Petal power

Colourful flowering plants are in store now, and the opportunities to brighten up your place are many! Pot a posse of planters for the deck, suspend hanging baskets above the patio, fill balcony planters or create an impressive display with mass planting in a garden bed. Mix bright petals for a showstopping statement, or go elegant and understated with pretty pastels. Choose either annual plants – such as potted colour varieties – for a bright seasonal display, or use perennials to ensure reliable colour year after year.

Build a bench!

Bunnings Workshop member Sandra (sandy_d), from Victoria, created a welcoming seat in her backyard, using besser blocks painted in Dulux super enamel in gloss black, and pine posts. “There is really nothing more rewarding than telling family and friends you made it from scratch,” she says. Now is a great time to start a vegie patch. To boost the success of your crops, improve 1 the soil before you plant with plenty of organic matter, like compost, aged manures or blood and bone.

In most climates, sow beans, basil, chillies, cucumbers, eggplants, pumpkin, sweet corn and zucchinis. If you live in a cool region, wait until the soil is warmer before planting. Get a head start on the planting season by using seedlings. They’re easy to grow and, as young established plants, have a greater chance of success in the garden. But if you’re not in a rush, seeds are great, too.

Pests like caterpillars, whitefly and aphids find vegies and herbs irresistible. Keep them at bay with an organic insecticide spray. 2 Spray at first sight and repeat as necessary. Weeds compete with plants for valuable water and nutrients. Pull them out by hand or spray with an organic 3 weedkiller. Supercharge the growth and productivity of your vegie patch by feeding regularly with 5 a liquid fertiliser.

To support tall or climbing plants like cherry tomatoes and beans, make a teepee trellis with bamboo stakes. Tie string along it at intervals for extra support. 4 Keep your household in greens by growing your own lettuce. Try our top picks (below).

1 Scotts Osmocote ‘Premium Soil Improver’ compost, $9.75/25L, I/N: 2962102. 2 Yates ‘Nature’s Way’ ready-to-use citrus and ornamental spray, $14.53/750ml, I/N: 2962024. 3 Eco-Organic Garden ‘Slasher’ ready-to-use organic weedkiller, $13.23/1L, I/N: 0189791. 4 Brunnings 180cm natural bamboo garden stakes, $9.49/pack of 10, I/N: 0290929. 5 PowerFeed ‘Pro Series’ all purpose liquid fertiliser, $15.83/ 1.2L, I/N: 0064796. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

COS

Also called romaine, this lettuce forms a tight head of sturdy, long and crisp leaves. Pick outer leaves while the head grows.

OAK LEAF

A loose-leaf variety made up of heavily lobed leaves, like an oak leaf. Harvest the outer leaves often.

ICEBERG

Ever popular, its round head has layers of crisp, mildly flavoured leaves with good crunch factor. Harvest the whole lettuce.

BUTTERCRUNCH

Much loved for its mild butterflavoured leaves and smooth, velvety texture. Great as wraps or in sandwiches.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or manure, follow any instructions carefully and wear gloves and suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.
