projects on the horizon promise new chapters in the neighborhood’s artistic narrative. Collaborations with local schools, community organizations, and international artists are anticipated, reinforcing Houston Heights’ commitment to being a dynamic canvas for creativity.

By Lisa Morales The Leader News Contributor While the visual allure of Houston Heights murals is undeniable, these artistic wonders also serve as depictions of history, folklore, and celebrations of diversity and inclusivity. The influx of visitors drawn by the allure of these artworks has bolstered local businesses, transforming the area into a cultural and economic hub. Cafés, galleries, and shops have become integral parts of the mural experience, creating a symbiotic relationship between art and commerce. UT Physicians has expanded its plastic and reconstructive surgery services to the Greater Heights area, aiming to improve accessibility for patients who may find traveling to the Texas Medical Center (TMC) inconvenient. The new location, situated at 1631 N. Loop West, Suite 560, serves as a second facility for the clinic. Dr. Klara Sputova, a plastic surgeon with UT Physicians, mentioned the initiative as an effort to make healthcare more convenient for patients who may feel uncomfortable navigating the large TMC area. The Greater Heights location is expected to provide specialized care, particularly for breast cancer patients, enhancing the existing comprehensive services. Dr. Sputova, hired in September 2023, is the first fellowship-trained female surgeon at UTHealth Houston, specializing in breast reconstruction. She divides her time between the new location and the Texas Medical Center, offering general plastic and cosmetic surgery, with a focus on breast augmentation. The clinic operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For appointments or inquiries, individuals can contact the clinic’s main line at 832-3257181.

Motorists beware! Fraudulent websites disguised as ParkHouston parking meter app From Community Reports The City of Houston has discovered fraudulent websites appearing at the top of Google search results for “ParkHouston app” and “Parkmobile app.” These fake websites claim to be the City’s paid parking application and require customer credit card information but will not allow a parking transaction. ParkHouston encourages motorists to avoid becoming a victim of this scam and download the ParkHouston or Parkmobile app via the Google Play and Apple App Stores only.

“Last week, the City of Austin reported this same scam involving websites appearing at the top of Google search results for its payment app. At least three customers in Austin reported paying money to a fake website,” said ParkHouston Deputy Director Maria Irshad. “While ParkHouston has not received any calls from customers in Houston, we want motorists to be aware and pay close attention to anything claiming to be an official parking app, otherwise you could lose your money and your vehicle might get towed or ticketed if you pay a fake site.”

ParkMobile is aware of the issue and has reported it to Google. However, the ads remain active. The ParkHouston app and the Parkmobile app are the only apps authorized by the City of Houston for parking meter payments. Steps to ensure users are downloading the correct app: • Do not search for the apps in the Google search bar • Search for ParkHouston or ParkMobile apps in the Apple App Store or Google Play only • Download the app and make all payments through the app

If you accidentally make a payment to a fraudulent website, notify your credit card company to dispute the charges. If this happens and you receive a parking citation, see the reverse side of the citation on how to contest the parking citation. You have 30 days to contest online or in person. You can also email parking@houstontx.gov for assistance. ParkHouston manages the limited on-street parking spaces to support public safety, quality of life, economic development, and sustainability in Houston.

UPDATE: Teen arrested, charged in connection with drug-related shootout that left 15-year-old dead By Stefanie Thomas editor@theleadernews.com

New Well Puppy & Kitten Exam

Houston Police have arrested a 17-year-old Waltrip High School student in connection with the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy that occurred in the 4200 block of Sherwood Ln. around 2 a.m. Dec. 1. Jaydon Williams is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 337th State District Court. The dead teen was identified as Joseph Barrios. Court records state that Williams and Barrios drove to the Park at Malaga apartment

complex with the alleged intent of robbing a 15-year-old marijuana dealer. Williams reportedly knew the dealer from in school suspension and set up a meeting to buy marijuana. According to the probable cause statement, however, Williams and Barrios had no intention to buy the marijuana but planned on stealing it instead. Williams reportedly met the dealer and his 17-year-old companion in the parking lot and began chatting when Barrios allegedly stepped out from behind a vehicle holding, and racking, a gun. According to court records, a shootout ensued between

Barrios and the dealer's 17-yearold companion, who was also carrying a gun. Numerous shots were reportedly fired.

Court documents state that Barrios was struck several times and subsequently died from his injuries. The dealer's companion also sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to the hospital by private vehicle. As of this writing, no charges have been filed in connection with Barrio's death against the teen, who police believe acted in self defense. NETWORKING from P. 1 is through the vast number of functions available for members to attend. On a regular basis the Chamber hosts two breakfast networking meetings, a luncheon for all members and visitors, a luncheon for women professionals, two happy hour networking gatherings, and a multitude of committee meetings centered around three large scale events the Chamber sponsors annually. When asked how the Chamber differs from other networking groups in the area, Montalbano states, “Besides greater accessibility to attend and participate, we keep our membership dues at a low rate to be affordable for as many of our area’s business professionals as possible. We provide educational programming; we offer many possibilities for our Members to be spotlighted and we foster community outreach opportunities. All this along with not being afraid to have some fun as well!” The Chamber takes pride in its ability to let its members play a pivotal role in shaping the overall Chamber experience, seeing themselves as facilitators, providing platforms for Members to be heard and providing various outlets for members to share their thoughts. This community centered approach has led to many members developing almost their entire business from Chamber participation. One very recent example of the benefits of Chamber networking is a printing company who made a beneficial connection with the Boy Scouts of America organization after many cold attempts had failed. The printing company now earns a sizable amount of business from this connection. For those wanting to attend a Chamber function, Montalbano has an event you don’t want to miss. “We are presenting our Economic Forecast Luncheon on January 24th with Dr. Ray Perryman as our Keynote Speaker. Dr. Perryman is one of our nation’s most respected economists and his insights can greatly assist those in attendance to better prepare their businesses for what lies ahead in 2024. Knowledge is power!” Contacts and socials for the Chamber are as follows: email president@heightschamber.org or call 713-861-6735 - Ext. 100; visit heightschamber. org, follow facebook.com/GreaterHeightsArea ChamberofCommerce, instagram.com/heightschamber, linkedin.com/company/heightschamber-of-commerce.

Network In Action - Garden Oaks/ Oak Forest: A Unique Networking Experience Jennifer Johnson is a true believer in the power of connection and champions that passion for business owners in the Garden Oaks/ Oak Forest community with Network In Action (NIA). As the founder/owner of several NIA locations, Johnson sees networking in a “big picture” forum where building strong, positive, reciprocal relationships can change lives. In Johnson’s own words, “I love networking and connecting people. I feel that it’s my true calling and what I was put on this earth to do. Nothing, and I mean nothing is more satisfying than making a connection that changes the trajectory of someone’s business which in turn changes the trajectory of their life. And we are changing lives! The relationships that are formed here are putting children through college, securing retirement, creating more prosperous futures, and supporting local communities. If you think about it, we’re all one connection away from something great happening. It’s a true honor and privilege to help facilitate those connections.” NIA meetings go beyond handshakes and passing out business cards. Every month there’s a different interactive agenda that’s a cross between a mastermind session, sales strategy forum and relationship building best practices. NIA’s number one goal and biggest priority is creating a fast track for people to get to know one another so they can build relationships and help each other’s businesses grow. One thing Johnson believes sets NIA apart from other networking groups is NIA’s guaranteed ROI on membership. This means that if a member doesn’t meet specific revenue outcomes from referrals inside the group, they get their second year of membership free. This is exclusive to NIA and provides a fail-safe net for their membership investment. NIA meetings are only once a month which, in Johnson’s opinion, saves time and protects valuable billable hours. An additional monthly online speed networking event gives members another opportunity to engage and build relationships. What has the response been to NIA? Johnson states, “Feedback has been amazing!” Business owners regularly comment, “Wow! This is different from anything I’ve ever experienced. I’ve made some amazing connections, and it was so fun.” Other testimonials for Johnson’s NIA state, “This is exactly what I was looking for when I was searching professional networking groups. If you

are looking to connect with other like-minded professionals and grow your circle of influence, connect with Jennifer.” and, “I’ve been involved with several networking groups in Houston. Houston Association of Realtors: Despite declining sales, the Houston housing market ends 2023 on solid footing

Data provided by Houston Association of Realtors

From Community Reports Mortgage rates drove many consumers to rent, but inventory and pricing have created a positive buying landscape for 2024 For the second year in a row, economic forces affecting the entire country caused its share of disruption to the Houston housing market. While 2023 saw significant growth in housing inventory and moderation in pricing, it was ultimately mortgage interest rates, which leapt to 20-year highs, that prompted many would-be buyers to scrap purchasing plans or pivot to rental housing in 2023. As 2024 gets underway, Houston’s residential housing landscape is considered to be on solid footing if you factor out the uncertainty of what the Federal Reserve may do with interest rates and lingering consumer jitters over inflation. A decline in single-family home sales and total property sales made 2023 the second consecutive negative year for Houston housing. According to HAR’s December/Full-Year

2023 Housing Market Update, single-family home sales fell 12.0 percent to 83,854. Sales of all property types totaled 102,367, down 13.1 percent from 2022. Total dollar volume dropped 12.6 percent to $40 billion versus $45.6 billion in 2022. “It is disappointing to have a down year for home sales, but the economic forces affecting Houston affected housing markets across the U.S., so this was not a uniquely Houston situation,” said HAR Chair Thomas Mouton with Century 21 Exclusive. “We believe that home sales will pick up once consumer confidence is restored, and that depends on what the Federal Reserve does with interest rates and evidence that inflation is no longer a threat. The expanded housing inventory and moderation in pricing we saw throughout 2023 have created a positive buying landscape for 2024.” For December, single-family home sales fell 6.2 percent year-over-year. That comes on the heels of November’s

City moving forward with traffic plan for 11th By Adam Zuvanich azuvanich@theleadernews.com

Protected bicycle lanes are coming to 11th Street in the Heights, where drivers will have fewer lanes to maneuver along one of the neighborhood's most popular thoroughfares. That is by design, according to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who announced Tuesday that the City of Houston will move forward with its long-debated plan to transform traffic on 11th Street in the interest of safety and to make the road more multimodal. Bike lanes will be added on

both sides of 11th between North Shepherd Drive and Michaux Street, where there will be one vehicular lane in each direction with a center, left-turn lane along the stretch between Yale and Studewood streets. The plan also calls for bike lanes along Michaux between 11th and Stude Park to the south as well as protected crossings for pedestrians and cyclists at intersections such as 11th and Nicholson Street, where the Heights Hike-and-Bike Trail crosses 11th, and Michaux and White Oak Drive. There now are two vehicle lanes in each direction on 11th

between Shepherd and Michaux, and no center turn lanes. "With four lanes for cars, the street encourages fast driving," Turner said in a 4-minute, 30-second video released by his office. "That speed results in 10 percent more crashes than the average road across the state of Texas. Those crashes are at nearly every intersection between Michaux and Shepherd. Bullet train project in limbo with CEO’s resignation By Adam Zuvanich azuvanich@theleadernews.com

The yearslong effort to construct a high-speed railway between Houston and Dallas appears to have stalled, at least for the time being. Carlos Aguilar announced last weekend in a LinkedIn post that he had resigned as CEO of Texas Central, the Dallas-based company behind the quest to connect the state’s two largest cities with a bullet train. His departure comes as the Texas Supreme Court considers a case that will determine whether the company has the legal authority to exercise eminent domain - likely a critical factor in its ability to acquire the land needed for the proposed railway - and amid questions about the project’s financial viability. Carlos Aguilar “While I could not align our current stakeholders on a common vision for a path forward, I wish the project the Photo by Mark Lear greatest success and remain convinced An eastern screech owl named Owlouette loves on Beaker, one of her offspring, in the backyard of Oak Forest resident Mark Lear. of the importance of this venture for the safety and prosperity of all Texans,” Aguilar wrote. “... Carter comes home as new principal at Hamilton By Adam Zuvanich azuvanich@theleadernews.com

Erika Carter has never lived in the Heights, but she’s long considered Hamilton Middle School to be home. It’s where she started her teaching career more than two decades ago and spent the first 13 years of her tenure with Houston ISD. First Carter served as an English Language Arts teacher at Hamilton, then as the department chair, a grade-level team leader, a teacher specialist, a Title I coordinator, an assis-

tant principal and a summer school principal. She still kept tabs on the Heights campus after leaving to fulfill other roles at other HISD schools and, when she learned about an opening in the principal’s office, Carter said she jumped at the chance. She started this week as the new principal at Hamilton, 139 E. 20th St. “It’s very much a full-circle moment,” Carter said. “It’s always been a bit of a secret dream of mine to be able to be the principal at Hamilton. Having done so many of the

Erika Carter

positions there and learned so much and the community poured into me as a first-year

teacher, I always wanted to give back to it.” Carter succeeds Robert Michaels-Johnson, who she referenced as having retired. Michaels-Johnson declined an interview request made through the HISD Press Office, which did not answer emailed questions about the length of his tenure, his accomplishments or the nature of his departure before press time Wednesday. Hamilton received recognition last fall from Texas nonprofit Children at Risk, which ranked the Heights campus as

4.7 percent sales increase that marked the first upward sales move in 19 months. Most segments of the housing market experienced declines, however the heaviest volume segment – consisting of homes between $250,000 and $500,000 – was unchanged compared to December 2022. Homes priced from $1M and above declined 2.1 percent. The median price of a single-family home – the figure at which half of the homes sold for more and half sold for less – was $330,000 in December, unchanged from a year earlier. The average price of $407,817 was also statistically flat.

HISD announces the creation of Cullen Military Academy From Community Reports The Houston Independent School District (HISD) today announced that it will open Cullen Military Academy at Cullen Middle School in the 2024-2025 school year. The academy will support students aspiring to serve in the United States military after high school graduation. They will receive high-quality instruction and develop skills to become civic-minded, disciplined leaders committed to excellence and service. HISD is establishing Cullen Military Academy after conversations with the nation’s Service Academies, including the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy. Cullen will be a leadership incubator for Houston youth, empowering them through character mentoring, rigorous academics, and community service. (CUT IF NEEDED) “HISD is known for having a range of educational options, including specialty

schools designed to set students on a path to college and careers in fields that interest them,” said HISD Superintendent Mike Miles. “Our new Cullen Military Academy will add to that list, expanding options for young people who want to pursue a career of service and the many opportunities that are available as part of that path.” With a motto of “Courage to Lead, Heart to Serve,” Cullen Military Academy will prepare students as strong future candidates for admission into elite military academies. Students will wear uniforms and, after middle school, will be able to seamlessly transition into the District’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs; college, career, and military readiness programs; and career and technical education programs at the high school level. Cullen Middle School is a part of HISD’s New Education System (NES) and follows the high-quality

academic program that is in place in all NES schools. In addition, Cullen Military Academy will offer specialized courses in leadership and character development, Chinese (Mandarin), and career and college exploration. All electives will incorporate physical activity, leadership training, and collaboration. The academy will be the only school of its kind in HISD. Students can apply through the district wide School Choice application process, which opens January 18. Applicants must commit to a two-year term and adhere to the school’s mission, vision, and the HISD Code of Student Conduct. Physical fitness standards are flexible and inclusive to accommodate varying abilities, ensuring a fair opportunity for success. The academy will accept 100 to 120 students per grade in sixth and seventh grades for the 2024-2025 school year and will grow to include eighth graders the following academic year.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is proposing improvements along Interstate (I)-10 from Voss Road to I-45 (Downtown), otherwise known as the Inner Katy Corridor, in Harris County, Texas. This notice advises the public that the project team will be conducting an online virtual public meeting on the proposed project with an in-person open house. The virtual meeting will be available starting on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, at 5 p.m. The virtual public meeting will consist of a pre-recorded video presentation and will include both audio and visual components. To view the virtual public meeting presentation and view project information visit: www.txdot.gov/projects/hearings-meetings.html. Please note that the presentation will not be available on the website until the time and date listed above. If you do not have internet access, you may call (713) 802-5199 between the hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to ask questions and access project materials during the project development process. Formal comments may be provided by mail or email as explained below. Additionally, TxDOT is providing an in-person open house option for individuals who would like to participate in person, instead of online. In-person attendees will be able to view the same pre-recorded presentation as posted online, review hard copies of project materials, ask questions, and submit written comments. The in-person open house will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the TxDOT Houston District Office, 7600 Washington Avenue, Houston, Texas 77007. The proposed project would include approximately 6.3 miles of new managed lanes, reconstructing the existing general-purpose lanes, and expanding the current drainage system. I-10 between the project limits consists of five 12-foot-wide general-purpose lanes in each direction, 8 to 10 foot-wide shoulders, a discontinuous frontage road system varying between 2 to 3 12-foot-wide lanes, and 6-foot-wide sidewalks. The existing right-of-way is approximately 415-feet-wide.

Any environmental documentation or studies, maps and drawings showing the project location and design, tentative construction schedules, and other information regarding the proposed project are on file and available for review Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the TxDOT Houston District Office, 7600 Washington Avenue, Houston, Texas 77007. Project materials are also available online at www.txdot.gov/projects/hearings-meetings.html. The public meeting will be conducted in English and Spanish. If you need an interpreter or document translator because English or Spanish is not your primary language or you have difficulty communicating effectively in English or Spanish, one will be provided to you free-of-charge. If you have a disability and need assistance, special arrangements can be made to accommodate most needs. If you need interpretation or translation services or you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend and participate in the public meeting, please contact Gabriel Adame, NEPA Public Engagement Coordinator, at (713) 802-5199 or Gabriel. Adame@txdot.gov, no later than 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 2, 2024. Please be aware that advance notice is required as some services and accommodations may require time for the project team to arrange. Written comments from the public regarding the proposed project are requested and may be submitted in any language by mail to the TxDOT Houston District Office, Advanced Project Development Director, P.O. Box 1386, Houston, Texas 772511386. Written comments may also be submitted by email to HOU-PIOwebmail@ txdot.gov. All comments must be received or postmarked by Monday, Feb. 26, 2024. Responses to comments received will be available online at the web address listed above once completed. If you have any general questions or concerns regarding the proposed project or the public meeting, please contact Stephanie Guillot, P.E., Project Manager, at (832) 627-9795 or by email at

TxDOT is currently considering two alternatives to add four managed lanes which will be presented at this public meeting to compare to the no-build scenario. The two alternatives are: 1) Elevated Managed Lanes where the proposed managed lanes would be on an elevated structure with minimal right-of-way (ROW) needed (approximately 0.34 acres) and no residential or business displacements and 2) Non-elevated Managed Lanes where the proposed managed lanes would be located at the same grade as the general purpose lanes, expanding the ROW needed (approximately 12.54 additional acres), with displacements of approximately 52 residential structures and 30 businesses/commercial structures.

SGUILL-C@txdot.gov.

The proposed project would, subject to final design considerations, require additional right-of-way (ROW) and potentially displace 52 residential structures and 30 business/commercial structures. Relocation assistance is available for displaced persons and businesses. Information about the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Act and services and benefits for those displaced and other affected property owners, as well as information about the tentative schedule for ROW acquisition, may be obtained from Angela Leach-Jayroe, Right-of-Way Project Delivery Manager, by calling (713) 802-5753

Mandarin: 如對出席和参与会议有特殊要求或需要口譯或筆譯 請撥打 (713) 802-5199.

The proposed project would involve an action in a floodplain.

The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried-out by TxDOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated December 9, 2019, and executed by FHWA and TxDOT. Please call (713) 802-5199 to request special accommodations or if you have need for interpretation/translation.

THE TOPICS. Lend me your years “Elvis Is Dead and I Don’t Feel So Good Myself ” -- A book by Lewis Grizzard. So how are you feeling today? If you are a Texan over the age of 78.5 years you are on borrowed time. That’s the average limit for such folks, but don’t worry, I have suggestions for you to beat the grim reaper, including where to live, what ethnicity to prefer, what sex, and even how to vote. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as reported by Texas Public Radio (my vast research staff works 24/7), Texans die sooner than most of our countrymen (and countrywomen). Compared to Texas’ 78.5 years, life expectancy in the U.S. on average is 79.74 years as of 2023. The national death age continues to get younger -- it’s the shortest it’s been in nearly two decades. The U.S. ranks 36th in the world for life expectancy at birth. This is younger than the average life expectancy for high-income countries, which is 82.7 years. But which U.S. state one lives in is also a predictor of life expectancy? Except for the fires that rage through the islands, Hawaii has the highest life expectancy in

Lynn Ashby Columnist

the U.S. at 80.7 years. And Mississippi has the lowest life expectancy in the U.S., at 71.9 years. But, even here in the Lone Star State, how long you live depends on your race and your sex. For example, women in Texas have a life expectancy of 81.2 years, while men have a life expectancy of 75.8 years. That is quite a difference. Like almost six years. If you are of the Caucasian persuasion don’t bother to buy any green bananas, as the expression goes. Hispanics in Texas (I prefer the title of Tejanos, it’s unique to us) have a life expectancy of 81.2 years, while whites have a life expectancy of only 78.1 years, and people who are Black have a life expectancy of 75.3 years. Even our politics enter into how long we live. Generally speaking, life expectancy is longer in states that have consistently been

run by Democrats. Uh-oh. That does not look good for Texans, whose politics and power are totally dominated by the GOP. In states which enact liberal policies like health care, mental health services and anti-poverty programs, its citizens live longer. In states where Republicans are consistently voted into office, the life expectancy is the shortest in the nation. The reasons are pretty obvious. These Republican-run states have higher COVID rates, more drug abuse deaths, lack of access to health care, higher gun violence, and more complications from treatable diseases like diabetes. As a result of how we vote, Texans are not living as long as we used to, and the decline in life expectancy happened over just one year. The Lone Star State is among the states where life expectancy dropped at least two years, according to new reporting from the CDC. Citing other sources (no, this is not plagiarism; I’m not the ex-president of Harvard) as you may have guessed, the COVID-19 pandemic accounts for much of the increase in deaths in the nation. In 2020, there were

over 1 million deaths in the U.S. from COVID-19-related issues. In Texas, there were 88,373 COVID-19-related deaths between 2020 and 2022, Texas Department of Health and Human Services reported. Outside of COVID-19, CDC says the leading cause of death in Texas is heart disease, followed by cancer. COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death. The CDC’s National Vital Statistics Reports shows every U.S. state, and Washington, D.C. saw a drop in their life expectancy rates from 2019 to 2020. Though all were impacted, New York is the only state that saw a 3-year decrease in life expectancy, with the average 2020 life span around 77.7 years. The next highest decreases happened in the District of Columbia, Louisiana, New Jersey, Arizona and Texas — life expectancy in these states all dropped by at least two years since 2019. As we can see, the unusual blip in all these statistic is COVID-19, which messes up everything. That pandemic accounted for the greatest spike in deaths in the U.S. in 100 years. As recorded in 2020 by U.S. Census, be-

tween 2019 and 2020, deaths in the U.S. increased by 19 percent, which is huge. This brings us back to Texas. Experts say Texans can improve our life expectancy by addressing social and economic issues with several approaches that include spending more on public health, education, and social programs. But that would take a total overhaul of our state government. Indeed, our state leaders, Gov. Greg Abbott in particular, have done all they can to prevent us from taking the simple step of using masks. As of last September, COVID mandates by all Texas governments – state, county, city and I suppose school districts -- were banned from requiring masks, vaccines, and lockdowns. But worry not, because Texans’ life expectancy can be improved. You can move to Hawaii. If you are white or Black, change your ethnicity to Tejano. Men, undergo a sex-change operation. I‘m not sure where transgenders fit in. Stay away from alcohol, tobacco and wild sex parties. (Actually, you are already dead but don’t know it.) Do not walk into a cantina on a Saturday night and

yell, “Draw!” Avoid bikers disputes. Do not pat a pit bull that is foaming at the mouth. Avoid all state employees. So when a highway patrol car signals for you to pull over, speed up. Watch those drugs. The CDC reports that in the year ending in August 2022, over 107,000 people died overusing fentanyl. This is equivalent to a plane with nearly 300 people aboard crashing every day. This reminds me, don’t sit next to a door on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737. Do not drive on the West Loop unless you are in an M1 Abrams tank. It’s OK to wear your MAGA cap to a Klan rally, but never wear an Elvis costume anywhere. Listening to icicles hit the metal housing of my A/C units was not on my bingo card this year. What a challenging week for some. The worst I experienced was the complete obliteration of garlic in all forms except dry/powder at the grocery. Was there a vampire convention in town? This week’s slow start had me looking at calls for art and there are some fun ones out there. Being an artist sometimes is just a matter of choice, regardless, you’ll want to see the results of these calls for art so read on. Arts District Houston, in partnership with Fresh Arts, has a fun way to kick-off 2024 by hosting a Vision Board Workshop led by artist and yoga instructor Nicole Peralta. The workshop will take place Thursday, January 25 at Love Dance HTX, 2206 Edwards

guidance provided by Nicole Peralta. The session will conclude with a 75-minute segment dedicated to the creation of individual vision boards. This is an all-levels course with accessible and adaptable techniques for everyone, seating is limited however, register early. The fee is $15. Supplies included for the class: glue, scissors, poster board, magazines, pencils, pens, stickers and tape. You may bring your favorite art supplies ie., scissors, stickers, photos, pens, paper, magazine images, glue, brushes, etc. Sign up on the Fresh Arts website: https://fresharts. org/event/vision-boardworkshop-2024/ Many calls for art come my way, I cannot recall one that is cooler that Arts District Houston’s call for creating their 10 Year Anniversary art car.

Arts District Houston will utilize the art car as a “mobile welcome center” after the parade, as a way to promote and bring more awareness to the arts and cultural opportunities in the First and Sixth Ward neighborhoods. Deadline for submissions is Friday, January 26, 2024 by 11:59 p.m. Submit your proposal here: https://fresharts. submittable.com/submit Find other opportunities on the Fresh Arts artist opportunity board, https://fresharts.org/ artist-opportunity-board-2/ An artist call a little further out in both submission deadline and location is the Ardest Gallery call for “Upcycled” An Ardest Gallery Art Show. “UPCYCLED” is a Juried art show to be held at Ardest Gallery in The Woodlands, Texas, just North of Houston between April 11th - May 4th,

St., from 6-8 p.m., Houston, TX 77007. The session kicks off with a grounding meditation and intention setting with Drea the Artist. Then, participants will learn various ways to make a vision board, involving the integration of words, images and sketches in one place. The class will focus on the creative process, encompassing a 20-minute meditation session with singing bowls featuring Drea, followed by 20 minutes of writing prompts and

The Arts District is seeking artists/painters to submit work samples for the opportunity to create a unique design or artwork for an art car. The vehicle is a 1991 Chevy Suburban and will be entered under the category “Painted Car” for the Art Car Parade on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Three finalists will be invited to submit design-specific proposals for consideration. Designs should honor the 10 Year Anniversary of the Arts District by highlighting the artistic, cultural and historical importance of the Arts District. The selected artist will receive $8,000 to cover the work, participation, and materials for creating and implementing the design on the art car. The two runner-up(s) will each receive a $200 proposal fee for their time.

MOVIE REVIEW

The greatest movie you’ve (n)ever seen: Brigsby Bear By Elliott Stewart Youth Movie Critic Rating: ★★★★★★/★★★★★

It was a Saturday night. My parents were both out and my brother was staying at my grandparents house. I was home alone and bored out of my mind. I turned on the T.V and started a movie I’d never heard about before. It was called Brigsby Bear. It looked like a fun and simple movie that I could watch while playing video games, but as the movie went on, I was hooked. This wasn’t just any movie. This was the greatest movies I had ever watched! If you don’t know (chances are, you probably don’t) Brigsby Bear came out in 2018 and is the baby of SNL actor, Kyle Mooney, known for his skits, and director Dave McCary, who got his start on YouTube and climbed up the Hollywood

ladder until he got to this film. Brigsby Bear was also written by “The Good Neighbor Writing Group” who write mainly for SNL. So almost everyone who made this movie had never actually worked on a feature film before, and for a first try, this is spectacular! Ok, so this paragraph is going to get into heavy spoilers for Brigsby Bear, so if you haven’t seen the movie, do not read any further! Seriously, you want to see this movie, trust me! Please stop reading now! Now that everyone is gone, let’s dive into the film’s story. We follow James as he lives underground with his family in a post-apocalyptic world. James is obsessed with a show called Brigsby Bear. It seems to be the only thing he ever talks or cares about. His parents can’t seem to match his level of enthusiasm about the show and try to encourage him to move on and

mature. After James has a talk with his dad about his Brigsby situation, the cops show up. At this point I was really confused as to what could be going on, why was it post-apocalyptic? Why is James watching Brigsby on VHS? But as the movie went further, things began to click, in their own weird way. The rest of the movie gets a bit convoluted, so for simplicity’s sake I’m going to hit the major plot points. After the cops show up James gets separated from his parents and is brought into a new family, and a new non-post-apocalyptic world. James isn’t used to all the change, and just wants to watch the next episode of Brigsby Bear. Nobody knows what Brigsby Bear is, which means it was canceled without an ending, consequently James sets out to complete the story with his very own Brigsby Bear movie!!!

I love this movie. I think that it’s the greatest movie to come out in 2018. Even though almost everyone who worked on the movie had little to no previous experiences making feature films, it doesn’t feel that way. It never drags on, every scene has a purpose, and manages to be emotional and funny at the same time, which is hard to pull off. Even though there are some flaws, I’d like to think that Brigsby Bear is the perfect movie! Elliott Stewart is a Heightsbased youth movie critic who hopes to direct movies himself when he grows up. In the meantime, he watches, analyzes, and critiques movie classics as well as current cinema releases. Elliot’s parents occasionally allow him to watch and critique R-rated films under their supervision.
