Wasaline takes you across the Kvarken strait every day Two countries, two cities and the beautiful Kvarken Archipelago in between. Wasaline carries hundreds of passengers between Umeå and Vaasa every day with its ferry M/S Wasa Express offering a variety of restaurants and events. The special ambience attracts people onboard the ferry over and over again. The secret behind the unique atmosphere is a combination of the best parts of the Finnish and the Swedish culture with an international twist.
Shopping is another essential part of the Ferry trip. It’s always fun to make great finds in the shop on board. In addition to the usual perfumes, sweets and cosmetics, there are also other interesting and surprising products for sale — and of course gifts and souvenirs. The cruise programme on board is inspired by both sides of the Kvarken. Enjoy a daytime dance with live music and guest artists or belt out your favourite song at the karaoke.
One way to feel the atmosphere is to learn more about the delicious food served in the restaurants on board. The delicious, highquality ingredients carefully selected by the chefs come from local producers on both sides of the Kvarken and are served in the à la carte restaurant, café and the Archipelago Buffet. The seafood delicacies served as starters are the highlight of the entire voyage for many people, while others are delighted by the wide range of desserts offered. The beautiful scenery of the Kvarken Archipelago makes every meal a one of-a-kind experience.
For children, the sea voyage in itself is a memorable experience. There are daily children’s programme on board at the ship mascot Wenni is on hand to delight young passengers during the summer season. The panoramic windows are great for spotting idyllic lighthouse islands along the route while the sun deck is a perfect place on sunny days to wave at boats passing by. If the children get tired of the scenery spotting, the playroom on deck 7 is worth a visit or play a fun Air Hockey tournament with the family outside the playroom. At the end, the nearly 4-hour cruise will feel much too short!!

Is that a pike or a perch on the hook? Finland’s best place for local fishing 2019 In the Vaasa region, you can go fishing close to the city centre or further out in the archipelago. A lot of effort has been put into the quality of the fisheries and the catches are usually excellent. Perch is the most likely fish to take your bait, but pike and zander are also abundant. Vaasa was recognised as the best place for local fishing in Finland in 2019, proving what the locals already know: the opportunities for urban fishing are second to none!
12
Examples of great spots for urban fishing in Vaasa include Vaskiluoto, Palosaari and Sundom. There’s also a newly built fishing pier in Onkilahti that is accessible for people with physical disabilities. Pack your gear and hit the local fishing spots. They are easy to reach by bicycle and on foot. www.vaasa.fi/en/fishing
Fishermen’s village The outer islands of the Kvarken Archipelago offer fishing enthusiasts great catches and breathtaking scenery. Point the bow of your boat towards the port of Svedjehamn and enjoy the natural beauty of the archipelago. The best fishing waters are found around small islands and rocky islets. You can also visit the old fishing port of Bodbackan, which was used to carry mail across the Kvarken strait to Umeå some 100 years ago. The outermost group of islands, Valsörarna, is only about 10 nautical miles from Sweden.
The table is set
Visiting the restaurants and local food shop in Vaasa’s Kalaranta is an easy way to sample the region’s seafood delicacies. Fresh locally caught fish is always available. At the House of Fishing, you can also find fishing-related information and learn about the fishing industry in Ostrobothnia. An especially good time to visit the Kalaranta is Fishery Day in June. The event is organised a stone’s throw away in Sisäsatama.

Spending time with loved ones is what a holiday is all about. The sea and the archipelago provide a wonderful setting for a family vacation.
Welcome to Paradise Island! What do you think of when you hear the words “paradise island”? Brightness, warmth, relaxing together, a tropical climate and playing in the water. In Vaasa, you can find a tropical ambience all year round. Tropiclandia Spa is located on Paradise Island, very close to the centre of Vaasa. It’s easy to reach by car or bicycle or by foot. With the temperature set at above 30 degrees Celsius, you can enjoy the warmth of the tropics any time of the year. In the summer, you can also spend time in the outdoor water park.
18
The slides and pools have warm water and the sun deck offers a beautiful view of the sea. You can easily spend an entire day in Tropiclandia, so you’ll want to take an occasional break to refuel. The pool bar serves refreshing beverages and tasty snacks. There is also a restaurant with larger meals on the menu. On hot summer days, the sun deck is a big favourite among the visitors — at least the adults. Children might choose to go down Freefall or Surfing Hill one more time instead.
What’s the best thing about Tropiclandia? The Lahdenperä family lives in Vaasa and visits Tropiclandia almost every week, so they know the place very well. Katja Lahdenperä says it’s easy to spend time at Tropiclandia with children of various ages. “This has become a way for our family to spend time together. The kids always look forward to coming here,” she says. The older brothers, Veeti and Atte, splash around the deep end or frolic in the waves created by the wave machine. Their younger
brother Eetu prefers the shallow pool for now, but he is already dreaming of his turn on the exciting water slides. Occasionally, the whole family relaxes in a whirlpool or sauna. Katja’s recommendation for first-timers is to take their time, see what the park has to offer and, for example, take a refreshing dip in the cold water pool or challenge yourself by swimming against the stream in the artificial river.
Top Camping
Sweet dreams by the sea Top Camping Vaasa is an excellent accommodation option for visitors who want to be centrally located by the sea. The camping site has cottages as well as places for caravans, motorhomes and tents. During the summer season, the Lilliputti train runs between the city centre, Tropiclandia and Top Camping, making all of the services easy to reach.

Finland’s only Natural Heritage Site invites you for an adventure
Three tips for an adventure in the archipelago 1. Valsörarna islands leave
a long-lasting impression! Experience the stunning nature, learn about the islands’ fascinating history and see the red lighthouse that resembles the Eiffel Tower. Day cruises to the islands are organised during the summer season and guided tours are also available. 22
2. Svedjehamn on Björkö has
something for everyone: climb up the Saltkaret observation tower for a great view of the unique moraine landscape, hike on the nature trails and take a break on the shore to eat a packed lunch. Rent a bicycle and reward yourself with a meal at the seaside restaurant.
3. In Molpe
you can rent a kayak or join a guided trip. Kayaking is a lovely way to experience the World Heritage Site up close, right on the sea. Molpe is a paradise for active people who love the sea and nature.
Did you know that the landscape you’re looking at wasn’t the same a century ago? The unique Kvarken Archipelago is Finland’s only Natural Heritage Site on the international UNESCO World Heritage List. In the Kvarken Archipelago, the freshness of island nature, the atmosphere of idyllic villages and the rising rocky landscape are present everywhere. You can’t find anything like it anywhere else! There’s a lot to see and do in the area. You can explore on your own or join a guided tour.
At the World Heritage Gateway visitor centre, you can find tips on various places to see, which makes it a good starting point for a visit to the Kvarken Archipelago. The Gateway has information on the local attractions and hiking trails as well as summertime events, cruises and excursions. You should also check out the exhibitions at the Gateway. A landscape shaped by the sea and ice The land rises at a world record rate at this UNESCO World Heritage Site The Kvarken Archipelago is Finland’s only Natural Heritage Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The land area in the archipelago increases at a rate of one square kilometre per year, which corresponds to more than 150 football fields. The current landscape was shaped during the previous Ice Age, when the enormous ice sheet that covered Northern Europe pushed the land down by about a kilometre.

Follow the path of the Ice Age Nature trails by the sea, duckboards across a nature reserve or an art trail in an urban setting? The diverse nature in the Vaasa region has something for everyone. There are hiking trails in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and elsewhere in the region. Choose your route from the options below or look for information on other options online at www.vaasa.fi/en/naturetrail
Edvin’s trail 1.3 km, Vaasa • easy • you can see approximately 150 works of art by Edvin Hevonkoski along this trail • playground and barbecue area

If you paddle quietly, you might even spot some of the local wildlife, such as a white-tailed eagle, whooper swan, Eurasian otter or seal. Where the captain comes to relax Tim Sparv spends a lot of his free time in the Vaasa archipelago Tim Sparv, the captain of the Finnish national football team, is from Oravais near Vaasa. The team captivated the nation by qualifying for the Euro 2020 tournament for the first time in the history of Finnish football. Tim believes in the power of team spirit on and off the pitch. Supporting youth football and other children’s sports is important to him. He has already donated two artificial turf pitches to the Vaasa region, which are free to use by the public.

“In Vaasa, you have easy access to all of the services of the city, and you can reach your summer cottage by boat in less than half an hour.”
The best things about Vaasa
The archipelago “I have a summer cottage on Kuusisaari island. It’s where I go to relax. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to spend as much time there lately as I’d like to. The archipelago is something everyone should experience!”
Nightlife “On the rare occasion that I get to go out with my friends, the bars and restaurants in Vaasa are always a good time. I have spent a lot of fun nights at Office Sports Bar with like-minded people. It has an excellent vibe. You can’t beat the combination of sports, bad jokes and sea buckthorn shots.”
Ice swimming “The ice swimming club Vaasan Pingviinit has a sauna and ice swimming dock in Hietasaari. It’s an opportunity to go ice swimming in a fantastic environment and meet many different kinds of people. It’s just great!”

Life is supposed to be easy Just like in Strömsö Strömsö is a popular lifestyle show on TV. The first episode aired in 2002 and it has been the most popular show on Svenska Yle, the Swedish unit of Finland’s national broadcaster, since the beginning, making Strömsö a familiar setting for millions of Finns. The show is also aired in Sweden and Norway. Over the years, it has become a widely known symbol of creativity throughout the country. The hosts, Elin Skagersten-Ström and Jonas Sundström, show the viewers various household activities, such as cooking, crafts and gardening. Everything always goes comfortably according to plan on the show. It has even inspired the widely used saying “It didn’t go like in Strömsö”, which is something people say lightheartedly when things go wrong.
32
Is Strömsö real? The idyllic villa that serves as the set of the TV show is located in Vaasa and was built in 1852. Guided tours of the villa are available, and reservations for group visits are also accepted. The area and its beach is a favourite among local residents and tourists. Strömsö is situated in Västervik, about 10 kilometres from the centre of Vaasa. Always open to visitors, the area is a fine destination for a family bicycle trip in the summer. You can also get to the villa by car or a local Vaasa city bus. www.vaasa.fi/en/public-transport Information on guided tours and group visits is available online at: www.vaasa.fi/en/stromso-group-visit Strömsö is also used as the venue for various special theme days, so follow us on Yle Areena and Instagram for more details.

Big enough, but nice and compact An energetic day in the city Vaasa’s size makes it perfect for shopping. It’s big enough to have a sufficient selection for you, regardless of whether you prefer specialty shops, flea markets, retail chains or shopping centres. At the same time, it is small enough that you can easily experience it all in one visit. Thanks to the city’s idyllic cafés and over 100 restaurants, you’ll want to linger for a while when you take breaks from shopping.

If you’re interested in second-hand items, you should check out the many flea markets near the city centre. My favourites include the SPR Finnish Red Cross flea market, Comboliina and Toivon Tähti.

The Rewell shopping centre is celebrating a milestone anniversary Rewell, the best-known shopping centre in Vaasa, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Over the years, it has become a landmark thanks to its restaurants, services, shopping opportunities and events. Located in the heart of the city, next to the market square, the shopping centre is easy to reach. The vicinity of the Toriparkki car park has also helped Rewell maintain its popularity year after year. A central location and easy accessibility alone are not enough in the competitive world of retail. The secret behind Rewell’s continued success lies in its continuous development and the way it stays up to date with the trends of the retail industry.
A parade of brands
The shopping centre is an interesting mix of specialty shops, retail chain outlets and various service providers. Quality-conscious customers can find a great selection of popular brands, such as Minna Parikka, Tiger of Sweden, Efva Attling, Clinique and many other high-quality brands of fashion, cosmetics and jewellery. By maintaining a selection that follows the latest trends,
Rewell’s retail chains and independent entrepreneurs create a youthful and always evolving atmosphere. The shopping centre also offers great culinary experiences all through the day. From pizza to sushi, vegan food to meat and mocktails to specialty coffees, you can find everything you need to satisfy your hunger and thirst.
Events and history
The shopping centre will mark its milestone anniversary by organising various events. In autumn 2020, it will host a fascinating photo exhibition to shed light on its origins. The shopping centre’s roots can actually be traced back all the way to the early 1960s, when the shopping centre was built according to designs drawn up by the internationally renowned architect Viljo Revell. The ideas presented in the original concept drawings of covering the entire block were finally realised in 1990, when the Rewell Center went through a complete transformation and had a glass roof built over it. Ever since then, it has served as a centre for events and shopping and a living room for local residents and visitors alike.

Meetings you will remember Many of the region’s major events, conferences and business events attract visitors from near and far. The Vaasa region is known for its energy expertise. The annual Energy Week event, for example, attracts experts and company representatives from around the world. The energy and vitality that characterises the region is a constant source of innovation. This is also true of the Wasa Innovation Center, which is designed as a meeting place for experts representing various fields and industries. In a city where one in every five people you meet is a student, innovation also happens organically. Events organised by students bring together company representatives, students and other influencers in various fields. www.vaasa.fi/en/meetings

Exports account for more than 80% of the activities of the region’s energy companies The city has a total hotel capacity exceeding 950 rooms There are plenty of meeting and event venues for various purposes in the region. PowerPark – a land of fun and fairytales Did you know that in Ostrobothnia, in the flat landscape of Alahärmä, there is a land of fun where visitors have only one job: to have fun and experience thrills that will stay with them for a long time? The heart of PowerPark is the amusement park, with a wide range of rides to suit daredevils as well as those who prefer something a little less spine-tingling. Just walking around the amusement park is an experience in itself. You can go from the alleys of a small Italian town to an Austrianinspired Tyrolean milieu in the blink of an eye. A moment later, you can find yourself having lunch in a saloon in an American western town. While older children go from one ride to the

next, younger children can spend some time in Rolly the Troll’s fairytale world, for example. “Diverse attractions, good restaurants and friendly staff,” says PowerPark Director Mikko Kiviluoma, listing the ingredients behind PowerPark’s success. “PowerPark is a fantastic family destination because we have something for visitors of all ages. Our Park Guardian service has also been well received by our customers. The Park Guardians are PowerPark employees who can accompany children on rides that they are unable to go on alone,” Kiviluoma explains.
TOP 3 rides Thunderbird Thunderbird is the pride of PowerPark and it holds up as a favourite among visitors year after year. Ranked as the world’s 10th best wooden roller coaster, Thunderbird offers an incredibly smooth ride through tight turns, hills and drops.
Booster The eight-seater Booster has earned a place among the most thrilling rides in Finland. With top speeds reaching up to 100 km per hour, the ride features a 40-metre axle with seating for four people at each end.

Junker The most spine-tingling roller coaster in Northern Europe, Junker accelerates faster than an F1 car. After the initial acceleration, the Junker takes you on a gravity-defying climb rising nearly vertically to a height of 40 metres above the flatlands of Southern Ostrobothnia. The ride then drops through a tunnel under a pond and up again. A ride on the Junker will leave an impression on even the most daring roller coaster enthusiast.

KYRÖ DISTILLERY COMPANY SAT 12–19. DURING THE SUMMER SEASON TUE–FRI 12–19, SAT 12–00 OLTERMANNINTIE 6, ISOKYRÖ
The unlikely idea for Kyrö, a Finnish all-rye distillery, was conceived in a sauna, fueled by a sip (or two) of rye whisky. The five founding friends embarked on an adventure of a lifetime, capturing the same spirit of naked ambition in everything they distill. The distillery found a home in the old dairy building in Isokyrö. The distillery restaurant offers distillery tours, tastings and cocktails. Dinner packages can be arranged for groups by advance reservation. Visit our website for more information!

Tankar is the pearl of Kokkola’s outer archipelago Tankar is a fascinating lighthouse island in Kokkola’s outer archipelago. It offers visitors unforgettable nature experiences and an oldtime islander atmosphere. For centuries, the island of Tankar has provided shelter for fishermen and seal hunters. The island’s pilot station used to be instrumental in leading ships into the Port of Kokkola.
Exciting stories and great experiences in nature The old fishermen’s cottages and the café amidst them form an attractive island village for visitors to explore. At the seal hunting museum, you can learn about the history and culture of the coast. Let your imagination roam free and imagine yourself in the life of the lighthouse keepers, pilots and fishermen of the past! The harbour is the starting point for a one-
kilometre nature trail that takes you closer to the island’s stark and beautiful nature. Tankar is home to about 180 plant species, and nearly 260 bird species have been spotted there. Sheep also pasture on the island during the summer.
Come for a day trip or spend several nights You can visit Tankar on a day trip, but the best way to experience the island’s unique atmosphere is to stay there overnight. The salty wind, silence and watching the waves in the beam of the lighthouse makes for an unforgettable experience. You can stay overnight at Tankar Inn Hostel, the guest cottage in the fishermen’s village or the Lighthouse Keepers’ House. The most atmospheric of the accommodation options is the old log house at the foot of the lighthouse. The lighthouse keepers Sund, Mattsson, Harald and Lindell once lived there. Whose room will you stay in?
M/S Jenny operates regularly between Kokkola and Tankar during the summer season. Distance Vaasa–Kokkola 120 km · 1 h 15 min
