As the growing season kicks off, now is the time to invest in pot plants. Liven up your outdoor entertaining space with colourful flowering plants and new-season pots. Flowers like sun-loving geraniums or dwarf dahlias will bring a splash of colour. And peace lilies are a great choice for brightening up shaded areas. Do your research to make sure the pot size and type is a good fit for the plant (for instance, most annuals go well in window boxes, while hydrangeas need larger pots).

In warm climates, it’s time to dethatch, aerate and top-dress the lawn. Follow up with a quality lawn fertiliser. If there are any bare patches, repair with lawn seed. In cooler areas, hold off until the weather warms.
Look out for larvae of codling moth on pear, apple and quince trees, and spray with a suitable insecticide. Act quickly, before they bore into the fruit.
Get planting! In most areas, it’s time to sow beans, chillies, tomatoes, cucumber, pumpkin, basil, sage, parsley and edible flowers (see below). Improve the soil with compost and apply mulch once seedlings emerge.
NASTURTIUM
With a delicate texture and peppery notes, the red or orange flowers are a delightful addition to salads.
Protect fruiting plants and trees against fruit fly with baits and sprays. Hang preventative baits around garden beds and apply a suitable insecticide to stems and branches.
Not sure what to do with your used plant pots? Selected Bunnings stores throughout Australia now collect used plastic plant pots and stakes made from polypropylene (PP5) for recycling, saving them from landfill. Collected pots can be recycled into items such as new pots, or taken for reuse by customers. Drop off unwanted pots (soil-free and rinsed) to participating stores in Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, Queensland and Western Australia‡

It was a tough call for this year’s judges to choose their favourites from the inspirational, budget-savvy and, in our new ‘community project’ category, heartwarming #DIYJuly entries. But here they are – and you can see more amazing projects and home improvements from our creative, can-do readers in future issues, plus view them all via workshop. bunnings.com.au/DIYJuly.
Repurposing a vintage cabinet gave this bathroom a large, budget-friendly vanity. The project was multi-step: old varnish was removed with oven cleaner, then the sanded timber bleached and finished with Feast Watson Liming White. For added stability, a back leg was moved centre front (and leftover pine added for support at the rear). The timber top was replaced with a more practical choice for a wet zone – a secondhand piece of quartz, which was deeper than the cabinet. “This worked out well as it left a void behind the cabinet for the pipes, which saved us from losing several drawers,” Claire explains. She also made the drawer pulls from dowel and copper plumbing tees, painted in Dulux Metalshield in Hammered Bronze.

“YOU’RE MORE CREATIVE THAN YOU THINK AND, LIKE ANY OTHER SKILL YOU LEARN, THE MORE YOU TRY NEW THINGS, THE BETTER YOU WILL GET” – CLAIRE
“A true marvel! They’ve combined upcycled materials to create an exquisite – and useful – piece”
Mitch Mclean, Bunnings Workshop Community
“Upcycling is a way to add quality to your home on a budget,” says Claire (Workshop member @Renowayoflife)
Our judges loved how Claire and Deon’s project turned a problematic area into a tranquil view. “Our vision was a modern Japanese garden courtyard, with a simple, pared-back garden that invites contemplation,” says Claire. They removed old rotted pergola timbers, spray-painted the window frames and clad the brick walls with James Hardie ‘Axon’ fibre cement. Greenery and sculptural elements then transformed the space: old bricks were replaced with garden soil and mulch, then edged with black pebbles, and a potted Japanese maple positioned centrestage, near plants and organic-shaped pavers. “We enjoy the view of our courtyard from inside the house and our children love to explore the garden and jump across the stepping stones,” says Claire.
“We love the way this space looks at all times, but especially at night, when a new outdoor light casts a gorgeous glow,” say Claire and Deon (Workshop member @Homeforeverhome)
“This is a really clever makeover of a plain and unused space that’s now a delight to look out on”
Lisa Green, Bunnings magazine
This warm and welcoming kitchen is a far cry from its dark and dated origins, which had limited room for food preparation. Helena’s aim was to “create a lighter, larger space that flowed and allowed my hubby and I to cook together, making good food for our family!” With an eye on the budget, Helena did much of the work – she removed tiles and demolished cabinets, reinvented wall cabinets as open shelves with paint and moulding, tiled the splashback with Decor8 ‘Barcelona’ tiles and, with some help, clad the rangehood and limewashed it. The result is light, open and far more functional.
Simple ideas can be the most effective, and our judges adored this timber side table, inspired by a laminated hevea panel offcut. DIYer Samantha devised a crosslegged construction: three pieces of timber were cut, sanded and sealed with Cabot’s Cabothane Clear, slots were cut in the two leg pieces so they slid together, then the top fixed on with Selleys Hold Up glue. “The key was precision,” she says. “The slots were measured carefully, cut with a jigsaw and tidied by hand with a chisel for a perfect finish.”
“My aim was to create a DIY project that could be completed in an hour. Mission accomplished!” says Samantha (Workshop member @Sammilne)
“The best bit about my new kitchen is the satisfaction of doing it myself,” says Helena (Workshop member @Helsbren)

A brand-new laundry with ‘aged’ charm was the goal for Kendall and her family – and the result shows how modern functionality can be combined with layers of character. They chose a Mediterranean farmhouse look to replace the old, early 90s laundry, installing Kaboodle ‘Alpine’ profile cabinets in Macaroon, a Think Timber European oak benchtop, VJ panelling above the bench, reclaimed European roof tiles on the floor and a new glazed entrance door. “The brass tones of the hardware add to the aged ‘feel’ of the space – making it a lovely spot for the dreaded task of washing!” Kendall says. The judges loved the style of this laundry, noting the inclusions that make it both a beautiful and workable space for a young family. “We wanted more bench space, more light and connection with the outside of the property, room for a dryer and also a hanging rod for drying school uniforms,” says Kendall.
“Selling the old laundry on Facebook Marketplace helped to pay for some of the renovation materials, such as paint and skirting,” says Kendall (Workshop member @Kendallmac)
“This is a wonderful renovation that’s extremely creative with the tiled floor and brass finishes but very functional as well”
Kathy Casha, 3M

“First I asked the women’s shelter what was required, then collected furniture, homewares, artworks, pots and plants,” says Jemma (Workshop member @Jemma11)
This is a new category for DIY July, inspired by the way we’ve seen Workshop members use their DIY skills to lend a helping hand or raise a smile in their communities. Jemma’s upcycling project for a local women’s shelter epitomises this outstanding generosity of spirit. Her epic project involved doing a community call-out for needed items, collecting 101 pieces of furniture and homewares, then organising a working bee to upcycle them into useful and joyously colourful pieces. “I learned that my community really wants to help,” says Jemma. “The response was almost overwhelming!” The colour and design scheme was based on trauma-informed design principles (soft colour and shapes inspired by nature), with a goal to “hopefully elevate the mood of women who may be experiencing trauma,” she says.
“This is a great initiative and a wonderful way to enhance a space and add a bit of cheer. Each piece is now a thing of beauty and the colours used are perfect”
Shirley Platcher, British Paints

During a larger renovation of her seven-year-old son’s room, Amy created this feature wall and reading nook. There are many layers to the project, from the wall-mounted Clever Cube units, which frame the area and add storage without taking floor space, to the wainscoting Amy made using MDF and Selleys Liquid Nails. But it was the use of colour that won our judges’ hearts – the hue (British Paints Vintage Denim) marries beautifully with the feature wallpaper used above the dado rail, while giving the room a feeling of tranquillity ideal for reading, sleeping and playing. Shirley Platcher of British Paints says it’s a beautiful transformation and a well-thought-out use of space: “The reading nook provides a perfect setting for children to embark on their reading adventures, and the muted paint colours create a calm inviting scene.”
“From a few options, my son chose this muted mid-toned blue that’s mature enough to grow with him,” says Amy (Workshop member @TheSparrowHome)
“This shows how colour and paint can transform a simple, neutral bedroom into an inspiring, tranquil space with a personal, emotional connection”
Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux

Give an affordable, plain chair cushion a posh upcycle with this classic technique
1 Measure and mark where the buttons will sit with chalk on both sides of the cushion cover Tip: It’s easiest to do this without the cushion insert in the cover.
2 Push the insert into the cushion cover, fluffing to ensure it is evenly distributed into the corners and edges.
3 Thread a long darning needle with a forearm’s length of extra-strong thread, loop through the holes of a front button and tie the end of the thread at the back of the button with a firm knot.
4 Feed the needle through the top left chalk marks on the front and back of the cushion, pull the thread taut, then loop through the holes of a back button.
5 Feed the needle back through the holes of the front button, pull taut again, then repeat twice more before stitching and knotting the thread behind the button, trimming the excess with scissors
6 Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the bottom right, top right, then bottom left chalk marks and buttons. Tip: Working diagonally helps to ensure an even result.

Natural tones evoke a sense of tranquillity and Edamame, a wonderful, muted green, is no exception. Pair it with timber or stone-look benchtops, or team with cabinetry in dark brown Walnut to introduce cosiness and texture. Go handle-less and keep surfaces clear to enhance the clean, minimalist feel.
“The earthy, clay tones of Tagine will encourage reflection and wonderment, creating a truly engaging environment,” explains Jono. Perfect for a relaxed, retro-inspired look, try it with textured timber, stone-look benchtops and matt black hardware.

Like your first swim after winter, those initial forays into the backyard in spring can be a bit challenging. But with longer, milder days in store, now is the time for action, and there are loads of simple things you can do to get your outdoor zones primped and ready for action.
Transform outdoor gatherings with a dedicated zone – perhaps a fire pit* and benches for casual get-togethers, or a dining table and chairs for a more formal approach. Choose a spot not too far from your kitchen or barbecue area, but not too close to avoid smoke drifting over your guests. Define the area with decking or pavers and a pergola – or even a solar LED cantilever umbrella – and give it a sense of enclosure by placing it in a corner or by adding screening on two or three sides. Position lighting for both atmosphere and extended time in the garden.
The easiest way to refresh any space in or around the home is to clean it. Get rid of cobwebs on walls and gutters with a cobweb brush, give every area a good sweep, then grab a power washer to deal with stubborn dirt such as mould, moss and algae on the deck and paved areas. Just make sure you use the right wand and pressure for the task to avoid damaging softer timbers and paint work.
Wipe outdoor furniture with a damp cloth and mild detergent, using a proprietary cleaner to tackle stubborn marks and stains if necessary. If your pieces are still looking worse for wear, you may have to take more drastic action, such as oiling dried-out natural wicker, or sanding back timber furniture and refinishing it with oil or varnish. For rusted items, try sanding off the rust or use a rust converter, then apply a metal primer and paint. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, for both success and safety.
Check for wood rot and loose or damaged boards and, if you can access them easily, inspect joists and supports for obvious signs of damage. If the surfaces are simply suffering from weathering, a spruce up with deck cleaner and new oil works wonders, and is a relatively simple DIY task. But for anything beyond your skills – such as replacing boards or repairing structural elements – call in the experts.
Removing weeds from a garden bed is a simple way to make it look tidy, says horticulturist Chloe Thomson (@beantheredugthat). “And once you’ve weeded, cover the area with a fresh layer of mulch,” she adds. Cut back overgrown plants, remove dead ones and look for replacements based on what’s growing well in the area, Chloe suggests. Plus, “If you need an instant pop of colour, mass plant annuals in clusters along the front of a garden bed, or pop them into decorative pots and use them as focal points.”
Growing your own herbs will not only save you money at the supermarket, but they look good in the garden, too. According to horticulturist Tammy Huynh (leafanimpression.com.au), you can squeeze in a herb bed just about anywhere – or grow them in planters – but it’s a good idea to keep herbs close to the house for easy access. “Choose herbs you regularly use and group them together if they have similar sun and water requirements, like chives, basil, parsley and dill,” says Tammy. But, she adds, “Always give mint and rosemary their own pots, as they like to spread and will eventually take over the garden bed!”
“Choose plants that will suit your climate and the available light and soil type”

Make
Recoating your exterior timber – be that the deck, outdoor furniture, fences or the front door – is an essential but not very exciting task. So when you do it, you want the job to be quick, straightforward and to deliver fantastic, long-lasting results. That’s exactly what you get when you pick up a can of Sikkens Cetol® BLX-Pro
Sikkens’ excellent oil-based products, with their authentic-looking wood tones, have long been the professionals’ go-to for a first-class, durable timber coating. The water-based BLX-Pro range gives you the same natural-looking effect, but with easier application, faster recoat and drying times, and simpler clean-up. It’s as perfect for weekend DIY-ers as it is for tradies needing a speedy, high-quality result.
For a top-grade finish, Sikkens recommends three coats – BLX-Pro is
recoatable in just two hours, letting you power through the whole job in a day. Use BLX-Pro to refresh just about any exterior timber surface, or to coat new, bare wood. It delivers a translucent, satin finish that reveals rather than conceals the wood grain, enhancing its natural beauty.
There is already a comprehensive selection of BLX-Pro colours, from Light Oak and Pine to deeper tones such as Dark Oak, Walnut and Teak. Now, with three new shades joining the range, you can have virtually any look you want. BLX-Pro in the colour Natural has a very light pigment for an on-trend, beautifully natural finish. At the other end of the colour spectrum, you’ll find Mahogany, in all its richness and warmth, and dramatic Ebony, perfect for bringing a chic, contemporary note to your outdoor zones. With Sikkens’ Cetol® BLX-Pro range, sprucing up your outdoor surfaces couldn’t be easier.

Bring beauty to a bland backyard with a striking feature. “Try a decorative pot planted with colourful annuals, such as violas or cineraria or, for a more permanent display, go for a feature tree, such as citrus, magnolia or dwarf crepe myrtle,” suggests Tammy Huynh. “Burying the legs of a garden arch in large pots – filled with potting mix and topped with flowering annuals – and training a climber like star jasmine or native hardenbergia also makes for a lovely garden feature. Position a bench or table and chairs nearby to turn it into a destination spot.”
Lighting can bring a sparkling new look to your space for balmy evenings – and it needn’t add to your energy bill. “Solar lights all the way!” says Chloe. “I love outdoor lights with a warm white glow – it’s softer and more welcoming than bluish white light. Strings of festoon lights always look amazing looped around outdoor dining or entertaining spaces, and they cast a surprising amount of light. Solar path lights are a must for safety. Use the ones on spikes to illuminate paths or steps where you can, or look for ones that will mount onto a hard surface.” 10
Disguise an ugly area or enhance privacy with a screen. “I love rusted corten steel screening,” says Chloe Thomson. “It looks great instantly, and because of the rusted style it never looks brand new, even if you put it in yesterday.” Recycled plastic is another option, as is traditional timber lattice. Pair it with climbers to lift your greenery quota. Alternatively, fill a row of trough planters with tall-growing plants or climbers. “If you have a support structure like a wire fence, my favourite fast-climbers are hardenbergia and pandorea. Or try fast, tall growing plants like clumping bamboo, viburnum or red cottonwood.”
ABOVE For an instant spruce up, trim and tidy any wayward plants that are blocking paths or access points
Refresh your space with a few well-chosen pieces. New seat pads and/or scatter cushions will breathe life into your outdoor lounge furniture, while you can distract the eye from a tired setting with pretty pots or ornaments. In an enclosed alfresco area, repurpose a decorative garden screen as wall art, or invest in a stylish outdoor mirror. String a hammock nearby for a resort feel, and pop solar lanterns around the area for after-dark ambience.
Keep in mind...
n Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
n Wear gloves and a mask when handling potting mix, mulch or compost.
n Make sure any lighting used outside is suitable for outdoors. Any hardwired electrical fixtures must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Short on time but long on good intentions? You can still have the clean home you want! The key is embracing different levels of clean. Vileda has turned this concept into an artform with its range of innovative mop systems that cover all your cleaning needs. Who says you only need one mop!
Not every spill or mess justifies a time-consuming clean, but the ProMist Max Plus spray mop helps you have clean floors all the time, with minimal effort. With the water tank filled, it’s ready to grab and go – simply spray and mop! The microfibre pad is double-sided, so you can cover a greater surface area in one go. It even comes with an added scrub refill for all those stubborn stains. And when you’re finished, the slender design means it tucks away neatly.
When you’ve got time for a deeper, and extremely thorough clean, the Rinse Clean spin mop and bucket set is your best option. This mop may look ordinary at first glance, but the ingenious bucket features two tanks that separate clean and dirty water, so you’re only using clean water from one end of the house to the other. The built-in wringer with foot-activated pedal also effectively spins out excess water, giving you dry floors faster, without the backache.
An effective clean is just the start. Vileda also offers a greener clean, with their durable microfibre mop refills that remove more than 99 per cent of bacteria from floors with no chemicals*. Post-clean, pop the mop refill in the washing machine, ready to re-use – no waste! The ProMist Max Plus and the Rinse Clean mops come with refills, which are also available to purchase separately, so you can refresh your mop (ideally every six months) without replacing the entire mop system.
For a deep clean using continuously clean water, choose Vileda’s Rinse Clean spin mop set

Get your lawn ready for endless hours of fun with these super-simple weekend tasks
Spring weekends are famous for the hum of mowers throughout the street and the smell of fresh cut grass. To get the best results, follow the one-third rule: the idea is to try not to cut off more than one-third of the grass each time you mow. A taller, thicker lawn helps to smother out pesky weeds and mowing on a higher setting also encourages deeper roots, which are more able to cope with stressful weather conditions.
Weeds are any lawn lover’s worst nightmare. Controlling weeds is always the trickiest part of lawn care –
weeding by hand may spread dormant seeds or leave part of the root in the ground, causing more weeds to grow, while traditional lawn weed killers need to be applied to the whole lawn, taking up even more time! Roundup For Lawns is the new, ready-to-use spot spray that tackles lawn weeds with visible results in just seven days.
The key to the lawn of your dreams (and becoming the envy of your neighbours) is a healthy dose of fertiliser. Scotts Lawn Builder provides your lawn with all the essential nutrients it needs for strong and healthy growth,
all season long. Simply grab your Scotts Hand Held Fertiliser Spreader and a bag of Scotts Lawn Builder All Purpose Slow Release Fertiliser, and get those steps up! Feeding your lawn is super easy and with Scotts Lawn Builder All Purpose, you’ll have a healthy green lawn all season long.
In just a couple of hours, you’ve got a healthy dose of vitamin D, spent some time outdoors, worked up a few thousand steps and oh, made your lawn ready for endless hours of spring and summer fun. It’s time to put your feet up and admire a great day’s work!
HANDY HINT: LOOKING PATCHY?
You’ve put the time and effort into your lawn, but there are a few dead patches around… the solution? Scotts Lawn Builder Organic Lawn Soil Topdress & Underlay! By adding a thin layer of topdress over dead patches, you bring some much-needed life back into the soil, giving grass roots a healthy home to sink themselves into.

SUPERCHARGE YOUR SPRING DECORATING WITH AN EXCITING NEW CROP OF INDOOR POTS
Photography BRIGID ARNOTT Styling KATIE TURNER
Decorating with plants isn’t new – a flouncy fern, shiny fiddle leaf fig, trailing vine or sculptural succulent can lift even the dullest room and bring nature in. But the right pot adds a whole new dimension.
This season’s bounty comes in all forms and sizes, from smart ceramic in soft pinks, greens, neutrals and bold prints, to clear glass propagation flasks as well as classic terracotta. On-trend fluted and ribbed vessels in modern shapes – along with versatile woven baskets and plant stands – open up brilliant opportunities for every space.
“Have fun with a mix of colours and textures,” says Anna. “Pots are such an easy, low-cost way to update your home’s look”
For indoor use, select ‘cache’ pots without a drainage hole. Bunnings garden decor buyer Anna Safaryan says, “Choose a cache pot 1-2cm wider and taller than the plant’s plastic grower’s pot, so it sits neatly inside.”

“Vertical layers save space,” says Anna Safaryan. “And pots on stands are less obtrusive visually because you can see the floor below and through the legs”
“Lightweight baskets are a great option for larger, established plants,” says Anna. “They’re easier to move than a big pot, are less likely to mark your floor and add a touch of bohemian style.”

For a charming display, cluster orchids and other plants to enjoy good indirect light
n Check plant labels for watering needs and to help choose their ideal location. Horticulturist Tammy Huynh says, “Rotate plants around the home so they don’t stay in low light conditions for too long.”
n Repot when plants become root-bound (look for roots growing out of drainage
holes), using potting mix for indoor use, which is less prone to fungus gnats.
n Increase your plant stock for free by propagating cuttings in water. “If you love the look of plants in water (with no soil), add small amounts of liquid fertiliser to the water every two weeks,” says Tammy.

Fresh flowers are an instant mood booster, but buying a bunch or two every week quickly adds up. The best – and most budget-friendly – way to enjoy blooms in your home is to cultivate your own cut-flower garden. And you don’t need a lot of space – provided there is ample sunlight, flowers will grow in pots, window boxes or garden beds.
Most flowers need six to eight hours of sunlight a day to grow, so look for a nice sunny spot in your garden or courtyard – or on your balcony – with protection from the hot afternoon sun. For fresh blooms year-round, plant a mix of annuals (plants that grow for one season), perennials (grow over three or more years) and evergreen flowering shrubs and trees.
Flowering annuals such as cosmos, zinnia, marigold and snapdragon can be grown from seeds or seedlings. Horticulturist Steve Falcioni of OCP (ecoorganicgarden.com.au) suggests seedlings for beginner gardeners. “They’re easier and generally produce flowers faster, given they’re already a few weeks old when you buy them,” says Steve. “Seeds require more skill and time, but they are economical, especially if you have large garden beds to fill.”
Perennials such as roses, hydrangeas, dahlias and gardenias can be bought as young plants and transplanted to beds or raised in pots. Delay planting out in early spring if you live in a frost-prone area.
Many plants grow well in containers, so you don’t need garden beds to have flowers at home. Look for pots proportionate to the size of the plants. Window boxes and hanging baskets are ideal for small and low-growing flowers, including alyssum, carnation and everlasting daisy.
“Use a premium potting mix and feed regularly to encourage blooms,” says Steve. “A liquid organic feed is perfect for delivering fast-acting nutrients when needed.”
Early morning is the best time to cut fresh flowers. For arrangements, florist Sean Cook (mrcook.com.au) suggests keeping it simple.
“A bouquet of one flower type has great visual impact,” he says. “If you want to mix it up, use a variety of shapes, textures and sizes to create interest, but keep it tonal, as this will ensure a more cohesive look.” Get cut flowers into water quickly and mist now and then with a spray bottle if they are looking droopy.

Bulbs such as daffodils and tulips (mass planted in autumn) will provide an array of colourful blooms in spring“Use clean, sharp scissors or secateurs and cut flower stems on an angle, so there’s a bigger surface area to absorb water”
Sean Cook, floristCombine assorted greenery (we used maidenhair fern, philodendron and bridal veil) with colourful daffodils – which can be cut for indoors – to brighten an entry. Northcote Pottery ‘LA’ 45cm egg pots in Marine, $70.84 each, I/N: 0361834. All plants sold separately.
To help flowers last longer and keep their colour alive, Sean Cook has a few must-try tips. “Re-cut flowers before you put them in a vase as this allows them to better take up water,” he says. Some flowers, such as hydrangeas and poppies, require a little extra treatment. “Dip the ends of their stems into hot water and leave for five to seven seconds before placing in a vase filled with fresh water,” says Sean. Position the vase out of direct sunlight or heat, as this may cause the flowers to brown or wilt.
Change the vase water every few days to prevent it going murky. A quarter of an antibacterial tablet (such as Milton) or a teaspoon of bleach in the vase water can also help to keep it clear, he says. Re-trim the stems each time you change the water and remove any spent or loose blooms and leaves.
Take softwood cuttings of buddleia, roses, hydrangea and salvia in late spring or early summer. Dip into a rooting hormone to stimulate faster root growth, and plant in pots or beds.
Divide clumps of flowering perennials such as phlox, aster, lambs’ ear, delphinium and geranium every few years to create more plants for the garden, or to gift to friends.
Be creative with floral arrangements. Everyday herbs, fruits and vegetables can be decorative, too. “It doesn’t have to be strictly floral – globe artichokes have beautiful buds and gorgeous silvery foliage, while citrus on branches gives Mediterranean vibes,” says Sean.
Some plants, such as tall or standard dahlias, need to be staked for support, otherwise their slender stems will topple over in strong winds or from the weight of the blooms. Horticulturist Chloe Thomson (@beantheredugthat) uses the ‘corral’ method with a trellis net to support her dahlias (see left).
Shortly after planting, install garden stakes (1.5-2m tall) at 1m intervals around the perimeter of the garden bed. Slide a trellis net over the stakes and secure 20cm to 30cm from the ground. Repeat with a second trellis net about 30cm to 40cm above the first.
This method is ideal if you have a large group of flowers, but if you only have a few, support plants individually with garden stakes. For a no-stake option, look for dwarf dahlias.
“Always remove any greenery or leaves from flower stems that will be below the water level”

Tomato ‘Beefsteak’IT’S EASY – AND ECONOMICAL –TO GROW TOMATOES IN A GARDEN BED OR POT. HERE’S HOW TO GET A BUMPER CROP OF THIS JUICY FRUIT!
Tasty tomatoes are home garden heroes. They’re a low-cost crop, relatively low maintenance, highly productive and come in many sizes, flavours and colours.
Tomatoes fall into two groups: ‘bush’ or determinate, and ‘vining’ or indeterminate tomatoes. Bianca Boman of Mr. Fothergill’s says bush tomatoes are best for container gardening. “They don’t require staking, so are ideal where space is limited,” she says. “Their fruit ripens within a short time frame, making them great if you plan on canning your harvest.”
Vining tomatoes climb and need to be staked for support. They can be grown in large pots or planted in garden beds, and produce fruit throughout the growing season.
In most climates, plant tomatoes during the warmer months, usually early spring. In tropical areas, they can be grown year-round but are best in autumn and winter to avoid issues with pests and diseases.
“Growing from seed is economical and gives you access to a wider range of varieties,” says Bianca Boman. To get a head start on the season, sow in seed trays indoors in a warm spot and keep the soil moist. By the time it’s
warm enough outside, the seedlings will be ready for transplanting. Where to grow
Choose a spot in full sun (six to eight hours) in well-drained soil. Incorporate aged manure or compost, and a dusting of garden lime. If planting in pots, fill containers at least 40cm wide and deep with premium quality potting mix. When planting out seedlings, remove the first set of leaves and plant to this depth or slightly deeper (tomatoes root along the stem when buried under soil, so this provides a more stable base to support growth).
Companion planting
Generally, it’s best to plant tomatoes on their own, ensuring sufficient air circulation and space to grow. But interplanting with sweet basil and marigold can help repel insects, such as whitefly. Avoid planting with brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower or
kale), fennel, dill or other members of the nightshade family (eggplant, capsicum and potatoes).
Support and care
Stake when planting and use soft garden ties to secure the stem and long branches to stakes as the plant grows. Remove the little laterals or shoots that appear between the stem and branches. Water plants regularly – at least once a day or more in hot weather – and liquid feed once a fortnight when buds start to form. “Use a fertiliser specifically formulated for fruiting plants,” advises Bianca.
Harvest time
“Pick tomatoes once fully ripened on the vine,” says Bianca. Look for firm fruit with mostly mature colour. They can also be picked when still slightly green and ripened indoors on a warm windowsill. Ensure a bit of the stem is still attached if ripening indoors.
“One packet of Roma tomato seeds contains 125 seeds and has an estimated harvest of $12.80 per plant, which means that one seed pack could yield more than $1,600 worth of produce!”

the clips down to slot the Edge Boards into place.
6.
To lay the grooved boards, place a ‘standard’ clip into the groove of a board at every joist. These automatically gap the boards for easy installation. Tip: For the best finish, cut boards longer than the length required, to be trimmed later.
7. LOCK BOARDS INTO POSITION
Place a ‘locking’ clip at the centre joist of each board, instead of a standard clip. These stop the boards shifting or coming out of alignment.
8.
Once all the boards are laid, use a circular saw and a straightedge to trim all the boards to length.
9. DROP IN BREAKER BOARD
If the deck is designed with a breaker board (which runs perpendicular), drop it in and secure with the standard clips.
10. WASH AND ENJOY!
Give your new deck a wash with warm, soapy water and a soft broom, hose it down and you’re done!

Your lawn is so much more than a patch of green to cover the soil. It’s a play space, the epicentre of entertaining and summer living, a place to picnic, throw a ball or just lie back and look at the sky. So it’s worth a little effort to make it lovely.
Mowing and watering your lawn is just the start to luscious growth – but Yates makes it easy to provide the extra care a lawn needs to be great. Here’s how to make the most of your lawn with Yates.
Don’t allow weeds to ruin the look of your lawn or prickles to puncture your fun. Get your lawn barefoot ready with Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed Hose On Lawn Weed Killer and Lawn Fertiliser Apply when weeds are actively growing, preferably before they flower, and reapply every three weeks if necessary.
The handy hose connection dilutes the solution as it sprays – there’s no mixing or measuring required. Weed ‘n‘ Feed selectively kills the most common broadleaf weeds, such as bindii, clover, dandelion and thistles. Weed ‘n’ Feed also contains fertiliser, giving your lawn a welcome boost of nutrients for lush green growth.
Support your lawn’s growth by giving it all the nutrients it needs. Yates Dynamic Lifter Concentrated Lawn Food is an organic based concentrated lawn fertiliser providing dual benefits of fast-acting nutrients and slow-release organics, which means you feed more lawn using less. It promotes healthy soil, which encourages earthworms and beneficial micro-organisms, in turn creating an environment for your grass to thrive. Apply four weeks after using Weed ‘n‘ Feed: cast the granules over your lawn and water in. It’s suitable for all lawn types and can be used in spring, early summer and early autumn.
If not kept in check, lawn pests can derail your lawn-care efforts. Keep an eye out for damage from bugs, especially early in the season (around mid-September), when overwintering adult pests emerge, and serve them an eviction notice with Yates Grub Kill & Protect For Lawns. The product not only kills many of the most aggressive lawn pests, it also binds with the soil to continue protecting against the dreaded curl grub for up to six months.

Adull and patchy lawn can happen to anyone. But that doesn’t mean you have to accept this sad state of affairs. If you are looking at an unruly lawn, out of control weeds and a few bare spots, you’ll be pleased to learn there are some small simple steps you can take to achieve a gloriously green haven.
Start by getting rid of weeds, but be thorough, says horticulturist Melissa King of Scotts Lawn Builder. “If you are manually removing weeds, use a hand-weeding tool to ensure you get the whole plant, roots and all,” she advises. “And try to remove weeds
while they are young and before they set seed.” Chemical weedkillers are best for treating large infestations –use a selective herbicide, but check that it’s suitable for your lawn type.
Curl grubs and lawn army worm are two of the most-feared lawn pests. Curl grubs hide under the soil surface chewing through the roots while lawn army worms march across the grass, decimating leaf blades. Both can ruin a lawn. Brown or yellowing patches may be a sign of their presence in the lawn. If sighted, treat immediately with a suitable pesticide.
Over time, a layer of thatch (dead grass and organic debris) builds up at the base of the lawn and the soil becomes compacted. Both hinder grass roots from accessing air, water and nutrients. “To remove thatch, mow, then vigorously rake the grass with a metal-tined or dethatching rake,” says Melissa. “Then use a garden fork or spiked sandals to aerate the lawn. Creating these holes helps to alleviate compaction and allow air, water and nutrients to get down to the roots.”
Feeding is important for growth, says lawn-care expert Nathan Stafford (@nathanslawnsandgardens). “Ideally, the lawn should be fed in spring, summer and autumn, but at least do it in spring,” he says. Look for a complete fertiliser with slow-release

feeding. “This feeds continuously over the season, instead of dumping nutrients all at once,” says Melissa.
Evidently, we’re more like our lawns than we realise. “Like humans, the grass needs to eat and drink,” Nathan says. “Watering in the morning is best, but if it’s not possible, early evening will suffice.” Water deeply, ensuring moisture is getting to where it’s needed most: the roots. “As a general rule, through an Australian summer, water once or twice a week,” says Melissa.
“Warm-season grass, such as couch and buffalo, should be mowed every two weeks in spring and summer,” advises Nathan. “With each mow, only remove a third of the leaf blade.” Growth slows in winter, but that doesn’t mean no mow. “In winter,
Grass loves a good drink, but check with your local council if watering restrictions apply before turning on the sprinkler
don’t go more than four weeks, regardless of growth. This helps remove disease that may be building in the top of the lawn,” says Nathan.
Feeding and watering help to thicken grass and encourage it to spread
into bare parts. But for areas that require a quick green-up, repair with a suitable lawn seed, scattered over the area. “Maintain even moisture levels in the soil until the seedlings reach 5-8cm,” says Melissa. “Once the seedlings are 8-10cm tall, it’s safe to mow.”

Store all garden chemicals and products out of the reach of children and pets.Neat and tidy edges take your lawn to the next level, creating a polished finish. An edging tool will help you to get a clean, sharp line between grass, paths and driveways, or between the nature strip and footpath. You may find a manual lawn edger or half-moon edger best for curved edges such as around garden beds.
Take the hard yakka out of yard work with a power edger. For a smaller space with access to power, a corded model may be the way to go. Or, for not too much more, you can get a cordless model. Both offer adjustable cutting depth, giving you extra flexibility.
A petrol-powered lawn edger is a good option for tougher jobs or a larger property.
Regular mowing helps maintain a healthy lawn but do you edge before or after you mow? There is no hard and fast rule, so it comes down to preference. As a guide, trim areas the mower can’t reach with a whipper snipper, then mow the lawn and edge it. Keep mower blades and cutting tools sharp with a cut file so grass is cut and not torn or shredded.
Keep lawns out of garden beds, off paths and neatly bordered with garden edging. It can be decorative or minimal, depending on your landscape style. Concrete or steel edging will complement modern or contemporary properties, while terracotta, natural rock, bricks or treated pine tidy up cottage, traditional or coastal scapes. Corten steel is a useful all-rounder.
To define the lawn but also give your landscape texture and interest, consider edging borders with plants. Use wispy grasses like lomandra, blue fescue or miscanthus for a relaxed feel. Or, for a more formal look, go for tightly clipped hedges of westringia, buxus or rhaphiolepis. Mulch with pine bark or eucalyptus mulch to suppress weed growth and keep the lawn from creeping into the garden beds. A periodic trim with a spade or half-moon edger will help keep the lawn tidy.
A verdant lawn with manicured edges won’t look its best if you don’t clean up after your edging and trimming efforts. Using a blower is the quickest way, but for compact areas you should be able to rake and sweep easily enough. Give hedges, bushes and shrubs a trim while you are in edging mode and make sure to clean your tools of all grass, soil and other matter so they are ready to go for next time. Use a stiff brush or follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and maintenance.
THERE’S MORE THAN ONE WAY TO CUT THE GRASS. WE TAKE YOU THROUGH THE SIMPLEST MOWERS TO THE LATEST IN LAWN-TRIMMING TECHNOLOGY
Words KYLIE JACKES
Alawn that is beautifully manicured is a joy to behold and, with the right mower, it can be a breeze to maintain. Today, there’s a vast range of mowers on offer and with new technology and improved designs many have become quieter, more ergonomic and more efficient. Whether you have a large yard, sloping block or tiny patch of grass, here’s a round-up of options to help find a machine to suit you.
The classic push mower can be ideal for small lawns and, without the need to charge batteries or top up petrol, it is always ready to go. They’re also quiet to use, easy to manoeuvre, budget friendly and compact to store. When comparing models, look for robust components, a catcher option and a lightweight design. For a consistent, level cut, consider a model with self-sharpening blades, like the Victa 16” razor cut push mower.
Perennially popular, petrol mowers offer considerable power and a longer cut time. A key consideration is whether to opt for push or self-propelled. Push mowers are a great choice for smaller flat lawns, while self-propelled are faster moving and more suited to larger yards with hills or obstacles. With a quality steel deck and a powerful four-stroke engine, you can expect this type of mower to provide years of service. Look for mulching, bagging or discharging versatility and an automatic choke feature, which will make starting the mower easier.
Lightweight and simple to start with the flick of a switch, electric mowers are easy to manoeuvre around corners and push up inclines. Being electric-powered, they require minimal maintenance and don’t produce emissions. But they do need to be plugged into a power outlet, which limits their range, making them best suited to small lawns.
Victa ‘Classic Cut Anniversary Edition’ 18in/46cm mulch or catch petrol lawn mower, $449, I/N: 0375735
Fantastic for downsizers and anyone with a small- to medium-sized lawn, robotic mowers have risen in popularity as an effective set-and-forget option to keep grass neatly trimmed year-round, says horticulturist
Adam Woodhams at Victa. As with robotic vacuum cleaners, after initial programming, they work within mapped zones and return to a charging dock. “The Victa ‘RM100’ has onboard sensors that navigate around fixed obstacles and random ones, like a chair left in the middle of the lawn, and is safe around kids and pets,” explains Adam. “If lifted or flipped over, it will automatically stop and the rain sensor means it automatically returns to its charging station if it becomes too wet.” Various models can capably handle moderate slopes and lawns up to 600sqm.
For a lusher lawn, leave the grass a little longer. This allows it to photosynthesise more efficiently, growing stronger foliage and roots. Long grass blades also shade the soil and roots from sun and heat, reducing moisture loss. To up your sustainability, mulch mow to add a blanket of insulating mulch every time you mow.
The range of cordless and batterypowered mowers has grown and so has their performance, according to Ozito’s Grant Bertram. “Battery power and technology innovations now deliver the power of petrol within our brushless 36V (2 x 18V) mowers, so you can power through large lawns up to 500sqm on a single charge,” he says. “The Ah or amp hours are like the fuel of the tank. The bigger the Ah number of the battery, the more lawn you can mow before you need to recharge.”
Available as both battery- and petrol-powered models, ride-ons are the go-to for medium to large properties with upwards of 8001000sqm of lawn. “As a general guide, the bigger the lawn the wider the cut you want, as you mow more grass with each pass,” explains Adam. “The two main types are a cart or tractor style that use a typical steering wheel and pedal arrangement, and ‘zero turn’ or ‘zero radius’ machines that use levers to control steering,” he says. Tractor types are easy to control and can tow and include catcher kits. However, due to the turn radius, they can leave areas of uncut grass behind, requiring backtracking. Zero turn can cover large areas in less time and offer great manoeuvrability, but can only be used on flat areas.
TIP WORRIED ABOUT YOUR ROBOT MOWER GETTING PINCHED? THE VICTA ‘RM100’ HAS THEFT PROTECTION, ADAM EXPLAINS: “MOVING IT OUTSIDE ITS ZONE WILL TRIGGER ITS ALARM SYSTEM AND IT CAN ONLY BE UNLOCKED WITH A PIN SET BY THE OWNER”
For homes with small yards, Grant recommends an 18V lawn mower or cylinder mower. For larger areas, he suggests a 36V (2 x 18V) cordless model with a brushless motor: “This will deliver the power of petrol without the hassle and need for mixing fuels – and it’s virtually maintenance free.”

“Mulch mowing is more sustainable as it returns ultra-fine clippings to the lawn as you mow. It also speeds up the job as there’s no stopping to empty the catcher”
Adam Woodhams, Victa
The key to resilient and flourishing plants is healthy soil, but the delicate dance of microbes and carbon, air and water (and more) in nourishing soil is a complicated science we barely understand. The solution? Leave it to the experts: Mother Nature and her team of wormy helpers.
In Verasoil’s NSW vermiculture and composting facility, worms are fed organic material from sources including aquaculture and cotton gin waste, spoiled grain and even kitchen scraps (via household kerbside collection). In return for this smorgasbord of treats, worms break it down into castings, turning trash into treasure for your plants.
Verasoil packages up these organic-approved worm castings to nourish your soil. This natural biological fertiliser delivers the nutrients indoor and outdoor plants need to thrive: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The processing through the worm’s gut makes these nutrients available to your plants in a way that artificial processes cannot replicate. The interplay of fungi, bacteria and physical elements in the soil web is a complex dance, and organic biological inputs, such as Verasoil Pure Worm Castings, are the best way to balance this delicate system.
Verasoil worm castings are gentle on your soil and won’t burn plants. Sprinkle a handful of castings around the base of each plant, giving more (a kilogram per square metre) to fruit trees. If repotting plants or building a garden bed from scratch, use a ratio of one cup of Verasoil to four cups of potting mix. Mix it with lawn top dressing (a ratio of 1:15) to give your turf a boost. You can even use it on your indoor potted plants, as there’s no off-putting odour!

What’s the world’s fastest-growing pet ownership category? Reptiles! They’re quiet, don’t drop hair and are ideal for a limited space. If you’re thinking of getting a snake or lizard, try these handy tips.
The first step is to get a reptile licence from your state government. Don’t worry – it’s not a test, just a register of who has what.
Next, you’ll need an enclosure. President of the Australian Herpetological Society Chris Williams says a common mistake is to think bigger is better. “Reptiles, especially snakes, freak out if they’re in a big enclosure,” he says. “They’ll try to squeeze into the tightest corners.”
Repurpose a fish tank or, if you’re handy, convert an old television cabinet or bookcase –just make sure there are no gaps (escape-proof ventilation excepted).
You’ll also need a heat globe or pad, but ensure your scaly friend can move to a cool spot as needed. Find more care tips at ahs.org.au.
Barking dogs is one of the most common categories of complaint received by councils. While it’s annoying, it’s important to remember that the dog is trying to communicate something – and figuring that out is the first step towards getting them to stop. Your pup could be trying to say:
I’m hurting. A thorough health check and chat with your vet is the best place to start if you’re worried about excessive barking.
I’m bored. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Try food-filled chew toys, or treats hidden around the garden. Alternate morning walks with training sessions to keep their brain active. I’m scared. What’s happening when they bark? Is someone mowing? A storm happening? Are they worried about being left alone? These are all clues. Get away from my house! Territory protection is natural, but if they’re barking at the wrong people, such as the neighbour or postie, use positive training to change your dog’s association with that person.

Agarden full of colour and texture looks amazing, but unfortunately there are a few plants that can be dangerous to our pets.
Emergency veterinarian Dr Hannah Ritchie, from Animal Emergency Service Carrara, says most plants toxic to animals require ingestion – your pet needs to eat the plant for it to be a problem. Other plants can still be dangerous without being ingested. Plants known to be poisonous or hazardous should be labelled accordingly. You could also check the common or scientific name in a list of toxic and non-toxic plants at
rspca.org.au or aspca.org. Dr Hannah says to avoid cycads if you have dogs (as all parts are poisonous and can lead to liver failure and be fatal) and lilies if you have cats. Signs your pet may have come into contact with a toxic plant include drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, lack of appetite, abnormal heart rate, weakness, hypotension, depression, transient blindness and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, seek immediate medical attention from your vet or an emergency clinic. Below are some of the most problematic plants for pet owners plus alternative options for your garden.
Azaleas and rhododendrons
The whole plant is dangerous with moderate levels of toxicity.
Try instead: Magnolias should work well in the same spot in your garden.
Lilies
Lilies are toxic to cats. “Even small amounts of ingestion (such as licking pollen) can result in kidney failure,” says Dr Hannah. Dogs may dig up and eat the bulbs, which are also toxic
Try instead: Sunflowers are a safe option.
Chrysanthemums
Pretty to look at, but its toxins make this plant highly problematic for cats and can be toxic to dogs, too. Try instead: Snapdragons add a safe dose of colour.
Bulbs (such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinths)
The bulb of these cheery springtime favourites is highly toxic, and it’s not worth taking a chance on the flowers either.
Try instead: African daisies come in a range of bright colours, or you could try orchids.
Oleander
All parts of this shrub, including its delicate flowers and sap, are highly toxic to both cats and dogs.
Try instead: Lilly pilly makes a wonderful screening plant.
Cycads (such as sago palm, zamia, dioon, bowenia and macrozamia)
Avoid if you have pets – all parts are poisonous. Dogs may try to eat the leaves and fruit, which are toxic.
Try instead: A bird’s nest fern makes a great statement in any garden.

1 Mark up a hardwood panel with a combination square to cut three 430 x 180mm shelves and two 410 x 180mm end pieces using a circular saw and clamped straightedge. Tip: Make the 180mm-wide cuts first.
2 To mark the recesses on the end pieces, measure up to mark 22mm and 40mm for the base shelf, 92mm and 110mm for the middle shelf, 392mm and 410mm for the top. Tip: Use an offcut to check the depths.
3 Set up a router with an 18mm straight-cut bit. Centre it on the shelf marks with a straightedge clamped against the router plate as a guide. To cut 9mm deep recesses, make a series of passes along the marks.
4 On the top and middle shelf, mark along the centre 90mm in from the sides. Mark 85mm in from the ends and the 215mm centre. Position 102mm holesaw on the marks to drill halfway, completing from the other side.
5 Sand the recesses with 120-grit paper to remove any breakout, then apply timber adhesive, position the shelves and clamp from side to side. Wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth; leave to set.
6 Remove clamps, tape ends to protect and secure shelves using a nail gun with 20mm brads. Remove tape, fill nail holes, leave to dry then sand all over with 180-grit paper. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth.
Keep in mind...
7 Use a clean, dry cloth to apply two coats of tung oil, leaving to dry after each. Move the stand to a sunny spot. Plant herbs into the six terracotta pots, position in the holes and add terracotta drip tray to the base shelf.
n When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear.
n Have the router in position before turning it on, keep the plate flat on the surface to move it, and wait for the bit to stop completely before removing. Check the cut depth on a scrap of the same timber.

Transplanting, repotting and propagating plants can be messy. Make a space for these jobs that’s practical and pretty – and will give your back sweet relief. This large project involves bricklaying and rendering to create a sturdy, great-looking bench with a work area and storage for garden gear.
Reminiscent of the old red-brick barbie at the bottom of the garden, this attractive, rock-solid potting bench includes a handy built-in storage shelf. For product details, see following pageThis bench is made using three slabs of concrete, and bricks rendered for a modern finish. The U-shape foundation slab is embedded in the ground, with the shelf and top poured separately and lifted into place over courses of brickwork. They are very heavy, so enlist at least one more pair of hands

1 For the foundation slab, excavate a 1750mm x 900mm U-shape to 80mm deep, using bricks as a guide for the back and sides. Shovel out the dirt and check with a level that the surface is flat. Use a circular saw to cut a 15mm plywood base 1525mm x 690mm for the shelf and another 1725mm x 800mm for the top, and position them on a flat, even surface.

4 Empty concrete into a wheelbarrow, slowly adding 2.4L of water per bag while mixing with a shovel. Work quickly to pour into the formwork, tapping the sides with a hammer to release trapped air. Screed the top with a level; trowel smooth. Pour a 90mm-deep foundation, and 60mm-deep shelf and top, using eight bags each. Leave to cure for at least a couple of days, then remove foundation formwork and cut away plastic.
7 Remove the shelf from the formwork, lifting it onto a 10mm bed of mortar, flush with the front and sides of the bricks. Tap into place and leave to cure for at least a couple of days. Mark the next course of bricks on the shelf, using a level to check they’re flush with the front and sides. Trowel a bed of mortar, then lay six courses, offsetting the joints. Leave to cure for a couple of days. Tip: We left a gap in the top course for the option to use the bench with a portable barbecue connected to a gas bottle on the shelf.
2 Use a mitre saw to cut 90mm x 22mm decking pine to fit the foundation and bases. Butt the sides and pre-drill with a 5mm bit to secure two 50mm batten screws each joint using a hex head bit. Repeat to attach the frames to the bases. Reinforce outside all corners with brackets and 20mm screws. Position the foundation formwork with at least two sleeper pegs each side.
3 With an angle grinder, cut reinforcing mesh to fit in the formwork, joining pieces with tie wire and pliers, then remove. Line the formwork with heavy-duty plastic, cutting with a utility knife. Position the mesh on spacers (we used small stones) to raise it off the base. Tip: For the foundation, cut 800mm x 400mm mesh sides and a 1000mm x 200mm back.
Mark a line halfway around each brick with a pencil. Position the brick on grassy earth or sandy ground and tap the line using a brick bolster held at an angle of about 60°, tapping with a hammer and alternating the angle while making a 15mm groove around the brick. To split along the cut line, hold the bolster straight up at 90° and tap with the hammer.
5 Set out the first course of bricks with 10mm gaps in a double layer at the sides and a single layer at the back, with half bricks as fillers. Mark around them, then remove. Mix two bags of mortar in a bucket, adding water to make a paste with a drill mixer, then trowel on a 10mm-thick bed. Butter the sides and base of the bricks with mortar and reposition inside the marks, tapping into place with a rubber mallet.
6 Trowel a bed of mortar to lay the second course, offsetting the joints by alternating the bricks at the sides and positioning half bricks as needed. Scrape away any excess mortar with the trowel. At the corners, use a builder’s square to check the bricks are straight and flush with the first course. Tip: See the breakout box (above right) on how to split bricks.
8 Brush over brickwork with a small broom to remove loose mortar. Use a drill mixer to prepare a tub of pre-mixed render. Apply with a trowel in short sweeps across the bricks, working in sections. Use a sheepskin render mitt to smooth all over, creating an even 5mm coverage. Leave to cure for a couple of days.
9 Apply a bed of mortar, remove the bench top from the formwork and lift into position, checking the overhang is equal all round. Tap into place, remove excess mortar and leave to cure. Touch up the mortar with render using a small scraper. Leave the bench to cure thoroughly. Apply two coats of concrete sealer all over with a mini roller, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
n If you’re planning a different-sized bench, you’ll need to adjust the material quantities. But keep it less than 2m x 1m to ensure support for the shelf and top.
n Wear a mask, gloves and protective eyewear when mixing up concrete, and wear closed footwear when moving the slabs.
n Drying and curing times are affected by the weather. Follow the packaging instructions and, if in doubt, leave for a few extra days before moving onto the next step.

Keep your cool in spring and summer with shade trees
This evergreen fruit tree thrives in tropical climes but will also grow well in warm temperate zones. It grows to about 8-10m tall, but can be kept smaller with regular pruning. Mango trees can start bearing fruit after three years, but take longer if grown from seed.
An impressive deciduous tree with a pyramidal habit, it typically reaches 10-12m high with a 5m spread. Relatively slow growing, the black tupelo has glossy green leaves that transform into rich red, orange and yellow hues in autumn.
With a compact habit up to 12m tall and 9m wide, this maple is a beautiful specimen tree. It has handsome green leaves in spring and summer, providing cover from the sun. In autumn, the foliage develops rich lipstick-red to orange tones, which eventually fall to reveal a sculptural silhouette.
This medium-to-large native rainforest tree flowers in summer, producing a spectacular display of fiery wheel-shaped blooms. It can grow up to 30m tall and 10m wide in its native habitat, but remains smaller in cultivation. An evergreen tree, it can also grow in temperate and cooler climes, tolerating light frosts once established.
