Welcome to the 37th Guide Those of you who have loyally read The Leader for decades know exactly what you’re holding. Those of you new to our newspaper may wonder what in the world this Guide is. This edition marks the 37th year in a row that The Leader has published a Guide to our area. From political contacts, to schools, to restaurants, to newcomer information, the Guide is designed to serve as just that – a starting point for some of the important (and entertaining) things to do in our community. But let’s not be naive about the value of such a product these days. Most of us, when we need a restaurant or a city council member’s phone number, run to the computer or smartphone, type in our search and get the information at the speed of 3 or 4G. So in this day

e We’r N E OP AYS 7D

JONATHAN MCELVY Publisher

of technology, is it really that important to publish a Guide such as this? Actually, we believe there is. For starters, we’ve included as many web addresses as possible in this edition. We’ve also been extremely clear about labeling every section of this edition. Most important, though, we’ve done something only a newspaper can do: We’ve tied a bow around the entire community. If you think about the

value of internet searches and social media, everything you do is what some call an “active” search. Sure, if you know you want to eat Italian food, you simply search for Italian food. What we offer in the Guide is a lean-back, passive sort of snapshot of our community. If you’ll take a read through these pages, you may discover something you never would have thought to search. Last – but certainly most important – you’ll find pages and pages of advertisers in this publication. There are advertisers in this edition who literally wait each year for the Guide to advertise their businesses. We appreciate those who support this publication and The Leader, and we’d ask our readers to shop locally with them every chance you get.

It All Starts Here: A jumping-off point for your neighborhood by Betsy Denson For The Leader

Shepherd Park Plaza http://shepherdparkplaza.com/

While the neighborhoods that encompass the Leader area all have their own unique vibe, they do share one commonality: Desirability. With easy access to downtown and the Galleria, quality schools, good neighbors and increasing retail and restaurant options in the immediate vicinity, northwest Houston continues to attract a steady stream of new residents, specifically families. Streets that haven’t seen a trick-or-treater in years now teem with them, and you’d be hard-pressed to find an empty playground on a weekend or pretty afternoon. Of course it’s not all Generation X, Y and Z. There is also a good mix of Baby Boomers and beyond, those who have already raised their own families here and choose to stay. The new parents have the same set of questions as their predecessors. Where do people send their kids to school? What is there to do for fun? For enrichment? Where is the loudest restaurant with the biggest tolerance for toddlers? There are multiple answers to all of the above, with more options being added all the time — so much so that an annual printed guide can only get you so far. That’s when you take advantage of the ever broadening social resources in the area, either in person or online. Many neighborhoods now have their own Facebook pages where information is traded freely and often. The following listings are a sampling of some of the resources, goods and services that are available in the area. Use it as a jumping off point. Then go talk to your neighbor.

The total transformation of Master Car Care That about sums it up in a nutshell. Master Car Care at 23rd and Yale has gone from “blah” to being rated rst in customer satisfaction and customer service. In 2008, Byron Rusk purchased the property at 2305 Yale, a landmark in the Heights since Moses wore short pants. The building that is now the ofce area was once a Chevrolet dealership, and over time it became an auto parts store that served the neighborhood, as well as the service department for Master Auto Service. When Byron purchased the land and buildings, he wanted to keep the charm of the airplane hanger-style, but update the building with new equipment and clean-up the appearance, both inside and out. Along with new equipment came a new staff, knowing that the previous owners (due to health reasons) had let the business fall into disarray. Byron knew the task of turning Masters around was going to be a difcult one so everyone he brought in to his business, from his service manager to each service advisor and shop foreman were perfect ts. One of the rst tasks of the new owner was to completely renovate the buildings, which included new paint, a general clean-up and removal of outdated stock. Ruben then went out and recruited his team. The collision center has more than 100 years of combined knowledge under one roof. The lead painter has been painting for more than 38 years; and the frame and body men are considered among the best in the industry. “I have seen these guys take cars that were total losses and make them look like new again,” said Byron. The art of good collision repair is not being able to tell that any work was ever done. Much like good plastic surgery, when collision repair is done right, it looks natural. After getting the right crew on board, there was one more hire to make — Roxann Ogden, Master Car Care’s ofce manager/Mother Superior. The challenge of turning Master Car Care into a rst-class business and a place where people are proud to do business wasn’t as hard as one might think. “All we did was the right thing,” said Byron. “We treat our customers with respect, we accept responsibility for our shortcomings if we should have any, and if there is problem, we run to it, not from it. “We believe in integrity, that means doing it right even when your the only one who watching to see if it’s right. We treat our customer like family. You can’t lose because family will always take care of family and family comes rst.”

Riding the technology wave reduces repair time, helps ecology What’s new at Master Car Care? What isn’t? Where do we start. If you haven’t been in lately, you haven’t seen our new digital LED sign out front. This new sign lets us communicate with the Greater Heights about what’s happening in the neighborhood and lets us present special offers to the public at a moment’s notice. Maybe if it’s raining cat and dogs, we will offer “buy one windshield wiper, get one free” specials. Now while the sign is exciting in itself, it is no match for our new equipment in our collision center. We have just purchased a new stateof-the-art frame measuring system called a car-a-liner. With this new equipment, we are now able to measure your vehicle before and after a collision to make sure your vehicle is repaired back to its original factory specications. This also helps us repair your vehicle faster. And we are now able to show your insurance company a computergenerated diagram of the exact tolerances that your damaged vehicle requires, which allows them to authorize the needed additional supplemental repairs without having to reassign an adjuster to reinspect the damages. This process shortens the cycle time and gets you back behind the wheel of your own vehicle. Last but not least is our brand new professional, down draft spray paint booth, the latest eco-friendly spray booth there is. With this new spray paint booth, we are the rst kids on the block with equipment that will be required when the government mandates the switch from painting with solvent paints to using waterborne paints. The waterborne paints are better for the environment and will leave less of a carbon footprint, and we here at Master Car Care want to do our part when it comes to saving the planet. This new paint booth will also help shorten the cycle time because we can bake the paint in a fraction of the time it now takes us. Then, once we start to shoot waterborne paint, the advanced cure system will allow the baking process to be a better color match than any process to date.

Neighborhood associations vital part of this community There’s nothing more grassroots than civic clubs and homeowners associations. They’re a chance for neighbors to connect about standards, safety and to deal with problems before they get out of hand. They can bring together families who have a common cause or problem and achieve results through the involvement of the many rather than the few. Civic clubs in Houston take on additional responsibility because the city has no zoning. Residents rely on civic clubs to preserve the character of their neighborhoods through the enforcement of deed restrictions. But as civic officers know, a neighborhood’s deed restrictions are only as strong as the membership’s interest. Over the years, civic clubs have worked with the police to organize neighborhood crime watch programs, and some neighborhoods band together to fund extra law enforcement patrols by private companies or the Harris County consta-

bles’ offices. To help you become more involved in vital civic affairs or programs that could enhance the quality of life in your neighborhood, The Leader provides the following directory of area civic clubs and representatives to contact for assistance.

Plenty of places to responsibly recycle household goods in neighborhoods The Solid Waste Management Department has recently opened a permanent electronics recycling drop-off site at 7700 Kempwood. A partnership between the City and CompuCycle, the site keeps potentially harmful materials, such as mercury, cadmium, lead, and cathode ray tubes out of the waste stream and the environment. Items accepted include PCs, servers, keyboards, mice, laptops, game consoles, monitors, small kitchen appliances, memory chips, hubs and routers, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, projectors, rechargeable batteries, cable boxes, car batteries, telephones, cell phones, PDAs, tape drives, hard drives, cords, cables and cameras. In addition to electronics recycling, this is now a drop-off for common household recyclables such as paper, plastics, aluminum and glass.
