From the Publisher
If you need it, you can likely find it here Welcome to another year of The Guide. Welcome to the 38th edition of The Guide. That’s right. In 1975, the owners of The Leader decided this community needed something that pulled together all of the most useful information about the Heights, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest and the neighborhoods of North Houston, compiling it into one edition called The Guide. The purpose of this publication way back when was to help the new folks find their way to local businesses, restaurants and recreation. It also served as a reminder to the people who had long settled in this area about all the wonderful places Jonathan McElvy and people we have here. To say things haven’t changed much in these 38 years would be quite the understatement. The reality is we live in a digital world where almost anything can be found with the click of the mouse or the entry of a few keywords. That doesn’t make a publication like The Guide irrelevant, though. In fact, I believe it’s just the opposite. You see, when you open your computer or smart phone to find a business or an activity, that’s a “lean-forward” sort of approach. You want to find a steak house, so you search for steak house. “Lean-forward” searching is a good thing, and it’s made our lives a little more simple. But there’s another way to find information, and it’s something I like to call “lean-back” searching. “Lean-back” happens when you open a publication like The Guide. If you literally lean back in your chair and flip through these pages, you may find something you never would have searched for on your tablet or smart phone or computer. Maybe you’ll notice a business that you had no idea was only a mile away. Maybe you’ll find a youth sports league or patio bar that allows dogs. We tend to lean forward so often these days, and we don’t take enough time to just sit back and read. And that’s what we hope you’ll do as you thumb through the pages of The Guide. To the right, you’ll find a listing of every business in this community that chose to support a project like this. “Shop Local” has become a clichéd catch-phrase. In this case, we hope you’ll support the people who support our community

About our cover Editor Design Design Writer Writer
Tim Herschbach is a professional photographer from the Heights who usually points his lens toward faraway landscapes. For this year’s edition of The Guide, we asked him to create a landscape portrait in his own backyard, so to speak – something depicting what makes Leader neighborhoods so desirable – that oasis-in-the-big-city feel. He took this shot at sunset on the Heights bike trail, which leads its riders toward the sleek skyline of downtown, and safely back again.

Neighborhood groups: Government at the grass roots There’s nothing more grassroots than civic clubs and homeowners associations. They’re a chance for neighbors to connect and discuss standards and safety and to deal with problems before they get out of hand. They can bring together families who have a common cause or problem and achieve results through the involvement of the many rather than the few. Civic clubs in Houston, which has no zoning regulations, take on additional responsibility. Residents rely on civic clubs to preserve the character of their neighborhoods through the enforcement of deed restrictions. But as civic officers know, a neighborhood’s deed restrictions are only as strong as the membership’s interest. Over the years, civic clubs have worked with police to organize neighborhood crime watch programs, and some neighborhoods band together to fund extra law enforcement patrols by private companies or the Harris County constables’ offices. To help you become more involved in vital civic affairs or programs that could enhance the quality of life in your neighborhood, The Leader provides the following directory of area civic clubs and representatives to contact for assistance. • Candlelight Oaks Village Maintenance Funding: SCS Management Company, Debbie Spaw, 281-463-1777. • Candlelight Plaza Civic Club: Susan Fitzpatrick, 713-957-3519. • Candlelight Woods-Estates Homeown-

Their Community Engagement and Collaborations are a good indicator of who they are and the seriousness they attach to their name. www.futurehouston.com. • Houston Tomorrow - A leader in creating a community conversation, this organization, formerly the Gulf Coast Institute, has as its goal for Houston’s 200th birthday in 2036 for it to be “home to the healthiest, happiest, most prosperous people in the United States.” Specifically, they address issues of safe, walkable neighborhoods, transporta-

• Urban Houston Framework - http://www. urbanhoustonframework.com, is a project of the city of Houston and H-GAC to gather public input into what residents would like their city to be like. There are educational materials on the site, occasional interactive surveys, and the promise that movers-and-shakers are wired in to the project to actually ponder what you have to say.

That’s the story of Buddy Charity, who opened Maine-ly Sandwiches -- 3310 South Shepherd and 10745 North Freeway. He wanted his fellow Houstonians to enjoy those delicious lobster and crab rolls and one-of-a-kind clam chowder that he knew and loved. Houstonians have flocked to the two locations where they can also get grilled chicken, BLT and other sandwiches. In the mood for dessert? They have some of the best Whoopie Pies this side of the Mississippi. But dining in isn’t your only option with Maine-ly Sandwiches. They’ll cater your event -- from party trays to lunch boxes -- with a flair of New England seafood that will make your birthday party, office meeting or family reunion the envy of all of your neighbors and friends.
