It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: “we have all made mistakes.” As Alexander Pope so aptly put it: “To err is human, to forgive, divine.” We should remember this the next time we make a mistake. Most certainly, we must learn from our mistakes, and hopefully not continue to repeat them, but we should also forgive ourselves. While it can be hard enough to forgive others for their mistakes, it can sometimes feel almost impossible to forgive ourselves. We sometimes cannot bring ourselves to forgive something we’ve done, and we may punish and harangue ourselves for years, or even decades, over youthful indiscretions. In addition, some of us may not be able to forget the sins of our past. And although that may prevent us from repeating them, we must be charitable and forgive ourselves, just as we should forgive others. So, we should make a real effort in the coming days and weeks to forgive the offenses of others as well as our own. Sometimes, it helps to just forget about them; that is, to try to put them out of our mind and stop repeatedly mulling over them. One of the reasons we use the phrase “forgive and forget” is because sometimes that is the only way to forgive, i.e., by forgetting. But far better, and more divine, is to be able to forgive even while remembering the offense. So, we should let go of those unforgiving, vindictive, shameful feelings about the past, and get over it! Corrie ten Boom, who survived incarceration in a Nazi prison camp said, “Forgiveness is to set a prisoner free, and to realize that the prisoner was you.” We invite you to worship with us! According to the Bible we all have a spiritual part of us that is invisible. It is called our soul. According to God’s Word, our soul will live forever. People dressed up in sheets with eye holes cut out are just pretending to be something that really does exist, but their caricature of a ghost is a far cry from reality. God Himself exists as a spirit. John 4:24 says that God is a spirit, and they that worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth. He does not have a body like you or me. Jesus

Your Will designates who will receive your worldly goods. Having a professionally drafted Will makes the transition at the time of your death as easy as possible for your loved ones. Some people believe a handwritten or self prepared Will is better than no Will. In some cases that may be true and in some cases it will cause more problems than it solves. A professionally drafted Will assures your grief stricken loved ones will have a smoother transition in the transfer of your estate at the lowest cost possible.

If Fitzgerald was right, look around Houston for people who are different. They are rich, and there are a lot of them. How many? This year we rank eighth among the top 20 cities in the world with the most millionaires. We know this because the Henley Global Report count ed up which cities had the most millionaires. To no one’s surprise, New York City had the most, then Tokyo and next is the San Francisco Bay Area with all those 20-yearold nerds in Silicon Valley. Then come London, Singa pore and, in sixth place, Los Angeles and Malibu. Chicago

with their money? Some give to politicians. Bob McNair, the late Texan owner, in 2016 donated $500,000 to at least four Republican presidential campaigns: Ted Cruz, Scott Walker, Lindsey Graham, and Jeb Bush. He also made “substantial” donations to forces opposing Houston’s Equal Rights Ordinance. The family has made major con tributions to local charities. Others in the past have con tributed to the city’s better ment. The donated Mecom Fountain, the George Brown Convention Center (his com pany donated six of the 11 blocks required to build it) and, of course, the Hobby and Bush Intercontinental Airports – nice gifts to the city from those families. Wes theimer is also State Highway 1093. It is the only road I can find which was donated to the city. M.L. Westheimer was an early entrepreneur who built a five-mile shell road from his home and busi nesses, far west of the city (we now call it the Galleria), into the town, then gave the road to Houston in1894. And thank you, LBJ, for donat ing the Johnson Space Cen ter. Howard Hughes did not try to buy the city’s naming rights so he could change the title to Hughes Town. That’s only a rumor I started. This next example wasn’t exactly a donation, more like a name grab. The Brothers Allen, a couple of Yankee developers,
ranks seventh and Houston comes in at eighth. Indeed in 2022, U.S. cities dominate the world’s top number in millionaires with six Ameri can cities listed. Incidentally, when it comes to billionaires, with 48, Texas ranks third be hind California with 124 and New York with 93.

Who are these rich people around Houston? Some may flaunt their wealth by zip ping through red lights, cut ting you off on the freeways and honking madly behind you because you don’t im mediately jackrabbit forward when the light turns green, all the while sporting a 100 Club sticker on the back windshield of their Lambo rghini Aventador. No, those are the new rich who, when oil goes to 50 cents a barrel, will be the new poor. Hous ton’s super-rich are usually quiet, kind and low profile. You could accompany a Re altor and drive down River Oaks Blvd. while she ticks off the names of the own ers of those huge mansions and you (and I) wouldn’t rec ognize a single name. They don’t need the publicity.

Some literary historians dispute this quote. Fitzger ald probably said, “Ernie, you’re too drunk to drive.” Hemingway probably replied, “I cansh…cansh drive. Uh, drive as well as….” Fitzgerald yelled, “TRUCK!”
He’s Elon Musk, who owns that electric car company Telsa. He is estimated to be worth $213.9 billion. Musk is now the richest person not only in Texas, not only in the U.S., but in the entire world. Musk could live anywhere, but he chose that sleepy fish ing village on the Colorado River, Austin. As the richest Texan, Musk replaces anoth er non-oily Texan who sells us toothpaste, soap and mo tor oil, but only by the quart: Alice Walton of Fort Worth, worth $51.4 billion. She is the only daughter of Walmart’s founder, Sam Walton. Among other Lone Star stars is Mi chael Dell ($32.3 billion), Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones ($8.6 billion), Hous ton’s own Dan Friedkin ($3.3 billion who owns Gulf States Toyota -- notice all those Toyotas and Lexuses around town), Janice McNair ($4 bil lion, widow of Bob McNair, owns the Houston Texans) and Richard Kinder ($7.5 bil lion, energy and pipelines). This makes Kinder the richest Houstonian. Incidentally, as for those super-rich Texans not getting wealthy from pe troleum. I once interviewed that old wildcatter Glenn Mc Carthy. I opined that, being a journalist, I wasn’t in his trade. “Son,” he said, “we’re ALL in the oil business.” I guess some of those shop pers at Walmart work for ExxonMobil.Whatdothese wealthy do
Not only in Houston, but we have a lot of rich people throughout Texas – those 48 billionaires with a net worth of $176.1 billion. Almost half derive their wealth from the energy industry. But the rich est Texan is not in the oil biz. Actually, he is trying to put that industry in mothballs.

Fall planting and plan ning is one of my favorite times of the year. For new gardeners, I always suggest beginning in the fall as it offers a wide variety of options with fewer issues regarding pest and Texas heat. If you are starting seeds indoors, now is the time to get started for many fall crops while direct sow and transplants have a little more time before they go in the ground.

For legumes you may direct sow in the begin ning of October. These grow fairly quickly and may be harvested in as little as six weeks.
Greens may be directly sown anytime in October. Lettuce varieties can be harvested in as little as 30 days, so I recommend succession planting with these as well. Kale and chard do well in cold temperatures and can easily last through the winter. In our climate kale acts as a perennial and chard as a biennial. Plan to place these in your garden where they will thrive well into the next

Since taking over the prac tice, Desai said Heights Der matology has now expanded to where the practice now has nearly 20 offices through out the state of Texas. It’s part of an effort, Desai said, to continue giving patients around the state the same quality of care that the flag ship clinic in the Heights has become sought after for.
