If you need it, you can likely find it here Welcome to another year of The Guide. Welcome to the 38th edition of The Guide. That’s right. In 1975, the owners of The Leader decided this community needed something that pulled together all of the most useful information about the Heights, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest and the neighborhoods of North Houston, compiling it into one edition called The Guide. The purpose of this publication way back when was to help the new folks find their way to local businesses, restaurants and recreation. It also served as a reminder to the people who had long settled in this area about all the wonderful places Jonathan McElvy and people we have here. To say things haven’t changed much in these 38 years would be quite the understatement. The reality is we live in a digital world where almost anything can be found with the click of the mouse or the entry of a few keywords. That doesn’t make a publication like The Guide irrelevant, though. In fact, I believe it’s just the opposite. You see, when you open your computer or smart phone to find a business or an activity, that’s a “lean-forward” sort of approach. You want to find a steak house, so you search for steak house. “Lean-forward” searching is a good thing, and it’s made our lives a little more simple. But there’s another way to find information, and it’s something I like to call “lean-back” searching. “Lean-back” happens when you open a publication like The Guide. If you literally lean back in your chair and flip through these pages, you may find something you never would have searched for on your tablet or smart phone or computer. Maybe you’ll notice a business that you had no idea was only a mile away. Maybe you’ll find a youth sports league or patio bar that allows dogs. We tend to lean forward so often these days, and we don’t take enough time to just sit back and read. And that’s what we hope you’ll do as you thumb through the pages of The Guide. To the right, you’ll find a listing of every business in this community that chose to support a project like this. “Shop Local” has become a clichéd catch-phrase. In this case, we hope you’ll support the people who support our community

Neighborhood groups: Government at the grass roots There’s nothing more grassroots than civic clubs and homeowners associations. They’re a chance for neighbors to connect and discuss standards and safety and to deal with problems before they get out of hand. They can bring together families who have a common cause or problem and achieve results through the involvement of the many rather than the few. Civic clubs in Houston, which has no zoning regulations, take on additional responsibility. Residents rely on civic clubs to preserve the character of their neighborhoods through the enforcement of deed restrictions. But as civic officers know, a neighborhood’s deed restrictions are only as strong as the membership’s interest. Houston Independent School District encompasses 301 square miles within greater Houston and serves an enrollment of more than 203,000 students at 279 campuses.
