Tourism and sustainable tourism

Tourism is not a new thing, it’s been with us since God has created the earth and universe. Most people tour from place to another and without limitation by different means.

Facts

World’s top tourism destinations

World Tourism Organization reports on the top ten countries in the world tourists like to make it as their destinations, and those are France, USA, Spain, China, Italy, Turkey, Germany, UK, Russia, and Mexico. It must be something good and attractive from those countries. What are those and how the countries manage it? This question is raised up among other countries those are tying to share a piece of “stake of tourism. Thailand and countries in SEA have established their strategic plan of tourism which some are acceptable but some are not so well valuable and sustainable, and may create some negative and long-term impacts for the country and region.

Facts

International tourism receipts and expenditure Tourism is a major economic factor in Thailand. Estimates of tourism receipts directly contributing to the Thai GDP of 12 trillion baht range from 9 percent (1 trillion baht) (2013) to 16 percent and when including the indirect effects of tourism, it is said to account for 20.2 percent (2.4 trillion baht) of Thailand's GDP. Travel and Tourism, Economic Impact 2014: Thailand (PDF) (2014 ed.). London: World Travel & Tourism Council. 2014. Retrieved 10 March 2015.

Thailand is not just the only country who is trying to raise the volume of their GDP effected by tourism, but countries in the same region also, that means there are competitors out there.

The Trends

WHAT -

a “Qualified and Responsible Tourist” looking for To get a better understanding of the trends, we should consider the expectations of those qualified and responsible tourists as the summary below; • One stop service BUT with acceptable quality • Relationship and Friendship • Emotional and Spiritual renewal • Value added Trend, “Knowledge” • “Vintage” “Boutique” (History, Culture and Tradition) • “Sharing” “Togetherness” (Sufficiency and Sustainability) • Environmental Friendly product • Good things • “The opposite of things those make them busy and tired” • “Responsible services”

The Trends

“Integration” of Service and Product • • •

• • • • •

I don’t have enough time. I don’t need a super high quality. I see things are integrated and I want to know how they work together. I need new information to share with others. I am looking for simple things (since my life is always complicated) I want to see people able to fish (I don’t want to give just a fish). Now I understand more about the crisis of the earth (climate change; cooling and warming) I need a quieter and relaxing place.

The concept of integration has been spreading clearer since the last century, people gain a better understanding of the causes and effects, the holistic movement of creatures, creations, and THE CREATOR. Business of tourism has considered it as one o the most significant and valuable factor for their sustainable profit.

The Trends

What is it about? Sometimes “agro” stands for “agri” or agriculture and “eco” is for ecological. The term Ecotourism, sometimes in the past, was considered as a negative pattern, maybe, because of its mismanagement or wrong interpretation of “ecological components” or maybe a lacking of the knowledge of integration. Dictionaty.com, LLC defines Agri or Agro-tourism is a tourism in which tourists take part in farm or village activities, as animal and crop care, cooking and cleaning, handicrafts, and entertainments and Ecotourism is a tourism to places having unspoiled natural resources, with minimal impact on the environment being a primary concern.

Countries in the SEA region are very good in promoting and organizing the agoeco tourism because of richness of agriculture practices and ecosystem. The integration of the two systems have created a high value for tourism industry.

Agro-Ecological Tourism

“It’s not the end of the story…”

It’s one questions popped up among 100s of questions regarding AgroEco Tourism, “who is the real owner of the business and who is the most benefited?” In 2011, UHDP has started a conversation on CBT-Community based Tourism and later on the term CCBT-Cultural Community Based Tourism created by UHDP, in order to attract people in its target communities and donors. The only thing which is different between CBT and CCBT is the emphasis of cultural aspects which UHDP and target partners see that in order to preserve tradition, culture and good practices, it should be a value in the integration purposes. “Culture and traditional practices cannot help us to feed our stomach”, sometimes as a development organization, we observe the expression from people we provide assistance. “CCBT is a community owns the business, not a family, or an organization.”

Agro-Ecological Tourism

Agro-Eco Tourism-AET People like the “how” more than the “why”, so sometimes it leads to a wrong decision making, and waste of time and resources. It’s better to start with the question, “Why AET has been established and for What purposes?” Purposes; 1. Sustaining the good work 2. Sustaining the responsible and accountable farmers and communities 3. Sustaining the relationship of people 4. Sustaining the relationship of the creations and THE CREATOR

Agro-Ecological Tourism

How to start and finish “To start something is not so difficult, but to make it finished well is always the problem.”, it’s one thing that most of development agencies are struggling with, and it also becomes another problem for the communities they work with. The following process may be considered and as an experience of UHDP and people from Home in Garden on AET from the last ten years.

From the process above, mentioning steps of development. It starts form helping people to know and aware, then to understand, and help them to start and do (apply) it by themselves, it will take time for the adoption of something, but when it happens, people will keep it and or multiply it by themselves. When UHDP observes the readiness of people they work with, AET is not started at the first step but in opposite, it’s started almost at the end of the process.

Agro-Ecological Tourism

Roles of village trainers and volunteers

Uncle Yod at his tree nursery showing visitors those were interested about Agroforestry. A pastor from Australia listening to Mr.NamSang about their lives when they were in Myanmar. A mother put her handicrafts in front of her house for visitors. A group of foreigners made a long walk for field visit to Sustainable Upland Farming plots.

Mr. Yod became a village trainer on Agroforesty and Soil conservation for more than 10 years, after he involved with UHDP’s agriculture program for almost 6 years. He showed his interest when the staff talked to people in his village about agroforestry and soil conservation. He wanted to know more so he attended several meetings and workshops about the topics. He applied the techniques to one of his plots and learned how to manage it for a living and for his family. In 2008, UHDP realized his capacity to be able to share his experiences to other farmers within Thailand and other countries, including staff and visitors form development organizations around the world. Annually, through the partnership with UHDP, people from around 8 countries make a visit to his village and exchange experiences with him and other farmer in the village.

Practical Cases

Roles of village trainers and volunteers

Mr. Jai Bunla hosting a group of visitors to learn about green manure technique at Huay Wai village. Mr. Jai was in front of his pepper tree planted at his backyard garden, and just next to the pepper tree, it’s a bee hive constructed by him.

Mr. Jai Bunla is a volunteer working along side with UHDP on backyard agriculture for more than 10 years. Now he becomes an expert in honey bee raising using local knowledge. UHDP staff were trained form him about raising bee and how to harvest honey without getting hurt from the bees. He has started to practice the technique of green manure cover crop in one of his plots, and keeps it continued. Similar to Mr.Yod, people from other villages, and countries visit his work and community, through the assistance of UHDP.

Practical Cases

AET for more than a financial benefit. Home in Garden is run by a family of 3 people who fall in love with Agro-Ecological Practices since 2006, and working on a 7 acre piece of land. They want to live in a sufficient and sustainable ways and trying to NOT buying most of the food from outside, so they produce their own rice, eggs, chicken, fish, vegetable, fruits, honey, spices, and trying to live GREEN by collecting firewood, lights from solar, using appropriate technologies, and creating their own small and relaxing resort so they don’t leave more carbon footprint on the earth. . Since 2008, in average, 2 groups of visitors visit their small farm every month, and those people are from more than 10 countries. The values are friendship, exchange of knowledge, to bless and be blessed, for mission and ministry. Since 2012, the family has started to introduced a concept of FaM-Farming as Mission, to more than thousands of key people in development organizations, and now the outcomes and impacts are waiting to be ripen as a tool for the gospel in the region.

Seven key principles There are some tips should be considered for a development of AET both at the community and family level; 1. Customer is not our boss but closed friend and family member. 2. Our culture, tradition, practices, and knowledge are valuable and it’s real. 3. A Responsible host is equal as a responsible tourist. 4. The more you share, the more you be shared. 5. When you serve others today, you will be served tomorrow. 6. Luxury is not preferable than Necessity. 7. Yes is yes, No is no
