AXO Takes Over the Happiest Place on Earth by Samantha WIlson Alpha Chi Omega’s Jennilee Pirtle was accepted into the prestigious business internship at Disney World in Orlando. She has been working in the Magical Kingdom for the past few months and will finish her spring semester working in various stores throughout the park while learning various business and human relation skills. The sophomore Alpha Chi explained what inspired her to apply to this unique program: “I’ve always loved Disney and this is the perfect way to get my foot in the door with the company. It’s also a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Jennilee is certainly experiencOne of Pirtle’s (left) achievements was creat- ing an educational, yet exciting ading this Mickey and Minnie Mouse plush wall. venture, for she gets to work along side beloved Disney princesses and Disney characters every day! Although she has had numerous memorable experiences from her trip already, Jennilee highlighted how going to the parks whenever she wanted has truly been the most exciting and fun aspect of her study job. She also explained how wonderful it is to be immersed in the Disney Culture because “the spirits of everyone at the park are so uplifting and truly happy”. Aside from all the fun and activities that she has experienced, she is also learning a number of skills involving interactions with guests and customer service. One of the main lessons she has learned is the importance of always resolving any conflicts with a positive attitude. Jennilee will be returning to Baylor in the fall to continue her pursuits as a business major and will be welcomed with hundreds of hugs and warm welcomes from her sorority sisters in Alpha Chi. Although Jennilee has been having the time of her life in Orlando, she explained how she misses being surrounded by her sisters with their constant encouragement and cannot wait to share all of her experiences with Alpha Chi and all of Panhellenic. Way to go Jennilee!
Kappa hosts Kendra Scott trunk show for RIF by Emily Hajovsky Each semester, Kappa hosts a trunk show featuring Kendra Scott, a nationally famous jewelry designer based in Austin. Every fall and spring Kappa teams up with Kendra Scott to help our philanthropy, Reading is Fundamental (RIF). RIF is a national charity dedicated to helping children across America become more literate at a young age to ultimately improve their futures. Twenty percent of all sales from the show go to RIF and at this semester’s show, we raised over $1,000 in proceeds to give to our philanthropy!

Dr. Seuss Night at South Waco Elementary by Emily Lyons
Pi Phis enjoy their time as Dr. Seuss characters at South Waco Elementary.
Pi Beta Phi teamed up with South Waco Elementary School to hold an event promoting literacy. The women agreed that there was no better way to promote such a cause than having Dr. Seuss as the main character, bringing a sentimental value to the event for several reasons. Not only was the purpose to raise an interest in reading for the students, but also this event strongly encouraged the parents to attend and engage in the activities with their child. By doing this, the event sought to promote parental involvement within South Waco Elementary and their child’s education in general. The women of Pi Beta Phi volunteered by helping set up and organize the event, dressing up as various Dr. Seuss characters, and reading to the students and parents alike. This event was not the first time Pi Phi has partnered with South Waco Elementary. With literacy being Pi Phi’s national philanthropy, a weekly program takes place at the elementary school called CAR (Champions Are Readers). Through this, each Pi Phi volunteer is assigned a “buddy” that they read and talk with weekly. With this relationship already established between Pi Phi and South Waco Elementary, Dr. Seuss Night was a unique way for Pi Phi to continue to promote literacy to the students and show just how fun it can be.

Tri Delta Alumna Spotlight: Cheryl Gochis
3
Theta’s shining star
by Claire Mosley
by Alex Alford
Cheryl Gochis is a Baylor University Tri Delta alumna who embodies the purpose of Tri Delta by establishing a perpetual bond of friendship with both her sisters in the Beta Tau chapter as well as on the Tri Delta national level. Today, Mrs. Gochis continues to serve Tri Delta on the Sarah Ida Shaw Committee on Tri Delta Nationals. She is a mom to three children, Drew, Jacob, and Hannah, and wife to Mr. Rich Gochis, a physical therapist at Baylor. Cheryl was a Tri Delta at Baylor University from 1988-1991. She served the chapter by being Vice President of Chapter Development as well as Chapter President. Her involvement with Tri Delta extended Gochis and her daughter, Hannah. outside the realm of fond Baylor memories with her Tri Delta sisters, when she served as a field consultant for Tri Delta National Headquarters upon graduation from 1991-1992. As a field consultant, Cheryl had the chance to see how far-reaching the bonds of Delta love, sisterhood, and friendship are among all chapters as she traveled across the country visiting and mentoring other chapters. Through her experience as a field consultant she developed very close friendships with other field consultants and was able to expand her perspective of Tri Delta through visiting other universities and meeting women in different chapters. One of the most rewarding things she took away from her time as a field consultant was the ability to develop rapport with others, which has been a valuable skill she has carried over into her career as the Director of Human Resources for Extraco Banks. The skills she developed as a field consultant have impacted her life outside of Tri Delta in her relationships and career today. One of the most important things Mrs. Gochis learned from her involvement with Tri Delta is to value others and never miss the opportunity to collaborate. As an alumnae, she credits her Tri Delta experiences as a member and officer in teaching her more about collaboration and the importance of respect for others, skills she uses everyday in her role as an Human Resources Director. Mrs. Gochis has been in Human Resources/Corporate Training for 15+ years and feels so blessed to have a job where she can touch lives and have an impact on the corporate culture.

Introducing the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation by Martha Elizabeth Starr The Circle of Sisterhood Foundation is an organization whose mission is to help educate women in thirdworld countries in order to enable them to live lives free of discrimination and abuse. This goal is achieved through fundraising efforts at 162 campuses across the nation and 12 alumnae Panhellenic chapters. After learning about the Circle at SEPC this year, we want to make the Circle of Sisterhood Baylor’s official Panhellenic philanthropy because what they are doing is relatable to women everywhere. We believe every woman should have the chance to a better life, and education is the key to a better lifestyle for all. To learn more about the Cirlce of Sisterhood, visit their website: www.circleofsisterhood.org

GPA is a 3.97. Throughout her college life, Burns has maintained a steady stream of jobs. She not only works as a waitress, but is a tutor and SI. “Last semester I was a waitress at Chuys and this year I’ve been an Italian tutor for Baylor,” said Burns. “I’m also a research lab assistant for the Social Psychology department and I’ve recently been hired to be an SI for Intro to Psychology.” Burns is a psychology major and although she makes her grades seem effortless to those around her, she admits it can be challenging. “Balancing everything can be hard sometimes, but I just have to be cognizant when certain things need more attention at certain times than others and being able to manage my time so that all aspects of my life are balanced. Knowing when it’s time to study, when it’s time to work and when it’s time to hang out with my friends and have fun,” said Burns. Ironically, her ultimate goal is never to get all A’s, but rather, constantly striving to do her best. “The most important thing in making good grades is have the dedication and drive to perform to the absolute best of your ability, which can be hard sometimes,” said Burns. “But I have to remind myself to always try to do my best so that I won’t have any regrets on not giving school my all.” When it comes to grades, she admits it is okay not to be the best at everything. “I would tell someone who aims to get better grades just to try your best and be forgiving of yourself and know that no one can be expected to excel at everything, but find what you’re good at and stick to it. It’s more fun and easier that way when you enjoy what you’re studying and doing,” said Burns.

Chi Omega’s “A” basketball team pose with their coach, Odyssey Sims after their win at the championship game. Chi Omega’s “A” basketball team took first place in girls’ basketball this season. The team worked hard all season, aimed the highest, and accomplished an undefeated season. In the final game, they had Baylor Women’s Basketball player, Odyssey Sims, coach them and the majority of the Baylor women’s team was there to support and watch. “As a team, we worked really hard to get to the championship game. It all paid off in the end because we won and I could not be more proud of all my teammates,” said captain Becca Heins. Chi Omega is so proud of this team and their accomplishment. Intramurals have been such a fun way for everyone to grow closer as an organization. Look out for the rest of the intramural sports this semester and check out Chi Omega’s teams!
ADPi hosts Mom and Dad’s Days by Carin Johnson Twice a year, ADPi invites the parents of their members to Waco for a day of fun with their daughters. This year, Mom’s Day was in the fall. The members and their mothers spent the day at the zoo, where they took pictures and were given a picture frame to document their day’s adventures. The most popular attraction of the day was the lion, ADPi’s mascot. Equally popular was the bear habitat where ADPis and their mothers showed their Baylor spirit by putting up their bear paw and best Sic ‘Em’s. In the spring was Dad’s Day. This year, the members and their fathers went to Brazos Park East, where they spent the Michelle Culver and her mom at day throwing footballs and Frisbees, playing corn hole, or just taking a walk along Mom’s Day. the river as they bonded with their dads. The dads were given a special gift of a baseball hat that they could wear to show their ADPi spirit. Whether it be looking at the animals with Mom or walking along the water with Dad, these events help shape members into the women they are today.
Zetas raise awareness at Relay for Life. Zeta Tau Alpha took part in the university-wide event, Relay for Life, a fundraiser that is hosted by the American Cancer Society and is held all around the country. This event is one of Zeta’s major philanthropy events and members are asked to raise money for the American Cancer Society as well as participate in the event itself. This twelve-hour event started at 7 p.m. and ended at 7 a.m. the next morning. The event opened with local cancer survivors being honored and recognized for their strength in their personal battle. Various university clubs and organizations set up booths and tents on Fountain Mall. The night was filled with was live music, food, and activities for participants.

Order of Omega initiates its newest members Panhellenic greatly by Sara Stephens
appreciates our chapters’ advisors
by Caroline Nelson
Congratulations to the newest members of the Order of Omega. Twenty Greek life members were recently initiated into the Order of Omega society, a prestigious academic organization intended for students who have excelled in leadership, scholarship, and dedication in the Greek community. More than half are also members of the Panhellenic community, with women representing nearly all Baylor chapters. Inducted members described the initiation process as a unique ceremony, with each ritual item representing a letter of the Greek alphabet. “It was neat how we can all come together and become one organization,” Alpha Delta Pi member Sarah Wilkins said. Members’ duties include keeping up their academic record as well as attending monthly meetings. Baylor has some incredible women representing the Panhellenic community and we couldn’t be more proud.
Panhellenic celebrates National Badge Day by Anna Gold It isn’t every day that you see a sorority girl walking around campus wearing a pencil skirt, lacy top, and letters only on the small badge that sits over her heart. However, on the last week of February and first days of March this is what speckled the Baylor campus. During Badge Week each sorority is recognized for their badge on social media as well as all over campus in hopes of bringing awareness to Greek life and Greek involvement on campus. Each sorority was assigned a day on which their badge was honored. On this day members would dress in business-casual attire and wear their badge to class. Badge week not only serves as a way to spread awareness about Panhellenic, but it Panhellenic loves Badge Day! also allows members to reflect on the history of the sororities that are on campus and to recall the significance of the badge that they are wearing. It helps for the ladies in each sorority to remember that they are not only representing their chapter, but that they are also representing a legacy.
Mr. Henry, and his wife Priscilla, have selflessly given to the women of Tri Delta and the men of Pi Kapp. April is Advisor Appreciation month and Baylor Panhellenic would like to celebrate the amazing advisors that have served our chapters and made an impact on our members. Our first advisor is Mr. David Henry. Mr. David Henry is a beloved faculty advisor for both Delta Delta Delta and Pi Kappa Phi. In addition to his advisor position, he is a patent law lecturer at Baylor’s prestigious Law School, a professor in the entrepreneurship program (which is ranked second in the nation), as well as a full-time patent attorney. His involvement on the Baylor campus is unprecedented by the majority of faculty, and the source of his service is simply his unfailing love for the school and its students. He loves the ladies of Tri Delta and the men of Pi Kapp as if they were his own. He offers his home to be a quiet place away from campus to study, hosts regular gatherings at his home, and sincerely asks each person that walks through his front door how their busy college lives are going. In Tri Delta, he is known as Papa Henry, which perfectly attests to his fatherly character. According to Mr. Henry, loving on students is his way of giving to Baylor what it gave him over thirty years ago; he is committed to assisting his students in every possible way.

New Members shine at NM talent show by Sara Stephens On February 26th, over 350 new Panhellenic members from all eight chapters joined together for a night of entertainment and friendship as they watched their fellow sisters showcase their talents in the 2014 New Member Talent Show. Acts ranged from Kappa sisters roller-skating to the beat of “Say Something”, to the members of ADPi “letting it go” with a rendition of Frozen. After 17 lively acts, the women of Tri Delta prevailed as first place winners with members Meredith Bennett and Leah Beth Etheredge’s singing performance of “That’s Life”. Second place and winner of a Harts & Crafts gift card was Pi Phi’s own Carly Burke with a performance of “Don’t Rain on My Parade”, followed by ZTA’s Marissa New members showcased their tal- Mueller and Kelsey Stevens’ musical duet ents on stage at the NM Talent Show. to “You and I” by Ingrid Michaelson. The Significance of Unanimous Agreement X by Megan Graunke The National Panhellenic Council created Unanimous Agreement X in 2010 to protect the right of NPC member groups to remain women-only organizations. Unanimous Agreement X was enacted to protect the single-sex status of Panhellenic organizations. Title IX banned sexual discrimination in public and private educational institutions, but social fraternities were exempt from this piece of legislation. In order to continue to operate as single-sex organizations, we must demonstrate the ability to recruit, educate, and maintain our members without the help of other organizations including those of the opposite gender. What does this mean for Baylor’s campus? In fall of 2014, women who are members of Baylor Panhellenic organizations may not participate in men’s recruitment events. Any event(s) where potential new members for men’s organizations are present shall prohibit the involvement of Panhellenic women. These events include but are not limited to smokers, coffees, skeet shoots, barbecues, cook-outs, sporting events, dinners, etc. Men’s groups are defined as all IFC fraternities, local fraternities, and independent fraternities established as single-sex organizations at Baylor University. In spring of 2015, women who are members of Baylor Panhellenic organizations may not wear shirts or other paraphernalia specifically in promotion of one men’s group unless these shirts are tied to an event in which women are participating and present. Shirts that may be worn include but are not limited to any created for date functions, mixers, philanthropy events, etc. Shirts that are not permitted include but are not limited to men’s group recruitment shirts or fraternity shirts that do not pertain to any event or function as listed above. Also, in compliance with UA X, auxiliary organizations such as little sisters are not open to women who belong to Panhellenic member organizations. Women who belong to Panhellenic member groups may still serve as sweethearts though, but should not be considered voting members of groups for which they are sweethearts. Baylor Panhellenic will comply with NPC UA X by enacting these rules. For more information, please visit: http://www.npcwomen.org/resources/pdf/Unanimous%20Agreement.pdf

Theta’s Haley Davis to advocate for Greek life in Washington, D.C. by Megan Graunke Haley Davis of Kappa Alpha Theta will be in Washington, D.C. to advocate for the benefits of Greek life, as well as a bill called CHIA. CHIA is a bill that advocates for government grants for Greek housing at colleges and universities. At many universities across the country, Greek houses are not up to fire and safety codes because they are owned by the organization and members are not able to keep the houses up-to-date due to the already high dues. This bill, if passed by Congress, will allow donations and government grants to be given to the organizations so they can keep their houses safe. The bill will not raise taxes or cost the government anything. Even though Baylor does not have Greek housing, I am still in support of this bill. Many of our sister schools in the Big XII do have housing that will greatly benefit from this. I am going to let my voice be heard as a huge supporter of how life-changing Greek life can be during a student’s college years and how it can be helpful in the future. Before my visit I have been preparing by gaining support of Baylor students and administration. Michael Blair, a member of Beta Theta Pi, and I have met with the student senate and passed a support bill for our issue. We have also met with Baylor’s Greek life advisors, Baylor’s director of government Davis relations, and Kevin Jackson, Vice President of Student Life. They have all agreed that even though Baylor does not have Greek housing, this is a good bill to support because it will help many other universities. I am so excited to travel to Washington in a couple of weeks and meet students from across the country and from all different Greek councils.
Panhellenic women to hold internships during Summer 2014 by Sara Stephens Summer is all about Netflix and vacation, right? Well for some women of the Baylor Panhellenic community, they have a few other ideas in mind. Here are just a few of the many Panhellenic women engaging in life-changing experiences this summer:
Hannah Dominguez, Alpha Delta Pi
I am an intern at Christian Women’s Job Corps. I work with clients and offer services for them. My favorite part is seeing how God transforms the hearts of these women with a lasting impact. I love being able to spend my senior year serving women and God at such an incredible agency. We work with women from all backgrounds and we provide two different programs. We offer a GED education program and a career track program, which teaches them job readiness skills.
Meghan Gahm, Kappa Alpha Theta
I’ll be interning with Dr. Tom Hein this summer at his dentist’s office in Colorado. As part of the internship I get to do various tasks include shadowing complicated procedures like tooth implants, learning and assisting with laser whitening, and advocating for oral health care in the community. I had this job last summer too and it has been rewarding, challenging, fun & eye-opening. It makes me excited for what my future holds. Dominguez
Jasmine Green, Pi Beta Phi
Green
Gahm I will be traveling to India this summer for five weeks with Children’s Relief International as an intern with five other students. We will be working alongside four different ministries in four different cities in central and southern India. They’ll consist of children’s homes, orphanages, Mother Teresa’s home for the dying, as well as the red-light district. We will have the opportunity to serve and read to prostitutes and children and ultimately provide them with ways to maintain a cleaner lifestyle. I’m so excited to serve the people of India in the best way that I know how by sharing Christ with those who don’t know Him and celebrate Him with those who do. To fundraise I designed and sold the t-shirt below. I also hand-knit infinity scarves and sell them on Etsy to help fund my trip as well. Check them out at www.etsy.com/shop/BearGreenRoots and help a sister out!
What will YOU be doing this summer?! Be sure to take lots of pictures and send them to Megan_Graunke@baylor.edu so that she can post them on the Baylor Panhellenic Facebook and Instagram pages. Have a great summer!!
