Near north area of Houston home for plenty of good deals standards, a shopper is sure to find a must-have.

Bring your credit a card and take home a treasure.

By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader Resale, consignment, thrift, or vintage, this form of shopping goes by many names, but one factor remains constant - its popularity. With new stores opening everyday, the industry experienced 7 percent growth last year alone.

There are currently more than 25,000 resale, consignment and not-for-profit shops in the US, with industry experts estimating revenues of $17 billion annually.

There are many reasons for this. Today, “upcycling” old items is practiced in the interest of saving our planet from ever-growing landfills.

However, the foremost reason is money. Even the most well-heeled have discovered the thrill of stalking savings on treasures. It is common to find a Mercedes or BMW in the parking lot of any of our local resale shops as a result.

For those who have discovered this form of “hunting,” there is no comparison. The bliss of finding nearly new, high-end name-brands at a small percentage of the original cost, is intoxicating. And those of us living in near north Houston are in living in thrifting heaven. The Leader decided to do a resale store round-up to help insure no one misses out.

While there are housewares, Value Village specializes in clothing. It is organized, always interesting, and perhaps the best choice for hunting really big treasure for small change.

There is no brand-name pricing here. Nearly new Danskos sit next to Keds at the same price.

A skirt from Anne Taylor is priced the same as one from Target. A $20 bill can result in valuable additions to a wardrobe, just make sure you have time to mine for the gold. Like “Value Village Texas” on Facebook, and stay on top of their remarkable sales too.

Houston Junior Forum Resale Shop 1815 Rutland St. Open until 2:30 PM This resale shop is owned by the nonprofit agency, Houston Junior Forum, and has been offering well priced, used merchandise since 1969. About 10 percent of the shop’s annual profits go directly to the forum’s college scholarship and community grants programs.

This small but well-maintained store is probably the Neiman Marcus of resale in the Heights.

It is not uncommon to find high-end clothing, fine art or stunning antiques here, but at a fraction of what they would cost elsewhere.

The HJF Resale Shop also accepts nice, clean consignments with 60 percent of the sale paid to the consignor. As a result of these high

The store is owned by a local family that works with and donates to charities which contribute to the ever-changing inventory. Serving the Heights since the mid-1980s, Sand Dollar is located in an 80-year-old department store, and offers 18,000 square feet of treasure hunting.

While it is not particularly well-organized, the humble pricing and vast array of inventory can produce some real trophies. Just be sure to budget time for the adventure.

While this store is a newcomer to the Heights thrifting scene, it is already a favorite. The large, accessible location offers a well-lit, well-organized shopping experience at truly reasonable prices. Largely stocked with clothing and shoes, we have also seen furniture, appliances, housewares, and a dizzying array of lamps here.

And if there is anyway to make bagging big savings feel even better, it’s helping our fellow citizens at the same time. All the proceeds from this Goodwill location go to the services of the Continued • Page 24

It is large, bright and fun any day of the week.

While there is clothing in the inventory, our favorite part of shopping here includes everything else. Looking for an old beach cruiser bicycle? A new set of matching china or a western saddle?

And the money you are spending at this particular location goes to supporting the rehabilitation of our troubled neighbors. The agency’s remarkable programs have helped thousands facing addiction find their way back to happy, productive lives.

Salvation Army Auction 1015 Hemphill St.

If you are one of the those who don’t know about this, you should. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Monday through Saturday, folks-in-the-know bid on all manner of household items and electronics at a fast-moving auction supporting the Salvation Army’s rehabilitation programs. Brand new, king-sized mattresses are piled high. Used flat-screen TVs, and front loading washers and dyers are on deck. A broad array of items can be found here, day in and day out.

“At our auction, people can purchase a whole house full of furniture at ridiculously low prices,” said Charles Sapp, Director of Development for the Salvation Army ARC Program. It is true. The only downside to this thrilling shopping experience is hauling your purchase away.

Buyers have only until 2:30 p.m. before the crew starts loading the warehouse for the next day.

The Purple Cat Resale, Thrift & Consignment Shop, now celebrating its first anniversary, is a little different from the others on our list. First, it is in two buildings sharing one parking lot.

Both structures are chocked full of the unexpected – antiques, housewares, clothing, art and furniture. Perusing this store’s volume of inventory not only requires time, but it is so extensive, it may actually burn calories. (That’s a good thing.)

Another of this store’s standout features is that 100 percent of the profit generated goes directly to animal rescue in the area. All the cashiers are volunteer and owner, Julia Kathryn Long, does not take a salary from the venture.

For those seeking quality gifts, unusual home decor, outdoor items, or the thrill of the hunt, (often at the best prices in Houston), a stop at Alabama Furniture is a must. This 30- year-old business is owned and operated by a local couple who have turned resale into an art. As one approaches the building, you will notice an array of entertaining yard items, fun furniture and sundries that foreshadows the intrigue within.

Looking for a zebra-fur chaise lounge? A red leather sectional with fluffy black pillows? A hanging egg chair? A lamp shaped like an elephant tusk or an actual set of armor? Even estate jewelry can be found here. Be warned: not only is the inventory memorable, but the low prices will haunt thrift hunters who fail to take advantage of them.

Manna Thrift Store 1806 W. 43rd St. Open until 5 pm.

This wonderful store is clean, well maintained and well organized. The prices on the varied inventory of clothing, housewares, furniture, toys, and more are extremely reasonable. If a shopper is lucky enough to catch a sale, the pricing dips into the “hard to believe” range. While it is small, Manna Thrift Store has proven itself a great choice for bagging big savings on treasures any day of the week.

Notably, this thrift store is a true community effort. The donations come from people in the local area. The staff is all volunteer and the proceeds go to the Manna agency on 34th St., a nonprofit dedicated to providing assistance to local families who are in urgent need of a helping hand. Manna is a beautiful example of a community saving the planet through recycling, while helping each other at the same time.

You can’t get more quiet than a cemetery. And this one, described

by Houston Historical Tours’ Keith Rosen as the “River Oaks of the dead” has been around since 1871.

In days of yore, people used to bring picnics to cemeteries to eat before or after their Sunday stroll. And while you may not want to eat, Glenwood is lovely place to walk, learn and reflect. Buried there is a who’s who of Houston - William P. Hobby, Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas, and Mary Edna Gearing, the first female full professor and department chair at UT, to name a few. The ethereal beauty Gene Tierney is here too, along with Howard Hughes. In death, as in life, Hughes is keeping his privacy – the family plot is fenced off.

The Live Oak Quaker Meeting House, 1318 West 26th Avenue, behind Lowe’s

Part of Houston’s charm is the juxtaposition of the ordinary and the extraordinary. A prime example of this in The Leader area is the Live Glenwood Cemetery (photo by Betsy Denson) Oak Friends Meeting House, built in 2001. Renowned artist James Turrell and architect Leslie Elkins created a building that is beautifully spare for The Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, who meet there each week. The focal point of the building is Turrell’s Skyspace, in which the open air is the ceiling courtesy of a 12-foot-long aperture.

While visitors used to be able to visit the Skyspace every Friday in good weather, now they welcome visitors to Meeting for Worship on Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. - 9:20 a.m.

Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, 4501 Woodway Dr. Hours: Monday-Sunday, 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Just because something has been around for a while, doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate it anew. This 155-acre urban green space is yours to explore. Walk the inner loop trails to see ponds with lily pads and turtles or one of the eight other trails, including the Charlotte Couch Birding Platform which is a 20 minute hike from the main building and overlooks Buffalo Bayou. Great for bird watching and lowering your blood pressure. The Arboretum also offers nature inspired Food & Wine classes for adults as well as night excursions to see owls, among other nocturnal residents.

Waste, collected during even numbered months, at their curbside. According to the Solid Waste Management Department website, “Tree Waste” is defined as clean wood waste including tree branches, limbs and stumps. Note that lumber, furniture and treated wood is not accepted and junk waste may not be placed for collection during these months – which is January, March, May, July, September and November.

Junk Waste is defined as items like furniture, appliances and other bulky items. Residents can also place up to four tires at the curb for collection during these months. Junk Waste months include February, April, June, August, October and December.

Waste should be placed adjacent to the front curb between 6 p.m. the Friday before and 7 a.m. on the collection day. The services are also not available to multi-residential structures of more than eight units, according to the SWMD website.

What sort of options do I have for recycling?

Curbside recycling is currently available to 40,000 homes and an Automated Recycling Program for 211,000 homes. As part of the Curbside program, residents can place newspapers, magazines, telephone books, tin cans and other items in the same 18-gallon bin, collected on a bi-weekly basis. For the Automated program, residents can place unsorted recyclables in a 96-gallon green automated cart with wheels attached. Yard trimmings collection is also offered to citizens who receive the Automated Recycling Program.

Grass clippings and leaves must be placed in city-approved compostable bags not weighing more than 50 pounds.

How do I get rid of old electronics?

Houston currently offers CompuCycle, a permanent electronic recycling site in the Spring Branch area. The facility, located at 7700 Kempwood, is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Kempwood site can also accept common household recyclables.

Among some of the items accepted include PCs, servers, keyboards, mice, laptops, game consoles, monitors, small kitchen appliances, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, projectors, car batteries and cell phones. The facility can be contacted by phone at 713-869-6700.

RECYCLING

Where else can I take recyclables?

The City of Houston has added more glass recycling drop off locations in recent weeks. Through a new partnership with Strategic Materials Inc., North America’s largest glass recycler, the City is trying to provide citizens with more options to recycle glass. Some glass recycling drop off boxes have been located at: • Salvation Army Donation Center, 2208 Washington Ave., accessible 24 hours • T.C. Jester Park, 4201 T C Jester Blvd., accessible during park hours These locations take glass beverage containers and jars. These locations have glass bins ONLY; they do not take other recyclables such as paper, plastic, etc.

One can still drop off glass and other recyclables at City Neighborhood Depositories.

The Beer Can House, Rice Military, 222 Malone St. Hours: Wednesday-Sunday, noon-5 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Most people just drink beer but John Malkovich, a retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad, turned his consumption into something much bigger. In the 1960s, Malkovich began to adorn his yard with marbles, rocks, and metal pieces. Not satisfied, he turned to the house itself and began to add aluminum (beer cans from “Whatever’s on special”) siding as well as other decorative items made from the cans. Ripley’s Believe It or Not estimates that over 50,000 cans are part of the house. Plan to spend 45 minutes there but if you just want to drive your guests by too, it’s definitely something to see.
