Promotions abound as big game nears

By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com If there’s one thing that Super Bowl enthusiasts are going to be doing in the coming days, it’s eating and drinking. And Leader area businesses are ready for them. “With our proximity to the downtown area, we do anticipate a large influx of visitors and we are excited to welcome them to Texas’ oldest craft brewery,” said Priscilla Walker of Saint Arnold Brewing Company. “We are extending hours and will have our extra bars open to deal with the crowds. Everyone on staff will be around to help out.” All of the brewery’s events are open to the public, minus “Super Beef Sunday” which is for ticket holders only. As of press time, tickets are still available. Eureka Heights Brew Company at 941 W 18th St. has been gearing up for Super Bowl for over a month now. Co-founder Heather Swift says they will be open every day this week with extended hours. Swift said they also created a door flyer to encourage neighbors and nearby hotels to visit the taproom. The front of the card promotes their normal hours and the back has the hours for Super Bowl week. If they still have flyers left after local distribution they may take some to the hotels downtown. “We have a lot of fun activities happening in the taproom all week long,” said Swift. “On Sunday we’re having a corn hole tournament, during The Puppy Bowl, and a portion of Buckle Bunny beer sales will go to Big Fix Houston. Of course we’re staying open late to show the big game.” Berryhill Baja Grill is also marketing themselves to locals and visitors. “We are staffing up and adjusting food orders in anticipation of increased business for game day and the days leading up to it,” said Nikki Blanchard, regional director for the restaurant group. “We have been marketing to local hotels and joined the Greater Houston

Convention & Visitors Bureau to get better connected. Our catering manager in The Woodlands has joined as a volunteer and will be working at the NFL Experience at the George R. Brown Convention Center.” Berryhill Baja Grill was also in business 13 years ago when Houston last hosted the Super Bowl. “We do feel the pressure more for this Super Bowl than the previous one,” said Blanchard. “It seems bigger this time around.” Jamie Smith with Delicious Concepts says that Ritual, 602 Studewood St., a co-creation of Delicious Concepts owner Ken Bridge, and Felix Florez, owner of Black Hill Meats, is joining forces with Onion Creek, Fitzgerald’s, Little Woodrow’s, and Christian’s Tailgate for a White Oak Super Street Party. From Thursday through Saturday, the destinations will have drink specials and live music. On Sunday, Ritual will be celebrating with drink specials and a pig roast until the game is over. “We’re bringing in extra staffing, taking inventory, renting extra equipment, and

working on staff training for the finer points of service,” said Felix Florez. Smith said they rely heavily on their valet service for parking. “We have been taking reservations and parties from guests who are coming in from Australia, Europe, and across the United States,” she said. “We are as eager to celebrate with them as our regulars this coming weekend.” Harold’s in the Heights’ Alli Jarrett hopes to see a lot of visitors who venture to neighborhoods outside downtown to get a taste of Houston’s culinary scene. “We are hopeful many may check out Robert Earl Keen at The Heights Theater and eat or drink with us before or after the show,” she said. Jarrett is also excited to host an official NFL event called Rebuilding Together Houston. On Friday, in Independence Heights, Jarrett will team up with seven other restaurants to provide lunch to construction volunteers and participants who are finishing up a 17-month-long campaign to restore 500 homes in the Houston area called Super Im-

pact 17. A cook-off competition showcasing tailgate foods is also part of the festivities. “Due to the numerous popup venues throughout the city some of our staff will be working those events, as well as at our restaurant, through the week to maximize their wallets,” said Jarrett. Finally, there are the businesses targeting couch potatoes. “Our company Game Day Party Foods is taking pre-orders for Superbowl Game day parties,” said Kitchen 205’s Laura Basurto. “We will be delivering on Super Bowl Sunday for orders placed in advance.”

Finding Yourself In An Unexpected Life Transition? Let’s get started with

Honest Conversations®

NFL creates boom for area businesses By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Johanna Terry of Johanna Terry Events at 4500 W. 34th St. is having her busiest January ever thanks to the NFL’s Business Connect program which is designed to connect diverse, local businesses to contracting opportunities related to the Super Bowl. “It is crazy how slammed we are,” said Terry, who noted that January is generally a down month for the events industry. “We actually had to turn away several large projects that we would never dream to turn away especially for a January.” It was in February 2016 that Terry attended an information session which explained the application process to the events industry. She learned that one of the major requirements to apply was to be certified in one or more of the

following categories: MinorityOwned Enterprise, WomanOwned Enterprise, a Disabled Veteran-Owned Enterprise or a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender-Owned Enterprise. “I just so happened to be on the tail end of my certification process to become a WomanOwned Enterprise which was a very long tedious process when we attended this meeting,” said Terry. “I remember a lot of people being upset that if they were not certified in any of the above, they would not be able to become so before the deadline.” Terry received her own certification two days prior to the deadline to apply for the NFL Business Connect Program. She said the application process for that was less tedious than the WBE’s but did require her to explain the history of her business and what she could offer.

“Everyone that applied was then asked to attend a ‘company pitch’ session to the Houston Super Bowl Committee,” Terry said. “We were asked to bring a portfolio of our work and had five minutes to pitch ourselves, our company and products to the committee. It was definitely intense but a fun process.” When she made the suppliers list, Terry said the bids started coming in. Terry said she’s working with the Super Bowl Committee on a large, high profile event that she is not allowed to disclose until after the event, and is also doing two events with an out of state company that contracted her through the Business Connect Resource Guide. There are also some other high profile gigs in the mix. See Boom P. 3B
