HOUSTON ISD
Houston Independent School District encompasses 301 square miles within greater Houston and serves an enrollment of more than 203,000 students at 279 campuses. It is the largest public school system in Texas and the seventh largest in the United States. Dr. Terry Grier is HISD’s superintendent, and he is assisted by chief school officers to meet the specific needs of students in elementary, middle and high schools. These chief school officers lead teams that include school improvement officers that work directly with school principals. The district is organized within five geographic regions — North, East, Central, West and South — by feeder patterns composed of specific elementary, middle and high schools. However, families are free to
choose a school anywhere in the district, and HISD prides itself in a wide array of magnet, International Baccalaureate and charter schools that offer a variety of programs and specialties to suit a student’s aptitudes and interests. For options, go to the district’s School Choice section of its website at http://tinyurl. com/9rxldwf. The nine trustees of the board of education, elected to four-year terms from singlemember districts throughout the city, establish goals, policies and operating guidelines for Houston ISD. Anna Eastman represents Leader communities. She may be contacted at aeastman@houstonisd. org Board members are: Michael L. Lunceford, president; Eastman, first vice president; Juliet K. Stipeche, second vice president; Rhonda Skillern-Jones, secretary; Greg Meyers, assistant secre-
tary; Paula M. Harris; Lawrence Marshall, Harvin C. Moore and Manuel Rodriguez Jr., members. The board meets at 5 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at 4400 West 18th Street. Call 713-556-6005 or visit www. houstonisd.org for information.

Libraries some of the best With recorded books and Kindle and the decline of periodicals, libraries have had to reinvent themselves -- and have done a good enough job for branches to be thriving in Leader neighborhoods. Not only are they a place to borrow books in any form, but they serve as gathering places and a site for computer access, for classes for all ages and for reading clubs of all genres. By using their free Library Power Card that works in both the city of Houston Library System and the Harris County Library System, patrons can check out materials at any library from an extensive collection of adult and children’s books in various languages, videos, CDs, DVDs, books on tape, newspapers and magazines. Houston Police have ways to communicate with local residents The Houston Police Department has walk-in service or phone contact through two commands covering Leader communities, provides storefronts for more localized policing, and offers an increasing amount of services online at www. houstonpolice.org. The two larger stations still provide the bulk of the law enforcement coverage for Leader-area residents. The North Command Station is located at 9455 W. Montgomery Road and covers Leader-area communities above the North Loop. Capt. Duane Runyan heads the North Division. Call 281-405-5300 for information. The Heights area is served by Central Patrol out of the downtown HPD headquarters at 1200 Travis. Central Patrol covers Districts 1 and 2. •Residents should call 911 or central police dispatch at 713-884-3131 to report crimes in progress. Ad # 36062
•Residents can call police about being away from home on vacation or to make insurance reports by calling their respective commands. To alert police about being away from home on vacation or to make insurance reports, people in Districts 3 and 6 should call the North Police Station at 281-405-5300. In Districts 4 and 5, call 713-744-0900. •Residents can go online to check major situations in progress, to check on case status if they have a case number, and to submit an alert to explain a non-emergency situation that requires attention, such as extra patrolling. Community storefronts are staffed by police officers who interface directly with the community to fight crime by educating citizens on crime prevention. These officers provide a vital link between the police and the people by speaking at group meetings and providing Citizen Pa-
trol training, reporting on neighborhood crime statistics and distributing information brochures. •The Independence Heights Community Storefront is located at 803 Crosstimbers and covers the area south to Loop 610, north to Tidwell, east to Interstate 45 and west to North Shepherd. One officer, a sergeant and a civilian employee staff the station, which is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The phone number is 713-742-1491. •The Heights Community Storefront is located at 1127 N. Shepherd, just north of West 11th. Co-op’s, farmers’ markets keep area produce fresh Travis Co-Op is a partner of the Central City Co-Op and offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables at various prices. For more information, call Christina Cicack at 832-922-9755 or visit www. traviscoop.org. Travis Elementary is located at 3311 Beauchamp. Urban Harvest is a community organization that supports many small gardens in the Houston area and provides the food to many farmers markets around the city, including downtown, Highland Village, and the HCC West Loop campus. To volunteer or find a garden or farmer’s market near you, call 713-880-5540 or visit www.urbanharvest.org. Airline Farmer’s Market is the antithesis of the small farmer’s markets. It’s a giant, open-air, permanent installation at 2520 Airline Drive where you can buy the same produce that’s delivered daily to local grocers and restaurants. Cash-only; take plenty of small bills. There are also barrels full of whole spices, braids of garlic, herbal remedies, potted plants, taco trucks in the back, and a mercado full of Mexican crafts and souvenirs. In recent years, the Farmer’s Market has spawned a street full of foodrelated retail along Airline including Mexican bakeries (panaderias), cheese and spice shops and kitchen supply outlets. Garden Oaks/Oak Forest Farmer’s Market, 980 Wakefield Drive, is tiny and off the beaten
path. It appears magically each Saturday morning with a handful of vendors setting up in the parking lot of Petrol Station, with whatever produce is fresh, and eggs laid just hours before that are available with locally produced items in a cooked-on-thespot breakfast taco. A recommendation of our Leader Eater food connoisseur.
