For the first time since before the coronavirus pandemic began, residents, business owners and curious visitors donned white linen this weekend and ventured down 19th Street to celebrate White Linen Night – a newish Heights tradition that traces its roots to New Orleans. But while the crowds were back, this iteration of White Linen Night lacked something of the history magic, according to those who attended. “Major disappointment,” one person wrote on the event’s social media page. “No bands were present, nor tent vendors. Had to be very cautious crossing the streets since they weren’t. blocked off this year… Just not the same vibe as years past. Will not go back.”Another wrote that while the event was still fun, it wasn’t quite as exciting without the streets closed and that the sidewalks got packed with people because no one could safely walk in the street.White Linen Night is typically held the first weekend in August and was founded in 2006 as part of an effort to draw more visitors and patrons to small and independently-owned businesses in the neighborhood.

When businesses began shutting down and people went into isolation at the start of the coronavirus pandemic locally in March 2020, Amy Rollo worried about the future of her mental health business, Heights Family Counseling. “I don’t know exactly how much of our practice we lost, but it felt like overnight we had this huge hit,” she said. “And I thought to myself, ‘are we going to make it?’” Like so many other industries, the employees at Heights Family Counseling, 2500 Summer St. Suite 1220, planned for an uncertain future. But just a few short months later, the phones began ringing more and more frequently, RolloAndsaid. they haven’t stopped ringing since. Mental health professionals across the region and country have spoken out about an unprecedented demand for their service since the start of the pandemic.Morethan 40 percent of respondents reported feeling depressed or anxious during the height of the pandemic, compared to about 11 percent before it began, according to one report from the Association of American Medical Colleges. That comes in a country where experts project the shortage of psychiatrists could be between 14,280 and 31,109 in just a few years, according to the report. Local mental health professionals say the situation in the area hasn’t gotten that dire, but they have noticed a significant uptick in demand for appointments.“It’stothe point where I’ve seen the biggest influx of patients of my whole career,” said Barbie Atkinson, the founder and a practitioner at Catalyst Counseling, 810 W 21st St. Both Atkinson and Rollo, along with a host of other mental health professionals, say the isolation and other pandemic-related issues combined with mental health problems that existed before to cause an avalanche of new demand for“Peoplecounseling.were used to doing a lot of things to cope,” Atkinson said. “Maybe it was travel or something else. But when those distractions and coping mechanisms were taken from us, people had nowhere for that to go.” Joey Sorenson, a therapist o ering teletherapy in the area, agreed. “I and many of my colleagues have noticed a big Local residents could soon start seeing small fixes or improvements to parts of Houston’s bikeways in the area as the result of a new budget initiative recently approved by Houston’s Bicycle Advisory Committee.During a July meeting, the Bicycle Advisory Committee approved a motion that would set aside 10 percent of the annual Houston bike plan budget for incremental improvements to existing bikeways and connectors. A report from Axios said the committee is given $1.1 million each year to help construct nearly 1,800 miles of trails and connectors as part of the Houston Bike Plan that Houston’s city council approved in 2017.According to a PowerPoint presentation during a July 27 meeting, the funds set aside as part of the 10 percent would be held separate from the plan’s “priority” projects. Those funds would instead be used for spot safety improvements along existing bikeways. This year’s projects will include several in the Heights area, according to BikeHouston, a local advocacy group.Among them will be improving the transition from Micheaux to the White Oak Bayou trail in Stude Park, and there are also plans to install either a tra c signal, four-way stop, or raised intersection at Heights Boulevard and the MKT Trail near 7th Street. Also planned for this year is installing a stop sign and a high-visibility crossing where the MKT Trail crosses North Shepherd Drive. As strategic opportunities are identified, the project concept will be presented to the BAC committee for guidance and confirmation. If BAC supports, that will be sta ’s direction to implement. The committee could then take action to fundOnceit. that year’s funds are spent, additional proposals will be held until the following fiscal year. An email request for comment from Bike Houston Executive Director Joe Cutrufo was unreturned as of Wednesday afternoon.

Thessalonians 5:3-10 says, “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together withWhathim.” does this passage teach us? There is a lot here to learn from but the big idea is clear. Children of God should not be afraid because God is in control. God has given us work to do as we live by faith and show the love of Christ to those around us. Each day may bring new challenges, but God is in charge of it all. You may not understand what He is doing, but you can trust His character and know that if you are in Christ, you will ive together with Him someday!

networks telling us about ourselves, as if they knew. They are all inside-the-beltway pundits who lunch together, read one another’s columns and vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, probably in a gated Pundits Place. They wouldn’t know what the average American thinks if one bit them on the rump. Wait. Here comes David Gergen, adviser to four presidents. Gergen is always introduced that way. It probably says on his business card: “David Gergen –adviser to four presidents.” (He served during the administrations of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. He is currently an analyst for CNN and a professor at the Harvard Kennedy School). I hope those four presidents took his advice because Gergen stands out as thoughtful, experienced and with wise solutions. He speaks; “What America needs (here we go again) is our own Volodymyr Zelinsky.” Now he’s hit it. To refresh your memory, Zelinsky is the embattled president of Ukraine. Before that exalted position, he was a standup comedian and then played a high school teacher on TV who became – one guess – president of Ukraine. Don’t laugh (or do, after all he’s a comedian). In the not so distant past Americans have elected entertainers such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump. Zelinsky was elected president on 31 March, 2019, with a run-off on 21 April, scoring a record 73.22 percent of the popular vote against the incumbent, Petro Poroshenko. The president’s annual salary is $13,000, which is probably why Zelinsky can only afford green T-shirts. In contrast, his arch enemy, Vladimir Putin, officially earns $187,000 annually so he can afford $400-million yachts. I would say Zelinsky should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but that may be difficult for someone who holds forth nightly on Ukrainian TV reporting how many Russian troops were killed that day. America does need good leaders – again. In the past we have had some excellent people in leadership positions and at just the right time. Like in 1776. We had Washington, Jefferson and, of course, Edward Rutledge. We tend to think of them as old, white, rich guys, but the average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was just 44. More than a dozen of them were 35 or younger. The forgotten Edward Rutledge, a lawyer from South Carolina, was only 26 at the time. Benjamin Franklin skewers this by being 70 years old. Several of them lost their fortune during the Revolutionary War. A few didn’t fare so well as businessmen. Samuel Adams from Massachusetts was an unsuccessful brewer, who would be surprised at the success of a beer named after him. They came from a wannabe nation with a population of 2.5 million, or about the same as the city –just the city -- of Houston. Since the days of the Founding Fathers, our leaders have ranged from excellent (Lincoln and the Roosevelts) to mediocre/awful (Hoover, Nixon and an ex-president to be named later). Others we have seen in leadership positions include Spiro Agnew, Jimmy Carter, Dan Quayle and Pamela Harris. Our nation’s current population is 334 million, although I haven’t checked with ICE lately, but we seem to be lacking in quality leaders. (By “leaders” I don’t mean demagogues and their cults.) President Joe Biden inherited several major problems – the list is too long –and doesn’t seem to be able to handle them. No Mount Rushmore for him. Americans have elected to Congress Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene who just tweeted praise for the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s call to defund the police was, shall we say, ridiculous? Stupid? Mindboggling? Our Congressional leaders are boxed in, so polarized they couldn’t agree on the day of the week. Mitch McConnell will go down as perhaps the worst Senate minority leader in history. Across the Rotunda, Nancy Pelosi has to deal with MitchNowMcConnell.wecome to Texas. In 1836 Texas’ population was estimated at 38,470. Add the estimated 14,200 Indians, that gave the republic over 52,000, not enough people to fill NRG Stadium. In that small number, we had Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar. Since then we have had other brave men and women who created what we have today. We need another LBJ and Sam Rayburn. When Johnson ran the Senate and Rayburn controlled the House, the Lone Star State pretty well got what we wanted. NASA and the Johnson Space Center spring to mind along with military bases, dams and highways. Back then we picked real leaders. There are now 29.9 million Texans. How does the Greg Abbott Tollway sound? The Dan Patrick International Airport? We have Louie Gohmert, who asked, in a Congressional hearing: Is there anything that government agencies can do “to change the course of the moon’s orbit, or the Earth’s orbit around the sun?” His latest effort, which he denies, was obtaining a parting – or pardoning – gift from Trump just in case Gohmert broke one or more laws trying to overthrow the 2020 Presidential election. The state’s lawyer, Atty. Gen. Ken Paxton, who has been evading the law for seven years, is being investigated for bribery by the FBI and faces disbarment for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot. Our ag commissioner, Sid Miller, flew to Oklahoma for a “Jesus shot,” an injection that its maker claims can cure all pain for life, and tried to bill us taxpayers for the trip. There are few bright lights like Liz Cheney. Nomadic Sen. Mitt Romney shows occasional guts. After four years of fawning obedience, Mike Pence came through when it counted. Where are you, John McCain, now that we need you? I guess “Volodymyr Zelensky” is hard to get on a bumper sticker, much less on a ballot. Ashby votes at Ashby2@ comcast.net to

I also believe that about every community in a given slice of any state or region –and the recently-held White Linen Night in the Heights is the perfect representation of truly celebrating what makes you unique. The event needs no introduction, so I won’t waste much column space on it. What warrants this space, is what the event represents. It was back in person for the first time since 2019 on Saturday, and was a fun night once again. You’ll see a story on today’s front page about its Thereturn.Heights is not just a random neighborhood. It is about the historic districts. It is about mom-and-pop and independently owned businesses whose overwhelming purpose is not profitability but to provide a service to their community – and in turn, those one-time customers become loyal ones drawn in by the warmth and hospitalityTheshown.neighborhood is about camaraderie with each other as well as those in communities of Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, and the area’s numerous unique communities who take pride in such individuality.AndWhite Linen Night perfectly represents that spirit of this slice of north Houston, with an event so uniquely Heights that it’s hard to more strongly associate the neighborhood with anything else. The event began in 2006, and has gradually grown in popularity over the course of nearly two decades, with more than 50,000 attendees during the last in-person event in 2019. People know what’s going on the first Saturday in August when they see security guards, portable restrooms and barricades on 19th Street between Ashland and Yale streets. Each year, attendees walking down 19th Street are introduced – or reintroduced – to the various shops that inhabit it. Which fits, seeing as the underlying reason White Linen Night began in the Heights was to invite Houstonians to visit its many small businesses. It’s also a time where dozens of area artists typically congregate under white canopy tents and showcase their own talents for the community to see, though there were none out last weekend. And even though area restaurants and shops held themed events last year amidst cancellation of the official event, there’s something quite moving about seeing throngs of people gather to celebrate the uniqueness of this slice of Houston. And the spirit remains the same, even though the streets were not closed off like before with this year’s Celebratingevent.our individuality, while simultaneously coming together as one body, is a universal theme that transcends any person or community. It’s the type of gathering that has been at a premium for much of the last two years. But the party was back last weekend. So let’s celebrate what makes us unique. Because while it seems to be a walking contradiction, celebrating our differences in fact brings us all even closer together as one community for a common purpose – no matter where we are.

Mark Ackley knows that going to a typical hospital for something like an outpatient procedure is stressful enough in and of itself. Then add in the wait times and potentially needing to stay overnight, and it can become an even more strenuous process than it already is. At Complete Surgery Houston Northwest, however, he said they aim to take the added strain away while getting patients taken care of with the highest quality of care and getting them home the same day. Ackley is the CEO of Texas Regional Clinic, which operates the center at 1900 North Loop West, Suite 600 in the Central Northwest area off the Interstate 610 Loop. Complete Surgery offers general surgery, orthopedic surgeries, pain management, plastic surgeries, and neurosurgery.“Inthepast few years, we have started to identify certain types of surgeries that can be done outside of a hospital setting,” Ackley said. “It’s a cleaner environment, it’s a nicer environment, it’s in your neighborhood and you don’t have to go to a big Completehospital.”Surgery Houston Northwest has a 16,000-squarefoot facility with four operating rooms and two procedure rooms. Ackley said the center offers a safe, reliable, and comparable alternative to the typical hospital setting, and that the patient-friendly design of the center ensures optimum flow and maximum privacy from check-in to pre-op and the operationSurgeriesitself. typically begin at 7 a.m., he said, and go until the final one is finished. But at the end of the day, they are able to discharge patient and let them go home instead of having to stay overnight in a hospital setting.“The idea is for you to come here, have the surgery, and then go home,” EverythingAckleyabout the center, Ackley said, is designed for maximum efficiency to help his staff efficiently and quickly treat patients. And in turn, he said that type of setting only increases the quality of care – which is ultimately their end game.He said Complete Surgery Houston Northwest is committed to providing patients with the best quality of surgical care with convenience, cooperation, efficiency, and cost effectiveness in a comfortable and pleasant outpatient environment.Fromits bigger-than-normal procedure rooms and state-ofthe-art careinit’sledinequipment,technology/operatingtoexpeditedcheckandadedicatednursingstaffbyLoreeLongoria,hesaidallaboutgettingthepatientandoutwithhigh-qualityfromstarttofinish.Theeffortsevenextendto
Show your appreciation by supporting local farmers markets

By Shana Tatum Although it is sweltering hot here in Houston, our farmers and ranchers are doing the hard work to bring food to our tables.
Supportscommunitieshealthy We know social connection is integral to good health. People that shop at farmers markets have 15-20 social interactions per visit. These connections are not only usually pleasant but educational. Most farmers and ranchers are very happy to share with you how to enjoy their products, encouraging your return visits and improved nutrition. One report remarked that proximity to farmers markets was correlated with lower body mass index. Some tips for your next trip: Learn how the foods are grown, talk to the farmers. Many farmers will give you ideas for serving and preparing their food. Ask how they grow their produce; how do they care for their animals. Most are thrilled to share with you what they work so hard at day after day. If you are seeking certain food items, arrive before the crowds. If you’re looking for discounts and deals, however, go to the market later. Sometimes sellers offer produce for a reduced rate depending on what is remaining at the end of the Takeday.your water bottle, a hat and an open attitude to learn and try new flavors, textures, and smells. Engaging with your food at a local level is healthy for everyone.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics prepared a survey of 1500 farmers reported that over 70 percent said that they worked more than 60 hours a week. In addition to planting and harvesting crops, minding livestock, and getting products to market, most farmers also manage several administrative tasks as well as supervising employees, interns and apprentices. We are so lucky in the Houston area to have so many choices. Begin to make the rounds and find your favorites. Each market is usually a little different, some being more focused on artisan crafts, others more on prepared foods and some markets more traditionally provide produce, meats, and fish. Fresh local food provides nutrition you need Eating seasonally tunes the body and supports our natural physical cleansing and healing processes. When food is harvested at the peak of freshness, it provides the most nutrition. A wide variety of minerals, vitamins, phytonutrients, and antioxidants are ours for the taking. A gourmet cookie shop recently made its grand entrance to the Heights and north Houston neighborhoods last week. Pudgy’s Fine Cookies opened the doors on its first brick-and-mortar location, located in the Heights at 1010 N. Shepherd Dr., on July 31 according to a news release from theOwnercompany.and founder Van Teamer began baking specialty gourmet cookies in November 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the release, and has been selling cookies at Houston-area pop-up markets and events for a little over a year. It will have flavors like the original Pudgy – a chocolate chip cookie packed with Callebaut chocolate – and the bonanza brulee, a caramelized banana cookie with a crème brulee“Whatcenter.began as a family pandemic project has become so much more. Our goal was to create an amazing cookie made with high quality ingredients that made people smile,” Teamer said. “We’ve been blown away by how we’ve been received by Houston, and can’t wait to share even more Pudgy cookies with our city and beyond with our newPudgy’sspace.”Fine Cookies will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Heights’ Revival Market giving way to new project A popular Heights dining spot has closed its doors, but it’s staying in the family with a new future concept. On July 31, the Revival Market at 550 Heights Blvd. closed its doors. It had been open under owners Morgan Weber, Ryan Pera, and Vincent Hyunh since 2011, according to a statement posted on Facebook, and gave birth to what is now Agricole Hospitality. “We are immensely proud of what the Revival Market team has accomplished and are extremely grateful to have been a true part of this neighborhood and community,” the ownership group, which also runs Coltivare in the Heights, said in a joint statement. “To everyone who drank and dined with us over the years –it’s been an However, honor.”thespot is staying in the family, according to the ownership group. The group said Layne Cruz, who has been Revival’s general manager for the last five years, is taking over the space and plans to turn it into a new restaurant and“Weconcept.couldn’t imagine a better person to take the reins,” they said. New restaurant, taproom coming to Heights Aug. 20 Crust Pizza Co. announced earlier this week that the restaurant is opening a new dining spot and taproom along one of the Heights’ main corridors. On Aug. 20, Crust will host an all-day grand opening at 1919 N. Shepherd Dr. across from the Burger Joint to commemorate its opening, including giveaways and local vendors such as 11 Below Brewing Co., Amsterdam Coffee Co. and Eureka Heights.Onits menu will be 15 different types of pizzas, according to spokesperson Amber Treybig, as well as freshlymade salads, sandwiches, desserts and more. There will be 36 beers on tap, the restaurant said as well as cocktails to enjoy along with food on its patio that has 11 TVs.
On the off chance that you are not tired of me writing about BAM! Art Market, the event I am hosting this Saturday, Aug. 13, at Silver Street Studios Warehouse, 2000 Edwards St. from noon-8 p.m., I shall continue. In my July 30 column, “Cool on off with BAM!” I wrote about why I canceled the summer evening markets for this one big one. To recap, BAM! is the merging of First Saturday Arts Market and The Market at Sawyer Yards, both outdoor art markets, each a little bit different. First Saturday Arts Market in the Heights features primarily fine artists, many of whom have studios at Sawyer Yards where The Market at Sawyer Yards takes place on second Saturdays and focuses on artisan craft, folk art and food. Moving indoors in a very large space opens some opportunities for artists that normally would not partake in an outdoor market, and I am thrilled to give them the opportunity. Mixed media artist Laura Aurealis is one such artist that knows how to take advantage of tall spaces. In a section near the main entrance to the Silver Street Warehouse, Aurealis has created a “forest” for her origami cicadas. Aurealis’ colorful cicadas have adorned jewelry, walls and now towering painted canvas representing the trunk of trees, albeit in shades of purple. In a statement about her exhibit, Aurealis explains her intent with the 30-foot ceilings inside the air conditioned warehouse.“My art merges art and alchemy to create thoughtful, whimsical works of art layered with metaphor and meaning,” Aurealis said. “Inspired by nature, spirituality and metaphysics, my work explores themes of transformation and rebirth.”Aurealis’ process driven approach to art making is deeply influenced by her background in art education, theatre and set building. Taking simple materials, infusing them with intention and creating rituals around her process, Laura transcends the everyday and infuses the mundane with magic. Aurealis’ Origami Cicada installations have been featured in exhibitions and events for Young Audiences, Momentum Indoor Climbing Gym, Sofar Houston concert series and Understory HTX. Cicada Season, popping up at BAM, will be Aurealis’ first “off the wall” experience.“A Floating Forest of large scale abstract bark paintings, rolled into tree trunks, covered in origami cicadas and suspended from the ceiling will take viewers on a stroll through a mystical forest of transmutation.” Aurealis said. Heights artist and muralist Caroline Truong, formerly a regular at outdoor markets until the joys of Motherhood intervened, will be painting a small scale mural at the event. Her vibrant and popup style of painting is reminiscent of the flowery art from the 1960s summer of love.Truong will also offer growth charts featuring her own creation, Dream Bird. No doubt these fun charts, as colorful as her murals, were inspired by the new little feet in her own home. “Dream Bird is a character I created that represents a mindset I aspire to adopt,” Truong states in her bio. “The bird’s constant state of dreaming is depicted with closed eyes and painted in grayscale amidst vibrant backgrounds. I paint Dream Bird for anyone who is struggling with something as an inspiration for mindfulness, self care, and confidence.”“Mymission is to spread the happiness that painting brings to me, to everybody.” Truong stated. That’s a great message for BAM! too, we hope everyone has a good time and leaves inspired with new creations. The website lists the artists, makers, musicians and food vendors, and as a reminder, if you join us in the evening, where your dancing shoes, one of Houston’s premier Cuban bands, Charlie y La Tribu Cubana, performs 6 - 8 p.m. Cohen is an artist and founder of the First Saturday Arts Market and The Market at Sawyer Yards. Review: Rooster and Rice o ers big time flavor, comfort Being in the service industry, I have worked brunch. Brunch is a hard shift because it is very busy, and sometimes it’s hard for people to be nice in the morning. My wonderful coworker would have me stop what I was doing and have a little broth with him before starting my day. I can’t describe how, but this little ritual – albeit warm, salty, familiar and comforting – made my day a lot easier to manage. After eating at Rooster & Rice, I found my broth again. Rooster & Rice is in The Stomping Grounds off 34th and Ella, a new development with impressive new tenants. It is a concept from California that is looking for traction in Texas. True to the name, it is a chicken and rice-based restaurant that amps up Khao Mun Gai (poached chicken and jasmine rice) with fresh vegetables, spicy sauces and house-made pickles. They offer counter service only, and there is limited inside seating, so it was recommended by staff that the food be ordered to Igo.started with The Cutlet, which is a panko crusted chicken thigh served over fragrant jasmine rice, accompanied by sides of sweet chili, habanero sauce, and spicy pickled vegetables. I have been craving fried chicken this week, and this more than satisfied the craving without making me feel gauche. It is perfectly crisp, and the chicken is flavorful and juicy. The habanero sauce is a perfect accompaniment, as it is not too spicy, and has a creaminess that works very well with the crunchy chicken. At $13.95, this was a nice-sized and healthy meal, but did not make me feel like I had broken either my wallet, or my tummy.Idecided to try the salad to make sure I had some non-pickled veggies, and it was simple and surprisingly satisfying. Very fresh mixed greens, cucumber, diced broccoli stalks, carrots, cherry tomatoes and peanuts came with a dressing described as the “KMG Vinaigrette.” This was the highlight of the meal. It has a soy sauce/ginger-y base, with herbs to give the sauce bulk, and it is blended with oil, in the style of a vinaigrette. It was delicious, not to be missed. It really elevated the salad and highlighted the freshness of the vegetables while complimenting the overall combination of flavors. Back to the broth… the meal was served with a wellportioned side of chicken broth. Simple enough. It was an incredibly cloudy, salty, lovely broth with accents of green onion. It transported me back to the days when a good friend helped me find my relaxation food, and it helped me have a positive and productive day. I uncharacteristically passed on popcorn chicken, a breaded chicken sandwich, a shredded chicken congee with egg - basically a savory rice pudding - and they even have waffle fries. Just because I had a healthy meal doesn’t mean you should, particularly when the menu is $13.95 or under. Give Rooster & Rice a try. Have one of everything. Drink some broth. Have a great day. For those already prone to be more introverted or shy, it was a pretty substantial impediment to establishing a sense of meaning and purpose through connection and intimacy withTheothers.”pandemic isn’t the only thing causing an uptick in demands for counselings, said Jessica Eiseman, the founder and clinical director of Ajana Therapy, 1302 Waugh Drive Suite 538. “There’s also an uptick with everything going on politically as well,” she said. “Especially after the Roe v. Wade ruling, a lot of people have sexual trauma. And that’s beenAtkinsonretriggering.”says she shies away from keeping a waitlist, in part by referring potential clients to other therapists and colleagues in the profession.“I think there are enough people to meet the demand,” she said. “It’s just a matter of finding out where to go to get help. We can Google things, but there’s a magic in the word of mouth.” Not everyone has been so lucky,Thehowever.employees at Heights Family Counseling are back to a more manageable caseload of about 25 clients per month, but the practice has managed that because about 80 percent of sta keeps a waitlist, Rollo said. Some have a waitlist of about a year, she said. During the early months of the pandemic, demand reached a fever pitch, with some therapists seeing as many as 30 or more clients each week, Rollo explained. “I was also managing a practice, so I was working about 60 hours per week,” sheThatsaid.came despite the fact that Rollo doubled the sta size and expanded the o ce itself by leasing additional space in the building, she said.Eiseman said she believes there are enough mental health professionals in the area to serve everyone, but it becomes complicated because of insurance and other factors.“For instance, there’s a wide pool of associates out there working on their hours,” she said. “They’re licensed, but they can’t use peoples’ insurance. Though the streets were still lined with community members last Saturday, some store owners and attendees said the event was not quite the same as years past.
was held in-person in 2019, it drew more than 50,000 attendees. This year’s event, however, didn’t include barricades on 19th Street between Ashland and Yale streets as it has previously, according to event organizer Sara Jackson. And several attendees and businesses criticized how that changed the vibe of the event as a whole.Luis Rabo, who owns We Olive & Wine Bar, at 249 W 19th St., told the Leader that the return of the event was exciting and good, but that it didn’t quite reach the economic heights of previous years. “In one way, I’m very happy and grateful for all the support we got from it,” Rabo said. “But it wasn’t the full-on White Linen Night that everybody is used to, in terms of street closings and artists that are Expectationsthere.”for this year’s event were through the roof because of how long since the last one, and so it was nice for it to return, Rabo said. But there was less concentrated visitors to local businesses, he said. “I know there were more celebrations out there versus past White Linen Nights,” he said. “So, that might have had an

But out of his start as a one-man teaching school, Parks has now been able to bring that dream to fruition. Bojangles Music School announced last week that the school, which Parks runs along with his wife Liz, has opened its second brick and mortar school at 1529 Heights Blvd. Bojangles’ original brickand-mortar location on the second floor of Rockin’ Robin Guitars & Music at 3619 S. Shepherd Dr. in Montrose will remainHowever, open. Parks said the new store has a special meaning.“I lived in the neighborhood for 15 years, so in some ways, this feels like coming home for me,” he said. Parks first founded the school in 2007, traveling around as a one-man band teacher, going from his home on 10 ½ Street around Houston and giving lessons to beginning musicians. Eventually, he said that gave way to players such as Will Van Horn, Paul Beebe, John Egan, Matt Harlan, and others joining as teachers on various occasions. In 2014, Parks founded the first brick and mortar in Montrose. But he always wanted to bring a music school to the Heights eventually, he said, and that dream is now a reality.“Opening a music school in the Heights has been a goal of mine since the beginning of Bojangles,” he said. Bojangles Heights shares the new space with Julia & the Standards Studio, the rehearsal headquarters for the jazz group of the same name. At the Heights school, there will be instruction in rock-and-roll instruments including acoustic and electric guitar, piano, bass guitar, mandolin, ukulele, drums, dobro, lap steel, and more according to Parks. All individual lessons are one-onone, Parks said, and offered in both 30-minute and one-hour slots. The new space, Parks said, will also allow for advanced instruction. For the first time, Parks said Bojangles will also offer band lessons at its Heights school – an option previously unavailable due to spaceBojangleslimitations.Heights, he said, features large practice rooms with room for four- and fivepiece groups, ensuring students pursuing individual study at Bojangles Heights and Bojangles Rockin’ Robin can also take advantage of rock-and-roll band instruction at the Heights location. “We’re looking forward to building on what we’ve created at Bojangles Rockin’ Robin by joining another diverse community and helping new friends of all ages follow their musical dreams,” Parks said. A Houston Business Journal 40 Under 40 nod has previously recognized Parks as a top Houston entrepreneur in 2020, according to the school. However, that pales in comparison for Parks with regards to being able to keep sharing his love for music while helping young musicians in a community that he called home for so many years. He’s back where he belongs, in his mind, thanks to his new school.“Coming back to the Heights has been every bit as heart-warming as I thought it’d be…I’ve even had old neighbors call and reach out to ask about starting lessons, folks who remember me talking about launching this business well over a decade ago,” he said. “People of all ages are signing up, which is exactly what we want. This really is such a special community.”
A man has died after possibly suffering a medical episode that led to a single-car crash in the Central Northwest neighborhood last week, according to the Houston Police Department. The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Jose Sanchez, according to HPD. A second man who was in the car alongside Sanchez was not hurt, according to theSanchezdepartment.was driving his green Ford Ranger west at 5300 W. 34th St. just before 4 p.m. on July 30, police said, when the car veered off the road and eventually hit a telephone pole. He was later pronounced dead at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, according to HPD. The other man, who was sitting in the passenger seat, told police that Sanchez slumped over and fell unconscious immediately before the crash, which investigators believe means a medical episode may have led to the crash.
