FEEL THE PULSE In a city that is bigger than its size would suggest, jumping from one type of atmosphere and event to the next is easy.
INSPIRATION FROM NATURE Nature around the Vaasa region provides photographer Christoffer Björklund with both an inexhaustible source of subjects and inspiration for practising his whole profession. A perfect glassy calm, peacefully lapping waves, or mighty whitecaps in a storm – whichever side of its fickle nature it shows, photographer Christoffer Björklund always finds the sea to be a fascinating subject for study. “It’s hard to explain the attraction the sea has for me. I have always been interested in nature, and I have spent time sailing and trekking in the wild since childhood. Photography did not come along until later, when I realised that the nature around Vaasa is an endless source of inspiration,” says Christoffer. For visitors to the region, Christoffer also recommends combining photography with spend-

ing time in nature. Idyllic fishing ports with their boathouses, rocky shores, and ruggedly beautiful vegetation form the best part of the coastline. In the countryside, meanwhile, lush forests and fertile flatlands come into their own. “There you’ll also find the best spots for photos of the Northern Lights,” Christoffer notes. According to Christoffer, the seasons play no part in when to explore or photograph nature. “Certainly the summer lends itself to pretty pictures of landscapes, but I prefer a more dramatic style and favour winter and autumn as the seasons for photography,” says Christoffer.

GET AROUND & PHOTOGRAPH TIPS FOR TRAVELLERS CHRISTOFFER BJÖRKLUND Svedjehamn and the Saltkaret observation tower The area has hiking trails of many different lengths, and the observation tower offers breathtaking views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The light around here is also often favourable for photography. Sommarö fortress in Södra Vallgrund. Occupied by the armed forces until 2000, the area combines nature and history. The nature trail around the fortress features both bunkers and old ruins, as well as a gloe lake and sheltered beach. The sea water may not always be warm, but it is still worth taking a dip!
Valsörarna, Ritgrund, Rönnskär and many other lighthouse islands around the Kvarken Archipelago offer possibilities for true adventures. The islands can be reached by private boat or on organised tours. In the winter, no boat may be needed if the sea ice is thick enough. Still, their location on the edge of the open sea and the unpredictability of untamed nature will require careful planning and expert advice on local conditions. So remember always to take the weather into account! More tips at www.visitvaasa.fi Share your pictures #visitvaasa

LANDSCAPES SHAPED BY ICE AND SEA The Kvarken Archipelago is Finland’s only Natural Heritage site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Along with the Swedish High Coast, it is a member of a global community comprising 46 World Heritage Marine sites. In the Kvarken Archipelago, land uplift is increasing the amount of land by one square kilometre each year, which is equivalent to more than 150 football fields. In 2,500 years, the shallow Kvarken threshold will create a natural land connection between Finland and Sweden. The landscape was shaped by the continental ice sheet, which covered large parts of Northern Europe and created a depression in the earth’s surface around one kilometre deep.

SEE FAR ON THE FLATLANDS Vast expanses of stunning flatlands can be found throughout the province. The vast lowlands and green fields that have risen from the sea over time stretch out to meet a calm horizon in all directions. Massive boulders scattered deep in the forests whisper tales of an age of giants hurling them around. Or was it perhaps the ice age?

ENERGY THROUGH ICE SWIMMING Energy technology researcher Mahdi Hamidi believes renewable energy is the key to a sustainable future and wellbeing for both the environment and people. “Energy and technology offer us many things, but even more important is establishing a connection to nature. Diving below a frozen sea has taught me how ice swimming can connect the mind and body. The energy of nature and its balancing effects on human health are worth tapping into. Find more inspiring activities from page 58 onwards.

THE BEST FOOD IS SIMPLE When the flavours and fresh ingredients are just right, complicated recipes are not needed. Instead, the food is enjoyed simply as it is. Potatoes and tomatoes ripened by the long summer days need nothing special to accompany them. And the best kind of fish is fresh perch, fried in butter until golden brown. So says Isabella Asplund, entrepreneur and founder of the Köttdisken deli. Located in Malax, the majority of products at Köttdisken come from local farmers and fishers. For visitors in the Vaasa region, Isabella recommends Sundom smoked fish. It is a delicacy loved by locals and well-known outside the region.
“Smoked fish is an easy basic ingredient, and can be used on a sandwich as such, for example. One tip is to enjoy it outdoors, such as on a picnic by the sea with a good local beer, for a heavenly culinary experience,” says Isabella. Enjoying good food is easy in the Vaasa region, as there are plenty of locally produced, quality ingredients available in shops, marketplaces, and restaurants. Isabella’s latest project is opening a new deli, Fiskdisken, in central Vaasa in summer 2019, which will sell fresh fish and homemade food.
Read more about delicious memories from page 37 onwards. 24

Korsholm
HIDDEN STRAWBERRY FIELDS ISOKYRÖ is famous for its entrepreneurs. Interesting historical sites are hidden along the river. This is the place to explore the historical roots of Ostrobothnia. If you’re looking for entertainment, don’t miss the famous Kalliojärvi Centre and its camping site. KORSNÄS is the westernmost municipality on mainland Finland and sits on land that was completely submerged just 2000 years ago. Today, the small and vibrant Korsnäs is famous for its namesake sweater, as well as its entrepreneurial spirit.

LAIHIA is well-known across Finland for jokes about its stingy residents, and the municipality is now home to the Museum of Stinginess. This vibrant rural municipality offers amazing opportunities for physical activities. In MALAX, visitors can experience authentic archipelago life on the island of Bergö. In the summer, Åminne Folkpark and Åminne Holiday Village offer dancing and cottage living. In Åminne is also the largest boat museum in Finland. Malax is also known for its locally produced food.

Korsholm is also home to the Söderfjärden meteor crater site and the museum and cultural centre in Stundars. NÄRPES is famous for its red gold, tomatoes. But there is more to Närpes than tomatoes; visitors are also treated to a range of cultural and nature experiences. The Gåshällan nature reserve will help visitors to forget their everyday worries, and there are plenty of summer events to choose from at the Fagerö amusement centre.
Vörå
VÖRÅ hosts many sporting events and offers visitors plenty of outdoor activities and museums of local history – the Battle of Oravais was fought here in 1808. Active local associations ensure a packed calendar of cultural events.

The park-like walkway in Espen could almost be described as the sixth esplanade in Vaasa.

A part of the special atmosphere in Espen is certainly due to the fact that the centre is formed of five architecturally fascinating buildings, some of which date back to the early 20th century. We have no doubt that history itself would tip its hat to the modern Espen! Welcome to Espen! 53
