Experts: Greater Heights housing market showing no sign of slowing down Dr. Bill Gilmer, the guest speaker at the Greater Heights Chamber of Commerce luncheon, gave an hour-long speech about the symbiotic relationship between the Oil & Gas industry and the Greater Houston economy. Gilmer said the Houston economy is still growing but not at the same rate that it had been for the past year or so. What does that mean for the Heights, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks areas, specifically in terms of the real estate market? Scott Lester, president of Heights-based Allegiance Bank, said the strong housing market in the Greater Heights area will remain strong. He predicted at least 2-3 more years at the current level. Allegiance has played a key role in the growth as one of the largest financiers of residential and commercial growth in the area. The market definitely favors sellers with prices

For Oak Forest resident Leah Salinas, an art major and former stay at home mother, a career as a stylist was an evolving process. “As a young mom, I wanted to earn money from home so I started selling makeup and skin care through BeautiControl,” she said. “Those clients wanted help with makeup, so I took a few makeup classes and also got airbrush makeup training.” Then people started asking her if she would help with their hair for their wedding. “I took a few styling seminars for event styling in hair and makeup. It was so much fun I decided to dive into it full time in 2006,” said Salinas, who started My Beautiful Face. “I love that I can use my art training in a unique way and help people feel confident on an important day to them.” Salinas primarily did location work until 2012 when she opened a studio on W. 19th St. “We share space with Monique with Perspectives Photography,” she said. “Our clients can come into the studio to get hair, makeup, and portraits done in one spot.” Salinas also has relationships with other area photographers who

Oak Forest Business Association inaugural event The Oaks Business Association (OBA) will hold its first event from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Plonk, 1214 W. 43rd St. It is open to businesses in Oak Forest and Garden Oaks, as well as community members. The Association started as the result of a discussion by Oak Forest business owners who wanted to strengthen ties and network in the local business community. The idea of an Oak Forest Chamber of Commerce came up, but organizers decided a business association would be a better first step. Business owners also discussed the possibility of contracting with S.E.A.L.S., the private security firm that contracts with the Oak Forest Homeowners Association. David Lorms of the Oak Business Association said there isn’t enough support for a business contract with S.E.A.L.S. but it will be discussed in future OBA meetings. For more information, email Lorms at davidl2490@aolcom or Courtney Patel at courtpatel1@gmail.com

Thanks...For All You Do At the Chamber’s January Breakfast Connection, moderator Kathryn van der Pol and a panel of business owners presented a compelling program detailing just how chilling, even with the best of intentions, government regulations can be to economic growth. The interaction, especially with the four City Council members in the audience, was frank and mutually valuable. An excellent report on the event can be found in the February edition of LINKED, our member magazine. This column, however is addressed to small business persons, and concerns two important points that the morning highlighted. It would have been difficult to leave that meeting without a heightened appreciation of the challenges faced by small business owners as well as a renewed sense of admiration for the critical role you play. It is absolutely no exaggeration to count you among the heroes of our community. You provide the products and services we need, create the majority of jobs, pay the lion’s share of taxes, and self-

successes and sharing the pain of their defeats. The road you have chosen is far from the easiest, and is fraught with sacrifice and risk for you and your family. And yet that morning the meeting room was packed with Chamber members who, despite all these challenges, are growing, starting new ventures and prospering. For that, our community owes you a debt of gratitude and respect, though it may generally go unexpressed. Which brings us to the second important point. As anyone at that breakfast can attest, there is one place where small business is understood, supported, and appreciated...among your fellow members here at the Greater Heights Area Chamber, where you will find hundreds of kindred spirits, local entrepreneurs sharing their concerns, experiences, and referrals. And in today’s environment, I think you’ll agree, that’s a valuable asset. Let me conclude by offering a sentiment that you deserve to hear more often, “Thanks for all you do!”.

Who is Taking Care of Whom?

Historically, dogs and cats have been our constant companions that we have cared for, but what have we gotten in return? Dogs obviously are great for security as police, military or guard dogs and even a tiny Chihuahua will sound the alarm that sends a burglar elsewhere. There are even search and rescue dogs, bomb and drug detectors and even cancer snifng dogs. Seeing eye and other disability assist dogs help many people to better lives. Cats and dogs help keep unwanted guests out of our homes. Snakes, skunks, rats, bats and other wildlife are kept at bay to protect us from Rabies, Leptospirosis and other dangers. More importantly pets offer constant companionship and greater overall health. Studies show that pets drop our blood pressure and stress hormones. They improve our immunity and chances of surviving heart attacks or other debilitating diseases. They inspire us to get off the couch for a brisk walk or healthy exercise and play. Pets make us more social and give us a purpose in life because they remind us how to care for and love others, no matter what.

Waste business is anything but for Oak Forest resident By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

Fourteen years ago, Sergio Rivera was a general manager of an audio/visual company, living in the Heights as he approached 30 years old. He didn’t know that a simple poker game would change his life. One of his poker buddies joked that Rivera should start a pet waste removal company. Rivera took his friend’s challenge and put an advertisement in a newspaper that resulted in a call three days later.

Now, Rivera, a 43-year-old Oak Forest resident, has been the owner of Scoop le Poop, an Oak Forest-based pet waste removal company, since 2000. “Everybody loves the name, and they say it backwards,” Rivera said. “It’s a cool name, it’s funny. It’s a clean, classy name.” Rivera has seven employees and is looking for three more. While 30 percent of his business is done in the Heights/ Oak Forest area, Rivera has expanded the company throughout Greater Houston. Scoop le Poop removes waste from dogs, cats, guinea

pigs and horses. They install waste stations at apartment complexes. “People think (waste removal) is a luxury,” Rivera said. “If you think about it, it’s a genuine necessity. We remove the waste and disinfect/deodorize the yard. Being ecofriendly is important. We put the waste in ecofriendly, plastic bags.” Rivera said pet waste removal is even more essential in a place like Houston where the heat exacerbates the bacteria of the waste. Rivera said there are a lot of misconceptions about pet waste that are out there.

“Dog waste is the third most dangerous pollutant after birds and humans,” Rivera said. “People think dog (waste) is fertilizer, and it’s absolutely not.” Rivera, who grew up in El Paso and moved to Houston in the late 1980s to attend the University of Houston, enjoys living in Oak Forest. “It’s basically a little city,” said Rivera, who is looking to add a new warehouse location in the Oak Forest area.

Next step: West Point

STH senior has always dreamed of attending USMA By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

When Christopher Zook Jr. was in the second grade, he knew that he wanted to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and serve in the U.S. Army. “It’s always something I’ve been called to do,” said Zook, an 18-year-old St. Thomas High senior. “They produce leaders. There’s a lot of character at the school.” Zook, who completed one of the most impressive and eclectic football careers at STH, will sign a national letter of intent to play football for West Point, a Division I independent program with a rich history. Zook was recruited by the U.S. Air Force Academy and most of the Ivy League schools, but chose West Point because he felt like he fit in the best there. “You’re not just a football player at West Point,” Zook said. “There’s an extremely heavy workload. I liked that a lot.” West Point applicants must receive an appointment by a U.S. Senator or Representative, and Zook received his from Rep. John Culberson, a Republican from Houston. After graduating from West Point, cadets are commissioned as officers in the U.S. Army, and they have an eight year service commitment. Zook plans on studying political science, with plans on working in politics someday. As an officer, he’d like to serve in the infantry. “It may be more dangerous, but that’s where I want to be,” Zook said. West Point went through a coaching change after Zook committed, with Jeff Monken replacing Rich Ellerson. That hasn’t changed anything with Zook’s recruitment, and he expects to play at the Safety position for the Black Knights. He’s impressed with Monken, who led Georgia Southern to a victory at Florida last season without throwing a single pass. Eagle accomplishments Zook was part of a St. Thomas class that “brought back a tradition of winning to the school.” In the fall of 2010, he was the only member of the freshman class playing on the varsity team. He lined up at wide receiver and safety. As a sophomore, Zook primarily focused on wide receiver, but the team needed a boost and moved him to quarterback. The result was a run to the state semifinals where the Eagles lost to eventual state champion, Fort Worth Nolan. He also led STH to its first win over St. Pius X in six years. As the years progressed, Zook’s classmates joined him at the varsity level, and the results were impressive. During the past two seasons, Zook has played running back, wide receiver and safety as the Eagles have gone 20-3 with two district championships. They also ended a 16-year-losing streak to rival Strake Jesuit with consecutive wins over the Crusaders. “Quarterback was probably my favorite position,” Zook said. “I really liked being the leader. We made a really good run that year.”

Eagles coach Tim Fitzpatrick said Zook primarily played on the defensive side of the ball the past two seasons, partly because that’s where he was projected to play in college. However, he hauled in the winning touchdown pass in the regular season finale, securing a 27-21 win over St. Pius X. “That was definitely special,” Zook said. “I’d gone in on two offensive plays the entire game. Pius had just scored and tied the ballgame. I told Michael (Reul) to throw it to me. He throws a perfect ball. I just had to get under it and it was off to the races.” Fitzpatrick, who played Division I football at Rice University in the late 1980s, said Zook has the skills to succeed at that level. “He’s progressed nicely, and he’s dynamic with the ball,” Fitzpatrick said. “I think he’ll be great. We’re just really proud of Chris and the accomplishments he had, what he did for St. Thomas athletics and the school in general.” Zook is looking forward to playing in the legendary ArmyNavy game, which is played annually – usually in Philadelphia or Baltimore. Army is looking for its first win in the series since 2001. Zook will also get an opportunity to play in front of friends and family in Texas. The Black Knights visit Rice in 2015, play Notre Dame at the Alamodome in San Antonio in 2016 and play at North Texas in 2017. Army finished 3-9 last season in Ellerson’s fifth season, defeating Morgan State, Louisiana Tech and Eastern Michigan. They’ll open the 2014 season at home against Buffalo.

Lutheran High North names baseball, softball coaches By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

Lutheran High North athletic director/head football coach Nathan Robbins has selected the Lions’ baseball and softball coaches for this spring. Robbins will serve as the head baseball coach, and C.J. Guidry will be LHN’s head softball coach. “Coaching baseball is not a long term solution,” Robbins said. “We want to get the program where we can bring in a good coach and have talent in place.” Robbins had been an assistant baseball coach at Dallas Lutheran and Lutheran West in Cleveland, Ohio, but he hasn’t coached the sport in the past five years. He hopes to increase numbers for a program that didn’t win a game in 2013. Robbins replaces Homer Garza, a parent who coached the team last season. The Lions open the season on Feb. 25 against Fort Bend Christian.

Guidry, a North Carolina native, comes to LHN from KIPP Academy’s southwest Houston campus. “I’m really happy about the quality of a guy he is and his knowledge about softball,” Robbins said. “In two seasons, he helped develop KIPP’s program.” Last season, LHN snapped a three-year losing streak with a victory over district rival,

Emery-Weiner. The accomplishment earned the Lady Lions the No. 9 spot in The Leader’s Top 10 sports stories of 2013. Coach Bill Kuhn, a parent, didn’t return due to time commitments from his full-time job. The Lady Lions will open the season on March 20 against archival, Lutheran South.

Reagan, Scarborough teams named sportsmanship finalists Two area high school football teams were among the finalists for the Touchdown Club of Houston Sportsmanship Award. Reagan High, the defending Class 4A-District 21 champions, was selected as a finalist in the 4A Division, for the first time while Scarborough, a perennial Sportsmanship finalist, was once again a nominee in the 3A category. The winners were announced during a luncheon on Wednesday at the JW Marriott, across the street from the Galleria. Results were not available at press time. “It’s a good deal,” said Reagan coach Stephen Dixon, who was a finalist for the TD Club’s Coach of the Year honor. “you get picked by your peers and the referees themselves. It’s

something that I appreciate. Our coaching staff is full of class and full of character.” Scarborough interim head coach Jared Rothenberg said the nomination is a reflection on the Spartans’ entire program. “Being nominated for the

Sportsmanship Award speaks to the character of our football players and program as a whole,” Rothenberg said. “Even when other teams have players that are chirping and talking, we tell our players to do their talking between the whistles and try and let their play speak for them.”

Top: St. Thomas High senior Chris Zook defends a pass during a victory over rival Strake Jesuit last season. Zook will sign with the West Point football team on Wednesday. Below: Zook was a four-year varsity player for the Eagles and led them to a 20-3 record, including two district championships the past two seasons. (Submitted photos)

Classic cars showcased for a good cause By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

U.S. Army Specialist Aaron Mays, a North Houston resident, and Adolf Hoep & Son Garage owner Kathryn van der Pol came up with an idea to support the troops overseas. Mays has gone to Hoep & Son to get his car serviced since 2008. He discussed with van der Pol the possibility of sending care packages to members of his Texas Army National Guard unit stationed in Afghanistan. Sixty-four of the unit’s 171 members are stationed in Afghanistan where they build schools, hospitals and infrastructure for the local residents. Mays, who had been deployed to Iraq, Kuwait and Haiti in 2009-10, said soldiers received care packages around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but he’d like to create an opportunity for his fellow soldiers to receive them year-round. van der Pol agreed, and combined the care package effort with Hoep’s Fourth Annual Classic and Custom Car Show last Saturday. “It will boost morale for the soldiers,â€? Mays said. “When you’re away from home like that, it’s good to know that people are still showing their support. They haven’t forgotten about you.â€? The money from the car show’s sponsors will fund the purchase of items for the care package. In addition, students from Garden Oaks Elementary

School and Harper Alternative School will bake cookies for the troops. “I think it is a great idea,â€? said Lt. Brittney Dowdy, the ofďŹ cer in charge of the unit, which deployed in January. During the show, car enthusiasts listened to 1950s music and had the opportunity to see 22 classic and custom cars, including a 1935 Studebaker Ford pickup truck. Chris Andrews of Magnolia, a retired U.S. Marine, rebuilt the truck, which can now go 80 miles per hour, and decorated it with Marine Corps-related bumper stickers. Andrews brings the classic vehicle to car shows but doesn’t drive it. Robin Dobbins of Deer Park brought his 1972 Dodge Charger, which he drives regularly. “I don’t need a garage queen,â€? Dobbins said. “It’s too much fun to drive.â€? A 1993 Cadillac Allante that had been used as the pace
