They also do a lot of hair and makeup sessions for people who are going to galas, events, birthday parties, and especially for people who are getting pictures taken for head shots and family pictures. “Our most popular client lately outside of bridal has been high school seniors doing their Senior portraits,” Salinas said. “They are a fun group to work with.”

Experts: Greater Heights housing market showing no sign of slowing down Dr. Bill Gilmer, the guest speaker at the Greater Heights Chamber of Commerce luncheon, gave an hour-long speech about the symbiotic relationship between the Oil & Gas industry and the Greater Houston economy. Gilmer said the Houston economy is still growing but not at the same rate that it had been for the past year or so. What does that mean for the Heights, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks areas, specifically in terms of the real estate market? Scott Lester, president of Heights-based Allegiance Bank, said the strong housing market in the Greater Heights area will remain strong. He predicted at least 2-3 more years at the current level. Allegiance has played a key role in the growth as one of the largest financiers of residential and commercial growth in the area. The market definitely favors sellers with prices

For Oak Forest resident Leah Salinas, an art major and former stay at home mother, a career as a stylist was an evolving process. “As a young mom, I wanted to earn money from home so I started selling makeup and skin care through BeautiControl,” she said. “Those clients wanted help with makeup, so I took a few makeup classes and also got airbrush makeup training.” Then people started asking her if she would help with their hair for their wedding. “I took a few styling seminars for event styling in hair and makeup. It was so much fun I decided to dive into it full time in 2006,” said Salinas, who started My Beautiful Face. “I love that I can use my art training in a unique way and help people feel confident on an important day to them.” Salinas primarily did location work until 2012 when she opened a studio on W. 19th St. “We share space with Monique with Perspectives Photography,” she said. “Our clients can come into the studio to get hair, makeup, and portraits done in one spot.” Salinas also has relationships with other area photographers who

Oak Forest Business Association inaugural event The Oaks Business Association (OBA) will hold its first event from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Plonk, 1214 W. 43rd St. It is open to businesses in Oak Forest and Garden Oaks, as well as community members. The Association started as the result of a discussion by Oak Forest business owners who wanted to strengthen ties and network in the local business community. The idea of an Oak Forest Chamber of Commerce came up, but organizers decided a business association would be a better first step. Business owners also discussed the possibility of contracting with S.E.A.L.S., the private security firm that contracts with the Oak Forest Homeowners Association. David Lorms of the Oak Business Association said there isn’t enough support for a business contract with S.E.A.L.S. but it will be discussed in future OBA meetings. For more information, email Lorms at davidl2490@aolcom or Courtney Patel at courtpatel1@gmail.com
