ALDI supermarket to move to GO center By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com There are more, big changes afoot at the Garden Oaks Shopping Center on North Shepherd. Yoga Collective, which occupies the space at the end of the complex at 3938-D North Shepherd, sent out an email to clients which said they had been informed by the property management company that they were early terminating Yoga Collective’s lease. “We would need to vacate our space in order to accommodate a new, larger tenant,” wrote Rhia Robinson. Now, Danny Morales with Hartman Management – no relation to the real estate firm Hartman & Associates – says that the new tenant will be German supermarket chain ALDI who already has more than 25 stores in the Houston area. ALDI, a national discount supermarket chain, has signed a ground lease for 17,000 square feet at the northern end cap. They will build their own structure which will sit on Yoga Collective’s vacated space and on the vacant space next to that. Blast Fitness, on the other side of the currently vacant space, says they are staying. ALDI is a discount supermarket chain which describes its “unique style” on their website. They keep grocery carts in one place. Customers put a quarter in the cart, shop and then return the cart to get the quarter back. ALDI says that helps to keep prices low so they don’t have to retrieve carts. Customers bring bags or buy reusable ones at checkout. Costs savings such as these translate into 50 percent savings to the customer, according to the retailer.

About ALDI ALDI operates more than 1,600 stores in 35 states. According to their website, they take a simple, cost-effective approach to grocery shopping that saves shoppers on their grocery bills. They do this by carrying their own brands, renting shopping carts and requiring customers to bag their own groceries. Does ALDI carry brand names? Shoppers will find that more than 90 percent of the products in the stores are ALDI exclusive brands. ALDI exclusive brands allow the grocer to provide their products without passing on costs associated with the national brands, such as marketing and advertising. Recently, they have added a limited selection of national brands in addition to ALDI exclusive brands. The company says they made that decision in response to feedback from customers, who have strong brand preferences, yet would like to complete more of their grocery shopping at ALDI. How much of your weekly shopping can you do at ALDI? Customers can find the majority of their average weekly shopping list at ALDI, including fresh meats, fruits, vegetables and bakery items. You can visit the store’s website to find out more. Why do you need a quarter to use a shopping cart at ALDI? The shopping cart rental system is one of the ALDI efficiencies that enable the store to keep prices low. New customers may be surprised by the simple cart rental system. Not only do customers get their deposit back, there are no stray carts taking up space in the parking lot or causing dents to cars. By not having to hire someone to police the shopping carts, the store says it is able to pass the savings on to customers.

presented by Area women honored during Leader luncheon May 12 For The Leader Next week, The Leader has two special events planned to honor the women in our community who help make our businesses and homes tick. On Friday, May 12, The Leader will host our inaugural Women at Work luncheon at Ginger & Fork restaurant for the women honored by their businesses and (in some cases) significant others. During that luncheon, Michol Ecklund, the deputy general counsel for Marathon Oil and, more importantly, a mother, will speak about her position and what she believes are the keys to balancing a home

and work life. In the Saturday, May 13 edition of The Leader, we will publish an entire edition dedicated to women in our community – from business women to moms who run our homes. The cost of the luncheon on May 12 is $50, and tables are available for discounted prices. To purchase a ticket, call us at (713) 686-8494, or email jonathan@theleadernews.com If you’re a business that would like to promote the women who work in your office, or if you’d like to purchase seats at the luncheon, contact The Leader for more information.

If the early voting returns are any indication, very few people know or care about an election being held this weekend. HISD is asking general election people to educate when 713,083 themselves on the people in Har- recapture vote. ris County had already voted. In that November election, voters were urged to vote against sending $162 million to the state, in essence forcing the hand of the Texas Legislature to change the allocation of money per student. It was either that, or property rich taxes inside HISD borders would have been annexed – forever – into other school districts. After some political hand-wringing, the Legislatures upped the amount of money allocated for each student, dropping the amount of “recapture” HISD must pay to the state down to $77 million. Board members Anna Eastman and Rhonda Skillern-Jones were among those who swung their votes to voting ‘Yes’ for recapture. In fact, there are no noticeable opponents to HISD sending the recapture payments. Voters – very few of them, it seems – are being asked to go to the polls Saturday to change a “No” vote to a “Yes” vote, guaranteeing the property rich buildings in Houston will not be annexed into other school districts.

National news on housing not all true in area By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com As local neighborhoods continue to grow and develop, throngs of prospective homebuyers will likely continue to pound the pavement in search of that perfect fit for their retirement, raising a young family or starting over—but will they be in or out of luck? According to a CNBC report last week, listed homes are being plucked off the market at a blinding rate, and “sellers are firmly in the driver’s seat” at entry level where the demand is highest. According to the report, national supply of homes for sale was down 6.6 percent compared to this time last year, making it one of the strongest seller’s markets ever. In Houston, however, that adjective does not seem to describe the market at all. “We have what seems to be like an adequate amount of inventory,” said Keller Williams agent Pam Efferson. Efferson said the Houston area currently has a 3.8-month supply of unsold inventory according to the Houston Association of Realtors which in and of itself would seem to indicate an unbalanced market, as the CNBC report says a balanced market typically includes a five to six-month supply. However, Efferson said several other factors have contributed to creating a rare balance in the See Housing P. 2A
