Living the dream in the Vaasa region E D I TO R I A L

The Vaasa region is known for its energy technology cluster, and for a good reason. Here you'll find over 10.000 employees who spend their days thinking up energy solutions; that is Âź of the workforce of the entire Finnish energy industry.

Vaasa Region Tourism Ltd Max Jansson, Managing Director +358 40 533 5083 max.jansson@visitvaasa.fi

However, as we all know, every source of energy needs to be recharged once in a while. This is the place where you can recharge your batteries. Whether it is through nature, culture, activities or events, you will find it here. For example, we have the Kvarken archipelago, the only Finnish Natural Heritage Site on UNESCO's World Heritage List, as well as numerous concerts, happenings and activities for the whole family. For more up-to-date information, check out our website and enjoy www.visitvaasa.fi.

In Korsholm, you can experience what life was like in a traditional rural village in the 20th century. Stundars, in Solf, is a cultural centre and one of the biggest open-air museums in Finland. A trip back in time to an old-time village at Stundars

Stundars is open all year round. Each year, the museum has a different theme, focusing on a different year. In 2017, Stundars will be reliving 1917 in honour of the centenary of Finland's independence. In the summer, Stundars offers a packed programme and the whole village comes to life. Experience a journey back in time and, every now and then, you’ll also come across local villagers role-playing their lives in the rural villages of the early part of the 20th century. You can also join the villagers in their chores, such as baking, haymaking, laundry washing or, say, traditional games. Stundars also gives you the chance to experience a genuine elementary school lesson, held during the summer season every day at 13:00. The museum grounds are also home to livestock, such as pigs, calves and hens. At Stundars, art fans can admire the art exhibitions at the Hemmer´s house, where various

superb paintings on the stone walls and stroll along the church’s dignified central aisle. The first church on this site was built as long ago as 1304. The church district has been at the centre of many historical events in Finland. The inhabitants of the larger parish of Pohjankyrö gathered over the centuries at the stone church, both to hear the Gospel and to do business. You can experience the genuine old-time atmosphere at Isokyrö’s 18th-century fair held each year in August next to the stone church. Handicraft workers from all over Finland meet here to sell their traditional ware. This authentic old-time fair takes place this year from 11th to 13th August. History is also to be found in the surging River Kyrönjoki, which you can cross by taking the Perttilä suspension bridge, built in 1910, the oldest bridge of its kind in use in Finland. On the opposite bank of the river, you can drop into the old and charming former Oltermanni dairy, now home to the world-renowned Kyrö Distillery Company. Here your party can take a tour of the distillery to discover how Isokyrö rye and herbs are transformed into the finest Finnish export products. The annual Sirpistä Puimuriin (agricultural machinery) and Napuefest (food fair) events are also held in the grounds of the dairy.

Entertainment and cars If you get the itch to go dancing, you can also have a swing round on the dance floor at Isokyrö. The province’s best known crowd pullers are the legendary Pukkilansaari Island and Kalliojärvi Entertainment Centre. Along with the SF-Caravan Lukkuhaka campsite, there are snug cottages in the camping area on the shores of Lake Kalliojärvi. Kalliojärvi Entertainment Centre also offers restaurant services and summer theatre productions and a minigolf course. The annual Härkäjuhlat and Bluesfestarit are among the events held on the Pukkilansaari dance floor. The Tervajoki “car city” located within Isokyrö municipality is famous throughout Finland as a centre for the car trade, where thousands of cars from all over the country are sold annually. In 2017, Isokyrö will also be hosting a number of events to mark the centenary of Finland’s independence. For more information on these, click www.isokyro.fi.

Rajavuoren Erä- ja vaelluskeskus is a centre for nature lovers, which offers a great range of lean-to shelters, hiking routes, service buildings, a sauna and outer room with a cosy fireplace, as well as an observation tower with a magnificent view. One of the many advantages of roaming in nature is the fact that it’s free! That’s why nature trails are very popular also with the residents of Laihia, who are known for their penny-pinching…

The funniest museum in Finland Every Finn knows Laihia for its reputation as the home of the most frugal people in the country, and there are countless jokes to support this image. The humorous Nuukuurenmuseo, i.e. the museum of stinginess, presents the history behind Laihia’s nationwide penny-pinching fame and explores where this phenomenon originated. Presented with plenty of humour and originality, the museum exhibits, for example, worn-out articles and items made in Laihia as a joke, such as a ladle with a hole in it and a stretched euro coin. In August, Laihia celebrates its Stinginess Week, which incorporates various entertaining events. The Nuukuurenmuseo Museum is situated close to the Laihia Museum. To learn about the Ostrobothnian way of life in the old days, visit the Laihia Museum, located at its original site around a traditional Ostrobothnian farmyard. The atmospheric museum area consists of 16 buildings, the oldest of which dates back to 1731. The museum's exhibition comprises more than 5,000 artefacts to help visitors to experience life as it used to be. In Laihia, you can also explore the old garrison area and the old Captain’s House. In the late 19th century, when Finland was an autonomous part of the Russian empire, Hulmi in Laihia housed the 10th Reserve Company’s garrison. Only the Captain’s House and the Hulmin Puisto Park along Highway 3 remain of this garrison that operated from 1881 to 1900. If you’re interested in stylish architecture, visit the neoclassical Laihia church that was built in 1805. Laihia also boasts the beautiful, old original Ruto stone bridge built in 1852, which is well worth a visit. And don’t forget the straw bale castle, which has been widely discussed in the national media, as well as the Huittu chapel and dwellings of times past.

You can spend the night in the old pilot residence Docket, which has been refurbished as accommodation.

Finland’s largest boat museum Åminne is home to the largest boat museum in Finland, exhibiting more than 90 wooden boats. The Kvarken Boat Museum also includes more than 100 marine engines and about 3,000 other fascinating artefacts. The surroundings of the riverside museum with its traditional boathouses is well worth seeing for its atmosphere alone. The local museums of Malax also have atmospheric farmyards. The stories told by old artefacts and buildings make them a fascinating destination. The Brinken and Petalax Local Museums are just two of the area’s resorts that describe life in days gone by. In Malax, you can visit three different churches. The bell tower of the Malax church was designed by the famous architect C.L. Engel. The Petalax church is a cruciform wooden church built in 1805. The island of Bergö has its own church too, which was built in 1802 by the villagers themselves.

Delicious food and exciting events by the sea Located on a fabulous site by the sea, Åminne Folkpark offers activities for every taste. In the summer, you can dance in a traditional outdoor dance venue and participate in various shows, celebrations and events. For other entertainment and delicious food, there is also the Åminne summer restaurant, miniature golf, a fabulous beach, terrace and disco. Just a short walk from Åminne Folkpark you will find the Malax Strandservice restaurant, which also sells fuel for boats, and the Kvarken Boat Museum is not far either. Åminne Stugby is a camping site with excellent accommodation: you can stay in cottages of various types and sizes, or camp in your tent or caravan. The Åminne area is a summer paradise for the whole family, with delicious food, a relaxed atmosphere, plenty of history and gorgeous sea views.

where you can learn about the life of a fisherman’s family at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum consists of the Harrström cottage and boathouses. At the highest point of the Harrström village, on the Kvarnbacken hill, stands one of the largest windmills in Finland, along with a smaller one. Built in the 19th century, they are still in working order and stand on their original sites. In the farmyard of the Korsnäs Local Museum there are several buildings that radiate the dignity brought by time, such as the peasant house, the blacksmith’s workshop, granary, an impressive windmill and three stables meant for churchgoers. There is also a parsonage in the area, dating back to the 1830s, which today acts as the Parsonage Museum, where you can admire the era’s stylish decor and lovely park. Beautiful architecture can be seen in the neoclassical Korsnäs church, built in 1831. The church has an unusual and exceptional altar, which is located almost in the middle of the church instead of by the end wall.

Fresh fish at a seaside restaurant You can enjoy a delicious meal and a magnificent view of the sea on the most beautiful spot in Korsnäs, right by the sea and close to the small-boat harbour. Located in the village of Molpe, Restaurant Strand-Mölle is a great place for fresh fish caught by local fishermen. They serve lunches and various mouth-watering à la carte meals. The restaurant also organises various events, such as pub nights with live music. It has excellent meeting and sauna facilities that also serve well as a party venue. At Strand-Mölle, you can also buy a special, memorable fishing package, including a guided fishing trip with all the necessary equipment, a relaxing moment in the seaside sauna and dinner at the restaurant.

Unique island formation Korsnäs is the home of Molpehällorna, a unique and stunning area consisting of four islands, which have coalesced into one as a result of land uplift. The archipelago has diverse wildlife and is a great place to let your mind rest, while admiring the tranquil scenery. There are various trips available to the archipelago, which offer a fantastic opportunity to enjoy its rugged landscapes and the sea air. You can also visit the Moikipää Nature Station which used to be a coast guard station.

Närpes is famous for its production of tomatoes and other vegetables. You can acquaint yourself with local cuisine by eating, say, at the greenhouse restaurant. You can take a peek into Närpes’s history through several interesting sights, such as the 150 small church stables, where in the old days churchgoers left their horses during services.

As its name suggests in Swedish, Mittistan is a meeting place in the centre of town. This culture and conference centre at the heart of Närpes offers everyone lots to do. The Tomato Carnival and greenhouse restaurant The people of Närpes are connoisseurs of quality and good food, and so the town plays host to a variety of food-related events. The absolute highlight and special feature of the summer in Närpes is the unique Tomato Carnival. At this event, held from 7th to 8th July, people gather to meet their friends, to tour the market in the summer weather, to enjoy the atmosphere, and to partake of fine local cuisine. People stay on at the carnival for longer, too, since there are things to do well into the small hours! Read more about it at www.tomatkarnevalen.fi. Närpes’s specialities also include the Linds Kök greenhouse restaurant. In this unique eatery, you can dine under citrus trees surrounded by herbs and tomato plantings. Meals are prepared, of course, using lots of local ingredients. For more on the restaurant, check out www.lindskok.fi.

Gems of history and things to see and do Located alongside the mediaeval stone church, the historical church stables, some 150 of which have survived, are among the unique historical treasures of Närpes. The well tended and beautiful churchyard combined with its surroundings and buildings are well worth a visit. Also within walking distance of the church is Öjskogsparken, a place of great natural beauty, replete with museum buildings and a summer theatre and auditorium. Närpes is also your base for exploring the archipelago by taking a trip to the Gåshällan nature reserve, a former coastguard station. Gåshällan Island is located in the beautiful outer archipelago, where you can experience the authentic feel of island life in the bosom of nature. If you are looking for things to see and do, you should head out to Fagerö Folkpark, an amusement centre by the sea, where you can try your hand at SUP surfing, beach volleyball and minigolf. It is a venue for popular dances, and you can dine at the Seaside summer restaurant by the harbour. For more information on the venue, see www.fagero.fi.

Outdoor recreation with stunning landscapes Vörå boasts the diverse Norrvalla Folkhälsan training and multi-purpose centre which hosts both large sports and cultural events. Campus Norrvalla has a hotel, restaurant, conference rooms, a sports institute and an upper secondary school focusing on sports. At the popular skiing centre near Norvalla, you can enjoy downhill or cross-country skiing in the winter and play golf or try roller skiing in the summer on the brand new track. In Vörå, you can hike in fabulous, clean landscapes on one of the region’s many hiking trails. Along the Vitmossen trail, you will find a relic from the Bronze Age and the Västerö hiking trail affords a fantastic view over the open sea. The Equity memorial is a reminder of arms smuggling during the Finnish War of Independence in 1918. The Ryssberget rocks looming in the background were named after the Russian ships that were shipwrecked here after striking the rocks in a storm in the autumn of 1714.

Museums for every taste Kimo Ironworks is the only ironworks museum in the Nordic countries and it is located in an iron storehouse built in 1763. The museum also offers smithery courses in the summer and autumn. Every year, on the first weekend in July, you can participate in the Kimo Smithery Day, which has a varied, entertaining programme on site, including smithery displays, an old-style market, music, tours and food. In Vörå, you can also learn about the history of photography at the Hägglund Photographic Museum which exhibits the equipment of photographer Erik Hägglund and a large collection of cameras. Hägglund photographed life in Ostrobothnia for 50 years. The museum's photos are organised by themes, such as working and celebrations. The Klemetsgårdarna Museum presents an idyllic group of wooden houses, with many fascinating sights in their farmyard buildings, such as a motorbike exhibition, textile exhibition and a pipe organ museum. Here you can also take a peek at a typical home from the 1940s. In the summer café, decorated in the functional style of the 1940s, you can enjoy a cup of coffee and delicious cake. The Klemetsgårdarna Museum also rents out cottages for various needs. The Vänrikki Stool Centre incorporates the historical area of the Battle of Oravais in 1808. The centre describes the Finnish War of 1808–1809 through various artefacts, stories, buildings and the battle field itself. The regiment’s military exercises, and shows with historical uniforms and weapons, bring history to life. By booking a guided tour, you can also find out why our national composer Jean Sibelius got married to his wife Aino in the former colonel’s residence, the Tottesund Mansion, in 1892.

Also, Finland’s longest bridge, from the mainland to Replot, is a popular angling spot for Baltic herring, starting in the spring. Whether you explore the coast by bike, boat or canoe, or if you’re into hiking, fishing or bird-watching, you are in for a real treat. Signs of the Ice Age in the Kvarken World Heritage site The Kvarken archipelago is the only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in Finland. Together with the High Coast in Sweden, it belongs to a worldwide community of a total of 46 World Heritage Marine Sites. In the Kvarken archipelago, the land is rising and creating a square kilometre of new land every year. In 2,500 years, the low underwater threshold between Finland and Sweden will form a land passage between them. The final touch to the present landscape was provided by the ice sheet in the last ice age, which covered an extensive area of Northern Europe and pressed the earth’s crust down about a kilometre. During the melting of the ice sheet 10,000 years ago, when the edge of the glacier was where the Kvarken region is today, the Baltic Sea was almost 300 metres deep. At that time, the land was rising fast, as much as several metres a year. Today the uplift is slower at approximately 8.5 mm per year.

Natural sites worth exploring The World Heritage Site has several spots where you get to explore the region’s wildlife, culture and geology. For example in Svedjehamn, in the village of Björköby on Replot, at the heart of the World Heritage Site, you can clearly see the way the land uplift has affected both the landscape and culture. Along the Bodvattnet Runt Nature Trail you will learn more about the uplift and will be able to observe the most handsome of the Kvarken’s washboard-like moraines, which can be clearly seen as long, lateral ridges rising from the sea. Today, the old Salteriet building houses a summer café and boat museum. Svedjehamn also acts alternately as the starting and finishing point for the annual Post Row. In the Post Row, participants row and sail traditional boats between Svedjehamn in Finland and Holmö in Sweden in honour of the inhabitants of the archipelago who for centuries carried post between the two countries. In the summer, you can participate in guided cruises to the Mickelsörarna and Valsörarna Islands and the Vaasa archipelago.
