styles are available in DecoClad, from V-groove and traditional weatherboards, to more contemporary shadowline features. Use cladding horizontally to bring points of interest into outdoor kitchens, or vertically to enliven gable ends. You can also line ceilings and soffits – the underside of your eaves – with cladding to suit your style, allowing you to achieve the design feature you’ve been dreaming of.
DESIGN TIP
DecoDeck is a great option for pool surrounds. DecoDeck aluminium boards stay cool underfoot, even on the hottest summer days, thanks to aluminium’s thermal properties. Plus, with a non-slip coating, they’re comfortable as well as safe to walk on, even when wet.

Achieve the best finish for painting projects with the right Scotch masking tape for your surface
There’s no better way to enhance your home’s aesthetic than with a fresh coat of paint, but hiring a painter isn’t always in the budget. With the right masking tape for your surface it’s easy to get a professional finish even when doing the work yourself.
For smooth surfaces
If you’re working on smooth plasterboard walls, masking off areas of trim or painting tiles, glass or even metal, ScotchBlue Original Masking Tape can help you get crisp, clean lines as you paint. It stays in place for up to 14 days without leaving any residue, so you can take the time to get the job done right.
For larger areas
To protect deeper skirting boards, furniture and floors from paint splatter while you work, ScotchBlue Pre-taped Masking Film is an easy solution that’s conveniently pre-taped with Scotch Original Painter’s Tape. Suitable for most surfaces, it has a wider coverage than masking tape to protect larger areas. An inbuilt cutting mechanism in the dispenser makes this film even easier to use, and it can also stay in place for up to 14 days while you work.
ScotchBlue Sharp Lines Masking Tape can help you to create clearly defined accent walls on multiple surfaces, including plasterboard, wood, trim, glass and tiles. Its Edge-Lock™ technology helps to eliminate bleedthrough and ensure the crispness of your design. Remove this tape within 21 days of application to ensure no sticky residue is left behind.
For rough exteriors
Painting your home’s exterior is easier too, even when working on textured surfaces like concrete, brick, render and rough wood. All you need is Scotch Rough Surface Masking Tape and proper preparation, and you’ll be amazed at the neat lines and clean finish you can achieve. When using outdoors, this tape should be removed within three days.
If working on recently painted walls, wood floors, veneers and cabinets, use Scotch Delicate Surface Masking Tape. It features a gentler adhesive that will even work on wallpaper without causing damage. This tape is ideal for creating accent walls with decorative stripes or patterns and, with clean removal for up to 60 days, you will really have time to work your creative magic.
For all painting projects
Also suitable for use on plasterboard, wooden architraves and skirting boards, windows and tiles, Scotch General Painting Masking Tape can give you excellent definition for your interior painted surfaces. It’s best to take this tape off your painted surface within eight days to ensure clean removal.

Take care when selecting your plants as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and check suitability of plants for your region as some may be classified as weeds in certain states and territories. Ensure your panel’s slats can hold the weight of filled planters. *Project cost does not include posts or fixings, plants or potting mix, is based on the prices of materials purchased at Alexandria, NSW, store and is correct at time of printing.

GO GREEN ON THE SCREEN
Balcony planters are designed to go over railings but work well on slatted screens, too. Look for lightweight plastic styles and use them for annual colour or herbs, just choose plants that are happy with lots of sun if your nook is out in the open. Hang the planters from the top of the screen but make sure there is enough clearance for your head when you stand up from the bench, and lift them down for watering.

Keep in mind...
■ When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear (such as gloves, mask, and eye and ear protection), follow the manufacturer’s instructions and work in a well-ventilated area.
■ Wear gloves and a mask when handling mulch, compost and potting mix.
■ Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

THINK INSIDE THE BOX
Choose a folding table and chairs, like this timber bistro setting, so you can pack it away to save space when not in use. This three-piece set fits in the storage box with room to spare for the outdoor cushions and bench seat pads. The weatherproof box protects the items from the elements.
