Gigi’s Playhouse serves local children with Down Syndrome

By Elizabeth Villareal For The Leader I am honored to introduce you to three of our local neighbors, savvy businesswomen who share a burning passion and the common goal of opening GiGi’s Playhouse Houston in order to bring this fantastic, life-giving community to Houston’s individuals with Down syndrome.

In addition to loving and supporting their own children born with Down Syndrome, Amy McDonald, Amanda Kreshover and Kristal Casey are moving forward with excitement, spreading the word about GiGi’s Playhouse and searching for a location to house GiGi’s Playhouse Houston.

There is a GiGi’s Playhouse in Sugarland, but the location is not convenient, to say the least, for families in Central and North Houston. Most children attend programs at GiGi’s Playhouse multiple times per week and the commute is not workable for many. An estimated 6,000 children and adults with Down Syndrome live in the Greater Houston Area and GiGi’s Playhouse Houston is for them, making free therapeutic and educational programming available to many more families. There are five Playhouses in the greater Chicago area, and local leaders of GiGi’s Playhouse hope to replicate that model in Houston over the next few years.

Braun announces Houston Heights Retail Development for lease

Braun Enterprises recently sent out a flyer about their development on 2522 Yale Street, which is close to the Whole Foods 365 that will be opening at Yale and 610. The development will be two different buildings in addition to popular Treadsack bar Johnny’s Gold Brick, which will be staying.

“We are building around it,” said Braun’s Zach Wolf.

The total size of the development is 12,574 square feet with about 8,000 square feet available in building one and 3,000 square feet in building two.

Heights shop provides a safe haven

However, one duo in the Heights has their sights set on helping parents navigate those unknown waters.

Pure Parenting Shop owner Sarah Godwin set out with a mission about four years ago when she first opened her shop as a native Houstonian displaced to Pennsylvania.

“I created this place as a safe space, because I was an out-of-towner,” she said.

Ali, who started in the food business over 20 years ago, is really looking forward to being part of the Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, and Heights communities. Being part of a neighborhood is important to him. He enjoys knowing people’s names when they come

GiGi’s Playhouse isn’t just about showing up for therapy and hard work, it’s about purposeful programs, celebrating individuals for who they are today, after school tutoring in academics, social activities for teens and career training! It’s so exciting to report that GiGi’s Playhouse owns a coffee shop in Illinois called Hugs & Mugs where teens and adults work and earn a paycheck. Proceeds go back into GiGi’s Playhouse and help to support the program.

Kreshover, McDonald and Casey are hopeful Houston will one day soon have a Hugs & Mugs coffee shop, but first, GiGi’s Playhouse Houston must get off the ground.

Kreshover and McDonald met when their sons, Theodore and Davis, both 2 years old, were born within days of one another in the same hospital and were in the NICU at the same time. A precious friendship was sparked and the two mothers shared their experiences as new mothers of babies with Down syndrome, supporting one another through what, for them, was uncharted territory. Thrilled to welcome their babies, introducing them to family and friends and fielding their questions, loving their little miracles, but unsure about what was next which way to go.

Beginning immediately to navigate through and searching for the resources their

sons needed (infant feeding therapy, physical therapy, etc.), and finding shocking limitations in coverage with their own health insurance for the therapies their sons needed then and would need in the future, the two eventually discovered the miracle that is GiGi’s Playhouse. Kreshover and McDonald are the founders of GiGi’s Playhouse Houston and Kreshover, an attorney, is President.

Casey met Kreshover when she noticed Kreshover’s beautiful son, Theodore, now 2 years old, in the line at Target one day and started talking to him because she just couldn’t resist, she says, laughing. Introducing herself to Theodore’s parents there in the Target line, Casey shared the fact that her sweet son, Zayne, now 7, also has Down syndrome. Casey was thrilled to learn about GiGi’s Playhouse Houston and has leapt in to help in the search for a facility to house GiGi’s Playhouse Houston.

Along with McDonald, whose precious son Davis is also 2 years old, Kreshover and Casey are seeking a commercial rated and ADA-compliant space to lease around 2,000 sq. ft. in size, minimum, right here in our own Leader community. This is the second annual Women @ Work luncheon held by The Leader, and as last year’s attendees can attest, there is no event in the area like this.

Our speaker last year was great--she not only did all of this but had a very high-powered job and TWINS! We all had lots of laughs, good food and it was great to get to meet the Leader representatives and other women from the area. Really looking forward to the next one!

About our Charity The Mission of Yahweh is a faith–based shelter that empowers, enriches and restrores the lives of homeless women and children and provides outreach services to low-income communities.

Since 1961, The Mission has empowered our clients by providing basic life skills, education, job readiness, and spiritual enrichment.

Our primary goal is to help with skills and education so residents can earn a livable wage as a path toward independence and permanent housing. We are able to house 125 women and children and on average 40% of that number are children. Right now, 25% of our residents are Harvey Evacuees.

About our Luncheon Speaker Susan Jadlowski is the Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer for Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. She has guided the hospital to many prestigious honors, including recently receiving Magnet designation, one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can receive for excellence in nursing. Jadlowski and her husband have one daughter and one granddaughter. In their spare time, they enjoy participating in water sports.

Run The Grove set for 4/14 For The Leader The Timbergrove Manor Neighborhood Association is excited to announce the fourth annual Run the Grove 5K and Kids’ Fun Run presented by Tommie Vaughn Ford. Proceeds from the April 14 event will be invested in revitalization of the Timbergrove common areas through the City of Houston’s Adopt an Esplanade Program.

Beautiful, well-maintained public spaces reflect community pride, enhance the urban environment, and support rising property values.

Proceeds will also support trail maintenance and preservation efforts at West 11th Street. TMNA is pledging to contribute generously to this designated wilderness area in order to make the interpretative trails within the park more accessible to all of our neighbors. This year’s event will honor the memory of Dr. Lorraine Cherry, our Timbergrove neighbor whose dedication to the preservation of nature created West 11th Street Park, a 20-acre pocket wilderness in the heart of Timbergrove.

St. Pius X and St. Thomas were both well-represented with the recent release of the TAPPS All-District 3-6A basketball players.

St. Thomas had the second most named to the All-District first team with four players selected. St. Pius X, which advanced all the way to the TAPPS 6A state championship game before losing to district rival Tomball Concordia Lutheran, had two players make the first-team roster.

A total of 15 players each were named to the first and second teams with 11 more players receiving honorable mention.

Senior forward Jared Cebrun and senior guards Max Vosloh, Philip Everist, and George Fisher were the quartet of St. Thomas players were voted All-District by the league’s coaches.

For St. Pius X, senior postman Markeith Williams, who averaged double figures in points and rebounds, along with small forward Stanley Asiegbu, who averaged just under 12 points per game,

Despite both teams losing in the Bi-District round of the Region III-6A soccer playoffs last week, the Heights boys’ and girls’ squads had outstanding winter seasons.

Boys After failing to make the playoffs last year, the Bulldogs rebounded nicely this season to finish third in the hotlycontested District 18-6A. Sam Houston, which reached the state tournament just three years ago, was the district champion going 9-1-2 to finish ahead of Bellaire, which was second and 8-2-2 overall. The Heights was third at 6-6.

In the playoff opener last week at Pridgeon Stadium in Cy-Fair ISD, the Heights ran into and lost 2-0 to a Cy Ridge team that is looking to make a playoff run after they reached the quarterfinals last year. The Ridge scored a goal in each half to get the win as the Heights had some opportunities but couldn’t get one in the net.

While the seven graduating seniors will be missed in the program, the Heights have a nice group of young players returning next year, including sophomore Miguel Mendoza, who scored two goals in a 21 late-season win over Westside that proved to be a pivotal win in their playoff hopes.

Mendoza was also named the Houston Chronicle Player of the Week after that game.

Panthers, Eagles dominate TAPPS 3-6A All-District rosters

The Bulldogs finish the year at 9-13-1 overall.

Girls The Lady Bulldogs had a solid comeback season come to an end in the first round of the Region III playoffs last week, when they lost 2-0 to Cy Ranch at Cy Falls High School on the northwest side of the county.

The Heights finished third in District 18-6A behind undefeated district champion Bellaire and second-place Westside. The Cardinals dominated the district on some level, going 12-0 and winning those dozen games by a combined 96-3 score. Westside was second and the Heights came in third at 7-3-2 with Lamar taking the fourth playoff spot.

For the Bulldogs, after finishing near the bottom of the district last year, turning things around the way they did this year was quite an accomplishment.

And while they had a few seniors, they also relied heavily on a lot of sophomores and juniors like midfielders Jennifer Eguia and Emmy Sosa to help get things back on track after a 2017 season that saw them lose 14 of their first 15 games and never really get in the district playoff picture. The Lady Bulldogs finished the season with a 9-7-1 mark overall.

Flowers, and forward Christopher Rhodes all were listed honorable mention for the Eagles.

Senior guard Kristopher Burton, along with junior guard Sydney Shipp and junior small forward Terrell Jenkins were the Panthers who made that roster.

Based just on the grades of the players, it seems the Panthers will have a nucleus of players returning with their eyes on getting back to the state championship and St. Thomas will have a whole lot of new players after losing at least two-thirds of their roster to graduation.

On the girls side, St. Pius X had one player named to the District 3-6A first team and one more on the second team.

Freshman guard Tyberlin Criswell was the lone Panther named All-District and junior guard D’Andrea Hunter was selected to the second team.

Criswell was one of just two freshmen that made first team.

The district’s coaches voted 12 girls onto the first and second teams.
