Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital’s Stroke Program reduces Door-to-Needle time, achieves Top 5 percent ranking from Healthgrades

With close teamwork and new processes that expedite treatment, the Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital Stroke Program has reduced its median door-to-needle time – the time it takes to deliver intravenous plasminogen activator (tPA) to a patient with acute ischemic stroke after arrival at the Emergency Center. “If administered within three hours – and up to 4.5 hours in certain eligible patients – tPA may improve the chances of recovery from a stroke,” said Reza Sadeghi, M.D., a neurologist and clinical neurophysiologist affiliated with Mischer Neuroscience Associates and the stroke medical director at Memorial Hermann Northwest. “The benefit of tPA is greatest when given early. Guidelines for U.S. hospitals recommend treatment within 60 minutes of arrival at the Emergency Center. That’s our goal, and we’re meeting it.” For 12 consecutive years, the Stroke Program at Memorial Hermann Northwest has achieved fivestar ranking from Healthgrades for the treatment of stroke. The hospital’s success in reducing door-toneedle time is one of many factors leading to its 2014 Healthgrades ranking among the top 5 per-

Women’s health gets a mobility boost

Dr. Daniel Roubein, a radiologist with more than 20 years of experience, recommends that women 40 years old and older get a mammogram once a year. There are exceptions when it should be done earlier, such as family history. Roubein wanted to make it easier for women to get access to mammograms, so last October, he developed a fully certified mobile mammography unit for patients. Mammosafe works with Houston area businesses to set up appointments for mammograms in the business’ parking lot, so employees don’t have to travel to make a doctor’s appointment. “A high percentage of women were over 40 and never had a mammogram,” Roubein said. “When we’re right outside the parking lot, it made it impossible for them to skip it.” While Mammosafe isn’t the first mobile Mammogram unit, Roubein said it is thorough and has a strong attention to customer service and

details. The results for the mammograms are revealed in a short period of time to ease patients’ anxiety, and everything is done in a “secure, safe” manner that respects patients’ privacy. Roubein goes over the images with the patient and talks about the results. If there is a problem, he puts the patient in touch with a health care professional or communicates with the patient’s doctor.
If more scans are necessary, Roubein’s staff takes care of it on the scene. In traditional medical settings, patients may set up a follow-up appointment that is 2-3 weeks away. Mammosafe can often spend 2-3 hours at a location because it will serve as many patients as possible. Recently, it visited a school district north of Houston, and teachers were able to get their mammograms during their planning or lunch times.
“We feel really good about being able to get out to the patients,” Roubein said. Mammosafe has recently partnered with the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas and would like to work with more businesses in the Heights. For more information, log on to mammosafe.com

The Next Step, an approach for Autism By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
Lauren Harrington Abel of Next Step Academy advocates an approach to autism that takes the whole child into account. (Photo by Paul Ladd Photography)
FREEDOM FREEDOM FROMFROM
JOINT JOINT PAIN PAIN
Barbara Haney’s son Bobby is one of the 1 in 68 United States children who have an autism spectrum disorder. “At six years of age, even with four years of therapy under his belt, he still couldn’t talk, couldn’t focus, couldn’t sit still or follow the simplest of instructions,”said Bobby’s mother Barbara Haney. “He’d been in therapy since he was two but no school would take him.” Though word of mouth, Haney found The Next Step Academy on Brookwoods in Oak Forest and its founder Lauren Harrington Abel. Within two weeks of enrollment, Haney said her son began answering yes and no questions for the first time in his life. “Fast forward fouryears, our son now 10, is talking up a storm and is mastering grade appropriate courses - reading, writing, math, everything.” Abel said that this kind of progress is not unusual at The Next Step
Academy but that it is a result of years of work in the field and developing a model which addressed the whole child. She became interested in working with special needs children as the caregiver for twins, both of whom had autism. Abel attended the University of Houston and got a psychology degree, later volunteering at a local therapy center in Bellaire where she started to embrace a ground up approach to helping kids with autism. “I fell in love with the work,”she said. After working at another therapeutic organization that only did behavior analysis, Abel thought about branching off on her own. She also explored a wide range of therapies, studying educational kinesiology and becoming a licensed Brain Gym instructor and licensed Rhythmic Movement Training (RMT) International instructor. Stroke, from P. 1B Dr. Sadeghi. “On a regular basis, we identify processes to improve and implement changes to decrease time to administer tPA.” According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. “We’re dedicated to providing a superior level of care to stroke patients,” said Dr. Sadeghi. “If an even higher level of care is needed, we transfer patients immediately by Memorial Hermann Life Flight to the Mischer Neuroscience Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.” Stroke patients at Memorial Hermann Northwest have access to clinical trials through the hospital’s collaboration with UTHealth Medical School. The CLOTBUST Hands-free Trial

“The entire time I’d worked with kids, I had used therapies across the spectrum,”said Abel. “I couldn’t find an organization that did what I did, pulling all the different things together. I knew that this is what worked and I took a leap of faith.” A leap of faith it was. At first Abel travelled to see clients by appointment until she had enough interest to start a school out of her house on Brookwoods. Today there are two campuses in the Houston area, 17 students and almost as many staff. Technically a therapeutic day treatment center, Next Step Academy does take students for full or half days and offers them a school curriculum including music, art and physical education. Interest is so strong, the school is moving to an adjacent building on Brookwoods. They also started a campus at Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Sugarland which serves six full time students. “I had a client who was driving from Missouri City to Brookwoods,”said Abel. “There’s a real need in that community and we wanted to offer parents a closer option.” About half of the children who some to Next Step Academy are non-verbal and most have had no formal education. Many have been turned away from other schools in Houston.
under way at Mischer Neuroscience Institute and the Medical School is pioneering the use of a hands-free, operatorindependent device to deliver external ultrasound to enhance the effects of tPA. Another ongoing trial evaluating the safety and effectiveness of tPA for wake-up stroke may benefit the 20 percent of people who have strokes while sleeping. Currently, tPA has been proven effective only when given to patients within 4.5 hours after the onset of stroke symptoms. When patients wake up with stroke, the time of symptom onset is unknown. “Treatment for acute ischemic stroke doesn’t stop after delivery of tPA,” said Dr. Sadeghi. “We look at each individual’s risk factors and develop a plan to modify those risks.” TIRR Memorial Hermann* Outpatient Rehabilitation on
the Campus of Memorial Hermann Northwest provides individualized therapy for adults and for children age 12 and above. In addition to treating stroke patients, the facility offers therapy for neuromuscular disorders, vertigo and vestibular disorders, cancer and lymphedema, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and amputations. “On average, only about 5 percent of patients with ischemic stroke arrive at the hospital early enough to be treated with tPA,” said Dr. Sadeghi. “It’s extremely important for everyone to recognize the warning signs of stroke.” The symptoms of stroke are distinct because they happen fast: Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body)
“These schools are very selective about the students they accept. Their fear is that if they take on children they don’t believe can be helped, it will hurt their success rate and thus their reputation will suffer,”Barbara Haney said. The integrated method that Abel has pioneered to help her students is called the IDEAL®model, or the Integrated Developmental Educational Approach to Learning. It addresses core foundation abilities, learning readiness abilities and cognitive and academic abilities, which in turn gets kids ready to tackle appropriate academic and developmental milestones. Abel said her teachers bring different skills to the table which supports different therapeutic and learning styles: “Some are formal teachers, and some have a background in psychology, sports, or art. We are teaching them how to learn in the dynamic world.” The therapies don’t have to be complicated. Parent Dana Dressel recalls the time Abel worked all day with her reluctant son to chew gum. “Lauren had the vision to know that chewing gum would help him cope with his oral motor issues and increase his ability to focus,”said Dressel. “And now, his piano teacher always
checks to make sure that he has gum before his lesson.” It’s Abel’s work on maturing an individual’s nervous system that is making such a difference. “The brain and body work together. We customize for each child,” she said. “The system is broken at schools. This works for everyone, not just the special kids, although they need it the most.”

Energy Corridor ‘Bike to Work Day’ starts in the Heights Ten years and rolling, The Energy Corridor Bike to Work Day is 6:30-7:30 a.m. Thursday, May 15, when devoted cycling commuters and newcomers from the Heights, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest and points west will make a dawn ride into work, either solo or alongside convoys from some of the world’s top energy companies. One of the annual ride’s traditional starting points is the historic Heights firehouse. Bike to Work Day - designed to celebrate bicycling both as an invigorating way to commute and as a recreational delight - will end with a morning party at the Terry Hershey Park gazebo, hosted by The Energy Corridor District.
“The Energy Corridor Bike to Work Day is an experience not to be missed by anyone who loves cycling or wants to experience commuting via pedal power,” said Clark Martinson, longtime bicycling enthusiast and General Manager of The Energy Corridor District Clark Martinson. “Bike to Work Day helps introduce people to the special joys of cycling to work, something that is invigorating both physically and mentally. To find a bicycling partner, Bike to Work aspirants can sign up online at energycorridor.org for Bike Buddies, a program where The Energy Corridor District matches newcomers with veteran cycling commuters on vetted
routes. Riders can also download routes online. Cycling convoys clad in brightly colored cycling shirts - their leaders wearing commemorative 10th Annual Energy Corridor Bike to Work jerseys - will begin their dawn patrol ride at major commuting points serving The Energy Corridor. Many of the convoys are led by devoted bicyclists from Houston’s foremost energy firms. When riders arrive at the Terry Hershey Park gazebo alongside Langham Creek, 15200 Memorial west of Eldridge Parkway, they will be greeted by a morning celebration with breakfast, giveaways, a raffle, bicycle maintenance stations and more.
“It’s a great experience to meet up with like-minded souls and celebrate bicycling. Riders can enjoy a complimentary breakfast served by Shipley’s Do-Nuts, raffle prizes from BP and AAA Texas, and bike maintenance stations run by Bike Barn and Bicycle World of Houston,” explains Kelly Rector, Transportation Coordinator for The Energy Corridor District. “We’ll have fun giveaways from Advancial, KIND Healthy Snacks and others.” To join The Energy Corridor Bike to Work Day fun, sign up at energycorridor.org, or contact Kelly Rector, transportation coordinator for The Energy Corridor District, at krector@energycorridor.org.

Pushups benefit the military wounded It is not often an event will get the type of attention Pushups For Charity has received. The Mayor of Houston, Annise Parker, in an official proclamation delivered to Tom Jackobs, owner of Body3 Fitness Center (www.Body3Fit. com) and one of the presenting sponsors of Pushups For Charity, the mayor said: “The city of Houston commends Tom Jackobs for honoring our
severely wounded men and women of the US Armed Services through his commitment in organizing the Pushups for Charity” scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Body3 Fitness Center, 3562 W. TC Jester Blvd. “The event will be a fun challenge to see who can do as many pushups as possible in 90 seconds, but more importantly who can raise the
most funds for The Boot Campaign. It’s really that simple,” states Jackobs, “It’s really an honor to be recognized by the fourth-largest city and to give back to the same community who has sacrificed so much for our every day freedoms, the men and women of our armed services.” “We urge all citizens to come out and see how many pushups they can do in 90 seconds
and to raise as much money as possible for The Boot Campaign. It doesn’t matter your fitness level, it’s a great cause and we’ll have a great time and great prizes donated from local businesses,” commented Cassandra Gaudet, who is in her fifth year of participating in the event. Medicare Advice: Toni King
House Call Doctors Helping Elderly Stay Well at Home Ms. Toni: Taking my 86 year old mother to the doctor is quite an ordeal because my mother’s heart condition keeps her bedridden. It is an all day process that takes 2 people to just get her to the doctor to check her blood because she takes blood thinner meds. Friends have said I should use a “House Call doctor.” I know nothing about them and was wondering if you could talk about this a little. Can a quality doctor come to our house and will Medicare pay for it. - Thanks, Henry.
Hello‚ Henry: In the past few weeks many of my readers, have asked about house call doctors and are concerned with the changes to Medicare because of Healthcare Reform. They are concerned that this option may not be available. I have good news. The old days when Dr. Welby would come to the house to visit the sick‚ well, those days are back and your mother has plenty of choices. Doctors are making “old fashioned” house calls to keep the sick from having so many readmissions back to the hospital. Not only are doctors making house calls but dentists, eye doctors and even mobile x-ray/ultra-sound machines
Toni King
with technicians are making home visits. This not only provides accessible healthcare for the patient, but also helps to save money for Medicare and her Medicare plan. A house call visit can help keep those who are having a minor ailment turn into a major operation which helps keep so many from an expensive hospital stay. And in return, keeps costs down for Medicare. A doctor or medical provider visits are being accepted and paid for by Original Medicare, Original Medicare with a Medicare supplement and most Medicare Advantage plans (depending on your house call provider being in your Medicare Advantage network).
House call doctors are generally board certified and the providers consist of doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The patient does not have to be home bound to qualify. The house call doctor can schedule regular appointments especially if there is a chronic illness or illnesses or you can schedule appointments as needed. Look online for house call doctors or visiting physicians to find providers in your geographic area. The health information obtained is shared with the patient’s primary care physician by electronic medical records. Better yet, talk to your mother’s current doctor’s office. Many physicians’ offices are making this option available to keep from losing their current Medicare and non-Medicare patients. A house call doctor can coordinate care and what a better way to determine your parent’s medical needs than to see them in the comfort of their home. Larger doctors’ offices are now offering “house call doctors” also known as “home visits”. Many that benefit with a “home visit” are those for whom seeing a doctor is a hardship, those who are shut ins, patients who are confused

or disoriented and those who visit the ER and need follow up visits. In 2014, who would believe that doctors making house calls would be making such a comeback? You might not see a doctor show up in a horse and buggy or even carrying an old black medical bag‚ but today the new house call doctors are coming to your home with many of today’s modern marvels such as X-rays, ultra-sound machines, physical therapist and even a hypodermic needle to draw blood. In today’s times‚ the doctor’s office is coming to you! Confused About Medicare Workshops are coming back to the West University Senior Center. Brooke Smith residents battle developers... and Google? By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com
Brooke Smith residents don’t want to see their historic neighborhood – just west of I-45 and Main – turn into the Washington Heights with dozens of town homes, but there are developers who would like to see it go that way. The residents have spent the past year or so working with city planning officials to restrict their lot sizes from becoming anything besides a single family home. Brooke Smith, which is synonymous with Montie Beach (and bears the Montie Beach moniker for its civic club), has seen its residents try to implement a city-approved lot restriction, which allows residents to make those decisions on a block-by-block basis. Montie Beach Civic Club vice president David Miller and fellow Montie Beach leaders were alarmed by the fact that an individual was distributing fliers less than a mile away, just east of I-45, asking residents to oppose minimum lot sizes. Not surprisingly, the person distributing the fliers was a developer who tried to make the case that lot restrictions would decrease property values. “They wanted to get people scared, and it was strictly profit-motivated,” Miller said. The individual left a phone number and an address on the flier, but didn’t return a call to The Leader. Suzy Hartgrove of the City’s Planning and Development said Montie Beach submitted an application last month for minimum lot restrictions throughout the neighborhood, but she noted it will take a long time for the city to process the application. The opposition to the fliers wasn’t the only thing that upset Montie Beach residents last week.
Many residents noticed that the Brooke Smith neighborhood was referred to as “Tampico Heights” on Google Maps. Tampico Seafood & Cocina Mexicana is the name of a popular restaurant at 2115 Airline Dr., but it’s not located within the neighborhood. Lauren Barriere, a global communications and public affairs associate with Google, said the incorrect name for the neighborhood had been removed but didn’t know specifically why it had appeared. “Various types of data found in Google Maps come from a wide range of sources,” Barriere said. “Our basemap data – things like place names, borders and road networks – come from a combination of third-party providers, public sources and user contributions. Overall, this provides a very comprehensive and upto-date map, but we recognize that there may be occasional inaccuracies that could arise from any of those sources.”

Happy Mother’s Day — including all of you who are “mothers” to your precious pets! Another way to honor this special day is by making sure that the female companion animals in your life never become one (a mother, that is). Female kittens can become pregnant as early as four months of age and (while the age at which dogs can become pregnant varies by breed) the average age for dogs is about five months. This can happen quickly and before you even realize that it’s possible, so it’s important to get your pet fixed as soon as your vet advises you to do so. The spay surgery involves the surgical removal of the ovaries as well as the uterus. This renders the animal from going into heat and reproducing. Even though it’s a more involved procedure than a neuter, your sweet girl will bounce back quickly. A spay costs anywhere from $55 and up for cats and $75 and up for dogs. Low-cost

LHN’s Fruge medals at state track & field meet By Michael Sudhalter

Chyna Fruge came through with the perfect conclusion to her high school athletic career. The Lutheran High North senior made her third trip to the TAPPS 4A State Track & Field Championship last Saturday at Baylor University in Chyna Fruge Waco. She earned her first state meet medal, finishing third place finish in the 200, Fruge in the 200-meter dash with a took sixth in the 100 meter time of 26.55 seconds. dash. (13.06). “It hasn’t really hit me that “It really did take a lot of I medaled for state,” Fruge heart and determination for said. “Track is the sport I love her to be able to medal,” the most.” LHN track and field coach Fruge, who also played Ryan Schultz said. “She really volleyball and soccer for the had to push herself. She had a Lady Lions, qualified for state tough hamstring injury she’d as a freshman and junior, been dealing with.” but she had always hoped to Fruge will graduate from medal. LHN later this month with “I rested the night before, school records in the 100 and my mom woke me up (12.43) and the 400 (1:03). really early,” Fruge said. “I “It feels great to know that got myself mentally pre- my name is going to be up on pared, because I was nervous the board and people are goand wanted to calm myself ing to see that,” Fruge said. “I hope it gives a push for other down.” In addition to her third girls here. SPX, STH will meet in state semifinals By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com
Jerry Murillo wasn’t expected to pitch for the St. Pius X baseball team. The Panthers senior spent last season behind the plate, catching 90 mile-per-hour fastballs from Kohl Stewart. Late in the season, Pius coach Adam Massiatte decided to make Murillo, who hadn’t pitched all season, the staff ace. It’s worked out for the Panthers, who finished third in their district but will compete for their second TAPPS 5A State Championship in the past three years this weekend in Waco. Standing in the way is a fa-
miliar foe – archival St. Thomas High, the two-time defending district champion, at 4 p.m. Friday at Waco ISD Field. The Eagles defeated the Panthers three times during the regular season (7-3, 3-2, 13-3), but that was the exact scenario when the teams met in last season’s state semifinal, which Pius won. Pius was able to earn the victory when it mattered, but lost to Liberty Christian, 6-2, in the 5A state title game. Last weekend, the Panthers defeated Liberty Christian, 103, to qualify for state, with Murillo on the mound. Murillo, who also earned the ‘W’ in a 9-1 first round playoff win over San Antonio Central Catholic, will start against St.
Thomas, likely against the Eagles’ Michael Rodgers, a Rice University signee. “We’re better than we were at the start of the year and middle of the year,” Massiatte said. “We’ve seen all of their guys. We can be prepared for what we’re going to face.” STH first-year head coach Ryan Lousteau said defeating the Panthers for a fourth time will be difficult. “Our team always seems to answer the call. I feel good about our chances,” Lousteau said. The Eagles repeated as state champions in 2010 and 2011. With Murillo making the move to the mound, Massiatte has moved junior Kohl Ullman from shortstop to catcher.
Senior utility Matt Palla is consistently playing shortstop and hitting .370. “It’s not about our opponents. we have to play Pius baseball now,” Massiatte said. While Pius has cruised to a pair of postseason wins, St. Thomas has been clutch, defeating Plano Prestonwood Christian and Austin St. Michael’s in the first two rounds. If Pius defeats Thomas on Friday, they’ll play for a state title at 4 p.m. Saturday at Waco ISD. against district rival, Tomball Concordia Lutheran, or Dallas Bishop Lynch. “We’re going to go with Johnny All-Staff on the mound on Saturday,” Massiatte said. “and use everybody in the pitching rotation.”

that they need to beat my record.” Fruge hopes to run track at Louisiana-Lafayette or Southeastern Louisiana next season. Williams takes seventh LHN senior Donald Williams had run track & field since his freshman year, but made his state debut in the high jump. It was his first year of competing in the event. Williams jumped 5-foot-8 – good enough for seventh place. “It was really cool to find out that I was good enough to make it to state,” Williams said. “It was a great experience. I thought Baylor was a beautiful campus, and it was awesome to see all of the people that qualified for the high jump.” Earlier in the season, Williams had jumped 5-foot-10 and came close to 6-feet on another try. “High jump involved a lot of form, and that was the hard part of it,” said Williams, who hopes to play college basketball.
