THE ARCHIPELAGO T
he Kvarken is an area of unique natural value. Rocky coastal waters and shallow bays with great fishing, as well as rugged shorelines and lush forests provide a fantastic habitat for birds and animals in the region. People living in the archipelago provide various services and unforgettable natural experiences.
TH E ICE AGE L EF T IT S M A RK O N T H E K VA RKEN NAT URA L H ERITAGE S IT E The Kvarken Archipelago is Finland’s only Natural Heritage site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Along with the Swedish High Coast, it is a member of a global community comprising 46 World Heritage Marine sites. In the Kvarken Archipelago, land uplift is increasing the amount of land by one square kilometre a year. In 2,500 years, the shallow Kvarken threshold will create a natural land connection between Finland and Sweden. The landscape was shaped by the continental ice sheet, which covered large parts of Northern Europe and created a depression around one kilometre deep in the earth’s surface.

NATURE Nature in the Vaasa region is at its best all year round, in every season. In the summer, the sea waves are free and wild, whereas in winter they are covered by snowy ice glistening in the sun. In the spring, the forests awake into splendour as they gently turn green; the bright autumn colours will take your breath away if you venture into the forest in the autumn.

ver time, the rural landscape rising from the sea has created vast lowlands, the green and golden fields that provide a peaceful horizon. In the evening, the rays of the setting sun sometimes give the landscape a glimmer only seen in storybooks, and the dusk brings a mist that gently envelops the scene. The massive boulders found in the forests tell a tale of the age when they were hurled around by giants. Or was it perhaps the ice age?

By the open sea, it sometimes feels as though the sea and sky have blended together and you can no longer tell where one ends and the other begins. The surface of the sea reflects and intensifies the glimmering light from the sky, creating delightful colour displays that seem to reach far into the mainland. At times, the northern lights travel across the sky with colours that take your breath away. All you can do is quietly admire nature at its best, and let your soul rest. ISOKYRÖ is famous for its entrepreneurs. Interesting historical sites are hidden along the river. This is the place to explore the historical roots of Ostrobothnia! If you’re looking for entertainment, don’t miss the famous Kalliojärvi Centre and its camping site. IN KORSHOLM, you will find Finland’s longest bridge (1,045 m), which connects Replot island to the mainland. Most of the UNESCO World Heritage Site (Kvarken) is located in the Korsholm archipelago. Korsholm is also home to the Söderfjärden meteor crater site and the museum and cultural centre in Stundars. KORSNÄS is the westernmost municipality on mainland Finland and was completely underwater 2,000 years ago. Today, the small and vibrant Korsnäs is famous for its namesake sweater, as well as its entrepreneurial spirit. KORSNÄS.
LAIHIA is well-known across Finland for jokes about its stingy residents, and the town is now home to the Museum of Stinginess. This vibrant rural municipality offers amazing opportunities for physical activities. Visitors to MALAX can enjoy its nationally famous bread, as well as local meat and fish delicacies. You can experience authentic life in the archipelago on Bergö island, in the summer you can go dancing in Åminne Folkpark, and stay in a cottage on the Åminne Stugby camping site. NÄRPES is famous for Finland’s red gold, its tomatoes. But there is more to Närpes than tomatoes; visitors are also treated to a range of cultural and nature experiences. The Gåshällan nature reserve will help visitors to forget their everyday worries, and there are plenty of summer events to choose from at the Fagerö amusement centre. VÖRÅ hosts many sporting events and offers visitors plenty of outdoor activities and museums on local history – the Battle of Oravais was fought here in 1808. Active local associations ensure a packed calendar of cultural events.

THE KVARKEN ARCHIPELAGO WORLD HERITAGE SITE Welcome to an area under continuous change – the rockiest archipelago in the world! The Kvarken Archipelago is Finland’s only Natural Heritage Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. You can visit a landscape moulded by the ice age, and rising from the sea, all year round. To grasp the true spirit of the world heritage, join a guided tour or trip. In the summer, we recommend a cruise to the Mickelsörarna or Valsörarna islands. In summer 2018, a new visitor centre, The World Heritage Gate, will open at the foot of the Replot Bridge serving Finnish and international visitors to the World Heritage Site. Visit our website for more information on the Kvarken, and on facilities and events in the area. Welcome!
