What’s your sweet spot? By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Leader readers chimed in on their favorite places around town to indulge in a sugar fix. See if yours made the very unscientific top 10. In no particular order: #1 Fat Cat Creamery, 1901 N Shepherd, got a shout out from multiple readers. They offer three year round flavors: Cat’s Meow Mexican Vanilla, Milk Chocolate Stout and Strawberry Buttermilk as well as seasonal offerings. Their Salted Caramel gets rave reviews as does their homemade hot fudge sauce. #2 Red Dessert Dive, 1045 Studewood St., also has a rabid following. “Delicious sweets paired with prosecco, wine, beer or coffee,â€? said Tonia Whitney. “Hands down the best.â€? Christy Bohannon gets their cookie brownies and Allison Newport says the cheesecake is amazing. Lisa Cari notes that the menu changes every week. #3 Empire CafĂŠ, 1732

Westheimer Rd., in between Shepherd and Montrose, draws Brad Anderson in with their half price cake night on Mondays. “The coconut cheesecake is to die for, said Sonia Tersigne. #4 Liberty Kitchen (Petite Sweets): Liberty Kitchen, 1050 Studewood, gets an assist with their pies and cakes from sister shop Petite Sweets on West Alabama. Ashley Day is a big fan of Petite Sweets’ Cookies & Cream Cake Shakes as well as Lance Fegen’s Raspberry-White Chocolate Bread Pudding. #5: The Fluff Bake Bar inside Revival Market, 550 Heights Blvd., has a fan in Lisa Cari: “Chef Rebecca Masson’s Fluffernutter cookies and Kitchen Sink cookies are amazing. Masson will be opening her own storefront on West Gray soon but she’ll still offer her wares at Revival. #6: Becks Prime Jessi Heiner can’t get enough of the chocolate malts at Becks, 115 See Sweet, P. 3B

heading up the Hunky Dory kitchen and Graham Laborde will head up Bernadine’s. Both restaurants will share a private dining room; however the two will have their own bar areas and will also share a large wine cellar with hundreds of different wines to choose from. According to the company’s website, preview dinners were also held for both restaurants earlier

this year. Treadsack owns several other familiar restaurants in The Leader area, including Downhouse, located at 1801 Yale St., D&T Drive Inn, located at 1307 Enid St. and Sugar & Rice, located at 811 Heights Blvd. Foreign Correspondents, which Bernadine’s replaced at the North Shepherd Drive location, will instead open on North Main.

A new restaurant is opening in the old Stella Sola location at 1001 Studewood Dr. at 10th St. in the Heights and its generating a lot of interest. The restaurant is called Black & White and identifies itself as a “contemporary Mediterranean and seafood bistro. Notably, Black & White will feature two restaurants in the beautiful space that formerly housed one. “It is a big place, said Black & White owner Hernan Garcia. “It has seating for more than 200, so we thought we would offer two different restaurants with a shared kitchen. That’s why we chose to call it Black & White. The black side will offer Mediterranean and European fare. The white side will concentrate on fresh seafood and may be a little more casual. Both will offer good, honest food with a full meal in the $40 per person range. Garcia and his partner Sven Hossfeld live in Mexico City and filed their partnership as Snapper Kitchen LLC with the State of Texas in 2014 to open an eatery in Houston. Garcia has several popular and successful restaurants operating in Mexico City already. “Last year, I visited my brother who lives in Houston. When See Black and White, P. 3B
