Pat H. Foley debuts new look By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com Erik Hendrickson, Funeral Director at Pat H. Foley Funeral Directors, knows better than most that times have changed in the funeral business. After over 50 years of serving the community, he is hoping a slew of renovations and additions to the iconic funeral home will meet the ever changing needs of local residents. “When it opened 50 years ago, the paper quoted it as Mr. Foley’s new corporate headquarters located in the near northwest Houston countryside, Hendrickson said. “Things have changed a little bit since then. Hendrickson hopes to continue the late Pat H. Foley’s trends of innovation, with a post-modern update to the building’s interior, located at 1200 W. 34th St., with a greater emphasis on providing options for families to mourn loved ones. The funeral home features major renovations to its chapel and side rooms and will also

the symbolic Asian-style garden in the center of the complex. The group will be hosting an open house celebration from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 26, featuring refreshments, entertainment, door prizes and tours of the newly redesigned facility. At two years in the making, Hendrickson said it had been time to bring some changes to Pat H.Foley Funeral Directors. The last major work on the building was completed in the 1990s, and the new round of additions represents a slow but steady change for many in the business of running funeral homes. “The funeral home industry is a little slow to change,â€? Hendrickson said. “However, today there are a variety of different choices and styles of services, Photo by Jonathan Garris like custom-tailoring services to celebrate Pat H. Manready Mercantile celebrates one year anniversary TC Jester

For most shops and boutiques, making the sale is what matters most. Over on 19th St., Manready Mercantile has a different outlook than most and believes what truly matters is the story they tell about the items carried within the store - and also that the stories have a positive ripple effect from a consumer and business stand point. The home goods store recently celebrated their one year anniversary on March 28 and 29 at 321 W. 19th St. Before moving into their shop in the Heights, Owner Travis Weaver and a few of his buddies were working in his cramped apartment to turn pre-existing products that were typically only marketed and sold to women into items that were okay for guys to use too. The crew started taking products that could be manufactured in Weaver’s apartment like candles, bubble bath and bath salts. “Stuff like that really wasn’t all that manly, but why was it only okay for women? Weaver asked. “Those are things that guys could use, but for some reason it got one sided over the years and it became pink bottles and smelled like flowers. Changing that one-sided perception is exactly what Weaver did. They made bath salt, but called it a ‘tub soak’ and put it in a whiskey bottle. They made bubble bath, but called it tub elixir and, again, put it in a whiskey bottle to give it appeal to their male audience. “We made those one-sided things okay to use and it was great because we created a market for women to buy for the ‘hard to buy for guy,’ Weaver said. After putting together their initial product line, Weaver
