nyone who works in the newspaper business will you the local community is its best asset. I can’t help but feel it’s this very reason why the 40th edition of The Guide continues to celebrate what this community has to offer residents and business owners alike. This year, we decided to do something a little bit different as far the organization of the Guide. Rather than simply having an A and B section we split the paper into the two modes we felt make up the everyday experiences of all of our residents here – Work and Play. This new format not only looks a bit cleaner, but we also feel it makes it a bit easier for readers to flip to exactly the kind of information they need. In our Work section, you’ll find plenty of resources regarding everything from home building, to local schools, to child care, along with a guide to many of our local civic clubs and the wonderful Super Neighborhood committees that have worked tirelessly to identify the

priorities and issues in the Heights area and surrounding communities. You’ll also find some wonderful write-ups submitted by local churches along with a short healthcare directory, anchored by the newly named Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. For those who own businesses, you’ll also find our listing of networking resources and the always popular Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce. For those looking to plan out a date or a special night with family members, you’ll find everything you need in our Play section.

Looking for a taste of something different? Check our list of reader-submitted ideas for underrated restaurants and bars right here in our community. Want to put a new spin for that night out with a special someone? You can also find some great ideas for date nights here in Northwest Houston that are sure to leave both people happy - not to mention full. For young ones, we not only have our early learning and childcare section in Work, but in Play you can also find info on youth sports in our area. Whether it’s football, soccer, or any other sport, you’re bound to find something fun. As 2016 passes by, we hope you’ll keep this Guide with you as a reference for any burning questions you might have, whether they’re serious or fun. The best part is that this Guide, like our paper, is for the community, by the community. It doesn’t get much better than that. Email Jonathan at jgarris@ theleadernews.com

Meet your neighbors at civic clubs, homeowners associations Those living in The Leader communities take great pride in their neighborhoods – something reflected in the various civic groups and community groups across the area. Whether you’re new to the area, looking to get involved, or just have a question, The Guide has you covered. Over the years, civic clubs across Northwest Houston have worked with police to help deter crime, preserve the character of their neighborhoods with the help of deed restrictions and have connected residents with each other at various functions and events. The following is a list of area community groups, civic clubs (and their respective presidents or community liaisons where applicable), local and state officials and where more information can be found.

Uniting neighborhoods, businesses through the local power of Super Neighborhoods In a city as big as Houston, organizing local residents can be a daunting task. Fortunately, our area Super Neighborhoods are here to help. A Super Neighborhood is a geographically designated area where residents, civic organizations, businesses and other entities work to identify the needs and priorities within their communities. Each Super Neighborhood elects a council made up of area residents to help organize discussions around issues and work with city and county officials to help improve their neighborhoods. The Leader area is served by four distinct Super Neighborhood groups: The Central Northwest Super Neighborhood Council (Super Neighborhood 12) President: Mark Klein

patient has an excruciating pain in his mouth. He thinks he knows exactly where it comes from. He naturally expects the dentist to treat the bad tooth and send him on his way. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple. Finding the source of the pain can be more of a problem than you would think. Because there are so many nerves in and around the mouth, the pain impulse may get jumbled on the way to the brain. Often, the discomfort seems to come from an area some distance from its real source. This phenomenon is known as referred pain. Pain from a bad tooth can seem to arise in front of or behind it, or even from the opposing jaw! Rather than rush in and treat the suspected cause of the pain, your dentist will probably perform a few tests to be sure. Be patient, as pain can be fickle. Your dentist wants you to be free of all pain; however, they also want to be sure that the problem they treat is the proper source of your discomfort. Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. From the office of: Chase Baker, D.D.S., 3515 Ella Blvd., 713-682-4406.

Vineyard Church of Houston The changing multicultural landscape of Houston, and our desire to be faithful witnesses, is opening our eyes more and more to a key message of Jesus Christ: reconciliation. Reconciliation between races, cultures, generations, and economic levels is needed now as much as any time in history. This has deep implications for the church and our lives. At Vineyard Church of Houston, we are being intentional and purposeful in responding to that message, growing into a church that reflects the diversity of our urban center and communicates the message: God values everyone. ‘Waste Not’ - Recycling and trash How do I get rid of Tree Waste & Junk Waste? Residents can get rid of their Tree Waste, which is collected during odd numbered months, and Junk Waste, collected during even numbered months, at their curbside. According to the Solid Waste Management Department website, “Tree Waste” is defined as clean wood waste including tree branches, limbs and stumps. Note that lumber, furniture and treated wood is not accepted and junk waste may not be placed for collection during these months – which is January, March, May, July, September and November. Junk Waste is defined as items like furniture, appliances and other bulky items. Residents can also place up to four tires at the curb for collection during these months. Junk Waste months include February, April, June, August, October and December. Waste should be placed adjacent to the front curb between
6 p.m. the Friday before and 7 a.m. on the collection day. The services are also not available to multi-residential structures of more than eight units, according to the SWMD website.
What sort of options do I have for recycling? Curbside recycling is currently available to 40,000 homes and an Automated Recycling Program for 211,000 homes. As part of the Curbside program, residents can place newspapers, magazines, telephone books, tin cans and other items in the same 18-gallon bin, collected on a bi-weekly basis. For the Automated program, residents can place unsorted recyclables in a 96-gallon green automated cart with wheels attached. A complete list of recycling service area maps can found online at www. houstontx.gov/solidwaste/recycling.html. Yard trimmings collection is also offered to citizens who receive the Automated Recycling Program. Grass clippings
and leaves must be placed in city-approved compostable bags not weighing more than 50 pounds.
How do I get rid of old electronics?
Houston currently offers CompuCycle, a permanent electronic recycling site in the Spring Branch area. The facility, located at 7700 Kempwood, is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Kempwood site can also accept common household recyclables. Among some of the items accepted include PCs, servers, keyboards, mice, laptops, game consoles, monitors, small kitchen appliances, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, projectors, car batteries and cell phones. The facility can be contacted by phone at 713-869-6700.
Where else can I take recyclables? The SWMD offers six locations: • North 9003 N Main 77022

How can I remember important dates for waste collection?
The city of Houston recently launched its own smartphone app to help residents stay on top of trash collection. The “Rollout” app is available for both Android and iOS smartphones (available through iTunes and Google Play) and offers information and reminders about the various Solid Waste schedules for trash, junk waste tree waste collection and recycling.
